The objective of the thorough mixing of aggregates, cement, and water is to ensure that the cement-water paste completely covers the surface of the aggregates. All the raw materials including water are collected in a concrete mixer, which is rotated for about 1 ½ minutes.

c) Compacting

The purpose of compacting is to fill all air pockets with concrete as a whole without the movement of free water through the concrete. Excessive compaction would result in the formation of water pockets or layers with higher water content and poor quality of the product.

Hollow blocks removed from the mold are protected until they are sufficiently hardened to permit handling without damage. This may take about 24 hours in a shelter away from the sun and winds. The hollow blocks thus hardened are cured in a curing yard to permit complete moisturization for at least 21 days.

Concrete shrinks slightly with the loss of moisture. It is, therefore, essential that after curing is over, the blocks should be allowed to dry out gradually. You can dry it out normally in shade or you can use drying machines.

Getting Started The great thing about this business is that it can be very profitable. The problem is that type of scale requires a bit of capital: space (both for manufacturing and storage), labour, raw materials, machinery, delivery vehicles, site security etc. Yes it can be started small but then you must maybe start with a niche block like interlocking blocks where competition is less and profit is higher per block.

Business Model This business makes and sells concrete blocks, usually to the building industry. This product is often made using older, less expensive manual methods compared to the modern mechanised way that clay bricks are manufactured.

As you can see you need a concrete block making machine, a cement mixer and lots of space, but you can start smaller with moulds, and mix the concrete manually.

Where you start depends on how much capital you have. If you have the capital you can buy a machine with built in raw material feeder, pan/cement/concrete mixer and conveyor belt. There is also a somewhat in between way: buy the block making machine and concrete mixer separately, that should be your minimum goal. As starting manually is really hard, but if there is no other way then you have to do just that.

Target Market These blocks are mainly used in residential and small business building. It is particularly popular in lower income areas. You will essentially have two types of clients: 1) Small construction companies building private houses. 2) Ordinary DIY people who will use it for their own needs (building renovation etc.).

The block making machine produces house building blocks. The blocks come in various sizes to meet the market demand. The concrete mix can be made from 100% recycled concrete and with normal quarried aggregates. The block making machine can produce between 15,000 and 20,000 blocks a day.

In line with government initiatives to phase out clay bricks by FY2024-2025, the hollow block industry is experiencing a massive boost in adoption. This policy shift is driving both construction companies and individuals to choose hollow blocks over traditional clay bricks.

Amid a surging demand for environmentally-sustainable building materials and as an alternative to traditional bricks, hollow concrete blocks have emerged as a game-changer, gaining traction for their cost-effectiveness, durability, and green credentials. 

With a steady rise in demand, major manufacturers are now ramping up their production capacities, reshaping the industry landscape.

Since the introduction of environmentally sustainable blocks in 1998 by Concord, the market has experienced an exponential growth in its size. The sector is currently valued at Tk120 crore, hosting a constellation of 30-35 companies, including industry stalwarts like Mir Group and Concord Group.

In response to the escalating demand for hollow blocks, companies are bolstering their manufacturing capabilities. By expanding their factories and incorporating cutting-edge German machinery, the industry leaders are positioning themselves to capture the burgeoning market demand.

Chief Marketing Officer of Concord Group, Anup Kumar Sarker, highlights the company's commitment to innovation. 

"Our capacity was to produce 97,600 blocks per 8 hours. With new German machines, we now produce an additional 74,000 pieces in the same timeframe," he said. 

Concord Group continues to maintain its leading market share, currently commanding a 60% stake.

Meanwhile, Mir Concrete Products, sister concern of Mir Group, that holds over 30% market share, recently secured a Tk10 crore loan from United Finance under the "Environment Friendly Brick Production" refinancing scheme. 

This capital infusion is aimed at expanding their production capacity from 30,000 units per day at present in their Narayanganj factory and meeting the ever-growing client demand. 

Naba E Zaheer, managing director of Mir Group, emphasised their dedication to harmonising industrial growth with ecological stewardship, aligned with the vision of a Smart and Sustainable Bangladesh.

"Also, we have plans to set up another mega concrete block factory in Khulna in the near future," he said. 

Beyond the financial investments, these companies are also committed to contributing to a greener future. 

"We have always recognised the importance of reducing our carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices", said Zaheer, adding, "Our journey, backed by the support of United Finance, will redefine industry standards and ensure a sustainable future." 

Moreover, industry players are not just focused on production but are also actively involved in spreading awareness about the ecological advantages of hollow blocks. 

The benefits of hollow blocks extend beyond the ecological sphere. These blocks are not only cost-effective but also durable, boasting earthquake, heat, and salinity resistance, along with lower water absorption, according to Nafizur Rahman, principal research officer of the Housing and Building Research Institute (HBRI). 

The durability of hollow blocks, coupled with their reduced weight compared to conventional bricks, makes them an attractive choice for construction projects of varying scales, he opined.

Highlighting the economic advantages of hollow blocks, Md Enamul Haque, factory manager of Green Block in Chattogram, said, "The weight of a 400x200mm block is 16 kg. Nine ordinary bricks are needed to fill the same amount of space, which would be 27kg. On the other hand, the price of a block is Tk60 while the price of nine bricks is around Tk90."

The skies over Israel lit up on Saturday night as its Iron Dome shot down hundreds of missiles and drones launched by Iran.

The assault was retaliation for Israel's deadly strike on Iran's consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus. It marked the first time that Iran had carried out attacks on Israel from Iranian territory.

Israel said it shot down 99% of the drones, cruise, and ballistic missiles that headed its way. In doing so, it received help from unlikely sources: its Arab neighbors.

Jordan, which has been a fierce critic of Israel's campaign in Gaza, said it intercepted projectiles fired by Iran that entered its airspace. It also appeared to open up its airspace to Israeli and US fighter jets.

Samih al-Maaytah, Jordan's former information minister, defended the move on Sunday. "Jordan's duty is to protect its lands and citizens," he said. "What Jordan did yesterday was to simply protect its airspace."

Jordan may have complicated motivations for backing Israel. As Deutsche Welle wrote on Sunday, the country shares a border with Israel and often works with Israeli authorities.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have publicly called for peace in the region. But The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, said Iran tipped off several Gulf states about the timing and nature of the attack it was planning. They then passed the information to the US, Israel's key international ally.

"Arab countries quietly passed along intelligence about Tehran's attack plans, opened their airspace to warplanes, shared radar tracking information or, in some cases, supplied their own forces to help," the Journal reported, citing the sources.

This may jeopardize Saudi attempts to improve relations with Iran. In March, Saudi Arabia and Iran restored ties with help from China, agreeing to reopen embassies in their respective capitals.

Saudi Arabia is still interested in possibly normalizing diplomatic relations with Israel. One reason, The New York Times reported , is that it's hoping for a US security guarantee in case it's ever attacked by Iran.

Yasmine Farouk, a nonresident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told the Times that many Arab states envied the success of Israel's Iron Dome defense system, which was constructed with US support.

"What the Western countries under US leadership have done to protect Israel yesterday is exactly what Saudi Arabia wants for itself," said Farouk.

Arab countries' fears about Iranian aggression was a key factor underpinning the Abraham Accords — the agreement to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel and some Arab states brokered by the Trump administration.

The deal, which the UAE and Bahrain in the Gulf region agreed to, put aside the issue of Palestinian statehood that has long divided Israel and its neighbors and promised increased US support for Arab countries against potential Iranian attacks.

The October 7 terrorist attacks, which killed around 1,200 Israeli, abruptly halted that process. Jordan and Saudi Arabia have been among the leading voices condemning Israel's subsequent campaign in Gaza, where more than 33,000 people have been killed.

However, per various reports, Saudi Arabia and other Arab states are willing to continue discussions with Israel once fighting in Gaza has abated.

Giorgio Cafiero, the CEO of Gulf State Analytics, told Business Insider it could be risky for Arab states to be seen as coming to Israel's aid.

"There is now much anger toward Jordan on the part of many in the wider Arab-Islamic world who see Amman serving Israel and the US's interests more than six months into Israel's annihilatory campaign in Gaza which Arab governments like Jordan's have only stood against in rhetoric, not concrete action," he said.

As the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, Arab states face a tough choice between their security priorities and addressing public anger over Gaza.

Saudi Arabia has said that normalization with Israel must include a realistic path to Palestinian statehood. That request is unlikely to be met by Israel's current government.
