The School auditorium had been prepared for the occasion. It was decorated with flowers of paper. It looked very beautiful. The chief guest arrived on time and look his seat. He was welcomed with a bouquet of flowers presented by two nursery children.

The cultural show began with a welcome song and a player song. The first item was presented by the nursery and K.G. students. They were dressed up as flowers and looked very lovely. They danced all around the stage without making a single mistake. Everyone clapped loudly. There was a short Odissi dance price by a very talented girl of our school. There were some solo and group songs and dances after that.

Two Hindi and English skits were played too. The Hindi play was a comedy, while the English one was Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’. Both were appreciated very much. We also had a miming act and magic show presented by two boys.

All the parents and other guests enjoyed the whole evening very much. It was a well organised show. We felt very happy when we heard the loud clapping. The Chief guest came up on the stage and gave away some prizes. He praised our school and its students very much.

Our school principal gave a short history of the school and read out the annual report. She also gave a volt of thanks to the chief guest and all the other guests. Finally, the National Anthem was sung and the school Annual Day came to an end. We enjoyed it very much.

By 6.30 pm the celebrations were over and the guests departed, leaving the teachers and students to congratulate each other.

Our school celebrated its Annual Prize Distribution Function on 14th August this year. Teachers and students started preparing for it many days earlier.

The school was decorated tastefully. A stage was erected in the corner of the ground. It was beautifully decorated with flowers and coloured paper. A large seating arrangement was made. The Annual Report was then read by the Principal. Everybody gave a big hand for brilliant Higher Secondary results. He mentioned the trophy won by the players of our school. Names of meritorious students were mentioned.

Then the prizes were given away by the chief guest. The prizes were given to the students who had performed brilliantly in studies games and sports and in extracurricular activities of the school. The prize winners were looking extremely happy.

After distributing prizes, the chief guest gave a short speech He praised the school for its achievements. He promised to help the school in every possible manner. The secretary thanked the thief guest and other guests. A holiday was announced and the function came to end. Sweets were distributed to the students.

This function also gives students an opportunity to showcase their various talents and interact with their teachers in a more informal environment. From dance performances to plays and musical events to speeches, the school annual day is one day that is eagerly anticipated by children and parents alike, every year. This is also a day when achievers are felicitated for their accomplishments in the academic year.

Along with students and teachers, the principal also plays an important part in helping organize the annual day and ensuring its success.

We talk to Dr Srinivasa Raghavan, principal of Bala Vidya Mandir School in Chennai to know more about his role and the significance of the school annual day in a student's life.

Can you share some of the roles and responsibilities of a school principal?

A principal is the custodian of a school. In India, this role is both administrative and academic. This means that a principal must completely monitor the pedagogical processes taking place in the school. This includes the training and behavior of teachers along with the behavior and safety of students.

Moreover, a good principal does not just stick to her assigned roles and responsibilities but is also heavily invested in the students. This means that she considers how children must be brought up, how to keep up with the social and technological changes of modern life, and the impact of society on education. This way a principal can evaluate a broad number of factors, which would help her to come up with effective and beneficial school policies.

Tell us about some of the challenges you face as a principal every day...

The hardest part is maintaining human relationships. We are quite like politicians in this respect. We have to address a huge number of parents with diverse views. This often means that we can't satisfy everybody. So, we end up facing criticism regardless of what we choose to do. Sometimes, this criticism is very hurtful, especially when we do something good and people criticize it.

What do you think is the most rewarding part of being a school principal?

Children's love. Nothing else can beat this best reward for me. Even if the children don't realize it now, they might in five or ten years. I know this because some of them have even come back to tell me how much they cherished their school days and how thankful they are.

Most schools are preparing to host the annual day. What do you think is the importance of celebrating this event?

The school's annual day allows students to display their talents and build their confidence. Some schools have their best students in the front, and others have their average and below-average students in the limelight. This is something we practice in our school. I have seen students benefit a lot from these functions as they shed their inhibitions and perform on the stage. Not to mention that they have more motivation to work on their talents, knowing that they can share them with an audience.

This is also a way for the parents to be involved, as they can come and encourage the children on stage. And not just their own children, but also other children. However, this is missing these days, as many parents only show up for their own child's event and leave once it's done.

Do you think celebrating the annual day also helps keep our cultural traditions alive?

Annual Day on its own doesn't have the power to keep our cultural traditions alive. Instead, a school should continuously work on this. One way to do this, as we do in our school, is to have small programs frequently instead of just one huge event. Moreover, these small programs don't always need an audience of parents but can also be for an audience of other students. In fact, it's important to have events just for a student audience.

Because, if a school has only one big event, like the annual day, then all the students end up being involved and don't get an opportunity to appreciate the talents of their fellow students. This is an unfortunate situation, as the amount of encouragement performers can draw from the appreciation of their peers is significant.

After the annual day is over, it's time to prepare for the final exams. And, for some, it's time for the dreaded board exams. What tips do you have for students?

A common issue is that most students only start preparing for the board exams toward the end of their academic sessions. Instead, they should prepare well in advance. This would allow them enough time to absorb the study material and practice the previous year's question papers. Having so much preparation can help them become more confident for the actual exams, which is important.

Indeed! The school's annual day is the culmination of the school's academic year. It's a time for celebration and recognition of the students as well as the school's achievements. April 3rd, 2022: On March 22nd, our college celebrated its annual day with great grandeur. It is the 50th annual day that our college celebrated in the Madhusudan Auditorium Hall. All the students along with their guardians were invited to this ceremony. The celebration started at around 11 am. with a beautiful cake. Then the principal of our college delivered her mesmerizing speech.

In her speech, she pointed out, the significance of the college in the field of education in Bengal. She mentioned the history of the college and how this annual day celebration started. After her speech, the annual prize distribution ceremony took place. Prizes were distributed in various fields like academics, sports, national achievements, cultural achievements, best leadership skills, etc.

After the prize distribution ceremony got over, cultural programs started. Various singing and dancing performance was staged by both the students and faculties. The prime attraction was a drama that was staged by 15 alumni of the college. Many other alumni took part in the program as well. After the drama, the annual day celebration came to an end. CELEBRATION WENT WRONG ON THE ANNUAL DAY AT RAHARA BHABANATH GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

Rahara; July 12th, 2022: A disastrous incident has taken place during the annual day celebration of Rahara Bhabanath Girls’ High School. The annual day celebration was scheduled for July 12th, in the school auditorium like all other years. The program started around 10 in the morning, as per the schedule. Various kinds of programs were supposed to be taken place after the initial prize distribution ceremony. But during the initial ceremony, a massive fire broke out in the auditorium.

The installed water sprinklers didn’t start working automatically. But with the help of an emergency fire alarm system, the fire brigade was immediately informed and 3 engines of fire brigades came into immediate action. After 2-3 hours of continuous effort, the fire came under control. Fortunately, nobody was killed in this massive accident. Around 21 students along with teachers were injured.

They were admitted to the nearby district hospital. The local police station is investigating the matter very closely. From the primary investigation, a short circuit is suspected responsible for this accident. As per the management authority, for more than the last 25 years, the annual day has been organised in the same hall, and everything was properly checked before the program. They had no clue that such a devastating incident could occur. This incident will affect the overall reputation of the school, the teacher-in-charge said.

January 10th, 2022: Recently, on January 2nd, our Seth Jagatlal College celebrated its 150th foundation day. It was a massive ceremony organized on the college premises. All the students along with many notable alumni were invited to take part in the program. The celebration started at around 11:30 in the morning with a fascinating speech by the head of the management committee.

In that speech, the glorious history of the institution was mentioned multiple times. He described how the college has a severe contribution to the country’s freedom movement. We decided to deviate this day to serve the needy and help the poor, the principal said to us. The day was full of different initiatives and that’s why several teams of students were created and assigned particular projects.

A group of students along with teachers were assigned the task to distribute clothes among the needy people from the nearby slum. Along with it, a literacy campaign was also launched to literate the street children. As per the team leader, this campaign will be continued throughout the month. After all this, the students came back to the school premises and attended an ethics class.

Around 11:30 am. after the class, all the students took part in a tree plantation program. As per the report, around 1000 trees were planted around the school area and each student had to take responsibility for looking after at least two trees. After the tree plantation program was over, the student cleaned the school premises under the banner of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. The day ended with a beautiful prize distribution ceremony as per the achievements of students in various fields.

Getting Dressed for the ‘Muslim Met Gala’

Washington Square Park is known for its lively atmosphere and eclectic characters. That was no different on Wednesday, when hundreds of Muslims filled the park to attend a morning prayer gathering for Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

People celebrate Eid by getting dressed to the nines, which is why some jokingly refer to it as the Muslim Met Gala. Many came to Washington Square Park wearing colorful traditional garments like galabeyas, grand boubous, salwar kameez, thobes, kurtas and abayas, some of which were accessorized with opulent jewels or swipes of dark kajal eyeliner. Others chose more casual clothes — like the comic Ramy Youssef , who wore a hoodie and a green baseball cap.

On the morning of Eid, there are many large prayer gatherings throughout New York — in mosques, at high school football fields, on blocked-off streets. The prayer at the Lower Manhattan park, which took place beneath its Roman arch, is known for drawing a diverse crowd representative of the two billion Muslims globally. It is also known to attract notable people like Mr. Youssef as well as the comic Hasan Minhaj and the MSNBC anchor Ayman Mohyeldin , both of whom also attended.

The annual Eid al-Fitr gathering at Washington Square Park was started more than 10 years ago by leaders of the Islamic Center at N.Y.U. “We were just trying to conceptualize space that could fit our growing numbers and be a memorable experience,” said the center’s director, Imam Khalid Latif, who led this year’s prayer before giving a khutbah, or sermon.

“It can be very affirming knowing that in a city as large as New York, you’re not by yourself, you’re not alone,” Mr. Khalid added. “And it helps people also around us who we share space with, who are our neighbors, to know that we’re Muslim, and we are here as well.”

The prayer gathering’s first attendees started arriving at 7:30 a.m. Many quickly spotted friends and relatives, greeting them with cries of, “Eid mubarak,” or “blessed Eid,” as they embraced. By 9:15 a.m., people began making their way to the homes of loved ones, an Eid tradition known as house hopping that involves serving lots of food.

During the gathering, The New York Times spoke to attendees about their outfits, their favorite Eid memories and what inspired them to start the holiday at Washington Square Park.

How did Eid inspire your outfit? I was inspired by God. God said it was going to be cloudy today. So I had to come out looking like the sun. That’s why I have on gold — I had to come and shine.

Why did you come to this gathering? It is so spiritually moving to be with such a diverse group here at the iconic Washington Square park. To listen to Imam Khalid Latif’s khutbah, and just see the diversity in the community, is so touching and amazing.

Tell me about your outfit. Eid is the one time where we put on our best, most stylish clothes. It’s a day to flex a little bit. The whole family is matching: We’re all wearing tones of black and white with embroidery.

How did Eid inspire your outfits?

ZEINAB BAKILLAH I’m wearing a traditional Tunisian outfit. We just dress up a little bit more on this holiday. I chose something that’s more traditional to embrace our culture.

ABDERRAHMAN BAKILLAH I’d say the same thing with the galabeya. We’re half Moroccan, half Tunisian.

EMNA BAKILLAH This dress belongs to my mom, who passed away five years ago. Every year on Eid, I try to wear something of hers. Every Eid, she was really good about getting the family all together.

NARMEEN CHOUDHURY When I was in Bangladesh last summer, I thought about the upcoming Eid, because it’s so difficult sometimes to find outfits here in New York. I always think about something that’s reflective of our culture. And modesty, obviously, for when you’re praying.

What’s your favorite Eid memory?

ABDUL QUADIR CHOUDHURY I moved here in 1973. That Eid, we did the prayer in Manhattan; small, not that many Muslims. Now, so many Eid prayers.

Tell me about your outfit. My mum got it for me, and Eid is all about family. I’m missing my mum today — she’s in Qatar. On the way here, on the train, I sat next to a girl who was clearly dressed for Eid as well. I said “Eid mubarak,” and we ended up walking over here together. That’s the beautiful thing about celebrating this day, is being around other people who also celebrate.

What’s your favorite Eid fashion memory? Probably this one: This is the first time that I tried to add my own touch to my outfit by bringing my own layering and fashion into it as well.

How did Eid inspire your outfit? This is actually a gift from my brother. This is a Moroccan thobe. He bought it a couple of months ago, but it’s inspired me to show out and embrace my culture.

What does this gathering mean to you? It means everything to me. It showcases a community that we’re still building. You can see bystanders walking by and saying: “Hey, this something that’s cool. I should look into this, probably.” So I think it just showcases that we’re not afraid to take pride in our religion.

Tell me about your outfit. So last night I actually went to Jackson Heights because there’s always a big festival there. I got this kurta there. I got the kajal for today specifically. I don’t usually do a lot of makeup or anything like that. So this is kind of like the day that I get a little bit more fun with it. I used to wrap my head a lot back in the day. But I haven’t done it in a while.

What’s your favorite Eid memory? I was actually in Nazareth for Eid in 2019. And it was so beautiful. There were lights everywhere and children playing with toys.
