Current cross-course collaborations include filmmaking, photography, illustration and popular music.

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. The MA in Creative Writing offers the opportunity to develop your skills in creative writing within the context of a School of English with a long and distinguished history in creative writing. The course appeals both to those who wish to deepen and broaden their creative writing practice, and to those who are working towards a single publishable piece of work.

With expert guidance from teaching staff who are actively engaged in producing and publishing creative writing, you will engage with a wide variety of literary genres, including poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. You will also have the chance to develop your literary and critical skills more broadly.

Throughout the course, you will be able to explore areas of personal interest and participate in workshops to hone your skills in diverse forms of writing.

You will also produce an independent research project, which can be dedicated to a single creative idea, or which might comprise a portfolio of your creative writing, according to your interests.

Learning and teaching

You’ll have weekly seminars or workshops in each module where you discuss the themes and issues arising from your reading and writing. You’ll have the opportunity to share your writing and receive feedback on work-in-progress. You’ll be able to enhance your learning by attending the wide range of seminars and talks by visiting speakers and creative writers that we arrange throughout the year.

However, independent study is a vital part of the degree, as it allows you to build your skills and explore your own ideas as an academic researcher and a creative writer.

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Assessment for this programme includes both creative and critical reflection on your creative practice. Modules are assessed either by a combination of these equivalent to 4,000 words, or by a single essay of around 4,000 words. While formal assessment tends to take place at the end of the module, during term you may also be expected to submit work in progress in order to gain feedback, or give presentations in your seminars.

This course will equip you with advanced transferable skills which are valuable in a wide range of careers.

You’ll be a confident researcher who can work independently as well as within a team. You’ll be a strong communicator, both verbally and in writing, and be able to think critically and analytically. In addition, you’ll have a strong level of cultural and critical awareness, and you’ll be able to look at a situation from different points of view.

All of these qualities are attractive to employers across sectors, and you’ll be well equipped to pursue a career in a wide range of fields depending on your interests. These could include teaching, journalism, publishing, advertising, broadcasting and law. A bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) in English literature or Creative Writing, or a degree scheme that includes a significant proportion of English Literature or Creative Writing content, or a related subject. You will also submit a Creative Writing sample comprising approximately 1,000 words of prose or 3 pages of poetry (or a portfolio combining both genres). This gives us a chance to get to know some of the writing you have produced so far to help us determine suitability for this course. Applications from those with degrees in other subjects may be considered on an individual basis, along with the sample you will submit. We accept a range of international equivalent qualifications. Taught by internationally-renowned writers, this MA is designed to be as creative and practical as possible within the academic requirements of a postgraduate programme.

Our MA students are a diverse group, from recent graduates looking to enhance their professional qualifications in preparation for a career involving writing, to experienced writers aspiring to have their work published or those looking to explore their passion for writing later in life.

The Student Contract

About this course

This MA puts the emphasis on “creative,” giving you plenty of time to write and incorporating a creative element into every module. The course aims to develop your writing skills in either prose or poetry, as well as fostering your creative and critical reading and exploring key issues relating to the publishing business.

Individual modules help you to learn techniques from published works and put them into practice, and to bring your own work to a reading – and listening – public. Throughout, the focus is upon your development as a writer, and prose or poetry workshops, along with individual dissertation supervision, are designed to hone your writing skills in a supportive and stimulating critical environment.

Being a "writer" generally involves a mixed portfolio of skills and attributes, and this MA provides a foundation that extends beyond the writing itself. You will meet agents, publishers, and other professionals – alongside our internationally published staff team – in order to help you to reach your potential as a writer, and also negotiate your first steps towards getting your work out into the world.

Course Modules

You will study a variety of modules across your programme of study. The module details given below are subject to change and are the latest example of the curriculum available on this course of study.

You may studying the following modules throughout your degree.

In these sessions, you will study a wide range of published works to consider the ways in which writers engage their readers. You will then experiment with these techniques yourself.

Visiting professionals from the literary world, alongside course tutors, offer insight into the business of being a writer, and provide support as you undertake a creative project that could involve anything from editing an anthology to researching publication platforms, via arranging events or planning and delivering workshops.

You will choose between either Prose or Poetry and will study two Workshop modules (1 and 2) in your chosen area. These small group sessions focus upon the development of works in progress in a supportive and critical environment.

Building on the workshop modules, this provides one-to-one support as you complete a major piece of work in your chosen genre.

Alongside timetabled contact hours, full-time students should expect to spend 35 hours a week on guided independent work, reading and writing; part-time students should allow half of this.

The workshop modules are assessed mainly on creative work, alongside an initial proposal and a reflective commentary; Reading as a Writer and Writing as a Profession are assessed on a portfolio of creative and critical work; and the Dissertation is assessed purely on creative work.

Leeds Trinity Alumni Discount

Some Leeds Trinity graduates are eligible for a tuition fee discount on postgraduate courses of up to 50%, excluding PGCE Delivery Partner Model and Lead Partner Model, and Masters by Research courses. You will need to achieve a 2:2 or above in a Leeds Trinity undergraduate course to qualify.

If you require a Student Route Visa in order to study in the UK, then you must apply to us by Wednesday 31 July 2024. You must also meet all the conditions of your offer and present all supporting documentation required for the visa application no later than the end of June 2024. Part-time study is not available for international students on a Student Route Visa.

What happens next?

Our admissions team will acknowledge receipt of your application by email. Where applications are submitted but references are still in progress, admissions will wait for the reference(s) to be received and then will process it, and forward to the relevant Programme Leader within five days of receipt of the reference(s).

The Programme Leader will make a decision based on your application. You may be asked to provide a reference to demonstrate your academic and non-academic experiences, or you may be invited to attend an interview. If you are successful and made an offer, the conditions will be outlined in your offer letter. 

Applications will be acknowledged within five working days. Applicants will be contacted within 15 working days with a request for additional information, invite to an informal interview or an application decision.

Animations & Interaction

The Leeds Beckett University website occasionally uses animations to page elements and animated gifs to add impact to pages. Please note that browsers sometimes change how they operate, so please refer to your browser help files to find their latest information.

How do I turn off animations?

Chrome users will need to use browser extensions. Animation Policy from Google will help you set your own preferences.

Microsoft Edge

There is currently no way to disable animations within Microsoft Edge. Users of Edge (Chromium) browser can install the Chrome extensions above and use them.

Internet Explorer

To stop animations on a single page you can just press the 'Esc' key. This will stop the animation on that page. If you wish to restart the animations you need to refresh the page. To permanently disable the playing of animated GIF images, open Internet Options > Advanced tab. Under the Multimedia section, uncheck the Play animations in webpage check-box, click Apply and Exit and then restart your computer.

Type about:config in Firefox address bar and hit Enter to open Settings. Search for the image.animation_mode flag and change its value from Normal to None. Once you restart Firefox this will disable animations.

UCAS Tariff Points: 104 points required.

(Minimum 64 from two A Levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies.).

Access to HE Diploma

Scottish awards, irish leaving certificate, international baccalaureate.

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Selection Criteria

We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.

Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Your tuition fees cover the cost of registration, tuition, academic supervision, assessments and examinations.

The following are also included in the cost of your course:

  • 24/7 Library and student IT support
  • Free wifi via eduroam
  • Skills workshops and resources
  • Library membership, giving access to more than 500,000 printed, multimedia and digital resources
  • Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC,laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app
  • Loan of high-end media equipment to support your studies

In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.

Optional Costs

  • Travel, accommodation and subsistence for optional educational visits. The nature and cost of these visits will vary from year to year
  • Optional work experience, placements or study related to live brief projects may involve travel, you'll need to pay for any additional travel costs. For placements you'll be encouraged to make use of contacts in Leeds or your home town in order to minimise these costs

Other study-related expenses to consider:  materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.

As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

This list is not exhaustive, costs are approximate and will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees. If you choose to study via distance learning, you may not be able to access all of the facilities listed if you are not able to visit us on campus.

Leslie Silver is home to three lecture theatres and eight high-spec computer training rooms. It's also where you'll find our Sheila Silver Library, providing students and staff an effective and inspiring learning environment, as well as a range of support and resources to support your studies.

Our Woodhouse Gym is located directly above The Hive within the Students' Union. The gym offers a range of cardio equipment, free weights, machines and squat racks.

Alison Taft is a crime writer and the author of The Disappeared and The Runaway which are published under her pen name Ali Harper. She is Course Director for Creative Writing with a particular interest in the domestic thriller.

Carol Gelderman, former English professor and author known for her prolific writings, died March 8, 2024.

Carol Gelderman, an esteemed English professor at the University of New Orleans for more than three decades and the author of 10 books—including a biography of Henry Ford—died on March 8. She was 89.

After earning a doctorate from Northwestern University, Gelderman joined the University in 1972 and remained on the English faculty until her retirement in 2005. She was such a prolific and skilled writer that in 1993 she was named a Distinguished Professor, a prestigious title held by only five faculty members at any one time.  

Her 10 published books included two textbooks about business and professional writing. A passionate student of American politics, she analyzed presidential speech writing in “All the President’s Words: The Bully Pulpit and the Creation of the Virtual Presidency.” But Gelderman was best known for her biographies. A review of “Henry Ford: The Wayward Capitalist” made the cover of Business Week . Her biography of the writer Mary McCarthy, “Mary McCarthy: A Life,” was reviewed on the front page of the New York Times Book Review.    

She continued to write throughout her life. “A Free Man of Color and His Hotel: Race, Reconstruction, and the Role of the Federal Government,” was published in 2012 when she was 77. In it, she examined the life of James Wormley, a free Black man who owned and operated the most luxurious hotel in Washington, D.C., from the 1850s until the 1880s.

In his eulogy of Gelderman, former UNO provost, English professor and founder of the Creative Writing Workshop Rick Barton called her a “scholar and acclaimed writer, a cherished teacher, a caring colleague and a loyal friend.”

“Despite all the long hours of intellectual effort it took to research and write these amazingly dissimilar 10 books, Carol shined in other aspects of her life as well,” Barton said. “We all know university faculty who publish important books and articles but don’t bother to put the same effort into their teaching duties. Not Carol Gelderman. She was as devoted a teacher as she was a scholar.”

Before receiving master’s and doctoral degrees from Northwestern, Gelderman worked for the American Embassy in London for a year and in public television in Chicago, conducting on-air interviews of visiting VIPs for a show called “Profile Chicago.” In addition to her 10 books, she wrote dozens of articles on topics as varied as theatre, biography, politics and mutual funds.

“Carol Gelderman was a vivacious, gregarious and affable person. She had friends all over New Orleans,” Barton said. “Carol was beloved by so many of us because she never practiced self-aggrandizement. She was a literary star, but you’d never learn about that from her.”

Colleagues and friends are planning to hold a memorial for Gelderman on UNO’s campus. Those details are incomplete.

American Academy of Arts and Letters honors TU professor

The American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced that Presidential Professor of English & Creative Writing Boris Dralyuk is a recipient of a 2024 Arts and Letters Award. This prize is given annually to eight writers in any genre to honor and encourage their creative work. It follows Dralyuk’s 2023 National Book Critics Circle’s Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize for his work on “Grey Bees.”  

“We are proud of Boris’ ongoing accomplishments and deserved recognition. Our students benefit immensely from having access to faculty who are honored on a national and global level,” said TU President Brad R. Carson. “The University of Tulsa is committed to supporting and celebrating the best talent and teachers.”  

An internationally respected poet, translator, and critic, Dralyuk took up his current position in The University of Tulsa’s Kendall College of Arts & Sciences in August 2022. Widely published, Dralyuk’s work has appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, The New York Review of Books, Granta, and other premier publications. His latest book is “ My Hollywood and Other Poems .”  

“This award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters is special to me for a number of reasons,” Dralyuk said. “First, it’s a great honor to receive it from a jury of authors whose writing I so deeply admire. Second, it confirms for me that I’m on the right path – that my diverse body of work makes for a coherent whole. And third, since my wife, fellow Presidential Professor Jennifer Croft , received the same award last year, I feel we’re now a little closer to even.”  

In addition to teaching at TU, Dralyuk is working on a book about his hometown, Odesa, Ukraine, which continues to suffer aerial bombardment by Russian forces. “I can’t avoid the war,” he noted, “but my book isn’t directly about it. Instead, I think of it as a showcase for the city’s literary and musical jewels, a celebration of its people’s inimitable humor and irrepressible resilience.”  

At the same time, Dralyuk is writing poems and translating a long comic epic in couplets by Alexander Voloshin, who left Ukraine during the country’s civil war in the 1920s and settled in Hollywood, where he worked as an extra in the film industry.  

“As The University of Tulsa elevates its commitment to the arts and humanities, we anticipate further accolades from prestigious organizations such as the American Academy of Arts and Letters,” said TU Provost George Justice. “Writers, poets, composers, performers, and artists are central to the higher education experience. We encourage students from all disciplines to immerse themselves in the liberal arts, engage in new experiences, and explore their own creativity.”

The Curb Scholars Program is a selective scholarship and co-curricular enrichment program for undergraduate students who are committed to using the arts to effect social change and engage with their communities. Each Monday evening at the Curb Center, the scholars have been meeting to hear guest speakers—practicing local artists as well as those visiting Vanderbilt from across the U.S. and abroad—who have spoken about their work, facilitated creative activities and offered reflections on how protest surfaces in their artistic practice. Coupled with their own academic, creative and personal endeavors, these artists’ perspectives have helped Curb Scholars understand how art can be a tool for social change.  

In October, performance artist Tim Miller , a lifelong advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, marriage equality and immigration reform, guided Curb Scholars through performance prompts that helped them express their viewpoints on important issues. Miller was a member of the NEA Four, a group of artists whose grants from the National Endowment for the Arts were rescinded in 1990 because of the controversial themes that surfaced in their work—namely, gay rights and gender-based violence. Miller has since devoted his artistic practice to advocating free expression and equal rights for all, and his work with the Curb Scholars encouraged them to merge movement and activism and to consider how the body can be an important tool for speaking out.

J ust as forms of protest vary widely, so do artistic expressions of protest . Nashville-based poet Ciona Rouse , who visited the Curb Scholars in December , writes poetry that confronts injustice while finding delight in language, the natural world and the beauty that surrounds us. During her visit in November , Rouse led a poetry activity that showed the ability of language to harm and to heal: Curb Scholars were given quotes taken from recent news events that used disparaging language toward marginalized groups and were challenged to transform these phrases into dignifying declarations by adding, removing and reordering words. Inspired by the poetry of Ross Gay and The Ferguson Report: An Erasure by Nicole Sealey, Rouse ’s session with the Curb Scholars — as well as her larger creative practice as a poet— showed that protest can be expressed through beauty and softness.

Additional visiting artists included LeXander Bryant , a Nashville-based photographer whose photographs of Florence Price: A Celebration were exhibited at the Curb Center this spring; Jessie Montgomery , a contemporary classical music composer; and Allison Orr , a dance practitioner and choreographer who choreographs the everyday movements of municipal workers into live performances through her Austin-based company Forklift Danceworks .    

“At the Curb Center, we are interested in elevating the arts as a form of inquiry and a way of understanding the world around us,” said Leah Lowe, director of the Curb Center and professor of theatre. “Each of these artists has shared their work with the Curb Scholars and broadened their understanding of art-making as a method of investigation into the world around us.”  

The Curb Scholars have created thought-provoking videos, visual art, poetry, photography and textile art, and many incorporate multiple genres of music and dance.  

Molly Barth, associate director of the Curb Center, associate professor of flute at Blair and facilitator of the Curb Scholars program, said: “At each of our weekly meetings, the Curb Scholars deeply inspire me. They all have creative and thoughtful insights …, and they are already making inroads to creating a more just and holistic world. Professor Honored for Community-Engaged Creative Activity

For her outstanding work producing an equity-based art exhibition featuring more than 200 pieces of work from around the world, Nancy DeJoy , Associate Professor in the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Cultures at Michigan State University, is this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Partnership Award for Community-Engaged Creative Activity presented by MSU’s Office of University Outreach and Engagement . The exhibition, titled Creativity in the Time of COVID-19: Art for Equity and Social Justice , was held in April 2023 at four different Lansing locations. The month-long exhibition explored the use of creativity to cope with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. It featured art from all seven continents made by more than 100 artists, each from communities disproportionately affected by the pandemic, who responded with creativity as a personal outlet and tool for social change.

MSU Libraries now houses a repository of the Creativity in the Time of COVID-19 exhibition , making it available to people around the world and adding to the story of the pandemic while highlighting the voices and creative work of many who often go unheard.

“The idea was to try to add voices from people disproportionately affected by the pandemic and to give them a way to show how they use creativity to add to their stories,” DeJoy said. “We must make public spaces for these voices if we are to tell the full story of the pandemic and the inequities and structures of social injustice it exposes.” Supported by a $3 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s “Just Futures” Initiative, the exhibition was three years in the making by a team led by DeJoy and Fatima Konare, a graduate student at the time in the M.A. in Writing and Rhetoric program. The team sought to showcase the power of art to inspire, connect, and advocate for change, particularly in the face of a global pandemic.

While opening up spaces for international dialogue about creativity, health, well-being, social justice, and the effects of COVID-19 on everyday life, the Creativity in the Time of COVID-19 exhibition gave the artists a platform to assert agency in the face of oppressive social systems and to tell stories that elevate equity and social justice.

A diverse range of art forms were featured in the exhibition, including paintings, ceramics and glass sculptures, immersive digital displays, fiber art, poetry, and more. The collection represented a variety of voices, perspectives, and experiences during the pandemic. 

It revealed stories of loss, anger, and sorrow, as well as stories of generosity, strength, and resilience, and of maintaining community and personal connections during the global crisis. There also was a significant focus on racial diversity; LGBTQ+, immigrant, and refugee populations; those of Native American and Indigenous descent; and individuals with disabilities or chronic health issues.

The Distinguished Partnership Award values this kind of work along with a community-based creative activity that leaves positive and lasting impacts. DeJoy’s exhibition excelled in both these aspects.

“This award recognizes community collaborations that focus on opening spaces for voices that we need to listen to as we turn our hope for equity and social justice into inclusive action,” DeJoy said. “It is my honor to accept it and to share it with my local community partners. The many MSU students involved in the project also deserve a shout out, especially my co-curator Fatima Konare and student team leaders Kelsey Abner and Ben Lash.”

The Creativity in the Time Of COVID-19 emerged from DeJoy’s work with students. In early 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic when all MSU classes moved to remote learning, DeJoy gave her first-year writing students the opportunity to do creative final projects instead of writing traditional essays as one way to help them deal with the stress of the pandemic.

“We started to realize how important creativity was becoming as we faced the realities of COVID-19,” DeJoy said. “We wanted to find a way to invite the voices of people who were both disproportionately affected by the pandemic and using creativity in their everyday lives to tell their stories. We envision a society in which creative acts of knowledge make open new spaces for equity and social justice.” To gather pieces for the exhibition, a survey was created and distributed in English and four other languages, along with sign language and Braille, to extend an international invitation to people from around the world to submit artwork created during the pandemic. The team also reached out to art organizations from all over the world to help distribute the survey.  Pieces featured in the exhibition underwent an inclusive selection process, with a group of 26 MSU students, faculty, and staff as well as members of the greater Lansing community reviewing all the art submissions and deciding which pieces to include in the physical exhibition.

To be chosen for the exhibit, a piece had to tell a powerful story about the artist’s inner truth regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight the impact of the pandemic on people and communities who were disproportionately affected by this global crisis. DeJoy has a history of community-university partnerships at MSU that span 15 years. Focused on social justice issues related to identity, she has worked with survivors of sexual violence and several community partners. These partnerships have resulted in art exhibits/installations and conference presentations, expanding the public spaces for voices of people often not heard in the stories we tell about who we are as a community. One of those projects involved her Illuminating Survivor Voices poem, which was written about in the “’Illuminating Survivor Voices’ Makes Strides Across MSU” article . The Creativity in the Time of COVID-19 exhibit is her most recent collaboration. For that exhibit, she partnered with the Capital City Film Festival, Impression 5 Science Center, Lansing Art Gallery and Education Center, REACH Studio Art Center, and the Refugee Development Center, which all either served as venues for part of the exhibit or hosted events related to the exhibit.

In partnership with the Capital City Film Festival, the Creativity in the Time of COVID-19 exhibition opening was held along with the film festival’s Red Carpet Premiere Party at the Frandor Sears Building in Lansing. The Capital City Film Festival was the major grant sub awardee for the exhibition. DeJoy was presented the Distinguished Partnership Award for Community-Engaged Creative Activity at the 2024 MSU Outreach and Engagement Awards Ceremony on March 21 at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center.
