If you've never heard of any of these, or if you've been hoping to try them out but haven't had the chance, you can try out another AI tool right now to get a sense of what they can do: OpenAI Playground.

Here's how Playground works, and how to use it.

What is OpenAI Playground? 

Playground, or GPT-3, is a predictive language tool. In other words, it features AIs that are trained to complete or respond to whatever you type in the most authentic, "human" way possible. Bots like this have been around for years (remember Cleverbot?) but the Playground gives you a trial run with some of OpenAI's best tools.

It comes with a few different templates you can use to spark your inspiration. For example, you can pick Chat to have a conversation with the bot, or Q&A to set up a question and answer session with it. But users have had the most fun just asking it to write stories for them, or imagine ideas for new TV shows.

There are other modes that let you input text someone has already written, and have the AI insert new text inside of it, or edit it. You can also change its "temperature" (how logical the response it gives is), its "frequency" (how much it repeats itself), and more.

Playground is mostly free, but has a time limit

When you make your OpenAI account, you're given a credit of $18 to start with. Using the most expensive model, that allows the AI to produce around 650,000 words for you. 

After around four months, the free credits will expire. Once you hit that time limit (or if you use them all up before then), you'll have to buy more.

How to sign up for OpenAI Playground

Before you can use Playground, you'll need to make an OpenAI account. You can do this on a computer or phone.

1. Head to OpenAI's API page and click Sign Up in the top-right. You can log in with your Google or Microsoft account, or sign up with a separate email address. If you use a separate email, you'll need to enter a code they send to you.

2. Enter your name and (if you want) organization, then verify your phone number.

3. When you're asked How will you primarily use OpenAI , choose the option that says I'm exploring personal use .

4. After a moment, you'll be brought to your OpenAI account's landing page. Click Playground at the top of the screen.

You've now got access to the Playground.

Submitting a prompt

When you start, you'll just have a blank text box. Type anything you want into this box and click Submit at the bottom, and the AI will respond to it after a few seconds. Anything the AI gives you will be highlighted in green.

You can experiment to your heart's content with any prompt you can think of. Some examples are:

Changing models and choosing a plan

To the right of the dialog box, you can find settings you can change, including Model options to choose which AI you want to talk with. OpenAI offers four base language models: Ada, Babbage, Curie, or Davinci. Ada is the fastest, while Davinci provides the most sophisticated responses. 

There are also "fine-tuned" versions of each model that are slightly more expensive and allow you to use your own training data if you have experience with AI. However, you likely won't be able (or need) to use these during your free credit period.

The default option, text-davinci-003 , is the most advanced. The other AIs aren't as smart, but also don't spend as many credits when you generate text with them.

Adjusting advanced settings

Additionally, you'll be able to change how the AI responds in this menu. The most direct way you can do this is by selecting one of the three Mode options:

• Complete: This is the default mode, which encourages the AI to pick up on your conversation where your input leaves off.
• Insert: This mode uses the [insert] tag to fill in a blank spot of your choice.
• Edit: This mode, instead of providing entirely new content, revises existing content to your specifications (e.g., "Rewrite this in a pirate voice" or "Remove 'like' and other filler words.")

There are also the following settings you can change, which are more technical in nature and can be harder to see the direct effects of. A lot of these features exist across OpenAI's tools, so understanding them in one context will likely go a long way as similar AI tools become more mainstream.

• Temperature: This affects the "randomness" of the response you get.

Go to the OpenAI website and click on "Get Started"

Enter your email address and create a password to set up your account

Verify your email address by clicking the confirmation link sent to your inbox

Provide your phone number when prompted and complete phone verification

Once your OpenAI account is activated, you‘ll automatically receive $18 worth of free credits!

According to OpenAI, the provided $18 free credit will enable you to generate up to 650,000 words on Playground. That‘s super generous for an indefinite free trial.

You can view your remaining free credits at the top of the Playground interface.

I recommend entering your credit card details under "Billing" even though you won‘t get charged while the free credits last. This means you can seamlessly continue using Playground if you exceed the free limit and want to purchase more credits.

Now comes the fun part – let‘s dive into using Playground‘s free version!

Navigating the Playground Interface

Once you log into your OpenAI account, you‘ll see "Playground" on the top navigation bar. Click it to access the Playground interface.

Here‘s an overview of the key sections:

Text Prompt Box: This is where you enter text for the AI to generate responses to.

Models: Select from AI models like Davinci, Curie, Babbage.

Settings: Adjust parameters like max tokens, temperature, etc.

Share Button: Creates shareable link of your playground.

Examples Menu: Contains preset examples to quickly try.

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the interface. Changing the AI model and parameters will be crucial for getting the best results.

Selecting the Right AI Model

OpenAI Playground provides access to several AI models trained on massive datasets – each with their own strengths. These include:

Davinci: Most capable model with highest quality outputs. Great starting point.

Curie: Very fast model optimized for search, classification, translation.

Babbage: Specializes in computer code. Ideal for code explanations.

Ada: Generates lengthier, creative outputs. Great for stories, lyrics.

I recommend new users start off with the default Davinci model . It offers the best balance of fluency, accuracy and relevance for most Playground use cases.

The two most important parameters to adjust here are:

I‘d recommend experimenting with the temperature between 0.5 to 0.8 and max tokens in the range of 60 to 100 for starters.

Perfecting Your Prompts and Inputs

Crafting effective prompts is crucial to get the most out of the AI. Here are my top tips as an AI expert:

1. Clearly State Your Intent Upfront

Be as direct and specific as possible about what you want the AI to generate. Vague, generic prompts result in vague outputs.

Good prompt: "Write a 30-word summary of this 1000 word article about AI ethics: [insert article]"

Bad prompt: "Summarize this article [insert article]"

2. Include Examples If Possible

Providing 1-2 examples of the ideal response or output helps guide the AI significantly.

For instance:

"Q: What is blockchain?

A: Blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger technology that records transactions securely using cryptography.

Q: What is artificial intelligence?

A: Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that can perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence."

3. Break Down Long Requests

How to Write a Book in OpenAI’s Playground: A Step by Step Process

Using AI to write or brainstorm a book is not for everyone. However, for those who are curious, or those who struggle with productivity due to a disability, neurodivergence, burnout, and more, AI can often be a strong help.

And using OpenAI’s Playground is actually one of the best ways to access the AI, even though it’s a little different than using ChatGPT , Claude , or any of the other methods .

What is the OpenAI Playground?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably have heard of ChatGPT and it’s parent company, OpenAI. But not a lot of people know what OpenAI’s Playground is.

OpenAI Playground is  a tool that allows you to interact in more direct ways with models like GPT-3, GPT-4, and so on. 

It allows people to experiment freely, get real-time responses, all while having a little bit tighter control over the output then what you could get with ChatGPT.

OpenAI Playground has a pay-as-you-go model. The pricing details vary depending on which model you use, but it is relatively unexpected. Here are the pricing models for GPT 3.5 Turbo, and GPT 4, which are the two you are most likely to use.

GPT 3.5 Turbo:

• Input (4K context window): $0.0015/1K tokens
• Input (16K context window): $0.003/1K tokens
• Output (4K context window): $0.002/1K tokens
• Output (16K context window): $0.004/1K tokens
• Input (8K context window): $0.03/1K tokens
• Input (32K context window): $0.06/1K tokens
• Output (8K context window): $0.06/1K tokens
• Output (32K context window): $0.012/1K tokens

There are a couple of terms that you should understand here:

• Input is referring to how much it costs for the AI to process what you give it, i.e. your instructions. These are typically half the costs of the output
• Output refers to what the AI generates
• Tokens is a method of measuring each specific part of a word. 1K tokens typically results in 750 words
• Context Window is the number of tokens that the AI can “remember” at a given time. The wider the context window, the farther back it can remember, but also the more it costs.

So all in all, OpenAI is not expensive. In fact, if you’re using a standard GPT-4 at 8K context, there’s a good chance that each chat exchange between you and the language model will only cost a few pennies.

And that’s using one of the more expensive models.

That said, many people don’t like the pay-as-you-go model, preferring the flexibility of a subscription model like what ChatGPT has, which gives you essentially unlimited words, but at a monthly cost.

Easy to use, and and full of amazing features, you can quickly turn your book into a professional book.

Why Use OpenAI Playground Instead of ChatGPT?

But all this begs the question: why not just use ChatGPT? After all, it’s the same company, the same language models.

And that’s a good question.

But there are a few advantages for why you might want to use OpenAI Playground instead of ChatGPT. For example…

If you’re not a regular user of AI, and you only dig into it occasionally, OpenAI Playground might be a better pricing model for you.

This is because if you’re only using the AI on occasion, the pay-as-you-go pricing model is unlikely to exceed the $20/month cost for ChatGPT Plus.

OpenAI has a box that lets you input information you want the AI to remember. ChatGPT has something similar called “Custom Instructions”.

However, ChatGPT’s custom instructions has a character limit, whereas the System Box in OpenAI Playground has no limit (although bear in mind that this is a pay-as-you-go model and therefore the more you include in the System Box the more you will increase your costs).

But costs aside, this can be very useful when you have a lengthy style prompt, or a lot more context that you want the AI to understand.

It’s not a perfect solution, and ChatGPT features like Code Interpreter and Custom Instructions are lessening the need for OpenAI Playground’s features like these, but overall this System Box is a big reason why you might want to use Playground instead.

OpenAI gives you a little more control over how the large language model behaves. It includes more fine control over the following:

• The Model: this lets you indicate which of OpenAI’s models (3.5, 4, etc.) you can use.
• Temperature: indicates randomness. Sometimes more random can mean more creative but less predictable.
• Maximum length: let’s you set how much text can exist in the window (keep in mind that longer lengths will mean longer input text, i.e. more costly.
• Stop sequences: let’s you tell it when to stop. For example, when creating a list, give it a number, and the AI won’t go beyond that number.

There are other features as well, none of which are particularly relevant to authors with no technical background. But I’ve found that the model, the temperature, and the maximum length are frequently useful to adjust.

How to Write a Book in OpenAI Playground

My steps for how to write a book in OpenAI Playground are very similar to what you would do in ChatGPT.

The only major difference is that you might fiddle with the Temperature settings, or you might want to include a lot more information in the System box. 

That said, here is my 7-step system for writing with AI. As always, you can use the AI for just one of these steps, or for all of them. Just pick where you have the most pain associated with the step, and use it for that.

For instance, I love doing the outlining, so I don’t use AI for that. But I’ve found it to be a great help in other areas.

Brainstorming is the creative groundwork for your novel. Here, you'll gather ideas, themes, and concepts that resonate with your story. 

It's all about letting your imagination run wild and capturing the sparks of creativity.

Personally, I always start by brainstorming my premise and my ending, if I don’t know what they should be already.

Here are some prompt I’ve used:

Give me [NUMBER] high-concept pitches for a bestselling [GENRE] story with a unique twist, intriguing characters, and gripping emotional stakes.

Given the following premise and story information, give me [NUMBER] possible endings to this [GENRE] novel.

The synopsis is a concise summary that encapsulates the main plot points of your novel. It helps you understand the flow of your story and ensures that the critical elements align cohesively.

You can expand upon your brainstormed premise and ending using a prompt like the following:

Given the following premise and story information, give me a highly detailed synopsis for a [GENRE] story in the traditional three act structure. Each act should be clearly labeled and should build toward the ending I've described.

Other Information:

Characters are the heart of your story, and worldbuilding sets the stage on which they perform. There are many prompts you could use here, but here is a sample prompt for developing a character profile:

Write a character profile about the protagonist/antagonist/mentor of this novel:

[INSERT SYNOPSIS] 

Here is what we know so far about this character: [INSERT CURRENT SUMMARY OF CHARACTER] 

Include the following elements: [INSERT DESIRED ELEMENTS HERE]

Outlining offers a structured view of your novel's framework. It can be as detailed or as broad as you need it to be, providing a plan that you can follow as you write.

From your synopsis, you can expand it further into a fully fleshed out outline:

Using the following synopsis, create a detailed summary of the story, fleshing out additional details, and breaking it into parts using the [OUTLINE METHOD OF CHOICE]: [INSERT SYNOPSIS HERE]

When creating a story with AI, it helps to have an intermediate step between the outline and the actual writing. So fleshing out the outline into individual story beats (essentially a highly-detailed outline), can look something like this:

Take the following chapter summary, and generate a list of 12 highly detailed action beats for a script with additional STORY INFORMATION to fully flesh out the chapter. Make sure to always use proper nouns instead of pronouns.

A style prompt is possibly the most important prompt on this list, as it will affect how the prose sounds when you use AI to generate prose. 

Style prompts can be lengthy, depending on how you use them. I've seen some that go on for hundreds of words, but here is one example of a shorter one thta could work:

First person past point of view of [MAIN CHARACTER], show don't tell, deep point of view.  Realistic dialogue. Stronger verbs. Lots of conflict, drama, and description. Avoid mushy descriptions/dialogue.

Last but not least, it's time to create the prose prompt. Now many, if not most, authors will not be using AI for this step, and that's okay. In fact, I would say that AI is best used as a brainstorming tool.

However, there are many who DO want to write prose with AI, and I would do it something like this, using 2-3 story beats at a time.

Write 600 words of a chapter using the following details:

Genre: [ENTER GENRE HERE]

Tone: [ENTER TONE HERE]

Point of View: [ENTER POV/TENSE HERE]

Setting: [ENTER SETTING HERE]

Key Characters in This Scene: [ENTER CHARACTER DETAILS HERE]

Style: [ENTER STYLE HERE]

Story Beats to Cover: [INSERT STORY BEATS]

AI is an ever-shifting resource, and so there are a few additional resources that I would recommend if you want to stay on top of it.

The second is Future Fiction Academy, which is a paid subscription that gives you access to daily labs that are constantly exploring and keeping subscribers up to date on what AI can do.

Plus, it gives you a TON of instruction if you’re just starting out and just want to learn the basics.

While the OpenAI Playground is great, it has it's limitations.

First, it's not really built with authors in mind. While it's incredibly versatile, I would rely on it to do anything tailored to the author experience.

Second, it really requires a lot of prompt engineering to figure out and get the most out of it. The prompts in this article will help, but they're just a starting point.

Thankfully, there's another program that uses what OpenAI gives you under the hood, but shapes it specifically for fiction authors.

The Heartache of Calling Israel Home

I knew that as soon as we came home to Israel, I’d ask myself why we’d been so eager to get back. I’d disconnected for a few days in New York with my family, even stopped wearing the hostage necklace I wore every day, and I knew it would be hard to return.

What I didn’t know was that the day we got back I’d hear that the bodies of six young hostages had been found , shot by Hamas shortly before the Israel Defense Force (IDF) got to them.

In the weeks following Oct. 7, I couldn’t hear anything about the atrocities without breaking down. I was a new mother , only beginning to understand my role protecting the world’s most precious person, and it all felt too raw, too horrifying, too close. I walked out of rooms when people started talking. I watched no TV and avoided unnecessary news and shut down social media. I even averted my eyes in the street when I caught sight of the red letters on the hostage posters, name and age at the top, and “BRING HIM/HER HOME NOW!” printed beneath a smiling photograph.

After some weeks had passed, and the radio started playing regular songs and not only sad ones, I let myself look up at one of the posters, into the eyes of a hostage. Alex Lobanov. He wore an apron and stood next to a lemonade dispenser and smiled back at me. The simplicity of the scene, contrasted with where I knew he was now, twisted my stomach. I thought of his mother.

At an intersection by my house hung a huge poster of Hersh Goldberg-Polin in a floral printed shirt. Having grown up near my office, in the Baka neighborhood of Jerusalem, in an American family like mine, he felt just one degree away from me. Many people I know knew him. Along with thousands of others, I walked with a flag to meet his funeral procession.

I’d held a poster with Carmel Gat’s face on it – smile and curls – at one of the weekly protests for the return of the hostages a few months ago. She reportedly taught meditation and yoga to the other hostages to help them survive. Almog Sarusi was from Ra’anana, where I grew up. His father runs an electric store in my parents’ neighborhood and had a table outside his store with prayer cards and a picture of his son. I’d paused several times at Eden Yerushalmi’s poster and wondered who her friends were. I’d read about Ori Danino, who fled the tragic party on October 7 and then went back to save people.

All dead. Abandoned.

The night we were supposed to fly home from the States turned out to be the night (or morning, Israel time) of Hezbollah’s planned massive missile attack and Israel’s preemptive strike. At the gate, we received news alerts about the Tel Aviv airport shutting down, power outages up North, and Israel’s Defense Minister and IDF spokesperson warning civilians about the situation. For a few minutes – which coincided with the plane’s boarding – it looked like this might be the beginning of a much bigger war we’ve all been dreading. With little information and no time, my husband and I decided not to board. We didn’t want to take our toddler into a war zone.

Shortly after the plane took off, it became clear that this was not a regional war – just another crazy day in Israel. But now we were stuck. Almost all airlines had stopped flying to Israel, and the remaining flights were fully booked. We spent 15 hours at JFK with a 20-month-old Imri, who shouted “up-up” at every airplane he saw, but we did not go up.

At the end of another futile day at the airport that week, I walked straight up to the pilots. “Please,” I begged them. “Is there anything you can do? I want to get my family home.”

What were we so anxious to get back to? Nothing, really. Work. Daycare. Our own washing machine. Buying overpriced cottage cheese at the minimarket down the road. Being home. We had Central Park, but I missed the little playground by our house where Imri rides his baby bike and eats other kids’ Bamba.  

Finally, we made the very expensive decision to buy tickets from a different airline, with a nine-hour layover in Athens, and a 3:30 a.m. arrival in Israel. In the check-in line, an older Israeli couple smiled at Imri and told us their story of getting stuck without a flight. We met them again near the gate, looking for a smoking lounge. As soon as they found it, the woman sent her husband inside and then whispered to me, “He’s driving me crazy. If I don’t get some time away from him, I’m going to get divorced after 42 years.”

That particular blend of humor and honesty, immediate closeness and hot-blooded temper -- I’d never met her, but I knew her.

As the plane neared Ben Gurion Airport, I heard a woman behind me mutter, “Dear, fascist country.” Her words were pained and loving, like a disappointed mother.

When we awoke the next morning, the names of the dead hostages they’d found were made public. It was like reading the news in those first few weeks, checking one outlet after the other to make sure I’d gotten it right. The kind of news you can’t get out of bed from. The kind of news that devastates, nauseates, doesn’t leave you. Shock that they’d survived this whole time, and disbelief that they were shot just before we rescued them.

They should have been home. They should have hugged their parents and children and brothers and sisters so long ago. They should have been alive.

Before we left for our trip, I’d started entertaining thoughts of relocation, like many people I know. Our liberal friends, many of whom are parents, are all wondering what we’re still doing here, with one war after the other, Jewish extremism on the rise, an economy that may soon fall apart, and a government seemingly more focused on resettling the Gaza Strip than on saving lives.

“Why are we here?” I asked my husband Yoav on the night of the Iranian missile attack a few months ago. I had actually gone to sleepknowing there would be missiles a few hours later. We woke up at 2 a.m. to go to our neighbors’ bomb shelter, where Imri pet their dog as we waited for the sirens to cease. Then we walked back to our building and put him back to sleep. “How is this a normal place to raise a child?”

At Monday night’s protest, a man held a poster in Hebrew that read, “I no longer recognize my country.” I looked at it for a long time.

Here we are, in the place we were so desperate to come back to – feeling crushed, confused, and hopeless since we landed. Dreading tomorrow’s news.    

But also feeling like we’re home.      

And so with a tight chest and heavy legs, I drag myself outside with an Israeli flag week after week. To protest, fight, and try to protect everything good that still exists here. And to save the lives we still can.

Chelyabinsk Oblast is a federal subject of Russia located in the Southern Urals, part of the Urals Federal District. Chelyabinsk is the capital city of the region. It is the place where Europe borders with Asia.

The population of Chelyabinsk Oblast is about 3,419,000 (2022), the area - 88,529 sq. km.

History of Chelyabinsk Oblast

People began to settle in the Southern Urals in the Paleolithic era. Bogdanovka site on the Ural River (Kizilsky district) is the most ancient archaeological site found on the territory of the region (about 70 thousand years). The age of Paleolithic layers in Ignatievka cave (Katav-Ivanovsky district), famous for its wall paintings, is about 15 thousand years. There are numerous archaeological sites of the Stone Age, settlements of the Bronze and Iron Ages.

In the 13th century, the territory of the Southern Urals was part of the Mongol Empire. Kesene mausoleum, preserved to our days near Varna village, is an outstanding monument of the late Horde time. The first Russian settlements in what is now the Chelyabinsk region appeared in the late 17th century.

Administratively the formation of the region began in the 18th century. It was the result of Peter’s I policy aimed at developing producing forces of the country and the expansion of its borders. This was reflected in the activities of the Orenburg expedition. For military and commercial purposes the expedition founded a number of fortresses, one of them was the fortress of Chelyabinsk (1736).

More Historical Facts…

In 1737, Isetskaya province was founded that included the northern part of the present Chelyabinsk region and the Kurgan region. In 1743, Chelyabinsk became the center of the province. In 1744, Orenburg gubernia was formed, it included Isetskaya and Ufimskaya provinces.

In the second half of the 18th century, mining and metallurgical areas of the Southern Urals began to grow rapidly. Several large mining plants were built, which became the basis for future towns. The first towns were Chelyabinsk, Verhneuralsk (1781) and Troitsk (1784).

In the early 19th century, most of the territory of the region was part of the Orenburg gubernia. Since the mid-19th century, Orenburg Cossacks started the rapid development of the steppe areas. New settlements were named in honor of the battles and victories of the Russian army: Varna, Fershampenuaz, Borodino, Paris and others.

After the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway (1891-1916), the province became the largest transportation hub connecting central Russia, the Urals and Siberia.

In 1919, Chelyabinsk gubernia was formed. November, 3, 1923, Ural Oblast with the capital in Yekaterinburg was formed. January 17, 1934, Ural Oblast was enlarged and was named Chelyabinsk Oblast. Later on, the territory of the region was diminished not once. In 1943, 32 districts were transferred to the newly formed Kurgan Oblast. After that, the borders of Chelyabinsk Oblast remained almost unchanged.

During the Second World War, this region played an important role producing metals, ammunition and military equipment. After the war, Chelyabinsk became the supplier of equipment and human resources for the restoration of Stalingrad, Donbass and other areas of the USSR.

In the 1950s, part of the territory of the region was subjected to radioactive contamination as a result of the accident at the plant for processing waste “Mayak”.

The collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economic situation in the region. From 1990 to 2000, rail transportation halved. In 1995, the decline in production in all sectors was 52%, in agriculture - 44%.

February 15, 2013 a relatively large meteorite flew over the territory of the oblast. It became known as the Chelyabinsk meteorite (diameter - about 17 meters, weight - about 10 thousand tons). The meteorite exploded in the vicinity of Chelyabinsk, at an altitude of 15-25 km. Several fragments of it fell in the area of Lake Chebarkul.

Chelyabinsk Oblast - Features

Chelyabinsk Oblast is located about 1,800 km east of Moscow. The main cities are Chelyabinsk (1,179,000), Magnitogorsk (412,000), Zlatoust (159,700), Miass (150,300) and Kopeysk (145,000). Chelyabinsk and Miass are the stations on the Trans-Siberian railway.

The southeastern part of Chelyabinsk Oblast has the state border - the border with Kazakhstan. The length of the region from north to south - 490 km, from west to east - 400 km. It is comparable to the size of Hungary, Portugal, Austria, more than 2 times larger than Denmark and Switzerland, 3 times larger than Belgium and the Netherlands.

Not far from the station of Urzhumka (8 km from Zlatoust), on Uraltau Pass, there is a stone pillar. On one side it says “Europe”, on the other - “Asia”. The cities of Zlatoust, Katav-Ivanovsk, Satka are located in Europe, Chelyabinsk, Troitsk, Miass - in Asia, Magnitogorsk - in both parts of the world.

Chelyabinsk Oblast has a highly developed industry. Metallurgical, machine-building, fuel and energy, construction, agri-industrial complexes determine the industrial development of the region. Iron and steel industry stands out in the structure of the local industry (about half of the total output).

The city of Magnitogorsk is situated in the middle of one of the largest and richest iron ore deposits in the world. Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) is one of the largest steel mills in the world. Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau in Miass is a major supplier of strategic ballistic missiles for the Russian submarine fleet.

Tourism in Chelyabinsk Oblast

Chelyabinsk Oblast has unique natural and climatic conditions: picturesque landscapes, lakes, forests, caves and natural healing springs. It is the main basis for the development of tourism and recreation. Winters are cold and long, summers are relatively hot.

The northwestern part of the region is covered by forests and mountains, the rest - steppes and forest steppes. Forests cover about 24% of the territory. The highest point is Mount Bolshoy (Big) Nurgush (1406.6 meters).

Chelyabinsk Oblast is called “the land of lakes”. There are 3,170 lakes on its territory, 98 of them have areas of more than 5 sq. km., the largest lake - Uvildy - occupies 68 sq. km. The most picturesque lakes are Turgoyak and Uvildy. Many lakes have unique mineral waters and therapeutic muds. There are a lot of health resorts on the territory of the region.

There are more than 200 specially protected natural areas, including Ilmen State Nature Reserve, the historical and archaeological museum “Arkaim”, “Tanagai” and “Zyuratgul” national parks.

Skiing is actively developing. Altogether there are about 20 ski resorts, including “Abzakovo”, “Adzhigardak”, “Zavyalikha”, “Metallurg-Magnitogorsk”, “Solnechnaya Dolina”, which meet the highest European standards and are very popular.
