Review: ‘Money Back Guarantee’ is entertaining in parts and banks too heavily on a star cast

The ensemble film featuring Fawad Khan, Wasim Akram, others, is quite frankly a let down

tribune

When slapstick humour meets a case of mistaken identity, puns and quirky word play, a comedy of errors is born. Faisal Qureshi’s Money Back Guarantee creates a broth using the same ingredients and peppers it with social messaging and political satire to savour the taste. The now director’s brand of humour isn’t new to fans of his writing in Teen Bata Teen. But perhaps the world has moved on since…

Qureshi’s directorial debut, Money Back Guarantee (MBG), which premiered in Karachi on Thursday, was the most-awaited film to release this Eidul-Fitr. With a star-studded ensemble cast featuring the likes of Fawad Khan, Hina Dilpazeer, Gohar Rasheed, Javed Sheikh, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Kiran Malik, Adnan Jafar, Ayesha Omar, among others, alongside debut actors Wasim Akram, Shaniera Akram, Muniba Mazari and George Fulton – it was touted to be a full-blown entertainer.

movie review money back guarantee

Set in a strange land that feels part-Pakistan and part-New Jersey – actually shot in Karachi and Thailand – the film explores the dichotomy of capitalism and socialism as it dabbles in numerous societal problems, such as corruption, VIP culture, stereotyping, theft, political point-scoring, injustice and discrimination. It sets the tone for a certain brand of dramedy that is both satirical and ridiculous. The great thing about Money Back Guarantee is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously as it gathers a motley crew of degenerates to carry its plot forward, while mocking the very values it tries to instill.

These degenerates represent the various ethnicities of Pakistan as they attempt to shun while ironically perpetuating stereotypes the society propagates about them – such as Pushtoons being “dumb”, Christians being “ Karanta, Choora ” (slurs), Punjabis being “hungry,” and more. Symbolism has been used at a stretch in the film, with the setting taking jabs at the core values of the subjects it inhabits.

SPOILERS ALERT!

movie review money back guarantee

Majority of the film has been shot in Pak bank – a fictional bank that hosts the wealth of all the corrupt politicians in Pakistan – with our crew of degenerates planning to rob it. Everyone’s blood has turned white – quite literally, the Pakistani flag is represented by a WiFi signal, Pak bank’s design mimics the map of Pakistan with minor alterations to suit the rich, as it ingeniously represents how each province and part of the bank operates – or not. The “most secure” bank of the country has been designed by a lawyer, not an architect. The only way to access the millions of rupees inside its cells? You guessed it; biometric! A painting of The Last Super hanging inside the bank has been beautifully morphed to feature the greedy politicians of the country, feasting on the poor. And the politicians have been played by the same actors playing the robbers-cum-rebels to signify “ Jesi qoum, wese hukumran .”

The plot of the film revolves around the heist that our gang of amateurs set out for with the purpose of reclaiming the people’s money. The plan, however, is not foolproof and keeps on changing as the robbers fail successively. While that is meant to be hilarious, it leaves the film appearing chaotic, almost struggling to find a center. It also leaves much to the imagination, and not necessarily the things that should have been left unattended.

The plot isn’t seamlessly weaved together. There are, in fact, cause and effect issues and one can never decipher how or why somethings are happening.

The characters, albeit, are well fleshed out. Fawad’s role as a cheapskate bank manager, Bux, who caters only to the wealthy and listens only to the powerful is written to perfection. The actor also wears it like a glove as he finally embodies a non-romantic, non-emotional, grey character, widening his acting scope and career graph. His dialogue-delivery and maniacal expressions are beautiful, to say the least.

Kiran, Gohar, Mikaal, Ali Safina, Afzal Khan – part of the robber gang – display exceptional acting chops too. Sticking to his usual sidekick energy, Gohar plays an unemployed goon that struggles to provide for his wife. But somehow, his Sindhi accent doesn’t grow on you as the film progresses. It is also quite painstaking to watch each of the robbers struggle to speak in a particular accent to represent a particular ethnicity. It is because of the demand to do so that the film reinforces another stereotype about the ethnicities represented.

movie review money back guarantee

And while that may be a creative choice, given that MBG also takes a dig at the way brands are promoted in Pakistani films to appease sponsors by doing the same thing, the audience’s ability to connect with the characters is compromised.

Wasim and Shaniera’s roles aren’t very demanding. So as debut actors, they shine. Mani tries too hard to play circuit from Munna Bhai , or so it seems, while his accent also continues to annoy.

There are moments in the film that could have been cut short, and moments that the film could have done entirely without. The opening scene, for example, is too long and boring to grip the audience in. The closing scene, or scenes, are too many to call the film well-rounded. It’s as though the editors struggled to prioritise what to keep and what to do away with.

movie review money back guarantee

Something films directed by writers often struggle with is that they leave little room to breathe in terms of dialogues. Becoming too verbose at times, with each character falling in love with the sound of their own voice and every character having something to say. At times, there is so much social messaging that the message is lost. And instead of relying on the actors’ comic timing, the characters are made to give ques to laugh.

All in all, Money Back Guarantee can be watched for the variety it offers in terms of cast and characters, the awami comedy, the political jabs and definitely the scope of production. But the film could have been shortened at least half an hour, doing away with extensive social commentary, announcing of intentions and unsought resolutions. I was actually afraid ‘ Umeed ki Kiran’ will grow old -- If you know, you know.

i don’t even want to give this half a star because the entire time i felt like my brain cells were dying. like yeah the films political satire was important and i can see what they were trying to achieve but the acting, writing and just the plot in general was so bad it felt like an episode for a children’s television show. istg i’ve seen student films better than this. the movie had basically no plot, the comedy was childish and low-key offensive (especially the stereotypes like i know what they were going for and trying to depict but it ended up coming across as mockery and racist more than anything), fawad khan’s character felt like the villain from…

the last hour was an insanely hard watch.

i have no idea why everytime a filmmaker here tries to pass any political commentary they consider the audience so dumb that they have to spell it out for them. toddler written script with some laughs here and there and a cringe snoozefest throughout the movie.

This is genuinely one of the worst films I’ve ever watched… like to the point where I can’t tell if the whole movie is supposed to be a joke? I mean I was laughing at some points, but I wasn’t laughing about the jokes, I was laughing out of denial and confusion. When I walked out of the theatre, I realized that not a single part of the plot made any sense at all. The dance breaks were really entertaining tho and some shots actually quite beautiful.

Honestly not sure what to think about this film. Super high budget forsure and great camera usage. The music and dance breaks were elite. Idk what was going on during the whole time but it was pretty funny. The jokes were on point ngl

We could have witnessed a Banger of a Sattire on Pakistan Govt, had it been executed well via a good direction aswell as with some less cringe dialogues. The moments were clearly there.

Some will hate others will love it. Truthfully it’s great. Why? Because it’s not following basic pakistani media where there is always cultural clashes and romance tropes 😩. It’s definitely something different but that’s what makes it so great. Highly political so if you enjoy politics this one’s for you

Mani, Hira Mani and Fawad Khan

Money Back Guarantee (or MBG) finally hit the screens on Eid, for the movie was in production for a long time. Like The Legend of Maula Jatt , it had to face delays due to several edits and the Covid-19 wave further slowed it down. Promoted as a Fawad Khan-Wasim Akram starrer, it has come out as Pakistan’s first urban comedy, a genre untested so far in the film industry. It is the comedian/writer/director Faisal Qureshi’s directorial debut for the big screen, who has been providing entertainment for a long time, and did not disappoint this time also.

If you are a forty plus Pakistani, who grew up watching Fifty Fifty on Pakistan Television (PTV), loved Umer Sharif’s ‘Bakra Qisto (A goat for sale on installments) , laughed at the antics of ‘Jan Rambo’ in Guest House , managed time between studies and NTM’s VJ , was fond of College Jeans and was fascinated by losers like Mani and Azfar in Indus Televsion’s Sab Set Hai, Money Back Guarantee is just made for you. With actors picked from the comedy shows of yore, Faisal Qureshi comes out with a film that can be termed a mix of slapstick comedy and political satire.

The movie begins when Munda Punjabi (Punjabi boy) played by Marhoom Bilal, decides to loot a bank with Nawaz Sindhi, played by Mirza Gohar. The Pak Bank has the accounts of corrupt politicians who have kept their ill-gotten money that they have looted from the people, safe in their accounts. G.A. Muhajir (Mani), Jan Rambo (Christian Bail, who is a Christian but is out on bail), Sanam Baloch (Kiran Malik), Ilyas Kashmiri (Shayan Khan) and naswar-chewing Irfan Pathan (Mikaal Zulfiqaar) join hands with them, solely to get out of their impoverished condition. With elections for President impending, there is a tussle for power in progress between Manager Bux (Fawad Khan) and President Akram (Wasim Akram). Fawad’s sweet- faced character of Bux is a power-hungry manager, who wears rings with letters B.U.X. The corrupt and scheming Bux is willing to crush anyone who stands in his way for becoming the President. Like a typical Lahori, Bux’s mind ceases to work at the mention of Roti lag gyi (food is being served) an act that attracted laughter from many.

Fawad Khan in Money Back Guarantee

Cricketer-turned-model-turned-actor, Wasim Akram, just about managed his short role. He had the chance to dance with his wife, while keeping an eye open for whatever is happening on the premises. The former captain needs to work very hard on his acting skills and should be aware that acting in films is different from working in ads with one-liners. However, his wife Shaniera, was quite impressive in the role of a foreign journalist, who exposed the shenanigans taking place at the bank.

Fawad Khan, the main antagonist, is supported by his clumsy henchmen, Ali Safina (Zarf) and Aqdas Waseem (Zameer). They remind the viewers of Thomson and Thomson from the Tin Tin Comic series, always trying to outdo each other.

The blueprint of the Pak Bank strangely resembles the country’s map. It is not the only ‘shocker’ from MBG. Sindhi has become so poor that he is no more mehman nawaz or hospitable. ‘Mohajir’, is so frustrated that he is ready to pick a fight at the drop of a hat, the Baloch are silenced by ‘Asmat Gas Farosh’ (a humorous name), minorities always have the sword of blasphemy hanging over their head, Pashtuns always negating the notion that they are fools, while the Kashmiris simply want recognition. The only sane voice we hear among the group comes from Christian Bail, played by the veteran Jan Rambo. After sneaking into the bank, he discovers the weak security of the Bank to the team and comes up with an effective plan for the robbery. He is shown to be brave in standing up to the President during the climax scene.

Given director/actor Faisal Qureshi’s experience over the last three decades, he was able to assemble a good cast and get them to perform well. Whether it is spray-painting the portrait at the bank, or charging in with a gun like a pro, he used Mani and Mikaal Zulfiqar to perfection. It was not Mikaal but Gohar, who matched Mani’s performance. In contrast to his role as Makha Natt in The Legend of Maula Jatt (TLMJ), Gohar is perfect as a depleted laidback Sindhi, who is afraid of his wife. The Sindhi tone he adopts is marvelous, and his mannerism is likely to bring a smile to your face. The Sindhi’s contradiction between words and deeds is evident when Gohar’s character lectures about the importance of conserving water but forgets to turn off the tap.

Mani’s antics associated with the Muhajirs of the 90s, is something Karachites could easily relate to. He reminds one of the veteran Nirala, where the pan-chewing comedian was cast as a wrestler on TV, very glib in his one liner repartee. Mani’s insistence on being called G.A.Mohajir instead of Mohajir, was a taunt at the MQM party who ruled the streets back then. The famous sacks that carried the dead, was also used to perfection in MBG, as a tribute to Mohajirs.

Kiran Malik comes out as a surprise as Sanam Baloch, impressing after her performance in Shaan Shahid’s Zarrar , which was released last year. She had poetic dialogues to deliver, expressing the problems faced by Balochistan. Mikaal Zulfiqar was good but sadly, Shayan Khan’s character was not developed fully. The actor, who also happens to be the producer, miserably failed to express the pain of Kashmiris, the way a professional actor could have.

Kiran Malik

It was refreshing to see the original Noori Nath, Mr. Mustafa Qureshi, after a long gap on screen. There were extended cameos by evergreen Javed Shaikh as Head Guard, News Anchor-turned-actor Adnan Jaffar as the top cop, Hina Dilpazir as Sahiba Begum and Ayesha Umar as Mani Begum, but stand-up comedian Shafaat Ali, was too good as President Trump. Shafaat dominates after the interval, conversing in Americanised Urdu. The best part was when he reveals that he has learnt all Pakistani things before coming over: telling lies, breaking promises, defending wrongdoing, and looking down on others. The situation becomes quirky when the Head Guard is found to be intrusive despite the security system crumbling and the Top Cop cannot be held accountable due to his family influence.

The political satire and an overdose of pop culture references, restrict the movie to a certain class. Serious issues were conveyed through metaphors, reminding what as a nation we have become. The director Faisal Qureshi appears in several cameos, mostly as the voice of our conscience. The people get the rulers that they deserve (Jaisi Awaam Waisay Hukumran) gets a new meaning with this film, as the VIP culture and American influence is mocked. The high point of the movie was the scene when the entire circus turns into something serious, a moment that highlights what goodness is left in the nation.

Produced by Zashko Productions, the cinematography of Money Back Guarantee was done by Kee Hoe Kelvin, while Tyler Westen took care of the music department. Songs are few but perfectly timed, while Kami Na Ho and the mujra numbers were sweet yet powerful. MBG is not a usual Pakistan film. For those expecting a Neelam Muneer item number, a romantic angle between the characters or unnecessary punches, this movie is sadly not their cup of tea. Those who have liked it, have already gone for another viewing.

70 Years of Pakistan Series

A message from ambassador nong rong on the occasion of the chinese new year.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.

Statistically speaking, heist movies, though predictable, have been one of the most successful genres in most film industries. The protagonist, who is often a criminal mastermind, puts together a crew, hatches a plan and then pulls off the heist, either because the system has wronged him — or maybe just for the thrill. Of course not everything goes as per the plan.

The occasional bumps in the road knock everything off as was seen in the 2002 release Aankhen or in the Spanish series La Casa de Papel or in Ocean’s 8. One doesn’t know until the climax if they get away with the loot or they end up in jail. The result is, an ‘edge-of-the-seat thriller’.

This is how Fawad Khan and Kiran Malik describe their upcoming film Money Back Guarantee, which is releasing this Eid. Besides Fawad and Kiran, the ensemble cast includes Ayesha Omar, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Shayan Khan, Hina Dilpazeer and cricket legend Wasim Akram who is debuting with this film.

When the Spanish series La Casa de Papel was released, fans were quick to point out that there is an uncanny resemblance between Fawad Khan and the mastermind behind the staged heist, Alvaro Morte . So, it came as no surprise when Pakistani adman and humourist, Faisal Qureshi, the writer and director of the film Money Back Guarantee announced a film based on a bank robbery, and got Fawad Khan on board.

It is still not clear from the promos if he plays the mastermind behind the heist or if he is the one who is going to save the wealth from the robbers. Excerpts from the interview:

Wasim Akram is making his debut with this film. There is a constant debate with regards to who enjoys more stardom between film stars and sports personalities. What is your take on that?

I personally think that sports personalities are bigger stars. This is statistically supported if you see the followership they enjoy. It also has a lot to do with patriotic element and national interest attached with their work. There are thousands of people cheering for them every time they play live. People travel to other countries to witness them playing. But film stars on the other end enjoy longevity as they continue to act in their forties and fifties.

Has the importance of money for you changed over time?

I don’t value it more than relationships certainly. But, when you have family and kids to take care of, you cannot outrightly deny its importance. As you grow older you do realize that running after money is a trivial pursuit. Unfortunately, money does make the world go round and some people realise this very late in life that there is life beyond money and fame. May be someone who doesn’t have a family to support or dependents would have answered your question differently.

A thing you wish came with a guarantee in life?

The fact that life doesn’t come with any guarantee makes it more interesting. The charm of life lies in its unpredictability. If I knew from before what the future holds for me, everything around would turn boring and then you wouldn’t quest for anything. If the comfort is guaranteed in life, you wouldn’t value it as much. If health is guaranteed for life then nobody would take care of their bodies and will take it for granted.

You have contributed significantly to Pakistani cinema through The Legend of Maula Jatt. Where do you see the industry going in coming years?

I feel that with our limited resources, what we have pulled off, and how much we continue to achieve, it seems that the market for films will definitely expand in the future. But it is not fair to constantly compare our industry with others. Their budgets are unheard of in our industry. You cannot compare a film that has a budget of 15 to 20 crores here with a film with a $500 or 400 million budget.

We have seen you in many intense roles over the years on television and in films. Do you see the arrival of money back guarantee as a much needed comic relief in your career?

I love comedies; both as a viewer and as a performer. I think its relaxing. Also, I have been doing a lot of serious stuff of late so this film does give me a break too from that mood. This film has a good dose of comedy, but it is also a political satire. Let me put it this way, it’s a meme turned into a film. It is worth your time during the festive season, and I am giving you my word.
