Candidates can check on  TES   for course equivalencies nationwide.  Another resource is  www.assist.org   to check for equivalencies at California public colleges and universities.

Email   [email protected]  for information on prerequisites that do not appear on either of  the listed equivalency websites.

PREREQUISITE DEADLINE AND MINIMUM GRADE

Prerequisite courses can be in progress at time of application, through the academic year when you apply.  All final prerequisite grades and official transcripts from fall in-progress prerequisites must be received by January 31 and after that, by July 1.

All prerequisite courses must have a "C" or better. A "C" or "C+" grade (or better) is acceptable, as long as the 3.00 minimum GPA requirement is still met. A "C-" grade, however, is too low, and is not acceptable.

RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR SPECIFIC COURSES

If you complete a combined "Anatomy & Physiology I" course, you must take PART II from the same campus. If you take a single-topic "Anatomy" course at any campus, you may take a single-topic "Physiology" course from any other campus.

The critical thinking prerequisite can only be satisfied by a specific logic-based class, with reference to inductive/deductive reasoning and/or evaluation of fallacies.

A higher level math course, such as Calculus or Trigonometry, CANNOT substitute for the statistics prerequisite.

Complete a separate course for each requirement - there is no "double-counting" requirements such as taking one class to meet both English composition and critical thinking.

Prerequisite courses that overlap with GE requirements are not waived for second bachelor degree candidates.

CREDIT/ NO CREDIT COURSES

ONE non-science prerequisite may be taken credit/no credit. All science prerequisites must be taken for a letter grade.

During the timeframe of COVID-19, some exceptions apply. Cal State East Bay Nursing strongly recommends a letter grade for nursing prerequisites , especially the science courses.   Our program will still accept CR (credit) on a transcript for a prerequisite course taken during spring 2020 or summer 2020.  Courses taken for CR (credit) during fall 2020, spring 2021 or summer 2021 will be evaluated case-by-case.  A class with a CR grade will not be included in the prerequisite GPA calculation.

AP EXAM CREDIT

Our office will accept an AP Exam score of 3 or higher to meet the requirements for the following courses, as shown in table below:

An approved AP Exam score will not be factored into the prerequisite or major GPA formula. To meet Nursing program application guidelines, send an official AP Exam score report to Cal State East Bay Admissions and upload an unofficial copy of the AP Exam score report to NursingCAS as proof of the score by the JANUARY 31 deadline. If a student earns AP credit for English and/or Statistics, that student may NOT take any additional non-science prerequisites for credit/no credit.

POLICY FOR REPEATING PREREQUISITE COURSES:

  • There is no penalty for retaking a prerequisite course for the Cal State East Bay Post-Licensure Program.
  • Check with your campus what the guidelines and policies are for repeating a course that earned at least a 'C' grade (Academic Renewal).
  • For the Cal State East Bay Nursing application, the higher grade is always considered for a repeated course, even if the student's own campus uses a different formula to calculate overall/cumulative GPA for repeated courses.

Transcripts

Official transcripts for nursing.

FOR NURSING FALL ADMISSION ONLY:  DUE JANUARY 31 and JULY 1 TO NursingCAS

*All  official  transcripts, from every college or university attended,  except  Cal State East Bay , are due to Cal State East Bay Admissions Office by  published deadlines  (if applying as a new transfer student). *All  official  transcripts, from every college or university attended,  including  Cal State East Bay , are due to NursingCAS.

  • Transcripts up to and including final fall term grades due January 31.
  • Transcripts showing final spring term grades (after application submitted) due July 1.

Official transcripts for courses in progress fall term are accepted up until the January 31 deadline, even after the NursingCAS application deadline passes.  We highly encourage you to send these to NursingCAS immediately after final fall grades are posted, so your application can continue to move forward in our evaluation process. For any classes already complete at schools you previously attended, please send to NursingCAS now.

ALSO...IMPORTANT REMINDERS

  • January transcripts must show completion of any Nursing prerequisites or other courses that were in progress during the FALL term in which you applied.
  • Send ANOTHER set of official transcripts by JULY 1 to show completion of any Nursing prerequisites or other courses that were in progress during the term after you applied.
  • Do NOT send any transcripts directly to the Nursing Program.
  • If preferred by the student, official transcripts for Cal State East Bay may be hand-delivered in sealed envelopes to the Enrollment Information Center on the Hayward campus or Academic Services Center on the Concord campus.
  • Nursing students already done with prerequisites are encouraged to send their transcripts to the  Cal State East Bay Admissions Office  and  NursingCAS  as early as possible.
  • If you are using an AP exam score to satisfy the English or Statistics prerequisite, please also send  Cal State East Bay Admissions Office  an official copy of your AP Exam score report and upload an unofficial copy of your AP Exam score report to  NursingCAS  by January 31.
  • Check your MyCSUEB and NursingCAS account for updates on whether or not your documents were received.

**MISSING TRANSCRIPT DEADLINES CAN RESULT IN AN INCOMPLETE APPLICATION AND DENIAL.

APPLICATION LINKS

Two online applications, fall nursing filing period:  october 1 - december 15.

Submit applications approximately a year in advance of when you want to begin the program.

FOLLOW THIS STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS

  • Submit university application (Cal State Apply) for Cal State East Bay Nursing BS program
  • Receive university communication about 24-48 hours after you submit, with your Cal State East Bay student ID, also known as  NetID
  • Activate NetID
  • Begin nursing application (NursingCAS)
  • Type NetID into required field in nursing application
  • Submit nursing application

APPLICATION #1 - UNIVERSITY APPLICATION -  Cal State Apply   (requires a fee)

You must activate your NetID (for transfer students) or have a NetID already (if current or previous student) in order to submit a nursing application.   Plan ahead so you still meet the nursing application deadline!

The university application is evaluated separately by the Cal State East Bay Admissions Office. Follow university deadlines for admission requirements. The university will notify you of university admission status after the Nursing Program evaluates and makes its decision.

Candidates who are currently attending Cal State East Bay need not complete an application for university admission UNLESS they will graduate in another major before the term when they would BEGIN the Nursing Program. For example, if applying for Fall 2024 admission, Cal State East Bay students must fill out a Cal State East Bay university application if they will graduate Fall 2023, Spring 2023 or Summer 2023.

APPLICATION #2 - NURSING APPLICATION - NursingCAS   (requires a fee)

**Some personal email accounts have filtered our Nursing Program emails into Spam folders. Please check your Spam folder regularly during the application process. We send important updates and reminders via email through the NursingCAS system and Cal State East Bay email system and we do not want you to miss these. Thank you!!

Changes to the Admissions Process Due to COVID-19

Our department is aware of many unexpected changes to the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) student experience due to individual health and safety considerations, remote learning and suspension of clinical experiences.

Fall 2022 and later admission will include the option for an intensive schedule or a part-time schedule.

The fall 2021 admit class has a part-time (two year) schedule and extended due dates for ADN program completion and proof of RN license.

Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) classes

Cal State East Bay Nursing strongly recommends a letter grade for nursing prerequisites , especially the science courses.   Our program will still accept CR (credit) on a transcript for a prerequisite course taken during spring 2020 or summer 2020.  Courses taken for CR (credit) during fall 2020, spring 2021 or summer 2021 will be evaluated case-by-case.  A class with a CR grade will not be included in the prerequisite GPA calculation.

Online Lab Courses in Science Prerequisites

Cal State East Bay Nursing will accept online labs for science prerequisites beginning spring 2020 term, as long as it as an approved science and lab course.

Selection and Notification

How applicants are selected.

  • Admission is considered for all applicants that meet document deadlines, earn minimum prerequisite GPA, and satisfy prerequisite content. If space is limited by clinical site availability (this is not anticipated), applicants may be admitted based on their position on a randomized list.
  • If there are no space limitations, all qualified applicants are offered admission. If a randomized list is necessary, qualified applicants from the top portion of the randomized list will be offered admission to the program.
  • If using a randomized list, candidates not immediately offered admission will stay in the same random order and be placed on a waitlist.
  • If any candidate offered admission declines before the first day of fall term, the next student on the waitlist will be contacted and offered admission. This process continues, following the exact order of the waitlist, until all available spots are filled.

Our program currently has plenty of space available.

NOTIFICATION

Students in this program are notified of their admission status via email in April.

Candidates that submit an incomplete application or do not meet minimum GPA requirements may be notified of their admission status earlier than other candidates.

University admission offers for transfer students will not be released until the Nursing Program makes its admission decisions.

WHAT IF YOU THINK THERE'S AN ERROR?

Notify NURSING Admissions at  [email protected]   within 15 calendar days  of receipt of the notification. Write a thorough explanation why you believe an error occurred. Provide written documentation to support your claim upon request.

After Your Offer Of Admission

Mandatory requirements after notification of admission.

  • Criminal Background Check and Drug Screening - must be clear for entry into program
  • Attend one-day Nursing Orientation in mid- to late-June.
  • University Writing Skills Requirement - how this is satisfied depends on year of admission - information will be shared separately if any action is needed before enrollment.

HEALTH DOCUMENTS LIST   We encourage you to familiarize yourself with these requirements and be ready to submit proof of them on short notice. We provide exact deadlines and directions via email with our offer of admission. Please do not submit any documents or proof to the Nursing Department until requested.

Nursing, M.S. Program

Program description.

The Cal State East Bay Master of Science in Nursing Program seeks to prepare nurses from our diverse, multicultural community to be effective nurse educators, leaders and administrators in clinical, organizational, or academic settings.  The curriculum builds and expands upon baccalaureate nursing practice and seeks to prepare nurses with broad knowledge and advanced skills needed for a higher level of nursing practice and leadership.   The program allows for a seamless pathway to a practice or research doctoral education for those interested in a doctoral degree. The program provides graduate nursing education in an accessible and flexible delivery approach of online and hybrid courses.  The program is designed to be completed in 4 semesters.

The MSN Program provides two practice concentrations (Online programs apply through Continuing Education at https://www.ce.csueastbay.edu/ ):

  • Nursing Education
  • Nursing Leadership and Administration.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the Master of Science in Nursing program, graduates will be able to:

  • Integrate theoretical and scientific knowledge of ethical/legal principles, advanced nursing practice and clinical excellence in professional practice as well as role development in clinical, organizational and academic settings.
  • Lead change to improve quality outcomes and demonstrate effective leadership in advanced practice roles in nursing our diverse, multicultural community.
  • Critically analyze evidence in the advanced practice of nursing and in the planning, delivery and evaluation of quality care in clinical, organizational and academic settings.
  • ntegrate healthcare technologies to facilitate interprofessional collaboration that improves clinical practice, education and organizational management.
  • Design culturally inclusive, ethical, and innovative nursing care practices and systems in clinical prevention and population care for individuals, families, and communities across the healthcare system.
  • Develop and cultivate interprofessional partnerships that foster a culture of lifelong learning and professional development to advance excellence in nursing practice.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the M.S. in Nursing program will be prepared to work in clinical, organizational, and academic work settings.  Graduates of the Nursing Education concentration will be equipped to work as clinical education leaders in practice settings or as educators in academic nursing programs.  Graduates of the Leadership and Management concentration will be prepared for mid-level administration and leadership positions in clinical practice settings.

The workforce demands and employment opportunities are projected to be exceptionally strong for nurse educators and nurse administrators nationally as well as in California.   As the workforce demands for Registered Nurses increases, the need for nurse educators with MSN degrees to serve as faculty and clinical instructors will increase.  Expansion of the Registered Nurse workforce needs will require an increase in nurse administrators and leaders for supervision in the workplace.  Labor reports predict a “much faster than average” growth rate for both nurse educators and healthcare manager positions.

Admission Criteria

The M.S. in Nursing degree program is open to applicants who have a baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited institution and are licensed or eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse in California. Admission will be granted based upon the Admission Committee’s overall assessment of the student’s qualifications and academic/career potential, using the following criteria:

  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Valid RN license, or be eligible for CA RN Licensure.
  • One year or more professional nursing experience is preferred.
  • Two professional letters of recommendation (on letterhead), indicating the applicant’s potential for success in graduate education and a nursing leadership role.
  • Goal Statement - A two-page essay indicating the applicant’s career interests and goals, their purpose for seeking this advanced degree, and how you are prepared to meet the demands and requirements of this program.
  • Interview - To be arranged following receipt of the application.
  • All undergraduate/graduate transcripts must be sent to University Admissions.
  • STAT 100 Elements of Statistics and Probability, or its equivalent, with a grade of “C” or better prior to starting the MSN program and within the past ten (10) years.  Please note: To request a waiver of this recency requirement, contact the Nursing Department.

To be considered for admission to the Master of Science Degree in Nursing Program, students must complete two separate application forms:

  • University Application Cal State Apply , and
  • Nursing Supplemental Application (NursingCAS)

Please review the detailed application instructions on the MSN program website for prospective students at MSN Program website for prospective students.

Major Requirements

The M.S. in Nursing program requires completion of 33 semester units consisting of required core courses, concentration specific courses, a practicum experience and the Masters Synthesis Project. Generally, all units must be taken at Cal State East Bay.  Transfer credits are rarely accepted in the MS in Nursing Program.

Students will complete a Masters Synthesis Project in their selected area of interest.   This culminating project will address a significant nursing practice/education issue to make change and improve practice demonstrating advanced professional practice, and comprehensive knowledge integration and mastery in Nursing Education or Nursing Leadership.

A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 must be maintained in all 33 semester units taken to satisfy the degree requirements. Students who fail to maintain progress by falling below a 3.0 GPA in their graduate courses for two consecutive semesters will be academically disqualified from the university.  The program mandates that the degree must be completed within four years.

Students accumulating more than six units of work graded “I” may not register for courses applicable to the degree until the “I” grades are removed.

Cause for Dismissal from Program

Students may be dismissed from the program at any time “for cause.” “For cause” includes, but is not limited to, poor academic or fieldwork performance or academic dishonesty, as well as behavior that is destructive to students or faculty, and/or interferes with the educational environment, and/or represents a threat to potential clients. “For cause” also includes student behaviors that are inconsistent with the legal, ethical, and/or personal responsibilities of professional nurses.

Nursing, M.S.: Nursing Education Concentration

The Nursing Education concentration is designed to prepare graduates as educators for academic or clinical settings.  The curriculum includes five core courses in advanced nursing knowledge, theory, research methods and evidence based practice, knowledge synthesis, population health, health informatics, and healthcare policy.  In addition to the core curriculum, the nursing education concentration includes five courses in theories of teaching learning, curriculum design and development, instructional teaching methodologies and technologies, and education needs assessment and evaluation.  As nursing educators must be proficient in nursing practice, the nursing education concentration builds on baccalaureate knowledge with graduate level course work in health assessment, physiology/pathophysiology, and pharmacology to enhance the nurse educator’s expertise in nursing knowledge and skills.  Masters students enrolled in the Nursing Education concentration will have the opportunity to build expertise in a practice area and integrate this knowledge of nursing  into practice in the required teaching practicum course.

HI! I'm thinking of applying but I do not feel confident to apply /: . I just took my TEAS and I literally filled out my application for CSU in general but I do not know if I am going to apply. Do you mind sharing your data with me?

Hey Everyone!

I’m applying this semester, and I am depending on God’s GRACE to let me in! Here are my stats:

Cumulative & Prerequisite GPA: 4.0

TEAS: 82.7 ? ? ? ? (help me Lord!)

Local area admission

~450 hours of community service

I’ve only taken the TEAS once, but I plan on retaking it soon. I barely gave myself time to study before, and I’m not making that mistake again! Unfortunately, I don’t plan on retaking it before the application period ends, so I’m stuck with an 82 ? .

Anywhoo, good luck to everyone! I’ll say a prayer for us all! ?

chesnot

Does anyone know how East Bay calculates their score?

TEAS : 91.3% community service : Atleast 70+ hrs.

Thank you in advance!

Nice Stats! As far as I know, their admission scoring is confidential now, but it used to be weighed heavily on grades (50pts) and TEAS (35pts). Now, in addition to those two, they evaluate your personal statement and give extra points for local area admission, prerequisites taken at east bay, military status, other languages and community service/healthcare experience. Based on boards for recent years of admission it’s anyone’s ballgame- I’ve seen people admitted with a 3.4 GPA and low TEAS, but have healthcare experience. It’s so hard to tell!

stormii

it’s my first time applying for transfer, so I’m pretty nervous ><

I have a 4.0 for prerequisites, 110 hours of health-care experience & 290 hours of community service! I’m taking my TEAS in about 2 weeks, and I’m freaking out LOL.

also, from what I’ve read from the past forums + asking people on fb for those who had gotten in, it seems that the school tends to favor locals ? ‍ ?

I am so nervous to apply to this cohort!  But I’m gunna go for it. My stats are

80.7 on TEAS

5 years experience as a full time CNA and 1 year of medical inventory supervisor and 4 years as skilled nursing facility social worker. I am transferring from a local community college as well. I don’t qualify for the military points.  I also have three letters of support/recommendations.

I have applied too. First time not perfect stats.

Hi guys, I was looking over the nursing cas application for CSUEB and there was a question asking if I sent my official TEAS Report from ATI TEAS to "Cal State East Bay Nursing" and I was wondering if this is different from sending my actual TEAS Report to the school itself? In other words, I sent my official TEAS transcript to "cal state east bay" but I wasn't sure if I needed to specifically sent it through "cal state east bay nursing" as it was stated on the Nursing Cas. If anyone can clarify for me that would be great! (I've been trying to reach out to CSUEB but they take forever to reply...

Hey! You did it correctly ?

Here been some of my stats: science GPA 4.0, cumulative 3.97, local admin points and health hours are good.

I've never written one personal statement front which lives now required, anyone have any tips? I want as many of those 20 points possible as I can manage!
