PhD or Doctor of Philosophy courses is offered on numerous streams. Science, Arts and Humanities, and Management are some of the major streams of a PhD. A large number PhD courses are there in India. The stream wise syllabus for some of the PhD courses is mentioned in the table below:

By learning the PhD subjects of a particular domain students develop strong methodological skills that are needed to perform the research. These PhD course subjects work as a background for their research paper. Students can check out the list of subjects for some major Doctor of Philosophy specializations in the given table:

The PhD subjects included as optional papers help in improving the understanding ability. For a challenging course like Doctor of Philosophy, optional subjects help to balance the load of learning. It introduces some subjects that the students might not have studied ever. An important benefit is that these subjects make the learners more skilled in the field. With the added advantage of additional learning, students get the scope of increasing their knowledge of their domain and related areas.

While selecting these subjects, students should consider their interest and confidence in the subject as important factors. There is a large number of optional subjects in the PhD course syllabus. Optional of two major Doctor of Philosophy courses are listed below:

Being a traditional higher-level academic course, the Doctor of Philosophy comes with a vast range of specializations. Therefore, for the PhD aspirants, the options are abundant. Be it a science stream or the Arts stream, students have immense opportunities for earning a degree in their subject of interest. Students can check out the below-given lists to know about the kind of PhD specializations available in Indian colleges or universities. Among a large number of specializations, only a few are mentioned below:

PhD entrance exams are conducted at both national and institute levels. The students who score a minimum of 50% marks are allowed to seat for the entrance test. The universities/institutes want to test a students’ understanding level of the subject he/she wants to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The course has been traditionally preferred by students who want to avail research studies in their post-graduate subject. In the present century, the number of individuals doing PhD has increased a lot.

India is giving some excellent research opportunities to post-graduate students. The universities want to enrol only talented students in their Doctor of Philosophy courses. Here comes the importance of the PhD entrance test. Some popular entrance tests are CSIR UGC NET , UGC NET, etc. A list of PhD syllabus for the entrance exam is tabulated below:

Books play a pivotal role to complete a course like a PhD. Immense information is required for the research work involved in this course. Therefore, students need to be updated on their research topics. PhD students should take help from subject-oriented books. Usually, a Guide who supervises the students in their research work, recommends books. However, here is a list of books on research methodology that the PhD students can refer to complete the course with ease:

Once the students get enrolled in a PhD course, they are required to prepare and submit their research topic and the proposal of research. Then the institutes from where a student pursues the course allocate a guide to the students. Once the students get a Guide, he/she informs the PhD course syllabus, course work, teaching schedule, and assessment technique. Usually, in most universities or institutes students require to submit their work reports at an interval of six months. Another important part of the PhD course is seminar presentations. A student pursuing this course mandatorily gives at least two seminars and then submits his/her Certificate to the Research Unit. The next phase is thesis submission. Before making the final submission of the thesis, students require to publish one research paper in a peer-reviewed journal. This Certificate is also required to submit to the Research Unit. A Pre-Seminar Submission is organized by the Guide before the final submission of the thesis.

Based on the performance, a report is prepared and submitted. The students get some valuable suggestions for improvement and they incorporate them into the final thesis. Then they prepare a summary of the thesis which they need to submit 45 days before the thesis submission. Once the thesis is finally submitted, it is examined by the experts and students must take part in the viva-voce where they can express their perspectives before the group of experts. Those who successfully get through all these phases are awarded a PhD Degree. In brief, we can structure the Doctor of Philosophy course in the following structure:

·   Submission of Research Proposal

·   Research Report

·   Seminar

·   Certificate Submission

·   Publication of one research paper

·   Pre-seminar submission

·   Thesis Submission

·   Viva Voce

Insights into CUET 2024: In-depth analysis of CUET test pattern

The national testing agency, nta will conduct the common university entrance test for undergraduates (cuet ug) 2024 between may 15 and 31. here's an overview of the syllabus, exam pattern, and preparation tips for cuet ug..

Listen to Story

Navigating CUET 2024: Key insights into test pattern, important topics

With board exams for Class 12 fast approaching closure, it is time for students to turn their focus towards getting into the best possible UG programmes.

Out of the various options available, getting into the graduate programmes offered by the various central universities via the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is at the top of the list for many students, more so for those from non-science backgrounds.

In this article, we will understand the CUET (UG) - its tests, test patterns, universities that consider its score and various other details.

About 15 lakh candidates registered for the CUET (UG) exam in 2023. The number is expected to further go up this year given the wide range of universities and programmes offered by them. The key to standing out and having a better chance at getting the college of one's choice is to understand the sections in which students will be tested.

Once the candidates have checked their eligibility for the university and the course they are interested in, the next step is to understand the specific subjects in which CUET tests are to be taken as specified by the eligibility requirements of the program chosen. Some programs may need only the 'General test'. Some may need some 'languages' along with the general test, some only 'Domain subjects' and some a combination of all three.

There are 27 domain subjects to choose from, along with a plethora of languages of the students' choice, and a general test. There is also a choice in the medium (13 languages) in which students wish to appear in the exam, which is not limited to just English. One can increase the chances of selection by applying for multiple universities and courses, as, one can appear for up to 10 subjects.

Once the specific tests to be taken are arrived at, the syllabus of these tests is to be understood. Getting to know the syllabus is of paramount importance for success in this paper. The syllabus can be found on the official website of CUET for each subject. To make things easier, for languages and domain subjects, it will be the same as the class 12 syllabus that students have already studied in school. So, the effort that would be required to do well in their Board Examinations will also help candidates to prepare well for CUET. For the General test too, it is school-level aptitude that will be required.

Having a strong command over the basics of domain subjects will be the game changer as all students would have gone through the syllabus in preparation for their board exams.

DURATION OF THE TEST

The language test and most subject tests are of 45 minutes duration each. The general test and specific subjects like (Accountancy, Economics, Physics, Computer Science / Informatics Practices, Chemistry, Mathematics / Applied Mathematics) will be of one-hour duration.

Language will be tested through Reading Comprehension (based on different types of passages-Factual, Literary, and Narrative. The general test includes General Knowledge, Current Affairs, General Mental Ability, Numerical Ability, Quantitative Reasoning (Simple application of basic mathematical concepts, arithmetic/algebra, geometry/mensuration/statistics taught till Grade 8), and Logical and Analytical Reasoning.

All of these topics require a mix of knowledge and reasoning ability, including common sense and application of mind. A good reading habit of fictional/nonfictional literature and newspapers will certainly enhance your chances to comprehend and attempt the questions in the allotted time.

Time management will also play a key role in a candidate's success in completing the exam. It is advisable to practice some questions in a similar interface as that of the actual test before appearing for the main exam so that candidates are comfortable with navigation during the test and get familiar with what lies ahead.

An important point to be kept in mind is that there is nothing to be scared of CUET because the very concept and spirit of this unified exam is to be more inclusive and give equal opportunities to candidates all over the country from every background, irrespective of their past academic performance. Based on the previous two year's papers, it could be said that the level of difficulty will not be high as is seen in most national-level competitive exams.

However, all the questions will be multiple choice and there will be negative marking. So, one needs to be careful in choosing the correct option and take only calculated risks in case of questions that one is not too sure about. Rest assured that, with a little faith in self and a cool mind, one can easily crack this exam and get the campus of choice.
