A Student Survey Market Research Project

The purpose of this project is to expose the students to the type of survey research conducted by large market research and polling companies. This will include a presentation of the statistical considerations associated with understanding the population under consideration, sampling requirements, data collection techniques, data analyses, error estimations, and sample to population projections. This thematic unit explores these concepts within survey research as utilized by marketing research companies, and how it can be adapted to the high school classroom in an experimental model.

The grade level for this project is expected to include students taking an Algebra 2 class, which includes minimal coverage of probability and statistics, or the high school statistics or economics classes.

Most people are affected by the marketing research done by companies such as P&G, General Motors, and Coca Cola. Each company spends millions of dollars each year to advertise their products based upon survey research data gathered using sampling principles. Students who feel that they might eventually start their own small businesses, or enter the field of marketing or survey research, or just want to get a better understanding of why companies make some of their product and marketing decisions will gain a better understanding of some of the statistical and financial aspects and ramifications inherent in and resulting from sound market knowledge. The project explores the two questions, what are the underlying statistical principles, and how can they be explored in the classroom with simple survey experiments conducted by the students?

Student involvement is crucial for the success of this unit. It allows all students to get involved, and it facilitates the transition from a traditional class format into one where discovery learning is taking place. As students construct their research project, they will be determining the type and scope of consumer products to consider, and the population of individuals to be surveyed for consumer preferences. This unit will provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with the use of the graphing calculator, such as the TI-83 plus, or a spreadsheet program to calculate sums, means, standard deviations , and population projections. The lessons provide an opportunity for students to graph functions, create tables, and create correlation estimates.

For each of the various lessons, three to five days will be required to complete the assignments. The entire unit should take about 12 classroom days to complete. It is advised that the entire project be spread over several weeks and interspersed into other lessons.

The units will enable students to explore the concepts of survey design, sample selection, data gathering, observation weighting, share of market estimation, level of market projection, and standard error of estimates calculations. Each concept will be first presented with a theoretical emphasis, and then follows with practical applications of these theoretical concepts.

Teaching Strategies

Most statistics classes cover the concepts of measures of central tendency, probability theory, and sample design at some depth. However, in most high school mathematics classes, these are not given more than a brief overview. Here these concepts are explore as students choose real-world domains that have some interest to them, such as what are the current clothing fashions, or what are the most popular fast food selections. Students will decide on a product class to explore, and up to five items within the product class. Students will determine the population from which they will gather their raw data. In some cases, census estimates may provide measures of the population such that sample to population projections can be made. Students will create a sample frame that best represents the desired population. They will design a data-gathering vehicle that can be administered by the student in a simple interviewing environment. Data will be gathered and evaluated by the students. Final conclusions will be generated and presentations of the findings prepared and presented.

Classroom Activities

The first unit will have the students form groups of four. They will decide on a consumer product class to research.

Since almost all students are addicted to fast food, I have chosen McDonalds as an illustration. The web site http://www.fatcalories.com/ contains most fast food chains and provides a

listing of their menus including all of the caloric and fat information. This site is enjoyable for most students. Students can easily find a selection of no more than 20 items from this list by simply asking some of their best friends what their favorites are. Here is the list of food items from McDonald’s:

Students should take the complete menu listing and narrow it to a dozen to 20 items. Then they need to create a questionnaire . I have provided an example here of some general questions and item specific questions for the first ten items from McDonald’s.

They will then determine the appropriate population of consumers of these products. My suggestion is that they look at a zip code as their geographic boundary. Demographics are available by zip code at http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en . I am demonstrating with zip code 19151.

Within the zip code they can isolate a segment of the population, such as persons between the ages of 15-19. Under General Characteristics, use the show more option to get additional details. In general, students should find this or other similar web sites interesting.

This page shows that there were 2,315 persons in the 15-19 age category, or 7.1%, out of a total population of 31,255 for zip code 19151. This 15-19 age demographic will be used later to project the raw sample results to population estimates.

If students are curious, the web site http://www.census.gov/dmd/www/pdf/d20ap0.pdf shows what the United States 2000 Individual Census report questionnaire looked like.

In the second unit, students will approach the target sample audience and collect data manually. They will experience the ease and difficulties involved in attempts to collect accurate information from the target sample, including demographics with which to project sample data to population estimates. Priorities may have to be refocused as students realize that they are over-sampling some sectors and under-sampling other sectors of their population. As data are collected, they can be entered into forms that can be entered into hand held calculators or spreadsheets for the analyses to be conducted in Unit 3.

Conducting sixty surveys divided between four students in the group is a manageable task. Over the course of three to five days, each should be able to conduct three to five per day. The group needs to decide what their target population is and how to draw a representative sample within it. At this point assumptions must be made. An example: is the high school enrollment similar to the 15-19 age census category such that it is representative of the category? If it is felt that it is close enough, then a random sample of the student body would reflect the general population. If, however, the school is an all girls’ school, it certainly would not be representative of the population. A random sample here would certainly be a biased sample , completely under representing the male 15-19 population. In such a case, a random canvass of the zip code might be use to discover the location of sufficient 15-19 males. This however would be very time consuming, and therefore impractical. An alternative approach with its own bias would be to survey male 15-19 aged customers at the local McDonald’s.

Step 1: Determining the universe or population to which the sample will ultimately be projected. My suggestion is that it should be the 15-19 age group for the zip codes that best represents the school. In my case it is zip code 19151, a racially mixed area, but the public school is 99% African-American. As a result, any sample drawn just from the students will under-count the non- African-American population in the zip code. There are two ways to address this sample bias. One is to do a random canvass of the zip code to supplement a random sample drawn in the school. The second is to suggest that the universe represented by the sample will only be the African-American 15-19 age population. It is issues of this nature that make sampling and survey research such a difficult thing. If it were easier to do a satisfactory job, more companies would be doing it. My suggestion here is to make a best estimate of the African-American 15-19 age population. The 2000 census estimate for the 15-19 age group was 2315. The African-American percentage of the total population was 71.8%. Estimating a similar percentage for the 15-19 age group, the estimate of the African-American 15-19 age population is 2315 x .718 or 1662 persons.

Step2: It would be a good idea to get the school administration’s help when drawing a sample. Ask for a list of the names of all the students in some pre-defined order, for example by class, and within class, by gender, and within gender, alphabetically. In my example, the list would contain the approximately 600 students. As can be seen, this does not come close to the 1662 estimate we created for the 15-19 age group. First, the 15-19 age group actually covers 5 years, so the school population at best should be 80% of the 15-19 age group. An even bigger bias is the fact that many families in this economically middle class neighborhood, chose to send their children to private schools or to some other public school. Dealing with these biases is beyond the scope of this project, and will just be inherent within the data. Anyone attempting to do a similar project will have to make similar compromises.

If you chose to do a systematic sample of size 60, or 1 in 10 as in my example, arrange the student population in a pre-defined order. Since I want every 10 th student, this becomes the skip ratio, and every 10 th student is chosen, after choosing the first student. The first student is chosen by creating a random number between 1 and 10 inclusively, which means that any number from 1 to 10 has an equal chance of being chosen. If the random number is 6, then the sample will consist of the 6 th , 16 th , 26 th , 36th, etc. students on the list. This will result in a sample of 60 students. These can then be distributed to the four students in the project group however they deem fit. The idea is to sample this exact group of students.

Step3: Our project group nw becomes a team of four surveyors.

As the team begins to collect data they may find resistance among the students to be surveyed. If after a few attempts to get cooperation, a student still refuses to fill out a survey, then an alternate name should be drawn from the school population list. It should be done in this order. Pick a student either one before or one after the non-cooperating student. This gives two more chances to get cooperation for this single survey entry. If after exhausting the original student to be surveyed and the two students on either side, go to the next outer two students and seek cooperation from one of these. In total, this allows five opportunities to solicit cooperation.

An example of this is as follows. If the 56 th student was originally chosen but refuses, student 55 or 57 could replace student 56. If all three refuse, students 54 or 58 could be replacements. If all five refuse, randomly chose another student of the same grade and gender. Continue until cooperation is reached.

Attempt to get the best cooperation possible.

In the final unit, students will analyze the sample survey data that have been collected. They will create sample to population projection factors to be used to forecast population estimates of the product class and brand sales, and brand shares of the product class. Estimates of the standard errors of the population projections will be made. Confidence intervals will be determined. Final estimates of the brands sales, prices, and brand shares can be presented to the entire class as the students complete the unit.

The first step in Unit 3, students enter the survey data into a spreadsheet. Microsoft Excel is probably the best available option. Once the data are in the spreadsheet, statistical measures can be calculated. These will include totals, means, and standard deviations for all of the data. Data may also be projected to population estimates including item sales and dollar values of these sales. Correlations between various items can be calculated as well. Finally, a proposed “special” could be developed that could be presented to the McDonald’s manager as a possible item package to offer to customers. This might consist of two or three items that are purchased together in great frequency.

C:\Questionnaire.xls contains a suggested Excel spreadsheet format in the sheet named Analysis, but you should create one that fits your particular survey. A TI- 83 or greater calculator can be used to create sums, means and standard deviations quite easily as well. The view shown here is from a TI -84, but the functions are the same. Data are entered using the STAT key and others as shown. The data enter here was 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 20. The mean is 6.71, the sum is 47, and the standard deviation of a sample is 6.57. By using the down arrow key, the minimum, first quartile, median , third quartile, and maximum can also be see.

Regardless of whether the students use Excel or a calculator, the data needs to be formatted into a useable worksheet so that sums of the answers for each question can be easily calculated. The spreadsheet I have provided is not sufficient for a full survey, since it only shows example data from two questionnaires. Students need to think about how best to layout their own data and then calculate the sums, means, and standard deviations of their sample data. Both Excel and the TI calculators use the following formula for the standard deviation.

This refers to taking the square root of the value underneath the symbol, n is the number of surveys, x refers to each data item for a given question, and ! means to sum all of the x or x 2 values.

The following is the Excel description for correlation and covariance.

Correlation analysis tool and formulas

This analysis tool and its formulas measure the relationship between two data sets that are scaled to be independent of the unit of measurement. The population correlation calculation returns the covariance of two data sets divided by the product of their standard deviations:

Covariance is a measure of the relationship between two ranges of data.

You can use the Covariance and Correlation tools to determine whether two ranges of data move together — that is, whether large values of one set are associated with large values of the other (positive covariance), whether small values of one set are associated with large values of the other (negative covariance), or whether values in both sets are unrelated (covariance near zero).

The TI-83 produces a correlation each time a regression equation is calculated between two variables . If the first variable is stored in L1 and the second in L2 and then the STAT CALC function 4:LinReg(ax+b) is executed, the y=ax+b equation is generated, showing the a and b coefficients. If before the regression is executed, the DiagnosticOn is executed, both r and r 2 will be shown in addition to the equation.

The TI-84 images below illustrate the entry of a small amount of data into L1 and L2. Then a linear regression equation is generated, showing the a and b coefficients. Then the DiagnosticOn is executed, and the regression is executed a second time showing the correlation coefficient r and r 2 in addition to the regression equation. Note: The default condition in the TI calculators is to be in DiagnosticOff.

In the event that two or more items have a correlation of r 2 = .5 or more, there is some relationship between the purchase of one with the other. The students should calculate correlations between all of the items. If the survey has 10 items, 45 correlations would result, or 10 C 2 , (10 choose 2). The students might want to create a product grouping of correlated items to present to the McDonalds store for consideration as a reward for their fine survey work.

The next step in Unit 3 is to create population totals. If the systematic sample is 1 in 10, then the individual items sales totals would be multiplied by a projection factor of 10 to reach the school population estimates. A further projection could be done to the zip code population by creating a projection factor of the ratio of the zip code 15-19 population to the sample size. This projection, as mentioned earlier may have one or more large biases, but could still be done as part of the project.

Finally, a presentation of the survey finding should be prepared. It should include descriptions of every step taken and rationale for each step. It should include a history of the decision making process to arrive at a set of products to survey, the selection of a geographic area, an overview of the demographics of the geographic area, the process used to select a sample, the creation of a survey document, anecdotal tales of the data collection process, examples of completed survey forms, a description of the data entry and analysis steps, final sales units and dollar estimates calculated from the sample data, comparisons of price and sales volumes between various items surveyed, and any conclusions that the students feel would be a good business practice for the retailer to introduce.

The outcome or result; the section of the final report that contains the interpretation of the data in light of the research objectives.

Correlation analysis

Analysis of the degree to which changes in one variable are associated with changes in another.

Demographics

Description of the vital statistics or objective and quantifiable characteristics of an audience or population. Demographic designators include age, marital status, income, family size, occupation, and personal or household characteristics such as age, sex, income, or educational level.

The process of ascertaining that questionnaires were filled out properly, completely and accurately.

Errors in measurement

We can think about errors in measurements this way:

measured value = true value + bias + random error

A measurement process has bias if it systematically overstates or understates the true value of the property it measures. A measurement process has random error if repeated measurements on the same individual give different results. If the random error is small, we say the measurement is reliable.

Errors in sampling

Sampling errors are errors caused by the act of taking a sample. They cause sample results to be different from the results of a census. Random sampling error is the deviation between the sample statistic and the population parameter caused by chance in selecting a random sample. The margin of error in a confidence statement includes only random sampling error. Nonsampling errors are errors not related to the act of selecting a sample from the population. They can be present even in a census.

A numerical value obtained from a statistical sample and assigned to the population parameter.

Expected value

The mean of a probability distribution. It is the value of the probability distribution we would expect in the long run.

Managing bias and variability

To reduce bias, use random sampling. When we start with a list of the entire population, simple random sampling produces unbiased estimates— the values of a statistic computed from an SRS neither consistently overestimate nor consistently underestimate the value of the population parameter.

To reduce the variability of an SRS, use a larger sample. You can make the variability as small as you want by taking a large enough sample.

Total of all individuals or organizations that represent potential buyers.

The process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives.

Marketing research

The planning, collection, and analysis of data relevant to marketing decision making, and the communication of the results of this analysis to management.

Median and mean of a density curve

The median of a density curve is the equal-areas point, the point that divides the area under the curve in half.

The mean of a density curve is the balance point, at which the curve would balance if made of solid material.

The median and mean are the same for a symmetric density curve.

They both lie at the center of the curve. The mean of a skewed curve is pulled away from the median in the direction of the long tail.

Methodology

The research procedures used; the section of the final report in which the researcher outlines the approach used in the research, including the method of recruiting participants, the types of questions used, and so on. Methodology can also mean the approach a moderator uses to conduct focus groups.

Nonprobability sample

Subset of a population in which little or no attempt is made to ensure a representative cross section.

Occurrences which do not have an equal probability of occurring; not mathematically predictable on the basis of the classical theory of probability.

Nonresponse bias

Error that results from a systematic difference between those who do and do not respond to the measurement instrument.

Nonsampling error

All the sources of bias or inaccuracy in a study besides sampling error. Examples: leading by the interviewer, recording/data entry errors.

The information to be developed from a study to serve the project’s purpose.

Observation

The value that the variable assumes for a single unit of the sample.

Participant

A person included in a focus group, survey or study. Also called respondent, unit, subject, experimental unit or unit of analysis.

The collection of all objects that are of interest to the statistician. The elements of a population may be called units or subjects. Also known as the universe.

Primary research

Conducting research to collect new data to solve a marketing information need. Probability sample

A sample in which every unit has an equal (nonzero) and known probability of being selected. Sometimes called a random sample.

An estimate, based on assumptions about future trends in births, deaths, and migration, of a demographic characteristic such as population or number of households. Forecasts and projections are terms that are often used interchangeably.

Questionnaire

A set of questions designed to generate data necessary for accomplishing the objectives of the research project.

Random sampling

A sample in which each unit has an equal and independent chance of selection. Also known as probability sample .

Response bias

Error that results from the tendency of people to answer a question falsely, through deliberate misrepresentation or unconscious falsification.

A subset of the population of interest selected for a research study. It is a finite portion that is used to study the characteristics of concern in the population

Sample population

The population from which the sample is obtained.

The method of selecting a specified portion, called a sample, from a population, from which information concerning the whole can be inferred.

Sampling error

The estimated inaccuracy of the results of a study when a population sample is used to explain behavior of the total population.

Short census form

U.S. Census Bureau questionnaire that all Americans answer every 10 years. Standard deviation

The positive square root of average squared distance of the population or sample values from the mean. It is the most widely accepted measure of dispersion.

Statistical significance

An observed effect so large that it would rarely occur by chance is called statistically significant.

Survey objectives

The decision-making information sought through the questionnaire.

Survey research

Research in which an interviewer interacts with respondents to obtain facts, opinions and attitudes.

Systematic sample

A procedure that selects every Nth unit (skip interval) of a population until the desired sample size is reached. The starting point should be a random position.

Under-coverage

Under-coverage occurs when some groups in the population are left out of the process of choosing the sample.

The set of all the units from which a sample is drawn. Also called the population. Variable

Any characteristic that can be measured on each unit of the population.

Registered trademark of the U.S. Postal Service; a five-digit or nine-digit code identifying regions in the United States.

ZIP code demographics

The demographic characteristics of a population living in a particular ZIP code.

Marketing to High School Students: 4 Strategies That Make An Impact

As a young and ever-shifting consumer segment, high school students present a moving target for marketers. For your high school marketing campaign to be successful, you need to place their brand where it successfully interrupts their daily lives and has a meaningful impact on them. So where should your brand focus their efforts?

In-school media boards

As schools further return to in-person learning, high school students spend the majority of their time within their school environments, making in-school out-of-home advertising an incredibly effective way of placing your brand’s front-and-center in their daily lives. 

Research shows that Gen Z actually finds out-of-home advertising to be “relaxing” in comparison with the digital ads they’re accustomed to. Our network of media boards are placed strategically in high schools nationwide at eye-level in order to garner maximum exposure for your brand.

As digital natives, high school students today view their social media profiles as an extension of who they are. Their profiles are both curated and authentic, and on average, they spend 3 hours a day engaging with social media.

In 2021, the most-used social media platforms by teens are TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. Most teen students carry their phones with them all the time—making mobile targeting one of the easiest and most effective ways to target high school students. According to Refuel Agency’s Gen Z Explorer Series™ , 91% of Gen Z report watching online videos every day, 84% report that they watch video streaming services, and Gen Z is 64% more likely to stream videos on their smartphones. Gen Z is partial to specifically short-form videos over long form ones. Gen Z spends more time on YouTube than on Netflix or any other streaming platforms, and most of Gen Z’s favorite influencers are from YouTube, Vine, TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram stories.

So what’s the takeaway? Gen Z loves video content—but not just any video content. They gravitate towards influencers, whose content seems authentic and relatable, like Liza Koshy (18.7M YouTube followers) and Emma Chamberlain (9.1M YouTube followers). Brands can take a page from their books and create video content that makes Gen Z feel more like collaborators than consumers — encouraging user-generated content, filming with lo-fi aesthetics, and being subtle with branding.

3. Influence them at their price point

In-school promotions + sampling

High school students, in particular, are motivated by brands that can influence them at their price point. Free samples and targeted discounts are particularly persuasive to a target demographic that has not yet entered the workforce. Additionally, in-school sampling campaigns are effective because students are being targeted in an environment that they trust, their school.  An example of this success lies in our “Redzone” sampling campaign with Old Spice . Through Refuel, Old Spice created a multi-year sampling campaign to increase their brand awareness among high school boys. The campaign successfully deployed across 10,000 high schools nationwide and results in an 81% increase in Old Spice purchases.

4. Speak to their experiences

High school students, more so than older generations, expect for brands to be relatable and to merge seamlessly with their lives. They grew up with the Internet and smartphones, after all, so they’re used to branded content being infused into their daily lives. Given this, your brand has the opportunity to run meaningful campaigns that speak to the experiences of high school students. 

Especially as students head back to their schools, brands should address the toll that COVID-19 has taken on them, their families, and their friends. “The best way brands can prepare teens for their return to school is by helping them navigate their new realities through human-centered campaigns,” says digital marketer Baidhurya Mani. “They should focus on empathizing with students by sharing their values and issues that matter to them.”

Don’t forget about marketing to parents of high school students

When you’re strategizing ways to market to high school students, don’t forget two of the most important people in their lives: their parents. Teens living at home still have enormous influence over their parents’ spending decisions, boosting overall teen buying power from $95.7B total teen income to $265.6B total teen spending including parents. 

When it comes to marketing to parents of high school students, one key difference is that while high school students are largely focused on the present, parents are concerned more with their childrens’ futures. Parents are concerned about what their children will do with their lives, when, and how. Marketing VP Mitch Harad adds that, “This overarching pain point for parents of high school students has only been magnified during COVID-19. Brands wanting to connect with returning high school students should address the pain point by communicating messages of safety about the future.” 

And remember that you want to make a good impression on the parents of your target audience. Advertisements that may promote distorted body image or that may encourage poor choices or behavior from teens will not make a good impression on their parents. You should also ensure that the research you choose to undertake is feasible in terms of resources, time, effort, and complexity. While it may be tempting to choose an extremely challenging research question, know the sweet spot between being comfortable enough to conduct the research, and challenging yourself as a student of economics.

You need to have a keen eye for cause-effect as well as a mature perspective on policy in the public sphere before you conduct research.

The components are broken into manageable chunks, letting your high schoolers tackle the project in parts. By the end, they will produce a well-researched essay highlighting their career. 
  • 3-Career Research Report: In this project , students choose three careers to focus on and create a written report. They learn MLA documentation, write business letters to organizations, take notes, and go through the formal writing process. This project has everything your students need to develop their career research reports with a rubric, parent letter, works cited page instructions, and more.
  • STEM Careers Research Poster and Brochure: Students conduct comprehensive research in this project , using what they learn to create several items showing their knowledge. They research and learn about a specific career and make a posterboard presentation. Then they can create a brochure, present their findings to the class, and answer any questions that classmates and others may ask.
  • Job Research Project: In this project , students first do research on any career they want. They must look up the various requirements, necessary skills, salary, and other details about the profession. They end with a thorough essay about their career, hopefully armed with the knowledge to help them in the future. The project is customizable to adapt to multiple grades, so your high school students will all benefit from the project. 

Career Research Projects – Digital Presentations

Fusing technology and research, these projects allow kids to show their knowledge through technology. Students create digital presentations and share them with the class using PowerPoint, Google Slides, and other formats.

  • Career Research Project: This project works with many grades, and teachers can customize it to fit their students’ levels. They use PowerPoint to make a comprehensive slide show to demonstrate their knowledge. It breaks down career research into ten slides (you can add more as needed), and students will have a solid understanding of their future career path by the end of the assignment.

It differs from other projects on the list because it weaves college research into the assignment, showing students the connection between education and careers. With 22 slides to complete, students will have an in-depth understanding of their chosen careers and how to navigate school and plan for future success.
  • Career Exploration Project: This project is unique as it takes a realistic approach to career exploration, requiring students to find the pros and cons of three potential careers. They see that every job has perks and drawbacks, and part of pursuing a specific one comes down to their personal preference. The project includes a detailed outline, so students know precisely what to research and have on each slide of their digital presentation. Presenting their findings is a significant part of their grade, which helps strengthen their accountability, quality of work, and public speaking skills.
  • Life Skills Career Research Project: This project is an excellent blend of hands-on production and digital skill-building, letting students show their findings in multiple formats. They research a career, finding things like education/training requirements, job responsibilities, drawbacks, benefits, opportunities for advancement, specific places of employment, and salaries. 1. memorial sloan kettering human oncology and pathogenesis program.

Duration: Eight weeks (June 27 – August 22)

Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) is one of the most well-known cancer centers in the world. The Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) at MSK hosts a Summer Student Program for students to conduct independent research projects while participating in extracurricular activities, training, and other opportunities.  

During the eight-week program, participants work with a mentor who will act as a supervisor to help them develop their research skills. Additionally, students have the opportunity to complete an independent research project that aligns with their mentor’s work. All participants will present their projects at a poster session at the end of the summer.

To participate, you must have completed at least 9th grade by June 2024, be at least 14 years old by June 27, have a 3.5 GPA in science subjects, and submit two letters of recommendation. This is a paid opportunity—participants will receive a stipend. 

2. Rockefeller University Summer Science Research Program  

Application Deadline: January 5 

Duration: Seven weeks (June 24 – August 8) 

The Rockefeller University Summer Science Research Program allows high school students to conduct real, innovative research over seven weeks through the renowned Rockefeller University, under the guidance of leading scientists. 

SSRP scholars will be able to design and conduct their own research project as part of a themed research track, which is modeled after a Rockefeller research topic and/or technique, with the help of scientist mentors from the Rockefeller community. Most of the research will be conducted in the RockEDU Laboratory—a 3,000-square-foot research space specifically dedicated to developing biomedical research skills.

Students must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program to participate.  

3. Lumiere Research Scholar Program

Application Deadline : Varies by cohort. Main summer deadlines are March 15, April 15, and May 15

Location:  Remote — you can participate in this program from anywhere in the world!

Duration: Options range from 12 weeks to 1 year

Founded by Harvard & Oxford researchers, the Lumiere Research Scholar Program is a rigorous research program tailored for high school students. The program pairs high-school students with PhD mentors to work 1-on-1 on an independent research project . At the end of the 12-week program, you’ll have written an independent research paper! You can choose research topics from subjects such as medicine, computer science, psychology, physics, economics, data science, business, engineering, biology, and international relations.

This program is designed to accommodate your schedule—you can participate in the summer, fall, winter, or spring, and the program is also conducted fully remotely. While you must be currently enrolled in high school and demonstrate high academic achievement (most students have an unweighted GPA of 3.3), no previous knowledge of your field of interest is required. The cost of the program ranges from $2,800 to $8,900, but financial aid is available.

4. Research Science Institute (RSI)

Location: Cambridge, MA

Duration: Five weeks (June 23 – August 3) 

The prestigious RSI, which takes place at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) annually, brings together 100 of the world’s top high school students. The free program blends on-campus coursework with off-campus science and technology research. 

Participants complete individual research projects while receiving mentorship from experienced scientists and researchers, and present their findings through oral and written reports in a conference-style setting at the end of the program. 

5. NYU Tandon – Applied Research Innovations in Science and Engineering (ARISE)

Application Deadline: March 6

Duration: 10  weeks (June 3 – August 9)

Open to New York City high school students who will complete 10th or 11th grade in June 2024, the ARISE program provides access to college-level workshops and lab research across fields like bio, molecular, and chemical engineering, robotics, computer science, and AI.

Over the course of 10 weeks—four virtual and six in person—participants will receive guidance from graduate or postdoctoral students at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. 

6. Simons Summer Research Program

Application Deadline: February 7

Location: Stony Brook, NY

Duration: Five weeks (July 1 – August 9) 

During Stony Brook ’s Simons Summer Research Program, high school students conduct hands-on research in areas like science, math, and engineering while working with faculty mentors. Simons Fellows have the opportunity to join real research teams and learn about laboratory equipment and techniques. They also attend weekly faculty research talks and participate in special workshops, tours, and events. 

At the closing poster symposium, students will receive a stipend for their participation. To apply, you must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program and currently be in your junior year. 

7. SPARK Summer Mentorship Program

Location: Greater Seattle area

Duration: 8-10 weeks 

SPARK is a summer mentorship program that pairs high-achieving and highly motivated high schoolers with industry experts, university professors, and mentors to conduct research on customers and financial markets. The program is only open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.  

8. MDI Biological Laboratory – Biomedical Bootcamp 2024

Application Deadline: March 18 

Location: Bar Harbor, ME

Duration: One week (July 15 – 19) 

In this bootcamp, students will receive a hands-on introduction to biomedical research at MDI Biological Laboratory. Participants will learn essential scientific skills such as experimental design and hypothesis testing, cutting-edge laboratory techniques, data analysis, bioinformatics, and scientific communication. 

During the program, scientists and bioentrepreneurs at the lab will help participants explore scientific ethics at large, as well as career paths in biomedicine, research, and entrepreneurship in Maine and beyond.

Participants must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program and must be entering their junior or senior year in September 2024, or graduating in June 2024. 

9. Boston University – Research in Science & Engineering (RISE) Internship  

Application Deadline: February 14  

Location: Boston, MA

Duration: Six weeks (June 30 – August 9)  

RISE is a six-week program for rising seniors with an interest in pursuing a major and/or career in STEM. There are a multitude of tracks available, in areas such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, and neuroscience. In each track, students conduct research under the mentorship of Boston University faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or graduate students. They will also attend weekly workshops with their peers. 

10. The Wistar Institute – High School Program in Biomedical Research

Application Deadline: March 31 

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Duration: Four weeks (July 15 – August 8) 

A leading biomedical research organization, The Wistar Institute is an ideal setting for students to learn research skills. Participants will complete their own research project while being trained in a principal investigator’s laboratory. They’ll also attend seminars, receive mentorship, and deliver a final presentation about their work.

Students are expected to participate Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Absences of more than two consecutive days cannot be accommodated. Students will receive a stipend of $1,000 upon completion of the program, to compensate for commuting costs or other personal expenses accrued during the program. 

11. California Academy of Sciences – Careers in Science (CiS) Intern Program

Location: San Francisco, CA

Duration: Multi-year, year-round participation (after school and on weekends)

This long term program gives San Francisco students from communities that are underrepresented in STEM the opportunity to learn about the world of science and sustainability. Students receive mentorship, develop career skills, and more—all while getting paid for their work. Students also attend workshops and conferences throughout the course of the program. 

12. NASA OSTEM Internship

NASA offers a variety of internships for high school students across its numerous campuses. Interns gain real-world work experience by working side by side with research scientists and engineers, which will strengthen their resume and help prepare them for their eventual careers. All participants must be at least 16 years old and enrolled in high school full time.

13. New-York Historical Society Student Historian Internship Program

Application Deadline: April 7

Duration: July 9 – August 15

Not all research is conducted in STEM subjects! Developed for students interested in history, the New-York Historical Society’s Student Historian Program gives participants the opportunity to conduct research on a history topic—2024’s theme is Our Composite Nation: Frederick Douglass’ America . During the program, participants will work with historian mentors, visit history archives around New York City, lead gallery tours, and develop their historical thinking, communication, and digital media skills.

Applicants must be entering grades 10, 11, or 12, and live in the New York City metro area. This opportunity is unpaid for most participants, but some interns with demonstrated financial need can potentially receive a stipend.

14. Adler Planetarium Summer High School Internship  

Application Deadline: March 1

Location: Chicago, IL

Duration: Six weeks (July 8 – August 14)

During this summer internship program, students will learn about the Adler Planetarium and the career opportunities within it and planetariums and museums in general, in areas ranging from Visitor Experience and Learning to Research. Students will also get the chance to see how research gets translated into a museum experience. 

15. Zuckerman Institute Brain Research Apprenticeships in New York at Columbia University (BRAINYAC)

Duration: Eight weeks  

BRAINYAC participants receive the rare opportunity to work on research in a lab at Columbia University , one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, as high school students, which results in a stronger, more comprehensive understanding of how scientific discovery happens. They connect with real scientists, acquire essential research and laboratory skills, and learn about advances in neuroscience research. 

In order to apply, you must be in 10th or 11th grade and must be nominated by one of the program’s partners—S-PREP, Lang Youth Medical, Double Discovery Center, Columbia Secondary School, or BioBus.  

16. Brookfield Zoo King Conservation Science Scholars Program

Interactive workshops, fun activities, research, and community-based projects are at the core of this exciting internship. It’s an excellent opportunity for students who love animals and also want to gain research skills in the domains of zoology, environmental science, and conservation. 

As a King Scholar, you’ll learn about different topics through Foundation Courses, such as Diversity Awareness and Introduction to Conservation, all while networking with others and preparing for college and an eventual career in a related field. After one year of participation, you’ll be invited to apply for scholarships and paid positions at the zoo. 

17. The Science Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) at the American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the most iconic and fascinating places in New York City. Its Science Research Mentoring Program is an amazing opportunity for NYC high school students to conduct a yearlong research project with Museum scientists. 

Students in SRMP get paid to learn how scientific research is conducted. Depending on their topic of study, students can learn a variety of different research skills, like working with DNA in the lab, analyzing data from space-based telescopes, reading scientific articles, and learning to code and analyze data in Python, R, and other programming languages. 

18. Anson L. Clark Scholars Program

Location: Lubbock, TX

Duration: Seven weeks (June 16 – August 1) 

Through the Anson L. Clark Scholar Program, an intensive seven-week summer research program for twelve highly qualified high school juniors and seniors, students will gain hands-on experience with practical research alongside experienced and knowledgeable faculty at Texas Tech University .

Students can choose to participate in research in one field from a broad variety of options, including cell and molecular biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, history, and more! 

To apply, students must complete an online application that includes short essays, high school transcripts, test scores (at least a PSAT if no others are available), three recommendations (at least two from teachers), and a list of the student’s top five activities.

19. UChicago Data Science Institute Summer Lab Program  

Application Deadline: January 16 

Duration: Eight weeks (June 10 – August 2)

The Data Science Institute Summer Lab Program is an immersive eight-week paid summer research program at the University of Chicago . During the program, high school and undergraduate students are paired with a data science mentor, whose expertise could be in computer science, data science, social science, climate and energy policy, public policy, materials science, biomedical research, or another related field.

Participants will hone their research methodology, research practice, and teamwork skills. No prior research experience is required to apply. All participants will receive access to applied data science research, which they will use to craft a research project. The project findings will be presented in a video that will be shown at an end-of-summer symposium.

20. UT Austin College of Natural Sciences High School Research Academy

Application Deadline: March 24

Location: Austin, TX

Duration: Five weeks (June 10 – July 17) 

Through UT Austin ’s HSRA, high school students participate in interdisciplinary research projects being conducted by active College of Natural Sciences laboratories in fields such as biochemistry, biology, environmental science, genetics, neuroscience, genome engineering, data analytics, ecology, and more. 

There is a scholarship fund for underserved groups, so some stipends and free tuition scholarships may be available to students with demonstrated financial need. 

21. Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience – Summer Research Internship

Location: Jupiter, FL

Duration: Six weeks (June 17 – July 26) 

The MPFI Summer Research Internship offers rising juniors and seniors an immersive laboratory experience where they can learn from seasoned researchers. The program is designed specifically for students with an interest in brain structure, function and development, and the advanced imaging techniques and technologies used in neuroscience. 

Program participants will participate in research projects alongside MPFI scientists, prepare a written scientific abstract based on their research project, and deliver a short presentation at the end of the summer. Research tracks include neuroscience, scientific computer programming, and mechanical engineering as it relates to neuroscience.

Applicants must be entering their junior or senior years in a Palm Beach or Martin County high school, be residents of one of those two counties, and be at least 16 by the beginning of the internship. Interns will be paid at a rate of $12.50 per hour.

22. Lincoln Park Zoo Malott Family Zoo Intern Program

Application Deadline: March 11 

Duration: Seven weeks (June 24 – August 9) 

During this paid seven-week program, high school students learn how to educate others about animal and conservation sciences while crafting digital messages to engage audiences. The program culminates in a final project. Throughout the internship, students meet with researchers and the Animal Care staff to explore careers in the animal science and conservation fields. 

Applicants must be Chicago residents between the ages of 15-18, and must be entering grades 10-12 or their freshman year of college by the start of the internship.

23. The Scripps Research High School Internship Program  

Application Deadline: April 19

Location: La Jolla, CA

Duration: Seven weeks  

The Scripps Research Institute’s La Jolla, California headquarters is proud to offer a seven-week hands-on research experience for San Diego County high schoolers. The program is specially designed to expose students to careers in the biological and chemical sciences, to provide hands-on laboratory experience, and to motivate and prepare students for continuing education in STEM. 

Because Scripps is committed to increasing the number of students from underrepresented communities in STEM college programs, a special emphasis is placed on identifying and recruiting students who are from groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences. All students will receive a $4,760 stipend.

24. QuarkNet Summer Research Program  

Application Deadline: January 31

Location: DuPage County, IL

Duration: Seven weeks (June 17 – August 2) 

High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a strong interest in STEM have a unique opportunity to work with scientists on research projects during this paid seven-week program at the prestigious Fermilab, located just outside of Chicago near Batavia, IL.

Interns are encouraged to indicate areas in which they have a particular interest, although research projects vary yearly based on the work ongoing at the lab. Broadly speaking, Fermilab’s focus is on particle physics.

Required application materials include a questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, and an essay. To apply, students must have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status and must provide evidence of identity and eligibility to work in the United States. Participants will be paid at a rate of $17.20 per hour.

25. RISE Environmentor Internship

Location: Far Rockaway, NY

Duration: Six weeks (July 1 – August 15)

The Environmentor Internship offers a great opportunity for 9th through 11th graders who live or attend school near the Rockaway Peninsula to gain firsthand research experience. Participants are mentored by scientists from local universities and research institutions as they work on projects focused on the Rockaway shoreline. Past research topics have included sea turtle strandings, octopus behavior, mussel denitrification, and dolphin fin morphology.

Students will also take part in water safety courses, receive CPR training, and explore on-water activities like kayaking and surfing. Students receive up to a $1,200 stipend, as well as community service hours for their participation in the program.

26. Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR)

Location: Stanford, CA

Duration: Eight weeks (June 10 – August 1)

Students in this summer program are given the chance to perform research on a medically oriented project and work side by side with Stanford University students, researchers, and faculty. Students can choose from eight areas of research, including topics like immunology, cancer biology, and bioinformatics, which are all designed to increase their interest in the biological sciences and provide a deeper understanding of how scientific research is conducted.

The program is open to current high school juniors and seniors. Students will receive a minimum $500 stipend for their participation in the program.

27. Secondary Student Training Program

Location: Iowa City, IA

Duration: June 19 – July 26

High schoolers in grades 10 and 11 can take part in an immersive research experience, which will allow them to explore their interests, enhance their academic skills, and build relationships with their peers during this research-focused summer program.

Participants can choose from a multitude of research areas, ranging from biology to industrial and systems engineering to religious studies. The program culminates with students creating and presenting a poster of their findings. All participants will live on the University of Iowa ‘s campus for the duration of the program, and have access to all of the university’s libraries, study areas, and computer facilities.

Although this program is quite expensive, with a fee of $7,500, financial aid is available to cover up to 95% of the cost.

28. Young Scholars Summer STEMM Research Program

Location: Urbana, IL

Duration: Six weeks (June 20 – August 2)

This program, offered by the prestigious Grainger College of Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) , allows students to gain hands-on research experience in fields such as cancer immunology, AI, physics, quantum mechanics, and electrical engineering. They will also build valuable general life skills by participating in seminars on topics ranging from the college admission process to how to communicate scientifically.

The program is open to rising 10th through 12th graders from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

29. Summer Science Program (SSP)

Duration: Varies depending on location and field of focus

Students in the SSP get the chance to work in small teams on a real research project and gain firsthand experience taking and analyzing data. Research opportunities are offered in three fields—astrophysics, biochemistry, and genomics—and are held at a variety of institutions, including University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , Georgetown University , Purdue University , and New Mexico State University .

The program is open to high school juniors, although a small number of exceptional sophomores have attended the program. You must be between 15-19 to participate, and have completed prerequisite coursework, which varies by field. Financial aid is available for this program.

30. The Jackson Laboratory Summer Student Program

Students immerse themselves in genetics and genomics research while learning about laboratory discovery and scientific communication, as well as building professional skills. Over the course of the 10-week program, students work with a mentor to develop a research project, implement their plan, analyze their data, and report their results.

This prestigious program is competitive. Just 40 students are selected to participate annually. Participants receive a $6,500 stipend and have their room, board, and travel expenses covered.

31. Fred Hutch Summer High School Internship Program

Location: Seattle, WA

Duration: Eight weeks (June 24 – August 16) 

This full-time, paid internship opportunity offers students a chance to immerse themselves in activities at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, one of the top cancer research centers in the world. The program begins with two weeks of laboratory training and is followed by six weeks of mentored activities, research seminars, workshops focused on college and careers, and social activities.

The program is open to high schoolers entering their senior year with a strong interest in science and high academic achievement, and is specifically aimed at students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical science. Interns receive a stipend upon successful completion of the program.

Define your area of interest .

Before you start looking for opportunities, narrow your area of interest a bit, whether it’s cancer, engineering, computer science, neuroscience, or something else entirely. Also bear in mind that while there may be more STEM opportunities available for high school students, research isn’t limited to these fields—research is also a key component of the social sciences, humanities, and other non-STEM fields.

Remember: when pitching your idea, don’t make it too niche—this will make it more difficult to find a fit and market your skills to labs. 

Cast a Wide Net 

Research opportunities are hard to secure, especially when you’re a young student, so you need to be persistent. You may need to write a hundred emails, but if you put in the effort and cast a wide net, you’ll vastly improve your chances of landing a great opportunity. 

Try not to be too picky, either. Of course, you shouldn’t just accept any offer , especially if it doesn’t appeal to you. But even if the opportunity doesn’t align perfectly with your skills and interests, it can still be a great chance to gain experience and make you a better candidate for future experiences.

Generally speaking, there are four tiers of extracurricular activities that colleges think about when reviewing applicants’ activities. Selective, competitive, and prestigious activities are often found in the top tiers, Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 2 is similar, but is usually reserved for activities that are less exceptional than those in Tier 1. Tiers 3 and 4 are reserved for more common extracurricular achievements, such as holding school leadership positions or being a member of a debate team.
