I am excited to be applying for the Math Teacher position at Jefferson High School. I have a degree in mathematics and five years of experience teaching math at the high school level. I believe that I have the skills and passion necessary to help students in your district achieve their academic goals.

I have been a teacher for the past five years, and during that time, I have consistently received excellent evaluations from my students, parents, and colleagues. In my previous role at Lincoln High School, I was responsible for teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. I also coached the math team and served as the advisor for the math club.

I am passionate about teaching math and helping students to understand and appreciate the beauty of mathematics. I am also a strong believer in the importance of hands-on learning. I have found that when students are able to apply the concepts they are learning to real-world situations, they are more likely to remember and understand the material. I strive to create a classroom environment that is both challenging and supportive, where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss the Math Teacher position at Jefferson High School. I am confident that I have the skills and passion necessary to be a successful teacher in your district. My resume is enclosed for your reference.

Cover Letter Guide

How to write the perfect math teacher cover letter.

Math Teacher cover letter

What’s the best thing about writing a Math Teacher cover letter? You get to decide which parts of your experience need to be highlighted and which should better be skipped!

And what’s the thing that will make every hiring manager want to learn more about you? Mentioning the tools that have helped you overcome challenges and improve your skillset.

Let's look at our professional tips and examples that will help you write a memorable cover letter and land an interview.

math teacher coverletter.png

Let’s begin by discussing the difference between a cover letter and a resume. The resume is the place where you should list all your hard skills, achievements, and talents.

The cover letter, on the other hand, is your chance to share more about yourself and show who you are.

But what’s the way to grab the reader’s attention? How can you make the hiring manager want to meet you and learn more about you?

Use an appropriate salutation and write a powerful introduction

Addressing your cover letter to a person is always something you should aim to do.

But finding who's responsible for the recruitment process might not be the easiest thing. We get it.

In such cases, we advise you to stick to the gender-neutral cover letter salutations.

Here are some examples of suitable classic salutations:

  • Dear Mr. John,
  • Dear Ms. Petersen,
  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear Dr. Todd,
  • Dear Head of [team you're applying for]

The introduction of your cover letter is the first thing the hiring manager will read. Logically, having a strong introduction is your chance of getting their attention.

In order to do that, you need to get creative. Don’t just do what everyone else’s been doing for years, i.e. writing “I found this job opening on that website and decided to apply”.

Rather, show that you are genuinely excited about the position and the company. You could do that by mentioning your love for the industry or what you can bring to the table.

Emphasize your Math Teacher soft skills and mention your hard skills

So what skills do you need to include? Well, unfortunately, there’s no one answer to this. It all depends on the job description and the skills you’ve currently got.

According to experts, what recruiters look for in cover letters is how you can link your soft skills to particular achievements and goals. So, try to figure out what has helped you on the way to success.

However, don’t forget about hard skills. Even if they’re not the focus of your happy story, you need to include at least the ones that were mentioned as part of the requirements section of the job posting. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen applicant documents for certain keywords and phrases.

Show that you've researched the company

Having a paragraph that shows you’re aware of the company and the issues it faces is always a good idea. It proves your enthusiasm to join the team and makes a great impression.

For bonus points, you could also share how some of your strengths could help resolve company or even industry problems.

End on a positive note

While a strong introduction makes a great first impression, a confident, yet considerate conclusion is essentially what will get you a callback.

There are different ways to end your cover letter. But remember – the closing line you choose should match the company culture.

Your safest bet would be going for traditional phrases like “Looking forward to hearing from you” or “Looking forward to your reply”. For bonus points, add a simple “Thank you for your time and consideration”.

How to create a good cover letter for a math teacher: free tips and tricks

A math teacher works with students of different ages. If you want to get this job, get ready to show all your professionalism and talent. And in order to become the best candidate for this role, we have prepared a list of tips that will help you create an eye-catching math teacher cover letter example for the resume. So, let's highlight all your strengths.

The goal of any math teacher is to develop critical thinking in students using mathematical and logical principles. Thus, you must be open-minded and have strong analytical thinking. Focus on these skills.

You will work with different classes, and you must be able to maintain discipline and be a strict enough teacher. If you cannot manage children and be their authority, it will be difficult for you to get this job.

A big plus would be if you describe a short example of what results you've achieved as an expert. For instance, you improved class performance in mathematics. This will show the employer what to expect from you.

Do not make a standard boring letter, do not use too many generic phrases or patterns from the Internet. Your letter should be vivid, memorable, and correspond precisely to your experience. The good idea is to apply a beautiful layout.

You must be well versed in the art of teaching, as well as a specialist in developing curriculum and study guides. If you have any own methods, it would be nice to write a brief description about them.

Many entry-level teachers are getting nervous due to lack of experience and consider that they will not be hired. Do not worry about it. Focus on your education; it's better to describe the additional courses you've completed.

Each paragraph of your application document should be to the point and reflect the current requirements of the employer. To cope with this task, skim a few job descriptions as well as teacher cover letter examples and tips. It will be to your advantage to limit your paper to one page.

Do not include detailed information about your university, degree, and previous employers in your cover letter. First, this information repeats your resume. Second, if the desired company wants to clear your background, it can do it during a telephone conversation or an interview.

Dear Livia, I express my interest in a Mathematics Teacher position at Washington High School, as advertised on your website. I would be delighted to work in your reputable educational institution and utilize all my skills and qualifications to enhance the prestige of your school.

My hands-on experience includes 8 years as a math teacher at St. Helena's School. Being in this position, I developed strategies and innovative approaches to students, thanks to which I was able to increase class performance in mathematics by more than 40%. I was also repeatedly elected as the teacher of the year at my previous job. I have strong analytical thinking along with excellent communication skills, which enables me to easily and interestingly explain complex material to my students and develop their critical thinking and ability to solve problems.

I am a motivated and hardworking person, and I am always happy to stay in the classroom for extra time, in order to explain to the students what they could not understand and help them learn additional material. I am also a friendly and responsible team member and always maintain good relationships with all parts of the teaching staff.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to discuss them in detail in an interview. Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to hear from you soon.

Math and Science Teacher Cover Letter Example (Full Text Version)

Dear Hiring Manager,

As a Middle School Mathematics and Science Teacher with 7 years of experience, I apply with enthusiasm for this opportunity.

I began my career as a high school Mathematics and Science Teacher in Wisconsin before relocating to Germany for 2 years to work as the Head of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Teacher for an international school. After moving back to the US and completing my Master of Middle School Education, I joined Pentz Senior School in Ohio as Science Teacher.

As well as the planning and delivery of high-quality teaching in physical and virtual settings, I am experienced in administering and evaluating assessments in preparation for examinations. I employ a range of traditional and progressive methodology, incorporating experiential learning opportunities whenever possible.

I see myself as an educator, not just a teacher. I encourage students to question their actions, the way that others live, and how we can use our knowledge to question the choices we make. I foster collaborations with school leadership and fellow teachers that promote a flexible, supportive, and dynamic learning environment. I am delighted by the 93% average pass rate that my classes achieve.

In addition to my experience and Master of Middle School Education, I hold a Bachelor of Education (Mathematics and Science) and am a Google Certified Educator (Levels 1 and 2).

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Pentz. As I am eager to return to a role where I can teach both my core passions, I am seeking an opportunity at another school where I can make a meaningful impact. After researching your organization in detail, I feel confident about our mutual fit.

Please find attached my curriculum vitae for your consideration. Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

25 Teacher Cover Letters Examples To Help You Get Hired

Your guide to a killer cover letter that will get you that interview.

Teacher Cover Letter Examples

Whether you are sending out resumes hoping to land your first teaching job or looking to shift to a new school or district, one fact remains the same: All the best credentials, experience, and passion will go unnoticed without a strong cover letter. The main rule? Sell yourself the way a publicist would. Cover letters aren’t a time for modesty. They’re a time to highlight your accomplishments and make your passion for teaching known. Below you’ll find our tips for creating the best cover letter possible and our top teacher cover letter and CV examples.

3 top tips for crafting a teacher CV or cover letter:

Keep it short and sweet..

You’ve only got about 30 seconds to capture a hiring director’s attention, so start with what we call “the elevator pitch.” Imagine you have the time between the elevators closing on one floor and opening again on another floor to sell yourself. Instead of rehashing everything on your resume, use the space to craft a paragraph or two that will convince them you are a standout candidate and are worth moving on to the next step.

Emphasize why you’re a great match.

Read the job description and find the overlap between the skills you bring to the table and the skills they need. If the job description calls for certain qualities or uses specific language, repeat them in your cover letter! The ultimate goal for your cover letter is to say, “You’ve got a problem? I’m the ideal person to solve it.” Be professional and use concrete examples.

Individualize!

Tailor each and every cover letter to fit the specific school, district, and job for which you’re applying. Research the school and its culture. That way, you can address their expectations and also use specific examples of achievements in your history to show why you’re the right candidate for the position.

Start your Teacher cover letter by addressing the hiring manager by name, if possible. If you don't know their name, use a formal salutation like "Dear Hiring Manager." Then, introduce yourself and express your interest in the specific teaching position. Mention where you found the job posting and why you are excited about the opportunity. For example, "I am writing to express my interest in the 5th Grade Teacher position at XYZ Elementary School, which I learned about from your website. With my background in child development and passion for education, I believe I could make a significant contribution to your team." This introduction is professional, direct, and shows your enthusiasm for the role.

The best way for teachers to end a cover letter is by expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity and gratitude for the reader's time. You can say something like, "I am excited about the possibility of bringing my unique skills and experiences to your school and am confident I can make a positive impact on your students' lives. Thank you for considering my application." This shows that you are eager about the job and respectful of the reader's time. It's also important to include a professional closing, such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name. Remember to leave space for a signature if you're sending a hard copy.

Teachers should include several key elements in their cover letter to make it effective and compelling. 1. Personal Information: Start with your name, address, contact number, and email address. 2. Salutation: Address the hiring manager or principal directly, if possible. If you don't know their name, use a general greeting like "Dear Hiring Manager." 3. Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself, the position you're applying for, and where you found the job listing. 4. Teaching Experience: Detail your teaching experience, including the grades and subjects you've taught. Mention any special training or certifications you have, such as special education or ESL. 5. Skills and Qualifications: Highlight your skills and qualifications that make you a good fit for the job. This could include classroom management techniques, curriculum development, or technology integration. 6. Achievements: Discuss any notable achievements in your teaching career, such as improving test scores, implementing innovative teaching methods, or receiving teaching awards. 7. Knowledge about the School: Show that you've done your research about the school and explain why you're interested in working there. This could include the school's teaching philosophy, programs, or community involvement. 8. Passion for Teaching: Express your passion for teaching and your commitment to student success. 9. Closing: Thank the reader for considering your application and express your interest in an interview. 10. Signature: End with a professional closing like "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name and signature. Remember, your cover letter should complement, not duplicate, your resume. It's your chance to tell a story about your teaching career and to show your enthusiasm for the job. Tailor each cover letter to the specific job and school to show that you're genuinely interested and that you've taken the time to customize your application.

How To Write a Cover Letter With Examples

Cover Letter Do's and Dont's

Cover letters can help differentiate you from other job applicants and be the determining factor of landing your dream job. By taking the time to craft a custom cover letter, a single sheet of paper can help communicate all the human elements that a resume may fall short of capturing about yourself.

But what do employers and recruiters have to say about how to write a cover letter? What are the best tips they have to offer for graduate students who are writing a cover letter?

We asked 11 employers for their best cover letter tips. Here is what they had to share.

Let it Set the Stage

In many ways, cover letters should provide background information and context to your resume, while simultaneously addressing how that resume addresses the specific requirements of the job opportunity. The cover letter is your opportunity to "set the stage" and to convince the hiring manager why your specific set of skills, experiences and interests will provide value to their team and its objectives.

Research the Hiring Manager

If possible, find out who the hiring manager is and look them up on LinkedIn. Do your research on the company you're applying for. What's their mission statement and how do they portray their company culture? Hopefully what you're looking for in a job is reflected by those things. Make sure the hiring manager knows that and understands who you are and what drives you. A resume is often about as robotic as things can be. Make sure your cover letter is the opposite—personalize it and let yourself shine through.

Utilize Career Development Resources

The University of Arizona and Eller College of Management go to great lengths to make sure students are prepared for their impending career journey. Because cover letters are so important to getting your foot in the door, there are several career development resources online and on campus to take advantage of. The university’s cover letter builder serves as a nice template to get started. And of course, it never hurts to make an appointment with an Eller Career Coach through eSMS to have a professional review your letter before submission.

Discover Past Samples of the Position

Do your research on the company and personalize your cover letter to the role for which you are applying. Don't be afraid to Google, "How to write a good cover letter for X position." Seriously, it helps! There is so much information out there from various perspectives—applicants, hiring managers, etc. Most importantly be yourself and let your personality come through. And don't forget to spell check!

Highlight Your Soft Skills

When writing a professional cover letter, there are a couple things you can do to set yourself apart from the pack. First, make sure you tailor your letter to the specific position you are applying for. This should not be a general, "one size fits all" letter—be sure to discuss specific details surrounding the role or the company itself. Secondly, this is an opportunity for you to show a little bit of your personality. Obviously, you want to remain professional, but this is a great time to highlight some of your soft skills that might not be fully conveyed through your resume.

Fill in the “Why” Gaps

As a talent advisor, I review a lot of applicants and agree that a cover letter can be a great way to stand apart, if it is done correctly. A great cover letter for me covers the ‘why’ that I cannot understand from just a resume alone. It should clearly state why you are interested in the role, what your goals are for utilizing your graduate degree (if recently graduated) and explain any career pivots reflected on your resume. If you answer those questions in a direct, concise manner it will add value to your application.

Monica Larson , ’11 BSBA (Marketing) ‘20 MBA, Talent Advisor

Tell Your Story

A cover letter is your opportunity to tell your story—tying your experience and personal interests into why you want a position and why you are the best candidate for it. Paint the picture of your journey and what about the position excites you personally and professionally. Similar to your resume, keep it short and sweet. No need to repeat what’s already on your resume. Recruiters and hiring managers don’t have time to comb through a novel, so you need to engage them with as few words as possible while also grabbing their attention.

Kelly Castoro, ’06 BA (Spanish, Portuguese), Project Manager at Squarespace

Tailor Each Cover Letter to the Position You Are Applying

Be sure to research the role and customize your cover letter for each position, relating your experience to the particular role you are applying for. Personalization is key—research who you are sending the cover letter to and address the letter to them directly. End your letter with a call to action, stating you will follow up by phone or email if you haven’t heard from anyone. Follow ups are very important!

Jessica Rosenzweig, ’15 BSBA (Business Management), Account Manager at PeopleWare Staffing

Communicate Bankability and Personality

Your cover letter answers two crucial questions; are you bankable and are you someone the company will enjoy working with? Communicate bankability with your knowledge of the company, industry and why your skills, capabilities and interests are a great fit. Share your passion for their mission, culture, brand—whatever excites you about becoming a member of their team.

When conveyed through a concise, well-formulated, well-worded cover letter, you demonstrate the ability to write an effective business case—communicating that you are a ready professional and worthy teammate who will hit the ground running.

Theresa L Garcia, ’83 BSBA (Human Resources), Senior Change Management and Organization Capability Consultant at Boeing

Keep it Concise but Compelling

A cover letter is your chance to speak directly to the hiring team and tell them why you are not only the best match for the position for which you are applying but also give them additional insight into yourself as an individual that is less visible from your experience.

A great cover letter should be attention grabbing and touch upon the qualities that make you stand out from others in the applicant pool, highlight both your recent and most distinguished accomplishments and drive home why you are the right person for the job. Professionalism is always important, but don’t be hesitant to put your voice into the letter to let your personality shine through. Research the company, understand where they currently are, where they are going and show why you are the right person to get them from point A to point B. Recruiters spend a lot of time reviewing applicants and making yourself stand apart from the crowd is key. Keep it concise but compelling!

Matt Reineberg, ’14 BSBA (Marketing), Senior Talent Acquisition Sourcer at Cox Enterprises

Highlight the “Why”

Why are you applying to this company? Why do you want this position? Your cover letter should aim to answer the why behind applying for the job. Conveying an interest and excitement for working specifically for this job at this company, rather than a desire to get any job anywhere that will give you money, can go a long way. Show the company that they should hire you and your passion over someone that might have the skills needed for the job, but doesn’t care about the work as much as you do.
