We are at the forefront of the global fight against cancer, bringing together millions of people who share our determination. But we need to go much further.

We’re looking for people who can work collaboratively and focus on what matters to help us to get to where we want to be.

Whether you’re a graduate, undergraduate, school leaver or looking for a career change, we have programmes that will help develop your skills at the UK’s leading cancer charity. Paid internships

Build experience and gain skills that will last a lifetime with our internships. We’re passionate about your personal development and we have opportunities across the charity throughout the year.

Length of programme: 12 weeks

For: anyone looking to gain work experience within the charity sector.

Student placements

Gain invaluable experience with our placements within the Centre for Drug Development or lab-based Cancer Research Horizons. We provide students with an interest in scientific or clinical research the unique opportunity to develop key skills in a world-class clinical research or lab environment. 

Length of programme:  12 months

For:   life sciences or chemistry students who want to gain experience in their placement year.

Accelerate emerging talent scheme

Develop your talents, strengths and experience with our emerging talent scheme, Accelerate. Gain valuable cross-organisational insight as you rotate through placements across the charity while earning a competitive salary in a supportive environment.

Length of programme: 2 years

For: high-potential individuals who want to develop their career in the charity sector. 

Apprenticeships

Learn and study for a qualification whilst working in a role that contributes to our mission of supporting people affected by cancer.

Length of programme: Various

For: anyone wanting to start their career in a new profession, or to progress their career in their current profession, whilst getting an insight into what it’s like working for one of the UK’s leading charities.

All our programmes offer a competitive salary and a range of benefits. Our Accelerate trainees earn £26,000 in your first year with an increase to £27,750 in your second year , whilst our Interns earn the London Living Wage .

Flexibility

We want our people to have time away from work to support their different commitments, needs and interests. We encourage a flexible working culture, including options such as home-working, reduced or flexi-hours, job shares, job-splits, compressed and core hours. We offer a high level of flexibility for the vast majority of our office-based roles, meaning that you’ll only be required to work from a specific location for 1 or 2 days a week on average.

• Salary – We regularly benchmark and review our salaries in line with our Remuneration Policy.

Research Fellow

University of Birmingham - Institute for Cancer and Genomic Sciences

A University of Birmingham funded post-doctoral research fellow position is available to work in the lab of Professor Jon Frampton in collaboration with Professor Amos Burke in the Institute for Cancer and Genomic Sciences at the University of Birmingham and with Professor Suzanne Turner (University of Cambridge). The postholder will contribute to the creation of knowledge by investigating genesis of fusion genes in paediatric cancer using NPM-ALK as an exemplar.  

Fusion genes and proteins are an important feature of childhood cancer but their genesis and function are poorly understood. Extending the work of the Turner lab in Cambridge, in long-standing collaboration with Amos Burke, this work will generate new understanding of fusion genes using NPM-ALK as a paradigm that has been extensively studied in the Turner lab. The Frampton lab has extensive experience and expertise in stem cell biology.

The finding of a variety of pre-malignant fusion genes in cord blood or in cytokine-stimulated CD34+ cells remains unexplained and no mechanism for their generation has been elaborated. Understanding of the processes involved in the generation of fusion genes will open potential avenues for new therapeutic approaches in childhood cancer.

All applicants should be proficient with basic tissue culture and molecular biology techniques and flow cytometry. Prior experience with metabolic analysis approaches is desirable but not required. Bioinformatics experience would be advantageous. Applicants should be able to demonstrate prior research success; for example, through publications/pre-prints, presentations at conferences and relevant academic prizes/travel awards.

• Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
• Contribute to writing bids for research funding
• Analyse and interpret data
• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
• Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc

Person Specification

• First degree in area of specialism  and  normally, a PhD (or one near to completion) relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
• High level analytical capability
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones

Oxford awarded £9m for the next generation of cancer experts

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has awarded £9m to the University of Oxford, to support the next generation of doctors and scientists to bring novel cancer treatments to patients.

CRUK is to award the funding over the next five years to train early-career clinician scientists - doctors who also carry out medical research - as part of its Clinical Academic Training Programme.

The Clinical Academic Training Programme will invest £58.7m at nine research centres, including the Cancer Research UK Oxford Centre .

Clinician scientists play an essential role in translating cancer research, helping to bridge the gap between scientific research carried out in laboratories and clinical research involving patients.

Working across both research settings, their contributions to new knowledge and its translation to clinical practice are critical for cancer research.

Professor Mark Middleton , academic lead for the clinical academic training programme in Oxford, said: 'We are delighted to gain further Cancer Research UK funding to help train tomorrow’s leading cancer researchers. We make the greatest progress when clinicians and scientists work together, and clinician scientists are the key to this approach.  Cancer Research UK’s funding means not only that our doctors and medical students can train as scientists, but also that our scientists will understand better how to apply their work to the benefit of patients. This will accelerate progress towards our goal of beating cancer together.'

Becoming a clinician scientist usually involves doctors taking time out of their medical training to undertake a PhD, before returning to train in their chosen specialisation, but many clinicians don’t come back to research after qualifying as consultants. This may be due to existing pressure on the healthcare system and lack of available funding.  

To tackle this issue, Cancer Research UK’s Clinical Academic Training Programme provides flexible training options alongside mentorship and networking opportunities to better support clinicians who want to get involved and stay in cancer research. 

Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UK’s Chief Executive, said: 'Clinician scientists have a very important role to play by bringing their knowledge and experience of treating people with cancer to scientific research.  We need all our doctors and scientists to be able to reach their full potential, no matter their background. That’s why we are continuing to provide flexible training options for early-career clinician scientists. After the success of the first five years of this programme, we want to encourage even more clinicians to get involved in cancer research to help us get closer to a world where everybody lives longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer.'
