Some other features include complex numbers, conversion among 200 units, support for fractions, and tons of other stuff. We used to recommend RealCalc. However, HiPER takes the cake overall. It’s arguably the best scientific calculator on Google Play. The premium version is a single $3.49 and we think that’s reasonable.

Khan Academy is one of the more traditional math apps. It lets you review and re-learn math (and other subjects) in a course-like environment. The app includes over 10,000 videos, 40,000 questions, and tons of different types of math. That includes stats, trigonometry, calculus, basic algebra, pre-algebra, arithmetic, and many more. You can take and retake as many of the same courses as you want to learn new things or as a refresher for stuff you used to know. Khan Academy’s best feature is its price. It’s completely free to use forever. That makes it a must for math apps.

LectureNotes is one of the most popular note-taking apps on mobile. It’s built with education in mind. The app lets you take notes, draw and write by hand, and even record your teacher’s lecture for later listening. Some other features include support for OneNote and Evernote, indexing and organization features, and even video recording. Some features require additional plugins. It’s a calculator but it doesn’t look or act like a regular calculator app. Instead, you write down the equation in the app like you would on paper. The app uses OCR to turn your handwriting into text and then it solves the problem from there. The app includes support for basic operations like addition and substraction, powers, roots, exponents, trigonometry, logarithms, constants (like pi), and more. It gets less useful once you get into the super high math subjects, but it’s otherwise a surprisingly cool math app.

Photomath is one of a few decent math apps with camera functionality. You basically take a picture of the problem on your paper. It provides step-by-step instruction on solving the problem, the various math needed to solve the problem, and whatever else you might need. The app supports graphs. However, it won’t replace your standard graphing calculator anytime soon. It’s an excellent study aid for middle and high school students especially with its explanations on how to solve problems. The app is free to use. Google Play says there are in-app purchases up to $9.99, but we used the free version of the app. Microsoft has a math app that works very similarly to this one and we totally recommend it as well.

Socratic is one of the newer math apps. Well, technically, it covers a variety of subjects. It works a lot like Photomath. You take a picture of your homework problem. The app spits out results, explanations, a step-by-step process to solve the problem, and more. It even includes video examples in some cases. Like most, there is a ceiling when it comes to how complex the problem can be. However, it should work for most people. It’s also completely free with no in-app purchases. Google purchased and re-released the app in 2020 so we link to Google’s version now.

Wolfram math apps

Price: Free / Up to $4.99

Wolfram has a bunch of decent math apps. The first app to check out is WolframAlpha. It contains a database of math results, help, explanations, and other information. WolframAlpha covers basically everything you can think of, including more complex stuff like number theory, discrete math, statistics, physics, chemistry, and more. It also features course-style apps for many types of math, including pre-algebra, linear algebra, discrete math, and more. Some of these apps are pretty old, though. We recommend trying them out quickly before the Google Play refund time expires.

YouTube is good for basically everything. That makes it one of the better math apps. There are a variety of content creators that deal with math. That includes straight lessons and explanations, number theory, math fun facts, math history, practical uses, and more. The app also features how-to animations, and you can scroll through multiple solving methods per problem (if there is more than one). There is a multi-functional scientific calculator built into the app, and the same goes for interactive graphs. This app can solve basically any type of math problem, as it covers basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, statistics, and more.

Solving math problems is not Google Lens’ main function, but it is one of them. All you have to do in order to get this app to work is type the Google Lens icon on your search bar, or open the Google App first, and then tap the Lens icon in the search bar. It all depends on whether you have the Google Search widget on your homescreen or not. In any case, once you open the Google Lens app, you’ll see the ‘Homework’ option at the bottom of the display.

Thanks to this feature, you can take a picture of a math problem, and Google Lens will do the best it can to provide you with a solution. The thing is, you won’t get nearly as detailed of an answer as Photomath would offer, or many other apps on the list. As already mentioned, this is not Google Lens’ primary function, and it offers only the basics, though that is to be expected.

13 fast fixes for common Android problems

Solve annoying issues and get any phone in tip-top shape with these easy-to-implement, expert-approved solutions..

Confession time: I know embarrassingly little about car repair, and I couldn’t fix a misbehaving house appliance if my life depended on it (which, on at least a couple occasions, it almost has). Heck, I can barely hang a piece of wall art without screwing something up along the way. When it comes to Android phones, though, well — I’m practically a modern-day mechanic.

Now, hang on a sec: It isn’t nearly as impressive as it sounds. I don’t have any fancy power tools or even a pair of cool-looking coveralls with my name on ’em (not yet, anyway). I’ve mostly just been using and studying Android for a long time now — since somewhere in the mid-1800s, give or take — and when you pay close enough attention to something for a long enough period, you start to see the same basic patterns popping up time and time again.

The truth is that for as “magical” as they may occasionally appear, our sleek and shiny smartphones are ultimately just appliances. And more often than not, the issues most folks have with their phones are pretty darn consistent. That means whether you’re troubleshooting your own device or trying to come to a struggling co-worker’s rescue, the odds are good that your problem can be addressed without too much trouble.

Consider this your guide — a collection of some of the most common complaints I hear about Android phones and the simplest solutions I suggest in those scenarios. Apply the knowledge to your own ailing device or pass it on to someone else who needs it, and you, too, can experience the joy of feeling like a mobile-tech mechanic (with or without the coveralls).

Android problem #1: Low storage

Ah, yes — the age-old problem of finite space. When you see a phone’s storage starting to run low, just remember this catchy little adage: “Stop hoarding stuff, you unruly digital packrat.” (Okay, so maybe it wasn’t quite as catchy as I had hoped.)

In all seriousness, though, most of us really don’t need much stored locally on our smartphones these days — especially on Android, where cloud syncing is simple and automated management is easy. Start by installing the Google Photos app and setting it up to back up all photos and videos as they’re taken. That’ll let you delete the local copies (as well as have a great way to get to all your memories from any device, anytime, even if you lose or break your current Android phone), and that alone is bound to free up tons of room.

Second, install the Files by Google app . It’ll show you all the unnecessary space-takers lurking within your phone’s storage — including those now-redundant local copies of cloud-synced images along with junk files, duplicate files, and other easily eliminated things — and it’ll give you simple one-tap buttons to clear any of that crud away.

Just tap the three-line menu icon in the app’s upper-left corner and then select “Clean” to get started.

The Files by Google app identifies areas where you can free up space and gives you a quick ‘n’ easy way to zap unneeded items away.

Finally, if you’re using one of Google’s Pixel phones, look in the Storage section of your system settings and tap the line labeled “Smart Storage.” There, you can configure your phone to automatically remove any redundant copies of already-backed-up photos and videos anytime your storage starts to get low again.Finally, if you’re using one of Google’s Pixel phones, tap the Files app’s menu icon once more and this time select “Settings” — then look for the option labeled “Smart Storage.” Activating the toggle alongside that will cause your phone to automatically remove any redundant copies of already-backed-up photos and videos anytime your storage starts to get low.

Android problem #2: Subpar stamina

We could talk about Android battery life all day, but the fastest way to make an immediate difference in your phone’s longevity is to adjust your screen settings.

First, turn down the screen’s brightness (either in the Quick Settings panel that comes up when you swipe down twice from the top of your screen or in the Display section of your system settings). The display burns through more power than anything else on your device, and the lower you can comfortably use it, the longer your phone will last with each charge. On most reasonably recent devices, you can also look for an Adaptive Brightness option that’ll automatically adjust the brightness level for you based on your current environment.

Second, set your “Screen timeout” setting (also in the Display section of your system settings) to as low of a value as you can tolerate. The less time your screen stays on when you aren’t using it, the less unnecessary battery power your phone will burn through.

If you want to manage that more intelligently — with a powerful system that lets you configure your screen to stay on automatically when you’re holding the phone at certain angles (thus indicating that you’re actively looking at it) or when you’ve got specific apps open but then to shut itself off quickly in any other scenarios — consider this advanced screen timeout trick .

Last but not least, look in that same Display area of your system settings for the Dark Theme option. Darker colors tend to consume less power than the bright hues present in most interfaces by default, so switching to the Dark Theme either all the time or on a sunset-to-sunrise schedule should extend your phone’s battery a fair bit.

The other common culprit in a stamina shortcoming is a random app that’s misbehaving and using far more resources than it should — often because it’s getting overly aggressive with background updates and completely unnecessary refreshing (paging Facebook…).

If you look in the Battery section of your system settings, you should be able to find a battery usage breakdown that’ll help you do some detective work and suss out any such offenders — then either uninstall them entirely or clamp down on their ability to do stuff when you aren’t actively using them.

Android problem #3: Too much bloatware

Unless you’re using Google’s Pixel phones, your Android device likely came loaded with lots of junk you don’t want — ranging from superfluous manufacturer-provided services ( hi, Samsung! ) to carrier-added crapola (to use the highly technical term). But fear not, for most of that can at the very least be hidden out of sight, if not eliminated entirely.

The simplest way to do that is to look in the Apps section of your system settings to find the complete list of installed applications. When you see an app that you don’t want, tap its name and then look for either the Uninstall button — or, if that isn’t present, the Disable command. You may not be able to get rid of absolutely everything that way (paging Bixby…), but you’ll be able to clear out a fair amount of clutter.

Android problem #4: A home screen mess

From built-in search bars you don’t use to silly news streams you’d rather not see, Android phones’ home screens are often anything but optimal out of the box. But you don’t have to live with what your device-maker gives you. Android has a huge array of third-party launchers — alternate environments that completely replace your phone’s stock home screen setup and app drawer arrangement. And there’s something available for practically every preference and style of working.

Android problem #5: A slow-running phone

Just like us mortals, smartphones are prone to slowing down over time as their virtual wits become worn. Unlike our mushy mammal brains, though, your phone’s response time can actually be improved.

Some of the things we just went over, in fact, should make a noticeable difference: cleaning up your storage, uninstalling unused apps (both ones that came pre-installed on your phone and ones you installed yourself but no longer use), and trying out a custom launcher for a more optimal home screen environment.

Beyond that, some of the same steps I describe in my Android data-saving guide can bring a meaningful boost to your overall device speed — things like eliminating unnecessary background activity, compressing your mobile web experience, and shifting to lightweight versions of apps. (See that article for a step-by-step breakdown in each of those areas.)

And finally, allow me to direct your attention to a tucked-away Android system setting that may make the most perceptible impact of all. It’s buried within the Android accessibility settings , but it can be beneficial for just about anyone.

So head into the Accessibility section of your system settings, then — on a Pixel phone:

• Tap “Color and motion” within the “Display” area of the screen.
• Find the line labeled “Remove animations.”
• Flip the toggle next to it into the on and active position.

On a Samsung Galaxy device, meanwhile:

• Tap “Vision enhancements.”
• Find the line labeled “Reduce animations.”

If you’re using another type of Android device beyond that, the exact placement and phrasing of the option may vary somewhat — but you should be able to find it either by hunting around in that same Accessibility section of your system settings or by searching your settings area for the word animations .

Android’s animation-disabling switch, hidden away in the system’s accessibility options, can make any phone feel instantly faster.

Now, just head back to your home screen and try moving around your phone — opening your app drawer, swiping down the notification panel, going in and out of apps, and so on. Everything should feel significantly snappier than it did before.

Android problem #6: Lasting lag (or other odd behaviors)

If your phone woes extend beyond slight slowness — and/or you’re seeing strange things happen in general, with no obvious explanation — a rogue app is almost always the answer.

The easiest way to confirm this is to boot your phone into a special state called safe mode. That puts the device into a stock-like environment, without any added apps present, so you can see if things are working normally without any of those extra variables. If they are, you can be pretty confident that an app is causing your issue.

To enter safe mode on your phone, press and hold the on-screen power icon — the same one you usually use to turn the phone off. That’ll reveal the option. (And don’t worry: It’s a temporary state. Everything will go back to normal the next time you reboot after using it!)

The exact interface may vary from one Android device to the next, but long-pressing the on-screen power icon (at left) should always reveal an option to enter the system’s safe mode (at right) for advanced troubleshooting.

Provided things seem fine while in safe mode, the best next step is to perform a full factory reset on your phone (after making sure all important data is synced or backed up somewhere, of course). Then, when you sign back into the device anew, do not accept the option to restore your apps and instead opt to start with a completely blank slate.

At that point, your phone should be working flawlessly. And you can then slowly add apps back into the mix one by one, manually, as you need them.

If your issues return at any point along the way, you should be able to narrow down the app that’s causing them quite easily — since you’ll know it’s the most recent thing you reinstalled.

And as a side perk, the reset in and of itself will likely lead to your phone feeling faster and smoother than it has in ages. It’s a good thing to do periodically to clear out the cobwebs and give yourself a fresh start.

Android problem #7: Too much rotation

Our phones are designed to work in both a portrait and a landscape orientation — but sometimes, the sensors get a little oversensitive and end up flipping between views more often than you’d want.

There are some easy answers, though:

First, on any recent Pixel device, march into the Display section of your system settings and tap the line labeled “Auto-rotate screen.” Make sure you tap the words and not the toggle.

On the screen that comes up next, confirm that you have the toggles for both “Use auto-rotate” and “Face Detection” in the on and active positions. That’ll allow your phone to use its front-facing camera to detect which way your face is positioned relative to the screen at any given moment and then have the screen’s orientation match that.

If you’re using any phone other than a Pixel — or if that Face Detection setup isn’t working the way you want — you can instead just disable the auto-rotate function entirely and then decide for yourself how you want your screen to be oriented on a moment-to-moment basis.

• On any phone that follows Google’s core Android interface, simply turn off the toggle next to “Use auto-rotate” within the Display section of the system settings.
• On a Samsung phone, the feature curiously isn’t present at all in the system settings — but you can find a toggle for it in the Quick Settings area that comes up when you swipe down twice from the top of your phone. Look for the icon labeled “Auto rotate” and tap it once to disable it (which will change its title to “Portrait,” somewhat confusingly — but that’ll do the trick).

From there on out, anytime you rotate your device, it won’t automatically change the screen’s orientation and will instead place a small icon in the corner of the screen. You can then tap that icon to change the rotation or ignore it to leave it as-is.

Android problem #8: Tiny text

Stop squinting, would ya? If the words on your phone are too damn small, head into the Accessibility section of your system settings and try out two options: “Font size,” which will increase text all throughout your phone, and “Display size” or “Screen zoom,” which will increase the size of everything on your screen.

On a Pixel phone or another device that follows Google’s standard Android interface, both options will be within the “Display size and text” area of the system accessibility settings. On Samsung devices, you’ll need to tap “Vision enhancements” and then select either “Font size and style” or “Screen zoom” to make the two adjustments.

Android problem #9: Annoying notifications

Whether it’s an overly aggressive app or, ahem, an overly aggressive texter, stop notification nuisances at their source by pressing and holding your finger to the next unwanted alert that pops up. That’ll pull up a control panel of sorts that lets you turn off the associated type of notification entirely — or just silence it so that it still shows up but doesn’t actively demand your attention.

Less annoying notifications are always just a long-press and a tap away.

And if you’re really feeling crafty, you can create powerful filters for your Android notifications to customize and control exactly how different types of alerts behave — and even, if you’re so inclined, to summarize similar notifications and make your list of pending items less overwhelming.

Android problem #10: The contacts conundrum

It’s 2024, for cryin’ out loud. Your contacts shouldn’t be accessible only on your phone — and you shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to “transfer” them from one device to another.

If you’re using a phone made by anyone other than Google, go into its Contacts app and make sure it’s set to sync your info with your Google account — not with the manufacturer’s own proprietary syncing service.

This is particularly pertinent for Samsung owners , as the company tends to sync contacts with its own self-contained service by default. That’s fine if you only want to access that info from that one phone and if you plan to purchase only phones made by Samsung in the future — eternally — but in any other scenario, that setup is not going to serve you well.

Once you make this change, your contacts will be synced with Google Contacts — which means they’ll always be immediately available within the Google Contacts website on any computer where you’re signed in and on any phone where you install the Google Contacts Android app .

Android problem #11: Call-ending challenges

Ever find yourself scrambling to end a call — but then your screen won’t come back on fast enough? Or maybe the screen comes on, but the command to hang up isn’t right there and ready?

An Android accessibility option can make your life infinitely easier by empowering you to press your phone’s physical power button anytime you’re ready to say goodbye. No need to hunt around for the right icon or even look down at your phone at all — just one button press along the device’s edge, and the person on the other end will be gone (thank goodness!).

All you’ve gotta do is look for the “Power button ends call” option in the Accessibility section of your system settings. On Pixel phones and other devices that follow Google’s standard Android interface, it’ll be within a “System controls” submenu in that area. On Samsung products, you’ll have to tap “Interaction and dexterity” and then “Answering and ending calls” to find it — and it’ll be labeled “Press Side button to end calls” (even though the “Side button” is more often than not actually just the power button).

If you dig around enough in Android’s settings — on a Pixel phone, at left, and a Samsung device, at right — you can find a switch that’ll make it much easier to end a call.

However you get there, flip that switch on — and get ready to get off a call more easily than ever.

Android problem #12: A frozen phone

One of the most frustrating Android problems of all is having a phone that’s either stuck on some process and not responding or stuck in a powered-off state and refusing to turn on. But no matter how dire things may seem, there’s almost certainly always a solution.

The simplest one is a hard reboot: Depending on your device, you’ll want to press and hold either the power button by itself for 30 seconds to a minute — or press and hold the power button and either volume-down or volume-up button together for that same amount of time (or until you feel a vibration and see something show up on the screen). If you see a strange-looking menu that says “Start” and has a picture of an Android robot, don’t worry: Just press the power button again, and your phone should boot up normally.

If nothing happens with either of those processes, try leaving your phone plugged in for a solid few hours, just to make sure the battery isn’t depleted. Then try again.

If things still aren’t coming up — and if you aren’t seeing even the standard battery indicator graphic appear on the display when you plug the phone in — well, my friend, it’s time to make your way to our final Android issue.

Android problem #13: A non-charging phone

Last but not least is the problem to end all Android problems: an Android phone that simply won’t charge (and thus also won’t power up, once its battery has been run all the way down). I’ve been there. And while it’s certainly possible that you could be facing some sort of hardware-related defect, it’s also quite likely that this is something you can fix in a jiff.

So try this: Take something like a toothpick or the end of a paper clip and very carefully and very gently dig around a little in the phone’s charging port to clear out any lint or debris that’s built up in there. It sounds crazy, I know, but sometimes, enough gunk gets collected in that area that the power cable isn’t able to establish a good connection and charge the device (or charge it consistently, without the connection coming in and out and making it difficult for much charging to happen).

Once you’ve cleared out a good amount of gunk, plug the phone in again and see if something happens. If the battery was totally dead, you might have to leave it plugged in for a while before you see any results. But there’s a decent chance this will work — and then, in a matter of minutes, you’ll be back in business.

Sometimes, the simplest fix is the most satisfying one of all.

Common Android 12 problems and how to fix them

Android 12 is here — or it is for many Android owners, at least. While some will have to wait a little while longer before they get their hands on it, many can now upgrade to the new operating system . Doing so will provide them with a wide range of useful and fun new features , from a revamped notification shade and  Material You to extra privacy controls and support for digital car keys. There's even a design refresh, giving Android an inviting new look involving bigger icons and bolder colors, all of which combine to make the system more engaging.

Accordingly, we've compiled a list of Android 12 problems and how to fix them. These range from the easily solved to those that may require a little more effort or time (such as waiting for an update).

Likewise, Android 12's rollout on other Android devices (e.g. Samsung, OnePlus, and so on) will also likely cause new hiccups. What You Need

As operating systems are updated all the time, this will be a constantly evolving article, with new problems added at regular intervals. Likewise, Android 12's rollout on other Android devices (e.g. Samsung, OnePlus, and so on) will also likely throw up some new hiccups in turn. So check back in case an issue you're experiencing isn't covered at the moment.

According to at least one user on Reddit , a bug in Google Messages was leaving the camera on in the background, quickly draining their phone's battery and causing overheating.

In April 2022, Google confirmed that it had identified the cause of this battery-draining bug and was rolling out a fix. If you're experiencing this, ensure that you have the latest update for Google Messages, which should hopefully resolve the problem.

A number of users on the Samsung Forums have complained that after updating to Android 12, they can no longer see their phone Contacts or Recent Call Log from their car when connected via Bluetooth. This means they can't use voice calling or redial recently called numbers.

Possible solution

This could be caused by the Bluetooth version settings on your phone. A suggested solution is listed below, but first you'll need to enable Developer options on your phone .

Step 1: Go to Settings , then select Developer options .

Step 2: Select Bluetooth PBAP , then choose Bluetooth BPAP version .

Step 3: Select PBAP 1.1 , then choose Apply .

Step 4: Re-select PBAP 1.2 and choose Apply .

If this solution doesn't work for you, it's worth reaching out to Samsung support for assistance.

A few users have complained that, after updating to Android 12, they can't launch Discord without their phones freezing and system UIs crashing. This certainly seems like a serious problem, particularly if you're someone who tends to use Discord frequently.

There is a simple fix, although you may need to repeat it each time you open Discord on your Pixel.

Step 1: Go to Discord.

Step 2: Select Settings , then choose Accessibility .

Step 3: Select Automatically play GIFs .

Despite the simplicity of this solution, one user who experienced this problem has also noted that they have to keep on switching off Automatically play GIFs each time they open Discord. As such, users probably won't be able to solve this issue for good until Discord launches a new update for its app or Google updates Android 12 (depending on which is the underlying source of the problem).

There’s a long thread in the Google Pixel subreddit that details how numerous users have encountered a bug where media (e.g. music) pauses randomly for no apparent reason. Such mishaps appear to be particularly common in Spotify and YouTube (as well as other media apps), so it’s likely to affect many users who have upgraded to Android 12.

There are two things you can try. First, you could try altering the battery settings of affected media apps.

Step 1: Click Settings , then select Apps .

Step 2: Choose All apps then select your media app.

Step 3: Select Battery , then choose Unrestricted .

Step 4: If this doesn't resolve things, you can also try clearing the storage and cache of any affected app by going to Settings then selecting Apps .

Step 5: Select See all apps .

Step 6: Choose Phone , then select Storage and cache (on some phones, this may just be Storage ), then choose Clear storage/cache .

Neither solution seems to have worked for most people. Because of this, your best bet remains to wait for an update for Android 12 to be made available. To check, go to Settings > System > System update . If an update is available, your phone will say so, and you’ll be able to update by tapping Download and install .

A number of users (especially of the Pixel 4a) have noticed that they’ve suffered from significant idle battery drain ever since updating to Android 12. In particular, the screen appears to use a disproportionate amount of power, with batteries running down by double-digit percentages overnight. It seems like this is an ongoing issue, with many Samsung users still reporting the problem in June 2022.

While owners of affected phones aren’t too sure of what exactly is going on here, the consensus seems to be that the always-on display — which has been redesigned for Android 12 — has become particularly hungry.

The only solution at the moment, unfortunately, is to switch off the always-on display. This should significantly reduce demands on your phone’s battery, at least while you wait for a more viable solution via an update. Here's how to do that:

Step 1: Go to Settings .

Step 2: Select Lock screen .

Step 3: Choose Always show time and info . On some phones, this may be Always on display , and you'll need to ensure it's toggled off.

Step 4: If this doesn’t make a real difference to battery drain issues, you could also try turning on Adaptive Battery:

Go to Settings and select Battery .

Step 5: Choose Adaptive preferences then select Adaptive battery .

Alternatively, if you’re experiencing excessive battery drain with Adaptive Battery active, you may want to try turning it off and seeing how that works.

Step 6: You could also try one of the following solutions:

• Try turning on Battery Saver. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery saver > Use battery saver . Alternatively, you can choose Set a schedule to activate Battery Saver based on certain conditions, such as your routine or a percentage.
• It may also be worth setting individual restrictions on battery usage for particular apps. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps . Next, pick any apps that may be or are draining your battery and then go to Battery . Lastly, select Restricted (or select Optimized if you suspect that Restricted settings may be a drain on your battery). Repeat for as many apps as required. (Also, you can check which apps are using battery by going to Settings > Battery > Battery usage .)

A number of Android 12 users have reported that they can’t use the Starbucks app on their phones. They launch the app and receive a message saying, “A system error has occurred. Please try again later”. Some users have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but this still results in the same issue for anyone running Android 12.

It looks like Starbucks has now fixed the problem, so ensure you update your Starbucks app to the latest version, and this should resolve things.

A couple of posters to the Google forum have said that their Google Assistant alarm routines stopped working properly after they updated to Android 12. It seems that the update, for whatever reason(s), interferes with or interrupts the usual unfolding of the routine. For instance, if you’ve set a routine such that music plays after you hit Snooze or Stop on the alarm, you will now find that music doesn’t play, and so on.

Sadly, there appears to be no direct solution for this problem. Originally, it was thought it would be fixed by an Android 12 update that rolled out in November. However, many users reported the problem was only fixed briefly after the update, then began reoccurring. As such, if this is still a problem for you, you'll have to sit tight and wait for a future update to resolve things.

At least one user has noted that they can’t answer calls after updating to Android 12. This is because, when their phone begins ringing, it won’t register or respond to the user’s touches on the display, making answering impossible.

There’s no obvious reason why this is happening or why it’s only the Phone app that’s affected.

Possible solutions

Fortunately, other users have suggested a few potential fixes. First, you could try resetting the Phone app's user data. Here's how to do that:

Step 1: Go to Settings then select Apps .

Step 2: Choose See all apps , then select Phone .

Step 3: Choose Storage and cache and select Clear storage . You can also select Clear cache on this same screen.

Step 4: You can also try resetting app preferences. To do this, go to Settings and select System .

Step 5: Now, choose Reset options and select Reset app preferences .

If you’re a developer (or a more tech-savvy user) and have bootloader unlocked on your phone, you can also try flashing a full OTA update via ADB from Recovery mode. Explaining how to do this is beyond the scope of this article, and it’s recommended only if you’ve done it before. Otherwise, you should just wait for a normal update to be publicly available and install that.

Vulnerability Detection – How it Works

Google currently scans every app on Google Play for dozens of common security vulnerability classes. If we spot something, we let you know so you can fix the problem. Imagine a pentesting team hunting for bugs in each of the millions of apps published on Play, rooting out issues like bad TLS configurations that expose network traffic or directory traversal vulnerabilities that let adversaries read from or write to an app’s private files.

We are committed to keeping our joint users protected. In serious cases, if a security vulnerability doesn't get fixed, Google may remove the app from Google Play to keep users safe.

Android Application Security Knowledge Base

We know that it isn’t always enough to just tell you about a vulnerability in your app; you need to know how to fix the issue and how to prevent similar issues from cropping up in the future. To this end, we are introducing our security guidance and recommendations under a new program: the Android Application Security Knowledge Base (AAKB).

AAKB aims to establish guidelines for writing secure Android software. It is a repository of common code issues, with remediation examples and explanations for implementing specific code patterns. Organic in nature, new issues are identified automatically for review with experts across the industry – ensuring broad but well-tested approaches and guidance.

Data collected from your engagement with AAKB is used to improve guidance, and to identify how to make the Android ecosystem more secure by default.

How Does it Work?

AAKB establishes clear, vetted guidance with code examples. Guidance is aligned to OWASP MASVS standards, and content is vetted in partnership with technical peers, such as Microsoft . This helps ensure the content is not biased to one party and represents state-of-the-art standards. This also provides an educational place for you to proactively remediate security risks in your applications using industry-wide standards, with direct access to knowledge from subject-matter experts.

The guidance is available through two mechanisms:

• The AAKB homepage, goo.gle/AndroidSecurityBestPractices
• Android Studio

The AAKB homepage lists each article independently, aligned to the relevant OWASP MASVS category (e.g. MASVS-STORAGE ). Anyone can view or provide direct feedback to this content. Security is an ever-changing field, and being able to update guidance on the fly means software development lifecycles can be updated dynamically with as little friction as possible.

Android Studio triggers remediation guidance from lint checks by pointing directly to AAKB articles. You can fix problems as you're building the app and before they ever reach users.

There are two methods to view remediation guidance with Android Studio:

• Built-in lint checks in the Android Studio IDE
• The open-source Android Security lint library, goo.gle/AndroidSecurityLints

Existing security lint checks within Android Studio Giraffe+ have had their descriptions updated to include a link to the relevant AAKB article, allowing you get more context as to why a particular code snippet might be potentially “at-risk”.

Meanwhile, the open-source Android Security lint checks give you access to our most recent guidance and experiments to further protect your mobile applications and get ahead of future security concerns.

Add the open source checks to your project by following the README . These lint checks all contain click-to-fix functionality that make it easy for you to write safer code with minimal effort, as well as links to the relevant AAKB articles like the built-in IDE checks.

Apple TV+ can’t seem to solve its movie problem

Apple TV+ launched almost five years ago. In that time, the service has debuted a lot of great TV shows . Some have even become mainstream hits. But Apple’s relationship with movies has been more…complicated. The company has moved from one film strategy to another, with mixed success. And most recently, critical and box office failures have plagued Apple.

Here’s why the Apple TV+ movie strategy is more confusing than ever.

How it started: Oscar bait and critical acclaim

In line with the Apple TV+ goal of making prestige content, Apple found a lot of success with its early film strategy.

2021 film CODA set a high bar when it won the top prize for films in the US: the Academy Award for Best Picture.

This achievement was especially impressive because no other streamer had ever won Best Picture—not even Netflix, with its much bigger head start.

Other film highlights from Apple’s first few years included The Tragedy of Macbeth , Wolfwalkers , On the Rocks , Cha Cha Real Smooth , and Greyhound .

Largely the company focused on critical acclaim and awards. Box office revenue didn’t matter much, as long as the films were good.

For the most part, this strategy worked.

But in 2023, things started to change, as Apple set its eye on mainstream productions.

How it’s going: Mainstream bombs

Dating back to 2023 and into this year, these are Apple’s most noteworthy films that have been released. It’s not a comprehensive list, but these are the titles Apple has thrown serious marketing weight behind:

• The Family Plan
• The Beanie Bubble
• Killers of the Flower Moon
• Fly Me to the Moon
• and soon, The Instigators

In a clear shift, most of Apple’s movies these days target mainstream crowds. Some are still award contenders—namely Killers and Napoleon—but most are simply crowd pleasers.

Out of those crowd pleasers, Apple has struggled to achieve anything approaching success…with a caveat.

Argylle was hated by critics, and became a huge box office disaster. What Apple hoped would be its first film franchise turned out to be its biggest bomb to date.

More recently, Fly Me to the Moon fared better with critics, but its box office run has nonetheless disappointed.

Several high profile films have received no theatrical release, or only a very limited run by Apple.

Ghosted, The Family Plan, The Beanie Bubble, and Tetris fall into this category. Out of the four, only Tetris received decent reviews. The rest were critically panned, and Apple’s latest release, The Instigators, looks set to continue the trend .

Yesterday, Apple shared the confusing news that: a) it was canceling the wide theatrical release for the upcoming Wolfs, while b) simultaneously ordering a sequel to the film.

So Apple started out making films that critics loved, and that won awards, but that audiences may not have cared for and didn’t earn much money.

Then it pivoted to producing movies with mass market appeal. There are still Oscar contenders thrown in , but most high-profile TV+ movies are now failing with critics and at the box office.

What’s coming up: The biggest test yet

Reports have indicated that Apple’s theatrical strategy is very much in flux . The company’s scattershot approach to theatrical clearly demonstrates that, and Wolfs’ last-minute change provides further evidence.

However, there’s one big release in the works that will be the biggest test yet for Apple’s strategy: F1.

F1 is the Brad Pitt-starring film from the director of Top Gun: Maverick. It’s set for a wide theatrical release next summer, and Apple has reportedly poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the project.

F1 carries the highest stakes yet for Apple’s new film strategy. As the company’s first attempt at a summer blockbuster , F1 needs box office success—ideally fueled by critical acclaim—to validate the current mainstream approach.

If it’s another failure at the box office, there’s likely to be a reckoning among TV+ leadership.

The caveat: Apple TV+ success

Earlier I alluded to an important caveat when measuring Apple’s mainstream-focused strategy.

The caveat is this: we have no idea how movies factor into Apple TV+ viewership or subscription numbers.

As I write this, a quick glance at the top 5 charting films on TV+ reveals that most are the critically-panned movies I mentioned before.

The Family Plan is #1, followed by Ghosted at #2, and Argylle is the fourth most-watched film.

Apple doesn’t release actual numbers, so we don’t know how many people are really watching these titles. But compared to other TV+ movies, at least, they seem to be doing pretty well.

I dont' understand the problem as the author outlines.

1) Apple has had some critical acclaim success stories in it's movies.

2) Apple now also makes some mainstream movies that are very well liked by the public but panned by the critics.

3) None of these are making hugh money at the BoxOffice.

4) Apple is shooting for a summer box-office hit next year.

I think we can all agree on these and the only place where maybe there is a disconnect comes with as long as some shows are Critically Acclaimed and most other shows are well liked by the public does apple care much about how much is brough in by box-office?

I'm sure Apple would like to 10X it's investment just from box-office on every show it makes but if it could choose between 10 more people in seats or 1 more subscriber, I'm betting they will take the 1 more subscriber.

So as long as subscriptions continue to grow and the box-office takes some of the sting out of the upfront costs, don't you think Apple will be fine with that?

What does that mean? It means that Apple’s TV strategy is messy, but it’s not altogether failing.

Even if critics don’t like Apple’s new mainstream-targeted films, and even if the box office isn’t proving friendly to those titles, viewers on Apple TV+ seem to have found value in them.

And isn’t that, ultimately, what Apple wants? Maybe. I’m just not convinced the company even knows what it wants.
