The University of Toronto is a public research university in Ontario, Canada.

Doctorate in Philosophy Economics

The Department of Economics offers a Master of arts and a PhD in Economics. The Master of arts program includes a co-op option and the PhD program is offered jointly with Carleton University.

The programs are governed by the general regulations  in effect for graduate studies of the University of Ottawa. The joint doctoral program is governed by the regulations and procedures for Joint Graduate Programs and the general regulations of the graduate faculty at each of the two universities.

Students who have achieved at least an average of "B+" (75%) at the MA or equivalent level are admissable to the PhD program. Six terms of full-time enrollment are required.

Note that the admission to the PhD program is based on a competitive process and that a "B+" average does not guarantee admission.

Language of Instruction

The vast majority of PhD courses are taught in English, but students may write and defend their thesis in English or French. According to university regulations, students can write their papers and exams in the official language of their choice (either English or French).

Language Requirements

Proficiency in the English language is required for entry into the doctoral program.

Applicants whose first language is neither English nor French, or who have not graduated from a French-speaking or an English-speaking university, must provide proof of proficiency in one or the other.

Fast-Track from Master's to Doctoral program

Students who achieve outstanding academic performance and demonstrate high promise for advanced research during the master's program may, with the permission of the Graduate Studies Committee, transfer into the PhD progam without completing the MA, provided they have completed ECO 6120 (ECON 5020), ECO 6122 (ECON 5021), and ECO 5185 (ECON 5027) with an average of "A" or higher. Such students must take a total of at least eleven regular courses (MA and PhD levels combined) and do not receive an MA degree. However, students who transfer but do not complete the PhD can receive an MA by fulfilling all the requirements of the MA program. Please note that the minimal admission average requirements for the doctoral program must also be met.

The request for permission to transfer must be made during the second term of enrollment of earlier. The student must enroll in the PhD in the third or, at the latest, in the fourth term.

Requirements for this program have been modified. Please consult the  2019-2020 calendars  for the previous requirements.

All courses are equivalent to three units at the University of Ottawa except workshops, which are equivalent to 1.5 units.

Students must pass the six first year core courses, ECO 7119 ,  ECO 7126 , ECO 7922 , ECO 7923 , ECO 7924 and ECO 7925  within twelve months of their initial enrolment in the program. As these core courses represent the foundation of the doctoral program, should a student not attain the required minimum grade of B for any of the PhD core first-year courses, they will be offered a supplemental exam for each of the core courses in August of their first year. Students who do not pass all of the six core first-year courses within twelve months of beginning full-time study will be withdrawn from the PhD program.

In the summer term of the first year of initial enrolment in the program, students choose a primary field and register in ECO 7001 Second Year Research Paper. Students who do not successfully complete ECO 7001 and 12 units of Economics electives within 28 months of initial enrolment will be withdrawn from the PhD program.

Successful completion of each workshop is a requirement for graduation. Students must have completed the courses ECO 7119 , ECO 7126 ,  ECO 7922 , ECO 7923 , ECO 7924 , ECO 7925 ,  the four field courses, and ECO 7001 before enrolling for the workshops.

Duration of the Program

The requirements of the program are usually fulfilled within four years. The maximum time permitted is five years from the date of initial enrollment in the program, or seven years in the case of the students transferring from the master’s to the doctorate.

Minimum Standards

The passing grade in all courses is B.

Thesis Advisory Committee

During the second year of the program, a thesis advisory committee (TAC) is formed for the candidate. The Committee’s membership will be determined by the specific interests of the candidate and committee members. It will be composed of the supervisor and 2-3 additional professors. At least one member of the thesis committee, in addition to the supervisor, must be from the Department of Economics, University of Ottawa. At least one member of the thesis committee, must be from the Department of Economics at Carleton University. The TAC is responsible for guiding the student throughout the program.

A meeting between the student and the Thesis Advisory Committee will take place at least once per year. The thesis examining board may include members who are not part of the TAC.

Telfer School Research Grant (SMRG)

The value of the grant is a maximum of $4,000 for a duration of up to 1.5 years. 

The applicant must be registered as full-time student in a research-based graduate program offered by the Telfer School of Management and be supervised by a member of the Telfer faculty. The research must lead to a thesis.

Travel Grants

• Travel grants  are available to help defray the costs of attending or presenting at a research-related conference. $1,000 once in the program. 
• If you are presenting at a conference, there is  additional funding  available from the  Office of the Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies . 

Research Fund

• Provides reimbursement for some research-related expenses 
• Examples: transcription and translation costs, software licenses and training, travel for research purposes, etc.

Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP)

The  Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP)  allows individuals to withdraw funds up to $10,000 a year, tax free, to a maximum of $20,000 from their  Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) to finance training or education for themselves or their spouse or common-law partner.

Participants must start to make repayments two years after their last eligible withdrawal, or five years after the first withdrawal, depending on which due date comes first.

University of Ottawa Scholarships for International Students

The University of Ottawa (uOttawa or U of O), situated in Canada’s capital, is the largest multilingual (English-French) university in the world. Home to over 40,000 students and 5,000 faculty, the university takes pride in its cultural community that aims to foster a more open and rich learning environment.

uOttawa offers a diverse selection of 550 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with many of them consistently top ranking in Canada. International students looking to study at any of these programs can apply for University of Ottawa scholarships. This university is among the top 10 universities in the country, and among the top 150 in the world. As a bilingual university, students are encouraged to learn French, one of Canada’s official languages, but most programs are still offered in English.

In the years to come, the University of Ottawa strives to continue its movement towards sustainability, combatting racism and discrimination, and forming better connections inside the campus and outside the world.

University of Ottawa Scholarships

Undergraduate scholarships at the university of ottawa.

1. Differential Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship

• Scholarship Amount: Varies per program
• International students with a valid student permit
• Accepted to a French or French immersion program in Fall 2021 or later
• Enrolled full-time
• Taking at least three classes (9 units) in French

The Differential Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship is granted automatically to eligible international Francophone students enrolling at the University of Ottawa. Renewal of the full scholarship amount is possible until the completion of the undergraduate program (12 payments) as long as the grantee can consistently meet the requirements each academic year. This University of Ottawa scholarship may also be renewed at 50% of its total value if the student only enrolls part-time in the Spring-Summer term and if they continue to take at least two classes (6 units) in French.

2. President’s Scholarship for International Students

• Scholarship Amount: $30,000 ($7,500 per year)
• International students with a valid student visa
• Enrolled full-time in a direct-entry faculty or integrated program offered with a direct-entry faculty
• Have a minimum admission average of 92%

The President’s Scholarship is one of the most distinguished awards granted by the University of Ottawa to one of its outstanding international undergraduate students who prove to be a perfect embodiment of the school’s values and is committed to serving the community through excellent leadership and active participation in extracurricular activities.

The grantee will receive $7,500 each academic year and will be allowed to renew the scholarship if they are able to maintain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8.5 or higher. The scholarship may also be renewed at 50% of its annual value if the student has a CGPA of 8.0 to 8.4 at the end of the A.Y. Second to fourth finalists will receive a one-time award amounting to $1,500. Applications may be sent through the university’s Online Scholarships and Bursaries page.

3. Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students

• Scholarship Amount: $26,000 ($6,500 per year)

The Chancellor’s Scholarship is awarded to one excellent international student each year, someone in which the university believes will be a role model of their values and demonstrates leadership qualities.

The recipient will receive $6,500 each academic year and will be allowed to renew the scholarship if a CGPA of 8.5 or higher is maintained. This scholarship at the University of Ottawa may also be renewed at 50% of its annual value if the student has a CGPA of 8.0 to 8.4 at the end of the A.Y. The second to fourth finalists will receive a one-time award of $1,500. Applications may be sent through the university’s Online Scholarships and Bursaries page.

Postgraduate Scholarships at the University of Ottawa

• Accepted admission in the Fall term of 2021 or later in a French program OR
• Have a secondary or postsecondary diploma in French with a minimum of two (2) years of study
• Degree Offered: Master’s

The Differential Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship covers a partial amount of the Master’s enrollees’ tuition based on their chosen program. Qualified recipients are automatically awarded the scholarship and may renew this for a maximum of six (6) installments as long as the student remains enrolled full-time each term and is taking their compulsory classes in French.

2. Special Merit Scholarship

• Scholarship Amount: Varies
• Eligibility Criteria: International Master’s and Ph.D. students
• Degree Offered: Master’s and Ph.D.

The Special Merit Scholarship is an available financial aid open to all international postgraduate students at the University of Ottawa. All eligible enrollees are automatically considered once they have accepted admission into the university. This University of Ottawa scholarship amount and duration vary and will be disclosed once the offer is presented to the candidate.

3. Admission Scholarship

• Scholarship Amount: Minimum value of $72,000
• Canadian students, permanent residents, protected persons or members of a diplomatic corps, and international students
• Have an admission average of 8.0 or higher
• Enrolled full-time and without interruption throughout the scholarship (12 consecutive terms)
• Degree Offered: Ph.D.

The University of Ottawa awards its excellent doctoral students with the Admission Scholarship that values at a minimum of $72,000 in total for four years. This grant is divided into two components. A portion of the scholarship totaled at $9,000 each year is paid for by the Office of the Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, while the other half is offered in the form of assistantships or internal scholarships amounting to a minimum of $9,000 annually.

As of 2021, these three (3) discussed scholarships are the only internal scholarships offered by uOttawa. However, other external scholarships and financial aids are available to postgraduate international students in the university. Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program

Students in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels can apply for a merit-based scholarship through the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program.

Awards are available to graduate students for all disciplines of academic study at participating schools in Ontario .

Each award is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario (two thirds) and the school offering the award (one third).

How much can I get

OGS awards are based on the number of terms of your consecutive studies within an academic year:

• $10,000 for 2 consecutive study terms
• $15,000 for 3 consecutive study terms

Each OGS award is issued for:

• a minimum of 1 academic year (2 or 3 consecutive academic terms)
• a maximum of 2 years (up to 6 consecutive academic terms).

Lifetime Maximums

The OGS awards maximums are:

• Master’s students: 2 academic years
• Doctoral students: 4 academic years
• Lifetime limit (all students): 6 academic years

Who is eligible

OGS is a merit-based scholarship. Your application is assessed and ranked using criteria determined by the school you’re planning to attend.

To be considered, you must also meet the following criteria:

• You’ll be in graduate studies in the master’s or doctoral level
• You’ll be enrolled in a full-time program for 2 or more terms (21 to 52 weeks in total) for the academic year you’re submitting your application.
• You’ll be attending one of the following participating Ontario school:

Benefits of the PhD Program:

The University of Ottawa is happy to offer a scholarship program that celebrates student excellence by granting an entry scholarship of at least $72,000 for a four-year term. This Admission Scholarship consists of two parts as follows:

• A $9,000 annual scholarship funded by the Vice-Provost’s Office, together with funding for graduate and postdoctoral studies provided in increments of $3,000 per term for the first twelve terms in a row
• An additional component offered by the department or academic unit in the form of internal scholarships or assistantships with a minimum yearly value of $9,000 for a four-year period

Four PhD Students Received the 2024 DHS Research Excellence Awards

Four PhD students, Orla Putnam, Sayoko Kawabata, Soomin Kim, and Rachana Gangwani, were recently awarded the Department of Health Sciences Research Excellence Awards and presented their work at the Department’s April Research Forum. Each year these awards recognize PhD students in the DHS “who showcase research excellence in their wider academic and professional communities.”

Putnam is a fourth-year PhD candidate in the Speech and Hearing Sciences program. Her research involves characterizing what autism looks like in people who are assigned female at birth using language processing, eye tracking, and qualitative methods. She will use the award funds to support the dissemination of her research by supporting her travel costs to conferences.

“I am so honored to be receiving this award, and it feels wonderful to be recognized for my research,” said Putnam. Once she completes her PhD, Putnam’s goals are to pursue postdoctoral training in language processing and other methods of characterizing communication and establish her own research lab at a university.

Kawabata is a PhD candidate in the Occupational Science program and pursues a research focus on the occupation of play for children and youth in a historically Black neighborhood in Hillsborough, NC. She is conducting ethnographic research in this neighborhood that has experienced many immigrant families moving into its affordable housing.

“I am collaborating with a resident-led community watch group to conduct the study,” said Kawabata. “I am interested in describing and exploring how play for youth in this community is shaped through socio-historical elements and how play contributes to community cohesion.”

She plans to use the funds for research dissemination and to present at various conferences. Kawabata aspires to make use of her expertise in community-based research that she has gained in the program, and bridge that experience with the Japanese occupational science community and the rest of the world.

Gangwani is a fourth-year PhD student in the Human Movement Science program, and her research focuses on using multi-modal neuroimaging techniques to develop brain-based measures in individuals with neurological conditions across the lifespan. After completing her PhD, she hopes to secure a postdoctoral position to develop her expertise in neuroscience and neurorehabilitation.

“I’m thrilled and deeply appreciative to have received this award,” said Gangwani. “This recognition motivates me to further my research and academic pursuits, reinforcing my dedication to contributing meaningfully to the field of stroke rehabilitation.” She will use the funds to attend and present for the first time about her dissertation project at the American Society of Neurorehabilitation conference.

Kim is a third-year PhD student in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences. She studies aphasia and apraxia of speech, and is interested in discourse-based early differential diagnosis. She has used her funding to attend the Motor Speech Conference in San Diego, where she presented to her peers and colleagues.

“I was so surprised to receive this award – I did not expect to receive it, but at the same time, I was eager to hear back from the committee,” said Kim. “I am so thankful to the committee, my advisors, and myself, too, for persevering with the application.”

Kim’s goal is to better understand acquired neurological communication disorders. She wants to contribute to developing diagnostic methods that are less stressful for people with aphasia yet sensitive to the early differentiation of degenerative diseases.

Personal Journey: Gonzalez began her research journey in 2020, two years after her best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her stepsister was also diagnosed with breast cancer during Gonzalez's master’s program, inspiring her to focus on quality improvement for mammography compliance. Gonzalez herself was diagnosed with breast cancer two days before her USC Nursing DNP program interview, where she discussed breast health promotion projects.

Gonzalez Says: “This scholarship means so much to my personal growth not only as an educator but also as a nurse researcher. It will provide many resources and opportunities to reach my goals and I am grateful for the support of the university, my committee, chair, faculty advisor, pipeline program, and the dean of the College of Nursing for the opportunity to work with the Jonas Scholarship program.”

Note Students who receive a scholarship from an external source (e.g., CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, OGS, FRQ, CSC), will continue to receive the first component of the Admission Scholarship. However, if a second component is offered by their academic unit or another internal source, it will be optional for the period of validity of the external scholarship. Decisions are made by each faculty. The total value of the second component can therefore be reduced accordingly.
