Boys to Men: Teaching and Learning About Masculinity in an Age of Change

What do boys in America think about being boys today?

What do they imagine is expected of them? Whom do they look up to, and how are they navigating the transition from being boys to becoming men?

In a 2018 Times opinion essay “ The Boys Are Not All Right ,” the comedian and author Michael Ian Black writes:

The past 50 years have redefined what it means to be female in America. Girls today are told that they can do anything, be anyone. They’ve absorbed the message: They’re outperforming boys in school at every level. But it isn’t just about performance. To be a girl today is to be the beneficiary of decades of conversation about the complexities of womanhood, its many forms and expressions. Boys, though, have been left behind. No commensurate movement has emerged to help them navigate toward a full expression of their gender. It’s no longer enough to “be a man” — we no longer even know what that means.

In this unit, we explore some of the questions Mr. Black, and others, raise, and suggest ways to deconstruct definitions of masculinity as they manifest in our society and our lives. We end with suggestions for several projects students might take on to expand and reimagine what “being a man” might mean in their own lives and in our society at large.

Note to teachers: This is a sensitive topic, and some of the readings, discussion questions or activities may not be suitable for your students. We hope you will tailor it to fit your needs, but we also hope you’ll tell us how and why you did that, in the comments.

Warm Up: ‘Good’ Men vs. ‘Real’ Men

In 2015, Michael Kimmel, a leading scholar on masculinity and the director of the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities , helped start the nation’s first master’s degree program in Masculinities Studies. The program, at Stony Brook University, explores what it means to be male in today’s world.

In “ A Master’s Degree in … Masculinity? ” Jessica Bennett explains how Mr. Kimmel begins his classes:

Michael Kimmel stood in front of a classroom in bluejeans and a blazer with a pen to a whiteboard. “What does it mean,” the 64-year-old sociology professor asked the group, most of them undergraduates, “to be a good man?” The students looked puzzled. “Let’s say it was said at your funeral, ‘He was a good man,’” Dr. Kimmel explained. “What does that mean to you?” “Caring,” a male student in the front said. “Putting other’s needs before yours,” another young man said. “Honest,” a third said. Dr. Kimmel listed each term under the heading Good Man, then turned back to the group. “Now,” he said, “tell me what it means to be a real man.” This time, the students reacted more quickly. “Take charge; be authoritative,” said James, a sophomore. “Take risks,” said Amanda, a sociology graduate student. “It means suppressing any kind of weakness,” another offered. “I think for me being a real man meant talk like a man,” said a young man who’d grown up in Turkey. “Walk like a man. Never cry.” Dr. Kimmel had been taking notes. “Now you’re in the wheelhouse,” he said, excitedly. He pointed to the Good Man list on the left side of the board, then to the Real Man list he’d added to the right. “Look at the disparity. I think American men are confused about what it means to be a man.”

Try a similar warm-up activity with your students to get them thinking about the messages they receive from society about what it means to be a man.

Ask students: What does it mean to be a “good man”? • What qualities do the men you respect and admire have? • What values and morals do they live by? • What kinds of things do they say and do?

Next, ask: What does it mean to be a “real man”? • What do people mean when they say “ be a man ” or “man up”? • What qualities are “real men” assumed to have? • How are they expected to speak and act? How are they not supposed to behave?

Then, allow them to take a few minutes to analyze what they see in the two columns and discuss:

• What do you notice? What do you wonder? • Are what it means to be a “good” man and a “real” man mostly similar or mostly different? Why do you think this is? What conclusions can you draw in comparing the lists? • How do you think these cultural messages affect boys and men? How might they affect girls and women?

Next, we recommend you take a moment to have students write anonymously about and then, perhaps, discuss this question:

• Why might this be a challenging issue to talk about in school?

Based on what students say, you and the class may set up discussion protocols for this unit.

Finally, you might end the class by having students read some of the student comments on our Picture Prompt “ Boys and Men ,” then add their own. (Note: All our student writing prompts are open for response indefinitely.)

Like Dr. Kimmel’s students, yours will most likely realize that the messages boys get from society about manhood are confusing. They may also begin to see the ways in which this confusion impacts not just the personal lives of boys and men, but also their relationships, their work and the rest of the world. The rest of this unit seeks to help them delve more deeply into the questions this warm-up may raise.

Definitions and Research: Masculinity and ‘Toxic Masculinity’

Gender and Masculinity

So, what does it mean to be a man? How much of that is determined by biology? How much is influenced by the society we live in? And how much control do we even have over the ways we behave?

First, share a few important definitions with your students:

• Sex refers to a person’s sexual anatomy, like chromosomes, hormones, and internal and external sex organs. The terms “male” and “female” are often used to talk about an individual’s sex. • Gender refers to the characteristics and behaviors that a society or culture associates with males and females. The terms “masculine” and “feminine” are usually used to describe gender. • Gender identity is an individual’s deeply held sense of being male, female or another gender. This is separate from biological sex. (Definition from Teaching Tolerance ; for more on teaching about gender identity, see their lesson here .) • Gender expression can be defined as the way we show our gender to the world. Societal expectations of gender expression are reinforced in almost every area of life. Even very young children are clear about the gendered choices that boys and girls are “supposed to” make in relation to toys, colors, clothes, games and activities. In this section of the lesson, we begin with the idea that sex — the anatomy with which one is born — does not predetermine gender identity — one’s sense of being male, female or another gender — or gender expression — the way one shows gender to the world.

Delving into the vast amount of research on the extent to which biology and culture influence behavior and even brain development is beyond the scope of this lesson. So, we have identified a few key ideas from the scientific, sociological and philosophical study of gender. You might begin by sharing this research with your students or, if you have time, allow them to read more about it in the linked articles:

• Research shows that there is little difference between male and female brains at birth.

• Despite this similarity, people of different genders do often think, act and speak differently. But, because we are socialized into gender roles beginning at a very young age, it is extremely difficult to determine how much our biology influences our gendered behavior and how much is our response to our environment. Most researchers agree, though, that culture has a significant impact on our gendered behaviors .

• While these biological and cultural forces are indeed real and powerful, we also — to a large extent — have a choice in how we present ourselves to the world. And, the more informed we are about the choices we have in expressing ourselves, the better we are able to completely and truly be our unique selves.

“Toxic Masculinity”:

One term that comes up often in discussion of gender and, especially, what it means to be a man, is “toxic masculinity.” But as Colleen Clemens writes in Teaching Tolerance, “‘Toxic masculinity’ is tricky. It’s a phrase that — misunderstood — can seem wildly insulting, even bigoted.”

The Good Men Project defines it this way:

Toxic masculinity is a narrow and repressive description of manhood, designating manhood as defined by violence, sex, status and aggression. It’s the cultural ideal of manliness, where strength is everything while emotions are a weakness; where sex and brutality are yardsticks by which men are measured, while supposedly “feminine” traits — which can range from emotional vulnerability to simply not being hypersexual — are the means by which your status as “man” can be taken away.

It is crucial, however, that students understand some key ideas:

• Talking about toxic masculinity is not about vilifying boys, men or any of the particular qualities society has deemed “masculine.” Rather, it is an opportunity to begin to reconstruct a more positive model of masculinity that makes room for the many different ways to be a boy or man and allows all individuals to feel secure in their masculine identity.

Michael Ian Black sums up this sentiment in a response to a reader comment on his Op-Ed, “ The Boys Are Not All Right ”:

Mr. Florentino : I cried as I read this. My son — a high school and college wrestler who achieved much success on the mat — is one of the most sensitive souls I know. But far too often, I cheered his masculinity, his fierceness, and his muscles. I should have been cheering his kindness, his empathy, and his innate ability to be gentle. Those emotional qualities are what REALLY make him strong. MIB: I am very interested in a fuller expression of male strength. Physical strength is great (I wish I had more of it, because I would like, for once in my life, to look good shirtless on a beach). But a man’s strength can be expressed in innumerable ways, including the strength to be vulnerable, the strength to ask for help, to seek forgiveness, to display empathy. By all means, root for your son, but root for his entire being. It sounds like you’re doing that.

• Toxic masculinity is not just a men’s issue — its consequences are pervasive and affect everyone, including girls and women. Also, girls, boys, women and men all make choices about their behavior that can either perpetuate a culture of toxic masculinity or disrupt it. (And, of course, “ toxic femininity ” is its corollary.)

To further explore this phrase, students might complete a Frayer model , including the definition, characteristics, examples and nonexamples of toxic masculinity. You can also see how it has been used in New York Times articles .

After defining the term, show students this three-minute trailer of the documentary “ The Mask You Live In ” by the Representation Project . As they watch, they might continue to add to their Frayer models. ( Note to teachers : This clip includes some profanity and graphic language. Please preview it to make sure it is appropriate for your students. )

Then, have students read Mr. Black’s Op-Ed, “ The Boys Are Not All Right ,” highlighting the characteristics and examples of toxic masculinity he gives. You might also assign students to read some of the 2,000-plus comments from readers that the article inspired. Do they agree with Mr. Black’s assertions? Why or why not? What arguments made by readers are also compelling?

Ask students if they can think of any other characteristics, examples or nonexamples of what it means to be a man according to this model of masculinity — such as those they came up with during the warm-up — and add them to the Frayer model.

Then, discuss:

• According to these texts, what makes this particular idea of masculinity “toxic”? • For whom is it toxic and why?

Then, allow students to do their own personal reflection in a silent writing activity. You might ask:

• Do you identify with this experience of masculinity in any way? • If so, how? How does it affect you or others? • If not, have you ever witnessed any of these behaviors at school or home, or in society? What are they, and how have they affected you or others? • How does learning about toxic masculinity make you feel and why?

Messages About Masculinity: Reading, Annotating, Discussing and Collecting

Below, we list several categories — families, school, politics, sports, fraternities, media, relationships and the workplace — and suggest a few articles and Op-Eds students might read to think about the messages about masculinity that pervade each. These, however, are just a starting point, and we hope you’ll use the comments section to round out our lists with other readings, from within and outside The Times.

Your students might go through the following sequence:

1. Read and annotate.

You might assign different articles or subtopics to different students or small groups. As they read, students should annotate individually by finding words, phrases or lines that seem germane to a discussion about messages of masculinity in different aspects of life and noting their reactions.

Next, invite students to do a jigsaw activity in which they meet in small groups to share their pieces and discuss what they discovered. As they go, they might consider questions like these:

• What passages, examples or lines from what you read stood out in light of our study of masculinity? Why?

• How do you think the expressions of masculinity you read about seem to affect the people in the piece? How do you think they affect our society as a whole? Why?

• What personal connections did you make to the piece you read?

3. Collect cultural messages about masculinity from their daily lives.

After students have read and discussed these pieces, assign them to collect messages about masculinity — positive or negative — that they come across in their daily lives, whether on television or in advertising, the news media, video games, movies, books, music or anywhere else.

Students might then mount a gallery of what they find, with their commentary, to prepare for the final phase of this unit in which they do projects that imagine a more expansive view of masculinity for the future.

In this unit so far, students have mostly been investigating how messages about masculinity manifest in our culture. Now is their opportunity to redefine what it means for them, and for the future generations of boys and men. In this summative activity, students look at alternative views of masculinity and create a project that demonstrates what it means to “be a man” in today’s world.

So, what can a new model of masculinity look like? How can it be more expansive and inclusive of all the different ways there are to be a boy or man?

In “ How to Raise a Feminist Son ,” Claire Cain Miller makes some suggestions, like letting boys be themselves:

Offer open-ended activities, like playing with blocks or clay, and encourage boys to try activities like dress-up or art class, even if they don’t seek them out, social scientists say. Call out stereotypes. (“It’s too bad that toy box shows all girls because I know boys also like to play with dollhouses.”) It could also improve the status of women. Researchers say the reason parents encourage daughters to play soccer or become doctors, but not sons to take ballet or become nurses, is that “feminine” equals lower status .

Have your students read this article, as well as one or more of the articles below for inspiration for a new model of masculinity. Allow them to identify, discuss and write about the aspects of a positive masculine identity that resonate with them most:

How would each of your students define manhood now?

Finally, let them choose one of the following projects, or come up with their own, to express what they think it means to “be a man.” Then, you might hold an exhibition for students to showcase their projects and experience all the many ways there are to be a man in today’s world.

Create a slide show, video or work of art. Have students view the slides and read the captions in The Lens slide show above , of boys coming of age in the South Bronx, and then document the lives of boys close to them in photos, drawings or videos of their own. Host a gallery showing when the projects are finished, complete with an opening reception and artists’ presentations.

Write a letter. Have students write a letter to a younger boy they know, to themselves at a younger age, to a fictional character, or to an imaginary boy or young man. What would they say to help, advise, encourage, influence or warn them, based on what they know about life, and why? What stories or wisdom would they impart?

Rewrite a children’s book or other work of literature. Ask students to share their perspectives and experiences on and of the articles above, and then have them think of examples of literature that encourages boys to pursue their dreams and fight stereotypes. Next, have them rewrite a favorite children’s book or other work of literature, one they feel could represent a healthier and fuller view toward boys and men. Volunteers can reread their new version to their classmates, with a question-and-answer period after the reading to discuss the rationale of their book’s recreation.

Compose a rebuttal . Have students read from the articles and the accompanying comments. Students can select two or three Readers Pick comments that reflect a viewpoint that skews toward toxic masculinity. Ask students to compose a letter to respond to the negative comment, using information gained from articles and class discussions.

State your opinion. Ask students, as we did in this Learning Network Student Opinion question, “ Is School Designed More for Girls Than Boys? ” and have them give specific examples on how school has changed since they have been a student. If they were on a committee to redesign their school to encourage more positive masculinity, what recommendations would they make?

Write your own obit. Have students listen to this Times podcast, “ The Last Word: Inside the Times Obits Department ,” until 5:50 minutes, and glance through the Times Obituary section for inspiration. Then, have students write their own obituary. How do students want to be remembered? What legacy do they want to leave behind? What would they like to accomplish or achieve before they die?

Start an all-male book club. After reading “ Men Have Book Clubs, Too ,” have students create their own group, with a list of boys and men they would invite to participate, and a list of the books or articles they would read over the course of a year.

Reflect on your learning. Have students write about what this unit has meant to them and why. Looking back at their thinking and at the pieces they read and watched, what have they questioned, discovered and concluded? How does what they have learned connect to their own lives in and outside of school?

Write about a role model. Invite students to write about the positive role models in their own lives — men or gender-nonconforming individuals who have demonstrated to boys that they can break free of limited notions of what it is to be male, and reach their potential as full, whole human beings. This activity can be done with personal role models or public leaders. If students choose public figures, they might search The Times to find more information on them and identify the ways they have challenged traditional norms of masculinity.

Although girls have more difficulty accessing education and make up most out-of-school children at the primary level, challenges facing boys are increasing at later stages, according to a report published on Wednesday by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Leave no child behind: Global report on boys’ disengagement from education , sheds light on the factors driving boys’ disengagement from the classroom.

The report highlights a global phenomenon: Harsh discipline, corporal punishment, and other forms of violence at school; gendered norms and expectations; and other factors, are preventing boys from achieving academically, while increasing absenteeism and dropouts.

“To make education a universal right, we need to ensure that all youth have the educational opportunities to successfully shape their lives and futures,” UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay said in the foreword.

“As this report underlines, we need to take decisive steps to keep boys in school and support them throughout their education”.

The global picture

UNESCO data reveals that for every 100 women globally, only 88 men are enrolled in tertiary education; and in 73 countries, fewer boys than girls are registered in upper-secondary schools, while the opposite is the case in a further 48 countries.

Moreover, in all regions except sub-Saharan Africa, teenagers are underrepresented in higher education – particularly in North America, Western Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, where 81 young men for every 100 young women are in fulltime learning.

In East Asia and the Pacific, the figure is 87, while in the Arab States and Central and Eastern Europe region, it is 91 per 100.

Barriers to boys’ education

Of the 160 million children engaged in labour activity in 2020, the report reveals that 97 million were boys and cites a lack of a “protective legal framework” as one of the main reasons for their exclusion.

Of 146 countries with data, only 55 have a minimum age of employment aligned with the end of the countries’ stipulated years of compulsory education and above the age of 15, while 31 per cent have a minimum age for employment below the age of 15 or do not clearly define a minimum age.

“ Poverty and child labour can lead boys to drop out,” said Ms. Azoulay, adding that to prevent this, States must urgently “ align the minimum age of employment with the end of the compulsory education .

Warning signs

In some countries, signs of boys already falling behind educationally appear at the end of the first level, according to Leave no child behind.

In 57 countries which have produced data, 10-year-old boys performed worse than girls in reading – a trend that continued at the secondary level.

This is seen across East Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Arab States, which show some of the highest risk of boys dropping out of school.

“ Fulfilling this promise of equality not only benefits boys and men; it is a step forward for all humankind ,” said Ms. Azoulay adding that “inclusive and equitable education is everyone’s business”.

Action points

The UNESCO report also reveals that only a few programmes and initiatives address the phenomenon of boys’ disengagement from education.

To prevent them from dropping out and reverse the downward spiral, it provides a set of concrete recommendations that encompass making learning safe and inclusive; investing in better data and evidence; building and financing equitable education systems; and promoting integrated and coordinated approaches to improve education for all learners.

“When everyone has equal rights and opportunities, we all stand to gain,” the UNESCO chief said.

‘Good morning my friends and teacher (s). Today, I stand before you to present my ‘Speech on importance of education’. We all want to progress and grow in our lives. Education is the only weapon that can bring peaceful and sustainable development. Every personal, professional social, and environmental issue can be solved with an educated mind. 

Every society requires educated people for overall development. A society that has more education and civilized people will flourish and sustain better than those who lack education. That is why our government and educational institutions are promoting education.

In earlier times, education was given little importance, as most people were either engaged in agricultural or different manual labor jobs. With the advancement of science and technology, different sectors, like secondary, tertiary, quaternary, and quinary emerged. 

Education is the key that unlocks doors of opportunity, enabling individuals to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society. At a personal level, education allows us to understand the world around us. It empowers us to dream big, set goals, and work towards achieving them. 

Through education, we can understand our rights and duties towards our families, society and nation. We can explore innovative ideas, as were are constantly involved in learning and growing. 

Important people like big industrialists, politicians, movie actors, and even sportspersons are all educated, as they know the importance of education in life. Their contribution is essential for innovation, productivity, and economic competitiveness.

Without education, human beings wouldn’t have arrived at the stage they are right now, and it is unlikely that we will be able to continue our missions to space progressively without education. 

And yet the truth remains that many, many people across the world do not have the right or ability to receive an education. Many of these people might be able to do great things if only they had the means to do so.

In such a scenario, it becomes important to spread awareness about education. Delivering speeches is one of the best ways to do so, as through speeches one can make a more personal connection with the people attending & make it more likely that they will actually do something about it.

However, it’s also true that education is a topic that many, many people have spoken about. In such a scenario, you might find yourself wondering what you can do to make your speech stand apart from all the ones that came before.

1. Find A Unique Angle 

Education is a topic that people have spoken about time and again. What this means is that if you deliver a speech about education without adding a different point of view to it, then the chances are your audience is going to find your speech bland or boring and not pay attention.

So, find a unique angle for the speech. Draw on your personal experiences and ask yourself: is there anything about this topic that I can see but others can’t?

2. Include Concrete Elements 

Concrete details or elements include things like facts, statistics, etc. 

If you don’t include concrete elements in your speech, then chances are that your speech will become abstract and hard to believe really fast.

So, make sure to back up your arguments with relevant information.

3. Use Language & Concepts Familiar To The Audience

Often, speakers have this misconception that the bigger or more difficult words they use, the better or smarter they’re going to sound. This cannot be further from the truth.

While using complicated words or concepts might make you sound smarter, they also increase the chances that you won’t be able to formulate a connection with the audience. 

After all, if they can’t understand what they’re saying, how will they connect with it?

4. Incorporate Storytelling & Props 

Stories are a GREAT way to make your speech more personal and engaging. And props, if used alongside your story, can take it to the next level. 

So, make sure to incorporate appropriate personal stories and props in your speech. Make sure that your prop is relevant to the speech, and not merely an accessory. 

5. Make Them Feel, Not Just Hear 

If you truly want your audience to be impacted by your speech, then you need to make them feel more deeply about it. You need to make them go beyond hearing and actually feel for you and the topic. 

This can be done by sprinkling throughout your speech elements like humor, stories, props, videos, real-life testimonials, interacting with them…

The list goes on. 

What matters is going above and beyond. You want to make your words mean more than their meaning. 

6. Use Humor

Humor is a great way to take any speech to the next level. Like stories, jokes are a great way to form a connection with the audience and make your speech more memorable.

However, one thing to keep in mind here is to make sure that your humor is relevant to the topic at hand. Don’t just add jokes for the sake of adding them: make sure that they relate to your speech in some way.

7. Don’t Have Too Many Points

While it’s important to make sure that your speech covers all aspects that it needs to cover, you don’t have to include too many points in your speech. This will make it difficult for the audience to figure out what, exactly, is the central theme or main message that you want them to take away.

You can have one or two key takeaways and divide those main points into multiple individual points. This will allow for better structure of your speech, whilst also making it easier to view it from multiple angles.

1. Open With A Story 

This is a tried and tested way to open your speech. As mentioned before, it’s imperative you incorporate stories into your speech if you wish to make a personal connection with the audience and make them feel for your speech.

2. Make Them Go ‘A-Ha’ 

Another awesome way to open your speech is by surprising your audience. This will awaken them, and snap their attention to where it needs to be: on you. 

This adds doubly to your credit if your speech is on a seemingly monotonous topic like education where the audience enters with certain expectations about the speech already in place. 

There are many ways to do this. Stories with a twist are one. Another would be incorporating a joke. Yet another way would be to pull out a prop. Or you could even say a surprising statement that seems to go against the topic when you first hear it.

3. Common-Ground Open 

A common ground opening is imperative if there is a gap between you and your audience. If, for example, you’re an aged professor from a reputed university and the audience is teenagers from a local high school, then there are going to be gaps in how you and the audience perceive the world. 

You can bridge this gap in a couple of ways. One would be making a personal connection or making them see that you are similar in certain aspects. This can be done by using humor, incorporating stories, or even making a pop culture reference. You can also open with a shared goal or interest. 

For example:  When I was in high school, all I wanted to do was get out of it.

4. Open With A Show Of Hands 

Another great way to open your speech is by asking questions–particularly show of hands questions. 

This works in two ways: asking the question piques your audience’s attention and gets their thoughts rolling. On the other hand, show-of-hands provides them with a chance to move their body, which aids in making them more aware of their surroundings i.e you. 

For example:  How many of you wish you could get out of this classroom right now?

5. Open With An Image Or Prop 

Images tell stories. And stories, as mentioned above, are one of the best ways to open your speech. 

You can open your speech by showing the audience an image of something and then asking them a question about it or presenting a startling fact about it. Alternatively, you could also open your speech by employing a relevant prop.

Title: The Missing Ramp

On a school field trip in grade 3, I met my long lost twin. Or so I thought, anyway. The boy I met wasn’t actually my twin by blood. But he was my exact replica in every other aspect: from the color of our hair and eyes to the kind of jokes we liked to make and the cartoons we loved to watch and the fact that we both felt a little out of place in the big strange world. We were similar in more aspects than we could count, more than I can remember now. However, we were significantly different in one important aspect: While I was a ten year old, happy-go-lucky kid that hated going to school, he was a ten year old, happy go-lucky kid for whom school was a distant dream. You see, Andrew–the boy I thought was my twin–had a locomotor disability. He had to use a weelchair to be able to move around. However, there was only one school in our little town, and the school had no ramps or elevators, making it impossible for him to navigate by himself the five floors that it comprised. Not only this, but there were no washrooms available for him, either. His mother could not afford to lose her job in town, not with the already soaring cost of his treatement. Her meagre salary meant that a private tutor was out of question. Besides, she thought, what was the point of uprooting her entire life to move to another town or city when–according to her–there was no point in educating her child when he could not do anything with it? And so, despite the fact that he was perfectly capable of learning at par with the rest of us, Andrew never got an education. Imagine that. Imagine being unable to go to school when all the other kids around you are doing so because the school does not have a ramp. It sounds absurd, right? However strange or unreal it may sound, it’s the reality of the lives of many, many children with disabilities. It’s not that they’re unwilling to learn or their parents are unwilling to send them to school. It’s the lack of facilities–many of which the rest of us take for granted–which make it impossible for them to attend school. And even when the facilities are available. Even then, many, many children with disabilites are unable to achieve the education that is their basic right. An estimated one in three out-of-school children have a disability. There are between 93 million and 150 million children with disabilities worldwide. And yet, WHO estimates that in many, many countries across the world, having a disability more than doubles the chances of a child never attending school. While accessibility remains the key factor that inhibits children with disabilities from attending school, there are many, many other factors that come into play. Inflexible teacher training & support is another factor that comes into play. As does inflexible curriculum and poor structure and plan. However, another key factor that prevents children with disabilites from attending school has less to do with the physical elements of education, and more with the mindset and mentality of other people. That is, it has to do with the attitude of children and teachers in school towards children with disabilites. Often, children with disabilites are scorned and made fun of by their peers. And this is not limited to students alone. The teachers, too, might share a callous attitiude and be inflexible in their approach. I had a teacher in my school who refused to change her ‘ alphabetical seating plan’ to allow a deaf girl sit in the first bench so that she could lip-read her instructions. What this means is that many times, the children themseleves might not be willing to go to school from the fear of how their peers and teachers might react to or treat them. While delivering speeches about making education accessible to all or how it is the fundamental right of every person, we tend to make grand statements and all the big steps that we need to–or should–take in order to actually make education more accessible to people. And yet, while making all those grandoise proclamations, we often overlook the little steps that each and every single one of us needs to take. In seeing the ‘big picture’, we ignore the all the little snapshots that go into making it. And yet, it is this little things that make the most difference. A missing ramp–that’s all it took to make a child miss out on his dream of going to school. I don’t think any words sum up my words better than something Annie Campbell said: “We can teach our children to flap their wings, but conditions have to be just right for them to fly.” Our children are ready to take the leap and fly. Now it is upon us to determine what the sky will be like: full or rain or brimming with sunshine.

So we all know that education in America has its fair share of problems (understatement alert). Some of these problems are sociocultural, others are economic. Some problems are practical and others still are philosophical.

In the face of these numerous and mounting challenges, elected officials and lawmakers have been short on meaningful solutions. It makes you wonder if perhaps the biggest problem with our educational system is that solutions don’t always come from the smartest of folks. Feel fee to jump to the defense of your district congressman or state senator at any time…Bueller? Bueller?

Ok. Moving on.

If you’re looking for solutions to education’s myriad problems from the smartest folks, most of them have delivered a TED Talk at some point. Technology, Entertainment, Design, or TED, is a set of global conferences operating under the tagline “Ideas Worth Spreading.”

In that spirit, here are a few education ideas from among TED’s nearly endless panel of featured speakers that we feel are worth spreading. Enjoy our first installment of 10 Awesome TED Talks on Education.

10 Awesome TED Talks on Education

1. do schools kill creativity by sir ken robinson.

Sir Ken Robinson gave this speech in February of 2006 and it has since been viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube and a remarkable 39 million times on the TED Talks website. That is more than enough time to arrive at the conclusion that the answer is probably “yes” to the titular question “Do Schools Kill Creativity?”

Robinson makes the argument that we need to rethink the fundamental premise by which we educate our children. Robinson is dry and hilarious in this insightful takedown of formal education as it exists to day. He argues that all children are born inherently creative and that school systematically squanders that creativity, and “pretty ruthlessly” at that. Robinson makes the powerful assessment that creativity should be viewed as equal in importance to literacy. Robinson also resolves that if you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original. Nonetheless, schools train students to be frightened of being wrong, and of making mistakes. Robinson laments that many highly talented, brilliant, creative people are educated to believe their talents are not valued, and perhaps even that these talents are obstacles to success.

Robinson insists that we can’t afford to continue on this way, that we need to radically rethink our view of intelligence as something diverse, dynamic, and distinct.

2. How To Fix a Broken School? Lead Fearlessly, Love Hard by Linda Ciatt-Wayman

With 1.3 million views on the TED Talks website, and 87,000 views on YouTube, Cliatt-Wayman’s May 2015 Talk casts a blinding light on the reality facing students and educators alike in “low-performing” inner-city schools. As a graduate and principal of North Philadelphia schools, Cliatt-Wayman gives a stirring and personal speech, one that moved many in the audience to tears. Cliatt-Wayman charged that what we call low-performing schools are often not schools at all, that the chains on the doors, the darkened hallways and the half-empty classrooms do not imply places of learning.

Cliatt-Wayman shares her strategies as a principal for transforming dark, dangerous, and frightening North Philadelphia schools from havens for drugs, weapons and violence to havens for disincline, enrichment, and love. Her experiential wisdom makes for a poignant Talk, anchored by a few of the slogans that have produced meaningful change at her Strawberry Mansion High School (where it bears noting she was the fourth principle in four years).

Cliatt-Wayman advises that “If you’re going to lead, LEAD,” an attitude that contributed to changes large and small at her troubled school, from replacing lightbulbs and decorating bulletin boards to recasting the way the school day is scheduled and transforming the budget. She also told educators that eliminating excuses at every turn is the primary responsibility for leaders at struggling schools. Finally and fundamentally, she said that it is the job of educators to offer their students hope, undivided attention, unwavering belief in their potential, consistent expectations, and unconditional love.

3. Teaching the World Peace Game by John Hunter

Filmed in March of 2011, and viewed just under 1.3 million times on TED Talks, 228,000 times on YouTube, “Teaching the World Peace Game” provides an energizing demonstration of how we can use classroom time to cultivate students who will one day be leaders, innovators and decision-makers.

Public School teacher John Hunter is warm, funny and personable as he explains his extraordinary approach to stimulating interactive learning among gifted students. Hunter demos the multi-tiered, map-based gameboard—basically Risk on anabolic steroids—that he has used to engage students since the late 1970s. The goal of the game is to do nothing less than solve the world’s problems. Students are handed a planet and a list of encompassing crises—not unlike the world that they will eventually inherit from prior generations.

The class collaborates, debates and compromises on developing solutions for issues as far-reaching as ethnic tension, nuclear proliferation, environmental disasters, water rights disputes and basically the entire grab-bag of seemingly insoluble problems that they will one day be asked to solve. Indeed, John told the audience that he’d happily send his fourth graders to consult Al Gore because they succeeded in solving the problem of global warming in a single week.

Hunter demonstrates both how educators can excite the imagination of their students and how they can nurture the young minds that will eventually be required to shape our world for the better. What most fascinates about Hunter’s experience is the fact that his students ultimately manifested strategies in ways that no educator could possibly predict, suggesting that the best educational results come when students are allowed to arrive at their own answers and solutions.

4. Our Failing Schools. Enough is Enough by Geoffrey Canada

In May of 2013, Geoffrey Canada delivered an impassioned talk that has been viewed 188,000+ times on YouTube and more than 1.5 million times on the TED Talks website. Canada levies an accusation that’s pretty hard to dispute, claiming that in spite of our long track record of educational failure, we’ve basically done nothing to improve our outcomes. From both a scientific perspective and a business perspective, Canada says that our approach to education simply doesn’t make sense.

We’re losing kids, we know we’re losing kids, and yet we simply don’t allow real educational innovation to occur. He asks the audience to imagine a world in which we took the same stagnating approach to technology as we did to education. Whereas we respond to failure in this sector by probing for yet greater achievement, the education business has failed to use science to improve its approach to children.

To much approval from the audience, Canada attests that what sets him apart from many education policy-makers is that he “actually likes kids.” In this spirit, he remarks just how strange it is that we spend billions of dollars on standardized testing, that we gather enormous troves of incredible data, and that we fail to use them to actually help students in either a timely or effective manner.

Canada urges that its time to try something different. He insists that we must keep innovating in education until we nail the science down. We cannot wait another 50 years to get this right. He warns that here is an educational cliff and that we are walking over it right this very second.

5. The Nerd’s Guide To Learning Everything Online by John Green

John Green’s Talk, from November of 2012, has been viewed roughly 2.8 million times on the Ted Talks website and does not appear to have been published on YouTube.

Green takes a little bit of time to get to the point. Fortunately, he does so in a decidedly engrossing fashion. Green analogizes the lifelong quest for knowledge to cartography. Learning, he explains, makes the map of your life bigger. When you begin learning, you may not know every location on the map but you do have an instrument that tells you where you’d like to go. As Green phrases it, you’ve seen the coastline but now you want to explore the land.

When we’re young—and to the extent that we manage to develop a love for learning in school—we get to be part of a physical community of learning. Green advises that as we age out of school, we often lose that level of engagement. He shows how online forums like YouTube are restoring our opportunity to be part of a fluid, active and dynamic learning community.

Green demonstrates the variety and intuition with which YouTube can teach and invite learning, all in real-time. Green notes that videos which aim to teach are not necessarily being viewed in classrooms but independently by individuals electing to be part of a learning community. The centerpiece of his Talk is the resolution that these virtual spaces have become, for a new generation of learners, the kind of communities we used to have as students, communities that allow us to continue following our own learning maps into adulthood.

6. The Key To Success? Grit by Angela Lee Duckworth

Filmed in April of 2013, viewed by roughly 1.6 million on YouTube, and by 8.5 million viewers on the TED Talks website, Angela Lee Duckworth’s Talk brings some level of scientific rigor to a character trait that has rarely been measured thusly.

Often millennials are disparaged for being soft and entitled. If this criticism has any basis in reality, Duckworth’s concise Talk is something today’s students and parents need to watch. Duckworth argues that we need to achieve a better understanding of students and learning from a motivational and psychological perspective. She contends that schools are only really effective at measuring I.Q. and asks if success in school and life require more than just being able to learn quickly.

More than social charisma, attractiveness, and intelligence, Duckworth’s experience and research led her to conclude that grit—day-in day-out hard work and determination—is the trait that most determines success. Measuring traits of grittiness among her own students, Duckworth learned that grittier kids—marathon runners rather sprinters—generally succeeded best, independent of talent and intelligence. In spite of just how determinant an impact grit has, Duckworth concedes that science knows precious little on the subject.

Accordingly, Duckworth promotes “growth mindset,” the belief that the ability to learn can change with one’s effort. In Duckworth’s findings, the fascinating trait that most differentiates gritty people from their softer counterparts is that they don’t view failure as a permanent condition. Duckworth admits that her remarks are brief because we simply don’t know much about grit. Her speech ultimately suggests itself as a starting point for improving our understanding of what might be a key determinant of success. Among TED Talks, Duckworth’s is brief but instructive.

7. Let’s Use Video to Reinvent Education by Salman Khan

Salman Khan’s Talk from March of 2011 doesn’t necessarily break any new ground. Instead it reaffirms that, at least in one regard, we are moving in the right direction. Even if schools aren’t taking the active steps to revolutionize education, at least technologists and web users are. Viewed roughly 900,000 times on YouTube and 4 million times on the TED Talks website, Khan’s Talk deals largely with the positive impact that web-based video-education can have on learners. Indeed, Khan scored his best laugh when he informed his audience that as a former analyst for a hedge fund, he wasn’t accustomed to doing something of social value.

But that’s exactly what happened when he started tutoring his cousin remotely. As part of the process, Khan began producing explanatory YouTube videos to accompany individual lessons and quickly found that his cousin preferred the videos to live instruction. Getting past the “backhanded” nature of that compliment, Khan discusses the ways that video learning can help to improve the individuality, accessibility, and comprehensibility of instruction. Rather than using video to supplement the classroom experience, Khan made a case for allowing video instruction to transform the way we approach classroom time.

Khan’s approach transposes the classroom and homework experiences. As teachers assigned his videos for self-guided after-school instruction, they found that classroom time was freed up for problem-solving, game-playing and innovation-building. Teachers also used this time to provide individual attention and in-class guidance to students while they completed assignments. Ironically, remarks Khan, the impact of replacing human instruction with video instruction was a humanization of the otherwise dehumanizing process of sitting in a classroom listening to a monolithic lecture. Khan’s presentation ultimately demonstrates that video instruction, properly dispatched, can be used to individualize learning outside of the classroom while transforming the in-class experience into something far more personal and stimulating.

8. Teachers need real feedback by Bill Gates

If you’ve ever seen Bill Gates speak, then you know this one isn’t breathtakingly exciting. It does, however, inform on a major shortcoming in our educational system, and one that may help to explain why so many other countries outperform the U.S. in math, science and reading. Filmed in March of 2013, Gates’ Talk has been viewed roughly 293,000 times on YouTube and just under 2 million times on the TED Talks website.

Gates laments that teachers receive woefully inadequate feedback on how to improve their practice. The Microsoft magnate argues that the system in place is unfair to teachers and is consequently unfair to students.

Gates diverges with a brief video featuring a teacher who uses a camera to record her classroom lessons. Not unlike a quarterback, the teacher explains that she revisits her tapes following each lesson in order to dissect her own performance. Gates suggests that this method could be a pathway to providing teachers with real-time diagnoses on their performance and could ultimately help schools develop the tools they need to act on these diagnoses. Again, this won’t be the most entertaining TED Talk you’ll ever watch (and the visual aids just scream Windows ’98), but Gates is right. Teachers need feedback that’s actually designed to help. The real value of this Talk is that a person of visible influence is making that case.

9. Mathematics and Sex by Clio Cresswell

If you’ve just finished with the Gates Talk and you’re looking for something a little more…stimulating…this one is your next logical stop. More than 3.6 million YouTube viewers have indulged their curiosity in mathematics since Cresswell delivered her April 2014 Talk.

Full disclosure, this isn’t as much about sex as how sexy math can be, whether it’s used to detect inconsistencies in how people report their sexual activeness or in designing the perfect piece of chocolate. Cresswell draws playful connections between sexuality and mathematics, two natural conditions which transcend human culture, in order to demonstrate the fact that mathematics can provide new insight and understanding into all things around us.

The value of Cresswell’s presentation is in its appeal to those who are not of an inherently mathematical disposition. She reveals just how fascinating and all-encompassing mathematics are, and just how scintillating they can be.

10. Why Some of Us Don’t Have One True Calling by Emilie Wapnick

This talk centers around the oft-posed question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” Wapnick’s Talk has been viewed 261,000+ views on YouTube and 2.7 Million on the TED Talks website since being delivered in April of 2015.

The troubling implication of Wapnick’s leading question is that we are raised to believe that we have no recourse but to choose a single path of personal and professional development. This question, which is innocent and entertaining when we’re young but which imposes stress and insecurity as we grow older, implies that we each have one great thing that we are meant to do while we’re here on this earth and that we have to figure out what that thing is and devote our lives to it.

But what of those who have many interests, whose passions and intelligences can’t be bottled as a single elixir? Wapnick calls these individuals “multipotentialites.” For those who have been instructed that they must pursue a single true calling, Wapnick says its easy to see multipotentiality as a flaw to be overcome but she argues that multipotentialites have superpowers, among them idea synthesis, rapid learning, adaptability.

We need creative thinkers to tackle the world’s problems, Wapnick argues. Accordingly, says Wapnick, we should all be pursuing careers based on how we’re wired. She advises “embrace your inner-wiring, whatever that may be. If you’re a specialist at heart, by all means specialize…To the multipotentialites…embrace your many passions, follow your curiosity down those rabbit holes, explore your intersections.”

Thus, education is nothing but all-round development of the individual’s personality. Education is a process of man-making. Hence, education is necessary for all.

As per the report of the Kothari Commission, “the destiny of India is being shaped in its classrooms.” Education ingrain civic and social responsibility among everyone. India is a land of diversities. Therefore, in order to bring unity, education is a means for emotional integration. We cannot do without any kind of education. Education is an essential aspect of human development. Education is a means of achieving a world of peace, justice, freedom, and equality for all. Thus, education is extremely necessary for all. No good life is possible without education.

It indorses the intelligence of human beings, develops his skill, and enables him to be industrious. It ensures his progress. Education also channelizes the undeveloped capacities, attitude, interest, urges and needs of the individual into desirable channels. The individual can adjust and modify his environment with the help of education as per his need.

Problems and Prospects

In a democratic country, education is necessary for all its citizens. Unless all the citizens get education, democratic machinery cannot work well. So we may emphasize that the problem of equality of educational opportunities in Indian. This situation is a very formidable one.

Our education system is at cross-roads. The Indian constitution enacted that there should be a universalization of primary education. In the order of the constitution, it was indicated that compulsory education must be for all children up to the age of 14. The universalization of elementary education has been implemented as a national goal. ‘Education for all’ is now an international goal.

The main problems are finances. Rural-urban disparity due to illiteracy. Women’s education, economic conditions of backward communities and non-availability of equipment are some other major problems.

Strategies and efforts at the national and international level

Universal elementary education has run the formulation of the project “education for all”. The provision of article 45 of the Indian constitution is a noble determination for the universalization of elementary education. Big efforts have been made to reach the goal of providing elementary education to every child of the country through, universal enrolment, universal provision, and universal retention.

Our constitution is making arrangements for free and compulsory education with the right of minorities to establish educational institutions. As well as there are education for weaker sections, secular education, women’s education, instruction in the mother-tongue at the primary stage, etc. These constitutional provisions are nothing but our effort to achieve the target of the project “Education for all”.

Thus, in the end, we find that education is a significant factor for achieving success, building characters, and for living a wholesome and happy life. True education always humanizes the person. In this reference, “Education for all” has become an international goal for both developed and developing countries.

Hello, Everyone. Today, I am presenting a speech on education and why it is important. Before I get started I want to wish you all the best wishes for the day & also thank you for having me this valuable opportunity.

So. What is education? First of all, Education is not only related to books. schools, colleges & institutions. According to Wikipedia “ Education  is the process of the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, and habits”. Hence the one who is open to learning is a student. And he who learns, he achieves.

Education is a basic right for all humans on the planet. Uneducated people in society are shameful to all of us. The government should ensure education for each and all in the country.

Education is the most powerful tool in the world. It can change one’s life beyond imagination. Today, all the prosperity we witness is an outcome of education. If we compare today’s world with the world decades ago, the changes are because of education’s power.

In history. All the great and wise personalities have emphasised the power of education. From Aristotle to Nelson Mandella, From A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to Swami Vivekananda. Everyone tried to explain how education is important to make this planet a better and more beautiful place to live on.

Unfortunately, today we see that everything is messed up. The planet rapidly is becoming a hell to live on. It directly refers to that education is not performing well . To make education perform to its highest efficiency, we need to adopt the concept of “ Each one Teach one “.

Education is a fundamental right of each individual on earth. To reject this fact is wrong. Illiterate youth is the most critical thing for Humankind. Education helps society to get rid of unreasonable beliefs, wrong rituals, and social issues.

Educated people make an educated society and educated societies make an educated nation. Only an educated nation can take the world to new heights of possibilities. The importance of education is completely grasped that’s why education as a national policy is always given the first priority.

An educated society has a powerful bonding among its individuals. Because, people from all sections, castes and creeds gather to obtain knowledge. Thus, education is the initial thing that brings the younger ones together and develops an unusual bonding between them. This means there will be no unreasonable clashes among people.

Be it an individual’s success, achievements, progress & prosperity or of an organisation, society or country, education is a vital factor that can not be ignored. Education can fetch you outcomes beyond one’s expectations.

Before I continue my speech on “Education is the key to success”, I would like to wish you all the best for the day and also want to pay thanks to all of you for having me a chance to share my thoughts.

If we analyse the present world with a thousand-year past world, What difference do you derive? We have constantly developed ourselves and the world in this previous time. All these changes are the outcomes of education. Education does not mean the stuff provided in schools and colleges . It is actually a system to take someone on the path of progress.

Technologies and advancements in each field made our life so smooth and comfortable. All this was only possible because of education. With the help of education, We have evolved various methods to provide the world with a better life.

Education provides you with knowledge and facts. It expands your thought process and enables a man to interpret everything by himself instead of gathering notions. One can quickly make decisions about his life using his own intelligence. It also helps you to live a stable life and makes you mentally healthy.

Did you ever storm your mind on how education can change the world? Let me present my own opinions. First of all, Education eliminates inequality in society making everyone equal. This will eradicate unreasonable clashes among people.

Second, It provides you with the ability to read and write. So, you can acquire knowledge from books whenever you want & whatever you want. It means you are open to each field’s knowledge all the time.

Third, It gives you a sense of communication that refines one’s speech. Number four, It increases the chances of getting a high-paying job making you employed and achieving a secure life. Number five, education gives you the sense to understand the value of discipline, time and ethnicity. It gives the capability to make a balance in life.

I presented some effects of education on an individual but I also have a list of how education can impact societies. Do correct me in between if I am wrong.

Now it is a turn to talk at a level of a country means how a country is impacted by education. A solid educational system acts for the good of the country. A country is largely judged by its education system and economy.

Any nation is developing day by day just because of its education and technology. Educated people know the difference between a genuine and a corrupt leader for their country.

Educated people understand why to vote for a party to make a positive resolution to the country’s growth. Due to the lack of education, people are left unemployed revealing the cheap level of the economic status of a country. The pathetic situation of a country prevents its growth and improvement. Thus, education is fundamental to increasing economic growth and enhancing income.

Investing in girls’ education transforms communities, countries and the entire world. Girls who receive an education are less likely to marry young and more likely to lead healthy, productive lives. They earn higher incomes, participate in the decisions that most affect them, and build better futures for themselves and their families.

Girls’ education strengthens economies and reduces inequality. It contributes to more stable, resilient societies that give all individuals – including boys and men – the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

But education for girls is about more than access to school. It’s also about girls feeling safe in classrooms and supported in the subjects and careers they choose to pursue – including those in which they are often under-represented.

When we invest in girls’ secondary education

  • The lifetime earnings of girls dramatically increase
  • National growth rates rise
  • Child marriage rates decline
  • Child mortality rates fall
  • Maternal mortality rates fall
  • Child stunting drops

Why are girls out of school?

Despite evidence demonstrating how central girls’ education is to development, gender disparities in education persist.

Around the world, 129 million girls are out of school, including 32 million of primary school age, 30 million of lower-secondary school age, and 67 million of upper-secondary school age. In countries affected by conflict, girls are more than twice as likely to be out of school than girls living in non-affected countries.

Worldwide, 129 million girls are out of school.

Only 49 per cent of countries have achieved gender parity in primary education. At the secondary level, the gap widens: 42 per cent of countries have achieved gender parity in lower secondary education, and 24 per cent in upper secondary education.

The reasons are many. Barriers to girls’ education – like poverty, child marriage and gender-based violence – vary among countries and communities. Poor families often favour boys when investing in education.

In some places, schools do not meet the safety, hygiene or sanitation needs of girls. In others, teaching practices are not gender-responsive and result in gender gaps in learning and skills development.

Gender equality in education

Gender-equitable education systems empower girls and boys and promote the development of life skills – like self-management, communication, negotiation and critical thinking – that young people need to succeed. They close skills gaps that perpetuate pay gaps, and build prosperity for entire countries.

Gender-equitable education systems can contribute to reductions in school-related gender-based violence and harmful practices, including child marriage and female genital mutilation .

Gender-equitable education systems help keep both girls and boys in school, building prosperity for entire countries.

An education free of negative gender norms has direct benefits for boys, too. In many countries, norms around masculinity can fuel disengagement from school, child labour, gang violence and recruitment into armed groups. The need or desire to earn an income also causes boys to drop out of secondary school, as many of them believe the curriculum is not relevant to work opportunities.

UNICEF’s work to promote girls’ education

UNICEF works with communities, Governments and partners to remove barriers to girls’ education and promote gender equality in education – even in the most challenging settings.

Because investing in girls’ secondary education is one of the most transformative development strategies, we prioritize efforts that enable all girls to complete secondary education and develop the knowledge and skills they need for life and work.

This will only be achieved when the most disadvantaged girls are supported to enter and complete pre-primary and primary education. Our work:

  • Tackles discriminatory gender norms and harmful practices that deny girls access to school and quality learning.
  • Supports Governments to ensure that budgets are gender-responsive and that national education plans and policies prioritize gender equality.
  • Helps schools and Governments use assessment data to eliminate gender gaps in learning.
  • Promotes social protection measures, including cash transfers, to improve girls’ transition to and retention in secondary school.
  • Focuses teacher training and professional development on gender-responsive pedagogies.
  • Removes gender stereotypes from learning materials.
  • Addresses other obstacles, like distance-related barriers to education, re-entry policies for young mothers, and menstrual hygiene management in schools.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, good morning to you all. Today, I want to talk about something very important, something that’s as crucial as learning Math or Science. It’s called Physical Education, or PE for short.

Now, PE is not just about running around in the playground or kicking a ball. It’s much more than that. It’s about keeping our bodies healthy and strong. You see, our bodies are like machines, and just like a car needs fuel to run, our bodies need exercise to stay in top shape.

Exercise not only makes us strong, it also keeps our minds sharp. Have you ever noticed how you feel more awake and alert after a good run? That’s because exercise pumps more oxygen to your brain, helping you think better. So, PE helps us do better in all our other subjects too!

But that’s not all. PE also teaches us important life skills like teamwork, leadership, and discipline. When we play a team sport, we learn to work together, to lead, and to follow rules. These skills are important not just on the playground, but in all areas of our life.

Lastly, PE is fun! It’s a break from sitting in class, a time to be outside, to play, to laugh, and to make friends. It’s a time to enjoy, to let loose, and to be ourselves.

So, let’s make PE a priority. Let’s play, let’s learn, and let’s grow – not just in mind, but in body too. Because a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, and a healthy mind can achieve anything. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Physical Education

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls,

I stand before you today to talk about something that is as important as Math, Science, or English. It’s called Physical Education, or PE. Now, you might be thinking, “Why is PE as important as those other subjects?” Well, let me tell you.

Firstly, PE helps us stay fit and healthy. Just like eating fruits and vegetables helps our body to grow strong, physical activities help our muscles and bones to stay strong. When we run, jump, or play games in PE, we are doing much more than just having fun. We are keeping our bodies healthy and strong.

Secondly, PE teaches us about teamwork. When we play team games like soccer or basketball, we learn to work together with our friends. We learn that winning is not just about one person scoring all the goals. It’s about everyone working together, passing the ball, and helping each other. This is a very important lesson, not just in sports, but also in life.

Thirdly, PE helps us to concentrate better in class. It might sound strange, but it’s true. When we exercise, our brains get more oxygen, which helps us think better. So, after a good PE class, you might find that Math or English is a little easier.

Fourthly, PE helps us to feel good about ourselves. When we learn a new sport or master a difficult move, we feel proud. We learn that with practice and patience, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. This boosts our confidence and makes us feel good about ourselves.

Lastly, PE is fun! It’s a break from sitting at our desks and studying. It’s a chance to run around, play, laugh, and just have a good time. And having fun is important, isn’t it?

In conclusion, Physical Education is not just about playing games. It’s about staying healthy, learning teamwork, concentrating better, feeling good about ourselves, and having fun. So, let’s all remember to give our best in PE class, not just for the sake of grades, but for our own well-being.

Remember, a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. So, let’s all embrace Physical Education as an essential part of our learning journey. Thank you!

Department of Education’s New Title IX Rule Just as Bad as Expected

The Department of Education just released its long-delayed Title IX rule —a rewrite of the 50 year-old civil rights law so vast that it promises to turn Title IX’s guarantee of sex equality in education completely upside down.  

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 is all of a single sentence. It simply bars sex discrimination in any federally funded education program. It does not matter how much federal funding a school or institution of higher education receives. And it does not matter whether such funding from the federal government is direct or indirect. So yes, even the vast majority of private schools must comply with the rule.   

But this simple longstanding prohibition on sex discrimination has been manipulated by the Biden administration to both undermine constitutional freedoms—like the freedom of speech—and erase the very women that Title IX was enacted to protect.  

The Department of Education has unilaterally expanded the prohibition against discrimination based on “sex” to include a prohibition against discrimination based on: “sex stereotypes, sex-related characteristics (including intersex traits), pregnancy or related conditions, sexual orientation, and gender identity.” 

Under the Biden administration’s sweeping new Title IX rule, any K–12 school or institution of higher education that receives any federal funding would have to open girls’ bathrooms, locker rooms, housing accommodations, sports teams, and any other sex-separated educational program or offering to biological boys who claim to “identify” as girls. Similarly, boys’ facilities would have to be accessible to biological girls who “identify” as boys. 

And the law’s decimation of equality doesn’t stop there. The regulations also eliminate due process protections for students accused of sexual misconduct (like the right to call witnesses, introduce evidence, or be represented by counsel during an investigation), and violates the First Amendment to the Constitution by forcing teachers and fellow students to use of a student’s “preferred pronouns.”  

The regulations also require K-12 schools to accept a child’s gender identity regardless of biological sex without providing any notice to, much less seeking the approval of, the child’s parents. 

And while the Education Department has punted, at least for the moment, on its second Title IX rule—one that applies only to athletics—the Biden administration’s representation that sports are not included in today’s rule is a complete head fake. By expanding the definition of “sex” to include “gender identity” and applying the rule to all “extracurricular activities,” male and female athletic teams will be a thing of the past. Indeed, the word “athletics” appears in the new rule at least 31 times. 

Furthermore, the Department of Education’s reading of Title IX lacks any support in the text of the title, its implementing regulations, and the law’s congressional history.  

Congress had a chance in 1987 to amend the Title IX “sex” definition to include “gender identity,” when it amended Title IX under the Civil Rights Restoration Act. But it did not.  

Executive agencies are empowered only to promulgate “rules” or “regulations” that implement or interpret laws passed by Congress—not to create completely new laws.  

Apparently, the Department of Education has forgotten that.   

Now the question isn’t if legal challenges will follow, but how fast they’ll come.  

The Independent Women’s Law Center has already indicated it is readying a lawsuit against the Department of Education. Others are likely to follow. Let’s hope so.

Columbia leaders face scrutiny from lawmakers on campus antisemitism

The school’s president and other leaders testified before the house committee on education and the workforce about changes they are making.

Columbia University leaders faced scrutiny from lawmakers Wednesday about what they have done to combat campus antisemitism since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war , which has touched off intense protests at colleges across the country.

Some of the most pointed questions centered on individual faculty members and remarks they had made in support of Palestinian rights and Hamas before and after the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by the militant group — and what the university had done in response.

In one case, Columbia’s president, Minouche Shafik, said that a faculty member had been terminated. “He will never teach at Columbia again.”

But many of the members of Congress expressed incredulity and disdain as they read statements made by faculty members, and cut university leaders off as they tried to respond.

University leaders repeatedly expressed concern and contrition, and they vowed that they were working to make changes, including making it easier to report incidents and enforcing rules.

The hearing was contentious, but much less so than an earlier hearing; several committee members complimented the witnesses on answering more directly.

In December, the presidents of MIT, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania testified on campus antisemitism before the Republican-led House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Lawmakers repeatedly asked whether calls for the genocide of Jews violated their campus policies, and the presidents’ cautious, legalistic responses shocked many when they declined to say yes. Within weeks, the presidents of Penn and Harvard, under pressure on various fronts, had resigned.

“Certainly, that hearing touched a nerve in the public and elevated the issue,” said Jonathan Fansmith, a senior vice president at the American Council on Education.

What had been a policy discussion in higher education abruptly became part of the popular conversation, he said — complete with a “Saturday Night Live” skit mocking the spectacle. People debated free speech on campus and the political context, with questions about whether colleges are excessively left-leaning or whether conservative critics had chosen elite private schools as an easy target.

Six months after the war began, many colleges are still struggling to find the balance between students’ right to speak out and protest with the need to ensure campuses are safe, welcoming environments.

The House committee opened an investigation into campus antisemitism, demanding information from Harvard , Penn, MIT, Rutgers, the University of California at Berkeley and Columbia.

Outside the closed doors of the packed House committee hearing room, Columbia University students shouted, “Let the students in! Let the students in!”

After the hearing ended, a student burst in with hands painted red and called out, “Being pro-Palestinian is not antisemitic!”

At Columbia, pro-Palestinian students erected tents before dawn at the center of campus.

Inside the hearing there were Jewish students, listening and occasionally reacting to the testimony. Afterward, several said they were pleased with much of what they had heard. Maya Platek, a junior, came from New York despite a broken leg that requires crutches, because the issue is so important to her, she said; she started a petition against a professor at Columbia and was pleased to hear Shafik and the other university leaders condemn the rhetoric he had used about the Oct. 7 attack in an article.

“I was hoping that today might actually change things,” she said, and she is hopeful that the hearing marks a turning point after which the university takes stronger action to protect Jewish and Israeli students.

Joseph Massad, the faculty member Platek had objected to, contested the characterization by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) and others of his article about the Oct. 7 attack in an email to The Washington Post. He said he has never supported terrorism and has not been notified by the university that he is under investigation.

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), chair of the House committee, said that “the raw, visceral reaction of the nation to the unveiling of antisemitism at so-called elite institutions is indicative of the growing disconnect between the people and those universities,” and loss of public trust in higher education.

Foxx questioned the enforcement Columbia leaders said they had implemented, and at the end of the hearing she said that while some changes had occurred, there was still much work to be done — and that the committee was prepared to bring them back if they didn’t see tangible progress.

Fansmith said afterward that university leaders had been able to convey urgency and detail many of the changes they have been putting in place, as well as some of the complexities of altering policies around speech and faculty and student discipline.

“They were pretty open about where they’ve had failures, where they’ve had difficulties, where they’re still working to resolve things, and where things are underway to address those failures,” he said.

Shafik had been asked to testify in December as well but had a prior commitment.

Last month, Foxx summoned Shafik and the co-chairs of Columbia’s board of trustees, Claire Shipman and David Greenwald, to answer questions before the committee, saying the university has not enforced its policies to protect Jewish students despite severe and pervasive antisemitism.

David M. Schizer, dean emeritus of Columbia’s law school, who is helping lead the university’s antisemitism task force , was a witness at the hearing Wednesday, as well.

Schizer opened with his own family history. His grandfather’s grandfather was killed in a pogrom in Ukraine, and his grandfather was put against a wall “by a bunch of antisemitic thugs,” who threatened to shoot him, Schizer said. He fled and, ultimately, was able to attend Columbia. “That changed his life,” Schizer said.

For well over a century, he said, “Columbia has been a welcoming place for people of diverse backgrounds from all over the world, including Jewish families like mine.”

He said he has heard heartbreaking stories, including from a student wearing a shirt with an Israeli flag who was surrounded by protesters and pinned against a brick wall. Schizer’s first thought, he said, was of his grandfather.

Incidents this year include Jewish students reporting being cursed at, assaulted and spat upon. Pro-Palestinian protests have included calls such as “Death to the Zionist state!” and for globalization of the intifada.

Earlier this month, the university suspended some students for participating in an event billed as “Resistance 101” held in student housing that the university had barred. Shafik said the event included speakers known to support terrorism and promote violence.

Shafik declined an interview before the hearing. But in an essay in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, she wrote about how deeply and personally the war has been felt by thousands of people on campus.

She wrote about the difficulty of balancing the free-speech rights of pro-Palestinian protesters and the impact their demonstrations have had on Jewish students, and she said the university is figuring out boundaries, such as designating appropriate space for protests .

Columbia’s website already states the answer to a question that tripped up the other presidents: “Calls for genocide against the Jewish community or any other group are abhorrent, inconsistent with our values and against our rules. Incitement to violence against members of our community will not be tolerated.”

When Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) asked for a yes-or-no answer to the question, “Does calling for the genocide of Jews violate Columbia’s code of conduct?” each of the witnesses quickly and succinctly answered that yes, it does.

After some other questions — including, at times, regarding specific sanctions against individual faculty members — Shafik hesitated and said she needed to confirm information.

The university is being scrutinized on several fronts. Lawsuits have been filed by both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian groups, and the Education Department has an open investigation , as it does into numerous schools.

Columbia University president grilled about campus antisemitism at congressional hearing

Columbia University’s president strongly denounced antisemitism during a congressional hearing Wednesday, saying that after Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, “the world changed, and so did my focus.”

“Antisemitism has no place on our campus, and I am personally committed to doing everything I can to confront it directly,” President Nemat “Minouche” Shafik told the Republican-led House Committee on Education and the Workforce. “Israel was brutally attacked by Hamas terrorists and very soon it became clear that these horrific events would ignite fear and anguish across our campus.”

Shafik faced questions about her handling of antisemitism on campus after the Oct. 7 attack alongside two members of Columbia's Board of Trustees and the head of the university's antisemitism task force. She faced particular scrutiny for how the university handled faculty members who made comments about Hamas that were perceived as antisemitic.

Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., grilled Shafik about Joseph Massad, a tenured professor in Columbia’s Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies department who published comments in October calling Hamas' attack a “ stunning victory .”

“I do condemn his statement. I am appalled by what he said,” Shafik responded. “He has been spoken to.”

The hearing became particularly heated when Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., pressed Shafik about why Massad is still listed on Columbia’s website as the chair of the academic review committee.

Stefanik asked Shafik for her commitment that Massad would be removed as chair, and Shafik said she would get back to her.

Stefanik also questioned Shafik about Mohamed Abdou, a visiting professor at the Middle East Institute at Columbia. She referred to an Oct. 11 post on Facebook in which Abdou wrote, “Yes, I’m with the muqawamah (the resistance) be it Hamas and Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad but up to a point.”

When asked about consequences, Shafik said Abdou “will never work at Columbia again.”

Her appearance in Congress came after she declined to testify at a hearing in December, citing scheduling conflicts.

That hearing included testimonies from the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who all drew intense scrutiny for their responses to questions regarding antisemitism and hate speech on campus. Penn and Harvard 's presidents have since resigned.

When Shafik and her colleagues were asked by Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., whether calling for the genocide of Jewish people violates Columbia’s rules — the same question posed to Harvard, MIT and Penn’s presidents — all answered “yes.” Bonamici also asked Shafik about the chants “by any means necessary” and “intifada,” which Shafik said were distressing.

Noa Fay, a Jewish student at Columbia who attended the hearing, told NBC News that she was "underwhelmed" by Shafik's testimony. Fay added that last semester it was “nearly impossible for me to get through academically and mentally” because of antisemitism she said she experienced on campus.

“I’m an RA, and last semester, all my bulletin boards that I post up in our halls were vandalized, written with ‘stop supporting genocide, cease-fire, free Palestine, from the river to the sea,’ all of these things,” Fay said. “It has consumed every aspect of our student life.”

Ahead of her hearing, Shafik published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal about what she planned to say in her testimony to Congress.

"Since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, I have spent the most of my time addressing its aftershocks," Shafik wrote. "It is hard to describe how difficult this has been, especially on a large, diverse urban campus with students from all over the world and a long tradition of political activism."

Columbia is being sued by five Jewish students and two student organizations after it suspended the student groups Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace in November. In March, Shafik confirmed that a "number" of Columbia students were suspended after allegedly participating in an unauthorized panel called "Resistance 101" that featured speakers who supported Hamas.

Queer protestors shut down on-campus speech by anti-LGBTQ+ educational leader

R yan Walters, the right-wing superintendent of the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE), only spoke for about 12 minutes before ending his talk at Oklahoma State University (OSU) yesterday. During his on-campus appearance, pro-LGBTQ+ protestors angrily shouted him down, calling him a “fascist” and saying that the blood of a recently deceased nonbinary student was on his hands.

Walters had been invited to speak by a campus chapter of Turning Point USA. The organization’s founder, Charlie Kirk, has  attacked transgender people and described opposition to religious exemptions as “fascism.” About 100 people attended Walters’ talk in the campus engineering building. Walters spoke without a mic and barely got a word out before protestors began shouting.

“You’re a power-hungry fascist,” one protestor in particular yelled, adding, “Nex’s blood is on your hands!”

The protestor’s latter comment referred to Nex Benedict , a 16-year-old transgender Native American student who died on February 8 after an alleged assault by three bullies in his high school bathroom. Community members blame Walters’s anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and policies for contributing to an atmosphere of hostility toward queer students and harming the mental health of queer youth.

Other protestors yelled, “Where is your budget? Where is your staff?” These comments referenced the fact that all of OSDE’s lawyers , Walters’ Chief of Staff Jenna Thomas , Executive Director of Accreditation Ryan Pieper, and Program Manager of Grant Development and Compliance Pamela Smith-Gordon are just some of over 130 staff members who have left OSDE since Walters took office, KFOR reported .

Walters has also neglected, as promised, to send an annual budget to state legislators by last January. Democratic state legislators have said that Walters’ new OSDE rules, including one against “pornographic” LGBTQ+ materials in schools, have been made without legislative oversight and are, thus, unenforceable.

Nevertheless, at his brief on-campus talk, Walters said, “Never back down to a woke mob…. They think they can yell, they think they can scream, they can throw a hissy fit.” Then, 12 minutes into his talk — most of which was drowned out by yelling protestors — Walters backed down.

After unsuccessfully fielding a few questions from members of Turning Point USA, an event organizer went up to Walters, spoke in his ear, and after, Walters waved to the crowd, mouthed “Thank you,” and was ushered out the back door by the group’s members, KFOR reported .

Walters, who wants to  ban LGBTQ+ books but teach the Bible in public school history classes , has previously  pushed the transphobic lie about schools providing litterboxes to students  who identify as cats. He also  referred to teachers’ unions as “terrorist organizations”  and  illegally tried to make rules  banning LGBTQ+ books and transgender bathroom access in schools. He has appeared at events hosted by Moms for Liberty, a right-wing anti-LGBTQ+ “parent’s rights” group that has been called  an extremist hate group  by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Walters also appointed Chaya Raichik, an anti-LGBTQ+ activist who goes by Libs of Tik Tok online,  as a Library Media Advisor for the state  (even though she has no educational experience, doesn’t reside in Oklahoma, and has made posts that have led to bomb threats against students).

The University of Southern California has canceled appearances from outside speakers and honorees at next month's graduation ceremony following a wave of criticism over the school's decision to stop the valedictorian from giving a graduation speech.

The Los Angeles school announced on Monday that Asna Tabassum would not deliver her speech after the discussion about her selection took on "an alarming tenor" on social media.

"Given the highly publicized circumstances surrounding our main-stage commencement program, university leadership has decided it is best to release our outside speakers and honorees from attending this year’s ceremony," USC said in a Friday update . "It is important that our full attention be on our remarkable graduates."

The university said it will delay giving out honorary degrees at ceremonies, including commencement speaker Jon Chu, director of "Crazy Rich Asians." Honorary degrees were also set to go to tennis legend Billie Jean King, National Endowment for the Arts chair Maria Rosario Jackson and National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt.

The school did not name which commencement speakers are still scheduled to speak. Previously scheduled outside speakers include "Never Have I Ever" star Jaren Lewison for the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and Korean filmmaker Miky Lee for the School of Cinematic Arts.

The university did not respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

Provost cited security risks after social media outrage

USC's decision marks the first time the school has ever prevented its valedictorian from speaking at graduation.

Provost Andrew Guzman said officials were concerned by the social media outrage following the naming of Tabassum as USC's valedictorian. Critics complained about Tabassum's social media, which includes an Instagram bio that links to a pro-Palestine website, arguing that she spouted "anti-semitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric."

"The intensity of feelings, fueled by both social media and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, has grown to include many voices outside of USC and has escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement," Guzman said in a statement Monday. "This decision is not only necessary to maintain the safety of our campus and students, but is consistent with the fundamental legal obligation."

He said officials could not ignore that similar risks have previously led to harassment and violence at other campuses. He added that the school's Department of Public Safety and campus safety team are evaluating potential threats for the ceremony, which typically draws around 65,000 people.

Tabassum says USC abandoned her

Tabassum, a South Asian-American and Muslim who studies biomedical engineering and resistance to genocide, issued a statement after USC's decision.

"I am not surprised by those who attempt to propagate hatred. I am surprised that my own university—my home for four years—has abandoned me," Tabassum said in the statement, issued through the Council on American-Islamic Relations Los Angeles branch.

She said anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices led a "campaign of racist hatred" toward her and "an uncompromising belief in human rights for all."

Campus protest stands by Asna Tabassum

Students, faculty and pro-Palestinian activists rallied at the University of Southern California campus Thursday to protest the cancelation of Tabassum's speech.

Many held signs that read "Let Asna Speak" while chanting, "Let her speak!" Supporters voiced that Tabassum is their rightful valedictorian and that the school is silencing her.

"One of the most gifted girls I have ever met," student Kaiser Kuresi told CBS News . "This university is trying to silence her."

"This campus has been hostile to Muslim voices, Palestinian voices, people who are calling out the genocide happening," USC senior Maideh Orangi told the Los Angeles Times . "This is just another example of that."

The 2024 commencement ceremony remains scheduled for Friday, May 10.

LOS ANGELES — The University of Southern California further shook up its commencement plans Friday, announcing the cancellation of a keynote speech by filmmaker Jon M. Chu just days after making the controversial choice to disallow the student valedictorian from speaking .

The private university in Los Angeles on Monday said it was canceling valedictorian Asna Tabassum's speech at the May 10 ceremony because of safety concerns. Tabassum, who is Muslim, has expressed support for Palestinians in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, and university officials said the response to her selection as valedictorian had "taken on an alarming tenor." They did not cite any specific threats.

The university's decision was met with praise from pro-Israel organizations but condemnation from free speech groups and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Students and faculty marched across campus Thursday in silent protest of the university's decision.

Now, university officials say they are "redesigning" the entire commencement program.

"Given the highly publicized circumstances surrounding our main-stage commencement program, university leadership has decided it is best to release our outside speakers and honorees from attending this year's ceremony," the university said in an unsigned statement posted Friday. "We've been talking to this exceptional group and hope to confer these honorary degrees at a future commencement or other academic ceremonies."

Chu was slated to deliver the keynote address at the May 10 ceremony. He is a 2003 graduate of the university who has since directed films like "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Wicked," an adaptation for the Broadway musical set for release last this year.

More than 65,000 people are expected to gather on campus for commencement, including 19,000 graduates.

"Although this should have been a time of celebration for my family, friends, professors, and classmates, anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices have subjected me to a campaign of racist hatred because of my uncompromising belief in human rights for all," Tabassum said in a statement earlier this week.

The Israel-Hamas war has presented a challenge for colleges under pressure to preserve free speech and open debate, and campuses are expected to be further tested as commencement speeches get underway in the coming weeks.

At Columbia University on Thursday, New York police removed a pro-Palestinian protest encampment and arrested more than 100 demonstrators. Most of them were charged with trespassing at the Ivy League-institution.

Several students involved in the protest said they also were suspended from Columbia and nearby Barnard College. The school said it was still identifying students involved in the protest and added more suspensions would be forthcoming.

"Students have a right to free speech but do not have a right to violate university policies and disrupt learning on campus," said New York Mayor Eric Adams, who said the city was asked by university officials to remove the encampment.
