'Kutty Story' movie review: The good and the bad co-exist in this latest anthology

How dearly I have missed the directorial work of Nalan Kumarasamy. Is there another filmmaker who’s so at ease generating laugh-out-loud humour from complex, sensitive situations, and who is able to achieve this without ever trivialising the central issues of the film? The man is a rare talent.

In his segment in Kutty Story titled Aadal, Paadal, the song and dance is not of the literal variety. It's metaphorical and occurs between a husband and wife (played wonderfully by Vijay Sethupathi and Aditi Balan), whose years of togetherness have dented the 'fun' in their relationship. This is the word Sethupathi’s character uses to explain away his transgression.

Despite the emotional weight of this subject, Nalan proceeds to draw all types of humour from the film. There are jokes of the dialogue variety, like when Aditi's character responds to her husband saying, " Un kaiya kaalaa nenachikaren ", with " Adhaan kaal irukke ".

There's humour in the body language, especially of Vijay Sethupathi’s: watch him adjust his shirt as though he were a posterboy for model husband behaviour and then quietly, mischievously ask a woman what she's wearing.

The best of all is the situational humour that arises from his wife playing mind games on him. Even the choice of a name 'Kamakshi Sundaram' results in a joke. The success of this film is how while it’s making you laugh, it makes all these quiet, sharp points about the double standards in relationships, about how a husband and wife react differently to the same problem, about how women are viewed as property. To put it simply, our cinema could do with more Nalan.

Much like Nalan’s film, the others too can be said to deal with the troubles that romantic love runs into. Gautham Menon’s film, Edhirpaara Muththam, is a film I enjoyed too, and is one that talks about the thin line that sometimes differentiates a platonic and a romantic relationship.

The word 'platonic', in fact, is referenced several times in his film, once by the friend of Aadhi (Gautham Menon), Prabhakar (Robo Shankar), who quips, " Blood theriyum, tonic theriyum, adhenna platonic? "

I enjoyed his presence in this film, even if his humour doesn’t always land. Importantly, the presence of such a comedian seems to help localise the scenes in a way that benefits the contrasting sensibilities of a filmmaker like Gautham Menon. It reminded me of how useful a comedian like Vivek was in Minnale, performing a similar ‘grounding’ role.

There’s a bit of homage being paid to the enduring Ilaiyaaraja classic, 'Valayosai'. For one, there’s a scene of the couple in a bus, and with Priya (Amala Paul who I really liked here) humming this song. There’s a small callback to the visual of this song, when the younger Aadhi (Vinoth Kishan) asks Priya to cover her eyes with a dupatta, and then proceeds to kiss her. The circumstances, of course, are different in this film.

Priya and Aadhi are friends in a platonic relationship, something Prabhakar scoffs at and doesn't think can exist. Aadhi, however, genuinely believes this. Without giving away too much, let me just say that despite Priya's argument at the end, the film does seem to inadvertently support Prabhakar's stand. Both Aadhi and I will continue to disagree with Prabhakar - and the film - about this.

This is a space that Gautham comfortably thrives in. Watch him capture those little awkward glances between Aadhi and Priya, the small shifts in their body language as they get comfortable in each other’s presence after a long separation. Watch the evident camaraderie between Aadhi and friends at the dinner table, as they sit exchanging old stories.

Watch Aadhi sportingly take in - and almost savour - all the good-natured teasing from his friends. Watch that quiet, vulnerable moment - the moment that results in the title of this film - as Priya stutters between embracing her pent-up feelings and letting them slide, in the face of Aadhi's lack of romantic interest.

This is a film whose real value lies in how it shows that should Gautham Menon, who has dabbled a lot in a certain type of romance over the years, choose to explore variations in this space, there’s plenty of room in which to express himself.

Venkat Prabhu’s short film, Logham, has the fascinating premise of gamers falling in love inside a make-believe universe. Spielberg's Ready Player One comes to mind. There are some fascinating stretches in this film, as Venkat looks to explore how the gaming world can create possibilities that are not possible for many, given the limitations of the real world.

However, this is a film that could have benefitted perhaps with a lead actor who's able to radiate more conviction and charisma. Some of the dialogue-writing is a bit bland too. When Adam falls in love, he goes, " I love you di. I miss you di. En di enna torture panra?! "

It reeks of cliché. That pun on the woman lead’s name, Eve, when the man asks her to show her some ' Eve erakkam ' is inspired, but there needed to be so much more of that in this film.

The events that occur within the video game universe in this film too are disappointingly generic. The missions they go through, the coins they collect, the treasures they store… all of these elements needed to be united by a more gripping purpose, one that aligns with their real-world objectives. Perhaps if the gaming universe were more imaginative, the shifts between the real and the gaming world may have seemed more interesting.

The story too ends at a point that raises more questions than it provides answers, but that’s the nature of short films, I suppose. The real problem is that for a film with such a fun and yet, deep premise, the film offers neither the satisfying depth of an emotional film nor the rousing fun of a video-game film.

The towering disappointment of this anthology, one that threatens to bring down the other films with it, is director Vijay's Avanum Naanum. The film is a sneaky appeal against abortion, and this, of course, isn't new to the filmmaker who brought us a foetus-ghost (in Sai Pallavi's Diya) meant to create feelings of guilt in women who have ever considered or will consider abortions.

In Avanum Naanum, Megha Akash once again (after Oru Pakka Kathai) plays a young woman forced to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.  Here, she plays a silly girl who realises she could be pregnant, only after a friend notes that the count of her sanitary pads hasn't gone down in sometime. The situation of Megha's character in this film screams for an abortion.

The pregnancy is unplanned; her boyfriend is nowhere to be seen; she is ill-prepared to run her life, let alone manage another; she hasn’t completed her education; her parents cannot provide a support system, and she says they may kill themselves if they knew about this… And yet, writer-director Vijay conspires to write an accidental death into this manipulative story, so the girl can feel emotionally pressurised into having the child.

The film also propagates the lie that abortion is illegal, and that the gynecologist who helps could potentially get suspended (note that the pregnancy in this film is barely eight weeks old). It's also a film that feels contrived from start to finish.

Be it the caricature of a hotel receptionist, or the horrible prank played on the heroine in a hotel room, or the decision-making of her heroine's friend… I could go on and on. Thankfully, the film doesn’t, as it’s a short film. Such are the benefits of an anthology.

Kutty Story Movie Review: Vijay Sethupathi shines in this light-hearted anthology

Four top Tamil filmmakers - Gautham Vasudev Menon, Vijay, Venkat Prabhu and Nalan Kumarasamy have come together to offer insight into love, hope and relationships with their unique storylines in an anthology titled Kutty Story. Though it’s refreshing to watch short films that don’t entirely bank on star power, only two of the four stories create any impact and give us something to take home.

Gautham Menon’s Edhirpaara Mutham and Nalan Kumarasamy’s Aadal Paadal hits the right note and stays true to the genre. Though Nalan is the youngest when compared to other filmmakers of this anthology, his short-filmmaking finesse stands tall.

Edhirpaara Mutham Director: Gautham Menon Cast: Gautham Menon, Amala Paul, Vinoth Krishnan and Robo Shankar Edhirpara Mutham revolves around the lives of two engineering students - Aadhi (Vinoth Krishnan) and Mrinalini (Amala Paul), who are best friends. Though they get along well and spend most of the time together, Aadhi and Mrinalini believe that there is an invisible line between love and friendship and they shouldn’t cross it for any reason. Aadhi insists the same to his friends and says that a man and woman can just be friends no matter what. However, the events that unfold in the later stage of his life destroy his theory and make him understand that there is love between the two. But is it too late now? Edhirpaara Mutham is exactly what we can expect from a Gautham Menon film and he has stayed true to his genre. Be it a 20-minute short film or a 120-minute drama, Gautham has always managed to bring the audience into his world where there are only two souls with a kind of divine love between them. Their relationship is often complicated as well as matured. Gautham Menon, in Edhirpara Mutham, plays the elder version of Vinoth Krishnan. The role suits him perfectly and he has pulled it off with ease.

Avanum Naanum Director: Vijay Cast: Megha Akash, Amitash Pradhan, Ayra, Bujji Babu Avanum Naanum comes with a strong premise that could easily evoke emotions among the viewers. However, the weak screenplay and irrelevant theme makes it an average watch. Preethi (Megha Akash), a final-year student, discovers that she is three months pregnant and informs her boyfriend Vikram (Amitash Pradhan) about the same. Within a few minutes, unfortunate circumstances put Vikram in non-reachable mode forcing Preethi to seek an abortion. Does destiny help her live with her loved one or put her in trouble, that's the rest of the story.

Avanum Nanum has nothing new to offer. It tries packing in too many subjects, leaving little time to explore them. But Megha Akash’s performance is laudable and makes for a decent watch.

Logam Director: Venkat Prabhu Cast: Varun, Sakshi Agarwal, Sangeetha Logam, directed by Venkat Prabhu, is distinctly different from the other feel-good films. It revolves around the life of a gamer Varun (Adam), who tries to find the whereabouts of his girlfriend Eve (Sangeetha), whom he met in a video game. The film begins with an interview of Varun, one of the top gamers in the city and the first to complete the game called Logam. He credits his girlfriend for all the success and says that he dedicates the victory to her. But who is this girlfriend and what does she do? Does this girl exist only in the game or is she real and in love with him as well? Though the premise is interesting, the characters in the film don't create any impact. The twist in the latter half of the film is something unexpected and seems to justify the errors made in the first few scenes. But overall, except for the animation portions, Venkat Prabhu could have concentrated more on cinematography and presentation. The terrace scene where Varun explains to his friends about the game is particularly amateurish and underwhelming. Aadal Paadal Director Nalan Kumarasamy Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Balan Nalan Kumarasamy’s Aadal Paadal is indeed the boldest attempt in this anthology. Apart from dealing with the complications involved in extra-marital affairs, the film also talks about the chauvinistic attitude of men that women mostly become a victim of. With some quirky scenes and an interesting screenplay, Aadal Paadal is easily the best of the lot of this anthology.

A happily married couple goes through a bad phase in life after knowing that one of them is cheating on the other. The writing is typical of Nalan’s films - characters who are on the grey side of the law, twists where you least expect them, and a bizarre plot. Wife (Aditi Balan) impersonates her husband’s paramour to confirm that he is indeed having an affair.

Vijay Sethupathi’s performance is brilliant and makes us forget the flaws that come with this genre. The scene where he regrets his mistake without letting go of his male ego is something to watch. Aditi Balan, who made a fantastic debut in Tamil cinema with Aruvi, has lived the character. The conflicts explained are all very relatable to the middle-class audiences while Nalan’s writing of romance stands a class apart.

Kutty Story movie review: Anthology with quirky ideas but problematic execution

Kutty story is a cocktail of love stories with some quirky twists. except for nalan’s refreshing short on male insecurity in a marriage, other shorts come across as promising but never work wholesomely..

Kutty Story

Vinoth and Amala Paul in Gautham Vasudev Menon's short film.

Director : Gautham Menon, Vijay, Venkat Prabhu and Nalan Kumaraswamy

Cast : Amala Paul, Gautham Menon, Vinoth Kishan, Megha Akash, Amitash Pradhan, Sakshi Aggarwal, Sangeetha, Aditi Balan and Vijay Sethupathi

It suddenly feels like the season of anthologies. After Putham Pudhu Kaalai and Paava Kadhaigal, Kutty Story is the latest anthology to come out of Tamil cinema. It’s also the first Tamil anthology film featuring four directors to release in cinemas. Headlined by some really popular Tamil filmmakers such as Gautham Menon, Vijay, Venkat Prabhu and Nalan Kumaraswamy, Kutty Story is a cocktail of love stories with some quirky twists. Except for Nalan’s refreshing short on male insecurity in a marriage, other shorts come across as promising but never work wholesomely.

Gautham Menon’s short talks about platonic relationships. Throughout the course of the short, we hear dialogues like a man and a woman can never be friends. The story is centered on Adhi (Vinoth) and Mrinalini (Amala Paul) who’ve been friends for the longest time but they’ve shared one intimate moment many years ago. Adhi continues to believe that he and Mrinalini have always maintained a platonic relationship and have been well aware of the invisible line that differentiates friendship and love. However, many years later, both of them realize they had feelings for each other but it’s too late to do anything about it.

If there’s one Tamil filmmaker who has championed the urban romance space, it is undoubtedly Gautham Menon. His mature take on platonic relationship – which is rarely discussed at length in Tamil cinema – deserves praise and he extracts beautiful performances from his lead cast, especially from Amala Paul. But Gautham’s effort to commercialize the story with the help of Robo Shankar’s comedy is probably why the short is problematic. Gautham preempts audiences’ reaction and conveys it through the scenes featuring Robo Shankar, who jokes about how a boy can kiss a girl on her cheek when they’re having an intimate moment and not take it all the way. These scenes take away all the sensibility out of Gautham’s intent to talk maturely about platonic relationships and it gets flat-out annoying after a point.

A still from Nalan Kumarswamy's short featuring Vijay Sethupathi as an insecure husband.

Vijay’s short about unplanned pregnancy could’ve been handled in a better way. To some extent the story takes a mature stand on the topic but the ending is a major disappointment. It leaves one confused about the filmmaker’s stand on pregnancy and abortion. The short feature Amitash and Megha Akash in the lead and it’s the latter who impresses here.

Venkat Prabhu’s short is about two avid gamers who fall in love without seeing each other. It’s easily the most creative idea of the lot, and it makes for an interesting watch. It features extensive footage of gaming animation, and we see two characters bonding over a game. The exciting premise doesn’t translate into an engaging story with characters worth rooting. The twist in the climax is slightly underwhelming, too.

Nalan Kumarswamy’s short about a couple during the pandemic is easily the best segment of the anthology. It talks about male insecurity when a husband, who is confronted by his wife for cheating on her, learns that she has cheated on him many years ago. The short talks about the element of sanctity in a marriage and how it applies to both husband and the wife. Nalan takes a very bold approach but his treatment is light-hearted, as it leaves one chuckling away right till the end. The Nalan – Vijay Sethupathi combination clicks once again and it’s refreshing to see the filmmaker spring back in action after a long hiatus.

Kutty Story is an anthology comprising of 4 films, each 30 mins long written and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, Vijay, Venkat Prabhu, and Nalan Kumarasamy respectively and produced by Ishari K Ganesh under the banner Vels Film International. The film has a plethora of top actors associated with it, like Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Balan, Amala Paul, Varun, Megha Akash and more.

The anthology starts off with Gautham Menon's film. It has Gautham Menon himself playing the lead while Amala Paul plays the female lead. Vinoth Kishen and Robo Shankar play crucial supporting roles in this romantic drama that explores the thin line between platonic and intimate relationships. GVM plays the role of Aadhi, an engineering graduate who is close friends with Mrinalini (Amala Paul), or a platonic relationship with her as Aadhi calls it. How this relationship progresses and where it leads them forms the rest of the plot.

This untitled film operates in the GVM zone for most of its duration. There are plenty of voice overs, There is the 'Kaapu' in the hero's hand, the bullet bike is back and so are the stylish shots. On one side this film is a treat for GVM fans, and on the other side the plot is extremely predictable. But this film is more about the mood than the story, and on that scale, the film does work well. With strong technical aspects as well, the film not only works individually, but also sets tone for the whole anthology.

The next film is by director Vijay, starring Amitash and Megha Akash in the lead roles. Among the four films, this has a completely predictable story and that results in a less engaging screenplay. The film deals with the sensitive issue of abortion. With around 30 mins of runtime in hand, almost 90% of the film is drenched in melodrama. Vijay is a director known for handling drama in his films very well, but here he misses a trick or two.

The cinematography and music worked well. With the politics of the topic chosen also being debatable, this could have been a lot better compared to other films.

The third film is directed by Venkat Prabhu who surprises us with a genre that's nowhere close to his usual zone. As someone who can deliver a solid commercial entertainer on any given day, Venkat Prabhu must be lauded for this effort. While the climax of this one is also very predictable like the previous two films of the anthology, the rest of the film is refreshingly cool. Varun plays the role of Adam, a top gamer and he falls in love with his co-player Eve (played by Sangeetha). Whether he gets to meet her in person and they unite forms the plot.

Premgi Amaren's music is one of the biggest strengths of this film. It not just complements the proceedings well, but is also highly experimental. Imagine this, the protagonist is knocked down in the video game, and then when he rises up, an Amman themed Kolavai background music plays and it does satisfy us. With the flaws and positives weighing out equally, this passes off as a middling film that's enjoyable in parts.

There's a popular adage that says "Save your best for the last". It was indeed a wise decision to place Nalan Kumarasamy's "Aadalum Paadalum" at the end, which is a typical Dhoni sixer. Starring Aditi Balan and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles, the film sets up its own universe, has plenty of solid twists that aren't placed for the sake of it, has brilliant, quirky music and beautiful visuals.

Aadalum Paadalum is a film that deals with the dynamics of a couple where the husband is having an extramarital affair.  Aditi Balan and Vijay Sethupathi ace their roles really well, and Aditi proves why she's easily one of the most natural actors around with her organic acting.

Music director Edwin Louis' background separately gives you a high, mainly because of the unique instruments and sounds used. The placement of Kaber Vasuki's independent song 'Nee Vekkam Kori' deserves high appreciation. Most importantly, you don't feel time passing by, and the engagement is high (The short duration helps this as well). Nalan's film easily ends up as the best of the lot. The only thing you can predict about this short is that it's going to be unpredictable in Nalan's own way.

Overall, the anthology is evenly balanced out with a good start from Gautham Menon and a outstanding finish from Nalan Kumarasamy. Venkat Prabhu and Vijay's films could have been dealt with better, had they been more nuanced. But both of them are indeed watchable at least once. Except for a few places all 4 films are technically strong and that makes them all look far better.

Kutty Story movie review: Vijay Sethupathi, Gautham Menon's film is an engaging take on love, relationships

Language: Tamil

Nalan Kumaraswamy is in top form. Venkat Prabhu makes an earnest attempt. Gautham Menon has an interesting idea and too pleased with himself for it. Vijay has no idea!

Kutty Story is an anthology of four stories of urban, middle class, heterosexual romance. Within the constraints of that, it is an interesting mix of shorts. The most problematic one is Vijay’s Avanum Naanum . It is the story of a college-going woman, Preethi, who gets pregnant. Soon enough, the story becomes about abortion. In Vijay’s world, abortion is illegal (thank god, in the real world, it is not — at least not in India since the 1970s). Yet, in the film, doctors who perform the allegedly “illegal” abortions make women fill out forms titled “abortion form” because that’s how illegal activities function; complete with signed and stamped paperwork!

In telling the story of a woman who is going through multiple physical and emotional crises, Vijay chooses to give her no voice or agency. She has other people who make all the decisions for her, first a friend, and then a sister, and so on. Small mercies are in the fact that these are not men. In Avanum Naanum , the women deliberately carry forward the patriarchy.

Gautham Menon’s Edhirpaara Muttham is written and filmed like yet another slice of Menon’s own life. It doesn’t help that he plays the male protagonist himself. He has an interesting, even if ancient, idea: Where is the line between friendship and romance in a relationship between a man and a woman?

He explores this question through the story of Aadhi, played by himself, and Mrinalini, an angelic Amala Paul (like all of Gautham Menon’s heroines, of course). Aadhi insists that he hasn’t crossed the line. Even as his friends refuse to believe from his repeated retellings of a meeting that’s filled with sexual tension. Robo Shankar, the disbelieving friend, is an excellent counterpoint to Aadhi’s starry-eyed romance.

Yet, the writing and execution are awkward. Everyone keeps reiterating how his present wife doesn’t mind hearing about his past romances. Conversations about past love aren’t really introspective, and don’t seem to have any taken help from hindsight. The ending goes for the melancholy of unrequited love rather than for understanding of human relationships. With a little more critical engagement, Gautham Menon could have made the film a layered anti-thesis to the long-held Tamil film notion that first love is the only love. This one stops just short.

Venkat Prabhu makes a love story, which itself is a fresh outing for him. His film Lokham is surprisingly well-considered. Adam, the video game alias of the male protagonist, meets Eve, the female protagonist, and they journey together. In fact, Adam is a happy-go-lucky chap meandering in the world, who finds protection and companionship with Eve.

Telling the love story through the video game makes the metaphors easier to build, but more importantly, stark in impact. It offers layers that would have been utterly difficult without the video game. For instance, when we meet Eve she’s already way ahead of Adam in her journey — a subtle reference to her age that comes beautifully together later. It’s the kind of film that we might see pleasant connections in second and third viewings.

Premgi Amaren does a fun job of the music, giving the video game some thara local background music, when the hero comes to his own. The pivotal scene where Adam confesses of love is clumsy, though. It sounds almost as if Gautham Menon walked past the set while shooting and decided to write the dialogue for that scene, and Venkat Prabhu hastily translated it. On the whole, it’s an interesting attempt by Venkat Prabhu.

The best of them all is Nalan Kumaraswamy’s Aadal Padal . The film shines on all counts. The writing is clever with near-perfect rhythm, packing so much so well in 30 minutes. The dialogue is sharp, the silences sharper. Vijay Sethupathy is top-notch as the garden variety “asshole” — misogynist, philanderer, and manipulative. He’s in the zone, his performance among the best of his recent outings (I count Master too here). The film hardly gives 2-3 minutes to build his character, but it tells us so much, even while saying so little.

Aditi Balan as his wife is terrific; it’s a shame we don’t see more of her in Tamil cinema. Cinematographer N Shanmuga Sundaramadds to the temperament of the film. Even as much of the film is set on the terrace of a single house, the dynamism of the shots makes sure that it never feels repetitive. Edwin Louis’ quirky music accentuates conflicts without cueing up emotions for the audience.

The success of Nalan Kumaraswamy’s film is in the sensitive and observant portrayal of a present-day marriage. He has no hero and heroine — just a flawed man and his wife, who doesn’t care for his nonsense. It doesn’t justify, in fact, it doesn’t even resolve the conflict. It reminds us of what we come to accept.

Nalan’s film alone is worth a visit to the cinemas to watch this anthology. It would have fared much better if not for Vijay’s fiasco. But, even with it, Kutty Story is an interesting take on love, romance, and relationships.

Kutty Story Movie Review

Kutty Story Movie Cast & Crew

This is the season for anthologies and yet another one is all set for release tomorrow (February 12)! Love is a subject that has often been explored in movies from different angles and Kutty Story is an anthology, produced by Vels Film International and having segments directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, Vijay, Venkat Prabhu and Nalan Kumarasamy! Each of these accomplished directors have proven themselves over their stellar career and now, they present their take on relationships, especially between a man and a woman with a power-packed star cast to boot! Ethirpara Mutham (Gautham Vasudev Menon) Adhi (Vinoth Kishan) and Mrinalini (Amala Paul) are collegemates and best friends. One day, Adhi invites Mrinalini for lunch and cooks for her. At the end of the day, he unexpectedly kisses her initiating totally different feelings in the two. Years down the line, Mrinalini is married and settled down abroad and Adhi (Gautham Menon), reminisces about this incident to his friends and wife and states that his relationship with Mrinalini has always remained platonic. However, Adhi's friend Prabhakar (Robo Shankar) disagrees with him. Due to a sudden turn of events, Mrinalini happens to meet Adhi again. How does this meeting affect Adhi and Mrinalini? What happens next, forms the rest of Ethirpara Mutham!

GVM has handled his segment in his typical style and has a classy setting. Vinoth Kishan as the younger Adhi, has done a wonderful job and Amala Paul is rock solid as ever. Robo Shankar's presence is enjoyable and the class(y)ic GVM treatment is visible throughout! Karthik's music and Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography are a big plus to this segment! Avanum Naanum (Vijay) Preethi (Megha Akash) and Vikram (Amitash Pradhan) are lovers in college. When Preethi learns that she is pregnant, she immediately calls Vikram and informs him about it. However, he immediately switches off his phone and is not reachable in any way! Preethi's friend Shruthi (Ayra), asks her to abort the pregnancy and move on with life. When Preethi goes to the hospital to get aborted, she has a shock in store which makes her take a strong decision. What Preethi does and what happens next, forms the rest of Avanum Naanum! There is nothing new or different in this segment and director Vijay seems to have chosen a safe bet.

However, his handling of the general perception towards all men, needs a special mention. Megha Akash essays her role very well and Ayra is an actor look out for. Amitash Pradhan has played his part well. Arvind Krishna's cinematography and Antony's editing bolster this segment while Madhu R's music also good. Logam (Venkat Prabhu) Director Venkat Prabhu has taken up the concept of love that arises without seeing a person, in person! A gamer (Varun) develops feelings for a fellow player he has met only on games. When he tries to trace & identify her in real life, she keeps evading him. There seems to be an air of mystery around the girl, which Varun tries to see beyond! Who is the girl and why is she avoiding Varun? Logam will provide the answers! The star cast for this segment includes Varun, Sakshi Agarwal and Sangeetha, who have all given good performances.

The animation for the game sequences is top-notch and sets high standards. However, despite taking off on a great note, some clichés seem to have letdown the segment. Some performances seem contrived and do not live up to the mark. The trademark pull and pace of a Venkat Prabhu movie seems missing. Aadal Paadal (Nalan Kumarasamy) A normal couple's (Vijay Sethupathi & Aditi Balan) life takes a disastrous turn when the wife finds her husband cheating on her. The wife then confronts the guilty husband and states that she too has had an affair and cheated on him. What happens to their marriage and how the couple handle these unpleasant surprises in their life, forms the rest of Aadal Paadal! The super successful duo of Nalan Kumarasamy and Vijay Sethupathi (Soodhu Kavvum & Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum), is reunited in this segment!

Easily the best segment of Kutty Story, Aadal Paadal stands out in a number of ways! Vijay Sethupathi, yet again proves what a powerful performer he is, with a dazzling display of a variety of emotions and Aditi Balan matches him in all scenes! Kudos to Nalan Kumarasamy for exploring a touchy subject and extracting such wonderful performances and the flawless technicality throughout! Edwin Louis's BGM adds to the director's vision and N Shanmuga Sundaram's camera work needs to be lauded for the lovely visuals. Sreekar Prasad's editing needs no mention as he stamps his class once more!

Verdict: A varied take on relationships from the eyes of 4 different filmmakers with some hits and misses!

Kutty Story - An anthology that only works in parts, quite literally!

Meera Chithirappaavai

Tamil Film Industry has been seeing more than the usual frequency in anthologies lately. When filmmakers come together to present their stories along with other makers, it needs both confidence & open-mindedness. Anybody’s story could impact the viewing experience of the following or preceding story. Having said that, Kutty Story is an anthology produced by Ishari K Ganesh of Vels Film International. With GVM, Vijay, Venkat Prabhu & Nalan Kumarasamy on board as directors, Kutty Story does make an impact in parts.

Ethipaara Muththam

The first story is of GVM’s where he goes on to play the lead role too. From watching various stars bringing to life a GVM character, it only makes more sense why he is choosing to play his characters lately as they fit naturally on screen. Though the plot is an explored & exploited one, the GVM conversation makes the film gripping. Amala Paul in the lead does what her character needs & successfully takes you with her into the story. Karky’s apt lyrics & Karthik's music and rendition make the experience complete. With Ethirpaara Muththam, it seems like GVM takes a known leaf from his frequently used book of love.

Avanum Naanum

Director Vijay presents his dramatic tale starring Megha Akash, Sunaina & Amitash in the lead. Just like the title the film is also a usual story with close to nothing fresh or unique. The film fails to give you a breather on any aspect. There's drama & then melodrama. This particular story sweeps its way into being a melodramatic one with less or no engagement or connection with the viewer. As mentioned initially, the poor work in the film does impact the feeling one achieves with GVM’s film & keeps the expectation low for the next film.

This is a Venkat Prabhu game! The film opens with a unique setting involving a gamer played by Varun & a particular game. It's a refreshing plot but lacks finesse in execution. However, big appreciation for the varied narrative tools used with animation & VFX. The climax of the film comes as a surprise element that fails to enhance the overall experience. Forced drama & emotions let this film down & unfortunately doesn’t dig up the intended reaction from the viewer. Premji Amaren’s work with music & Praveen KL’s edits deserve a special mention as their work handles this experimental genre well.

Aadal Paadal

Nalan Kumarsamy with his strong background with short-form content in the past proves that he knows his mettle! Aadal Paadal starring Vijay Sethupathi & Aditi Balan is a film that deals with characters & character flaws in an engaging manner. The strength of letting good talents shoulder a nuanced character elevates the film & the experience for a viewer. The BG score rendered by Edwin Louis subtly emerges as a winner among all the other talents that are putting up their best show. This film does justice to the overall idea of telling a story effectively in 30 minutes.

Overall, the anthology Kutty Story is a mix of stories that happen & stories that are forced to happen!

Kutty Story movie review: The good and the bad co-exist in this latest anthology

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

How dearly I have missed the directorial work of Nalan Kumarasamy. Is there another filmmaker who’s so at ease generating laugh-out-loud humour from complex, sensitive situations, and who is able to achieve this without ever trivialising the central issues of the film? The man is a rare talent. In his segment in Kutty Story titled Aadal, Paadal , the song and dance is not of the literal variety. It’s metaphorical and occurs between a husband and wife (played wonderfully by Vijay Sethupathi and Aditi Balan), whose years of togetherness have dented the ‘fun’ in their relationship. This is the word Sethupathi’s character uses to explain away his transgression. Despite the emotional weight of this subject, Nalan proceeds to draw all types of humour from the film. There are jokes of the dialogue variety, like when Aditi’s character responds to her husband saying, “ Un kaiya kaalaa nenachikaren ”, with “ Adhaan kaal irukke .” There’s humour in the body language, especially of Vijay Sethupathi’s: watch him adjust his shirt as though he were a posterboy for model husband behaviour and then quietly, mischievously ask a woman what she’s wearing. The best of all is the situational humour that arises from his wife playing mind games on him. Even the choice of a name ‘Kamakshi Sundaram’ results in a joke. The success of this film is how while it’s making you laugh, it makes all these quiet, sharp points about the double standards in relationships, about how a husband and wife react differently to the same problem, about how women are viewed as property. To put it simply, our cinema could do with more Nalan.

Directors: Gautham Menon, Vijay, Venkat Prabhu, Nalan Kumarasamy

Cast: Gautham Menon, Amala Paul, Vinoth Kishan, Amitash Pradhan, Megha Akash, Varun, Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Balan

Much like Nalan’s film, the others too can be said to deal with the troubles that romantic love runs into. Gautham Menon’s film, Edhirpaara Muththam , is a film I enjoyed too, and is one that talks about the thin line that sometimes differentiates a platonic and a romantic relationship.  The word ‘platonic’, in fact, is referenced several times in his film, once by the friend of Aadhi (Gautham Menon), Prabhakar (Robo Shankar), who quips, “Blood theriyum, tonic theriyum, adhenna platonic?” I enjoyed his presence in this film, even if his humour doesn’t always land. Importantly, the presence of such a comedian seems to help localise the scenes in a way that benefits the contrasting sensibilities of a filmmaker like Gautham Menon. It reminded me of how useful a comedian like Vivek was in Minnale , performing a similar ‘grounding’ role.

There’s a bit of homage being paid to the enduring Ilaiyaaraja classic, ‘ Valayosai ’. For one, there’s a scene of the couple in a bus, and with Mrinalini (Amala Paul who I really liked here) humming this song. There’s a small callback to the visual of this song, when the younger Aadhi (Vinoth Kishan) asks Mrinalini to cover her eyes with a dupatta, and then proceeds to kiss her. The circumstances, of course, are different in this film. Mrinalini and Aadhi are friends in a platonic relationship, something Prabhakar scoffs at and doesn’t think can exist. Aadhi, however, genuinely believes this. Without giving away too much, let me just say that despite Mrinalini’s argument at the end, the film does seem to inadvertently support Prabhakar’s stand. Both Aadhi and I will continue to disagree with Prabhakar—and the film—about this.

This is a space that Gautham comfortably thrives in. Watch him capture those little awkward glances between Aadhi and Mrinalini, the small shifts in their body language as they get comfortable in each other’s presence after a long separation. Watch the evident camaraderie between Aadhi and friends at the dinner table, as they sit exchanging old stories. Watch Aadhi sportingly take in—and almost savour—all the good-natured teasing from his friends. Watch that quiet, vulnerable moment—the moment that results in the title of this film—as Mrinalini stutters between embracing her pent-up feelings and letting them slide, in the face of Aadhi’s lack of romantic interest. This is a film whose real value lies in how it shows that should Gautham Menon, who has dabbled a lot in a certain type of romance over the years, choose to explore variations in this space, there’s plenty of room in which to express himself.

Venkat Prabhu’s short film, Logham , has the fascinating premise of gamers falling in love inside a make-believe universe. Spielberg’s Ready Player One comes to mind. There are some fascinating stretches in this film, as Venkat looks to explore how the gaming world can create possibilities that are not possible for many, given the limitations of the real world. However, this is a film that could have benefitted perhaps with a lead actor who’s able to radiate more conviction and charisma. Some of the dialogue-writing is a bit bland too. When Adam falls in love, he goes, “I love you di. I miss you di. En di enna torture panra?!” It reeks of cliché. That pun on the woman lead’s name, Eve, when the man asks her to show her some ‘ Eve erakkam ’ is inspired, but there needed to be so much more of that in this film.

The towering disappointment of this anthology, one that threatens to bring down the other films with it, is director Vijay’s Avanum Naanum . The film is a sneaky appeal against abortion, and this, of course, isn’t new to the filmmaker who brought us a foetus-ghost (in Sai Pallavi’s Diya ) meant to create feelings of guilt in women who have ever considered or will consider abortions. In Avanum Naanum, Megha Akash once again (after Oru Pakka Kathai ) plays a young woman forced to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.  Here, she plays a silly girl who realises she could be pregnant, only after a friend notes that the count of her sanitary pads hasn’t gone down in sometime. The situation of Megha’s character in this film screams for an abortion. It’s also a film that feels contrived from start to finish. Be it the caricature of a hotel receptionist, or the horrible prank played on the heroine in a hotel room, or the decision-making of her heroine’s friend… I could go on and on. Thankfully, the film doesn’t, as it’s a short film. Such are the benefits of an anthology.

In Edhirpaara Muththam, Aadhi and Mrinalini are college mates. They say that they are good friends. Once, they had their lunch together and in the end, they kissed. After years, they got married to someone and settled in different locations. What will happen when they meet again?

In Avanum Naanum, Preeti is a college girl. She loves Vikram. Both were intimate and Preeti is pregnant now. She tells this to Vikram. But, after this, she couldn’t contact him. The confused Preeti was asked to abort the child. What did she do?

In Lokham, Varun is a gamer and he meets a fellow gamer online. He wants to meet her in the real-life. Did he succeed?

In Aadal Paadal, a husband cheats his wife. When the wife finds it out, will his situation turn worse? Did their marriage gets quit or continue?

Star Performance

The stars had performed pretty decently in all the stories. Vijay Sethupathi and Aditi Balan’s performance is the top-notch among all. The rest of the stars in other shorts had also performed well.

All the stories are different; yet fall under the category, love. Gautham Menon’s direction is good with a lot of emotions and crispy dialogues. The cinematography and the music in all the stories are good. CG portions in Lokham is good. Not all the stories are overwhelming and they have some ups and downs.

What’s There?

  • Impressive star cast and neat performance
  • Different stories by different makers
  • Production and technical values are good.

What’s Not There?

  • Lokham could have been made better

Some stories have a good cast, neat story and performance and some lack in the execution. Overall, Kutty Story is watchable once!

Kutty Story Movie Review

Venkat prabhu’s film is the best of the lot in this anthology featuring four established directors. down goes our kutty story movie review..

kutty story movie review

The anthology segment is getting really crowded here in Tamil cinema, with the OTT arena already finding some traffic. And still, Kollywood finds a way to build an anthology for the big screen, and pack it up with some well known directors. Kutty Story is the very first time that a Tamil anthology with different directors comes to the big screen, and it features films from Gautham Menon, Vijay, Venkat Prabhu and Nalan Kumarasamy.

The four films deal with different aspects of love. Gautham Menon’s story is in his alley, dissecting a ‘platonic’ relationship, Vijay’s story deals with the problems surrounding an abortion, Venkat Prabhu takes a dive into the gaming world, while Nalan Kumarasamy takes a minimalistic route with a post-marital affair. All the four films follow similar runtimes and are dipped in the urban world majorly. The film is indeed an upmarket present on the whole, but the sad part here is in how not even one of the stories impress in full. While a couple of the stories are fair enough, the others are barely watchable.

Gautham Menon’s story brings up too much of his elements, and with an overload of dialogues. Vijay’s film is decent, and though it is a rehash of his own feature film Karu, it has a nice ending that makes it finish on a good note. Venkat Prabhu gets really creative with his film, giving it lots of animation and a little twist too. And finally, Nalan Kumarasamy impresses in bits and pieces with his interestingly placed story that falls short of greatness due to some forced urban culture and some awkwardness in the dialogues.

In terms of the performances, it is Aditi Balan in Nalan’s film who brings a lot of life into the proceedings. It’s a completely different outing for her from her debut, and that’s what makes it click. The rest of the cast are unanimously decent.

The technicalities are fine, with not much being done but for Venkat Prabhu’s film which has a lot of CG work which is cool to see.

On the whole, Kutty Story is a plain and watchable anthology, but might pique your interest for its cast and design. Kutty Story Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas

Verdict: A just-about-par anthology that is a decent watch on the whole.
