The examiner tests the candidates’ ability to express themselves effectively. Speaking of which, we have listed the evaluation parameters for your essay as follows:

Structure of Essay 🏗️

In the essay, the first thing that the examiner checks is whether the essay flows logically or not from one paragraph to another. If the candidate has not logically stated their arguments in chronological order then there are chances of marks deduction. Keep in mind that proper structuring of sentences will fetch you marks.

Knowledge 🧠

Part 1 of the essay tests your subject knowledge while Part 2 of the essay tests if you are aware of the ongoing debates in the public media as well as important events, personalities, laws etc.

All the facts incorporated in your essay need to have some weightage to earn marks.

Creativity 💡

As future managers, the candidates need to produce new ideas as part of their job. Hence, the evaluators will expect your essay to be full of innovative ideas.

Lastly, you must keep in mind that you don’t make any grammatical mistakes like spelling errors, or punctuation errors as there will be a penalty.

The exam pattern and syllabus for XAT 2024 exam have been provided in the table below:

You can find the detailed syllabus of XAT 2024 below. Candidates appearing for the exam must be thorough with the entire syllabus.

Candidates appearing for the XAT 2024 exam must be aware of the following changes in the exam pattern:

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions have been introduced.

In the redesigned XAT exam pattern, each unattempted question after the first 8 will result in a negative marking penalty of 0.10 marks.

The time of the XAT 2024 exam has been changed from 9.30 AM to 12.40 PM. The time duration for the XAT exam has been extended. Instead of three hours, the XAT 2024 exam will now run for three hours and thirty minutes.

The total number of questions has gone up from 99 to 101.

The descriptive essay test, which was discontinued in 2019, has been reintroduced. Now there will be both MCQs and descriptive questions.

The XAT 2024 exam paper will have 4 MCQ sections and 1 essay writing section.

Percentiles will not be determined by taking into account the GK section having 25 questions.

The general knowledge and essay writing portions will not carry any negative marking.

There were five options for each MCQ, but only one of them is correct.

The essay of each candidate will be assessed after they have been chosen for the interview process.

The countdown counter at the top, right-hand side of the screen displays how much time is available for you to complete the examination for the part of the question paper you are answering (Part 1/Part 2).

After the allotted 165 minutes are completed, Part 1 will be locked. You will be moved to Part 2, the section of the exam that includes the general knowledge and essay questions.

For the initial part of the XAT exam (the first three sections), the scribe will get an additional 25 minutes in 2024.

Candidates were not permitted to leave the examination center before the XAT 2024 exam is finished.

PwD applicants could submit their responses at any time between 165 and 220 minutes for Part 1 and between 15 and 20 minutes for Part 2 of the exam. A PwD candidate could therefore leave the lab after 180 minutes.

The XAT 2024 Question Paper consisted of two timed parts:

Are you feeling lost and unsure about what career path to take after completing 12th standard?

Say goodbye to confusion and hello to a bright future!

As of right now, the XAT paper format for 2024 will have five sections, 100 MCQs, and one descriptive essay. Accordingly, there will be a total of 101 questions in the updated XAT exam pattern for 2024.

Yes, there will be an essay writing test in XAT 2024. The essay writing test has a 25-minute time limit, which the applicant must adhere to. The XAT 2024 essay writing test should have a 150–200 word limit. The XAT essay writing test does not have any negative marking. The last question on the XAT exam is a question on essay writing.

XAT 2024 will have a total of five sections. In order to establish your percentile and merit position, the XAT syllabus for 2024 will use essential topics from areas such as Verbal and Logical Ability (VA & LR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation (QA & DI), General Knowledge (GK) and Essay Writing.

In the General Knowledge section of XAT 2024, a total of 25 MCQ-style questions will be asked. The questions are drawn from the most pertinent areas of business, economics, and current affairs, among others. Along with the other three categories, XAT GK questions will be a significant component of the XAT 2024 computer-based online test and the application procedure for XLRI.

Yes, XAT 2024 has a negative marking. Candidates must properly understand the XAT format and pattern in order to succeed. Every appropriate response gives one mark. After 8 failed attempts, 0.10 of your total score is deducted. Each wrong response leads to a 0.25 point negative marking.

The XAT Analysis 2024 and candidate feedback predict that the exam will be moderate to difficult. Expect straightforward answers to the queries posed to VALR and DM. However, because most of the QADI section's questions were lengthy, that part was the hardest. According to XAT Analysis 2024, the GK segment in Part 2 was also challenging.

Both the XAT and the CAT score highly in the quantitative ability and data interpretation portions. Similar to how the VARC and LR questions of the CAT are challenging, the Verbal Ability and Decision Making questions of the XAT are challenging. As a result, it is a little bit more challenging to score in certain CAT and XAT areas.

The answer to how difficult is XAT from CAT, aspirants need to be aware of certain factors. Nearly all of the XAT's sections have a moderate to a high level of difficulty. An extra, highly challenging component of the XAT tests decision-making skills. Furthermore, it includes a GK portion that is absent from other competitive tests like the CAT, NMAT, etc.

Although both CAT and XAT have the same syllabus (apart from Decision Making and GK), the variation is in the sorts of questions and degree of difficulty. Both the XAT and the CAT are harder than other MBA entry examinations in terms of their level of difficulty.

No, CAT scores are not accepted as admission criteria at XLRI. Candidates must take the XAT exam rather than the CAT in order to get admitted to XLRI. IIMs and other B Schools use CAT scores. However, both CAT and XAT scores are accepted by numerous other top b-schools in India.

How to write a perfect Essay for XAT?

The Xavier Admission Test (XAT) stands as a pivotal milestone in the journey of MBA aspirants, often securing the position as the second most sought-after entrance exam after CAT. Renowned MBA institutions and universities consider XAT scores as a decisive factor in the shortlisting process. Amidst the array of sections, the XAT essay component emerges as a distinctive challenge, compelling candidates to articulate their thoughts on a given topic. This article aims to delve into a nuanced and strategic approach for mastering the XAT essay, offering valuable insights on how to navigate the intricacies of the task.

Also Read: Study In India

Understanding the Nuances of XAT Essay Writing

Akin to written ability test (wat).

The XAT essay bears a resemblance to the Written Ability Test (WAT) conducted by IIMs, yet a critical distinction lies in its universality. Unlike WAT, where only shortlisted candidates partake, every XAT examinee is tasked with completing the essay section. While the essay's percentile doesn't contribute directly to the overall score, its significance in the final merit calculation varies across institutions, adding a layer of complexity to the evaluation process.

Structural Framework

Part 2 of the XAT exam encompasses the General Awareness (GA) and the essay section, challenging candidates to allocate a mere 25 minutes to tackle 25 GA questions and craft a thoughtful essay on a given topic.

Preparing for XAT Essay Writing

Broader nature of essay topics.

XAT essay topics, often characterized by their general or abstract nature, demand no specialized study. Instead, the key lies in maintaining a habit of regular reading from newspapers and current affairs magazines, cultivating a repository of examples and instances that can robustly substantiate arguments within the essay.

Evaluation Parameters

essay for xat

Meticulous Structural Composition

Essays are scrutinized based on their logical flow, penalizing illogical ordering of ideas and poorly connected arguments. The emphasis is on a structured and ordered representation of arguments to secure commendable marks.

Knowledge Proficiency

While the first part of the XAT assesses subject knowledge, the second part evaluates awareness of ongoing debates, critical events, notable personalities, and relevant laws. The incorporation of such facts strengthens the cogency of arguments within the essay.

Fostering Innovation

In alignment with the expectations from future managers, XAT evaluators seek essays replete with innovative ideas. Repetition of opinions without proper justification is discouraged, fostering a culture of originality and creativity.

Balanced Attitude

Evaluators deduct marks for viewpoints perceived as extremist, prejudiced, unreasonable, or unscientific. The hallmark of a successful essay is a balanced perspective reflecting the rational and informed mind of the writer.

Grammatical Precision

The significance of impeccable grammar cannot be overstated. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors incur penalties, underscoring the importance of linguistic proficiency in the XAT essay.

The Right Approach to XAT Essay Writing

Classical introduction-body-conclusion structure.

Within the constraints of a 200-word limit, employing a classical Introduction-Body-Conclusion structure becomes paramount. The introduction offers a broad view, providing the examiner with a glimpse into the candidate's understanding of the topic. The body dissects the topic from multiple perspectives, and the conclusion encapsulates the candidate's opinion and forward-looking suggestions.

Content-Rich Essays

A commitment to regular reading, encompassing newspapers, current affairs magazines, and diverse literature, enriches essays with indispensable facts, examples, and information, elevating the quality of arguments.

Final Tips for XAT Essay Success

Cultivating a reading habit.

Developing a habit of reading newspapers and articles by reputable writers facilitates the formation of independent opinions on national and international issues, a trait highly valued in future managers.

Embracing a Balanced Perspective

Recognizing that examiners are assessing future managers, candidates are advised to maintain a balanced viewpoint that considers diverse angles on an issue. This reflects an ability to engage with a spectrum of perspectives, vital in managerial roles.

Grammar Proficiency as a Cornerstone

Revisiting standard English grammar books and consulting resources like "Word Power Made Easy" by Norman Lewis aids in reinforcing basic grammar rules. The emphasis lies not in the complexity of language but in lucid and precise expression.

Prowess through Practice

The crucible of success in the XAT essay section lies in consistent practice. Exploring topics from diverse realms, adhering to word limits, and seeking regular evaluation from experienced teachers form the bedrock of skill enhancement.

By immersing oneself in these strategies and heeding the outlined tips, candidates can not only navigate the complexities of the XAT essay section but also elevate their performance to stand out in the competitive landscape of MBA admissions.

Why is the XAT essay considered challenging for candidates?

The XAT essay is challenging due to its mandatory nature and varying significance in final merit calculation. Understanding its nuances is crucial for successful navigation.

How should candidates structure their XAT essays for maximum scores?

Adopt a classical Introduction-Body-Conclusion structure within the 200-word limit. Convey ideas logically to secure commendable marks.

What role does knowledge play in XAT essay evaluation, and how can candidates showcase relevant information?

Knowledge proficiency is crucial. Incorporate facts related to ongoing debates, events, personalities, and laws to bolster the cogency of arguments. Stay informed through regular reading.

Why is a balanced perspective vital in XAT essays, and how can candidates avoid deductions for extremist views?

Maintaining a balanced viewpoint is essential to reflect a rational mind. Avoid deductions by approaching opinions with fairness and reason.

How can candidates enhance creativity and innovation in XAT essays?

Elicit creativity by infusing innovative ideas into essays. Avoid repetition of opinions without justification to foster originality in content.

How To Prepare For XAT 2024? [Section-wise Strategy]

How To Prepare For XAT 2024

The XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is a well-known entrance exam arranged by XLRI, Jamshedpur. If you have already prepared for the CAT, you can apply your preparation effectively to do well and get a high score in the XAT exam. In this article, we will discuss a helpful plan to get ready for each section of the XAT 2024 exam and improve your chances of succeeding. Before diving into the preparation strategy, it’s crucial to comprehend the XAT 2024 exam pattern and syllabus. So, let’s begin by understanding the examination pattern.

Take XAT Mock Tests

Apply for XAT 2024

  • 1.0.1.1 Does XAT Have Negative Marking?
  • 1.0.2 XAT Exam Pattern (Paper-2)
  • 2.0.1 Divide Your Preparation Plan Into Two Phases
  • 2.1 How To Prepare For XAT Verbal And Logical Ability?
  • 2.2 How To Prepare For XAT Quantitative Aptitude?
  • 2.3 How to Prepare for XAT Decision Making?
  • 2.4 How to Prepare for XAT General Knowledge Section?

XAT 2024 Exam Pattern (Based On Last Year)

The XAT exam 2024 pattern consists of two papers, which are shown below.

XAT Exam Pattern (Paper-1)

Does xat have negative marking.

In the XAT paper-1, there will be a deduction of ¼ marks for each incorrect answer. However, candidates will Additionally -0.10 marks are deducted for 8 consecutive or more unattempted answers.

XAT Exam Pattern (Paper-2)

Candidates will have a total of 25 minutes to complete the examination. Furthermore, it is worth noting that there will be no negative marking for Paper 2.

XAT 2024 Preparation Strategy (Section-wise)

The XAT exam is distinct from the CAT exam. While the subjects covered are mostly similar, the exams themselves have completely different characteristics. However, candidates can make small adjustments to their preparation to succeed in the XAT exam. Now, let’s take a look at a basic preparation plan for the XAT exam:

Divide Your Preparation Plan Into Two Phases

  • In the first phase , focus on grasping the basics of all three sections. Dedicate sufficient time to learn and fully comprehend the fundamental concepts. It is crucial to have a strong foundation because, without it, you won’t be able to enhance your mock scores in the later stages of your preparation.
  • During the second phase, it is crucial to prioritize taking more XAT mock tests . Keep in mind that XAT is not a test of speed (you will have slightly more than 2 minutes per question). Additionally, there is no sectional time limit for the XAT exam. Therefore, candidates need to adjust their preparation approach to score well. Those who have practised a significant number of standard questions are likely to perform better in the exam. Hence, it is important to take more XAT Mocks to become accustomed to the test format. After each mock test, analyze the time spent on each section and question. Candidates should focus on enhancing their accuracy to improve their performance.

Let us see the section-wise preparation strategy for the XAT exam.

How To Prepare For XAT Verbal And Logical Ability?

The verbal section in XAT is slightly different from the CAT VARC section. The reading comprehension is relatively smaller; however, the questions are of similar difficulty levels. The verbal ability questions are usually from a wide range of topics. Aspirants must refresh their basic grammar since questions from these topics are also tested.

This section of the exam had a few summary questions as well. XAT is also known for poem-based short passages. Therefore, aspirants must practice all the RCs from past year papers  to get hold of the section.

How To Prepare For XAT Quantitative Aptitude?

The XAT Quantitative Ability (QA) section has a slight difference compared to the CAT quant section. The questions in XAT QA tend to be a bit longer and require a strong grasp of concepts above all else. As a result, candidates should prioritize strengthening their foundational knowledge. Solving questions from previous year’s papers is an excellent method to become familiar with the types and levels of difficulty of questions in this section. Topics such as Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra, Number Systems, and Probability & Combinations are among the many concepts tested. Therefore, it is important for aspirants to dedicate extra effort when revising these topics.

While not as challenging as those found in CAT, the Data Interpretation (DI) questions in XAT can be a bit tricky to solve. These questions often involve a large amount of data and have been known to test basic statistical concepts in previous years. Therefore, it is advisable for candidates to review fundamental statistical concepts, such as variance, standard deviation, and so on, before the exam. This will help them better handle the DI questions and increase their chances of solving them correctly.

How to Prepare for XAT Decision Making?

This section is exclusive to XAT and is often considered the deciding factor of the exam. It presents a distinctive scenario involving business problems, ethical dilemmas, hiring decisions, and more, where candidates need to make a choice. While many candidates acknowledge the importance of this section, only a few are able to adequately prepare for it. However, with proper preparation, this section is not difficult to overcome.

Past XAT papers are one of the top resources for preparing for the Decision Making (DM) section. This section requires extensive practice, so aspirants should aim to solve the DM sets from all the previous XAT papers . Instead of solely focusing on getting the answers correct, the emphasis should be on understanding what makes an option the right choice. Aspirants need to analyze why a particular option is more suitable compared to the others (making relative comparisons). Therefore, the main focus should be on developing the required thinking process.

It’s important to keep in mind that XAT imposes a penalty for skipping questions beyond a certain limit. However, the penalty is not severe, so there’s no need to worry excessively about it. Aspirants should focus on carefully attempting the questions without fear of the penalty.

How to Prepare for XAT General Knowledge Section?

Even though XLRI does not officially consider General Knowledge (GK) scores when issuing calls, they do hold some undisclosed importance in the final selection process. Therefore, aspirants should still prepare for this section to increase their chances of success.

In the GK section, there is no penalty for incorrect answers, similar to the GK section of IIFT. To prepare for this section, aspirants should focus on refreshing their knowledge of current affairs. They can refer to GK compendiums to cover the static GK part of the exam.

Essay 1: can democracy and development go together smoothly.

Economic backwardness, illiteracy, population growth, environmental degradation, corruption, regionalism and lot other factor are influencing Indian democracy with adverse consequences. Among them most of the factors is the legacy of British rule. The Indian system is, at present, going through a phase of transition from the state of underdevelopment to development. Even after five decade of independence, India continues to exhibit the basic characteristics of underdeveloped economy and social life. Among he factors posing a serious threat to democracy economic backwardness is of much importance. It express itself in the from of poverty. Although poverty is rarely about the only one thing, the bottom line is always hunger – the lack of food, but it entails psychological suffering as well as povyerlessness, voicelessness, dependence, shame and humiliation. According to the planning commission’s estimate for 1993-94, the number of poor in the country was estimated at 18.1 per cent of the total population. In March 1997, however, after accepting the Lakdawala committee’s report, the planning commission revised its estimates of the number of poor to 35.97 per cent and 320 million in 1993-94, with a monthly income as low as Rs. 264. Mass poverty, which afflicts nearly one-third of the population, is a serious problem that negates the essence of social justice and equality in the Indian democratic set-up. But poverty does lead to destabilization of other kinds. There may be mass migration from one part of the country to the other in search of jobs and other facilities. This leads an imbalance in regional growth, unplanned urbanization, and pressure on civic amenities etc. In order to fulfill their basic needs and sometimes as a result of frustration or insecurity, the poor may take to anti social activities, leading to a law and order problem. Poverty is also directly related to gender bias and over population, a serious threat to Indian democracy. We have the examples of the democratic countries, which fall under the developed economy such as USA, UK, Japan, and France etc. Basically, a democratic country gives equal opportunity to all for economic development. Thus, we cannot say that democracy and development cannot go together smoothly.

Essay 2:

The UN needs to be restructured to present the geopolitical realities of the 21st century. India being the largest democracy, home to one sixth of mankind, fourth largest economy, one of the largest peace-keeping contributor to the UN and given its credentials world peace and interests of the developing countries, rightly deserves a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. As a result, India has been campaigning for last few years at different world forums and bilateral meeting with the different countries to bring the issue to centre stage in which she has largely succeeded. The world at large has accepted to expand UN Security council. India, along with Japan, Germany and Brazil has formed a group of Four Nation to push ahead this agenda. In May 2005, G-4 has put forward a draft resolution calling for an expansion of UNSC. The African Union has also introduced as separate resolution in this regard and talks are still going on between G-4 and AU to present a combine front, through much has not come out of it as yet. Apart from this, India has received a lot of support from a majority of countries, mostly developing, who have pledged individual support to India’s candidature. However, few countries like Pakistan, Argentina, South Korea, and Italy have also formed a coffee club to oppose G- 4 resolution. Talks are going on with these countries too on an individual level.

Essay 3:

Global Warming is a catch phrase for the increase in the globe’s mean temperature due to build up of atmospheric greenhouse gases and the negative effects of rising temperature like melting glaciers, high levels of oceans or changing precipitation patterns.

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution atmospheric concentration of C02 have increased by 30%, Methane concentration by 100% and Nitrous Oxide concentration by about 15%. These increases have enhanced the heat-trapping capability of the Earth’s atmosphere. Humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions have already disturbed the global energy balance by about 1 % of the net incoming solar energy. The combustion of coal, oil and natural gas accounts for most of the heat-trapping greenhouse gases emitted by human activities.

Consequences

One of the ill effects of global warming is thought to be the rise in the sea level due to melting of glaciers and ice-caps at poles. It is estimated that global sea-level is rising at the rate of 1-3 mm/year. This will result in the submergence of low-lying geographical regions. Global warming activates the hydrological cycle along with the warming of the environment. It brings forth unpredictable climate change causing drought at certain places and cyclones and heavy shower at some places. The global warming is likely to reduce the availability of agricultural land as river deltas may be inundated due to rise in sea level. Agricultural pests may prosper to cause widespread damage to crop at increased temperature.

Global Initiatives

Several global initiatives have been taken to tackle the problem of global warming. The latest among them is the Kyoto Protocol. As per the Kyoto Protocol, the countries are to ensure that green-house gases do not exceed their assigned amounts so that their overall emissions of such gases are limited to at least 5% below 1990 levels in the commitment period 2008-2012.

Essay 4:

The Indian economy since 1991 has been undergoing constant and drastic economic reforms. These reforms have resulted in a shift from the inward-oriented policy of the past to an outward-looking one. The trend towards a liberal economic policy had funded its full expression in the early 1990s with the Government of India announcing a series of packages of stabilisation and structural policy reforms. The current economic policy reforms seems to have been guided mainly by concerns regarding the globalisation of the Indian economy, in proving internal and external competitiveness, private sector participation and removal of inadequacies or constraints. At present, the plans focus on growth targets per capita income of GDP, and the development strategy is to be indirectly planning to promote the private sector.

Reforms undertaken to improve the Indian economy since 1991 is

  • Abolition of industrial and trade licensing.
  • Removal of state monopolies, privatization and disinvestment.
  • Liberalisation of financial and capital market.
  • Liberal regime for FDI, portfolio investment, foreign technology
  • Import institution and export of primary goods, no import bias
  • Reduction and rationalisation of taxes and duties disperson
  • Sector-neutral monetary, fiscal and tariff policies
  • Abolition of exchange control, full convertibility on current account.
  • Abolition of all administered prices essential on goods except for few strategic sectors.
  • Decentralisation sound institutional framework, degree of civil service reforms.
  • Rationalisation of structure, and concessions being phased out.
  • The removal of quantitative restrictions being phased out
  • The removal of quantitative restrictions on imports and a consistent decline in average and peak import tariffs.

These reforms probably led to the higher growth performance in the post-reform era. The overall growth in the post-reform era was accelerated by a relatively higher growth in the service sector. To some extent, during the first phase (1992-93 to 1996-97) the spurt in industrial activities and output could also be noticed. The growth rate of 6.1 per cent in real output during the post-reform period (i.e. 1992-93 to 2002-03) was slightly higher than the pre-reform decade of the eighties. This was achieved through competitiveness and efficiency gains. Recent statistics show that India’s external trade has increased significantly during the post-reform period. To be precise, the share of India’s export in world mercantile trade has increased from 0.52 per cent in 1990, to 0.8 per cent in 2002. During the reform period India’s exports have increased from US $18.1 billion in 1991-91 to US $52.8 billion in 2002-03, while India’s imports have increased from US $24.1 billion in 1990-91 to US $61.6 billion in 2002-03. The higher growth in India’s exports over imports has led to a decline of India’s trade deficit.

Essay 5:

To give effect to the Paris peace settlements, the UN took the charge to conduct peaceful and fair elections in Cambodia. Before the elections, there was widespread pessimism in many countries about the elections. But to be fair enough, the United Nations Transitional Authority for Cambodia (UNTAC) performed a commendable job in conducting the elections with 90 per cent of the registered voter turn-out.

Main objects of the UN were as follows

  • To fulfill the desires of the Paris peace settlement.
  • To establish a real democratic government.
  • To create popularly represented constituent assembly.
  • Lastly to have a lasting peace in Cambodia.

The UN was greatly successful in conducting elections in Cambodia, viewing the percentage of voter turn-out. It also largely remained violence-free. However, the UN’s extraordinary performance in Cambodia has been possible due to the unusually high interest shown by the international community to bring the saga of Cambodian suffering to an end. But the role of the Khmer Rouge has been dubious, which casts a shadow on the prospects of peace in Cambodia. It also signed the Paris peace agreement in 1991 and as a signatory it should have helped in implementing the agreement. Instead, it remained a prisoner of its own past image. Moreover, the constituent assembly would face major challenge in bringing different forces in Cambodian polity into the mainstream of democracy and peaceful public life. This challenge would be minimised, if all renegade forces form a part of national re-conciliation. Since the Cambodian economy has been in doldrums for the last 14 years, people are facing financial hardships. At this juncture there is a need to revive the shattered economy with full utilisation of natural resources and less dependence on international aid. Thus, now onwards, after the successful completion of elections, the future of Cambodia rests on the shoulders of the people of Cambodia.
