Adam Sandler's Teen Daughters Roast Him in Acceptance Speech They Wrote for His Gotham Awards Win

Adam Sandler bravely let his daughters guide his speech as he received the Film Tribute Award at the 2022 Gotham Awards.

The Hustle actor explained to the crowd that he allowed his two teen daughters — Sunny Madeline , 14, and Sadie Madison , 16 — to write his speech accepting the honor.

"I told my daughters Sadie and Sunny, who are 16 and 14, that I didn't write a speech, and they said phrases like, 'Rude' and 'You're mean,' " Sandler joked to the audience in New York City Monday night.

"They were like, 'Can we write your speech so you've got something to say?' I said, 'Absolutely! It would be nice to see you doing something other than watching YouTube or going to f--king Lululemon every f---ing weekend,' " the father of two teased.

Obliging their request to accept the award "in that goofy Southern accent that you do all your dumb speeches in," Sandler's daughters launched into what the award meant.

"It means a lot to him seeing how most of the awards on his trophy shelf are shaped like popcorn buckets, blimps or fake mini Oscars that say 'Father of the Year,' which he sadly purchased himself while wandering in a self-pitying fog through the headshops of Times Square," he read, laughing at the teens' jabs.

The girls also lamented not being able to join their parents at the event, writing, "We also wish we could be at tonight's award show with all of you sophisticated people, but Daddy said, and we quote, 'I don't want to spend a whole night that's supposed to be about me and my greatness listening to you two newly pubetized buffoons screaming, 'Where is Timothée Chalamet and how can we legally squeeze that fine little Jewish ass of his?'"

Though they were disappointed not to be at the event, they did joke about doing everything they're "not allowed to do when Daddy is home," in his absence.

"Like eat his Yodels, try on his Spanx, or – dare we say – laugh out loud at Ben Stiller movies," he read, with Stiller in attendance. "The last time Daddy caught us chuckling away at the Meet the Parents trilogy, he immediately stormed into the room he calls 'The Screaming Room,' which we just call the shower, and bellowed out the phrase, 'Only the Sandman makes people laugh!'"

The pair also joked that Sandler's film Big Daddy featuring "the little cutie who grows up to be Dylan and Cole Sprouse," could also be described as the movie "that paid for this f--king house and your grandma's house and your other f--king grandma's house, Rob Schneider's f--king house, and your braces and Rob Schneider's f--king braces!"

At the end of the speech, Sandler broke from the accent and the speech and thanked his daughters and his wife for being part of his journey.

In May, the Uncut Gems actor and his wife celebrated Sunny's bat mitzvah along with some high-profile guests. The event was attended by the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Lautner , Sandler's costars in Murder Mystery and Just Go with It and Grown Ups 2 and The Ridiculous 6 .

In a TikTok video shared by user @lilah.newkirk , various guests (including Sandler, Aniston and Lautner) were seen posing with a giant Smarties candy package.

Other shots showed performances from special musical guests Charlie Puth and Halsey , while a photo from the bash posted to Instagram by Victor Boyce — the father of the late Cameron Boyce — showed himself, wife Libby Boyce , Peyton List and more seated at a table together.

Adam Sandler Reads Acceptance Speech Written By His Kids, And They Roasted Him Hard

Adam Sandler may have won the performer tribute at the 2022 Gotham Awards in honor of his decorated career as an actor and comic — but to his two teenage daughters, he’s just a dad with a gross beard and too many Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards trophies for their liking.

Sandler walked up to the stage at the ceremony Monday and let the audience know that he was too “fucking tired” to write his speech for the occasion, so he handed the task over to his kids, Sadie, 16, and Sunny, 14.

The girls wrote the speech for Sandler and demanded he deliver it in the “goofy Southern accent you do all your dumb speeches in,” presumably in his movies, and then they proceeded to roast him to a crisp.

“Dear well-dressed dignitaries, highly educated hipsters and various other plus-ones of the Gotham Awards thank you for giving our daddy, Mr. Adam Sandler, this prestigious lifetime, all-time, primetime G.O.A.T. achievement tribute award,” Sandler began.

His kids then defined his career in a hilariously blunt way.

“Daddy’s silly film career began in 1988, formed by two guiding principles: People in prison need movies too, and TBS needs content,” the “Uncut Gems” star read.

The speech then gave the audience a very funny peek into the internal politics of the Sandler household.

“While daddy is with you tonight, we’re doing everything we’re not allowed to do when daddy is home, like eat his Yodels or try on his Spanx or, dare we say, laugh out loud at Ben Stiller movies,” Sandler read. “The last time daddy caught us chuckling away at the ‘Meet the Parents’ trilogy, he immediately stormed into the room he calls ‘The Screaming Room,’ which we just call ‘the shower,’ and bellowed out the phrase, ‘Only the Sandman makes people laugh. Fuck every other comedian.’”

Sandler started the speech by joking that his two kids called him out for not having the energy to write his own speech before offering to do it for him. Sandler agreed and noted that his kids had just one other condition: “Will you do the speech in that goofy Southern accent you do all your dumb speeches in?” Of course, he obliged.

Sandler’s speech was peppered with an array of self-deprecating jokes about his career. When he embarked on his film career in the late Eighties, he said one of his guiding principles was “TBS needs content to show between all them fucking basketball games.” Of Big Daddy , he cracked that his kids could remember the smash comedy as the film that launched the careers of Cole and Dylan Sprouse or the movie that paid for their house, their grandmothers’ houses, Rob Schneider’s house, their braces, and Rob Schneider’s braces.

The pair recalled watching Sandler on Saturday Night Live and listening to his 1993 comedy album, They’re All Gonna Laugh at You! with the volume turned down so their dad wouldn’t hear. 

Benny Safdie then ran through Sandler’s remarkable run of films from Billy Madison to Punch Drunk Love and proceeded to call Sandler the “industrial revolution of actors.” This prompted Benny to repeat, word-for-word, the classic “everyone in this room is now dumber” speech from the big academic decathlon scene in Billy Madison.

Adam Sandler, King of Awards-Show Acceptance Speeches, Is Back

There isn’t an awards show on the planet that wouldn’t benefit from an Adam Sandler acceptance speech. He should be an EGOT recipient every year, even after he retires, just to bring some flair to these typically stuffy proceedings. As his speech at the 2020 Indie Spirit Awards — he won Best Male Lead for Uncut Gems — and his speech at 2022’s Gotham Awards demonstrate, if you give Sandler an award, he will bring down the goddamned house.

The recipient of a Performer Tribute Award on November 29, Sandler took the podium at the 32nd Annual Gotham Awards in New York City after a touching introduction by Uncut Gems duo t he Safdie bros and proceeded to tell the audience he had declined to write a speech. Instead, his daughters, Sadie and Sunny, wrote one for him. “Daddy’s fucking tired,” he says he told his daughters when they called his lack of preparation “rude” and “mean.”

And so Sandler went on to deliver an acceptance speech supposedly written by the 16- and 15 year-olds, seizing an opportunity to make fun of himself relentlessly. “While Daddy is with you tonight, we’re doing everything we’re not allowed to do when Daddy is home,” he read. “Like eat his Yodels or try on his Spanx or, dare we say, laugh out loud at Ben Stiller movies. The last time Daddy caught us chuckling away at the Meet the Parents trilogy, he immediately stormed into the room he calls ‘The Screaming Room’ — which we just call ‘the shower’ — and bellowed out the phrase, ‘Only the Sandman makes people laugh. Fuck every other comedian.’”

Other highlights of the speech included Sandler’s quips about his film career (“Daddy’s silly film career began in 1988, formed by two guiding principles: People in prison need movies too, and TBS needs content”), Sandler clarifying to his daughters that Big Daddy was not just the movie that launched Dylan Sprouse’s and Cole Sprouse’s careers, but rather “the movie that paid for this fucking house, and your grandma’s house, and your other fucking grandma’s house, and Rob Schneider’s fucking house,” and Sandler refusing to let his daughters attend the ceremony because he didn’t want to share the spotlight with Timothée Chalamet (“I don’t want to spend a whole night that’s supposed to be about me and my greatness listening to you two newly pubitized buffoons screaming where is Timothée Chalamet and how can we legally squeeze that fine little Jewish ass of his?”).

Sandler even found a way to squeeze in a thank-you to his wife, ending the speech on a touching note. “Thank you, Mommy, for putting up with Daddy and his crazy fucking mood swings all these years,” he read. “Now that truly is a feat deserving of a lifetime-achievement award.” Give Sandler all the awards! Let him make a speech at the BAFTAs, the ESPYs, the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony for Physics. He won’t disappoint.

Adam Sandler Gives Outrageous Speech Allegedly Written By Daughters at Gotham Awards

"Only the Sandman makes people laugh. F--- every other comedian."

Adam Sandler delivered one of the most hilarious and creative acceptance speeches of all time at the 2022 Gotham Awards on Monday night.

During the ceremony, which took place at New York's Cipriani Wall Street, the 56-year-old actor hit the stage to accept the Performer Tribute Award. Sandler -- who was presented with the honor by "Uncut Gems" co-directors, Josh and Benny Safdie -- gave an epic speech, which he said was written by his daughters Sadie and Sunny.

"I told my daughters Sadie and Sunny, who are 16 and 14, that I didn't write a speech and they said phrases like, 'Rude' and 'You're mean,'" the "Hustle" star began. "I said, 'Daddy's f---ing tired. Daddy f---ing works hard, calm down.' They were like, 'Can we write your speech, Daddy? So you got something to say.' I said, 'Absolutely.'"

Sandler -- who shares his teenagers with wife Jackie -- noted that his daughters requested that he deliver the speech in the "goofy Southern accent you always do all of your dumb speeches in?"

"My daughters wrote this. Let's see how we do," he prefaced, before starting the speech in a hilarious accent. "Dear well-dressed dignitaries, highly educated hipsters and various other plus-ones of the Gotham Awards, thank you for giving our daddy, Mr. Adam Sandler, this prestigious lifetime, all-time, primetime G.O.A.T. achievement tribute award."

He continued, "It means a lot to him seeing that most of the awards on his trophy shelf are shaped like popcorn buckets, blimps, or fake mini-Oscars that say 'Father of the Year,' which he sadly purchased himself while wandering in a self-pitying fog through the head shops of Times Square."

The comedian went on to throw some jabs at his appearance and career, before he explained why his daughters weren't in attendance.

"But Daddy said and we quote, 'I don't want to spend a whole night that's supposed to be about me and my greatness listening to you two newly-pubitized buffoons screaming, 'Where is Timothée Chalamet? And how we can legally squeeze that fine little Jewish ass of his?' But Gotham Awards don't feel bad for us Sandler girls," the comedy legend said before he shared what he claims his daughters said they were doing at home.

"While daddy is with you tonight, we're doing everything we're not allowed to do when daddy is home, like eat his Yodels or try on his Spanx or, dare we say, laugh out loud at Ben Stiller movies," he quipped, pausing to laugh. "The last time daddy caught us chuckling away at the 'Meet the Parents' trilogy, he immediately stormed into the room he calls 'The Screaming Room,' which we just call 'the shower,' and bellowed out the phrase, 'Only the Sandman makes people laugh. F--- every other comedian.'"

Sandler -- or his "daughters" -- went on to poke fun at his over three-decades-long career.

"Daddy's silly film career began in 1988, formed by two guiding principles: people in prison need movies too and TBS needs content," Sandler said, before mentioning some of his famous films, including, "Happy Gilmore," "Billy Madison," "Big Daddy," "Punch-Drunk Love" and "Uncut Gems." (While mentioning the latter, Sandler pointed and gave a thumbs up to someone backstage, with the gesture seemingly being directed at The Safdie Brothers.)

"Films that were not only received with orgasmic critical acclaim," he said of the movies, "but also left audiences baffled as they pondered the mystery: How did Bobby Boucher get all up in my feelings and make me laugh, cry and sprint directly to church to ask God why he had blessed a man with more talent than the entire cast of 'The Poseidon Adventure' and 'Mamma Mia' combined?"

Sandler concluded his speech with a message allegedly from his daughters, who said, "We'll leave you with this: Thank you, Mommy, for putting up with Daddy and his crazy f---ing mood swings all these years. Now that truly is a feat deserving of a lifetime achievement award."

Understandably, Sandler's hilarious speech went viral, and even caught the eye of Ben Stiller , who praised the speech and seemingly loved the shoutout.

"So @AdamSandler just gave the funniest acceptance speech ever at the #GothamAwards2022," Stiller tweeted .

Timothée Chalamet , unfortunately, has yet to react. (Fingers crossed.)

The speech takes aim at Ben Stiller and Timothée Chalamet

Adam Sandler stole the show at the Gotham Awards with an acceptance speech supposedly written by his daughters – check it out below.

The actor accepted a Performer Tribute award at the ceremony on Monday (November 28), where he explained how he told his daughters Sadie and Sunny, who are 16 and 14, that he “didn’t write a speech” and in response “they said phrases like ‘Rude’ and ‘You’re mean’”.

He added: “I said, ‘Daddy’s fucking tired, you know? Daddy fucking words hard, calm down’. And they were like, ‘Can we write your speech, daddy? So you’ve got something to say?’ I said absolutely.”

In a caveat from his daughters, Sandler delivered the speech in “that goofy Southern accent that you always do your dumb speeches in”.

Adopting a southern accent, Sandler began: “Dear well-dressed dignitaries, highly educated hipsters and various other plus-ones of the Gotham Awards, thank you for giving our daddy, Mr Adam Sandler, this prestigious lifetime, all-time, primetime GOAT (greatest of all time) achievement tribute award.

“It means a lot to him seeing that most of the awards on his trophy shelf are shaped like popcorn buckets, blimps, or fake mini-Oscars that say ‘Father Of The Year’, which he sadly purchased himself while wandering in a self-pitying fog through the head shops of Times Square.”

Sandler then explained why his daughters were not in attendance at the awards. “I don’t want to spend the whole night that’s supposed to be about me and my greatness listening to you two newly pubertized buffoons screaming, ‘Where is Timothée Chalamet?’”

Later in the speech, Sandler, supposedly through his daughters’ words, explained what they’d be able to get up to while he was away, including eat his Yodels, try on his Spanx or “dare we say, laugh out loud at Ben Stiller movies”.

He added: “The last time daddy caught us chuckling away at the Meet The Parents trilogy, he immediately stormed into the room he calls ‘The Screaming Room,’ which we just call ‘the shower,’ and bellowed out the phrase, ‘Only the Sandman makes people laugh. Fuck every other comedian.’”

As he concluded the six-minute speech, Sandler said: “Well, it’s almost time for us to go watch some more YouTube clips and buy some more Lululemon shit, so we’ll leave you with this: Thank you mommy for putting up with daddy and his crazy fucking moodswings all these years.

“Now that truly is a feat deserving of a lifetime achievement award.”

Sandler is promoting Netflix basketball drama Hustle on the awards circuit, which was released earlier this year. He’s set to reunite with Uncut Gems directors Josh and Benny Safdie on their next film , which will be set “in the world of high-end card collecting”.

Adam Sandler roasts Timothée Chalamet, Ben Stiller in speech his daughters 'wrote'

The Hustle star was accepting a Performers Tribute at the Gotham Awards in New York on Nov. 28.

When Adam Sandler accepted a Performer Tribute honor at the Gotham Awards last night in New York City, he claimed his teenage daughters Sadie and Sunny wrote his speech — with the caveat that he read it in "that goofy Southern accent that you always do your dumb speeches in."

Sandler, being the sporting dad he is, agreed, and slipped effortlessly into character to reflect on his career, stick it to longtime friend Rob Schneider , and thank his wife for putting up with his mood swings. Watch the full video of his speech above.

"Dear well-dressed dignitaries, highly-educated hipsters, and various other plus-ones of The Gotham Awards, thank you for giving our daddy, Mr. Adam Sandler, this prestigious lifetime, all-time, primetime, G.O.A.T. achievement Tribute Award," Sandler, 56, began.

"It means a lot to him seeing that most of the awards on his trophy shelf are shaped like popcorn buckets, blimps, or fake mini-Oscars that say 'Father of the Year', which he sadly purchased himself while wandering in a self-pitying fog through the head shops of Times Square."

Sandler then explained why his daughters did not attend the awards: "I don't want to spend the whole night that's supposed to be about me and my greatness listening to you two newly pubertized buffoons screaming, 'Where is Timothée Chalamet ?'"

In the speech, Sandler, or rather his daughters (allegedly) wrote that they would instead be free to do all the things they can't do when he's home, such as eat his Yodels, try out his Spanx, or "dare we say, laugh out loud at Ben Stiller movies."

"The last time daddy caught us chuckling away at the Meet the Parents trilogy," Sandler said, "he immediately stormed into the room he calls The Screaming Room, which we just call the shower, and bellowed out the phrase, 'Only The Sandman makes people laugh. F--- every other comedian.'"

He went on to state that his film career was formed by two guiding principles ("People in prison need movies too, and TBS needs content to show between all them f---ing basketball games"), before rattling off a few of his hit comedies, including Billy Madison , Happy Gilmore , The Wedding Singer, and The Waterboy.

His daughters apparently refer to 1999's Big Daddy as the movie with the "little cutie who grows up to be Cole and Dylan Sprouse," though Sandler prefers to describe it as "the movie that paid for this f---ing house and your grandma's house and your other f---ing grandma's house, Rob Schneider's f---ing house, and your braces, and Rob Schneider's f---ng braces."

After touting some of his critically-acclaimed indie films, which are more The Gotham Award's speed, such as Punch-Drunk Love , The Meyerowitz Stories , Uncut Gems , and his recent Netflix basketball dramedy Hustle — which he is campaigning for this awards season —Sandler/his daughters thanked his wife for putting up with his "crazy f---ing mood swings all these years."

"Now that truly," he concluded, "is a feat deserving of a lifetime achievement award."

The actor and comedian is a father of two children.

For three decades, Adam Sandler has made a name for himself in the entertainment world, but aside from acting, performing and singing, the "Big Daddy" star is also a devoted family man.

The funnyman and his wife Jackie Sandler are parents of two daughters. The entire Sandler family recently stepped out at the Los Angeles premiere of Adam Sandler's new film "Spaceman," which sees the 57-year-old play an astronaut who is on a mission to save his marriage.

Adam and Jackie Sandler met back in 1998 and have been married since 2003.

When Adam Sandler received the People's Choice Icon Award earlier in February, he called his wife "my girl" and "my partner for life."

"I love every car ride and every kiss we've ever had forever and ever," Sandler said in part.

The Sandler family have been involved in several of Adam Sandler's recent projects, including the 2023 animated film "Leo" and the 2023 comedy film "You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah."

Sadie Sandler is the eldest Sandler daughter, and is now 17.

Both Sadie and her sister Sunny have followed their father's footsteps into acting.

"They are kind of passionate about wanting to be good in acting and that's all they talk about," Adam Sandler told Jimmy Kimmel in a November 2023 interview .

Adam Sandler was joined by his wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny this week at the premiere of his new film, "Leo."

The famous family stepped out for the event, held in Los Angeles on Nov. 19, to celebrate the forthcoming animated musical comedy, which Sandler produced, co-wrote and starred in.

"Leo" follows Sandler's titular character, an old turtle who has long resided in a terrarium located inside a Florida elementary school classroom.

A sequel to classic 1996 Adam Sandler comedy Happy Gilmore may be in the making, as a first draft of the script has been written, according to actor Christopher McDonald , a cast member of the original film.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” the actor shared in an interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2 .”

Sources say the project will be for Netflix, where Sandler and Happy Madison have long had a deal , though the streamer is declining comment. Reps for Sandler also had no comment.

One of Sandler’s most popular films — and one of two, along with Billy Madison , that gives its name to his production company, Happy Madison — Happy Gilmore follows Sandler’s titular failed hockey player with a powerful slapshot and a volatile temper. When Happy’s grandmother, who raised him, is threatened with eviction from her home due to unpaid taxes, Happy discovers that he has a natural talent for golf, specifically driving the ball incredible distances.

With the help of retired golf pro Chubbs Peterson, played by the late Carl Weathers , he decides to join the PGA Tour to win enough money to save his grandmother’s house. However, Happy’s unorthodox and aggressive playing style clashes with the traditional etiquette of golf, making him unpopular with PGA officials and other players like McDonald’s Shooter McGavin, a smug and arrogant golfer who sees Happy as a threat to his own career aspirations.

9. Blended (2014)

7. Mr. Deeds (2002) 

Not quite your traditional romantic comedy, Mr. Deeds still fits the bill with its romance being a central story amidst the absurdity. Adam Sandler’s Longfellow Deeds goes from a beloved owner of a pizzeria to an instant multi-billionaire after the death of a distant uncle. As he sets about using his new fortune to help improve the lives of others, he falls for Babe Bennet ( Winona Ryder ), an opportunistic reporter posing as school nurse Pam Dawson. While not loved by critics, Sandler still sells this early-aughts flick, which includes the obligatory grand gesture to seal its romance.

6. Spanglish (2004) 

There were several signs earlier in Adam Sandler’s career that he was capable of more than manchild, sophomoric humor, and Spanglish was one of those. The story centers around Flor (Paz Vega), a single mother who moves from Mexico to Los Angeles in search of a better life. Despite a language barrier, she begins housekeeping for the Claskys, ultimately forming a bond with John (Sandler). Despite bombing at the box office, Spanglish received praise for Sandler and Vega’s performances.

5. Big Daddy (1999) 

While certainly capable of more dramatic roles, Adam Sandler may have shined the brightest in his decidedly unserious roles of the ‘90s, as proven by Big Daddy , which was 1999’s seventh highest-grossing movie domestically (and 12th worldwide, per Box Office Mojo ). The Sandman plays Sonny, a thirtysomething slacker who decides that caring for his out-of-town roommate’s 5-year-old son Julian (Cole and Dylan Sprouse) is the best way to win back his ex-girlfriend. The joke’s on Sonny, as he actually does grow up, bonding with Julian, and becoming emotionally mature enough to engage in a new and healthy relationship with Layla (Joey Lauren Adams).

4. Billy Madison (1995) 

While it contains many of Adam Sandler’s funniest movie quotes , Billy Madison is not considered a rom-com by everyone’s standards. However, the relationship plot here is more in the forefront than some of his other comedies and therefore deserves a place on this list. Sandler stars as the titular character, who must repeat kindergarten through 12th grade in order to prove he’s smart enough to inherit his father’s chain of hotels. Billy ends up falling for third-grade teacher Veronica Vaughn (Bridgette Wilson), who rebuffs him at first but then becomes integral to keeping him on the right track when others try to derail him.

3. 50 First Dates (2004) 

In 50 First Dates — the second joint venture of Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore — Sandler plays commitment-phobic Henry, who decides to change his womanizing ways after spending a perfect day with Barrymore’s Lucy. However, he soon learns that due to a terrible car accident, Lucy loses her memory each night when she goes to sleep, effectively living the same day over and over. Henry shows incredible tenderness, patience and determination in the lengths he goes to make their relationship work day after day, making this one of Sandler’s best. Not to mention, 50 First Dates ’ ending is one we’re still contemplating all these years later.

2. Punch-Drunk Love (2002) 

Punch-Drunk Love is possibly our earliest indication that the comedian would be great in a dramatic role , as Adam Sandler plays Barry, a troubled and socially awkward man who falls for one of his seven sisters’ co-workers, Lena (Emily Watson). In true Paul Thomas Anderson fashion, the comedy is dark in its exploration of loneliness and the unfolding of an unconventional love story, but the humor is there nonetheless with a charming and critically acclaimed performance from Sandler. Decades later, many consider Punch-Drunk Love to be one of the actor’s best movies.
