A Detailed LPN Cover Letter Example

Licensed practical nurses work in hospitals and clinics providing care and comfort to patients. As an LPN you know that patients will usually see you more often than they do their physicians or other care providers. It’s a busy, but rewarding profession.

But how do you get the attention of hiring managers when there are so many nurses competing for a single position? Primarily, your application packet must be stellar. That starts with your cover letter.

Below are your tips for writing a compelling job application with an LPN cover letter sample you can use for inspiration.

Anticipate The Employer’s Questions

Peruse every job listing carefully. As you do, jot down all the key skills and requirements mentioned. In most cases, your new employer will want to know if you have some of the following qualifications:

  • Specific clinical skills
  • Required experience
  • Communication skills
  • Critical thinking and decision-making capabilities
  • Empathy and a good bedside manner
  • The ability to work well in a team setting to prioritize patient outcomes
  • Endurance to do the job
  • A track record of following health protocols and proper procedures

Optimize For Applicant Tracking Systems

If you apply to a smaller clinic or a doctor’s office, your cover letter will go directly to the hiring authority. But, if you are pitching your candidacy to a large hospital, or major healthcare network, you’ll have to get past an invisible gatekeeper – the applicant tracking software.

ATS is a special system that scans your resume, cover letter, and other documents for relevant keywords to ensure that you are image. For example, when a dialysis center is hiring an LPN, they’ll want someone experienced in working with kidney patients. Thus, the applicant tracking system will be configured to look for phrases like pre-dialysis patient assessment.

Connections and Referrals Are Key

This tip is a bit of a departure. Think about your overall job search. Before your cover letter and resume can help land an interview, you have to find the best opportunities. Feel free to look through standard job listings, but also consider the alternatives. One thing to consider is your list of network connections. In most communities, people in healthcare tend to run in tight-knit circles. Let a few people in your LinkedIn list or alumni connections know you are searching for a job. There’s a good chance that you may learn about some ‘unadvertised’ job openings.

if somebody in your network does connect to a job opportunity, mention them in your cover letter. This will create a sense of familiarity with the hiring manager.

Emphasize Continuing Education

Healthcare technologies, regulations, and treatment protocols are changing rapidly. A nurse who stops learning will quickly become ineffective. Let hiring managers know that you want to continue your education. Mention any efforts you are making to improve your skills in your letter.

Include Letters of Recommendation

What can you do to help secure a position when you are a recent graduate without much experience? Contact your nursing school instructors and the healthcare providers where you did your clinicals. Ask them if they would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for you. This can be a real asset when your application packet would otherwise be a bit thin.

LPN Cover Letter Example – Text Format

Dear Doctor Gray,

My name is Kath Ninja, and I am a recent graduate of Southbridge Allied Healthcare Academy. I received my associate’s degree in licensed practical nursing with a specialization in geriatric caregiving, I have completed my clinicals, and am fully licensed by the state of New Jersey. I learned about the opening for an LPN at Shady Oaks Nursing Home from my clinicals coordinator Jason Smith. And I believe the experience I have will make me a valuable addition to your team.

Prior to becoming an LPN, I worked as a CNA for People’s Community Nursing And Rehabilitation Center. There, I provided basic care and assistance to elderly clients, many of whom suffered from memory issues and lack of mobility.

My duties at ‘People’s Community Nursing And Rehabilitation Center’ include assisting patients with bathing and daily hygiene needs, moving patients, taking vitals, starting IV medications, intubating patients, and communicating with other team members about patients’ needs and conditions.

I am very interested in combining my education as an LPN with my previous healthcare experience. I think that I would be an excellent fit at Shady Oaks Nursing Home. Currently, I have open availability for interviews, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Final Tip: Cast a Wide Net When Searching For a Job

Work as an LPN is often associated with nursing homes, assisted living facilities, even in-home care. However, as you look for a job, consider other career options.

A licensed practical nurse may be able to find work in hospital emergency rooms, labor and delivery, rehabilitation centers, and in public health. Keep in mind that your options may be more open than you think.

Then, introduce yourself and state the position you're applying for. Immediately highlight your qualifications and experience relevant to the job. For instance, "As a Licensed Practical Nurse with 5 years of experience in providing high-quality patient care in a hospital setting, I am excited to apply for the LPN position at your facility." This not only shows your enthusiasm for the role but also gives the hiring manager a snapshot of your qualifications right from the start.

Licensed Practical Nurses should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their qualifications. They should express enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the healthcare team and provide excellent patient care. It's also important to thank the hiring manager for their time and consideration. For example: "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my skills and dedication to your team and am confident in my ability to provide excellent care to your patients. Highlight these skills and explain how they make you a strong candidate for the position. 3. Discuss Education and Training: If you're a recent graduate, discuss your education and training. Mention any clinical rotations or internships you've completed, and discuss what you learned during these experiences. Even if you haven't worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse, these experiences still provide valuable hands-on experience. 4. Show Enthusiasm: Show your enthusiasm for the job and the field of nursing. Discuss why you're interested in the job and how you plan to contribute to the organization. 5. Professionalism: Remember to maintain a professional tone throughout the letter. Use formal language, and proofread carefully to avoid any errors. 6. Closing: In your closing paragraph, thank the hiring manager for considering your application. Express your interest in the opportunity to interview and learn more about the position. Remember, everyone has to start somewhere. Even without direct experience, your passion, dedication, and willingness to learn can make you a strong candidate for the job.

  • Call to Action: Conclude the cover letter with a clear call to action. Indicate your availability for an interview or express your interest in discussing the opportunity further. Encourage the reader to contact you to schedule a meeting or provide any additional information they may require.
  • Complimentary Closing: Choose a professional and appropriate complimentary closing to end your cover letter, such as "Sincerely," "Best Regards," or "Thank you." Ensure the closing reflects the overall tone and formality of the letter.
  • Signature: Below the complimentary closing, leave space for your handwritten signature. Sign your name in ink using a legible and professional style. If you are submitting a digital or typed cover letter, you can simply type your full name.
  • Typed Name: Beneath your signature, type your full name in a clear and readable font. This allows for easy identification and ensures clarity in case the handwritten signature is not clear.

What to Include in Your Nursing Cover Letter

Did you learn how to write business letters in school? Have you forgotten everything about how to format them? You’re not alone - we’ve got your back here at Nurse.org.

Let's go through the basic format of a nursing cover letter that can be used at any stage of your professional development, including entry-level and specialty changes.

The header is simple; it’s just contact information for both you and the hiring organization. The basic format is:

Phone Number

Email Address

Street Address

  • City, ST, Zip Code

Hiring Manager (Use name if possible)

  • Healthcare Organization

The best advice here is to find out the hiring manager's name so you can personalize the greeting.

How to find out the name of a hiring manager:

  • If you have a connection in the organization, ask who will review your application.
  • Review the company website or LinkedIn to find the manager or director for the position.
  • Call the Human resources department. This can be hit or miss, but it's worth a shot if you haven't found the right person.

Generic greetings should be your last resort. If you've tried and still can't find the name, "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Nursing Recruitment Team" will work. You'll wow them with the rest of your letter.

Paragraph #1: Opening

In the opening paragraph, identify the position you're applying for and briefly state why you're a good fit. HR and hiring managers often look at resumes for several positions, so this is a chance to remind them that you are applying for X opportunity. It signals the hiring manager to read the rest of your letter and resume with that position in mind.

Paragraph #2: Background & Qualifications

Your qualifications paragraph is the most important one in your cover letter. Briefly summarize your background, skills, and traits that make you the perfect candidate for the position in about 2-3. Use keywords from the posted job description that complement your skill set. You can also use bullet points to make this paragraph stand out.

Note for new grads: All of your background experience is valuable. Suppose you don't have healthcare-specific work experience. In that case, you can highlight customer service skills, eagerness to learn new processes, and highlights from nursing school clinical experiences.

Notes for nurses transitioning to new specialties: Give a brief career synopsis and highlight the skills you think will best transfer to the new specialty. Emphasize strengths that align with the job position posting.

Paragraph #3: Compliment the Organization

Your final paragraph shows you're serious about the position. Research the organization and state why you want to join their team. You can find great information and keywords to use on the job post or their website.

Closing the Nursing Cover Letter

Your closing sentence is brief and invites further conversation. Restate your contact information and Invite the hiring manager to discuss the role further. Then, add in a final closure and your signature. Congratulations,  your letter is complete!

The closure should be respectful and professional. Examples include

  • Respectfully
  • Sincerely yours
  • Yours truly
  • With warm regards
  • Best regards

How to List Your Nursing Credentials

It’s easy to get confused about how to list your nursing credentials. The correct way to sign your name with credentials is:

[Name], [Highest level of education completed], [License type], [Certifications]

Jane completed an associate degree and is a Registered Nurse without other certifications (yet). Her signature is Jane Doe, ADN, RN

If Jane goes on to complete her BSN and Pediatric certification, her signature changes to: Jane Doe, BSN, RN, CPN

We’ve got templates below to help you get started, but first let’s review some common mistakes you should avoid.

6 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing Your Nursing Cover Letter

Writing a great nursing cover letter may seem daunting, but the process does get easier with practice. Here are a few common nursing cover letter mistakes and pitfalls to avoid.

1. Leaving Grammatical Errors and Typos

Most programs have some spell and grammar check capabilities, but don't rely on them alone. Websites such as grammarly.com offer free proofreading and grammar review. Make sure to review that all names are correctly spelled.

2. Using a Generic Greeting

Do your research to find the hiring manager’s name. If you can’t find it, open the letter with “Dear Hiring Manager.” Avoid “To whom it may concern” at all costs.

3. Forgetting to add Keywords

Read the job description carefully. Find keywords that relate to your experience and use them throughout the cover letter.

4. Not Following Instructions

Follow any specific requirements listed in the job description or application website. If the listing says to upload your cover letter as a PDF, save your document as a PDF before submitting it.

This is your first test to see if you pay attention to detail and follow directions. Don't fail before you even get started!!

5. Using the Same Cover Letter for Different Jobs

Each position and organization are unique; don’t repeatedly use the same letter. However, you also don't need to start from scratch each time!

Save your cover letters as you write them so they’re available to edit next time. Highlight different skills if needed. Make it personal to the new position by including keywords from the job listing.

6. Forgetting to Proofread and Edit

Notice how #1 and #6 are almost identical? It’s on purpose - proofreading is the most critical aspect of writing. Here are some tips to help you make sure your cover letter is perfect:

Read your letter out loud. Does it make sense? Do any of the sentences sound strange when you read them out loud?

Walk away . Putting a bit of time between writing and finalizing your edits can make a world of difference in the final draft.

Enlist a friend. Ask a  trusted friend, career advisor, or faculty member to read the letter before you hit send.

How to create a good cover letter for a licensed practical nurse (lpn): free tips and tricks

When you’re applying for a job, all details are important along the way. Given that recruiters are overloaded with job applications, it is important to make a good first impression so that you could move on the path and get to an employer. Use our advice and you’ll craft your job-winning letter in no time. In addition, have a look at the (LPN) licensed practical nurse cover letter example below.

Format your letter properly. Use a readable font type (Arial 11-14). Separate paragraphs with correct spacing. When in doubt, use a template for business letters. Remember to add your contacts.

Don’t devalue the practice of writing. If you’re at a loss as to what to write about, don’t repeat your resume. Give yourself plenty of time to write and rewrite until you get a great result.

Three paragraphs are more than enough. Show your interest in the impressive introduction. Mention briefly your experience and a few accomplishments. Conclude with a reassurance that you’re the perfect fit for the role. Don’t worry that your document is short. This is the most common layout.

Don’t make excuses. Even if you don’t feel confident because you’re entry level, don’t show it in the letter. Gather as many relevant experiences and skills for the position as possible. Shift the focus on your strong sides. Remember the most important thing is to match your skills to the job.

Optimize your letter with keywords. To minimize their workload, hiring specialists run a pile through Applicant Tracking System (ATS) Software. Increase the chances the recruiter will look through your letter by adding job descriptions from the job posting.

Don’t try to be cute. You’ll make your best impression at an interview. So far your job is to get there. So don’t try to make jokes. You have some flexibility with the language though. You don’t need to be formal. You can use a colloquial, simple language.

Because your position has a high degree of responsibility, your document has to have competent formatting and quality content. Therefore, it’s crucial to review valuable tips for healthcare providers and evaluate their application in the example cover letter for a nursing job .

Do not think that your education and degree are the decisive factors in your employment. Your role includes constant interaction with different patients. Therefore, if you have a diploma but are deprived of empathy and interpersonal skills, you will not be able to cover the needs of the position.

Tips to write a memorable LPN cover letter

What’s the best thing about writing a Lpn cover letter? You get to decide which parts of your experience need to be highlighted and which should better be skipped!

And what’s the thing that will make every hiring manager want to learn more about you? Mentioning the tools that have helped you overcome challenges and improve your skillset.

Let's look at our professional tips and examples that will help you write a memorable cover letter and land an interview.

lpn coverletter.png

The secret to making your Lpn cover letter remarkable is to share your excitement about the company, the field, and the position.

It’s also a good idea to aim not to re-write your resume, but rather to build upon it and expand on your competencies.

Now, let's look at some other things that will make recruiters remember you.

How to choose the most suitable salutation and make a good impression

It’s always better to address your cover letter to a specific person. This shows that you’ve taken the time to research who the hiring manager might be and that you’re attentive to detail.

However, in case you don’t know the recruiter’s name, you can go for traditional gender-neutral salutations.

Here are some of our suggestions:

  • Dear Mr. James,
  • Dear Human Resources Manager,
  • To the [team you're applying for] Department,
  • Dear [company name] Recruiter

We’ve all heard it – introductions are a big deal.

A good cover letter introduction can help you land an interview, while a bad introduction can ruin all your chances of getting your dream job as Lpn.

So what are the things that can make your cover letter stand out? Honesty, excitement, and motivation.

Show your motivation and excitement to join the company in an honest way. And if you think that’d suit the company – share your vision with the recruiter. Tell them how you think being part of the team can help both parties grow.

Link your hard and soft skills to your achievements

Listing hard skills on your resume is quite straightforward, isn’t it? But when it comes to writing a memorable Lpn cover letter, you need to be a bit more creative.

The thing is, cover letters are designed to tell a story. To show the thought process behind your achievements and motivations. To put the recruiter in your shoes and allow them to get to know you better.

Maybe you want to share how you deal with challenges? Or what helps you reach your goals? It doesn’t really matter.

And while soft skills are important, hard skills shouldn’t be skipped either. Mentioning some hard skills (especially the ones listed by the recruiter) is always a great idea. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen documents for certain keywords.

Show that you did your research before applying

Proving that you’re familiar with the company is a great way to win the recruiter’s heart. It shows that you’ve taken some time for research and that you’re attentive to detail.

What’s more, it will also help you find out the issues at hand. This way, you can link your own skills and qualifications to some potential challenges the company might have to deal with in the future.

Choose the right ending

The last paragraph of your cover letter should briefly sum up the whole text. This is the time to express your motivation to get to the next step of the hiring process, but also your gratitude for the reader’s time and consideration.

You can be creative or use traditional closing lines here – it all depends on your preference and the company culture.

Telemetry Nurse Cover Letter Writing Tips and Sample

Professional woman smiling while outdoors

Need to write a telemetry nurse cover letter? Our tips and sample can help you earn your next cardiac nursing role. While cover letters aren’t a strict requirement for every application, writing one can set you apart from other candidates to help you land an interview. Your telemetry nurse resume lists your experience, certifications, and achievements, but a cover letter conveys more of your personality.

You might already have a cover letter from previous job applications, and you probably don’t need to throw it out completely. A few updates and formatting adjustments can elevate your letter to give you the best chance of getting the job:

  • Personalize: You can use the same cover letter for several applications, but it’s worth taking a few minutes to make the introduction specific to the role. Address the hiring manager by name if possible, mention what drew you to this specific position and facility, and incorporate some of the language from the job listing.
  • Motivation: What drew you to nursing, and more specifically, to telemetry? Do you have a passion for a certain patient population? Sharing why you became a nurse can help a hiring manager understand why you’d make a motivated team member.
  • Format: Resumes are typically arranged in lists and sections, but cover letters are generally in paragraph form. Keep your paragraphs readable at a few lines each, and know that you likely won’t need more than one page of writing.
  • Proofreading: Not sure if your cover letter is ready for the eyes of a hiring manager? You might try running it through an AI program, or having a coworker or family member read it for their opinion.

Ryan Rhythm, RN, BSN, ACLS, CV-BC 9876 Cardiac Cirle Phone: 333-333-3333 Email: [email protected]

[Hiring manager’s name] Unit 9B Cardiac Telemetry [Hospital Address] Hartford, Connecticut 00000

Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

I’d like to express my interest in joining your team at 9B. With 14 years of both acute and outpatient cardiac experience, I bring a robust telemetry skill set that I believe would be an asset to your unit.

In my early years as a med-surg RN, I cultivated a solid foundation in inpatient care, gaining exposure to a diverse range of patient cases. I then transferred to an outpatient cardiac clinic, where I assisted patients in understanding and maintaining their care plans. After growing a passion for acute cardiac care, I transitioned to my current tele unit, where I’ve served the team as charge nurse and falls team leader.

During my nursing journey, I’ve grown my confidence in handling various diagnoses and situations. Even after practicing in this specialty for 12 years, I’m still fascinated by cardiac medicine, and I know I have more to learn from your team. Building strong working relationships with physicians, APPs, and peers in the cardiac division has been one of the highlights of my career.

I still remember when I realized I wanted to be a cardiac nurse. I was fresh off of unit orientation, caring for an unusually young patient with heart failure. Early into the evening, he went into asystole with his family in the room with him. It was the first code I was ever a part of, and my first time giving CPR on a real patient. After two rounds, we got a rhythm back, and I explained what happened to the family as we wheeled him to intensive care. It was terrifying, and I knew I didn’t do everything right, but I did know I wanted to work in cardiovascular medicine.

Since then, I’ve run many more codes and built confidence and critical thinking skills. I’m drawn to your facility because of the accolades your team has received in heart and vascular surgery, post-myocardial infarction care, and stroke care. I’d be excited to work in a Level-1 trauma facility and learn from your team while caring for patients.

Please see my resume for more about my skills and certifications. I look forward to hearing from you regarding an interview. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application.

Warm regards,

Ryan Rhythm, RN, BSN, ACLS, CV-BC
