Jersey movie review: Nani delivers a sublime performance in Gowtam Tinnanuri's emotional tour de force

There’s rarely a wrong note in Jersey, and it’s even more rare to come across a Telugu film which feels so real without being melodramatic

Jersey movie review: Nani delivers a sublime performance in Gowtam Tinnanuri's emotional tour de force

To say that Jersey  is a labour of love would be an understatement. This film isn’t just about cricket and how beautiful the game is. It isn’t just about how one man breaks all preconceived notions about ageing sportsmen. It isn’t yet another sports drama about fulfilling dreams. Jersey is the story of a man, who’s scared that he might accept his own reality and the idea that he isn’t special. It drives him crazy, and he sets out on a journey to rewrite his own legacy. It’s hard to pinpoint why Jersey works like magic. It is as sublime as Sachin Tendulkar smashing a six or Federer hitting a backhand slice.

The film has Nani playing Arjun, a swashbuckling cricketer who has his eyes on the Indian cricket team. However, when his name is dropped from the list, he decides to quit playing cricket and settles down as a government employee. His wife Sara (Shraddha Srinath) and his son Nani (Ronit) are his world now; however, a decade later, his life goes downhill. Having been suspended from his job, he struggles to make ends meet, and has to depend on his wife for his expenses. Amidst all this, the only thing that remains intact is his love for his son, Nani (Ronit). The rest of the story is about how Arjun goes back to being a cricketer.

There’s rarely a wrong note in Jersey, and it’s even more rare to come across a Telugu film which feels so real without being melodramatic. There’s a wonderful scene in the beginning of the film where Sara tells Arjun to pay the electricity bill and gives him hundred rupee note. When Arjun asks her for Rs 500 to buy a gift for their son, she rejects his request bluntly. Resigned to his fate, Arjun accepts his reality and lives with the guilt of being an unproductive member of the family. Arjun is remarkably restrained as a person, and he never lets his emotions overwhelm him, except for one sequence where he wants to scream his lungs out out of sheer joy. He’s a silent fighter, who will not speak up even if it means having to undergo humiliation and rejection. But on the cricket field, Arjun is a different person. He feels so alive that nothing else matters to him, and after resisting the idea of going back for too long, he finally convinces himself, and also the world, that he still has a lot of fire in his belly. The contrast between this two phases in Arjun’s life is uplifting to watch. That the film gently pushes you to root for Arjun, despite not knowing how good a player he was, is testimony to some wonderful writing and a stellar performance by Nani.

Gowtam Tinnanuri’s vision of Jersey is a triumph in itself. The film is set in the 1980-90s, and the muted colour tone gives Jersey an other-worldly feel to it. It turns the wheel of time to an era where the gap between dreams and reality was too big to bridge; where spending Rs 500 for something would be too much of a financial burden for a middle-class family; where accepting their fate and not wanting to fight back was normal. Several films claim to be ‘honest’ and ‘real’ in their depiction of their characters’ lives. Jersey shows us what that looks and feels like. Its beauty lies in how un-cinematic the whole film feels because Gowtam draws us into the lives of the characters of Jersey instead of just showing them on screen. In the end, their dreams become ours, their triumph becomes our collective joy.

As Arjun, Nani hits a lots of boundaries and at times, he smashes the ball out of the stadium, but that’s not all. With Jersey, the actor has catapulted himself into the stratosphere of his acting prowess, and delivered a sublime performance that will be talked about for a long time. It looks like all those hours of playing cricket have come in handy; however, it’s his performance as a father of a young boy that takes your breath away. Shraddha Srinath makes an impressive debut in Telugu with Jersey. As Sara, Shraddha brings in a lot of authenticity to her character and whether it’s her confrontation with Nani or the tears that she holds back, Shraddha stands out with her performance. Ronit, who played Nani’s son, is a brilliant casting choice and the young boy takes you by surprise every time he’s on screen. Sathyaraj delivers another wonderful performance as a coach in the film.

Anirudh Ravichander lifts the story to another level with his music while the cinematography by Sanu Varghese is stunning. Gowtam Tinnanuri brings in a different flavour of storytelling with Jersey. It could have been an inspiring story about a cricketer, whose presence inspires others in the team; however, the film isn’t about how Arjun got back on the field. It’s about why he wanted to get back and the price he was willing to pay. And there lies the masterstroke of Jersey. At a run-time of 160 minutes, Jersey packs in so many emotional moments that it’ll leave you with a heavy heart and loads of tears. It’s a blessing that this film exists in Telugu. Watch it, cherish it, and soak yourself in the world of Jersey. They don’t make such films so often these days.

Tantra Review: No Chills, No Thrills

Tantra Review: No Chills, No Thrills

Movie: Tantra Rating: 1.75/5 Banner: First Copy Movies, Be The Way Films & Vizag Film Factory Cast: Ananya Nagalla, Dhanush Raghumudri, Saloni, Temper Vamsi, Meesala Lakshman, Kushalini, Manoj Muthyam and others. Music: RR Dhruvan DOP: Sai Ram Uday & Vijay Bhaskar Saddala Editor: SB Uddhav Production Designer: Guru Murali Krishna Sound Design: Jyoti Chetia Sound Mixing: Shyamal Sikdar Producers: Naresh Babu P and Ravi Chaitanya Directed by: Srinivas Gopisetti Release Date: March 15, 2024

Ananya Nagalla, better known for films like “Vakeel Saab” and “Mallesham”, has acted in a horror thriller named “Tantra”, which hit the theaters today.

Let’s find its merits and demerits.

Story: Rekha (Ananya Nagalla), whose mother passed away when she was a young girl, receives the love and affection she desperately needs from her childhood friend Teja (Dhanush Raghumudri). They establish a romantic relationship.

Teja has observed the presence of ghosts, and he suspects that someone has been performing 'kshudra pooja' with the intention of causing harm to her.

Furthermore, it is observed that Rekha is encountering various difficulties upon the return of Vigathi (Temper Vamshi), who has been away from their village for a prolonged period of time.

On the other hand, a ghost visits Rekha every full moon day in an attempt to slake her blood thirst. What is the connection between Vigathi and Rekha, and how does the story of Rajeswari (Saloni) relate to the overall incidents?

Artistes’ Performances: Ananya Nagalla convincingly portrays the character of a naive woman tormented by supernatural entities. She particularly excels in the concluding sequences. Saloni is the unexpected revelation of the film. She demonstrates her strength in the role.

The performance of male lead Dhanush Raghumudri is satisfactory. Vamshi Temper and Lakshman Meesala have done justice to their roles.

Technical Excellence: Camera work is reasonably okay. The background score is appropriate to the theme. The editing lacks sharpness.

Highlights: Pre-climax twists

Drawback: Weak narration Boring flashback episode Lack of thrilling moments

Analysis The story of "Tantra" begins with a tale from the Ramayana, which recounts that Indrajit, the son of Ravana, possessed exceptional abilities in occult conjuring. But it was Lakshmana who successfully thwarted his tricks. Thus, Srinivas Gopisetti, the new director, has attempted to draw audiences into his horror story.

In addition, he has partitioned this film into six distinct segments, with each episode being assigned a specific title. These techniques would have enhanced the film if the latter portion of the storytelling was more captivating.

Unlike typical horror stories, "Tantra" places greater emphasis on occult practices. But, in the context of a horror drama, it is crucial to include frightening sequences and deliver thrilling moments. This one lacks them completely.

The sequences that depict ghosts roaming around Ananya Nagalla’s character and she screaming at night for her own blood don’t hrill either. Nor create interest. Much of these scenes and proceedings bore us.

Additionally, there is a lengthy episode of a flashback story that fails to be effective. While "Tantra" may have some interesting plot twists towards the end, it suffers from a lack of engaging storytelling. The new director shows potential in terms of ideas, but appears to lack the necessary narrative skills to effectively bring them to life.

In nutshell, the horror drama "Tantra" fails to deliver any frightening or thrilling moments, and its slow storytelling only worsens the overall experience.

Bottom line: Routine Horror

Avakaya: Fresh mangoes, Guntur chili magic

Tupaki Review

Tupaki Review

Behind the Movie Tupaki: While AR Murugadoss has a brand value in Andhra Pradesh, it is the presence of Vijay which could keep the hype surrounding this project a bit low. However, it is too late for a review from our side and sorry for that. Let us see, whether this 'Tupaki' has enough ammunition in it to trigger the BO or not?

In the Movie Tupaki: Jagdeesh (Vijay) is an intelligent Indian Army Officer off to Mumbai to enjoy a vacation. Family of Jagdeesh is in hunt for a right bride and they find Nisha (Kajal Agarwal) as an apt match. Although reluctant early, once Jagdeesh understands the real side of Nisha, the love track deepens. In this mean time of romance, accidentally Jagdeesh happens to bump into a sleeper cell terrorist in a local bus. Into action, Jagdeesh teams up with his old batchmates to upset the terrorist plan of 12 serial bomb blasts planned in Mumbai. Frustrated by this, the Master mind and terrorist head behind (Vidyut Jamwal) enters into scene to take it face to face with Jagdeesh. Did Vidyut's plan to lay a trap for Jadgeesh was successful? Was Jagdeesh enough talented to put an end to sleeper cell network forms the rest.

Values of the Movie Tupkai: The one invaluable quality AR Murugadoss blessed with is, his knack of commercializing aky kind of subject. In fact, none could have made this kind of gripping action thriller with a simple sleeper cell terrorist concept which isn't touched in depth by any director in India. The kind of hold Muruga has on screen-play writing was evidential throughout the second half. Our Telugu audience would easily forget that we are watching a Tamil to Telugu dubbed film because of the intensity packed. Meanwhile, the romantic track weaved into the story is actually a weak thread which distrubed the actual soul and feel. Cinematography of Santosh Sivan is just top notch and Sreekar Prasad could have been better in the boring love track. After enjoying extra-ordinary tunes and exhilarating back-ground from Harris Jayaraj, we expect much more than this. Dialogues were just okay. Production values of Gemini FIlm Circuit and SVR Media are worth appreciable.

Performance wise, Vijay's character has been underplayed for major time and that has become the blessing in disguise. Compared to past flicks like 'Snehithudu,' the way Vijay directed his energies into simple yet stylish action episodes made him a winner. Next in the list comes is Vidyut Jamwal. Utilizing the biggest of opportunity offered, Vidyut's muscular body and handsome looks give a new flavor to villainsm. The less we speak, it would be more better about Kajal who is just portioned for songs and romance. Of the remaining we can only remind, Sathyan and Jairam who were just fit to their comic portions.

Out of the Movie Tupaki: The best memories which striked my thoughts watching 'Tupaki' were about Venkatesh's 'Gharshana.' Director Muruga has cooked a recipee which is similar to Gautham. Yet, both are different in their own versions. Scripts like 'Tupaki' need more of the hardwork on visualization. When you are presenting the same on screen in the form of mind games between antagonist and protagonist, viewers should feel the goose bumps else your attempts go in vain. When we have some one like Muruga leading from front, even the expression face like Vijay too becomes engaging. Same happened here and Vijay might find some part of his dream to form a market in Tollywood will be fulfilled.

While first half is a bit entertaining with romantic track, introduction to sleeper cells in Mumbai, narration changes the gear and suddenly we get too much involved into the bloodshed of pre-interval episodes. Then second half is entirely the magic of Murugadoss while the tasteless love episodes and placement of songs pulls down the anxiety. So, overall the graph goes up and down till a much more desired climax.

Commercially, 'Tupaki' might be a profitable project in Tamil because of Vijay factor. When target audience for this kind of action thrillers form a low minortiy core, it is difficult to anticipate on where the Telugu version will land. For regular audience, think before getting in and for hardcore Muruga admirers, don't miss this. He has got ammunition right this time.

Cinejosh Verdict of the Movie Tupaki: Best Action Thriller in recent times.

Bhimaa Movie Review

' Bhimaa ' Movie Review

Cast : Gopi Chand, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Malavika Sharma, Mukesh Tiwari, Nasser, Naresh, Poorna, Vennela Kishore, Raghubabu, Rohini and others.

Music : Ravi Basrur

Cinematography : Swamy Gouda

Dialogues : Ajju Mahakali

Producer : KK Radhamohan

Writer – Director : A Harsha

Senior hero Gopichand has been waiting for a good hit since a long time. He teamed up with Kannada director A Harsha and did 'Bhimaa'. The teaser and trailer promised a complete mass entertainer with a touch of fantasy. It has arrived in theatres today and let us see if the movie puts an end to Gopichand long wait for success or not.

Bhavani (Mukhesh Tiwari) is a dictator who keeps an entire area in the Andhra-Karnataka border under his grip. His atrocities made the entire crowd tremble in fear. An SI who tries to stop Bhavani gets killed. This leads to Bhimaa (Gopichand), a new SI getting appointed in that area. He beats Bhavani's men and orders them to surrender within a month. In the meanwhile, he starts solving the problems of villagers. In this process, he stops Bhavani's oil tanker once but finds that he is illegally transporting children as a part of his business. He finds out that there is a huge scam behind this. What it? Who is behind this? How did 'Bhimaa' put an end to it forms the rest of the story.

Whenever an experiment becomes successful in a language, all the others try to imitate it. They pick up the main point of that hit film and come up with their own versions of it. But not all of them work well at the box office. The team of 'Bhimaa' took the fantasy element in 'Kantara' and tried to include it in their mass storyline. It backfired badly and left everyone in huge disappointment. The movie is filled with routine and silly scenes throughout but the fantasy element is added at the start and at the very end. Gopichand mark fight sequences are added to the lot as well. They made it into a mixture of different elements. Though the action episodes that suited the body language of Gopichand impresses you, the wavered screenplay, boring romantic track and pale love story make this an uninteresting fare. The fantasy element is also a huge letdown in this movie.

Heroine who looks too glamorous and indulges in heavy skin show works as a teacher in the school. A guy threatens to throw acid on her if she doesn't love him back. She complains to the hero who is an SI and he decides to go with her as a bodyguard. The guy with an acid bottle is in fact a comedy fellow and doesn't dare to do anything. But the hero follows the heroine around citing the acid guy as the reason. Hero creepily watches the heroine's behind and heroine signals him not to do it. He even enters the heroine's hostel and gets into her bedroom directly. Looking at the hero all the girls in the heroine's hostel get ready to give their everything. This is the highly dragged love track in the first half of 'Bhimaa'. After showing the hero and heroine in this manner, the director tried to project that they are working on a bigger cause and don't mind losing their loves in this process. The audiences find it tough to take these characters seriously.

Introducing the hero and villain with a huge buildup and bringing the intensity down in the immediate scene and showing their heroism along with villainism whenever an action scene comes doesn't sit well with the proceedings. People expect something different from this movie after the initial scenes involving Parasurama Kshetram. But the movie completely goes on sidetrack as soon as the hero enters the scene. The romance and comedy track takes centre stage thereby starting the torture to the audience. One fails to understand which way this movie is going till the interval. The huge action episode before the interval manages to keep the mass audience engaged.

Things go back to their usual way once the second half begins. The scenes that showcase the new side of the hero test the patience of the audience. When the normal audience are unable to figure out where the story is going, how can he enjoy the film? The flashback scenes of the hero do not engage you at all. The point that was showcased in relation to the villain takes away the small bit of interest that is left in the minds of the audience. The fantasy element is unnecessarily forced into the storyline. All it did was bring a bit of grandeur and visual appeal to the movie. The climax action sequence was well executed. Barring those 2-3 action sequences, the movie is tough to handle. 'Bhimaa' is a bit better compared to Gopichand's last movie 'Rama Banam' but it does not satisfy the audience at all. A few mass lovers of Gopichand might like this movie.

Performance :

Gopichand grew a beard for this film and changed his look. He looked handsome as usual. He played the two shades quite impressively. He suited the role perfectly and his appearance was on point too. But he did not do anything different and delivered all the mass elements expected from him. His oora mass fights too looked routine this time. None of the heroines managed to leave a lasting impression. Despite having less screen time, Priya Bhavani Shankar did well in terms of acting. Malavika Sharma is used just for glamour but the way she has been presented is not that great. She is made to expose without any proper situation or reason in this film. Nasser's role starts off in one way and takes a turn which is quite predictable. Mukhesh Tiwari and other villains are quite ordinary. Vennela Kishore gets good screen time but fails to make people laugh. Actors like Raghubabu and Naresh were strictly okay.

Technicians :

'Bhimaa' is strictly passable on the technical front. Ravi Basrur's music is loud as expected. His background music is resounding but he failed to elevate the movie. There were a few scenes that lacked substance and re-recording sounds too much there. None of the songs are highly impressive. Swamy Gowda's camerawork is adequate as the movie's visuals do not offer freshness. The production values are quite good. Ajju Mahakali's dialogues work at places. Writer and director Harsha is highly influenced by Kannada movies. 'Bhimaa' is way too loud and he focused more on the action sequences. He failed to explain the story in plain tempo. He only managed to showcase Gopichand in a different manner which will be liked by the masses but he failed as a director in many aspects.

Verdict : Bhimaa – Mass Touch To A Boring Drama!

Rating : 2.25/5
