Description

This PPT can be used in the physical or online. It includes:

  • Warm Up Game: Students can play individually or in teams, brainstorming words in categories beginning with different letters.
  • Presentation: Explanation for Present tense with a list of common verbs. Explanation of how to change regular and irregular verbs to the past tense. Colourful slides show the present simple sentence, then reveal the past simple, i.e. "I eat a sandwich", "I ate a sandwich." Teacher can explain that we use present simple for habits, like "I go to school every Monday", but we use the past simple for something that happened before, like "I went to school yesterday."
  • Vocabulary Practice: A simple Tic-Tac-Toe game to encourage students to speak out loud and use the grammar.
  • Grammar Practice: A task where students have to find the mistakes in the sentences.
  • Conversation Practice: Students sit in a circle and listen to each other say something they did last weekend, and have to remember what was said.
  • Holiday Text: They read the story about my holiday in Thailand last summer, but orally have to change the sentences to past tense. After revealing the answers, students are then supposed to write their own story with the verbs we have studied today about what they did last summer.

This PowerPoint is a 1-2 hour long lesson for elementary/intermediate English learners.
