Playing technology games and making science fun helps young kids solve visual problems and grasp ideas better

As I watched my sons, Wavhudi and Rivhavhudi, play games on my phone before bedtime, I was captivated by their enthusiasm and how deeply they were engaged – especially when the games involved maths or science. Both boys experienced speech delays and I hoped the games would help them develop their language skills. It worked.

What I saw at home has been repeatedly underscored by research: early engagement with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts through interactive tools can profoundly enhance children’s visual literacy (reading, writing and creating images) and conceptual understanding (grasping ideas).

For my Master’s degree, I’d examined how molecular biology students’ lack of visual literacy made it harder for them to grasp complex scientific concepts. This academic foundation, combined with the newfound spark in my boys, inspired my PhD research : investigating the effects of early STEM education on young children’s visual literacy and ability to grasp scientific concepts.

In a recent, related study , I explored how different types of preschool education influence children’s understanding of science and their ability to interpret visual information. The study involved children aged 4 or 5 years who were in Grade R (the year of schooling before Grade 1) from various private schools in Bloemfontein, South Africa. I observed that those exposed to STEM education were better at spatial visualisation than their peers. These children excelled in tasks that required them to recall and manipulate visual details, such as accurately reproducing elements from images, while their non-STEM counterparts often struggled.

Some people may question why all children should be exposed to STEM concepts, given that not everyone will go on to further study or careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields.

But teaching these skills at a young age is not just about preparing children for specific fields. My findings underscore the profound effects of early STEM education on cognitive development, such as fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity, innovation, logical reasoning and adaptability. These qualities are beneficial in many facets of our lives, no matter our career paths.

Testing children’s skills

In South Africa, private schools often have more flexibility than government-run (public) schools to incorporate specialised STEM curricula and innovative teaching methods tailored to early childhood education. This might include hands-on experiments like mixing colours or observing plant growth, problem-solving tasks and interactive learning through, for example, counting games and shape recognition.

Public schools, meanwhile, follow a national curriculum set by the Department of Basic Education. While this includes foundational STEM concepts, not all schools have the necessary resources, so the extent and depth of STEM instruction can vary significantly from school to school.

Though they were private institutions, the non-STEM schools in my study followed the national Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement set by the Department of Basic Education for Grade R. This does not explicitly emphasise STEM subjects. The STEM schools involved in this study, which were also private institutions, had developed their own curricula that emphasised scientific and related learning.

Drawing from study methods used elsewhere in the world , I created a special test with two main parts to measure my participants’ skills.

One tested their content knowledge. This part assessed how well the children understood basic science concepts, such as distinguishing between living and non-living things. The second evaluated the children’s ability to interpret visual information, including understanding spatial relationships and solving visual problems.

The differences between those who were STEM-educated and those who weren’t were immediately clear.

For example, I showed the children a picture of some blocks and asked them how many blocks they saw. One STEM-educated child said there were nine blocks “because some are hiding behind the others in the picture”. A non-STEM child saw “six blocks because I counted them.”

The child with STEM knowledge used advanced thinking skills to imagine where the hidden blocks might be, while their peer only counted the blocks they could see directly.

In another exercise I showed the children a picture with a dog, ball, tree, desk, boy, school bag, book and chicken and asked them to identify which ones were living things.

STEM child: “The boy, the dog and the chicken are living because they can breathe and need water to grow.” The child understood what makes something alive, using ideas like breathing and needing water.

Non-STEM child: “Only the boy is living because the dog and chicken can’t talk.”

This is a more basic, less accurate concept of what constitutes a living thing.

Game-changing learning

Based on my findings, I encourage educators to integrate STEM activities into early childhood curricula to cultivate spatial thinking, visual literacy and scientific understanding. Digital educational games and interactive learning experiences can be incorporated into lessons.

Policymakers should prioritise early STEM education, recognising its long-term benefits in preparing children for academic and professional success. This involves investing in resources, training educators, and developing curricula that embed STEM principles from the start of formal education.

My PhD research was born out of my personal experience with my sons. This journey of love, learning and relentless determination reflects my deepest aspiration: to ignite the same passion and curiosity in others that I have witnessed in my own children.

Teaching With Digital Games in Elementary School

Apps like Kahoot, Blooket, and Quizizz offer valuable feedback about what students are learning while teaching them useful skills.

What do Super Mario, board games, card games, and you have in common? The ability to facilitate engaging, fun experiences through play. Game-based learning happens when educators use games to reinforce content, provide feedback to students, assess student knowledge and understanding, and allow for concept application.

Game-based learning works because playing games, which releases dopamine , increases the creation of synapses in the brain. Game-based learning can encompass computerized games, card or board games, whole group games, small group games, and independent gaming experiences.

I use tech options for game-based learning in my classroom for several reasons, the first being how apps lend themselves so well to data collection and analysis. Kahoot , Quizizz , and Blooket  all provide data on student answers as well as graphs for whole class data. This is not something that nontechnology options can provide, at least none that I’ve encountered. Second, using technology provides my students practice with skills they’ll use throughout their lives.

Game-based learning in third grade

When I taught third grade, I used game-based learning platforms to collect assessment data, review concepts, and provide immediate learner feedback. We had a one-to-one device ratio.

The first step of establishing game-based learning in any classroom is ensuring that students know how to use the devices that are available. It was crucial that all the students could log in to the devices independently, navigate the internet browser, and use my Google Classroom, where the links to activities and games were housed. This is achievable by giving students time to practice using the technology and by providing direct instruction on how to use the devices.

Next, it’s important to give clear instructions for using the games. Modeling the tools can also be beneficial to students. I modeled navigation and gameplay with my students for various game-based learning tools, using my own computer and interactive whiteboard screen.

This is also the time to state expectations for students using technology, like how to hold the devices, use the touch screens and track pads, return the devices to a storage and charging cart, etc. While it may feel like you are wasting instructional time, this will save time in the long run and allow you to use these technology tools over and over again throughout the school year. Anchor charts can be helpful in displaying and explaining the expectations for technology usage and game-based learning in your classroom.

The game-based learning tools that I used most often in my third-grade classroom were Kahoot and Blooket. These are traditional game-based learning platforms in that they are designed like computer games and have leaderboards. I used both platforms for guided practice, for content review, and as technology options for station rotations. Both tools also provide immediate feedback on whether students answered correctly, which is helpful in correcting misconceptions. 

One of my favorite ways to use Blooket was to review fractions and math facts. My students had so much fun with this that they asked to do more math fact reviews—they didn’t want to stop or move on to the next subject.

I also added a layer of motivation to play and put forth effort into answering the questions by joining the game myself. My students tried really hard to score better in the game than I did, and they used their mathematical automaticity to do so. I plan to use this with my fourth- and fifth-grade students this year.

Game-based learning in kindergarten

When I taught kindergarten, I needed to do more explicit instruction of device usage and game navigation because my students had less experience with games and technology. I had access to iPads, which are more user-friendly for little learners. Often, there is no log-in required, which is good for young students who are still learning how to identify their letters and may not be ready to type.

Kindergarten students were very excited to use iPads and had some familiarity with touch screens, which was helpful. I would show my students the picture of the app so they knew what to click. If time permitted, I would hand out the devices with the apps opened already. As with older students, it’s important to provide direct instruction and modeling on how to play the games, as well as expectations for using technology in the classroom. 

Quizizz was a favorite game for my kindergarten students on the iPads. I created games for my students to practice their rhyming skills and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) word decoding. I used lots of clip-art images when creating games, as they have limited reading skills.

The limited reading skills brings me to a whole group game that uses a teacher device and interactive whiteboard: JeopardyLabs . Teachers can create or use a premade Jeopardy game on classroom concepts. I used JeopardyLabs to review math facts and sight words with my kindergarten students. I allowed them to tap the screen to pick their questions. 

Also, there was a time that I had Chromebooks for my kindergarten learners, but not enough for each student to have their own. In this case, I set up several devices for Kahoot and had my students work in teams to play games. We used this to review phonics skills and geometric shapes. My students loved working together to answer questions on their Chromebooks.

When choosing tools that work for me and my students, I try to use the SAMR model . Essentially, the SAMR model delineates how to pick technology tools that are intentional for the classroom, using technology to transform and enhance the activities. SAMR is applicable to all technology integration, not just game-based learning.  

Additionally, I look at the cost of technology tools when picking what to use with my students. Another reason I like resources like Kahoot, Blooket, and Quizizz is because they are free. 

Whether you are a veteran teacher, a preservice teacher, or somewhere in between, game-based learning is a beneficial practice for engaging students and for meaningful instructional design. Hopefully, with some planning and reflection, you will be on your way to facilitating game-based learning for your students.

How This Founder Uses Video Games to Transform the Education Experience

Stemuli founder and ceo taylor shead believes video games can shape the way k-12 students learn--and the way they make career decisions..

Long before Taylor Shead founded Stemuli--a Dallas-based, AI-powered edtech and workforce development platform that uses gaming to help K-12 students make career choices--she enjoyed RollerCoaster Tycoon, a video game that lets players build and manage their own amusement parks. For the 35-year-old Dallas native, the game was a chance to control a park's creative decisions, financial planning, and customer feedback. Shead also loved Restaurant Tycoon, which lets players become restaurateurs.

"My love for the Tycoon games was a signal for my potential skill set in becoming an entrepreneur," Shead says. "I have been that person since a very young age, and nobody knew to look at my gaming history in order to say, 'Taylor's is going to be an entrepreneur. This is who she is and how she's showing up in the world.'"  

Today, Shead and her team make career recommendations for students based on their behavior on Stemuli's gaming platform. Founded in 2016, the company aims to create a personalized learning experience for every person on the planet.

For Shead, learning and workforce development go hand-in-hand. "I don't care about a student learning math for the sake of learning math," she says. "You have to learn math because it's preparing you for a future career that's going to allow you to support your families and that's going to allow you to live a quality life. Our goal is to build a system that's the most engaging possible and accessible as it possibly can be, but it dramatically reduces the cost that we're spending to educate kids across the world."

To reach this ambitious goal, the company has made strategic partnerships with Stride Learning, a global leader in online education for K-12 students, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In the Stride deal, announced on Juneteenth of this year, Stemuli received an undisclosed equity investment from the Reston, Virginia-based education company that included a four-year licensing agreement. That agreement will allow Stemuli to deliver impact at scale by bringing hundreds of thousands of learners on to their platform over the next two to three years.

Last year, the Gates Foundation made a seven-figure grant to Stemuli to produce data over the next couple of years illustrating how their gaming platform can increase the quality and accessibility of education for Black and Brown communities in some of the country's largest school districts.

"The hardest damn thing that I could have chosen to do in the world is try and make a change in education and then try to also be a workforce development company in education," Shead says. "But we say we're solving the world's hardest problem in the coolest way possible."

School in a Video Game

Stemuli's early success in the edtech space came by helping kids train for jobs after high school. Students who spent four years working with Stemuli's platform and curriculum got jobs in technology, marketing, and quality assurance that paid them upwards of $60,000 a year. But then the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and the remote learning that characterized the period exposed racial disparities in K-12 education. Shead says launching "School in a Video Game" allowed her team to grab the attention of the learners who were the least engaged, but also gave them the chance to engage more advanced students who had grown bored in their online classes.

In August 2021, when Stemuli launched "School in a Video Game," a group of middle school students logged onto the platform: They created an avatar, ran around the open world education metaverse, and saw all their classmates. One student was so excited about the experience he began to cry. "I told you school was going to be a video game," his mother told him.

Shead wants to keep this promise, and help make K-12 education more accessible and fun. The company is targeting full personalization by 2026. "We're literally talking about our video game helping to replace math class," she says. "Instead of a student just sitting in front of the teacher for 30 or 45 minutes at the front of the room, the teacher might spend 10 to 15 minutes introducing a lesson. But the remainder of the time is a student in a video game with an experience that's completely personalized to who they are as an individual."  

The Future of Work

Like many founders and entrepreneurs, Shead is both a dreamer and a visionary. For her, the future of work involves a Black, working-class middle school student having a career discovery experience on the Stemuli platform that leads them down an academic path that takes them to a job at Texas Instruments, where they make the microchips that are in almost every electronic device.

In Dallas, Stemuli is a part of the Texoma Semiconductor Tech Hub, a 41-member consortium focused on strengthening the semiconductor supply chain and workforce pipeline in north Texas and southern Oklahoma. Stemuli's platform is going to be the tool that helps engage minority communities around these and other job opportunities in the semiconductor industry, which is projected to be worth $1 trillion worldwide by 2030, according to McKinsey .

"Imagine kids being able to monitor their academic progress and their skills gained, starting in middle school all the way through to them getting the certifications necessary for them to leave high school or community college and go straight into competing for one of these jobs," Shead says.  

Setting the Pace for Edtech

To create Stemuli's gaming platform and services, Shead has filled her 22-person team with game designers and engineers with experience at iconic companies like Disney, Pixar, Netflix, and Blizzard Entertainment. "We wanted to bring in people who maybe never saw themselves working in education, but are some of the most skilled at driving engagement on platform into our team," Shead says.

In April 2023, she merged Stemuli with two L.A.-based Black founder-led edtech companies: Infinity.careers and Oppti. Stemuli had achieved annual revenues in the millions of dollars for several years, Shead says, but since the merger, the company's valuation has increased by more than $20 million and they've landed some of their biggest contracts to date.

Infinity.career founder Naomi Thomas and Oppti co-founder Khiry Kamp also joined Shead's executive team: Together with Shead, they call themselves 3D. But Shead--who in 2022 became the 94th Black woman to raise over $1 million dollars in venture capital through a $3.25 million seed round co-led by Slauson & Company and Valor Ventures--is the unmistakable leader.

More than anything, though, Shead is on a mission to fundamentally enrich the lives of the learners on her platform, and she believes her greatest asset to the company comes from her identity as a Black founder in a market that has often struggled to create viable solutions for minority students.

"Being a Black founder in this space, where I understand the lived experiences of Black kids and the inequities they face in the classroom, is going to be the biggest differentiator of why Stemuli wins in the market versus anybody else," Shead says. "They talk a lot about how in the history of the world, Black people have set a lot of the culture. We're going to do the same thing in edtech that has never been done before."

Comic Relief US launches new Roblox game to help children build community virtually and in real life

NEW YORK (AP) — The notion that online gaming could help players develop charitable habits seemed bold when the anti-poverty nonprofit Comic Relief US tested its own multiverse on the popular world-building app Roblox last year.

As philanthropy wrestles with how to authentically engage new generations of digitally savvy donors, Comic Relief US CEO Alison Moore said it was “audacious” to design an experience that still maintained the “twinkle” of the organization that’s behind entertainment-driven fundraisers like Red Nose Day .

But the launch was successful enough that Comic Relief US is expanding the game this year. Kids Relief’s second annual “Game to Change the World” campaign features a magical new Roblox world , an exclusive virtual concert and a partner in children’s television pioneer Nickelodeon.

The goal is to instill empathy and raise money through a scavenger hunt across various realms, including SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Users travel through portals to collect magical tools that will improve their surroundings. The net proceeds from in-game purchases will be donated.

The community-building inherent in collaborative gaming is intended to subtly encourage off-screen acts of kindness.

“It’s a little bit like me helping you, you helping me — all of us together. I love the idea of doing that in a game space,” Moore told The Associated Press. “It’s not meant to be a banner ad or a sign that says, ‘Do Good.’ It’s meant to be emblematic in the gameplay itself.”

Nickelodeon is also promoting an instructional guide for kids to start their own local projects in real life such as backpack drives.

Quests are delivered from wizards voiced by “Doctor Who” icon David Tennant, “Veep” star Tony Hale and “Never Have I Ever” actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. One wizard invites users to “embark on an enchanted journey to awaken the heart of your community.”

The campaign will culminate in a weekend music festival on Roblox beginning Sept. 13 that features rock band Imagine Dragons, whose lead singer Dan Reynolds has focused his philanthropy on LGBTQ+ causes . Virtual acts also include Conan Gray, Poppy, d4vd and Alexander Stewart — all musical artists who got their big breaks on YouTube.

Moore said she was “blown away” by last year’s numbers. The inaugural game has been played for over 32 billion minutes and one performance received the highest “concert thumbs up rating” ever on Roblox, according to Comic Relief US.

Charitable donations are increasingly being made through gaming, according to business strategist Marcus Howard.

The fit comes naturally, he said, considering that young people value experiences such as gaming over the material possessions that past generations might have bought at a charitable auction.

“It just makes sense,” Howard said.

But he finds that partners must overcome the negative stigma associated with online chat rooms. To its credit, Howard said, Roblox combines the creativity of popular competitor Fortnite with less “toxicity” because of its emphasis on cooperation over competition.

Comic Relief US kept in mind the need to build a game that appeals to both children and their parents, Moore said.

To navigate that tricky balance, the nonprofit has adopted a mindset that she credits Nickelodeon with originating: Include parents in the conversation but speak to their children.

“Good games are good games,” Moore said. “Good games that make me feel good are good things.”

When life gives you lemons, you just might wind up with Chicago Sky tickets.

That’s what happened for two young Roseland sisters who braved the hottest day of the year Tuesday to sell lemonade in hopes of raising enough money to buy tickets to attend Chicago Sky’s Barbie Night game against the Indiana Fever.

Jade and Joy Lee, 12 and 11, set up a lemonade stand on the corner of 111th Street and Princeton Avenue with a goal of raising $700.

On Tuesday they received a gift of $2,000 for tickets to Friday night’s game.

When philanthropist Early Walker, CEO of I’m Telling, Don’t Shoot, heard about the lemonade stand he said he wanted to make sure the sisters were able to attend.

“We have to support this, there’s no way in the world kids will continue to do this if we don’t support it,” Walker said. “We talk about violence on the news all the time, we talk about the kids that are doing wrong in the community, but we don’t support this enough. It’s so cool just being able to see young entrepreneurs out here working towards something. It’s amazing.”

Walker also surprised the girls by offering to ferry them in a limousine to and from the game and treat them to dinner at a restaurant.

Jade and Joy said they inherited their love of basketball from their dad, and although they watch every Chicago Sky game on TV their dream was to watch forward Angel Reese play in person.

“I’ve been following her journey for long time,” Jade said. “I’m happy, I’m surprised.”

Brittany Powell-Lee said that when her daughters mentioned they wanted to go to a game she was on board until she saw the ticket prices.

Lyric Wilson, 2, enjoys a refreshing homemade lemonade in Roseland. The high temperature Tuesday set a record, reaching 99 degrees at O’Hare.

“The cheapest ticket was over $200, and there are three of us,” Powell-Lee said. " I had just bought all their school supplies and school uniforms. There was just no way for me to spend all that money.”

Powell-Lee told her daughters that if they wanted to go to the game, they would have to work to come up with the money for it.

“The girls love to volunteer, and they had done a lemonade stand to raise money for St. Jude’s in the past, so I thought it was a good idea to do it again,” Powell-Lee said.

Powell-Lee said she was surprised by the gift but also grateful.

“This is a dream come true,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the full experience, and I know they’re going to love it.”

Family members of Jade and Joy Lee helped make the lemonade stand at the corner of 111th Street and Princeton Avenue a success.

The girls set up their stand Monday with lemons, sugar, water and ice after school and were selling cups for $1.

Before receiving Walker’s gift, the girls had raised close to $500, Powell-Lee said.

Several family members stood alongside the girls in a show of support. They waved signs and called out to neighbors to stop by and buy.

“This is really big for them,” said their cousin Tyteana Givens, 24. “Even if this wasn’t for the game, we would still be out here. That’s just what we do in this family, we support each other.”

Success isn’t stoppng them: Jade and Joy will be back at work at their stand after school Wednesday — even though there’s a chance of rain.

The apps we cover in this guide are good learning apps not because they’re designed to make kids smarter, to drill facts, or to replace in-school learning, but because they each offer something fun, unique, and interesting for kids and adults. As with our guides to STEM and learning toys , we didn’t test scores of apps to try to find the “best” ones. Rather, most of our favorite apps have been chosen by teachers for their students in classrooms, used by Wirecutter parents and their kids, or recommended by the experts and educators we spoke with. (For more details, read about how we selected the apps in this guide.) The research Our favorite math apps, our favorite coding apps, our favorite science and exploration apps, our favorite social and emotional learning apps, our favorite ebook app, how we picked and tested. These math games don’t simply drill facts or make kids memorize but rather use visuals, narratives, and storylines to help kids discover math concepts and build their skills. We like these apps because they offer games and exercises tailored to different ages and skill levels and because they encourage adults and kids to play together. A family math app: Bedtime Math Bedtime Math (iOS and Android) Bringing math home. This free app makes math a part of daily family life, like a bedtime story. A peer-reviewed study showed that it not only helps improve kids’ math performance but also makes parents feel more comfortable with math. Buying Options Ages: 3 to 9 How it works: Bedtime Math ( iOS and Android ) seeks to do for math what the bedtime story does for literacy, by turning math into an enjoyable bonding routine between child and caregiver. The free app offers a daily word problem for children to solve together with an adult during bedtime or anytime. Each exercise centers on a short narrative or interesting fact and poses questions at four difficulty levels, from pre-K through elementary school. Why it’s great: Bedtime Math is one of the few children’s educational apps that have been evaluated in a peer-reviewed study . This particular study demonstrated that students who used the app significantly boosted their math scores; it also showed that Bedtime Math can help parents mitigate their own math anxiety , a phenomenon that can negatively affect their children’s attitudes toward math and their ability in the subject.  Jennifer Auten, an elementary school teacher at the time of our interview, told us she liked that the questions were written at a middle-school reading level, meaning an adult must facilitate the discussion but you have a choice of four levels of difficulty based on the child’s age and math level. Apps for visual math: DragonBox Numbers and DragonBox Big Numbers DragonBox Numbers (iOS, Android, and Amazon) Visual numeracy. Cute characters called Nooms help kids visualize and conceptualize numbers and arithmetic operations. DragonBox Big Numbers (iOS, Android, and Amazon) More-complex arithmetic. Kids go on adventures, solving long addition and subtraction equations in the process. Ages: 4 to 8 and 6 to 9 How it works: DragonBox Numbers ( iOS , Android , and Amazon ), aimed at kids ages 4 through 8, introduces number sense, addition, and subtraction through cute characters called Nooms. (The characters are designed to resemble Cuisenaire rods , math learning aids that introduce kids to arithmetic operations in a hands-on way.) Kids feed, slice, and sort the Nooms, developing familiarity with addition, subtraction, fractions, and ranges. In DragonBox Big Numbers ( iOS , Android , and Amazon ), for kids 6 through 9, players follow the Nooms on more complex adventures, solving long addition and subtraction equations in order to gather and trade resources. Why it’s great: The Nooms function as digital versions of what classroom teachers call math manipulatives , physical learning aids that help young children understand theoretical math concepts in a concrete way. For older kids, the DragonBox series continues on with algebra and Euclidean geometry. Many great apps teach coding to kids as young as preschool and progressing through upper elementary grades. We’ve highlighted four of these apps because they’re particularly easy to get started with and don’t require reading or, for the child or the parent, a coding background. Regardless of what app they use, parents should think of coding apps as a family activity, said Pat Yongpradit of Code.org . “You will rarely have such a rich media experience as you can when coding with your kid,” he said. Coding puzzles for beginners: Lightbot and Lightbot Jr Lightbot (iOS and Amazon) Coding puzzles. The app’s simple puzzle challenges are easy to jump into for kids and adults with no previous coding experience. Lightbot Jr (iOS and Amazon) Coding puzzles for younger kids. A slower-paced, easier set of puzzles for kids as young as preschool. Ages: 9 to 11 (Lightbot); 4 to 8 (Lightbot Jr) How it works: In Lightbot ( iOS and Amazon ), kids solve a series of simple puzzles by lining up commands that make a robot advance over obstacles and light up squares. As they master basic concepts, they add more-complex commands, such as conditionals, loops, and nested statements. Lightbot Jr ( iOS and Amazon ) follows a similar structure but at a slower pace and with simpler challenges that focus on reinforcing the basics. A minimal amount of reading is required, so pre-readers may need adult help at the beginning. Why it’s great: Project Lead The Way (PLTW), a nonprofit educational organization that promotes and develops STEM curricula and resources, told us, “The best apps for young students without previous experience are those that teach and help build logic and reasoning skills [and] critical thinking skills, and provide brain teasers.” PLTW’s curriculum writers like the Lightbot and Lightbot Jr apps as ways to get kids as young as 4 started with the basic concepts and logical structures of coding. A creative coding app: ScratchJr ScratchJr (iOS, Android, and Amazon) Visual programming. Using graphical coding blocks, ScratchJr lets kids animate characters and create storylines. Ages: 5 to 7 How it works: In ScratchJr ( iOS , Android , Amazon ), kids select characters and backdrop scenes and drag graphical programming blocks, which snap together like puzzle pieces, to make animation sequences and storylines. Although the app has some written cues, the programming blocks largely use symbols (such as arrows and stop signs) to indicate what they do (such as move the character forward or make them stop). As kids become familiar with how to structure the code, they can create multi-scene stories. Why it’s great: ScratchJr isn’t lesson-based (though you can consult a variety of curricula and tutorials for the app) but rather designed to give kids a sandbox in which to experiment, learn, and create through trial and error (the app offers sample animations as well). Pat Yongpradit of Code.org , which recommends ScratchJr among other coding apps and games, noted one particular benefit: “It’s very free-form; you’re not basically being directed down a particular path.” Younger kids will need an adult or older child to guide them as they get familiar with ScratchJr . An app for hands-on coding: Osmo Coding Awbie Osmo Coding Starter Kit for iPhone & iPad Tangible coding. The Osmo system uses physical game pieces in conjunction with the device’s screen, making scripting and coding tangible and accessible for pre-readers. This set includes a stand compatible with many iPhones and iPads. Osmo Coding Starter Kit for Amazon Fire Tablet This kit includes the same game pieces, with a stand compatible with Amazon Fire tablets. Osmo Coding Awbie (iOS and Amazon) Coding with character. This app pairs with the Osmo system, directing players to use the pieces to move Awbie through a maze and challenges. Ages: 5 to 12 How it works: The Osmo Coding Starter Kit ( iOS and Amazon ) comes with a base system—a stand and a mirror that attaches to the device’s camera—and pairs with the Osmo Coding Awbie app ( iOS and Amazon ). Kids use physical pieces marked with commands, arrows, numbers, and loops to interact with the screen-based game, creating scripts that direct a silly character, Awbie, to navigate mazes and challenges and pick up prizes such as strawberries. The Osmo base system can also work with other Osmo games . One drawback, however: We were not able to reach customer service when we ran into issues with the app. Why it’s great: Jennifer Auten, who used Osmo games in her classroom, said the fact that it combined an app with physical pieces made kids more patient and thoughtful as they worked through the challenges: “When something is purely on the screen, kids will sometimes end up just tapping as fast as they can, randomly guessing. With the manipulatives, it slows their thinking down.” Auten also noted that the physical pieces made it easier to play the game with multiple people, fostering discussion, collaboration, and group problem-solving. Kids still get the thrill and digital feedback from the app as they successfully complete each challenge. In this category we chose these apps—focused on anatomy and the natural world—because they offer kids unique, open-ended ways to explore science topics. Each app encourages kids to meander, linger, and dive deeper at their own pace. An app to see what’s inside: The Human Body The Human Body (iOS and Android) Seeing what’s inside. The Human Body offers a visually and aurally interesting way to wander through the body’s organs, systems, and functions. Ages: 4 and up How it works: In The Human Body ( iOS and Android ), kids explore anatomy by jumping around to different organs and systems—for example, watching a mouth chew food and swallow drink, sliding into a stomach breaking down food, and following flashing nerve signals as they race up to the brain. Why it’s great: The Human Body focuses less on teaching kids specific anatomical lessons and more on sparking wonder and fascination toward the body and what it can do. The app’s engaging visuals are neither cartoonish nor graphic, and the thoughtful sound effects are as compelling and instructive as the animations: Gurgles, wooshes, creaks, and spurts give kids a visceral sense of what’s happening inside them. You can toggle on or off the text labels that identify the systems and organs, but no reading is required to get deep into the app, making it equally accessible to pre-readers. An app for discovering nature: Toca Boca Jr (Toca Nature) Toca Boca Jr (iOS and Android) Toca Nature, one of the games available through Toca Boca Jr, is an open-ended building activity where kids can explore and shape the terrain, collect resources, and observe wildlife. Ages: 2 to 6 How it works: In Toca Nature , kids start with a simple plot of land where they can raise or lower mountains, create lakes, clear or plant forests, and make deserts. They can zoom in to different areas of their terrain to collect and distribute resources (like mushrooms, fish, or berries). As they change and shape the environment, different kinds of animals, plants, and fish will appear, multiply, migrate, or disappear. Social and emotional learning , which includes self-awareness, empathy, communication skills, and building relationships, among other capacities, has increasingly been recognized as a critical component of children’s education. These two apps let young kids explore different aspects of self-expression, emotions, and social play. An app for self-expression: Me: A Kid’s Diary Me: A Kid's Diary (iOS) A digital diary. This app lets kids explore self-expression through drawing, writing, photos, and audio and video. Why it’s great: The app is simple and accessible for very young kids, with frequent verbal cues and reminders to help them through the easily navigable interface. “Even without the Daniel tie-in, it could actually still be a pretty successful app for teaching a lot of social, emotional, and self-care skills,” said Harry Sawyers, Wirecutter senior editor and father of three. “But having the familiar characters and songs really helps jump-start their interest if, for example, they ‘have to go potty—stop, and go right awaaaaay!’” An app for reading: Epic ebook subscription Epic Ebook Subscription Endless ebooks. This app allows young readers to choose from up to 35,000 different books for a low monthly cost. Ages: 4 to 12 How it works: For $14 a month ($7 per month if you pay annually), kids gain access to some 35,000 children’s books in an intuitively designed app. Epic’s library is updated regularly with new titles, including classics and the site’s original content. Many of the picture books have a “Read to me” function, in which a narrator reads the text aloud and the pages turn automatically. The app also suggests books by age and based on what a child has previously read, allowing kids to easily discover new titles at their reading level. Epic works on iOS and Android tablets and smartphones. Why it’s great: While some subscription kids ebook apps tend to be populated with the kinds of uninteresting titles you’d find in a bookstore bargain bin, Epic offers an impressive library of children’s books, including many of the beloved classics and award-winning authors you’d find in a well-curated children’s library. ( The Wizard of Oz, with the original 1900 illustrations, was one memorable find that gave us many nights of rapt bedtime reading.) The app is simple enough to use that my daughters could independently browse books by the cover art and find what interested them—even when they were pre-readers. Fairy tales abound, but I’ve also found them paging through books about geology, Ramadan, and coding. Since we began researching learning apps in 2016, we’ve spoken with a range of experts, including a classroom teacher, a child developmental psychologist, a pediatrician, an astronomer, education researchers, app developers, and others. These experts have included Kathy Hirsh-Pasek , a professor of psychology at Temple University who has written about and conducted research studies on educational apps for young children; Jennifer Auten , an award-winning teacher in Cupertino, California, who at the time was using tablet and smartphone apps in her first- and second-grade classrooms; Christine Elgersma , senior editor, learning content, for Common Sense Media, an organization focused on children’s media; and Pat Yongpradit , chief academic officer at Code.org, a nonprofit that advocates for computer science education. Last, we’ve spoken with parents on our staff for recommendations of apps they and their kids love in categories such as science, music, and coding. We read articles and reports from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and child developmental psychologists and educational researchers to learn about kids’ media use and about principles for designing learning apps. Finally, we read through reviews and ratings from well-regarded children’s media sites such as Common Sense Media . The good news: research has found that educational apps can aid with student learning. The challenge is finding the good ones. Similar to what we found when researching learning toys , we discovered that developers and app stores often label apps as “educational” with little research or evidence, and few experts, to support those claims. In 2016, the AAP released a broad report on children’s use of digital media, calling for more-rigorous evaluation of apps that claim to be educational: “Unfortunately, very few of the commercially available apps found in the educational section of app stores have evidence-based design input with demonstrated learning effectiveness.” Similarly, in a 2015 article , Hirsh-Pasek writes that educational apps “present a significant opportunity for out-of-school, informal learning when designed in educationally appropriate ways” but notes later on that “[o]nly a handful of apps are designed with an eye toward how children actually learn.” In a 2019 analysis of 124 popular children’s educational apps in the Google Play Store, most scored low in offering meaningful learning or engagement, particularly those that were free. Among the top-rated apps were several Toca Boca apps and a related Daniel Tiger app, Daniel Tiger’s Stop and Go Potty ( iOS and Android ). Experts are still studying what makes learning apps successful pedagogical tools, as well as fun and interesting activities for kids. But after speaking with experts, reading research, and trying out apps ourselves, we identified a few features that seem to be common among great learning apps. Offer unique experiences: Several of the experts we spoke to noted that a good educational app should offer children something they couldn’t simply do, learn, or explore in a classroom or the real world. If the app is “basically a worksheet on screen, [or] an experience that could be replicated off screen, then that’s not a good use of the screen,” Elgersma said. “You want it to be an experience that kids could really only have in that screen world.” Be open-ended, with limits: Most of the apps in this guide are open-ended in the sense that they encourage kids to independently explore, create, and navigate within the app. But researchers say it’s important to have built-in limits, as well. The AAP has pointed out that digital games have traditionally been designed with rewards and reinforcement designed to keep kids playing as long as possible. The organization recommends that learning apps instead have “automatic ‘stops’ as the default design to encourage children and caregivers to pause the game use and turn to the 3-dimensional world.” Be engaging but not distracting: Apps have great potential to engage children through interactive features, but some research has shown that too many bells and whistles can distract children or reduce their comprehension. A good learning app uses interactive, animated, and responsive features to engage kids or enhance their comprehension, not simply to entertain. Hirsh-Pasek has written that parents should evaluate an app’s interactive features and ask: “Do the enhancements actually add value and increase engagement, or do they cause distraction?” Encourage interaction: The AAP and other organizations say that learning apps that encourage real-life interaction among multiple people—adult and child, or child and peers—can be especially strong at facilitating learning. The apps in this guide are fun and interesting for kids and adults, and many foster conversation and play outside of the app itself. As with our guide to learning toys , we focused primarily on apps aimed at kids 3 to 9 years old, though older kids can enjoy many of our recommendations, as well.
