On a global scale, India accounts for approximately 37% of the total illiterate population. Closer to home, 26% of Indians lack access to education and guidance. The Central Government, in collaboration with various state governments, has developed a number of policies to educate the people of the country. All of those attempts, however, have largely been futile.

The solution to making this country thrive and progress is to make education accessible for all. Due to a lack of funds and opportunities, more than half of the people in our country do not receive an education. Only a select few are capable of obtaining a proper education and putting it to good use. Therefore, education is important. Because they comprehend the significance of law and order, the citizens have a deeper grasp of law and order, increasing their likelihood of upholding the law. Education aids in eradicating a number of social problems, including the dowry system and child marriage, and it also empowers women by promoting their independence.

Women who are educated are better able to advocate for themselves and express their thoughts. A solid education improves a person's communication abilities and allows them to express themselves more skillfully. As knowledgeable people, we are viewed as a vital resource for our society. Education enables us to pass along important morals, polite behaviour, and moral principles to others.

It also encourages the feeling that one is having a better life in addition to being beneficial on a physical, mental, and social basis. Our future is created by constructive education. According to studies, those who are educated are more likely to live longer and be healthier. A solid foundation is created for the children by investing in various types of learning when they are still young, as they'd be having a good foundation. A quality education aims to achieve new things for the well being of the entire society.

Education not only allows us to learn about history, physics, arithmetic, geography, and other topics, but it also helps us in handling difficult situations in life . Why is education important? How can an educated person change the world? Speech on education should aim to provide answers to the above questions. It should also provide insight into how education can change a person’s life. Education is one of the necessities required to survive in today’s world. It helps in giving a perspective to a person where he or she can think and provide solutions to different social issues. There are many ways to deliver a speech on education but the most important and effective one is that which allows the audience to think and question the various points discussed in the speech. If you want to get the answer to why education is important, read on to discover how to deliver an effective and engaging speech on education.

Here we have provided a long and short speech about education along with that we have also given 10 line pointers about the best speech on education in English.

Long Speech about Education

Good morning to everyone present here today. I feel honored and blessed to be given this opportunity to give a speech on education. I hope everyone learns something from this speech.

Education has been with us for ages and it has transformed the world around us. It was because of educating ourselves, humans have invented technologies that have changed the world.

When it comes to an individual, education plays an important role throughout life. Getting proper education is necessary as it is the deciding factor for our status in society nowadays. Education is required to get a good high-paying job, to be successful, and even to start a family. Education also helps us by providing success that would eventually lead us to live a happy and luxurious life. Education helps in developing the personality of a person both in a physical and mental standard and helps in transforming a person’s living standard. It helps in promoting the feeling of the mental, social, and physical well-being of a person by providing a better living life. A good education is always constructive, a person who is educated well is respected by society and even has a role that would help in the development of society. Let us take an example of the teachers sitting here in the audience, their role of teaching and sharing knowledge with the students will help in making a future that will work for the betterment of the country. It is said that knowledge is the greatest weapon in the world and I believe it is true, education provides a lot of confidence by giving us vast knowledge in various fields. It helps in personal growth and the most important way to be successful in life. As we all know, the more knowledge we get, the more we grow and develop in life. Knowledge gives us recognition and respect in the world. There is a difference between the knowledge we learn in school and colleges and the knowledge required to live in a society. Being well educated does not only mean having fancy degrees from reputed colleges and a high-paying job but it also means being kind towards everyone around. Many people in social work in a multinational company but they lack the basic knowledge required to talk to people. Some people are arrogant and consider themselves above because of their education and jobs. Remember my friend, being educated is important but it is also very important to be kind to everyone around you and treat them with respect. The sole purpose of getting an education is to be a good citizen towards everyone and then being successful in personal and professional life. Everyone is incomplete without a good education as it helps us to make the right decisions in life. In this competitive world, everybody is fighting for survival, education could be considered as an advantage to be successful in life and it has become a necessity after food, shelter, and clothes.

The next point I would like to highlight is the lack of financial education that is taught at school. In many schools and colleges, the only thing everyone is teaching the students is how to score well in exams by memorizing a few textbooks but sadly they are not teaching students the knowledge required to excel in life. Financial education is a very important part of life, it is required to survive in society. Concepts like how to save money, how to invest money in different assets such as gold, silver, and real estate are not being taught in educational institutions. Students must also learn the practical application of learning a subject. We often hear that many graduates are unemployed and the reason being that they do not have enough practical knowledge about the concepts that they learned in educational institutions. Students must learn this knowledge and excel in their careers.

To conclude this speech, I want to say that education is the most important tool one can have to survive in this world and it is a necessity as it provides solutions to all the problems. If a person is educated, he or she will be aware of different concerns such as corruption, terrorism, and other social issues. It is the most important tool which provides inner and outer strength to a person. Treat everyone with respect, even if you have the most valuable degree or are working in a great company, and always have financial knowledge as it will help you to grow in society. Thank you.

 A Short Speech about Education

Good morning to one and all present here. Today I have been given an opportunity to give a small speech on education. I hope everyone here learns something from it.

Education could be defined as the process of gaining knowledge, skill, beliefs, and values that help in the growth and development of a person. Education is the most important asset, it is as important as food, shelter, and clothes. While the school and college education programs are relatively modern, the learning process has persisted for a long time. Humans have developed by learning themselves, and society must evolve. We can take the example of hunter-gatherers, they used to pass down their knowledge of hunting and harvesting food during different seasons.

Today, education is the most important aspect of society as it helps in providing a job and starting a family. Educating helps in understanding the world in a better way. Let us take an example to understand that, a person who knows about corruption and other social issues will play an important role in fighting it rather than a person who is unaware of anything. Education provides an individual with opportunities to prove themselves in society and be successful in the future. Education also provides an employment opportunity and if a person is employed and is working, the poverty of the country will exponentially decrease which will help in the development of the country.

In India, many educational institutes provide only theoretical knowledge that helps the student to get good grades in exams which will increase his or her employment opportunities but many educational institutes in India fail to teach students the financial and practical knowledge that is required to excel in the real world. Financial education is important as it helps a person to understand the concept of how the world really works.

I would like to end this speech by saying education is very important as it helps in bringing economic progress and social change to the country. People who are educated will help in inventing and bringing new ideas, which will help in the development of the country. Thank you.

Speech on Education

Being educated is one of the most crucial things in every individual’s life. This article provides you with a gist of the importance of education and sample speeches on education that would guide you to write one on your own.

Education – how important is it, 1-minute speech on education, 2-minute speech on education and its importance, faqs on education.

‘A little learning is a dangerous thing’. These words by Alexander Pope are so meaningful. Learning should always be complete. No matter what your line of interest might be, knowing just a tad will not help one in any way. The modern age is an age of specialisation. In every field, we need specialists to point us in the right direction. Here, you will learn a lot more about education and how to make a speech on education as appealing and interesting as possible.

According to Horace Mann, ‘A human being is not in any proper sense a human being till he is educated’. An educated individual always knows his manners and behaves gently in public as well as in private scenarios. Education does not just mean learning about all the different subjects and knowing everything up to date. An individual is said to be educated when they are able to apply all that they have learnt in their personal and professional lives effectively and in the best interest of everyone around. So try not to overload yourself with information but try to comprehend what you learn well and put it to great use.

Man has made remarkable progress in the field of science and technology. We have huge industrial units, and we manufacture ships, aeroplanes, trains and even rockets – all evidence of how far we have grown as an educated nation. However, it is not just scientific knowledge that gives manpower. There is spiritual knowledge and the knowledge about oneself, which is also equally important to make oneself a complete human being.

What is as vital as gaining knowledge is that the knowledge you possess should be used only for constructive purposes and for the welfare of one’s fellow human beings and in no way to harm anyone, no matter what. Never use knowledge to one’s advantage. For instance, there is this growing buzz to master the art of ethical hacking. Anything has a good and bad side. An individual who learns hacking can use it for right and wrong purposes. It is up to the individual to decide which side one wants to choose. I would say that even this choice that one has to make is part of one’s education. It shows one’s ability to think rationally and consciously before making a choice.

Education is not whole until the individual learns to respect oneself and others, and value every opinion. Nothing or no one is as attractive and enduring as a clever, focused and compassionate individual. In this world where people use education or educated people to their own advantage, let us try to be unassuming individuals who would put our education to good use, for the welfare of oneself and the whole humankind.

How do you start a speech on education?

Generally, a speech on any topic can be started with a quote related to the topic or with the history or an introduction to the topic. When you draft a speech on education, you can do the same. Starting with a story or even a joke would help get the attention of your audience.

How is education important in our life?

Education has always been mandatory for the intellectual survival of human beings. It is more so in the current scenario where the competition is huge in every field. An individual who does not choose to get himself/herself educated is definitely losing on what is most important to live his/her life happily and peacefully.

How can education change your life?

‘Knowledge is power’, so goes the saying. That is exactly what education gives you. Being educated will give you access to the intellectual world. Be it self learning or supervised learning, you would possess a lot more than you think you do. Every experience would teach you something that would change your life forever.

For ex- arts, science, engineering, medicine, accountancy etc.

The Latter skills are mostly acquired through formal education, which is classroom based and is provided by trained teachers. The basic education skills, on the other hand, not necessarily be acquired in class rooms, but could also be gained through, community classes or even at home.

The educated workforce that a nation has contributes immensely in its own economy as well as to the economy of the world.

Education not only reforms the life of an individual and economy of a nation, but also transforms a society by diminishing centuries old social evils like dowry, child marriage, child labor, gender discrimination etc. These all are main hindrances to any nation’s prosperity and growth, and they all could be killed by only one weapon – education. The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20500

Remarks by President   Biden on the Saving on a Valuable Education Plan | Culver City,   CA

Culver City Julian Dixon Library Culver City, California

1:18 P.M. PST

THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  (Applause.)

Well, Dr. Saint-Paul, thank you very much for that introduction.  But, you know, you’re — you’re like thousands of others who — who took out loans for undergraduate school and graduate school and — because you wanted to serve your community, and you have.

But, in the meantime, that $90,000 you borrowed grew to $145,000, even though you kept paying on a monthly basis.

Folks, I’m happy to have been able to forgive these loans because when we realize and relieve Americans of their student debt, they’re free to chase their dreams.

And, Doc, you’ve got one of your dreams: your baby girl.  And a — and by the way, an awful lot of people with student debt are putting off whether they can have a child, whether they can — a whole range of basic, basic, fundamental issues.

And, Mayor Bass, thank you for your partnership and, more importantly for me, your friendship.

And I want to thank the Culver City Mayor.  Where are you, Mayor?

MAYOR MCMORRIN:  Right here.

THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you.  (Laughter.)  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It’s great to — and it’s great to be joined by members of Congress: Alex in the Senate and Sydney in the House.  I really appreciate you being here.  It’s a busman’s holiday for you guys to come hear another public official speak, but thank you.

And I know our great Vice President sends her love to all her California friends.  She constantly — all I hear about is California, you know?  (Laughter.)  No, I’m glad to be here.  When I was vice president, all I heard about was Chicago, you know?  (Laughter.)  But I’m making — trying to make sure they hear about Delaware, but it ain’t working yet.  (Laughter.)

Look, Kamala and I ran to lead this country.  We made a commitment to fix our broken student loan system.  That was one of the things we both talked about in the beginning.  Because while a college degree is still a ticket to a better life, that ticket is too expensive.   And too many Americans are still saddled with unsustainable debt in exchange for a college degree.

So, there was a student loan program to be able to afford a college degree, but a lot of people didn’t take advantage of it.  What — and I wanted to make sure they did.

The ability to repay, though, has become so burdensome, a lot of people can’t even repay.  And they try.  They — they don’t miss payments.  They work like the devil every month to pay their bills.  But even if they pay their loans, their debt increases.  It doesn’t diminish because of interest rates.

And I thought I’d — make a lot more sense to relieve student debt for families and it would grow our economy.

Well, there’s a — were existing programs in the law.  To fix and adjust the programs, we had — we had to change them to make people actually — make them available for — make people eligible.  And that’s what I’ve done when the Supreme Court said I couldn’t go ahead and relieve all the debt.

It helps everyone, not just the people whose debt is relieved.  But when people with student debt are re- — student debt relieved, they buy homes, they start businesses, they contribute.  They engage in the community in ways they weren’t able to before.  That actually grows the economy.  It grows the economy.

That’s why my — my administration is taking significant action to provide student debt relief to so many borrows — borrowers that — many of whom didn’t know they were — they were able to get relief, and do it as quickly and as — as possible.

Look, early in my term, I announced a major plan to provide millions of working families with debt relief for their college student debt.  Tens of millions of people in debt were literally about to be canceled — their debts.  But my MAGA Republican friends in the Congress, elected officials, and special interests stepped in and sued us.  And the Supreme Court blocked it.  They blocked it.

But that didn’t stop me.  I announced we were going to pursue alternative paths for student debt relief for as many borrowers as possible.  And that’s the effort that’s been underway the last two years.

I fixed what’s called the “SAVE Plan.”  It existed, but I fixed it to make it the most affordable repayment plan ever.

Before I took office, student borrowers had to pay 10 percent of their discretionary income on a monthly basis.  If they made less than — if they didn’t have enough to do that, they were able to not have to pay that month, but the interest continued.  A lot of people don’t have the means to do that, though.

Under my SAVE Plan, we’re cutting in half to 5 percent the undergraduate borrowers — what undergraduate borrowers have to pay after their living expenses are accounted for.

That means no one with an undergraduate loan, whether it’s a community college or a four-year college, will have to pay more than 5 percent of their discretionary income to repay those loans starting in July.  And that’s income after you pay the ne- — for necessities like food and housing.

Already 7.5 million Americans have enrolled in this so-called SAVE Plan.  And there’s more than 4 million of those borrowers had their monthly payments drop to zero if they’re living paycheck to paycheck, below a certain level.

This plan is the most generous repayment program ever, and today we’re doing it even faster and quicker than ever before.

I’m proud to announce our SAVE plan.  We are immediately canceling the debt loans for over 150,000 borrowers nearly six months ahead of schedule.

Starting today, we are canceling student debt for borrowers who are enrolled in the SAVE Plan and have been paying student loans for as little as 10 years.  If they took less than tw- — if they borrowed less than $2,000, it’s forgiven — they — $12,000, excuse me, it’s for- — the loan is forgiven.

This action will be a huge help to graduates of community college and borrowers with smaller loans, putting them back on track faster for debt forgiveness than ever before.

And this builds on other progress I’ve made in canceling student debt for close to 4 million Americans through various actions.

For example, we fixed what was called the Public Service Loan program — Loan Forgiveness program, which was designed to make sure that school teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, social workers, public servants get their student loans forgiven if they make payments for 10 years in a row and the 10 years of public service at the same time.

When I took office, there were 7,000 public servants who had taken advantage of this program and had them forgiven, but thanks to the reforms we made in the program, now there are nearly 800,000 have had their debts forgiven — 800,000.  (Applause.)

Look, let me close with this.  This is — kind of relief can be life-changing for individuals and for their families.  And it’s good for the economy as a whole.

By freeing millions of Americans from the crushing debt of student loan programs, it means they can finally get on with their lives instead of getting — their lives being put on hold.  They can think about buying a house, starting a home, starting a family, having a family future that they can enjoy, or saving for the family’s future — saving and being able to put away a little bit of money.

I’m proud to have been able to give borrowers, like so many of you, the relief you earned.  I promise you I’m never going to stop fighting for hardworking American families.

So, if you qualify, you’ll be hearing from me shortly.  Thousands of people per month are eligible — about 25,000 a month are eli- — or every two months — it will be paid at a 50,000 basis — but are eligible for relief, and they’ll be getting a letter from me letting them know they’re qualified.  And when they get that letter, your debt is going to be forgiven.

Look, folks, and it’s also helping you who don’t go to college.  It’s not just — you know, people say to me sometimes, “Well, Joe, that’s great, you’re helping people get into college, but how about all those hardworking people you grew up with in the neighborhood?  How about all those folks in labor unions?  How about all those hardworking people that work with their hands, why should they…”

Well, just today, my Labor Department announced 200 — this is not the student loan program, but $200 million in grants for registered — registered apprenticeship programs around the country — while you can learn a skilled trade and lead to good-paying jobs.

You know, everybody thinks if you’re an electrician, you — you say, “I want to be electrician,” and you’re all — you got to go to school, basically.  These apprenticeship programs are four and five years before you qualify to have a license.  They work like hell to get these licenses.

And guess what?  If you work with your hands, you ought to be able to make a decent living.  And that’s why they’re doing it now with my prop- — my — my position on organized labor.

So, it matters.  All of this matters.

My dad used to say, “Joey, a — a paycheck is about more than — a job is about more than a paycheck.  It’s about your dignity.  It’s about opportunity.  It’s about being able to look your kid in the eye and say, ‘Honey, it’s going to be okay.  You got a chance.’”

That’s all we’re doing — and people are taking advantage of it — giving people a chance, a fighting chance to make it, because no one who’s willing to work hard in America should be denied the opportunity to have that chance.

And so, I — how many of you had student loans forgiven here?

All right.  (Laughter.)

I tell you what, how about anybody over $10,000?  $30,000?  $50,000?

AUDIENCE MEMBER:  Next month.

THE PRESIDENT:  Next month?  Okay.

Anyway.  Seriously, thank you.

And people have to understand: You not only did the right thing by busting your neck and going back to school and doing as well as you did in school, but you’re breaking your neck for people.  You’re doing it through programs that benefit the society — benefit the American people.

Just like I got criticized not long ago for being too favorable on organized labor and unions.  Well, they’re the best workers in the world.  They’re the most qualified technicians in the — no, they really are.  They really are.

And — (applause) — and the economy is growing.  It’s growing — jobs, income — across the board.  We have the most advanced economy of any major nation in the world.

We’ve got a lot more to do, but with the help of all of you college graduates who — who have paid off your student loans now, I’m confident we’re going to get it all done.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.  Appreciate it.  (Applause.)

Q    Do you worry this will get shut down in court? THE PRESIDENT:  I don’t have a worry at all. 1:29 P.M. PST

Understanding the Importance of Speech Education in High School

Effective communication skills are essential in today’s world. Whether it’s expressing ideas, persuading others, or building relationships, the ability to communicate effectively is a valuable asset. That’s why speech education in high school plays a crucial role in students’ personal and professional development. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of speech education, discuss the components of a speech curriculum for high school, and address the challenges in implementing speech education.

The Benefits of Speech Education in High School

Speech education offers numerous benefits for high school students. Let’s take a closer look at some of these advantages:

Improved Communication Skills

Speech education enhances both verbal and non-verbal communication abilities. Students learn to express themselves clearly, articulate their thoughts, and develop fluency in speech. These skills are essential for effective communication in various contexts, such as presentations, interviews, and everyday conversations.

Boosts Confidence and Self-Esteem

Public speaking can be intimidating for many individuals, but speech education helps students overcome stage fright and fear of public speaking. Through practice and guidance, students build self-assurance and self-belief, which are crucial for success in both personal and professional endeavors.

Enhances Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

Speech education encourages students to analyze and organize their thoughts effectively. They learn to develop persuasive arguments, use logical reasoning, and present their ideas in a coherent manner. These critical thinking and problem-solving skills are transferable to various academic subjects and real-life situations.

Fosters Empathy and Active Listening

Speech education promotes empathy and active listening skills. Students learn to understand others’ perspectives, emotions, and experiences. By cultivating empathy and practicing respectful communication, students develop stronger interpersonal relationships and become more effective collaborators.

Incorporating Speech Curriculum in High Schools

A structured speech curriculum is essential for effective speech education in high schools. It provides a comprehensive framework for learning and ensures progressive skill development. Here are some key components of a speech curriculum for high school:

Public Speaking Techniques and Strategies

Students learn various public speaking techniques and strategies, such as vocal projection, eye contact, and body language. They practice different types of speeches, including informative, persuasive, and impromptu speeches, to develop versatility in their communication skills.

Speech Writing and Organization

Students learn how to write and organize speeches effectively. They understand the importance of a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. They also learn to use supporting evidence, rhetorical devices, and storytelling techniques to engage their audience.

Non-Verbal Communication and Body Language

Non-verbal communication and body language play a significant role in effective communication. Students learn to interpret and use non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, and posture, to enhance their message delivery and overall communication effectiveness.

Debate and Argumentation Skills

Debate and argumentation skills are essential for critical thinking and persuasive communication. Students learn how to construct well-reasoned arguments, anticipate counterarguments, and engage in respectful debates. These skills enable them to express their opinions confidently and persuasively.

Integrating Speech Education Across Subjects

Speech education can be integrated across various subjects to enhance students’ learning experience. Here are some examples:

  • Collaborating with English and literature classes to analyze and deliver speeches related to literary works
  • Incorporating speech activities in social studies and history classes to present research findings or historical events
  • Connecting speech education with science classes by having students present scientific research or explain complex concepts

Overcoming Challenges in Implementing Speech Education

Implementing speech education in high schools can come with challenges. However, with the right strategies and support, these challenges can be overcome:

Limited Resources and Funding

Securing resources and funding for speech education can be a challenge for schools. However, educators can seek grants and community support to fund speech-related activities and materials. Additionally, utilizing technology and online resources can provide cost-effective alternatives for delivering speech education.

Addressing Student Anxiety and Fear

Many students experience anxiety and fear when it comes to public speaking. Creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment is crucial in helping students overcome these challenges. Gradual exposure to public speaking and providing practice opportunities in a safe and non-judgmental setting can gradually build students’ confidence and reduce their anxiety.

Professional Development for Teachers

Teachers play a vital role in delivering effective speech education. Providing professional development opportunities, such as training and workshops on speech education, can equip teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge. Encouraging collaboration among teachers and sharing best practices can also enhance the quality of speech education in high schools.

Speech education in high school is of utmost importance for students’ personal and professional growth. By improving communication skills, boosting confidence, enhancing critical thinking, and fostering empathy, speech education equips students with essential skills for success in various aspects of life. It is crucial for schools and educators to prioritize speech curriculum for high school students to ensure their holistic development. Opinion Why not pay teachers $100,000 a year?

speech on importance of education for students

Adam DiPerna always had to hold it in.

As a Spanish teacher at Gerald G. Huesken Middle School in Lancaster, Pa., he’d arrive in his classroom at 7:10 a.m. each day and cannonball into a morning that left no time for a bathroom break. He’d teach back-to-back-to-back-to-back classes until his lunch period, 27 minutes during which he also had to heat and eat the food he’d brought from home, email parents about problems and absences, and field questions from students. After school, he coached wrestling, advised the student council and chaired the GHMS world language department. Work, from grading papers to preparing lessons, spilled into the evenings and weekends he wanted to spend with his wife and three kids.

For his efforts, DiPerna — with a Bucknell University diploma and a master’s degree in education — earned less than any college graduate he knew. So, last year, after a decade and a half in the classroom, he quit teaching to take a job as a sales representative at a large packaging company, trading a life of conjugated verbs for a new life of corrugated cardboard. “I wanted to be a public servant,” DiPerna, 42, told me. “I did not get into teaching to make a lot of money. But I also didn’t get into it to barely scrape by.”

He earned more in his first partial year as a paper salesman than in his 15th year as a top-rated teacher. “I get paid more money,” he said. “And I can listen to the call of nature.”

DiPerna’s gain is America’s loss. Four years after the onset of the pandemic, students across the country are still struggling. Test scores are falling . Absenteeism is rising . Meanwhile, about 44 percent of U.S. schools face a teacher shortage.

If we’re serious about hanging on to capable educators, and attracting new ones, we should start treating them like true professionals. And one place to begin is compensation.

Why not pay America’s teachers a minimum salary of $100,000 a year?

The average annual salary for public school teachers during 2021-2022 was $66,397 , according to the National Center for Education Statistics, a nearly 8 percent pay cut, in inflation-adjusted terms, from a decade ago. Salary isn’t the only reason educators exit the profession. But whether they work in suburban New York or rural Mississippi, teachers earn significantly less than they could in other fields.

The Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank, calls this difference the “ teacher pay penalty .” EPI calculated that , in 2022, teachers earned only 74 cents on the dollar compared with comparably educated professionals. The right-leaning Hoover Institution reached a similar conclusion in its 2020 report on educator compensation , showing that, even adjusting for factors such as talent and experience, “teachers are paid 22 percent less than they would be if they were in jobs in the U.S. economy outside of teaching.”

Nothing against actuaries ( median salary: $113,990 ), but isn’t helping a first-grader learn to read as valuable as assessing insurance premiums on your Hyundai Elantra?

The Why Not? Project

For all the education fads of the past 50 years, researchers have found that what matters most for student learning — more than reducing class size or handing out iPads — is a high-quality teacher . One study by Harvard University economist Raj Chetty and his colleagues determined that students with effective teachers in fourth grade were more likely to attend and graduate from college as young adults and to earn more than their peers during their careers.

Some states and localities have attempted to address the compensation problem with complicated pay-for-performance schemes that award teachers bonuses hinged on student test scores. The results of those efforts have been iffy at best , scandalous at worst , said Barbara Biasi, a labor economist at Yale University. But her research has found that raising base pay for effective teachers, a simpler solution, deepens student learning and keeps good teachers on the job. Higher base pay also reduces dropout rates and narrows the achievement gap between White and Black students, as well as White and Hispanic students, according to other studies.

Raising teacher pay is also the rare 2024 policy proposal whose support spans the ideological divide. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has introduced legislation requiring a federal minimum teacher salary of $60,000 per year . Tennessee, led by Republican Gov. Bill Lee and an overwhelmingly Republican legislature, last year approved a law raising minimum teacher salaries in the state to $50,000 by 2026 .

But those well-intentioned initiatives are “take two aspirin and call me in the morning” remedies. We need a defibrillator — a serious jolt to awaken the patient from a near-death experience. A $100,000 base salary would deliver that shock.

It would also jolt public budgets. Many ideas we’ll explore in this “Why Not?” project would save money. This one is pricey.

A back-of-the-envelope calculation: If it requires about $35,000 per teacher just to raise average pay to six figures, and the United States employs more than 3 million public school teachers, the total cost would be north of $100 billion. Are you feeling defibrillated?

Although that figure represents just 5½ weeks of Medicare spending or well under half the Pentagon’s weapons budget , it’s still a massive annual sum. The federal government, which supplies about 7 percent of K-12 funding , shouldn’t finance the whole cost. It could establish a matching program to share the burden — say, $50 billion from the federal pot, $50 billion from states and localities. But that $100 billion would also likely mean raising taxes. Biasi and other scholars I spoke with questioned whether taxpayers would be willing to foot the bill.

That’s why this hefty pay raise comes with two strings attached.

First, a longer school year. Eliminating summer break might spark a national uprising among 8-year-olds and tourism-industry executives. But the nine-month school year is a relic. (Not many kids in Anacostia or Bethesda spend July tending the soybean crop and preparing for harvest.) Professionals work year-round. Teachers should, too. A longer school year could also reduce summer learning loss.

Second, greater accountability. Many teachers are excellent; some are heroic. But any parent knows that a few just aren’t up to the job. Under current employment arrangements, it’s difficult to steer these underperformers out of the profession. And with pay based largely on seniority, mediocre teachers lack much incentive to depart or even to improve. Low-performing, less-committed peers erode the morale of the majority of teachers who do their jobs well. Treating all teachers like professionals means showing a few teachers the door.

One mark of a winning idea is that it offers something for everyone to hate.

Higher taxes would enrage conservatives. Reduced job security for public employees would infuriate liberals. So far, so good!

Your ideas on education

But many complicated issues remain to be worked out. How should we adjust for differences in cost of living? How would the pay scale evolve? What are the fairest ways to evaluate teachers?

Yet even skeptical economists have a soft spot for a radical increase in teacher pay. That’s because “it calls attention to a real and pressing problem,” said Michael Addonizio, emeritus professor of education policy at Wayne State University.

Biasi, the Yale professor, a mother of two toddlers, told me, “As a parent, it strikes me as a good idea. It seems like a good use of money.”

And perhaps it would encourage talented college graduates to consider teaching instead of banking — and keep all-star educators like DiPerna in the classroom.

“I wasn’t looking to make a fortune,” DiPerna told me from his basement office between sales calls. “One hundred thousand dollars? That would have been enough for me.”
