Students in the Program in Education are enrolled in and receive their degree from the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences even though they may work primarily with faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and at other Harvard Faculties.

The interdisciplinary nature of this program is unique, as you are encouraged to work with multiple Harvard faculty members to study education as a core while also engaging with different disciplines such as economics, psychology, public policy, sociology, or organizational behavior.

Each concentration—culture, institutions, and society; education policy and program evaluation; or human development, learning, and teaching—will equip you with domain knowledge in education, provide training in relevant disciplines, ensure rigorous preparation in a range of research methods, and promote the development of new research and knowledge with a transformative impact on education.

Student research includes a study of policies and practices to increase college student outcomes; an investigation of ethical decision-making by teachers in classrooms at the intersection of philosophy, political theory, and teacher practice; and an exploration of early behavioral and environmental predictors of language skills in infants at high and low risk for autism spectrum disorder.

Graduates have gone on to universities like Vanderbilt, University of Massachusetts Boston, George Mason University, and the University of California, Irvine. Others have secured research positions at Abt Associates, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, Rand Corporation, Mathematica, and Netflix.

Additional information on the graduate program is available from the PhD in Education , and requirements for the degree are detailed in Policies .

Human Development and Education

The Master’s in Education (Ed.M.) prepares students with the skills needed to change the world through education. HGSE’s Ed.M. centers on three pillars of study: Foundations, which focus on core skills and knowledge; Programs, which focus on specific areas of practice; and Concentrations, which are opportunities to deepen contextual knowledge. Together, these pillars empower students to create transformative learning at every level and in every role. The Human Development and Education (HDE) Program prepares students to understand and support the unique needs and healthy growth of all learners — whether you intend to explore a direct service role, start a nonprofit organization, engage in clinical or counseling work, or pursue doctoral research.

The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University was established in 1987 as a training ground for professional theater. A two-year, graduate-level program, the Institute was created with an understanding that students can best prepare for a life in the performing arts by immersing themselves in the work of a professional theater, and by studying with faculty who are practicing theater artists.

Over the past three decades, graduates of the Institute have become leaders in the arts. Graduates of the acting program have performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and at theaters around the country, while also appearing in feature films and as series regulars on numerous television shows. Graduates of the dramaturgy program serve as dramaturgs, literary managers, theater critics, and artistic directors in this country and abroad. Graduates of the voice pedagogy program teach at top American universities.

In 1998, the Institute formed a historic partnership with the Moscow Art Theater School. The birthplace of the Stanislavsky System and the artistic home of the playwright Anton Chekhov, the Moscow Art Theater (MXAT) is one of Europe’s leading companies. The partnership with MXAT has given Institute students the opportunity to train with leading Russian actors, directors, choreographers, historians, and critics, and to be immersed in one of Europe’s most vibrant theater capitals.

At this time, the Institute is on hiatus in order to explore new models of training and is currently not accepting students.

Study Abroad Options

Programs for russian language study, study abroad in a slavic country.

Time spent studying abroad will prove invaluable for students of Slavic languages. The benefits of a stay in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Prague, Cracow, or another East or Central European city are not strictly limited to increased language proficiency. Direct contact with the people and culture can be one of the most invigorating personal and intellectual experiences of a lifetime.

The number and variety of educational programs in the former Soviet Union and Central and East Europe have expanded dramatically in recent years. In order to receive credit for study abroad, students must participate in an approved program. Basic information about the long-established, high-quality programs is provided below.

Please note that in the aftermath of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, all of these approved programs have moved out of Russia. In some cases, the program as it was approved by the Office of International Education has changed significantly. Most programs have moved to other countries in the former Soviet Union where Russian continues to play a significant role in daily life, such as Kyrzgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, and Estonia. These countries provide both an excellent environment for Russian immersion and exposure to their own rich cultural traditions. Slavic Department faculty and staff are carefully monitoring the situation with study abroad in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, and are a good first resource for questions. Interested students are also encouraged to reach out to programs directly, as well as Harvard's  Office of International Education .

Preparation for Study Abroad

Although the Slavic languages pose many challenges for speakers of English, students who experience a rigorous university program of study can achieve a very high level of fluency and language proficiency by the time of graduation, especially if they participate in a well-timed summer or semester study abroad program. There is a great deal to be learned here in the classroom, however, and students are advised to discuss their future study abroad plans with Steven Clancy, the Director of the Slavic Language Program even as early as their first year of study. If the timing of your study abroad is maximally flexible, it is advised that students complete as much language study here as possible before going abroad. Ideally, students would have three years of college-level study before traveling to a Slavic-speaking country. If this is not feasible, students should at least complete two years of Slavic language study before going abroad in order to maximally benefit from their language study in a Slavic-speaking country.

Further Information and Funding Opportunities

More information about Study Abroad is also available at Harvard's  Office of International Education  web site. In addition, study abroad advisers at the Office of International Education hold "study abroad drop-in hours" every weekday, between 2pm and 4pm. The Office of International Education is located at 1414 Massachusetts Avenue, 3rd floor.

For information about funding for study abroad, please review the " Summer Funding " page at the  Office of Career Services  web site. Financial aid is available for most if not all of these programs, and any financial aid you receive from Harvard may be applied toward a semester or academic year program. Consult the Office of International Education  (OIE) for details: 496-2722.

In addition, selected Harvard grants can also be used to defray the costs of a study abroad program. For example, female students may apply for either the Isabel L. Briggs Travelling Fellowship or one of the Josephine Murray Travelling Fellowships. Each year in late October or early November the Department conducts an informal informational meeting for students interested in Summer Language and Study Abroad programs together with representatives of programs in Russia and the Harvard Summer programs in Prague and Tbilisi. Questions concerning all aspects of off-campus study are entertained at this meeting. In addition, strategies for application to these programs are outlined by the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS), the Director of the Language Program, and former participants and leaders.

Study Abroad and Transfer Credits

Students who spend a semester studying abroad should consult with the DUS to determine which courses abroad will count for which concentration credits. In general, most students who receive credit for two half-courses taken while abroad will be exempted from one semester of junior tutorial and one of their departmental electives, at the DUS’s discretion. Except in unusual circumstances, credit for the survey course will not be given for study abroad.

In general full semester concentration credit (i.e. 2 full courses) is granted to students who earn adequate grades during a semester of study in an approved program. Those who successfully complete a summer will receive half-semester concentration credit (i.e. 1 full course).

For other questions regarding credit, please see the Director of Undergraduate Studies. For questions regarding Study Abroad Programs, please see the Director of the Language Program and the Study Abroad Advisor for the Slavic Department.

Please remember that it is absolutely imperative that credit approval  be sought at OIE and with the Director of Undergraduate Studies BEFORE participation in any program!

Summer Language Study in the U.S.

Some concentrators opt to supplement their language instruction at Harvard with specialized training during the summer in the United States. Aside from standard summer school courses, some colleges and universities offer immersion programs. Students in these programs are required not only to take intensive courses, but also to speak Russian outside of class: at meals, in the dorms, on campus. Though no additional credit is offered to participants in immersion programs, many students find that the rewards are worth the extra effort and commitment.

Credit for summer school in the U.S. is offered according to the same guidelines as those for study abroad. The student must be enrolled in an approved program and, upon successful completion, will receive half-semester concentration credit (i.e. 1 full course).  Again, any student who wishes to receive credit for work completed during the summer must have the approval of OIP and the Director of Undergraduate Studies BEFORE participation in any program .

Some approved immersion programs include:

  • Indiana University Summer Workshop in Slavic, East European and Central Asian Languages (SWSEEL)
  • Middlebury Russian School
  • Bryn Mawr Russian Language Institute

Department of Education opens investigation into Harvard University's legacy admissions

July 25, 2023 / 3:40 PM EDT / CBS/AP

The U.S. Department of Education has opened an investigation into Harvard University's policies on legacy admissions , according to a group that alleges the practice is discriminatory. The department notified Lawyers for Civil Rights, a nonprofit based in Boston, on Monday that it was investigating the group's claim that alleges the university "discriminates on the basis of race by using donor and legacy preferences in its undergraduate admissions process."

Top colleges' preferential treatment of children of alumni has been facing new scrutiny since the Supreme Court last month struck down the use of affirmative action as a tool to diversify college campuses. The court's conservative majority effectively overturned cases reaching back 45 years, forcing institutions of higher education to seek new ways to achieve diverse student bodies.

An Education Department spokesperson confirmed its Office for Civil Rights has opened an investigation at Harvard and declined further comment.

The complaint was filed July 3 on behalf of Black and Latino community groups in New England. The civil rights group argued that students with legacy ties are up to seven times more likely to be admitted to Harvard and can make up nearly a third of a class, and that about 70% are White. For the Class of 2019, about 28% of the class were legacies with a parent or other relative who went to Harvard.

"Qualified and highly deserving applicants of color are harmed as a result, as admissions slots are given instead to the overwhelmingly white applicants who benefit from Harvard's legacy and donor preferences," the group said in a statement. "Even worse, this preferential treatment has nothing to do with an applicant's merit. Instead, it is an unfair and unearned benefit that is conferred solely based on the family that the applicant is born into."

A spokesperson for Harvard on Tuesday said in a statement to CBS News that the university has been reviewing its admissions policies to ensure compliance with the law following the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action.

"Our review includes examination of a range of data and information, along with learnings from Harvard's efforts over the past decade to strengthen our ability to attract and support a diverse intellectual community that is fundamental to our pursuit of academic excellence," the spokesperson said. "As this work continues, and moving forward, Harvard remains dedicated to opening doors to opportunity and to redoubling our efforts to encourage students from many different backgrounds to apply for admission."

Last week, Wesleyan University in Connecticut announced that it would end its policy of giving preferential treatment in admissions to those whose families have historical ties to the school. Wesleyan President Michael Roth said a student's "legacy status" has played a negligible role in admissions but would now be eliminated entirely.

In recent years, several schools, including Amherst College in Massachusetts, Carnegie Melon University in Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University in Maryland have also eliminated legacy admissions.
