1980 review: Good plot, let down by drab execution, despite Priyanka Upendra’s effort to uplift it
Novelist Priya moves to serene Appshethalli along with her young son, at a time when the village is grappling with the mysterious disappearance of a few residents. Under strange circumstances, Priya realizes that she will also be a victim. Can she prevent it?

Story: In 1980, novelist and photographer Priya heads to scenic Appshethalli to find inspiration for her next literary work. There, she finds herself in grave danger. Is there a way out?
Review: According to most sci-fi works, messing with the space-time continuum can have disastrous effects, but not so in this week’s Kannada release 1980, which dropped today on NammaFlix. This is a film that explores the possibility of parallel universes, wherein Priya, who is in 1980, is able to converse with Sanvi in 2020, over a telephone.
In the course of their conversations, though, Priya realizes that the spate of mysterious disappearances in Appshethalli is set to hit closer home. As a novelist with a sharp mind and attention to detail, can she figure out a way to prevent certain things from happening in her immediate future? This sums up the crux of 1980, written and directed by Rajkiran.
In principle, the existence of parallel universes is an interesting concept. To be fair, the makers have managed to weave together an intriguing narrative leading to this. But despite their best efforts, most notably by lead actress Priyanka Upendra, it just doesn’t take flight. This was a subject that could have soared high, but hovers just above ground level. It does not crash and burn, so you are left with a film that has a good plot, but is let down by drab execution.
The wigs of the men in 1980 were just bad and at one point in the climax, I lost count trying to keep up with the continuity issue of whether Priya hurt her left leg or right, only to miraculously heal after hobbling around for a while. It also took a mammoth effort to stay awake for the entire proceeding.
Verdict: A cosmic event creating a portal and the possibility of parallel universes should have made for an immensely engrossing tale. Unfortunately, despite Priyanka’s best efforts, it fails to strike a chord. If you are not in the mood to step out to theatres this festive weekend, 1980 is your next bet. It doesn’t top our list of recommendations, though.

Priyanka Upendra’s upcoming film '1980' will be an exclusive OTT release
Priyanka Upendra’s upcoming film, 1980 directed by debutant Rajkiran J, is set to be an exclusive OTT release. The film will be out on Namma Flix on October 15. An official announcement was made by the production house at the trailer launch event, which had actors Sudeep and Upendra gracing it. Talking about her first OTT release, Priyanka says, “1980 was a project, which was ready four months ago, and obviously like every other filmmaker, we were also looking for a big-screen release. We have been patiently waiting for theatres to reopen, but things are still bleak. So we decided to go with a digital release.”
“Kannada has not been a priority for popular streaming channels, and I wonder why. I have seen regional films of other languages have the same kind of making like our films, but the former has been given priority. So, we decided to go with a homegrown app. If this works, it will open the door for other films, who are wanting a channel to release their films. Secondly, there is a sector of audiences who are particular about watching only Kannada movies, and 1980 will cater to all those viewers,” says Priyanka.
1980 has a parallel concept-based core, and this is what attracted Priyanka to the film. “I play a novelist, and all my portions are set in 1980. The retro look and feel gave a whole new dimension to my character,” says Priyanka, adding, “It was an interesting role conceived by Rajkiran. The script was content-driven, and I enjoyed the shooting process,” she says.
The film, which bears the caption ‘A Demon’s era’, is being made under the banner of RK Productions. It will have music by Chintan Vikas and cinematography by Jeeva Antony. Meanwhile, Priyanka also has Life is Beautiful, and Ugravatara in the post-production stages.

Kaiva Kannada Movie Review: Step into the gritty underworld of 1980s Bengaluru with ‘Kaiva’—a tale of love, revenge, and a city’s untold secrets. Brace yourself for a rollercoaster ride through time and emotions!
Kaiva Kannada Movie Review:
Talkiescorner.com Ratings – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ | 3/5
“Kaiva,” a Kannada film directed by Jayathirtha, takes audiences on a time-travel journey to 1980s Bengaluru, blending a poignant love story with the gritty underworld. As the narrative unfolds, it weaves through the realms of mythology, culture, and real-life incidents, creating a unique cinematic experience.
Cast and Crew:
The film boasts a talented cast with Dhanveerah essaying the titular role of Kaiva and Megha Shetty portraying Salma. Supported by notable actors like Raghu Shimoga, Nanda, Uggramm Manju, Karthik Jayaram, Janhavi, and Dinakar Toogudeepa, the ensemble brings depth to the characters. Director Jayathirtha’s vision is complemented by the evocative cinematography of Shwet Priya Naik and a soul-stirring musical score by Ajaneesh Loknath.
About Kaiva Movie:
“Kaiva” transcends conventional storytelling by incorporating the legend of Goddess Draupadamma, linking it to the inception of the Bengaluru Karaga tradition. The film revolves around Kaiva, a young man seeking justice for his girlfriend, Salma, who becomes a victim of a heinous crime. The narrative navigates the challenges of love, revenge, and the ruthless underworld in 1980s Bengaluru.
Kaiva’s life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Salma during the iconic Karaga festival. A miscommunication leads to a horrifying incident of sexual assault and an acid attack on Salma. Fueled by an unwavering determination for justice, Kaiva delves into the perilous world of Bengaluru’s underworld. The film skillfully juxtaposes Draupadi’s tale with Kaiva’s quest for retribution, creating a narrative that is both culturally rich and emotionally compelling.
The plot intricately weaves two parallel worlds — the tender love story between Kaiva and Salma and the ruthless criminal underworld of Thigalarapete. As Kaiva navigates the seedy underbelly of Bengaluru’s crime scene, the film draws parallels to real-life incidents from the ’80s. The clash of these two worlds forms the crux of the story, leading to a major twist that adds layers of complexity to the narrative.

Performances:
Dhanveerah’s portrayal of Kaiva is nothing short of exceptional. His nuanced performance captures the character’s vulnerability, determination, and the raw intensity required for the role. Megha Shetty, despite having no dialogues, delivers a captivating performance through expressive gestures and her ability to emote with her eyes. The antagonists, played by Raghu Shimoga, Nanda, and Uggramm Manju, bring an ominous presence, adding depth to the conflict.
Technical Aspects:
The technical brilliance of “Kaiva” lies in its ability to recreate the ambiance of 1980s Bengaluru. Shwet Priya Naik’s cinematography evokes nostalgia, capturing the essence of the era with finesse. Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score enhances the film’s intensity, though the songs could have been more impactful. The attention to detail in production design and the seamless editing contribute to the film’s overall authenticity.
Plus Points:
“Kaiva” scores high on its ability to transport the audience to the ’80s, offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The incorporation of Draupadi’s tale adds a unique cultural layer to the narrative. Dhanveerah’s powerful performance and Megha Shetty’s emotive portrayal contribute significantly to the film’s emotional depth. The film’s well-crafted scenes and the authentic depiction of Bengaluru’s underworld are commendable.
Minus Points:
While “Kaiva” excels in many aspects, it does have its drawbacks. Some critics argue that the screenplay and characters lack the depth needed to fully engage the audience. The excessive focus on graphic violence, especially in portraying negative characters, has garnered criticism for its lack of sensitivity. The narrative’s attempt to blend a poetic love story with a revenge tale falls short in maintaining a consistent tone.
“Kaiva” attempts a delicate balance between two disparate genres — a nostalgic love story and a gritty underworld drama. However, the film struggles to maintain a cohesive narrative, leading to a dichotomy in its approach. The infusion of Draupadi’s tale, while culturally rich, at times feels disconnected from Kaiva’s modern-day quest for justice. This thematic duality, though ambitious, results in a narrative that lacks the necessary depth to seamlessly integrate both elements.
The characters, while well-portrayed by the cast, suffer from one-dimensionality. The protagonists are somewhat mundane, and the antagonists, although menacing, lack the complexity needed to make them truly compelling. The film’s attempt to mirror real-life incidents from the ’80s adds an intriguing layer, but the lack of proper integration into the central narrative leaves these elements feeling disjointed.
The film’s technical brilliance shines in its ability to recreate the 1980s setting convincingly. However, the execution falters in delivering a consistent emotional impact. While certain scenes are crafted exceptionally well, the overall pacing of the film, particularly in the first half, feels sluggish. The movie only gains momentum in the second half, leaving the audience with a “too little, too late” sentiment.
The decision to delve into graphic violence and portray negative characters with a lack of nuance has stirred controversy. In an attempt to create a “raw and brutal” love story, the film sometimes sacrifices sensitivity, leading to discomfort for some viewers. The film’s tonal inconsistencies and occasional reliance on clichés detract from its potential to deliver a more profound cinematic experience.

“Kaiva” stands as a unique experiment in Kannada cinema, blending elements of mythology, real-life incidents, and a love story set against the backdrop of Bengaluru’s underworld. While the film excels in recreating the ambiance of the ’80s and offers moments of emotional depth, its thematic dichotomy and inconsistent execution prevent it from reaching its full potential. Dhanveerah’s standout performance and the film’s nostalgic charm make it a worthwhile watch for those seeking a trip down memory lane, but its flaws may leave some viewers yearning for a more refined cinematic experience.

A movie that speaks the absolute truth about the judiciary in our country. The absolute disconnect between the person seeking justice and the ways of the Judiciary is portrayed wonderfully. The lawyers not appearing in the court to put off a hearing is a normal procedure as per advocates. The lack of accountability in the justice system is the only trigger needed for corruption. This is a known fact by all but is pushed under the carpet. This is the highlight of the movie!

Brilliant performance, excellent star cast. Great story, absolutely relatable. Kannada industry making such gems of movie is really laudable. Even though the movie stumbles at certain areas but overall good effort

Best Horror Movies of 2024 Ranked – New Scary Movies to Watch
Welcome to the best horror movies of 2024, ranking every dark and dreary delight coming out this year by Tomatometer! We start the list with Certified Fresh films (these movies have maintained a high Tomatometer score after enough critics reviews), followed by the pulp-pounding Fresh movies (these are rated at least 60%), and then concluding with the morbidly Rotten.
In 2023 , horror kicked off in a big way with M3GAN. There wasn’t a breakout hit in early 2024, with the major genre releases being Out of Darkness, the COVID-shot Paleolithic thriller Out of Darkness , and the Diablo Cody-penned Lisa Frankenstein , set in the same world as her cult comedy Jennifer’s Body .
New horror movies for 2024 on the horizon include They Follow (sequel to It Follows , with Maika Monroe and writer/director David Robert Mitchell returning), MaXXXine (Ti West’s closing his trilogy after X and Pearl ), Terrifier 3 (Art the Clown expands his spree into Christmas ), Nosferatu (from director Robert Eggers), Alien: Romulus (due in August), A Quiet Place: Day One (June), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (September), Return to Silent Hill (original director Christophe Gans returns as well), The Conjuring: Last Rites (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their Warren roles).
