Michael Giacchino and Kevin Feige on the New Marvel Studios Special Presentation Intro

“it's an homage, and it's a love letter to those things, when they used to take the time to say, hey, we're giving you something different here.".

special presentation

There’s some new Marvel fanfare in town. At the beginning of Werewolf by Night — the first-ever Marvel Studios Special Presentation arriving on Disney+ today — an original score kicks off the feature, clearly indicating that this is something exciting and different we haven’t seen before. The Marvel Studios Special Presentation fanfare was actually composed by Michael Giacchino, who already has a long list of Marvel Studios score credits to his name, from Doctor Strange to Thor: Love and Thunder , in addition to all three recent Spider-Man movies. For the first time ever, he also steps into the director’s chair to helm Werewolf by Night . Making specific “holiday specials” was always an idea for Marvel Studios when Disney+ entered the mix, and as Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige explains, with the new special presentation treatment, “We wanted to tap into the nostalgia we had as kids when the weekly scheduled entertainment would be interrupted for a show like ‘It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!’ or ‘Frosty the Snowman’ or ‘Rudolph.’” “When Kevin and I were talking about this, both of us were massive fans of when you were a kid, and one of those special logos came up, and you could not wait [to watch],” Giacchino says. “If you were in the other room, and you heard that on television, you ran to the TV room.” The idea to pay tribute to this sentimentality from television yesteryear came about by creating not only a new logo but also a new sound to kick it off. “Many of the networks had their own logos that indicated a special was about to begin, and we thought it would be fun to do an homage to those,” Feige continues. “Michael loved the idea and said he'd write the music.” “We wanted to do something similar,” Giacchino adds. “It's an homage, and it's a love letter to those things, when they used to take the time to say, hey, we're giving you something different here. This is something unique. It's not something you're going to see every week, like all the other programming on our network. It's going to be different. Feige and Giacchino spent time reminiscing over memories of watching these specials on TV, with Giacchino referencing the “excitement” around these extra-special episodes. “We were like, remember the bongos and all of that stuff you would hear in the beginning, and it was sort of this energetic burst of newness. We were just like, let's do that. So we did. We just went for it.” Though brief, the special presentation music is an absolute bop , and one sure to elicit that same level of excitement when it arrives on Disney+ now and with future special presentations to come. It’s that kind of longevity that really excites Giacchino about what he’s created, considering it will live in special presentations to come, well after Werewolf by Night . “Any time you do something that lives on beyond just what you did it for, that's a really good feeling,” he continues. “I mean, if I'm at Disneyland or something with the kids and I hear Up or Inside Out or anything or The Incredibles , it still blows my mind that is happening. That's the highest tribute, in a way, the fact that something will live on beyond the element for which it was created. I love that.”

Werewolf by Night is now streaming on Disney+.

Watch: Marvel Studios Debuts New Logo with Fanfare by Michael Giacchino

With Phase 3 underway, new creative control, and almost a decade of success, a new logo was warranted.

Last night at their Comic-Con presentation, Marvel debuted their new logo along with a fanfare by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino ( Up ). The logo is a nice way to recognize that Marvel Studios has really come into its own and while I’m a firm believer than production titles shouldn’t be longer than 15 seconds, I’m willing to give Marvel a bit of leeway. Check out the new logo below and get used to it because you’re going to be seeing it front of Marvel movies for a while:

What I like about this logo is that it acknowledges Marvel Studios’ history rather than being an outgrowth of Marvel Comics. The old logo worked at the time, but it made the studio seem like what it was—an outgrowth of the comic division, and it must pay homage to its origins. But after eight years of hits and billions of dollars, Marvel Studios is a heavy hitter in its own right, and they can acknowledge their own history within their logo.

A change in logo is also good because not only are we now in Phase 3, but you may recall that last September, Marvel Studios dissolved its creative group and had president Kevin Feige report directly to Disney. So we’re not just in a new era of the MCU; we’re also in a new era for the company, and this new logo feels like a way of acknowledging that.

Marvel Studios Rebrand

Marvel Studios Logo Rebrand

INTRODUCTION

In January 2016, we were approached by Marvel Studios to help collaborate on an exceptionally special project—to redesign the logo and craft the opening animation for the next era of Marvel Studios that will precede all of their feature films for years to come.

Marvel Studios Rebrand | Final Sequence

CREATIVE CHALLENGE

The brief from Marvel was open, with one specific request from Kevin Feige himself — to combine the brand and the iconic characters into a single image, showcasing the heroes within the letterforms of the MARVEL logo.

Otherwise, we were asked to approach this as a new chapter in the ever expanding story of Marvel Studios, and the new logo and animation needed to make that statement. We accomplished this by taking cues from the brand equity of the past, while showcasing the growth and expanse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

EARLY CONCEPTS

As with previous collaborations with Marvel, our process began by exploring numerous concepts. By experimenting with different conceptual and visual themes, we were able to not just propose solutions, but begin a collaborative process with the entire team at Marvel. We would come to agree on one concept that was unanimously the favorite, establishing the foundation for the logo development.

HOW TO BUILD A UNIVERSE

The familiar metaphor of stacked pages quickly expands into something much bigger, as we see a process through which classic tales are a seed awaiting tremendous growth and development. The powerful beam of creativity projects through comic books and museum glass, colliding with script pages and concept art. The dynamic cross-pollination breaks through these layers and sprouts into a rapidly growing universe. While these cosmos are ever-expanding, from a distance it always looks like one thing: MARVEL STUDIOS.

BUILDING A UNIVERSE STEP BY STEP

After a lengthy evaluation and decision-making process, Kevin Feige and the entire Marvel team asked us to develop the “How To Build a Universe” concept. Every Marvel film is the result of dedicated work from thousands of people from hundreds of disciplines in locations spanning the globe. The “How To Build a Universe” concept was designed to pay tribute to this process by touching on these key components:

  • Legendary COMICS are the foundation and history
  • Hollywood’s greatest screenwriters translate the themes of the comics to a SCRIPT
  • The best production designers, costume designers, and artists create CONCEPT ART
  • Incredible directors, cast and crew craft the FILMS
  • A shared universe of various films & characters defines the MARVEL UNIVERSE

MARVEL COMICS

Since the very first Spider-Man (2001), and long before Marvel Studios was its own entity, any Marvel-related film began with some form of the ‘flipping pages’ logo. Our team was unanimous in wanting to pay tribute to this iconic animation, originally developed in 2001. As the new Marvel Studios logo animation begins, it is initially identical to the historic ‘flipping pages’ logo, both reflecting on and respecting the studios history.

FROM PAGE TO SCRIPT

The stories that give these comic book characters nuance and depth in film are the crucial component in any Marvel Studios film. In the logo animation, we see various lines lifted directly from the script pages of various Marvel screenplays.

We wanted to find quotes that were both iconic fan-favorites, as well as lines that helped establish the breadth of the Marvel Universe. Some eluded to the entire spirit of Marvel Studios (“ FURY: The idea was to bring together a group of of remarkable people to see if they could become something more.”), while others encapsulated the depth within the rich characters (NATASHA: “I’ve got some red in my ledger”).

MARVEL CONCEPT ART

Marvel Studio’s films are overflowing with incredible realizations of characters, locations, vehicles, weapons and technologies. What you see on film was visualized years in advance by Marvel Studios’ brilliant head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding and a team of incredibly talented concept artists whose paintings define the visual goals for the entire production.

We mined through a massive archive of concept art and “The Art Of
” books, to select the most iconic images for each beloved character. Utilizing the original digital paintings themselves, our team animated each image being painted from scratch. The final touch was mapping this artwork onto 3D models (many left-overs from our Avengers: Age of Ultron title sequence) to giving these once 2D paintings a sense of depth as the camera moves around them.

BRIDGING CONCEPT TO FILM

The link between concept and film is a key turning point in the logo animation, and we explored several different approaches, characters and techniques to show these concepts coming to life in film.

Marvel Studio’s catalogue of films are loaded with iconic moments and vivid characters, and we wanted to create an environment that would surround viewers with everything we love about each of the Marvel Studio films. In the process, we reviewed hundreds of selects made from each of Marvel’s films (13 at the time the logo was conceived), carefully choreographing timing and composition of footage showcasing numerous characters.

Altogether, there are over 70 pieces of footage that can be seen in the final logo. Editing, color balancing and getting clearances on each and every one was no small feat. Our team also explored numerous ways of arranging the footage within the form of the overall logo, ultimately leading to the “vault” where luminescent footage plays on the interior walls of the “MARVEL” logotype.

THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

An equally important responsibility and huge honor we were given, was to redesign and rebrand the logo of Marvel Studios itself. This is the brand identifier that is to be used across all Marvel Studios materials—hats, shirts, stationary, film posters, and all corporate materials across the universe.

Since Marvel Studios has evolved into its own powerhouse entity, one of the main tasks was to give the word “Studios” its own special treatment and power, while also keeping the balance with the word Marvel. Below is a small sampling of the many iterations the re-design of the logo went through.

FINAL MARVEL STUDIOS LOGO ANIMATION

On July 23, 2016 in front of a standing room only crowd in Hall H at Comic Con, the logo was finally unveiled by Kevin Feige to the world. Combined with music composed by Michael Giacchino, the result pays tribute to the history of Marvel Studios, showcasing the incredible effort that goes into each and every film every step of the way. The Marvel spirit drawn from comics, scripts, concept art and beyond is what makes Marvel Studios the force it is today. The new logo animation’s first appearance was on the Doctor Strange trailer at San Diego Comic Con, and it is slated to be seen at the open of every MCU films for years to come.

We are humbled and honored to have been the team selected to bring this journey to life along side of Kevin Feige, Victoria Alonso, Louis D’esposito, Jeremy Latcham, Danielle Costa and many other brilliant people at Marvel!

Exclusive: Marvel’s Nova to Be a Special Presentation on Disney+

nova marvel

Share this:

In March of this year, the trades revealed Marvel Studios officially gave the go-ahead on the heavily rumored debut of Nova. Fans were ecstatic to learn that one of Marvel’s most popular cosmic heroes was finally debuting in the MCU. Sabir Pirzada is currently writing the project.  Pirzada’s previous work with Marvel Studios includes Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel .

To date, there are no additional details regarding the project. There’s no director publicly assigned, as well as no set release date. Fans don’t even know which version of Nova will be the one to take up the title for the MCU. The most popular iterations to take up the mantle are Richard Rider (the Original Nova) and Sam Alexander (New Generation).

We offered some insight into what Marvel intended to do with the character by introducing Rider and Alexander in the project. Still, details about how Marvel would tackle this project have been relatively scarce. But now, we have a couple of new tidbits that could clear up the mystery of The Man Called Nova.

The Disney+ question

One of the first questions fans asked was whether Nova  would premiere as a theatrical film or a project on Disney+. The trades at the time could not confirm either possibility. The consensus was  Nova would be more plausible as a Disney+ premiere instead of a theatrically released film.

Nova

From what we are being told by trusted sources, it appears that the speculative consensus will pan out. The Nova project will premiere on Disney+. Now, exactly when can we expect this project to premiere? It could be a while before we get official confirmation on a release date. After all, this is still in the writing phase, and what makes it all the more challenging to predict could be due to the format Marvel plans to present it.

Nova: A Marvel Studios Special Presentation

Earlier this month, we revealed that Marvel Studios was planning on developing more Marvel Studios Special Presentations following Werewolf by Night . This report discussed the different scenarios in which Marvel planned to utilize the Special Presentation format. One way was to develop projects that have already been previously announced to be in development as Disney+ projects, while the other was to introduce new characters to the MCU that don’t necessarily have that many if at all, connections to the MCU.

The reasoning is that these spin-off projects are better in the long run for both audiences and productions alike. In that report, we mentioned some examples of projects that could be candidates for the Special Presentation format. Some examples include the untitled Okoye Show, the rumored Ten Rings spin-off that focuses on Xialing , or projects that have already been announced, like Nova and Wonder Man.

We have received information from our trusted sources that Nova will be a Marvel Studios Special Presentation. This presentation will premiere on Disney+ at an unrevealed date at this time. And while details are scarce regarding the show’s plot, predictions can be made regarding the upcoming special.

What story could be told in a Nova Special

Having Nova  as a special presentation means that the story that will be told will more likely than not be an origin story of sorts. While we have not heard anything new regarding the story of the special, we will base ourselves on the premise that the story will still feature both Richard Rider and Sam Alexander. In that case, we could see this special taking the route of introducing Sam Alexander and loosely basing itself on his origin story from the 2013 Nova Run.

The story could have Sam searching for his father, Jesse Alexander, a member of the Nova Corp who has gone missing. On the way, he encounters another decorated member of the Nova Corp, Richard Rider, who was also searching for his father, along with his Nova helmet. As Sam finds it, the special can develop into a mentor-trainee story where Richard teaches Sam how to use the helmet, just in time to fight against an incoming alien threat.

Following the climactic battle, the special can end with Richard letting Sam keep the helmet so he can uphold his father’s legacy. This would allow Sam to remain on Earth with his newly found cosmic powers and have Richard promptly return to the cosmos until Marvel Studios needs them again. This special would also fast-track Marvel’s theme of introducing the next generation of heroes already established within the MCU while still keeping both heroes active for the time being.

How the special presentation format benefits Nova

Earlier, we discussed how this special presentation format benefits audiences and productions. For audiences, they won’t have to wait for 6-9 weeks to know the whole story Marvel wants to tell with the character. Additionally, the specials will have longer runtimes than most Disney+ episodes. This allows more story and development to take place within a longer runtime in one special than what can be covered in 3-4 episodes.

For productions, the quality can improve given the less work they have to cover on a tight schedule. This also enhances the factor of casting and filming schedules. Marvel Studios could employ the “foot-in-the-door” technique when it comes to these projects.

When looking to cast actors for these productions, getting big-name actors to be a part of a project is easier if the shooting schedule is 2-3 weeks compared to several months of filming. Also, if we get actors to participate in smaller projects, they will likely return for larger-scale projects in the future.

Another benefit of this format is gauging audiences’ reactions to the character Marvel presents. If the audience’s reception is mainly positive, then the character could show up more frequently in the future in other projects. Much like how Werewolf By Night, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing will play a more significant role in the future of the MCU, either in a team like the Midnight Sons or somewhere else.
