What is an online will writing service?

Online will writing services allows those with simple financial affairs to write a legal will, quickly and simply, without the need for face-to-face meetings and expensive solicitors fees. It can offer greater peace of mind than a DIY will.

A number, such as Farewill use in-house legal experts to check over your will to ensure it’s written correctly and your wishes are clear.

Below, we cover in more detail what else the services offer, along with other online will writers that we rate highly, including Bequest, Bequeathed and Guardian Angel. Many services will also offer lasting power of attorney services.

Word of warning: an online will writer is not for everyone

An online will writing service is unlikely to be suitable if you have complicated affairs and inheritance tax issues, own your own business or you have remarried.

Online will writing services also aren’t authorised and regulated in England and Wales in the same way as solicitors.

Remember, once you have your written will, it will need to be signed and witnessed to make it legally binding.

What happens to debts when you die?

What happens to debts when you die?

Debts aren’t inherited but are paid off out of your estate when you die. This means that your loved ones are off the hook, unless they had a joint loan with you or provided a loan guarantee for you. If your estate doesn’t have sufficient funds to pay for the debts, then they are likely […]

If you die without leaving a will, your money and possessions won’t automatically go to those closest to you. The law will decide who gets what, not you, and this can cause distress for your loved ones. But a will correctly written and witnessed makes things clear-cut and conflict less likely. Things to think about

About completing your will, what’s the difference between mirror wills and a pair of wills.

Mirror wills are usually made by married couples or civil partners. Normally, the first to die leaves their estate to the survivor. When the survivor dies, the estate passes to the beneficiaries (who are the same people in both wills).

A pair of wills is two wills made by two people with the flexibility to make them similar to each other or completely different.

What type of gift can I make in my will?

  • Specific gifts – such as your jewellery, shares or property
  • Cash – known as ‘pecuniary’ gifts
  • Residuary gifts – what's left after all debts have been paid and all other legacies have been accounted for.

Who can witness my will?

In England & Wales, a will must be witnessed by two independent people over the age of 18. Your witnesses don’t need to know what’s in your will.

Witnesses cannot be:

  • beneficiaries in your will,
  • spouses or civil partners of beneficiaries in your will, or
  • anyone related to you

What can you do with an online will from Beyond?

Faqs on making an online will, can i make a will online without a solicitor.

Yes. As long as your wishes are simple, there’s no need to hire a solicitor to draw up your will. It’s perfectly legal to create your own will without the help of a legal professional. And we believe our service is the best way to create an online will in the UK.

Is it legal and safe to make an online will in the UK?

Our online will maker will create a valid and binding will, so long as you meet the usual requirements for any UK will (online or otherwise):

  • You’re aged 18+. Only adults can make a valid will.
  • You make the online will voluntarily. A will you’re forced to make doesn’t count.
  • You are ‘of sound mind’ when you make it. You need to be mentally capable of understanding and agreeing to the wishes stated in the will.
  • The will is written. Or printed off, in this case. Oral wills (where you just speak to someone about what you want to happen) aren’t considered valid in the UK.
  • The will is signed in front of two witnesses. These witnesses need to be 18 or over, and can’t be people who will benefit from the will in any way.
  • The will is signed by those two witnesses. To prove they were there, essentially.

What kind of will does your online will service make?

Our online will service generates a simple (also known as ‘basic’) will. This states what you would like to happen to your estate when you die, names an executor(s), and nominates guardians for your pets and children in the event of your death.

A complex will is recommended for very large and/or complicated estates, where you might want to set up trusts, lay out wishes that are complicated or contentious, or take certain steps to reduce inheritance tax. If you think you need a complex will, you can call us on 0800 054 9793 to get a quote.

What happens if I die without a will?

When you die without a will (also known as dying ‘intestate’), your estate goes to your ‘next of kin’ - this is the person legally considered to be your closest family member. This is usually your husband or wife, or (if you are unmarried) your children.

If you have no family members to inherit, the Crown will keep everything. If you make an online will with Beyond, you can ensure your partner is protected even if you’re not married and that specific items, pets and amounts are given to the right people.

What can I leave others in my online will?

Our online will writing service lets you pass on your:

  • Property or land
  • Specific belongings
  • Stocks and shares

It’s worth remembering that certain fees, debts and taxes may need to be paid before beneficiaries can inherit, so any exact monetary gifts may differ in the end.

What is a couple’s will?

Our couple’s will is actually two separate wills, one for the original will writer and one for their partner. It’s not a joint or mirror will: both of you will be able to make a personalised will that reflects your separate wishes, only matching each other where you agree.

Our couple’s will costs just £135, which is £45 less than making two individual wills, and hundreds less than a solicitor usually charges.

How does your couple’s will work?

Once you’ve completed your own will, you can choose to purchase a couple’s will. We’ll then email your partner and guide them through writing their will.

Your partner won’t be able to see your online will, but we will intelligently prefill some details (things like children and beneficiary contact information) based on what you entered to save them time.

Once your partner has completed their will and checked everything, they can download their will without having to make a payment.

Where should I store my will after I’ve signed it?

Once you’ve finished writing your will online, you need to print it off, sign it with two witnesses, then store it. You have a few options for this:

  • At home. This is free, but it’s important to keep your will somewhere secure and memorable. You don’t want to accidentally throw it away.
  • With us. If you choose our £10 a year subscription, we’ll store a physical copy of your will, and update it for you if any changes to the law make the wording outdated. We’ll also register your will with Certainty, the National Will Register, so your family can find your will easily when the time comes.
  • With the Probate Service. If you’re in England or Wales, you can store your will with the government’s Probate Service for £20.
  • With a legal professional. You can also keep your will with a solicitor or will writing service, usually for a fee. You should always ask the professional who writes your will to register it on Certainty.

Remember: It’s very important not to store your will in a bank safety deposit box. The bank might not be able to release the contents of the safety deposit box without a grant of probate, and a will is required to apply for a grant of probate.

Where will Beyond keep my will if I subscribe?

A hundred feet beneath the soil, in a fully managed, professionally converted WW2 bunker. We’re not kidding. It’s floodproof, fireproof, and proof against all kinds of other risks: the perfect place for sensitive documents.

Simply send your will by recorded delivery to Beyond Wills, 4 King Edwards Court, King Edwards Square, Sutton Coldfield, B73 6AP. We’ll confirm receipt and store your will in our secure facility.

How often do I need to update my online will?

The government recommends that you update your will every five years at least. It’s also important to change your will whenever there’s a significant change in your life, such as when:

  • A new child is born.
  • You get married, engaged, or divorced.
  • You buy, inherit, or move into a new house.
  • One of the people mentioned in your original will dies, or becomes less suitable (such as the executor dying, or guardians moving away or splitting up).
  • You have something new that you’d like to pass on.
  • You change your mind about who should inherit what (it happens).

Our optional £10 a year subscription service lets you log in and update your will using your saved details any time. Think of it as having an online will kit at your fingertips for whenever life turns a corner.

Can you see what I’ve written in my will?

What can you see.

When it comes to your personal data, we can only see your name and your email address, which we use to contact you when your will’s ready to be downloaded.

Some other general stats (namely the number of people who’ve made and downloaded a will, and the total amount left by all our users to specific charities) are tracked, but the data is anonymised - stripped of any identifying information. This means we don’t know who the people involved are: it’s just a way to understand how we’re doing.

What is an executor?

The executor of your will is responsible for making sure that your wishes are carried out and that your estate is settled properly after you die. The executor of your online will can be anyone aged 18 or over. They don’t have to be a solicitor, and they can be a beneficiary as well as an executor. You can also have multiple executors. People often choose their partner and/or their children. The important thing is to choose someone you trust. This role can, however, be a significant amount of work and stress for a loved one, so we offer a fixed-fee hassle-free executor service, which you can choose during the will-writing process.

What is a guardian?

When you choose a guardian for your children in your online will, you’re choosing who will look after them if both you and their other parent die before they turn 18.

A guardian for a pet is a similar thing, but with pets (who can’t come of age, and don’t have other ‘parents’ - at least, officially speaking), you are choosing a guardian for as long as your pet survives.

Guardians can also be executors and beneficiaries.

What is a beneficiary?

Your beneficiaries are the people you choose to inherit some part of your estate when creating your will. Anyone - apart from the two witnesses who sign your will - can be a beneficiary.

What’s included in my online will purchase?

  • A legally binding will. Our will language is approved by STEP-qualified solicitors. Our smart interactive tool takes your answers and uses them to craft a personalised will that, once signed and witnessed, will be legally binding.
  • Every will checked. Our in-house legal experts double check every will. If we spot anything amiss in your will, we’ll let you know within 7 days.
  • Registered with the National Will Register. We register your will with the National Will Register. This service, which usually costs £30, offers a way for your family to find your will easily after your death, even if you don’t tell them where it is now.
  • Live support. Stuck mid-way through your will? We’re here to answer all your questions. Just call or message our team for a helping hand.

What does Beyond’s online will subscription service include?

  • Update your will whenever you like. Just moved house, or welcomed a new addition to the family? With our optional £10 a year will storage subscription, you can save the details of your will online and log in and update it any time. You can cancel any time from your account.
  • Safe storage, forever. We’ll keep a physical copy of your will safe so that you don’t have to worry about losing or damaging it as the years go by.
  • Updates to the law. We keep a sharp eye on any legislation that might affect wills. If you’re a subscriber, we’ll get in touch to let you know if any new law will have an impact on your will, and what to do about it.

Making a will

Your will lets you decide what happens to your money, property and possessions after your death.

If you make a will you can also make sure you do not pay more Inheritance Tax than you need to.

There are different rules for Scotland and different rules for Northern Ireland .

You can write your will yourself, but you should get advice if your will is not straightforward .

You need to get your will formally witnessed and signed to make it legally valid .

If you want to update your will, you need to make an official alteration (called a ‘codicil’) or make a new will.

If you die without a will, the law decides who gets what.

Will Writing Services

A Will is a legal document that lets you decide what happens to your money, property, and possessions (your ‘estate’) after your death. It allows you to clearly set out your wishes and decide who’s responsible (executor) for dealing with your estate. It also sets out any procedures the executor may need to follow. With effective planning, a Will can also make sure that your loved ones are provided for in the most tax-efficient way.

If you don’t make a Will, the law will divide your estate according to what’s known as the rules of intestacy. These rules are very fixed and may not reflect what you’d like to happen to your wealth, or what’s most tax efficient.

Choosing The Right Will Service For You

Our Will services are easy to use and can be tailored to your needs. We can help you decide what type of service would suit you best.

For simpler and more straightforward circumstances, our  online  or postal service could be perfect for you. However, we know that life can sometimes be more complex, involving scenarios that are unique to you and your family. This means your Will may need to reflect this, with a more tailored and bespoke solution to give you and your loved ones the confidence and security you need.

Understanding more about your personal circumstances, such as the complexity and value of your estate, will help to inform the best option for you.

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the statements below, it may be that a more tailored and bespoke solution is right for you:

  • The value of your estate is over £1m
  • You own a business
  • You or your spouse have children from a previous marriage
  • You have made any large gifts (over £3,000 in any tax year) to individuals or Trusts
  • You were born outside of the UK or have assets outside of the UK
  • Any of your intended beneficiaries need their inheritance protected
  • You are a beneficiary of a Trust.

To help you to make the right decision for your needs, please contact our team. They’ll listen to your wishes and share options for your next steps

Our friendly team of experts can help you write a Will to:

  • Make sure your money and property go to the people you want them to go to
  • Minimise inheritance tax
  • Name trusted people as executors* to sort out your affairs when you die
  • Appoint legal guardians for any children who are still minors
  • Reflect changes in your life circumstances, such as marriage or divorce, or the birth of children or grandchildren
  • Ensure gifts of personal items are left to the right people
  • Set up trusts and make gifts to charity.

*We act as executors for many clients and have administered thousands of estates.

Sharia-Compliant Islamic Wills

A Sharia-compliant Islamic Will (Wasiyyah) can be suitable for Muslims who’d like their assets to pass in accordance with the principles of Sharia law. Our solicitors are experts in Sharia law compliance and can help you provide for your family in a way that follows your faith.

Wills Assured Service

As part of our online and postal Will Service, we also offer our Wills Assured Service. Once finalised, we can store your Will for you. If you appoint Irwin Mitchell Trustees Limited as the executor of your estate, you’ll also able to make free amendments as part of our Wills Assured Service .

This package of additional benefits is designed to make life simpler for you and your loved ones knowing:

  • Your Will is kept safe and will be easy to access after your death
  • You can update it at any time if your circumstances change
  • All your important digital information is in one place.

Reviewing Or Changing Your Existing Will (Adding A Codicil)

An up-to-date Will is essential for making sure your wishes reflect your current situation and includes everyone you wish.

It’s good practice to recheck your Will every five years, especially to make sure it considers any changes in tax regulations that might affect you.

We suggest reviewing your Will following major life changes, for example if:

  • You get married or divorced
  • Any of your beneficiaries get married or die
  • New children or grandchildren are born, and you want them to inherit
  • There’s a significant change in your financial circumstances
  • You come into any inheritance – this could change the value of your estate and the Inheritance Tax payable.

With our Wills Assured Service , standard updates are free. That means you don’t have to worry about paying extra fees to keep your Will fit for purpose.

Deciding whether to make changes to your existing Will (adding a codicil) or to write a new one will depend on the scale and number of changes you want to make. A codicil is an addition to a Will that can amend or revoke parts of it. This can be suitable if there are just one or two small changes.

If you need any large revisions, it’s often better to write a new Will to avoid confusion. We can explore these options with you and advise on what’s best for you and your loved ones.

Your Will belongs to you, and we’ll happily store it for you and provide you with a copy when you need one. If at any stage you’d like your original Will returned to you, just let us know and we’ll tell you what we need to send it to you. When you die, your executors will need the original Will. We can explain the terms of the Will to them and help them deal with the probate process .

If you’ve been left out of a Will, haven’t been left as much as you expected, or think the Will is wrong in some way, you might be able to contest it.

Contesting a Will can be challenging and feel daunting. With the help of our Will Disputes Team, we can support and guide you through the process. We can also help if you are an executor defending against a Will dispute .

Lasting Power Of Attorney

At the same time as thinking about your Will, it makes sense to also consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) . These are useful if you’re worried about losing the ability to manage your own affairs in the future. We can discuss the options with you and help you appoint the right person to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental capacity.

If you want to find out more, call the team today on 0808 303 8151. If you’d rather, you can use our online form and we’ll call you back as soon as possible.

How do i make a will.

Making a Will is simple. There’s a few ways to do it:

  • Online – the questionnaire only takes ten minutes to complete
  • By post – download the form  and send it back to us
  • By phone – call and speak to us
  • In person – come and speak to us in one of our national offices

We recommend our online or postal service if your estate is relatively straightforward. If you have more complex requirements, or you’d like to talk about tax-planning or asset protection options such as setting up a trust, we advise speaking to us on the phone or coming in to see one of our experts.

Call us today for an initial consultation on 0370 1500 100 – or use our online enquiry form  and we’ll give you a call back.

How Much Does It Cost?

This depends on your requirements and the complexity of your estate. Standard Wills offered through our online service cost:

  • £175 (including VAT) for a single Will
  • £260 (including VAT) for ‘mirror’ Wills (for couples - if your needs are very similar).

If your estate is fairly straightforward we recommend this option. Get started with our online wills service  today.

You can also use our postal service by downloading the form and sending it in to us. The fees for this service are:

  • £195 (including VAT) for a single Will
  • £295 (including VAT) for ‘mirror’ Wills.

For both these services there may be additional costs if you need more complex advice. We would let you know about these before drafting your Will.

More complex and high value estates require more dedicated legal advice tailored to your needs, to ensure you and your loved ones are provided for in the most tax-efficient way .

For this service we recommend contacting the team to arrange an appointment with one of our experts who can let you know the options available to you.

What Should I Think About When Making My Will?

Everyone’s circumstances are different, but some of the things to consider when making a Will are:

  • The value of your estate – inheritance tax (IHT) is generally due on anything over the £325,000 threshold (£650,000 for married couples and civil partners) once mortgage and other debts are deducted
  • A new IHT allowance of £125,000 may apply if you own a property and leave some of your estate to relatives like children and grandchildren.
  • How you own your assets – if you co-own property with your spouse, the type of tenancy you have will affect whether or not they can continue to live there after your death
  • Who you want to leave your assets to (i.e. your beneficiaries)
  • Who you would like to be the  executors of your estate
  • Whether some assets would be best placed in a trust for asset protection purposes.

These are important decisions to make and you should seek legal advice to make sure your estate is structured in the best way for you and your beneficiaries.

Read through our Wills Checklist  to see if you’ve got everything covered.

Can You Store My Will?

Yes we can. Our specialist storage facility ensures your Will is kept secure from the risk of theft, fire or water damage. It also means it’s easily accessed after your death, giving you peace of mind and making things easier for your loved ones.

This service is free for our standard, bespoke and Wills Assured  clients.

Making a will online

online-will-writing-1400-x-450.jpg

06 November 2023

Online will writing services allow you to create a legally binding document that protects your family’s future – all from the comfort of your screen. As with the traditional route of writing a will in front of your solicitor.  You still need to include the following information:

  • Investments
  • Details of who should have these assets after you die
  • Any other wishes – such as the type of funeral you want.

Do I need a will?

Online or offline, there’s no doubt that making a will is vitally important. For all of us, the reality is that one day we’ll no longer be around, but writing a will ensures you can keep some control over how your money, property and possessions are distributed. For example, you can also write in your will that you are planning to leave a gift to a charity . You can also reduce your Inheritance Tax liability, settle any family disputes, and make arrangements for your children’s care. If you don’t have a will at the end of your life, you will have died ‘intestate’, which means your estate will be divided according to strictly defined legal rules.

The benefits of making a will online

Online will writing services are an increasingly attractive way to manage your estate when you’re no longer around. Here are some of the benefits:

  • A low-cost option, but with professional, legal oversight
  • Widely available and user-friendly
  • Saves time compared to visiting a high-street solicitor.

But of course, there is a world of difference between online will writing done professionally, and a cheap service without the same standards. As a minimum, you should be able to do the following:

  • Ensure you can ask questions directly, rather than just relying on a fully automated service
  • Pay a one-off fee, rather than ongoing costs
  • Get storage for your original will, or advice on storage.

How to write a will online

Here is our quick guide to will writing online in three simple steps:

  • While there is more than one way to make a will online, you can generally expect to answer questions about your circumstances - such as whether you’re single or married, and where your assets are located - from the comfort of your computer chair.
  • Following this, a team of legal experts will typically examine your application, recommend any changes and do a final review.
  • Once approved, you’ll still need to print and sign your legally-binding document in the presence of two witnesses.

Its important to note that different laws apply in different regions, so it's important your will is valid where you live.

MakeAWillOnline.png

Are online wills legal?

Yes, making a will online is perfectly legal. Just like writing a will the traditional way, you will need to meet certain requirements so that the document is valid in a court of law. That means you will need to be 18 and over, be of ‘sound mind’, make the will in writing and the will should be made voluntarily by you. You should sign the document in the presence of two witnesses who are also 18 and over.

One condition is that the witnesses (or their spouses, civil or registered partners) must not be beneficiaries of the will.

Other ways to write a will

Of course, making a will online is not the only option. There are two other ways you can write a will:

  • Solicitors – the tried-and-tested route. The advantage of using a solicitor is you're protected if something goes wrong. This is because solicitors are regulated. You should remember that a solicitor will charge for their services in drawing up or checking a will which could prove to be more expensive than the other will writing alternatives.
  • A DIY will – As long as it was properly signed and witnessed by two adult independent witnesses who are present at the time you sign your will, it should be legally binding. But that doesn't mean it's a good idea. Using the wrong wording could mean that your instructions aren't followed, or even that your will isn't valid.

This will help make sure those chosen beneficiaries receive the cash sum from the plan quickly when you die, without the need for lengthy legal processes.

5. What if I need to speak to someone about my Will?

We have a team of support staff available on both phone and email. You can reach them on: 0800 061 4934 or email [email protected]

6. Why do I need a Will?

If you wish to leave your estate to a loved one, or perhaps a specific gift to a close friend. Your will tells people who you want to benefit from your assets when you die. If you don’t have a Will and an executor cannot be agreed by your family, then the government will decide how your assets are distributed.

7. Is an online Will legally binding?

To make your Will legally binding you need to make sure it’s signed alongside two witnesses. It’s really important that everybody is present, at the same time, when the will is signed. This is so that, if your will is ever contested in the future, your witnesses can testify that they watched you sign your will.

8. How do I get people to witness my will when I’m self-isolating?

If you are self-isolating but need people to witness and sign your will, it’s incredibly important you don’t put it off. To get around this, you could arrange for both of your witnesses to watch through a closed window as you sign your will. It’s important that they are present at the same time for this.

Worth also noting that in light of the challenges around COVID, the government have responded by introducing new legislation that will allow wills to be witnessed remotely using video conferencing tools such as Zoom, WhatsApp and Facetime. These new measures have been backdated to January 2020, and will extend to January 2022 after which it will be reviewed. The government have been clear that this is a temporary change in the rules and should only be used as a last resort where it is not possible for a will to be signed in any other way.

9. How do you choose who inherits your estate?

Most married couples, civil partners and long-term partners choose to leave the majority of their residuary estate to their partner. This is usually due to shared responsibilities like looking after children or paying a mortgage where your partner relies on financial support.

If you’re a parent but don’t have a partner, you may wish to divide your estate between your children. Anything left to children under 18 will usually be held by your executors until they reach adulthood.

10. How much inheritance tax will I have to pay?

The inheritance tax rate for 2019/20 is £325,000, this is also known as the nil rate band. If your estate is worth more than £325,000, you will usually have to pay 40% on everything over the nil rate band. However, if you’re married or in a civil partnership and your partner is domiciled in the UK, anything you leave to your partner will be tax free, regardless of the size of your estate.

In this scenario, your partner would also inherit 100% of your £325,000 tax allowance, giving them a total allowance of £650,000. Your partner could then leave behind an estate up to the value of £650,000 without having to pay any inheritance tax.

With octopus legacy, other uk providers.

Between £150 – £300

Where there’s a will...

...there’s an octopus saying there’s a more interesting way to write it.

Your will could be a template. Or you could make it your own.

Why not share more than money? Share notes, playlists and memories.

When people think of wills, they think about things like wealth, assets, property.

We see the start of conversation., what can you share so people feel close to you, what can you leave to make things easier, how can you shape a legacy that connects you to the people you love - now and after you’re gone..

It is for the people you leave behind. We know the difference a good plan makes and what it's like when there isn't one. In 2016 our founder Sam's Mum died suddenly. It was tough enough, but the frustration of legal fees and mess that came with it was overwhelming.

That's why we started Octopus Legacy, so no one else has to go through the same thing.

These people are talking about death and creating their legacy. Join the conversation. Read what they have to say.

Talking about death can be scary, but so are all the other important things in life. it’s time to ask the questions. start the conversation., death comes with all sorts of questions. existential, emotional, logistical. whatever questions you have we can stretch apart together..

Writing a will was expensive, which was another reason to put it off. The cost of doing a simple will with a lawyer or solicitor ranges from £150-£300. If you need a complex will it can cost between £300-£1000. Wills are living documents and the government recommends we edit them every 5 years, or when something big happens in our lives. But traditionally this has always been costly, making it hard to do. Traditional will writers either charge you for a new will or for a codicil (edit), which can cost up to £100+.

We wanted to do it differently. Our online will costs £90, and that includes our on-hand expert support. Life changes and wills should too. That’s why we’ve made editing your online will easy. We offer free unlimited changes for the first year and only £10 per year after that.

Yes an online will is 100% legal once the will has been printed and signed by you and two witnesses. Your will comes with easy-to-follow instructions on how to sign it properly.

  • Unlimited updates. You can update and amend your online will at any time, no need for a codicil.
  • Physical storage (optional). We can store your online will for you if you do not want to do this yourself.

Dying without a legal will in place is called dying intestate.

The average cost of dying intestate is roughly £9,700 and leaves your loved ones in the lurch with decisions to make and a tonne of paperwork to do.

A will isn’t really yours - you never use it - it’s a gift that you’re giving the people you care most about to save them having to sort everything from scratch.

Most likely you will need to update your online will. It is a living document that will evolve as your life and situation changes. The advantage of our online will service is that you can update it any time. This is free for the first year and only £10 per year after that. Just let us know what amends you’d like to make and we’ll send you the updated version to sign with two witnesses. Simple as that.

If you used a more traditional will writing service this is more complicated. You’ll either have to write your will from scratch and incur the cost, or make an amendment, called a codicil, which usually costs £100+. A codicil is basically a legally binding addition / modification to your will.

Online mirror wills are simply clone wills for couples. More popular and relevant now is just a simple will for both partners. Getting your online will as a couple in this way means that they can be updated more easily and also reflect any personal wishes one may have. We even offer a special deal for couples wanting to write their wills online. Our couples online will package only costs £135, instead of £90 for each will, saving you £45.

  • A legally binding will. Our online will tool guides you through the process of writing your will step-by-step, our experts use your answers to create a will that will be legally binding once signed and witnessed.
  • Your online will is checked. Our in-house expert reads over it and checks that everything is correct. We'll return your will to you within 7 business days. If we have any questions we'll contact you by email.
  • Live on-hand support. Our team of experts are here to support when you need us.

There are two types of will: simple and complex. The kind of will you need depends on your situation.

A simple will is our most popular online will; which lets you name executors, nominate guardians for children and pets, and divide out your estate as you wish.

Our online will is designed to let you make your will with ease. You can do it from the comfort of your own home in just 15 minutes and save money on getting a solicitor to simply fill in a online will template that works for you.

If you think you require a complex will, then you can speak to our wills team for free at 020 4525 3605. This may be the case if you have assets overseas or a particularly large estate.

Our system breaks down this process step-by-step so you know what to include in your online will. We ask you about yourself and your family, your assets and how you would like them to be divided, and the people who you want to execute your online will.

If you have children under the age of 18 you can add guardians in your online will. Appointing a guardian for your children in your will means that they will be looked after in case the worst happens.

We also ask several optional questions about any funeral wishes you may have and any specific gifts or messages you would like to leave.

We believe that every adult in the country should sort their online will, long before it's necessary. But, it becomes even more important when you have children, own sizable assets, or have a large family.

There are both financial and non-financial reasons why sorting your online will is important.

Financially, dying without your will in place is called dying intestate and may cost your family thousands after you have passed away.

Financials aside, having your online will in place can reduce family disagreements, ensure your assets go where you want them to, help plan your funeral, and allocate specific gifts.

You can print your online will at home. No printer, no worries. We’ve got you covered. We offer a print and post service for just £9.99 for exactly that reason. You’ll be given this option at the end of the process.

Yes. Lots of couples choose to write their wills together. We make this even easier with our couples package (online will kit). Save £45 when you write your wills at the same time. Just click here and the option to write a will with your partner will appear in the first few steps.

On average it takes 15 minutes. Yes really, that’s it.

In order to be legally binding, wills written online will still need to be printed, hand-signed and the signature will need to be witnessed by two people.

Life changes. Wills should too. Unlike lots of other will providers, one of the advantages of our online will service is that you can edit it any time.

A will is your chance to have a say in what happen when you die.

It is a legal binding document where you can lay out:

  • What you want to happen to any money, property or specific items
  • Who you want to look after your pets, or children (under the age of 18) - if you have them.
  • Who you want to be in charge of sorting this whole process out.
  • You’re a homeowner
  • You’re a parent or legal guardian
  • If you have a partner
  • If you’ve recently got married
  • If you’ve recently got divorced

Unsure? Take this free 1 minute quiz here to find out if a will is important for you.

Yes you can.

We’ve even created a special section in our online will tool where you can lay out your funeral wishes if you want to.

It's not compulsory, but it can be a huge relief to the people you leave behind. It saves them worrying if they've done you proud.

Knowing they’ve celebrated you in the way you would have wanted can be a huge comfort in a tough time.

Absolutely. We offer a range of services from online wills to over the phone support.

Just call our team on 020 4525 3605.

The team will talk you through the process, provide advice and draft your will based on your wishes.

Making a online will or over the phone is easy and cost-efficient, and most importantly it makes life easier for the people you love when they need it the most.

As long as the will is signed in the correct manner, your telephone will is valid.

You can write your own will on the back of a napkin if you want… As long as it’s signed with two witnesses it will be legally binding.

However, there are ways to write a will that make sure your wishes are crystal clear and less likely to be up for debate or confusion. It’s easy to make mistakes that can prevent your will from becoming legally binding, such as formalities issues, problems with witnesses or legal misunderstandings.

An online will can be a happy medium - a way of sorting your will quickly, easily and without breaking the bank, but still getting the expert support you need to have confidence in it for years to come.

Online will providers provide testators with the tools to write their own wills. These services do not include execution of the will documentation; it is the testator’s responsibility to print it off and arrange for its execution in accordance with the applicable laws.

It depends on the nature of the relationship with your partner upon your death. If you have written a legally valid online will in place at the time of your death, your estate will pass according to the terms outlined within the document.

If you die without a will, your estate will pass according to the rules of intestacy. If you married or in a civil partnership with your partner, they will either get all of your personal property, the first £270,000 of your estate and half of the remaining estate, or all of your personal property and the entirety of your estate with interest from the date of your death, based on whether you have living descendants or not respectively. If you are not married to or in a civil partnership with your partner, they cannot inherit under the rules of intestacy and can only apply to a court for a financial provision.

Likewise, if you are divorced or your civil partnership has been legally ended, your partner cannot inherit under the rules of intestacy.

However, if you are separated from your partner without having divorced or legally separated, they can still inherit under intestacy, following the same procedural rules as married partners or those within a civil partnership.

The original versions of legal documents, such as wills are the only legally binding versions. Scans, photocopies and computer records are not legally valid because they don’t have the original signatures on them. That is why most wills will usually be found at people’s homes, but they can also be stored by professionals or the Probate Service.

Wills written online, as any other kind of will can be registered at the National Will Register. Original wills, stored outside of the house, may be overlooked because executors and beneficiaries are unaware of their existence or location. In consequence, any kind of will, including wills written online, can be tracked through the National Will Register in case the original cannot be easily found elsewhere.

For a online will to be legally valid and binding, it must be signed by and in the presence of two independent witnesses over the age of 18, in addition to the testator themselves being an adult with mental capacity making the will voluntarily.

During the Coronavirus Pandemic, the government amended section 9 of the Wills Act 1837, the legislation dealing with making wills, to allow you to witness a will via a video-call or facetime. This applies to wills made on or after 31 January 2020 and provisionally lasts until 31 January 2024.

It couldn’t be easier. To update or amend your will you just need to login to your account and use the navigation bar to go to My Will. From there you can update and amend each element and section as and when you need.

Our legal team will then review these changes and either email or print and post the amended PDF version of your will for you to sign in front of witnesses.

There are two main ways to get an online will for free.

Through your trade union or employer – Check whether yours has any partnership with an online will writing service.

Through charities you support – Partnerships between charities and online will writers to provide wills to their supporters. In return, you might consider leaving said charity a legacy.

To write a legally binding will you need to be:

  • A legal adult
  • Have testamentary capacity
  • Making your will voluntarily

Once signed, the legally enforceable parts of your will, such as how your estate is divided, who your executors are and your beneficiaries all become legally binding.

There are three main types of gifts you can include in your online will:

  • Residuary Gift: A percentage share of your estate You can leave certain percentages of your estate to friends, family or charities.
  • Pecuniary Gift: A set amount of money You can also leave a fixed cash gift for example £1,000 to a friend, family member or charity. These gifts come out of your estate first, and then whatever is left over is divided according to your wishes.
  • Specific Gift: A particular item If you have a specific item that you want to give someone you can do this too, such as a car or jewellery, or a work of art.

If you don’t have an online will in place then your estate will be divided up according to the laws of intestacy rather than your wishes.

This involves a lot of paperwork, added costs (around £9,700 on average) and a bit of stress. So if you don’t want to leave the people you love in the lurch it’s worth taking the time to write a will.

If you’re in a civil partnership when you die your will will be dealt with in the same way as a married couple.

This means that if you have a will then the wishes laid out in your online will will be followed.

If you don’t have a will in place then your estate will be divided up according to the rules of intestacy. When you have a civil partner this means that your surviving partner will inherit all of the personal property that belonged to you and the following depending on whether you have any surviving descendents…

If you have surviving descendents e.g. children then your partner will get:

  • The first £270,000 of your estate (everything else you owned) and half of the remaining estate.
  • Your surviving descendants e.g. children will get the other half of the remaining estate.

f you don’t have any surviving descendents then your partner will get everything.

If you have a legally valid will in place, your will will determine what happens to your estate, gifts and any children under 18 years old.

However, if you don’t have a will in place it’s a little more complicated.

If you have a partner, but you aren’t married your estate will be divided up according to the rules of intestacy. Intestacy rules only provide for married partners or blood relatives.

This could mean that your partner gets nothing if you’re not married. They can always apply to the court for financial provisions to contest this.

If you don’t have a partner when you die, your estate will be divided up according to the rules of intestacy. Intestacy rules provide for any of your blood relatives or other close relatives if you don’t have children or grandchildren.

Mirror Wills are two wills, for two different people, usually a married couple, that have virtually identical wishes.

E.g they might both want to leave the entirety of their estate to their respective partner, with their children as back up beneficiaries.

It is a great way to communicate joint wishes simply.

However, whilst both wills are mirrored, they are still separate legal documents.

So if any major changes occur, both people need to update their online wills to ensure they are still matching.

An executor is the person named in a will who is responsible for sorting out the estate of the person who has died.

You can choose them in our online will under the section: Executors.

A will is a legal document which outlines what happens to your worldly possessions when you die. In order for a online will to be legally binding and to follow the rule of wills, it must tick a few legal boxes.

  • The person writing the online will must be an adult and of sound mind
  • The will must be signed in the presence of and by two independent witnesses
  • Over 18 years old
  • Have a clear view of the person writing the will signing it If all of these boxes are ticked then the rule of the will has been followed.

Traditionally, updating your will can be costly and complicated. Most solicitors charge fees to amend your will, otherwise known as a 'codicil' and some even make you start from scratch each time.

The government recommends you update your will every 5 years - making this process expensive and stressful.

But life changes and wills should too.

That’s why when we built our online will service we made it extra easy to amend and update over time. We offer free unlimited changes for the first year, and a £10 per year subscription that allows you to update your online will any time after that.

In order for a will to be legally valid, it has to be witnessed and signed by two independent adults. They are there to check that the will writer knows what's happening and isn't being pressured into signing.

A witness must be over 18 years old.

They can't be:

  • Related to the will writer
  • A beneficiary of the will
  • Married or in a partnership with any beneficiaries

Most people choose neighbours, friends or colleagues as their witness. You can also choose a professional such as a solicitor or GP.

Firstly, if your children are under 18, it is important to write a will so that you can have a say in who would look after them if you and any co-parents or guardians were to die. If you and any co-parent or guardian were to die the court will appoint guardians, which might not reflect your wishes.

Secondly, it allows you to provide for them, either directly if the child is over the 18, or through a trust, for children under 18.

Lastly, sorting your Will allows you to give particular items you own to your children, ranging from practical gifts like a car to sentimental ones.

If you’re a homeowner your will is the place you can say who you’d like to inherit it - and the same applies to any money, savings or possession that you have.

If you own the property on a ‘joint tenant’ basis, your share of the property will automatically pass to the other co-owner on your death. However, if you own the property on a ‘tenant in common’ basis, your share in the property will pass using the rules of intestacy if you do not have a Will, meaning it would pass to your closest living relative according to government rules, which might not reflect your wishes.

Deciding what happens to a house you’ve worked hard for is usually the kind of thing most people want to have a say in.

Writing your will allows you to do just that.

February 3, 2024 Israel-Hamas war

By Chris Lau, Nadeen Ebrahim, Andrew Raine , Adrienne Vogt , Matt Meyer and Tori B. Powell , CNN

Our live coverage of Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza has moved here.

US strikes anti-ship cruise missile in Yemen

From CNN's Jalen Beckford

US forces struck an additional Houthi anti-ship cruise missile in Yemen early Sunday local time, according to US Central Command.

The strike was conducted in "self defense" against a Houthi cruise missile "prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea" at 4 a.m. local time on Sunday, US Central Command said in a statement.

US forces determined the cruise missile presented an "imminent threat" to US Navy ships and other vessels in the region.

The strike is a part of the US military's effort to deter the Houthis from further disrupting the global shipping lanes in the Red Sea.

Israel says it has hit multiple Hezbollah targets in Syria and Lebanon since Gaza war began

From CNN's Michael Rios, Lauren Izso and Charbel Mallo

Israel’s military has attacked more than 3,400 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and more than 50 in Syria since the war in Gaza broke out 120 days ago, Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari said.

At a press briefing Saturday, Hagari said Israel has been trying to stop Hezbollah's “supply chain of ammunition and missiles,” which he alleged were being smuggled from Iran to Syria and then to Lebanon.

Hagari also said the Israeli military has deployed three divisions along the Lebanese border since October 7 -- instead of the usual single division to try to thwart Hezbollah's capabilities and protect people in northern Israel.

For the last four months, along with the war in Gaza, we have been waging a very intense battle on the northern front, aimed at reshaping the security reality so that the residents of the north can return to their homes safely,” Hagari said, adding: "So far we have attacked more than 150 terrorist units and eliminated more than 200 terrorists and commanders."

Hezbollah on Saturday said it had launched at least eight attacks on Israeli positions.

The IDF acknowledged that “a number of launches” were identified crossing from Lebanon to northern Israel, but said no injuries were reported and that it struck the sources of the fire.

UK says strikes on Houthis in Yemen are about protecting innocent lives

From CNN’s Jomana Karadsheh and Morayo Ogunbayo

In this image provided by the UK Ministry of Defense, RAF Typhoon FRG4s are prepared to conduct strikes against Houthi military targets in Yemen on Saturday.

UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said Saturday that strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen are about protection.

“The Houthis’ attacks on commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea are illegal and unacceptable and it is our duty to protect innocent lives and preserve freedom of navigation,” Shapps said in a statement after the United Kingdom and United States conducted the strikes against the Iranian-backed rebel group.

Shapps also said   the strikes were "not an escalation," adding that they have "already successfully targeted launchers and storage sites involved in Houthi attacks" on ships in the Red Sea.

In a separate   joint statement with the US-led coalition, the UK said that Houthi attacks constituted “an international challenge” and issued a warning to Houthi leadership.

“We will not hesitate to continue to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world's most critical waterways in the face of continued threats,” the coalition said.

The Houthi rebels have said their strikes on Red Sea ships are in response to Israel's military campaign against Hamas in Gaza.

"We will meet escalation with escalation," Houthi senior official says in response to strikes in Yemen

From CNN's Eyad Kourdi

Mohammed Al Bukhaiti, a top member of the Houthi Political Council, said the group will continue its military operations until the siege on Gaza is lifted and vowed to respond to the latest US and UK strikes in Yemen.

In the group's first reaction to the latest wave of attacks, he warned: "We will meet escalation with escalation."

Al Bukhaiti wrote on X:

"The US-British coalition’s bombing of a number of Yemeni provinces will not change our position, and we affirm that our military operations against Israel will continue until the crimes of genocide in Gaza are stopped and the siege on its residents is lifted, no matter the sacrifices it costs us."    "Our war is moral, and if we had not intervened to support the oppressed in Gaza, humanity would not have existed among humans. The American-British aggression against Yemen will not go unanswered, and we will meet escalation with escalation," he said.

US strikes make it difficult to reach a political solution in the region, Iran tells UN

From CNN's Artemis Mostaghian, Jennifer Z. Deaton, and Hande Atay Alam

Recent strikes by the US military in the Middle East make it difficult to reach a political solution in the region, Iran's foreign minister told the United Nations' special envoy for Yemen on Saturday, according to Iran's state-run news agency.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the comments prior to US officials confirming the latest strikes Saturday on Houthi targets. The attacks follow multiple joint US-UK airstrikes on the Iran-backed rebel group in Yemen last month.

During their meeting in Tehran, Amir-Abdollahian told Special Envoy Hans Grundberg that the US strikes and its decision to designate the Houthis as a terrorist organization have "complicated the situation and made it more difficult to reach a political solution," the state news agency, IRNA, reported.

Amir-Abdollahian also called US strikes "the continuation of Washington’s wrong and failed approach to resolve issues by force and through militarism," IRNA reported.

Remember: The US also conducted major airstrikes on 85 targets across seven locations in Iraq and Syria on Friday in response to a drone strike in Jordan that killed three American soldiers.

The strikes in Yemen are distinct from the attacks in Iraq and Syria: The former is a response to ongoing Houthi attacks on international shipping and US warships in the Red Sea, while the latter is a retaliation for the deadly attack on US troops. But both target Iranian-backed groups in the Middle East.

Biden approved Saturday strikes earlier this week, officials say

From CNN’s Priscilla Alvarez

A US-led coalition conducts airstrikes in Yemen on Saturday.

US President Joe Biden gave the green light for Saturday's strikes earlier in the week, according to two senior administration officials.

The strikes are separate from the retaliatory measures the United States took on Friday in Syria and Iraq, and are related to ongoing actions to defend US ships and international commercial vessels in the Red Sea, according to one administration official.

They mark the third set of strikes as part of a coalition that includes the United States, the UK, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark and New Zealand.

The senior administration official stressed that the US does not want escalation, and that the strikes are in direct response to the actions by the Iranian-backed Houthis.

The strikes occurred as Biden visited his campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. The president is currently en route to Los Angeles, where he's expected to participate in campaign fundraisers.

What to know about the Houthis

From CNN's Christian Edwards

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels say their strikes on ships in the  Red Sea as in response to Israel's military campaign in Gaza. There are fears that the attacks could escalate Israel’s war against Hamas into a wider regional conflict.

On Saturday, the US and UK struck over 30 Houthi targets across Yemen, while the US also struck six Houthi anti-ship cruise missiles that the group was prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea, according to US officials.

This is what you should know about the rebel group:

Civil war: The Houthi movement, also known as Ansarallah (Supporters of God), is one side of the Yemeni civil war that has raged for nearly a decade. Yemen’s civil war began in 2014, when Houthi forces stormed the capital Sanaa and toppled the internationally recognized and Saudi-backed government, triggering a civil war. The war has sparked one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, leaving hundreds of thousands dead and pushing parts of the country into famine.

Backed by Iran: The Houthis are backed by Iran, which began increasing its aid to the group in 2014 as the civil war escalated and as its rivalry with Saudi Arabia intensified. Iran has provided the group with weapons and technology for, among other things, sea mines, ballistic and cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones), according to a 2021  report  from the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Shipping attacks: While the Houthis may not be able to pose a serious threat to Israel, their technology can wreak havoc in the Red Sea. There are fears that the Houthi drone and missile attacks against commercial vessels, which have occurred  almost daily since December 9 , could cause an even greater shock to the world economy. The Houthi strikes could be intended to inflict economic pain on Israel’s allies in the hope they will pressure it to cease its bombardment of Gaza. Championing the Palestinian cause could also be an attempt to gain legitimacy at home and in the region as they seek to control northern Yemen. It could also give them an upper hand against their Arab adversaries, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who they accuse of being lackeys of the US and Israel.

US defense secretary says strikes send "clear message to the Houthis" to end attacks on shipping routes

From CNN’s Haley Britzky

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin speaks during a press conference at the Pentagon in Washington, DC, on February 1.

The additional strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen send a clear message to the Iran-backed militia, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Saturday.

Austin issued the following statement:

"These strikes are intended to further disrupt and degrade the capabilities of the Iranian-backed Houthi militia to conduct their reckless and destabilizing attacks against U.S. and international vessels lawfully transiting the Red Sea. Coalition forces targeted 13 locations associated with the Houthis' deeply buried weapons storage facilities, missile systems and launchers, air defense systems, and radars. "This collective action sends a clear message to the Houthis that they will continue to bear further consequences if they do not end their illegal attacks on international shipping and naval vessels."

Coalition statement: In a separate statement, the US, UK, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and New Zealand said.

"These precision strikes are intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities that the Houthis use to threaten global trade, and the lives of innocent mariners, and are in response to a series of illegal, dangerous, and destabilizing Houthi actions since previous coalition strikes on January 11 and 22, 2024, including the January 27 attack which struck and set ablaze the Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker M/V Marlin Luanda." It added: "Our aim remains to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea but let us reiterate our warning to Houthi leadership: we will not hesitate to continue to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world's most critical waterways in the face of continued threats."
