Pakistan Super League- Brief Introduction

PSL is a professional T20 cricket franchise league. The Pakistan Super League was founded in Lahore, Pakistan on 9th September 2023 with five teams and later become six teams.

The Pakistan Super League season runs between February and March. with each team playing 10 matches in the double round.

The top four teams with the best record qualify for the playoffs and culminate in the championship game, the PSL Cup Final. The Present PSL 2023 Champion is Quetta Gladiators . The current champions are Islamabad United, who won the title on 25 March 2023 in Karachi.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony took place in the United Arab Emirates with two playoff matches played in Lahore and the final at the National Stadium, Karachi.

The player draft for the 2023 season is held in Lahore on 12 November 2023. 501 players including both Pakistani and international players were divided into five different categories. Each franchise was allowed to pick a maximum of seven foreign players in their squads which could have a maximum of 21 members.

Every Pakistan Super League team played each other twice and the top four teams Islamabad United , Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi qualified for a series of playoff games while Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans failed to qualify for playoff stage in PSL 4.

PSL top 2 teams Islamabad United and Karachi Kings played the first qualifier in which Islamabad United beat Karachi Kings team by 8 wickets. The next two teams Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators played an eliminator in which Peshawar Zalmi beat Quetta Gladiators by 1 run.

The loser of the first qualifier Karachi Kings and the winner of the eliminator Peshawar Zalmi met in the second qualifier Match.

Peshawar Zalmi won by 13 runs.

The final took place on 27 March 2023 at National Stadium in Karachi . Pakistan. The tickets for the final were sold out within 3 hours. Peshawar Zalmi won the toss and elected to bat first and set a target of 149 for Quetta Gladiators. Quetta Gladiators chased the target in the 17th over with the loss of seven wickets.

Pakistan Super League 2023: Everything you need to know

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 is set to commence on February 13. Multan Sultans will host defending champions Lahore Qalandars in a rematch of the 2022 final in the tournament opener. Notably, the 2023 edition will be hosted across four venues, after being restricted to two in the last two seasons due to COVID-19. Here are the complete details.

Here are the key dates

As stated, the tournament beings on February 13. The final league match will take place between Qalandars and Karachi Kings on March 12. The top two teams will partake in the Qualifier on March 15. The third and fourth-placed sides will participate in Eliminator 1 on March 16, with Eliminator 2 scheduled on March 17. The finale takes place on March 19.

What about the venues?

The PSL 2023 matches will take place in Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, and Multan. As per ESPNcricinfo , a total of 11 matches will be played in Rawalpindi, with Karachi and Lahore hosting nine matches each. Meanwhile, Multan will host five matches. The knockouts will be held in Lahore.

Quetta, Peshawar won't host any matches 

The schedule has been designed such that four sides, namely Islamabad United , Qalandars, Sultans, and Kings get to play five games each at home. Quetta and Peshawar won't have any home fixtures since their venues aren't ready yet to host high-profile matches. However, they are expected to be match-ready by PSL 2024.

The PSL schedule was set up in December last year, before the current PCB chairman, Najam Sethi, replaced Ramiz Raja . There has been only one minor change by the new PCB management. Qalandars, who were set to play back-to-back matches on February 19-20, will play those matches on February 19 and 21. Meanwhile, Quetta Gladiators will lock horns with Peshawar Zalmi on February 20.

Qalandars beat Sultans by 42 runs to lift their maiden PSL title in the 2022 edition. Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan was adjudged Player of the Tournament. The Multan Sultans skipper hoarded 546 runs at 68.25 (50s: 7). Qalandars' Fakhar Zaman was the top scorer (588 runs at 45.23), while his teammate Shaheen Afridi bagged the most wickets (20 scalps at 19.70).

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 has been a real runs fest, characterized by high-scoring games and a flurry of boundaries and sixes throughout the competition. The aggregate run rate in this edition of PSL, 8.9 (178.58 runs per inning), is the highest rate in the history of PSL and the highest rate in T20 tournaments around the world over the last one year. Smaller boundary sizes and flatter pitches have provided batters with the opportunity to exploit the runs heist, known as PSL 8. Pakistan is traditionally known for producing pacers; however, many batters have emerged in this PSL, who have shown their capability to smash the ball out of the park. As the 8th edition of PSL is drawing to an end, let us recap all the important highlights, top performers, teams' performances and the talents that emerged.

Saim Ayub and Babar Azam

There is no award for guessing who the leading run-scorer of the tournament is, because Multan's captain, Mister Consistent, Muhammad Rizwan, is leading the batting charts as expected. National team captain, Babar Azam, who is leading Peshawar in this PSL, is the second-highest run-getter in the ongoing PSL with 416 runs. The surprise name in the highest run-getters is all-rounder Imad Wasim, who after being axed from the national team after the 2021 T20 World Cup, was eager to prove his worth in order to claim his spot back in the national team. The all-rounder is having a dream PSL and is one of the early contenders for the best player of the tournament award. He has amassed 404 runs at a strike rate of 170, besides taking 9 wickets in 10 matches.

Azam Khan, the young cricketing prodigy known for his explosive batting, has made a strong case for a national comeback. Shunned as "Parchi”, Sifarshi” and “Mota” in the initial years of his career, he was trolled for being overweight and for being Moin Khan’s son. Azam has made a resounding comeback and dumfounded his critics, as his exploits with the bat for Islamabad United have garnered praise from fans and pundits alike, and it is likely that we will see him back in national colors again. He hits the ball outside the fence with great ease, while his peddle-scoop shot against Quetta Gladiators on February 24 was mindboggling.

Multan and Lahore's bowlers have outperformed everyone in the batting-friendly conditions, as Multan's bowlers Abbas Afridi (22 wickets) and Ihsanullah (20 wickets) are leading the charts, followed by Lahore’s Rashid Khan (15 wickets), Shaheen Afridi (14 wickets) and Harris Rauf (14 wickets).

Two young uncapped players who have made constant headlines in this PSL are Peshawar Zalmi’s opener Saim Ayub, and Multan Sultan’s pacer Ihsanullah. The 20-year-old Saim has scored 309 runs at an impressive strike rate of 167 with 5 half centuries during this PSL. Saim could be the answer to Pakistan's search for a long-term explosive top-order player, who has shades of Saeed Anwar's stroke play in his game. The Karachi-born southpaw has delivered scintillating performances in Pakistan Cup and National T20 Cup in 2022 as well, and is just a step away from the national call-up, as was predicted in the preview by Youlin before the start of the tournament. Ihsanullah, a right-hand express fast bowler, who can constantly click 150 km/hour, is the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 20 scalps at an impressive average of 14.60 and economy of 7.36. It would not be a surprise to see Ihsanullah in national colors against Afghanistan later this month. Other emerging players who impressed in this year’s PSL include Multan Sultan’s Abbas Afridi and Usama Mir, Peshawar’s Haseebullah Khan, Lahore’s Abdullah Shafiq and Karachi’s Tayyab Tahir.

Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators have been eliminated from the tournament, winning only three games respectively out of ten games. Kings' journey was a tough one, as they lost many close games, and many of their players were not fully available, either due to national duties or injuries. Their first-choice openers, Sharjeel and Wade, could not click, neither did their platinum pick Haider Ali and experienced Shoaib Malik. Amir did well with the ball but was injured mid-way, which hampered the Kings' already depleted bowling lineup. Quetta had similar issues as well. Their foreign players couldn't deliver, as Guptill only performed in two games, both against Karachi Kings, and Jason Roy could only score one fifty-plus score. The local core of Sarfraz, Nawaz, Naseem and Iftikhar could not live up to expectations, causing the team to exit in the first round of PSL for the 4th consecutive year.

Lahore has lived up to the expectations of being the best bowling lineup in the tournament, and the deadly trio of Shaheen, Rashid and Rauf are amongst the top five wicket-takers of the event. All of them have nailed their respective roles; Shaheen at the start of the inning, Rashid in the middle overs and Rauf at the backend of the inning, have both contained runs and made important breakthroughs. David Weise, Sikandar Raza and Zaman Khan have complemented them very well. Fakhar and Abdullah Shafiq have once again taken the burden of Qalandars’ batting, with occasional brilliance from Sikandar, Sam Billings and Hussain Talat.

United has found new heroes in Rana Faheem Ashraf and Azam Khan, who have complemented the existing core of Clin Munro, Hasan Ali, Asif Ali and Shadab Khan. Faheem, the Ben Stokes of Pakistan, has so far chased down four targets for United this PSL, the most famous one against Multan Sultans by chasing 20 in the last over. It could be a career-changing tournament for Faheem if he continues to perform consistently. Munro and Azam have perfected their roles, while Hasan Ali and Tom Curran were effective with the ball. United could not, however, utilize their emerging players properly, the likes of Zeeshan Zameer, Mubasir Khan and Hasan Nawaz.

Zalmi played an attacking brand of cricket under Babar, with the likes of Harris, Saim, Tom Cohler Cadmore and Rowmen Powell constituting the core. Their bowling, however, was the weaker aspect, as it couldn’t defend 240 plus target twice in the tournament. Sultans were considered the best batting lineup, and they showed why there was so much hype around their batting. However, it was their bowling that surprised all, as the inexperienced trio of Ihsanullah, Abbas Afridi and Usama Mir bowled brilliantly, containing the oppositions to small totals throughout the tournament.

Lahore and Multan will face each other in the qualifier; while Peshawar will play against Islamabad in the eliminator 1. The losing side of the qualifier will face the winner of the eliminator 1 for a spot in the final against the winner of the qualifier. The final is scheduled for the 19th of March at the Qaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

70 Years of Pakistan Series

A message from ambassador nong rong on the occasion of the chinese new year.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. PSL 2023 to kick off with Multan Sultans vs Lahore Qalandars in repeat of last season's final

Rawalpindi will host the most number of games in PSL 2023, which gets underway on February 13 in Multan with a contest between Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars, the defending champions .

A total of 11 matches will be played in Rawalpindi, while Karachi (nine), Lahore (nine) and Multan (five) will host the remaining games. The final, on March 19, as well as the playoffs prior to it, will all be played in Lahore.

Three women's "festival games" have also been slotted midway into the PSL - in Rawalpindi on March 8, 10 and 11 - involving local and overseas players in what will be a case of the PCB testing the waters ahead of a full-fledged women's T20 league in the future. These will all be day games and be part of double-headers, with men's PSL games to follow in the evening. The PCB earlier had plans to have the inaugural women's league run concurrently to the men's PSL, but that was shelved. As things stand, the aim is to launch a standalone project in later this year. The new league - which will bear a different name - shall have four teams.

This season marks a return to four venues for the league after it was restricted to two centres in the past two seasons because of Covid-19. Najam Sethi, head of the PCB's new management committee, had earlier said that Quetta would be included in the list of venues for the first time, but the city has been omitted from the fixtures' list released on Friday. Sethi, addressing a press meet, said "logistical concerns" had led to a change of plans for the PCB.

It would have been the first time as a PSL venue for Quetta - the capital of Balochistan, Pakistan's least populous province but its largest by area - after the city staged its only ODI back in 1996, a three-wicket Pakistan win over Zimbabwe .

Quetta has hosted domestic cricket since 1954 but has often been neglected because of a lack of infrastructure and the security situation over the years. Cricket has not been as popular in Balochistan compared to other regions of Pakistan, historically, and only one player from the province, Shoaib Khan , has represented Pakistan. He played four T20Is during a quadrangular in Canada in 2008.

"The PSL will be a massive event for the PCB, taking place at the four iconic venues with the world's best T20 cricketers in action," Sethi said. "We aim to make the league bigger, better and stronger than ever before with the overarching ambition to make it the first-choice event for leading T20 cricketers. Each of the six sides will enter the PSL 8 with lots at stake."

The PSL schedule was put in place in December, before Sethi replaced Ramiz Raja at the helm of the PCB, and the new PCB management hasn't made any major change to it. There was a suggestion that the opening ceremony be moved out of Multan and be held in Karachi, but that hasn't happened. The only tweak is that Qalandars, who had back-to-back games on February 19 and 20, will now play the games on February 19 and 21, with the original February 21 game between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi now taking place on February 20.

The schedule has been designed to allow four sides (Qalandars, Sultans, Karachi Kings and Islamabad United) to play five matches each in front of their supporters, one against each of the other teams. Quetta and Peshawar won't have any home games since their home venues are not ready to host high profile games, but the plan is to get them ready by PSL 2024.
