The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Transpersonal Psychology builds upon your prior master’s degree through exploration and consideration of both classic and modern studies of transpersonal psychology. You will strengthen your research and analytic skills while simultaneously carving out a deep understanding of the multiple dimensions of our human experience.

Our PhD program is facilitated primarily online, and includes four residential seminars during the three-year program. These seminars are offered twice a year, either in person (*safety permitting) or through virtual teleconferencing, for 5 consecutive days each. You’ll experience an academic seminar that combines community building, mind-body practices, and deep reflection on key topics in the field.

Through the PhD program, we invite you to develop holistic, research-based applications to the challenges and opportunities that humans alone and in groups experience. The program applies transpersonal principles to help foster transformation individually, socially, and professionally.

To complete the doctorate in three years, you will engage in 9 units per quarter, moving through each of the core courses. You will complete your dissertation “Mini Proposal” by the middle of your second year, setting into motion your work on this major contribution to the scholarly literature. Throughout the dissertation process, you will register for a sequence of courses that support you through each research and writing phase, and that keep you in regular contact with your faculty committee.

The PhD journey takes 3 years to complete as a full-time member; part-time study can also be arranged.

Curriculum:

To receive a PhD in Transpersonal Psychology, students must successfully complete a minimum of 75 units. The following are specific degree requirements.

Core courses introduce students to foundational theories and research methods in transpersonal psychology. As part of the Core, students must attend and successfully complete four residential seminars (i.e., GPHD7000 taken four times) during their matriculation in the PhD program.)

Students deepen their knowledge of transpersonal theory, research and applications through the selection of elective courses; they may opt to pursue a concentration to fulfill a portion of the electives requirement. Concentrations are offered in four areas of study, contributing 15 of the 28 units for this area of study:

• Applied Transpersonal Psychology in Business and Organizations
• Whole Systems Approaches to Health and Well-Being
• Consciousness and Creativity Studies
• Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience

The dissertation is structured as a sequence of six 3-unit courses. Each quarter’s course, students are expected to accomplish a specified number of activities related to dissertation planning, researching and writing. The courses guide students through the various steps in developing a faculty committee and research proposal, conducting research and analyzing data, and writing and defending a comprehensive report about the results.

The Advancement to Candidacy process is designed to enable students to demonstrate their attainment of academic writing and critical thinking skills at a level appropriate for the conduct of independent dissertation research. To complete the process, students must complete the following milestones:

• GPHD8997 – Introduction to Dissertation Proposal Writing (“Mini-Proposal”) (3)
• DOC9001-1 – Dissertation: Committee Formation and Final Proposal (3), during which a meeting with the Committee concerning the dissertation proposal is held and the proposal is approved.

There are government programs that exist specifically to help students fund their education. These include grants, low-interest loans, and work-study arrangements. You may be able to use both state and federal funding.

Academic Structure

Meridian’s academic structure gives students the flexibility to navigate the University’s curricular architecture in ways that match their passions, professional goals, and other life commitments.

Students enroll in a degree program, can elect a concentration, and register for one or multiple courses each quarter. Learning Formats

Meridian's graduate degree programs are offered in two formats, Hybrid and Online. Each quarter, students take one or multiple seven-week online courses. This schedule provides students with time between quarters to rest, engage, and prepare.

The University's multiple format options are designed to enable students to pursue their graduate education at a flexible pace, combining asynchronous coursework via the University's custom social learning platform, live course video calls with faculty, synchronous student community engagement, and optional onsite or online Transformative Learning Labs in-person.

Students can optionally select Transformative Learning Lab dates, locations, and formats based on their learning style, personal interests, and professional aspirations, if they choose to, based on availability of offerings.

Online Format

In Meridian's online learning format, students can complete 100% of their coursework degree requirements online, via Meridian’s unique online learning platform and faculty-led learning model. Meridian’s online format is designed to be highly engaging and deeply human . Students build connections with faculty and fellow graduate students while taking advantage of the flexibility built-in to the University’s online courses model.

Online Transformative Learning Labs are also optionally available (often multiple times a year), sometimes as a 3+ hour live class, and sometimes over multiple days.

Hybrid Format

Meridian’s hybrid learning format combines online courses with optional onsite Transformative Learning Labs which are one-week or less. Become a phd student through the alef trust.

With our partner university, Liverpool John Moores University, Alef Trust offers a collaborative PhD in Applied Transpersonal Psychology. The collaborative basis of the PhD means that you will conduct your research under guidance from supervisors from both Alef Trust and LJMU. Given our expertise in the topic, the Alef Trust supervisor will lead in most academic aspects of the programme. Those accepted onto the programme will benefit from being registered with LJMU, giving you full access to LJMU’s Doctoral Academy .

Format : 100% online. No residential component.

This PhD award is issued by LJMU. The award certificate will be issued by LJMU on successful completion of the PhD. The certificate will state that the research programme was carried out in collaboration with Alef Trust.

Graduates of the PhD programme are entitled to attend either or both of the graduation ceremonies organised by LJMU and Alef Trust.

Applied Transpersonal Psychology

As the award title suggests, we are interested in the range of ways in which the principles and practices developed in transpersonal psychology and allied disciplines find expression in real-world applications. Such applications may include social change and sustainability, therapy and coaching, business and human resource management, research and education, and health and social care – to name but a few. Research aiming to address ‘theoretical / conceptual’ issues will also be fostered.

For the purposes of this programme, we interpret the term ‘transpersonal psychology’ broadly. We are open to any proposed research that relates to the transformative potential of humans, recognising that we are larger and more embedded in the world than many reductionist and functional psychological models suggest, that consciousness may transcend the individual brain, and that our highest aspirations may include experiences and states of being traditionally explored through spirituality and mysticism. We recognise that global issues are paramount and that changing our relationship to earth requires a shift in our understanding of consciousness amongst other changes. Our hope is that this doctoral programme can make a difference to the sense of responsibility that our cultures foster and to the ways in which we relate to other beings.

Study Length

Full time: To study full-time you must be able to commit at least 36 hours per week to your research. For full-time students the thesis can be submitted in a minimum of three years (maximum four years).

Part Time : Part-time students will be expected to devote a minimum of 12 hours per week to their research and can submit their doctoral thesis in a minimum of four years (maximum seven years).

Full-time students : The full-time fee will be 9,300 GBP per year; in the exceptional cases that extend beyond four years, subsequent years in which you are writing up the thesis and no longer conducting research will attract a continuation fee of 1,550 GBP; no other fee would be charged.

Part-time students : The part-time fee will be 6,900 GBP per year.

Fees are payable to Alef Trust. The financial arrangement with students is with Alef Trust and not directly with LJMU.

Students in England or Wales may be able to secure loans through their respective Student Finance organisations. A useful guide to securing loans can be found on the FindAPhD site  here . Graduates of Alef Trust programmes validated by LJMU or Middlesex University are entitled to a 15% discount on the fee.

* Note that while part-time PhD students can complete their degree in 4 years, Liverpool John Moores University has set the duration for student loan payments across a 6-year period as most PhD students complete their degree in 5 to 7 years. If you are accepted onto the programme as a part-time student and you receive a loan from Student Finance England (SFE), you will need to budget accordingly such that the total amount of your loan will be divided across 6 years. If you complete your degree in less than 6 years, SFE will stop your loan payments at the time of degree completion, or if you go beyond 6 years you will not receive any further funding.

Dr. Regina U. Hess  is a clinical psychologist from Germany, and holds a joint PhD in transpersonal psychology (USA) and embodied phenomenology (UK). She is a body-centered Gestalt psychotherapist, creative therapist, and transpersonal psychotherapist. Regina has broad experience in humanitarian fieldwork and research on issues of global health. She is the founder/director of the ASE World Forum (Ancient Wisdom meets Modern Science,) and maintains a private practice in Cologne, Germany, and Amsterdam, NL, with a focus on healing individual and collective/transgenerational transcultural trauma. Her work includes the integration of different shamanic traditions, especially the therapeutic use of altered states of consciousness. She is on the faculty of several international transpersonal educational institutes and also undertakes independent research. Dr. Regina U. Hess is on the Board of Directors of the European Transpersonal Association and the International Transpersonal Association. She is co-founder of the International Transpersonal Research Network, and of the EUROTAS Division of Transpersonal Research. Simona Vigo  is a transpersonal counselor and counselor trainer from the Integral Transpersonal Institute (ITI) in Milan. She is a member of AssoCounseling (Professional Association of Counselor category) in Italy.  She is also a biotransenergetic teacher and tutor supervisor of the Integral Transpersonal Counseling Training in ITI. She works as a trainer in BteBodyMindWork (psycho-bodily awareness and dynamic mindfulness practices). Simona practices as a counselor with an integral-transpersonal approach in individual and group settings. She guides workshops aimed at discovering and consolidating Soft Skills to promote students’ awareness and the expression of their talents. In particular she works in counseling to support the Charity Hospital Volunteers Association (AVO) in Milan, Italy. During her MA-degree in Philosophy, she deepened her studies in humanistic and archetypal psychology, both through university courses and numerous theoretical- experiential masters and personal paths. During the training in Transpersonal Counseling, she worked on the study of ancient spiritual traditions, in particular related to shamanism. Furthermore, Simona is the founder of the Integral Transpersonal Writing (ITW), an innovative method of writing which integrates techniques of awareness and breadth of consciousness with the philosophical and transpersonal vision. Since 2019, ITW has become a course of Integral and Transpersonal Writing for Integral Transpersonal Institute in the ITI Writing Unit, for which she is responsible. Paola Gares  is an Italian Psychologist and Psychotherapist. She accomplished her psychotherapy specialization at the Transpersonal Psychotherapy School in Milan, which has been fully recognized by the Ministry of Education and Research since 2002. During this course of study she learnt the Biotransenergetic Method, founded by Pierluigi Lattuada, psychotherapist and medical doctor. She works with patients in her practice to help them reach an inner state of equilibrium and health, according to the tenets of the perennial philosophy. Paola  guides psychotherapy and meditation groups, and collaborates with a clinical centre in Brescia to help parents with disabled children in the acceptance process. She also teaches at the Transpersonal Psychotherapy School in Milan. She has written a book entitled  La Via Maestra: Morte e Rinascita Orizzonti di Consapevolezza , about the evolutionary process of life, death and rebirth, ((according to)) based on the guidelines of Biotransenergetics.

TP 600 Transpersonal Psychology: A Survey of History and Contemporary Practices

This course will examine the creators and founders of Transpersonal Psychology and review contemporary contributions to the discipline.

TP 601 Transpersonal Philosophy

Students will study the works of Ken Wilber, the seminal philosopher of the Transpersonal movement.

TP 602 Transpersonal Psychotherapy

Human development and ego transcendence as presented in Eastern and Western approaches are integrated into a comprehensive psychotherapeutic approach in this course which draws on the brilliant scholarly work of Michael Washburn.

PT 601 Psychopathology and Psychological Appraisal

The student will work with Theodore Millon’s masterwork on Psychopathology and the DSM-IV. The student will present clinical formulations based on case studies from the student’s actual practice. These formulations are developed into Theory Base Exposition Essays which demonstrate the application of personal, and professional expertise in the clinical setting.

PY 604 Psychology of Love, Traditional Values, and Spiritual Growth

This course will demonstrate ways in which you can reach a higher level of self-understanding, thus a greater capacity for empathy, by confronting and solving your problems. The student will find valuable insight into the nature of relationships, how to recognize true compatibility, and how to distinguish dependency from love.

PY 605 Dream Therapy

This course will examine the academic and scholarly history of Dream Therapy, and review the latest scientific and psychological theories of the universe of dreams. The majority of the course is devoted to the development of techniques for lucid dreaming through experiential exercises. The student will gain a mastery of academic, scientific, and psychological concepts of dreaming.

PY 606 Practical Approaches to Common Mental Disorders

The student will learn how to recognize and treat the mental disorders most often encountered in daily clinical work. This course attempts to bridge the gap between cognitive behavioral approaches and ego psychological interpretations. Disorders are seen as emerging out of the individual’s struggle with self and environment. These techniques are not mutually exclusive but are interactive and geared toward creative change and alternatives. The specific disorders covered include depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress syndrome, sexual dysfunction, and schizophrenia.

PY 608 Death, Dying and Bereavement

One of the most difficult times in an individual’s life is the time of death. This course explores surviving the death of a loved one. It is about understanding and coping with loss. This course is both for the bereaved and the helping professional and it combines supportive personal case histories with step-by-step approaches to recovery.

PY 609 A Developmental Approach to Divorce Therapy

Divorce is a painful event under the best of circumstances: it is the end of a dream and a time of grief and loss. This course is aimed at current and future psychotherapists, and those working with divorcing families. This course will focus on divorce therapy with the most complicated issues such as ongoing disputes between parents who enlist the children on one side or the other, family violence, court battles over custody or child support, the decline of inadequate parenting, and the blending of two families. It will demonstrate principles and techniques through many live transcripts presented in the course text.

PY 611 Creating Love

This course provides a new way to understand our most crucial relationships: with parents and children, with friends and coworkers, with ourselves, and with God. This course shows us how we have been literally entranced by past experiences of counterfeit love, how we can break these destructive patterns, and how we can open ourselves to the soul-building work of real love. Practical exercises are interwoven throughout the course that becomes the teaching tool necessary to make these healthy changes.

PY 612 Course in Miracles

This course makes a fundamental distinction between the real and the unreal, between knowledge and perception. This course is arranged as a teaching device and deals with universal spiritual themes.

RP 600 Data Gathering and Analysis

This course focuses on data collection from the standpoint of knowledge dissemination and utilization. This focus requires students to understand the process of data gathering from the perspectives of research and development, social science, and problem formation and solution. This course also reviews statistical inference and description. These competencies are addressed by topic in the course presentation.

RP 601 Research Methods

This is a survey course on research in the managerial, natural, and social sciences. It focuses on the whys and hows of doing research including the areas of experimental design, data collection, types of data analysis, and presentation of results. While we explore the kinds of analysis data are subjected to and when each kind is most useful for enabling us to draw reliable conclusions, there is no actual statistical analysis in this course.

RP 602 Professional Publishing Methods

Publishing one’s work in books, journals, or magazines can boost one’s career, but having an advanced degree does not guarantee that a person will be published. In this course, the student will learn how to develop ideas for publication in books, and professional and popular journals, how to sell those ideas to editors, and how to write books and articles in plain and understandable English.

RP 605 Research Project

The Ph.D. candidate will demonstrate, using standard research methods, new knowledge in a field of study that represents his/her degree path. A Précis, outlining the topic and a specific problem to be solved, must be submitted to the candidate’s committee for pre-approval. Depending on the nature of the research, the candidate will be required to prove or disprove a stated solution or theory through documented research, data gathering, and data analysis. A summation of the findings must be submitted in written form. The written research project will be included in the candidate’s dissertation as an appendix, with its own bibliography.

PT 615 Clinical Training – 1,000 Hour Externship

The student will be required to document 1,000 hours of applied clinical training. The student will demonstrate the knowledge acquired in the field of psychology and apply it to the clinical setting. The student’s preceptor will assess the student’s educational and professional knowledge, including client interaction, recorded keeping, client assessments, and treatment plans.

TH 610 Ph.D. Dissertation – 25,000 word minimum

Upon completion of the required credits of core curriculum courses at the 600 level, the student will prepare a 25,000-word dissertation in a publishable format following Westbrook University’s published guidelines. The dissertation will reflect the student’s theoretical and practical understanding necessary for their field of concentration. The dissertation will reflect the student’s newly acquired direction in his / her techniques and a presentation of a preferred approach in the field. Findings will be based upon the core curriculum of the course, however, the student will have ample latitude in using other sources as well. The goal of the dissertation will be for the student to bring in his contributions to the field of their concentration. The required research project will be an addendum to the dissertation.

CIIS’ Community Mental Health program integrates the fundamentals of psychotherapy with cultural humility and an understanding of the impact of trauma and social systems on the individual. Developed in partnership with public and non-profit mental health agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area, this program is one of five offered through the Counseling Psychology department at CIIS. 

Graduates are prepared to practice counseling in hospitals, clinics, schools, government agencies, community non-profits, and more. Our faculty have a variety of research interests, among them: social justice advocacy for Native American Communities, social support, social capital, and social sustainability in the context of intentional community, psychoanalysis, the discourse of capitalism and the California Dream.

The Master’s in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Drama Therapy is a Board of Behavioral Sciences-approved program taught in person. As one of the first two approved Drama Therapy graduate programs in the US, we have long been investigating the dynamic and multifaceted integration of theatre and therapy. The program integrates experiential, theoretical, and clinical courses in a curriculum designed to train students to become skillful, ethical, and culturally attuned drama therapists.

East-West Psychology

The M.A. in East-West Psychology is a non-clinical-, non-license-oriented psychology degree that prepares a new type of integral psychospiritual practitioner and scholar who is educated at the intersection of the world’s wisdom traditions and sacred practices of East, West, and Earth. Our students become “meta-psychologists” who bring mentoring, healing, knowledge, communication, and mindfulness skills into a rapidly changing world.

The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology with a Concentration in Expressive Arts Therapy is a BBS-approved, 3-year, low-residency degree program for California residents. The pedagogy provides an engaging online, hybrid curriculum that weaves multimodal expressive arts, such as visual and digital arts, music, dance and movement, poetry, spoken word, and drama into all courses.

The Expressive Arts Therapy program trains future leaders in the expressive arts therapy field. Integral Counseling Psychology

CIIS’ Integral Counseling Psychology program has trained students in a vision of psychotherapy that combines major spiritual traditions of the East and West and contemporary therapeutic practices. The holistic orientation of this unique counseling program invites students to articulate their personal vision of psychology within modern theoretical approaches.

Our graduates are trained to become licensed therapists who go on to work in private practice, schools, and non-profit organizations. We offer learning paths suited to your Personal Journey. The MTC Concentration is one program with two pathways towards degree completion:

• Residential Program: Our Residential Program is designed for those students who thrive in a learning environment that is primarily in-person with a weekly meeting cadence. Classes are primarily held in person on our Nalanda campus in Boulder, Colorado.
• Low-Residency Program: Our Low-Residency or Hybrid Program is designed for those students who desire a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students in this learning path experience most of their learning sessions online. Graduate Students

To apply to the Mindfulness-based Transpersonal Counseling program, students must submit the following documentation as part of their online application:

• Transcript of all post-secondary, undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) coursework
• Statement of Interest
• Two letters of Recommendation

What is transpersonal psychology.

At some point in time, most of take a moment to look inside ourselves to discover our inner souls. For some, this might be a fleeting moment, but for others, it can last for years.

Transpersonal psychology is a field of psychology for all of the soul searchers out there. Trans translates to "beyond", and personal refers to personality. Therefore, transpersonal psychology is a field of psychology is the study of the human aspect that goes beyond the realm in which the so-called normal personality operates.

Studying transpersonal psychology often involves studying spirituality and the parts of the ego that are typically unexplored. Because this field of psychology deals with spirituality, there is often a religious aspect to it as well. This often involves getting acquainted with previously unknown levels of consciousness and life beyond the physical plane.

Transpersonal psychology has one of the more interesting histories of all fields of psychology. It started during the psychedelic hippie wave of the 1960's. It was around this time that two Harvard psychologists, Richard Alpert and Timothy Leary, began experimenting with psychedelic drugs, namely LSD and psychedelic mushrooms. Their experiments were meant to discover altered states of consciousness and transpersonal aspects of the human psyche. Although these two unorthodox professionals were fired from the university after their unusual experiments, the seed of transpersonal psychology had been planted and had begun to grow. In 1967, a small group of psychology professionals gathered to create a field of psychology with the purpose of studying all areas of human existence, including our transpersonal existence. From this group, transpersonal psychology began to come into its own.

Today, psychedelic drugs are not used to aid those in the field of transpersonal psychology. At least not in traditional circles. It is, however, still a growing field, especially considering humans are becoming more spiritual and looking for new holistic ways to feel better about ourselves and our lives.

Why Do We Need Transpersonal Psychology?

Transpersonal psychologists believe that to be at our peak performance in life, our bodies have to be completely healthy. Medical doctors can help us take care of our physical bodies, and traditional psychologists can help us take care of our minds. Transpersonal psychologists can help take care of the often ignored soul.

Having a healthy mind, body, and soul can lead to a much healthier and happier existence. The field of transpersonal psychology can also help people realize that people are ultimately spiritual beings in physical bodies, and that our consciousness has more than one level. By understanding these concepts, individuals will often have an easier time reaching self-actualization and self-fulfillment in life.

What Does a Transpersonal Psychologist Do?

Transpersonal psychologists work directly with people that might be "lost" spiritually, or just those that are looking for help "finding themselves" in order to leave a happier life. These professionals can also help patients change their negative behaviors, improve their relationships, or even just explore their spiritual sides.

Professionals in this field might use a number of different types of therapy and counseling to help guide their patients. They might use talk therapy, for instance, just as a traditional psychologist would. However they might also combine this traditional type of therapy with spiritual aspects as well.

Therapy and counseling in transpersonal psychology might involve such things as meditation, dream work, altered states of consciousness, and vision quests. These types of therapies can be used to help patients see themselves not merely as flesh, blood, and bones, but as diving individuals with a heightened sense of the world around them.

Where Do Transpersonal Psychologists Work?

Because transpersonal psychology is still thought to be quite unusual, it might be somewhat difficult for some individuals to find employment in this field. Businesses like spas and spiritual retreats, however, might hire transpersonal psychologists, as will a few mental health clinics.

The majority of transpersonal psychologists, though, will usually start their own private practices, seeing patients at their own convenience. Those with advanced degrees might also be able to find employment teaching at colleges and universities.

What Are the Education Requirements to Become a Transpersonal Psychologist?

As with finding a transpersonal psychology job, finding the right schools that cater to aspiring transpersonal psychologists can also be difficult. Only a handful of traditional colleges and universities offer degree programs in transpersonal psychology . Many aspiring transpersonal psychologists start their careers with bachelor degrees in general psychology or counseling psychology.

Graduate degrees in transpersonal psychology are offered at some universities. Graduate degrees in counseling psychology with a strong spiritual background might also be acceptable for starting a career in transpersonal psychology, however.
