  • It is focused on one main idea or concept; and the rest of the paper or project points back to that idea or concept.
  • The author generally takes a stance on an issue.
  • Because the author takes a stance, a thesis is usually arguable and the project must leave room to address data that challenges an idea and alternative opinions.
  • A thesis is supported with evidence and data.
  • A thesis statement is broad enough to carry a project, but not so narrow that it cannot be researched or discussed in detail.

How To Develop a Thesis Statement

There is no easy formula for developing a thesis statement. No one comes up with a good thesis without extensive reading and research, not even experienced researchers. Drafting a thesis is a multi-stage process. Most research first takes the form of a broad topic or question that evolves into a well-defined thesis statement as research progresses. Here are some examples of topic ideas and thesis statements:

Reality television The writers' strike of 2008 directly increased the rise in popularity of reality television.
Depression and teenagers Overuse of social media contributes significantly to depression among teenagers in the United States.

It is helpful to start the process of creating a thesis statement by choosing a topic that is interesting; without investment in the question, the research process tends to be tedious and more difficult. Conducting background research on a topic to better inform yourself about your topic will help you to learn more about it, find out what research has already been conducted, and develop questions that have not yet been adequately answered. Those questions can form the basis of a thesis. You will start to find initial ideas for research topics, and eventually a thesis statement, by simply analyzing the results of a broad search.

For example, a search on depression and social media and teenagers yields studies that have to do with:

  • treatment of social media addiction
  • sleep disorders
  • racial discrimination
  • dating 
  • ...and more

Any of these subtopics may serve to develop and sustain a research question about social media use among teenagers.

Basics of Methodology

Research is a process of inquiry that is carried out in a pondered, organized, and strategic manner. In order to obtain high quality results, it is important to understand methodology.

Research methodology refers to how your project will be designed, what you will observe or measure, and how you will collect and analyze data. The methods you choose must be appropriate for your field and for the specific research questions you are setting out to answer.

A strong understanding of methodology will help you:

Research Project Methodology

It differs by school. Technically, a thesis is a claim that can be proven or disproven, but, in practice, the term "thesis" is often used for a project (for undergraduate or Master's degrees). On the other hand, a PhD thesis is not just a project; it should advance the state of knowledge in a field in a way that can only be done by someone knowledgeable in the field.

My department is considering renaming our Master's thesis requirement to Master's project, to acknowledge that it need not be a research contribution.

Of course, even a project can entail publishable work or advance the state of the art, but it need not.

What's the difference between a research topic and research problem?

A research topic and a research problem are two distinct concepts that are often confused. A research topic is a broader label that indicates the focus of the study , while a research problem is an issue or gap in knowledge within the broader field that needs to be addressed.

To illustrate this distinction, consider a student who has chosen “teenage pregnancy in the United Kingdom” as their research topic. This research topic could encompass any number of issues related to teenage pregnancy such as causes, prevention strategies, health outcomes for mothers and babies, etc.

Within this broad category (the research topic) lies potential areas of inquiry that can be explored further – these become the research problems . For example:

  • What factors contribute to higher rates of teenage pregnancy in certain communities?
  • How do different types of parenting styles affect teen pregnancy rates?
  • What interventions have been successful in reducing teenage pregnancies?

Simply put, a key difference between a research topic and a research problem is scope ; the research topic provides an umbrella under which multiple questions can be asked, while the research problem focuses on one specific question or set of questions within that larger context.

Identifying Relevant Sources

When evaluating potential research topics, it is important to consider the factors that make for a strong topic (we discussed these earlier). Specifically:

  • Originality
  • Feasibility

So, when you have a list of potential topics or ideas, assess each of them in terms of these three criteria. A good topic should take a unique angle, provide value (either to academia or practitioners), and be practical enough for you to pull off, given your limited resources.

Finally, you should also assess whether this project could lead to potential career opportunities such as internships or job offers down the line. Make sure that you are researching something that is relevant enough so that it can benefit your professional development in some way. Additionally, consider how each research topic aligns with your career goals and interests; researching something that you are passionate about can help keep motivation high throughout the process.

How can I assess the feasibility of a research topic?

When evaluating the feasibility and practicality of a research topic, it is important to consider several factors.

First, you should assess whether or not the research topic is within your area of competence. Of course, when you start out, you are not expected to be the world’s leading expert, but do should at least have some foundational knowledge.

Time commitment

When considering a research topic, you should think about how much time will be required for completion. Depending on your field of study, some topics may require more time than others due to their complexity or scope.

Additionally, if you plan on collaborating with other researchers or institutions in order to complete your project, additional considerations must be taken into account such as coordinating schedules and ensuring that all parties involved have adequate resources available.

Resources needed

It’s also critically important to consider what type of resources are necessary in order to conduct the research successfully. This includes physical materials such as lab equipment and chemicals but can also include intangible items like access to certain databases or software programs which may be necessary depending on the nature of your work. Additionally, if there are costs associated with obtaining these materials then this must also be factored into your evaluation process.

Potential risks

It’s important to consider the inherent potential risks for each potential research topic. These can include ethical risks (challenges getting ethical approval), data risks (not being able to access the data you’ll need), technical risks relating to the equipment you’ll use and funding risks (not securing the necessary financial back to undertake the research).

UW graduate student Pallavi Pokharel interviews Robert Lundy for her thesis.

Understanding how Wyomingites think about and relate to water is the topic of Pallavi Pokharel’s master’s thesis. For this, she interviewed 43 farmers/ranchers and recreationists in the Snake River and Green River basins. Her research is one component of UW’s WyACT: Wyoming Anticipating Climate Transitions project, a five-year program funded by the National Science Foundation, and she is one of the first graduates to come out of the project.

Meet EPA Researcher Amalia Handler, Ph.D.

EPA researcher Amalia Handler works on modeling nutrients and harmful algal blooms in waterbodies across the lower 48 states of the US. Currently her main project is modeling the spatial drivers of harmful algal blooms in lakes that are caused by cyanobacteria across the lower 48 states. The project is investigating the landscape, climate, and lake characteristics that are associated with blooms by leveraging multiple EPA datasets including the National Lakes Assessment , the National Nutrient Inventory , and LakeCat . The aim is to estimate cyanobacteria and risk of a common cyanobacterial toxin, microcystin, in as many lakes as possible across the US. It’s a follow-up on previous research on the estimation of the risk of microcystin among satellite-monitored lakes .

Tell us about your background.

I have a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Franklin & Marshall College. I earned my Ph.D. at Arizona State University in the lab of Nancy Grimm, Ph.D. I studied nitrogen cycling in streams and wetlands using a combination of biogeochemical and ecosystem ecology approaches that included field and lab experiments as well as network and statistical modeling.

When did you first know you wanted to work in environmental science? 

I had a mentor early in my career that shared with me the remarkable microscopic world of soils—a dynamic mixture of microbes, plants, fungi, minerals, detritus, and so much more. He would say, “The biggest things in this world are done by the smallest organisms.” That feeling of being in awe of these organisms stuck with me. It continues to inspire my work on how small organisms can control big things, like nitrogen cycling, water quality, even the climate.

What do you like most about your job? 

Two things, really. First, I get to work with an amazing group of researchers who are eager to collaborate and provide great insights. Second, almost every person has had some personal experience with harmful algal blooms, so it’s very meaningful work.

How does your science matter? 

Unfortunately, harmful algal blooms are widespread, but getting data on the enormous number of waterbodies across the country is really challenging. The research I do leverages the data where we have it and estimates the risk of blooms at unmeasured lakes. This estimation helps identify the number and location of lakes that may need further bloom monitoring.

If you weren’t a scientist, what would you be doing? 

I think I would be a professional facilitator. I really enjoy bringing people together for discussions and leading project teams. I learn a tremendous amount from others in these settings. 

What advice would you give a student interested in a career in science?

Try out many different fields of science. I have had experiences in everything from conducting conservation activities in state parks, to public health as it related to lead exposure in children, to researching the extent to which foxes rely on human food . There are so many fields of science and ways to be a scientist!

What do you think the coolest scientific discovery was and why? 

The endosymbiotic theory. This is the concept that eukaryotic cells (those in plants and animals) developed from larger cells by engulfing smaller, free-living cyanobacteria. The cyanobacteria eventually continued to function inside the larger cell and, voilà, there are now cells with organelles like mitochondria and chloroplasts! I think it’s so neat that the cells that make up the human body are the product of a cooperative evolutionary process.

If you could have dinner with any scientist, past or present, who would you choose and what would you talk about? 

I am a huge fan of the writings of Oliver Sacks, and it would be a pleasure to have dinner with him. Sacks was a physician and wrote fascinating and deeply caring accounts of patients he saw with neurological disorders. His books made me think about science as a field that inspires both awe and compassion.

These brief, peer-reviewed articles complement full research papers and are an easy way to receive proper credit and recognition for the work you have done. Research elements are research outputs that have come about as a result of following the research cycle – this includes things like data, methods and protocols, software, hardware and more.

Summer 2024 Student Research Fellowship Projects

iGEM students

SUNY Oneonta students are getting firsthand experience in their fields of study this summer through research and creative projects on topics ranging from endangered turtles to an abroad Shakespeare-intensive.

Thirty-six SUNY Oneonta students are involved in research and creative projects on and off campus through the university’s Summer Research Fellowship Program. Fellowship grants assist undergraduate and graduate students with costs related to participating in summer research and creative activity in either an independent or group project.

SUNY Oneonta faculty are mentoring students in projects ranging from investigating heat disparities in smaller urban zones to a Shakespeare-intensive study in Prague in the Czech Republic. Some of the research projects are continuations of projects from previous summers, such as the “Synthesis Completion of Melicopteline Derivatives,” “Characterization of Seiche in Regional Lakes” and “Detecting Exoplanets and Obtaining Stellar Spectra from the SUNY Oneonta Observatory.” Other summer research projects like “Implementing an Emotion Management in Sport Program: Training Staff for Summer Camp” and “(Re)Telling Stories of Change with Artificial Intelligence” are the first of their kind.

The 2024 Summer Research Fellowship recipients receive financial support from University Advancement’s Student Research and Creative Activity Grant Fund , with additional funding from Alumni Engagement. Students receive grants of up to $3,000 each, with a maximum of $6,000 for two or more students working together on a single project. Students who must remain on campus for their research stay at SUNY Oneonta for free this summer. The students will share their projects with the campus community during the Summer Research Fellowship Showcase from Sept. 23 to 26.

“The summer fellowships provide students with a great opportunity to do concentrated, in-depth, faculty-led research and creative projects without sacrificing their ability to earn money at a time when so many students are home working summer jobs,” said Audrey Porsche, associate director of scholarly activities.

Team Oneonta Prepares for iGEM This Fall

In a partnership with students and faculty from Hartwick College, SUNY Oneonta’s iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) team is preparing for the annual iGEM Jamboree this fall in Paris, France. This year, the team is focused on improving the sustainability of wastewater reprocessing by developing biological tools that can adjust pH and remove undesirable or hazardous contaminants. Team Oneonta’s project was inspired by the recent surge of investment in advanced manufacturing in New York following the CHIPS and Science Act.

“I love their motivation and enthusiasm,” said Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Kelly Gallagher. “They’re getting excited about what they’re learning and they feel like they’re doing something real – and that’s energizing for me. It helps students see scientific work in the context of how it happens in the real world, and if science is going to do good for people or produce a product not just for use in the lab.”

The team is split into two groups, with one group focused on the scientific development of the technology under Gallagher, SUNY Oneonta faculty Jill Fielhaber and Bill Vining, and three Hartwick faculty members. The other group of students is considering the ethical and compliance issues in modern biomedical science with Adjunct Faculty Daniel Patrone from the Philosophy Department, reviewing Gallagher’s group’s compiled data and research.

“My favorite part of working on this research so far has been the abundance of collaboration among such a variety of demographics,” said Early Childhood Education rising senior Taylor Schroeder at SUNY Oneonta and member of Patrone’s group. “I have been able to speak with CFOs, scientists and researchers, community members and best of all, the diverse mindset and career paths of our very own SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick students.”

Habitat Selection of Wood Turtles in the Oneonta Area

At a stream in the Oneonta area, Associate Professor of Biology Elizabeth Bastiaans and her students, Madison Stanley and Victoria Prouty, are collecting and analyzing data to help conserve the local population of wood turtles. Their research aims to answer the question: “In an area highly impacted by invasive species and anthropogenic activity, what types of habitat characteristics do wood turtles preferentially select?” The variables Stanley and Prouty are recording include water temperature, stream clarity, weather, sunlight, foliage type, available food sources and whether the turtle was found on land or in water.

“Both students are collecting data that will help us conserve our local population of wood turtles, an endangered species that lives in rivers and forests across northeastern North America,” said Bastiaans. “Wood turtles are usually considered sensitive to human impacts, but we have a surprisingly high number of them in our area, and we want to better understand what habitats and potential prey species to conserve or restore so we can keep this population around.”

This summer, Stanley, a Biology major who received a Summer Research Fellowship grant, is studying how wood turtles adapt in their natural habitat with high levels of human impact. Prouty, a Biology graduate student at SUNY Oneonta, is collecting tissue samples from local turtles and is using a technique called stable isotope analysis to reconstruct their diets. “She’s comparing samples from modern turtles to samples from turtles in our vertebrate museum collection, collected about 60 years ago before the species was endangered,” said Bastiaans.

Water Sampling for Trace Elements and Stable Isotopes in Otsego County

Throughout Otsego County, Assistant Professor of Geography and Environmental Sustainability Jacob Warner and rising senior Cassidy Celic are collecting water samples as part of a larger research collaboration project with the University of Arizona, Louisiana State University and other institutions. The larger project has researchers studying an aquatic snail species known as the marsh rams-horn and developing a paleoclimate archive to reconstruct the hydroclimate of understudied regions in North America.

“We’re collecting samples from water bodies all over Otsego County for chemical analysis,” said Warner. “We will have these samples analyzed for stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen, and hopefully also various elemental concentrations of strontium, barium, magnesium, calcium and others. These analytical parameters will tell us about the underlying bedrock’s weathering, pollution, local water cycle and local hydroclimate.”

Along with water samples, Warner and Celic are recording what they see in other plant and animal life, climate and other aspects of the environment. Combined with collecting previously published data for comparison, their goal is to create an environmental map of Otsego County primarily focusing on water chemistry. “This type of map is useful for geologists, archaeologists, climatologists, biologists, forensic scientists and anyone interested in the chemistry of surface waters,” said Warner.

“For this project, I had to find and map out various open access bodies of water, like creeks, ponds, lakes, all across Otsego County, collect samples of water and weather data, and transcribe previously published data from the county,” said Celic. “My favorite part of working on this research is getting to explore more of Otsego County that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. I’m able to explore and create some core memories while doing something I love!” After graduating, Celic plans to work in New York state, in either the forestry or conservation and research fields.

China-U.S. Science Collaborations Are Declining, Slowing Key Research

The U.S. and China are collaborating less on projects across scientific disciplines amid a culture of fear in both countries

China’s scientific collaboration with other countries has declined since the pandemic, driven by falling partnerships with the United States, an analysis shows.

Scientists have been warning that political tensions between China and the United States, combined with the pandemic, have affected research collaborations between the two countries. But it takes time for evidence of this sort of decline to accumulate in research databases.

The latest evidence comes from an analysis conducted by Springer Nature’s team in China. ( Nature ’s news team is editorially independent of its publisher, Springer Nature.) The authors used InCites, a tool owned by publishing-analytics firm Clarivate, based in London, to analyse internationally co-authored articles that were published between 2013 and 2023. InCites draws on papers indexed in the science-citation database Web of Science.

They found that in 2022, the total number papers co-authored by researchers from China and their international peers declined for the first time since 2013 (See 'Research Powerhouse').

The proportion of research papers with Chinese and international co-authors has been falling for even longer. At its peak, in 2018, 26.6% — roughly 110,000 articles — of China’s output in the InCites database was co-authored with international colleagues. By 2023, the proportion of the country’s articles with international peers had dropped by 7.2%, despite China’s overall number of articles almost doubling to 759,000 over the same period.

The drop in internationally co-authored papers is mainly due to China’s declining share of papers published with US researchers, which fell by 6.4% between its peak in 2017 and 2023 — the largest decline of any country included in the analysis. The findings were presented at the Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing on 25 April.

The decline in US-China collaborations echoes findings from a 2022 analysis conducted for Nature , which found that the number of researchers with dual US and China affiliations on research articles in Elsevier’s Scopus database had fallen by more than 20% between 2019 and 2021.

Although the latest analysis shows that the share of US–China articles has been slowly declining over the past six years, the pandemic exacerbated the downward trend, says Marina Zhang, an innovation researcher who focuses on China at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia.

Political tensions

Zhang says that ongoing geopolitical tensions between the United States and China have also fuelled the decline. “This is especially worrying for researchers,” says Zhang. The US Department of Justice’s controversial China Initiative — which was launched in 2018 to tackle espionage in research and industry — ended in 2022. The crackdown resulted in several scientists being arrested over their ties to collaborators or institutions in China, and has stoked fear among researchers of Chinese descent. Since then, the US government has adopted a range of policies focused on tightening research security . And in July 2023, the Chinese government implemented its revised counter-espionage law, which broadened the definition of what constitutes spying.

The crackdown on perceived foreign interference in both the United States and China is making researchers more cautious about collaborating, says Zhang. Restrictive policies and the climate of fear could end up driving talent away from certain countries and fields, leading to a “brain drain and a loss of valuable human capital”, she says.

This “chilling effect” on US–China collaborations is already hindering influential research, says Tang Li, a researcher who specializes in science and innovation policy at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. For instance, a 2024 study examined the effect that the foreign-interference investigations at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) had on researchers and found that those in the United States with collaborators in China were less productive during this period than were their colleagues with scientific partners in other countries.

Zhang says that the faltering collaborative ties between the United States and China could also result in the countries pursuing the same types of research separately, instead of joining forces to tackle global problems such as climate change , pandemics and food security.

Turning inwards

More worryingly, the countries might increasingly prioritize domestic interests over international cooperation, which could make scientific research a more nationalistic endeavour, says Zhang.

China’s collaborations with other countries have also tapered off since 2020, but not as markedly as those with the United States. Tang says that reviving US–China collaborations is crucial because such scientific partnerships could help to bridge the gap between the two countries. “Given the increasing global disasters and uncertainties, humanity cannot afford to waste time on nationalistic rivalries,” she says.

Structure of a research proposal

A research proposal describes what you will investigate, why it’s important, and how you will conduct your research.

The format of a research proposal varies between fields, but most proposals will contain at least these elements:

While the sections may vary, the overall objective is always the same. A research proposal serves as a blueprint and guide for your research plan, helping you get organized and feel confident in the path forward you choose to take.

Academics often have to write research proposals to get funding for their projects. As a student, you might have to write a research proposal as part of a grad school application , or prior to starting your thesis or dissertation .

In addition to helping you figure out what your research can look like, a proposal can also serve to demonstrate why your project is worth pursuing to a funder, educational institution, or supervisor.

Research proposal length

The length of a research proposal can vary quite a bit. A bachelor’s or master’s thesis proposal can be just a few pages, while proposals for PhD dissertations or research funding are usually much longer and more detailed. Your supervisor can help you determine the best length for your work.

One trick to get started is to think of your proposal’s structure as a shorter version of your thesis or dissertation , only without the results , conclusion and discussion sections.

Writing a research proposal can be quite challenging, but a good starting point could be to look at some examples. We’ve included a few for you below.

Like your dissertation or thesis, the proposal will usually have a title page that includes:

  • The proposed title of your project
  • Your supervisor’s name
  • Your institution and department

The first part of your proposal is the initial pitch for your project. Make sure it succinctly explains what you want to do and why.

Your introduction should:

  • Introduce your topic
  • Give necessary background and context
  • Outline your  problem statement  and research questions

To guide your introduction , include information about:

  • Who could have an interest in the topic (e.g., scientists, policymakers)
  • How much is already known about the topic
  • What is missing from this current knowledge
  • What new insights your research will contribute
  • Why you believe this research is worth doing

As you get started, it’s important to demonstrate that you’re familiar with the most important research on your topic. A strong literature review  shows your reader that your project has a solid foundation in existing knowledge or theory. It also shows that you’re not simply repeating what other people have already done or said, but rather using existing research as a jumping-off point for your own.

In this section, share exactly how your project will contribute to ongoing conversations in the field by:

  • Comparing and contrasting the main theories, methods, and debates
  • Examining the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • Explaining how will you build on, challenge, or synthesize prior scholarship

Following the literature review, restate your main  objectives . This brings the focus back to your own project. Next, your research design or methodology section will describe your overall approach, and the practical steps you will take to answer your research questions.

To finish your proposal on a strong note, explore the potential implications of your research for your field. Emphasize again what you aim to contribute and why it matters.

For example, your results might have implications for:

  • Improving best practices
  • Informing policymaking decisions
  • Strengthening a theory or model
  • Challenging popular or scientific beliefs
  • Creating a basis for future research

If you are applying for research funding, chances are you will have to include a detailed budget. This shows your estimates of how much each part of your project will cost.

Make sure to check what type of costs the funding body will agree to cover. For each item, include:

  • Cost : exactly how much money do you need?
  • Justification : why is this cost necessary to complete the research?
  • Source : how did you calculate the amount?

To determine your budget, think about:

  • Travel costs : do you need to go somewhere to collect your data? How will you get there, and how much time will you need? What will you do there (e.g., interviews, archival research)?
  • Materials : do you need access to any tools or technologies?
  • Help : do you need to hire any research assistants for the project? What will they do, and how much will you pay them?

Keep your research objectives clear and concise, and use appropriate verbs to accurately convey the work that you will carry out for each one.

A research aim is a broad statement indicating the general purpose of your research project. It should appear in your introduction at the end of your problem statement , before your research objectives.

Research objectives are more specific than your research aim. They indicate the specific ways you’ll address the overarching aim.

A PhD, which is short for philosophiae doctor (doctor of philosophy in Latin), is the highest university degree that can be obtained. In a PhD, students spend 3–5 years writing a dissertation , which aims to make a significant, original contribution to current knowledge.

A PhD is intended to prepare students for a career as a researcher, whether that be in academia, the public sector, or the private sector.

A master’s is a 1- or 2-year graduate degree that can prepare you for a variety of careers.

All master’s involve graduate-level coursework. Some are research-intensive and intend to prepare students for further study in a PhD; these usually require their students to write a master’s thesis . Others focus on professional training for a specific career.

Critical thinking refers to the ability to evaluate information and to be aware of biases or assumptions, including your own.

Like information literacy , it involves evaluating arguments, identifying and solving problems in an objective and systematic way, and clearly communicating your ideas.

The best way to remember the difference between a research plan and a research proposal is that they have fundamentally different audiences. A research plan helps you, the researcher, organize your thoughts. On the other hand, a dissertation proposal or research proposal aims to convince others (e.g., a supervisor, a funding body, or a dissertation committee) that your research topic is relevant and worthy of being conducted.
