'Frida Kahlo' immersive experience coming to ABQ

Aug. 29—Frida Kahlo's life and work has become part of popular culture.

The artist stood proudly as a woman in art as she carved out her own place in the world.

Her life is the focus of the traveling exhibit, "Frida Kahlo, An Immersive Biography."

"This show is really the celebration of her life," said Angela Di Corpo, the exhibit's marketing director. "It's not about her art work. Her life story is told throughout the experience."

Albuquerque will be the next stop for the popular exhibit beginning Sept. 29, at the Immersive Pavilion, 1820 Bellamah Ave. NW, in the Sawmill District. Tickets go on sale on at 9 a.m. Wednesday, at fridakahloabq.com .

Di Corpo said making a stop in Albuquerque was perfect in both timing and routing of the experience.

"I was out in Albuquerque during 'Beyond Van Gogh' and I noticed in Old Town, Frida was everywhere," Di Corpo said. "Albuquerque had to be the next stop for this experience."

Di Corpo said the immersive biographical exhibition of the artist features seven different transformational spaces (including an award-winning virtual reality experience) enabling one to enter the life and work of the Mexican artist who, in the 21st century, continues to be more relevant than ever.

Di Corpo said while "Beyond Van Gogh" featured the paintings of the iconic artist, "Frida Kahlo: An Immersive Biography" tells Kahlo's story.

"The VR experience takes visitors into Frida's life. You'll see everything as she did," Di Corpo said. "There is an education component, as well as an immersive component. Then there's 'La Rosita,' which is a coloring room. This is where you can color and you put it on the projector and it comes to life. There's also a costume room where you can see the fashion of that time."

The experience debuted in Montreal, where it is still showing. The traveling show moves on from Phoenix before arriving in Albuquerque.

Di Corpo said the initial run date is from Sept. 29 through Oct. 30, but is expecting the run to get extended. Tickets start at $37.99 at fridakahloabq.com . There will also be discounts for students, children and families.

Immerse Yourself in Frida Kahlo’s Dream in 9 Cities Across the World

“Frida: Immersive Dream” will delve into the artist’s life as well as her art.

Courtesy of Lighthouse Immersive

Frida Kahlo’s otherworldly, folk art–style works have captivated audiences ever since she began painting at the age of 18 after a devastating bus accident in 1925 left her bedridden for months and in chronic pain for the rest of her life. Kahlo’s extensive oeuvre (including her striking self-portraits characterized by her bold, signature unibrow) is seemingly becoming more and more popular each year and can be found on everything from postcards to socks. In fact, Kahlo’s Diego and I recently sold this November for $34.9 million—the most a Latin American artwork has ever fetched at auction.

Now, fans of Kahlo will get the chance to become completely enveloped in the magical realist’s art and life with two different immersive exhibits.

Of Kahlo’s 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits.

1. Frida: Immersive Dream

This spring, Frida: Immersive Dream , will open in seven North American museums. Created by the same team who brought the hugely popular Immersive Van Gogh to life, Frida: Immersive Dream explores the life and best known works of Kahlo in seven cities: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, and Toronto. The exhibit will feature 500,000 cubic feet of projections and 1.2 million frames of video. At the show, visitors can expect to see some of her most recognizable works like The Two Fridas (1939), Self-Portrait on the Borderline Between Mexico and the United States (1932), and The Wounded Deer (1946). In addition to her paintings, photographs of Kahlo and the people who influenced her, like her husband Diego Rivera, will also be on display.

Though it’s been finely honed and updated by modern technology, there’s nothing new about the immersive art experience—Yayoi Kusama has been dazzling the art world with her signature, “ self-obliterating ” Infinity Mirror Rooms since the ’60s. The images and video depicting Kahlo’s life in Frida: Immersive Dream were brought to life by Italian digital artist Massimiliano Siccardi, whose work will be accompanied by musical scores composed by Luca Longobardi. Image projections will be shown on architectural canvas for clean, crisp images, while high-quality sound systems will provide the music.

Delve into the life of an icon at ‘Frida Kahlo, an Immersive Biography’

Immersive exhibitions are the hot ticket these days, attracting crowds of eager folks seeking experiences that engage multiple senses and encourage interaction. The unprecedented success of the Van Gogh immersive shows proves there is a voracious appetite for these types of productions.

On the heels of Van Gogh now comes “ Frida Kahlo, an Immersive Biography .” The show, which toured in Canada and Europe is now in the U.S. I had a first look at it when it recently opened in Albuquerque, NM.

Using a combination of digital art, historical photos, film, projections and installations, accompanied by a virtual reality experience, the exhibition strives to showcase the relevant highlights of one of the most influential artists in history.

Frida Kahlo immersive

Visitors walk through seven transformational spaces, taking them on a journey through the renowned Mexican artist’s life. It’s an opportunity to go beneath the surface of this unique, multifaceted woman, who embraced her true self and lived life on her own terms. This was a woman who broke conventions and tore down stereotypes, a feminist before the feminism movement, an activist before women dared express their views on politics and a genuine woman of the world.

You’ll learn that Frida was able to overcome great adversity thanks to her perseverance, strength, rebellion and talent. Her story captivates, surprises and inspires people, many who were unaware of the challenges she overcame.

Frida carved out her own place in the world and stood proudly as a woman in art. Her paintings were influenced by a fierce love of her Mexican culture and rooted in an exploration of her own psyche. She is especially known for her bold and vibrant self-portraits, which she used to express deeply personal and emotional issues, often taboo subjects.

Frida Kahlo immersive

The exhibition gives visitors an insight into the artist as a child, then later as a young woman and much later as a celebrated artist and cultural icon. It starts with a space dedicated to her biography, with different colored walls emphasizing specific parts of her life or her identity.

Frida, who was riddled with medical ailments, suffered from polio as a young child and then at the age of eighteen, she was involved in a near fatal accident on a public bus. Left with serious spinal and pelvis damage, she was confined to bed in a body cast for months on end and endured several operations that led to her infertility. It was during this time of confinement and intense rehabilitation that she began to paint. And painting became a means of communication and expression. She powered through the pain and suffering and created astonishing works of art in the ensuing years until her death at just 47 years old.

Frida’s traumas are interpreted first in chaotic, fragmented “Wizard of Oz” tornado-hits-Kansas style fashion, then in a 3D installation that presents elements of birth, blood, pain and the accident, which are all connected through tree branches. These branches turn red, resembling blood veins.

In another room, visitors, both kids and adults, are invited to color in a portrait of Frida with markers, which is then uploaded on-site for those interested in sharing their results. It was wonderful to see the number of visitors, young and old, who enthusiastically opted to get their creative juices flowing.

The main projection/installation space bathes visitors in a tapestry of vivid colors, with a montage of photos of Frida at different stages of her life, alone and at times with her husband, the prominent muralist Diego Rivera. Images from her travels and her symbolism-laden work,  are interspersed and music accompanies the projections, along with quotes from Frida. The experience was mesmerizing and as I looked around, I could see others were equally spellbound.

Frida Kahlo immersive

Those who choose to add on the virtual reality component are in for another breathtaking treat that further enhances the immersion. This journey depicts her environment in dreamlike states, her pictorial world and the characteristic imagery/symbols of her work. Elements are shown in different planes, so it’s important to look behind or above you throughout this journey. I felt totally in the moment and caught myself reaching out a few times with my hand, which must have looked quite funny to others outside the VR area! Note: If you have a tendency towards vertigo, you might want to skip this experience.

There’s also a quirky photo booth and photo displays that you can pose within to capture yourself in a Frida-like setting.

“Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism" at the Albuquerque Museum, USA

The works in the Jacques and Natasha Gelman collection epitomize the vitality and expressiveness of modern Mexican art. They were produced in a pivotal period in Mexican history, when the nation sought to redefine itself through political, social, and cultural reforms. Some of the figures in this exhibition are household names in Mexico and a handful of these have, over time, received international recognition.

Perhaps none are more well-known then Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Rivera’s bombastic personality, revolutionary politics, and inspiring murals made him a celebrity during his lifetime.

The captivating works by these two artists assembled by Jacques and Natasha Gelman are complimented by key works from their contemporaries, such as Lola Álvarez Bravo, María Izquierdo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo. They were created in a period of rich artistic invention, when artists considered their works potential to influence society. Their presentation in this exhibition is enhanced by period photographs that give a glimpse of important Mexican cultural figures, most notably Kahlo and Rivera, and offer a sense of their distinctive personalities.

The Gelmans formed close friendships with many of the artists included in this exhibition, often acting as patrons and promoters of their careers. The works they collected offer an unrivaled opportunity to encounter the chaotic and creative Mexican art world of the first half of the twentieth century in all its complexity. Modern Mexican art would come to exert a key influence on modern art in the United States and its impact continues to be felt throughout the world today.

The exhibition is organized by MondoMostre.
