Whether you’re thinking about pursuing an advanced degree in education or are already in such a program, one thing you will need to be prepared for is writing a thesis or dissertation. In most graduate-level education programs, a thesis or dissertation is the culmination of years of challenging work, serving as your own independent research that marks the final step before earning your graduate degree.
If writing a dissertation or thesis sounds like a daunting task, it does not have to be. With a little preparation and some best practices in mind, you can approach writing a thesis or dissertation with confidence.
Before writing a thesis or dissertation, it’s important to understand their general scope and purpose, along with some key differences between a thesis and a dissertation. After all, while there are some similarities between the two, a dissertation and a thesis are not the same thing.
The primary purpose of a thesis or dissertation in an education graduate program is for students to demonstrate what they have learned in their respective programs while applying their own research, theory, analysis and synthesis. Ultimately, the author of a thesis or dissertation should successfully contribute something new to the existing topic. In dissertations specifically, students may also be required to articulate, discuss and defend their research orally in front of professors or other faculty members. This oral defense is not required for a master’s thesis.
When it comes to writing a thesis or a dissertation, the terms “dissertation” and “thesis” are sometimes used interchangeably. That said, it is crucial to understand that these are two different things. Generally, a dissertation is primarily focused on filling a gap in existing literature or extending upon current research regarding a specific topic. The goal is to analyze literature to the point of saturation and determine where there is a need for further research. In a dissertation, a doctoral student will then explain where the problem exists given current research and develop a research study to explore or evaluate the problem, thus filling the gap and contributing meaningfully to the field.
On the other hand, a thesis is more of a presentation of information that’s already out there with no obligation to conduct additional research.
One of the most important aspects of drafting a great thesis or dissertation begins with choosing the right topic. Here, it is paramount to select a topic that not only interests you but is relevant to your future professional goals and aspirations. After all, there’s a good chance you may use your thesis or dissertation as a basis for future work or further research.
In selecting a topic, you will also want to consider current research trends in your field. What is trending in the realm of education and what could you contribute to existing research? There are research gaps or questions that remain unanswered about certain educational topics that could be addressed through your research.
In most graduate programs, you will need to write and present a research proposal before you can really get started on your thesis or dissertation. Most research proposals are reviewed and approved by a professor or other faculty.
A literature review is to discover the research available on your research topic. This review should detail each source you plan to use in your own research with plenty of detail. More specifically, a literature review is a comprehensive summary of the current literature on a given topic that demonstrates the need for additional research to be conducted. Literature reviews comprise a major portion of a proposal, including a summary of each source as it relates to the need for additional research.
Quality is vital when it comes to selecting literature for your research or literature review. Ideally, your literature review should include plenty of recent and reputable sources that come from academic journals, books, articles and even other dissertations.
Once you have a better understanding for what is already out there, you can craft a research proposal that discusses your specific research topic, the current problem, the purpose behind your research, the methodology you plan to use and the relevant literature that further defends a need for your topic to be investigated.
An important part of your research proposal will be your methodology selection, which will explain exactly how you plan to go about your research. For example, will your research be qualitative, quantitative or a mix of both and why? How will the methodology you choose answer your research questions?
After your research proposal is approved, you will have the green light to begin working on your thesis or dissertation. You will receive feedback or thesis guidance from the faculty member who reviewed your proposal. It is important to reflect on the feedback and make revisions as needed.
One of the most helpful things you can do as you get started with your dissertation or thesis is to create an outline. This allows you to develop the most critical aspects of your final project that include your thesis, your main points and other key details to ensure that they flow logically.

In creating an outline, include designated sections for each of your main points with specific research, statistics, or other data to support it. This will ensure that your arguments are made clearly and that your thought process is clear.
Even if writing is not necessarily your strong suit, you will need to be able to put together a cohesive document for your thesis or dissertation. There are some basic strategies worth keeping in mind to help you get started.
First, it can be helpful to write your introduction and conclusion paragraphs last once you have completed all your research. Imagine the thesis statement to be the North Star of your paper. It is the one- or two-sentence declaration boldly announcing your main point or argument. It isn't a summary, but rather a mission statement of sorts for your paper to guide your reader through the twists and turns of your research or analysis.
An excellent thesis statement truly ought to have these elements:
The main idea or argument: This is what will propel the paper forward. It is, in effect, its heart. What are you attempting to prove, explain, or explore? Do not bury the lead—state it up front.

A title page is required for all APA Style papers. There are both student and professional versions of the title page. As a student in IPiB, you are required to complete coursework, laboratory rotations, a preliminary exam, one semester of teaching as well as a second semester of teaching or approved professional development activities, and a thesis defense. Read on to learn more about each of these program elements and to see a sample schedule. The Program Handbook is also a fantastic, in-depth guide to keep you on track toward your Ph.D.

Although many students arrive with an idea of which laboratories they are interested in joining, all IPiB students must complete three laboratory rotations in their first semester before being matched with a laboratory in which they complete their Ph.D. research. Each rotation must be with a different faculty member in the program and lasts approximately 4-5 weeks. Lab rotations are monitored by the New Student Orientation Committee. This committee is also available for advice until you join a research lab.
After rotations are completed, students rank their choices and the New Student Orientation Committee assigns each student to a lab they rotated in, making every effort to place students in their first or second choice lab. Final lab assignments consider both your preference and professors’ preferences. The majority of students start their thesis research during their second semester in the program in their first-choice lab.
All IPiB students must meet curriculum requirements to graduate with a Ph.D. in biochemistry. Required coursework and optional selections are determined by the Examination and Certification Committee and the New Student Orientation Committee. A full list of courses offered and course descriptions can be found on our Courses page . Required coursework for all IPiB students includes:
In addition to the courses listed above, students must complete a minimum of two additional approved graduate level (600 level or above, or that carry the graduate attribute) didactic or laboratory courses to fulfill their breadth requirements. Each course must be a minimum of two credits. A minimum of six total credits is required. Courses much be chosen from at least two of the following categories: physical sciences, biological sciences, quantitative sciences. All coursework must be completed before a student is able to defend their thesis.
Before starting their second year in the program, students form their faculty thesis committee in consultation with their advisors. Committees determine a student’s curriculum, offer advice and guidance, and meet annually to follow students’ progress.
All IPiB students are required to teach for one semester in their second year, and they have the option to either teach for a second semester in their third year or fulfill an equivalent (approximately 60 hours) approved professional development plan. The one-semester teaching requirement and professional development option allow students to gain valuable teaching experience and to receive recognition for their professional development in ways that align with their professional interests. Students must pass a preliminary exam to obtain dissertator status. The preliminary exam is usually completed during the spring semester of a student’s second year in the program. The student prepares a written research proposal based on their thesis project and modeled after an NIH grant application, and defends the proposal orally in front of their thesis committee.
Successful completion of a student’s research program culminates in the written and oral presentation of their work in a public seminar, followed by a closed meeting with their thesis committee. Students generally reach this stage in 5-6 years.
IPiB does not require a minor; instead, we have a breadth requirement that constitutes at least six credits in at least two of three breadth areas (physical, biological, and quantitative sciences). Students who wish to pursue a minor must meet the minor requirements of the home department or program and may be exempt from the breadth requirement with approval of the Education & Career Development Committee. Michelle Maillet (Academic Associate), Lauren Kay (Clerical), Chantal Marotte (Management), and Moshe Dalva (Technical) have been named recipients of the Faculty of Science Excellence Awards.
These awards, announced at the Faculty of Science Council meeting on May 21st, recognize the outstanding contributions made by members of the Faculty’s administrative and support staff during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Michelle Maillet, Department of Geography, Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Academic Associates
As Undergraduate Advisor, Michelle Maillet has been responsible since 2014 for guiding students through their programs in the Department of Geography. Her job expanded in 2019 when she became full-time advisor for the Interfaculty program in Sustainability Science and Society. As a steadfast supporter of students’ interests, Michelle consistently goes the extra mile to provide students with outstanding support. One of many examples of this is her organization of extra mid-semester activities centered around arts and crafts that enable students to connect, socialize, and let off steam. She has a university-wide reputation as an exceptionally caring undergraduate advisor, to the point where many students name their interactions with her as their favourite part of being a Geography student. For all these reasons and many more, I am very happy to present the Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Academic Associates to Michelle Maillet.
Lauren Kay, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Clerical Staff
Since 2010, Lauren Kay has served the Department of Physics with great distinction as the Graduate Program Coordinator. This is a huge responsibility, as Physics has about 200 graduate students, many of whom are international, with around 80 new entrants to be selected and around 80 who complete their programs each year. Lauren has made exceptional efforts to ensure that students progress through their thesis work smoothly, from streamlining procedures for paying them to constituting their thesis committees and coordinating their final defenses. She handles changing or exceptional circumstances, such as students having sudden visa problems, with considerable skill and good grace. For all these reasons and many more, I am very happy to present the Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Clerical staff to Lauren Kay.
Chantal Marotte, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Management Staff
Chantal Marotte has been with the Department of Chemistry for 38 years and has been managing the graduate program in Chemistry since 2003. She handles a range of activities, including filling TA positions, assessing graduate applications, and, perhaps most importantly, ensuring the well-being of graduate students with exceptional dedication and skill. At one point, she intervened extensively to find financial support for a student who experienced substantial loss because of a fire in their residence building. How much Chantal has touched the hearts of Chemistry students was made evident by a compilation of video testimonials that students and alumni made in 2021 to thank her for her efforts. For all these reasons and many more, I am very happy to present the Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Management staff to Chantal Marotte.
Moshe (Mike) Dalva, Department of Geography, Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Technical Staff
Moshe (Mike) Dalva has been a Research Technician in the Department of Geography since 2004 and is also an MSc graduate from the same department. He couples exceptional understanding of the theory behind the intricate, complex, and sometimes old, pieces of equipment in Burnside Hall with remarkable technical skill in operating and fixing them. In one instance where an equipment failure appeared to be terminal, Mike was able to diagnose and begin fixing the problem within an hour, potentially saving the student who relied on this equipment many months of delay.
