For most people, Microsoft 's PowerPoint remains the original and best of all the presentation software platforms out there. While other companies have managed to catch up and offer rival products worthy of consideration, the fact is that PowerPoint's familiar interface and ubiquitous availability means it remains a favorite for the majority of people.

On the one hand, it's long been a staple of the hugely popular Microsoft Office suite, meaning that for most users this is going to be the first - and last - presentation software they are going to need to use.

Additionally, Microsoft has made PowerPoint, along with their other office products, available as free apps (with limited functionality) on both iOS and Android for mobile use, meaning it's even harder to avoid them. And this is before we even consider the inclusion of PowerPoint in Microsoft's cloud-based Microsoft 365.

It does everything necessary that you'd expect of presentation software, allowing you to add text and media to a series of slides, to accompany a talk and other presentations. There are easy-to-use templates included to help spice things up a little, but even a general user with little experience of it is likely to find themselves able to use PowerPoint without much trouble at all.

Overall, it's hard to go wrong with PowerPoint, and although Microsoft 365 has a nominal cost, the apps are free to use even if they do have more limited functionality.

For business users, there are a variety of handy tools available. By downloading Prezi , you can build and edit presentations with your colleagues in real-time, which is perfect for companies with teams based around the globe.

When you have created a presentation you’re happy with, you can present it live (in HD) and send a direct link to viewers. There are some analysis tools here, too – you can see who’s accessed your presentation, which parts of it, and for how long. The app is available for Mac and Windows devices.

Other presentation software to consider

Google Slides  is part of the Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) office platform intended as an online alternative to Microsoft Office. It may seem a little limited by comparison to PowerPoint, but as it's browser-based that means cross-platform compatibility. Additionally, it allows for collaborative work, and Google Slides really works well here. On top of the fact that it integrates with the rest of the Google Workspace apps, not least Google Drive, and you have a contender. 

Zoho Show  is another of the many, many tools and apps that Zoho has made available for business use. It also operates in the cloud so it's accessible to any device with a browser, and it also allows for collaborative work. You can also easily share the link for users to download, or provide a live presentation online. The updated version has a simpler and easier to use interface and comes with a free version and a paid-for one with expanded features.

Evernote  is normally thought of as just note-taking software, but it does provide the option to create a presentation you can share online or with an audience. In that regard, it's a little more limited than the other options in not being dedicated presentation software. However, as an easy and handy way to pull together a presentation quickly, it could serve as a backup or last-minute option, especially if Evernote is already being commonly used by you.

LibreOffice Impress  is part of the open-source suite offered as a free alternative to Microsoft Office, and comes with a powerful array of tools and editing options for your presentation, not least working with 3D images. It's supported by a large community, so it's easy to find an array of additional templates. If there is a limitation it's that it's software you download and install rather than web-based, but any presentations created should be easily portable to the web if needed.

Adobe Spark  does things a bit differently, as rather than just use images it's geared toward video as well. This makes for potentially more powerful multimedia presentations, especially as Adobe also has a big selection of photos and images available for its users. There is a free tier for core features but requires a subscription for custom branding, personalized themes, and support.

Slides  comes with a lot of features in an easy-to-use interface, and involves setting up presentations using drag and drop into an existing grid. It's also internet-based so there's no software to download, and it only requires a browser to use and access.

Google Drive allows all your presentations to live on the cloud, accessible to all marketing and sales teams, with unparalleled ease of use.

And there’s no need to worry about disruptions as all changes are saved as they happen, as long as you have an active internet connection. 

Additionally, anyone familiar with PowerPoint will be comfortable using Google’s iteration and likely be delighted by Google Drive and the slide library available. 

It’s also a lot simpler, so even those new to presentation-making will find it easy to navigate. 

However, some might find Google Slides too simple as it lacks the wealth of features available on PowerPoint.

Collaboration features are also important, making it easier to work on a presentation within a group and make comments for everyone to see.

Ease of use and user interface: Creating a presentation shouldn't feel cumbersome. When you start the app, it should be easy to create the first slide from a template, add more slides, fill in the text and images, and finish the entire project without having to learn complex features. A few years ago, we posted an article on the 21 apps that you can use to improve your talks, and today we are updating this list with 10 new, tried and tested apps that can help you master your speaking techniques.

1.   Voice Notes + Dictation

Some speakers find it easier to get into the flow and say what they are thinking, rather than write out what they would like to say. Timing can make or break a performance — as anyone who has sat in on a session that has overrun by 20 minutes knows.

These next apps will help you manage your timing and pacing. From establishing good speaking rhythms to countdown clocks, these apps will help you go with the flow and stay on time. 

A teleprompter “prompts” you with a visual text of your presentation. It allows you to read the text word-for-word ensuring consistent and accurate speech while maintaining the illusion of spontaneity. 

10. iPrompt Pro 

iPrompt Pro is one of the most intuitive teleprompting apps. It has a lot of options: from colour choices to scrolling speeds. It also has in-app text editing and timing changes, which is ideal for making changes as you are practicing. Although, there is some heavy advertising on the app (which can be quite tiresome) it is a low-cost, flexible app that has a lot to offer. 

11. Teleprompt +3

Teleprompt +3  is a simple and well-designed app that has incredible options that will help you practice your talk. The timer tools are very helpful for ensuring your session runs on time. Tools like the audio and video recorder, rich text editor, and intuitive speed control help you make your talk look and sound natural. This is one of the more expensive apps, but if you are looking for a tool that will go above and beyond your expectations for a teleprompter, this is it.  

12. Prompster

Prompster is smoothly-designed and provides readable text for all sorts of audible presentations, including talks, lectures, and sermons. You can create or import your documents, record your presentation (pro version), and share your talk with your audience via email. The onscreen controls allow you to set your text size and speed easily. If you are looking for a great tool to practice with, this is a tried-and-true app. It was voted iPhoneLife Magazine’s Best Public Speaking and Presentation App.

13. Teleprompter Pro Lite

Teleprompter Pro (both Lite and Premium) are very responsive and easy to use. You can type in or import your talk, then select your font, text size, and pace. The app continuously highlights where you are in the script so you won’t get lost. You can share your scripts on all of your devices: ideal for setting up your backup solutions. You can export prompt files using AirDrop or email. The Pro version also has a video recording function, which is perfect for watching your practices and making improvements.

Normal conversational speech ranges between approximately 120-200 words per minute, and listening to someone speak outside of this range can be difficult.

For example, an auctioneer can speak upwards of 400 words per minute, but listening to someone speak for 20 minutes in this range will befuddle and irritate any audience. On the other hand, speaking at less than 110 wpm will cause the audience to get bored and tune out.

Speech rate guidelines:

Slow: less than 110 wpm

Conversational: between 110 wpm and 160 wpm.

Fast: more than 160 wpm

Radio hosts and podcasters tend to speak at 150-160 wpm.

Auctioneers and commentators speak between 250 and 400 wpm.

Using a metronome can help you set your pace, but don’t forget to vary your pace — keeping it too even will sound monotonous, so play around with your pacing until it is in the right range while still sounding natural.

15. Pro Metronome

Pro Metronome was created for all kinds of stage performers, including musicians, to improve their rhythm. It is a fantastic app for public speakers who are working on their pacing. This app has a variety of ways to keep your tempo: from screen color changes to vibrations and sounds.

Timers and Clocks

It is so easy to lose track of how long you’ve been on stage. Being able to keep your talk on time is crucial. It keeps you from waffling on and ensures that the whole event runs in a timely manner.

Having a timer will help you keep your presentation flowing on time.

16. Amber Light Speech Timer

Modeled after a traffic light, this app helps you figure out where you are in your talk and how long you have left to get your point home. A green light displays for the introduction and body of your talk and it changes to amber when you are getting close to the end, and red when your time is up. The app is easy to use and allows you to custom-set your time frames. You can even change the alarm to a vibration if you are keeping it in your pocket onstage.

17. Toastmaster Timer

This app was originally designed for those who play the “Timer”, the individual in Toastmaster’s meetings who signals to the speaker when it is time to finish. It is a superb, free option for practicing. The timer is simple to use and has been designed specifically for speakers. It also uses the traffic light system but has slightly less customizable options than the Amber Light Speech Timer.

18. SpeakerClock

The SpeakerClock was inspired by the famous countdown clock that is used at TED conferences. The LED-style countdown clock is easy to see, even from a distance, so you are free to move around on stage. This app has a great design, and also includes a traffic-light-style feature that alerts you when it is time to get to your conclusion.

While the above apps are practical and skills-focused, they don’t address one of the greatest challenges when speaking — stage fright.

Where a little bit of pre-stage anxiety is normal, if it tips into too much, it can have a detrimental effect and potentially ruin your talk.

These next few apps will help you manage your stress levels and bring your heart-rate back down. Helping you get your message out clearly and confidently.

19. Confident Public Speaking Now

This app is part guided meditation and part stress-relief training. It offers meditation-style hypnosis sessions, like “Relax Completely” and “Total Relaxation in 10 minutes”. It also offers video interviews on what causes, and how to deal with, stress. It aims to teach you how to enjoy small doses of stress and gives you some tools to help you deal effectively with anxiety.

22. Insight Timer

You can even customize your meditation using the background sounds and meditation tool intervals, so you have something that is specific to your needs and fits into your pre-performance routine.

23. Headspace

While not specific to public speaking, Headspace is a great way to learn more about meditation and start regular practice. The free trial helps you relax for 10 minutes a day for 10 days with guided exercises and lessons, and includes a personalized progress page, reward system for continued practice, and can even hook you up with a buddy to help ensure you stick to the practice. All the while being fun, light, and engaging.  It is one of the top-rated apps on both iTunes and Android.

Calm offers a wide range of guided meditations to help you relax. Meditations of various lengths can help with building self-esteem and calming anxiety. There are also breathing exercises, unguided meditations, and more than 25 soothing sounds to help calm your nerves.

Q&A Apps

Slido has many of the same tools as the other apps mentioned in this section but has an interesting variation to the Q+A element for audience engagement. The audience can vote to discuss popular questions so that you can answer the ones that affect the most members. The questions can then be vetted by you on stage or by event organizers; saving a lot of time while giving your audience the feeling that they are connected to others who share the same thoughts.

31. Crowd Mics

Crowd Mics allows attendees to use their own phones as wireless microphones. Their questions can easily be amplified without the need to walk up to the microphone or have a runner try to access them. Your audience can also participate with text comments, questions, and live polling.   

There has been a slew of new apps developed that can help you give better presentations, as presentation skills become more important for professionals across all industries.

Proton just acquired one of Android's best note-taking apps

If you take a lot of notes on your phone, the app you use can play a critical role in your efficiency. That being said, there is hardly a one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on the note-taking app you use, you could be spending more time than you would like on keeping your notes organized and secure. Standard Notes is one option that has grown in popularity among avid note-takers for its end-to-end encryption. Now, one of the leaders in end-to-end encryption apps is bringing Standard Notes into the fold.

Proton, the Switzerland-based security-driven company, has announced the acquisition of Standard Notes in a blog post on its website. Given the shared interest in maintaining user privacy through end-to-end encryption, it only makes sense that the two are coming together. Proton CEO Andy Yen stated in the blog post that the app will be integrated into the company’s existing suite of products “in the coming months.”

How the acquisition will impact Standard Notes

According to the post, Standard Notes is already used by more than 300,000 people for note-taking on a regular basis — many of whom want to keep their notes secure on their devices. Proton says that, on its end, it intends to honor existing subscriptions to Standard Notes. Additionally, prices will not be immediately changed as a result of the acquisition, and Standard Notes will remain open-source as an app.

As Proton continues to expand its footprint, the company is doing more than just acquiring new apps to add to its existing suite — improving upon its own native tools and services has remained a priority. For instance, Proton rolled out desktop software for its Mail users at the end of 2023. The company also made sure to integrate a number of helpful features into the software, such as offline access to emails and attachments. You can also integrate third-party desktop email apps into the software for ease of use. Whether you value end-to-end encryption or you just want to try out new worksuite apps, Proton will give you much to consider, even if you don’t choose to subscribe.

Proton acquires Standard Notes to add another tool to its growing portfolio

Privacy startup Proton already offers an email app, a VPN tool, cloud storage, a password manager, and a calendar app. In April 2022, Proton acquired SimpleLogin, an open-source product that generates email aliases to protect inboxes from spam and phishing. Today, Proton acquired Standard Notes, advancing its already strong commitment to the open-source community.

Standard Notes is an open-source note-taking app, available on both mobile and desktop platforms, with a user base of over 300,000. Proton founder and CEO Andy Yen wrote in the official announcement, "Everything we create always takes longer and is more complex than it would be if we did it without focusing on privacy, and we generally have to do it with fewer resources. This also makes it a path that we walk alone as few other teams share our commitment to privacy and community and, therefore, understand the unique challenges we face day after day."

Privacy is a big deal to Proton. The end-to-end encryption of Standard Notes means that any sensitive data contained within ensures that information will only be accessible by the user. According to Yen, "This really makes Standard Notes complementary to the Proton ecosystem of services, and it is one that we have long used ourselves and are excited to introduce to the Proton community."

Yen makes a point of stating that Standard Notes will remain open-source, will continue to undergo independent audits, will continue to develop new features and updates, and that prices for the app/service will not change. Standard Notes has three tiers : Free, which includes 100MB of storage, offline access, and unlimited device sync; Productivity for $90 per year, which includes features like markdown, spreadsheets with advanced formulas, Daily Notebooks, and two-factor authentication; and Professional for $120 per year, which includes 100GB of cloud storage, sharing for up to five accounts, no file limit size, and more.

Although Yen didn't mention any specific plans, he did say that Proton hopes to find ways to make Standard Notes easily accessible to the Proton community. Whether that means the app will be rolled into Proton Mail remains to be seen. Given Yen's statement that Proton believes in "putting people ahead of profits," whatever the company does with Standard Notes should hopefully be good for all involved.

In the Standard Notes blog post , the company promised that "Standard Notes will continue to operate independently as a separate product while leveraging Proton's resources and experience to improve reliability and resilience for the long run."

Standard Notes is joining the Proton family.

Proton started out as a single service, the encrypted and secure Proton Mail, but has expanded since then to become an entire ecosystem of connected applications. There's now a password manager (Proton Pass), cloud storage service (Proton Drive), calendar app (Proton Calendar) and VPN (Proton VPN). Proton has just announced that it's buying out a popular notes app, potentially adding another useful service to that library.

Proton has just announced that it is buying out Standard Notes , an end-to-end encrypted note-taking app that is currently used by 300,000 people. The acquisition would see Standard Notes join the ecosystem of Proton apps. It's not clear whether the service will be seeing a rebrand to "Proton Notes" or something along the lines—Proton is guaranteeing that the service will remain "independent," but it also says that Standard Notes and Proton engineers will begin working together immediately, so make of that what you will.

This is the second time Proton has completed an acquisition. Back in 2022, the company bought SimpleLogin, which later became part of the infastructure for Proton Pass. This is the first time Proton buys an actual app to integrate it into its ecosystem, however. The company says that prices for the service will not be changing, and likewise, if you have an ongoing subscription to Notes, this will still be honored. Proton might choose to integrate Standard Notes into its current billing scheme, however, and into its premium plans, so we'll have to see how that looks once this merger is a bit more finalized. Both companies say that the merger is a no-brainer—after all, Standard Notes is already an app that has high standards of security, and supports end-to-end encryption.

For now, we don't know when, or if, the app will be changing a lot as it gets more integrated into the Proton ecosystem, but you should see no major changes at the moment. And as we said before, you should also see no changes to what you're paying or how it's billed. Things might turn around over the course of the coming months, however. Perhaps not branding-wise, but definitely in other ways at the very least.

The Clown Prince of Crime and Harley Quinn want you to know that what the world needs now is… love.

That’s the message of the first trailer for “ Joker: Folie à Deux ,” which sees Joaquin Phoenix reprise his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck (who later becomes Batman’s notorious foe) and conspire with Lady Gaga as the equally twisted Harley Quinn.

“I’m nobody. I haven’t done anything with my life like you have,” Harley Quinn, dressed down in sweats, tells Joker as she makes a finger-gun gesture and mimes shooting herself in the head.

The first film served as a moody origin story for the Joker, who is portrayed in this cinematic universe a reclusive, struggling stand-up comedian and part-time clown. In the sequel, he takes his act on the road and performs on all kinds of stages with Harley Quinn as his demented muse — and she’s wearing his signature makeup, smeared lipstick and all. This time around, though, Arthur Fleck doesn’t seem so lonely.

“I’ll tell you what’s changed,” Joker says in the trailer. “I’m not alone anymore — that’s what we should be talking about!”

The trailer ends with Harley at Arkham Asylum as she draws a happy face with red lipstick on the glass partition between her and Joker. “I want to see the real you,” she tells him.

Director Todd Phillips debuted the footage at CinemaCon , the annual convention for movie theater owners. Although the original 2019 “Joker” was billed as a “one-off,” Phillips said he and Phoenix always talked about making a sequel.

“We loved the character of Arthur too much, but we didn’t want to jinx the [original] movie,” Phillips said. “We cast Gaga because she’s magic.”

“I like to say it’s a movie where music is an essential element,” says Phillips. “It doesn’t veer too far from the first film. Arthur has music in him. He has a grace to him.”

Before introducing the trailer, Phillips thanked the room of theater owners for playing “Joker” on the big screen despite reports that the gruesome, blood-soaked film would inspire violence.

“About a month before the first ‘Joker’ came out, the narrative on the film really turned and there [were] these bizarre warnings about the movie,” he said. “It was amazing that exhibitors didn’t budge an inch, and when the movie came out, it did huge business. That attitude was a huge reason for our success.”

As Phillips alluded, “Joker” became a massive blockbuster with $1 billion at the global box office. It became the first R-rated film to pass the billion-dollar mark and earned 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture.

“Joker 2” will debut on the big screen on Oct. 4, 2024 — exactly five years after the first film. The original cost $62.5 million to produce, an unusually conservative budget for a comic book adaptation. Given its runaway financial success, the follow-up was granted a much more substantial $200 million price tag.

The sequel will screen in the Imax 70mm format. Although it was shot with Imax-certified lenses that modify digital cameras and not its film cameras, the company has created at least 10 film prints of “Joker: Folie à Deux” to play in select worldwide locations.
