About this program.

The 4-year undergraduate Bachelor of Music (BM) degree provides extensive applied training, along with comprehensive instruction in music theory and history, and an introduction to the liberal arts disciplines.

The Music Division accepts a total of approximately 150 classical instrumentalists and vocalists, and approximately 7 to 9 jazz instrumentalists, into the BM program every year.

Eligibility

In order to be admitted as a Bachelor of Music student, you must have:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent by the time you enroll
  • Prior artistic training
  • English language fluency

If you apply to this degree program and are denied admission, you can apply again. After two unsuccessful attempts, you are no longer eligible to apply.

Academic Requirements

In most cases, the Juilliard School requires no specific courses, GPAs, standardized test scores, or class rankings for entry to this program. 

However, we will carefully evaluate your academic record and required essay to make sure you have the scholastic competence necessary to succeed in college-level coursework. 

There are specific requirements for:

  • Homeschooled applicants
  • Applicants for whom English is not their native language

Double Majors

Double majors are very rare at Juilliard, due to the strenuous nature of our performance-based curriculum.

Most double majors require an additional year of study to complete all requirements, and there is an additional cost above tuition that is applicable each year.

If you are considering a double major, you must apply, audition, and be admitted to each major before formally requesting approval to study both majors. The Registrar's Office will review the request to determine the feasibility of combining the two chosen majors.

Application Timeline

Applications to the College Division open on September 1 each year for enrollment the following fall.  Please note the various deadlines for individual materials below.

Application Results

You will receive notification of your admission status (admit, wait list, or deny) through your application status page no later than April 1, if all required application materials have been received.

Application Fee & Waivers

Application fee.

The $110 application fee is nonrefundable and must be paid through your application status page upon submission of your application. Your application is not considered complete until the fee has been received.

Fee Waivers

The inability to pay a college application fee should not be a barrier to applying to The Juilliard School. We offer need-based fee waivers through the process described here, and in the application.

First-time College Students

Fee waiver requests are available for first-time college students who demonstrate significant financial need by uploading one of the following to the application:

  • An official SAT  or ACT fee waiver form signed by a high school counselor OR
  • An official NACAC fee waiver form signed by a high school counselor OR
  • You are enrolled in or eligible to participate in the Federal Free or Reduced Price Lunch program (FRPL).
  • Your annual family income falls within the income eligibility guidelines set by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.
  • You are enrolled in a federal, state, or local program that aids students from low-income families (e.g., TRIO programs such as Upward Bound).
  • Your family receives public assistance.
  • You live in federally subsidized public housing, a foster home, or are homeless.
  • You are a ward of the state or an orphan.

If you are unable to provide one of the above documents, you may provide the following:

  • A letter from someone other than you (the applicant) that addresses your financial situation

All documentation must be in English. Original documents with translation are acceptable.

  • Transfer Students

Fee waiver requests are available for undergraduate transfer students who demonstrate significant financial need by uploading of one of the following to the application:

  • If you are independent, a copy of your most recent tax form filed OR
  • A letter on school stationery from your current college's Financial Aid Office stating that you have financial need of a fee waiver
  • A personal letter describing your financial situation

Fee waiver requests will be evaluated after you have submitted a complete application. If you are requesting a fee waiver, please submit your application (including fee waiver documentation) but do  not  pay the application fee.

How to Upload

Fee waiver documentation (translated into English if not originally in that language) must be uploaded directly within the online application and submitted by the appropriate deadline . Documents must be in either .doc or .pdf format. (Convert your file to another format if you have scanned your document as a jpg.)

Fee waiver requests are processed on an ongoing basis. You will receive an email with the results of your request as soon as it is processed. Note that we have a heavy volume of requests to process at the deadline, so you may not receive your results until after the deadline has passed. This does not disqualify your application. Do not pay the application fee if your waiver request is still pending.

Your application status page will show an application fee payment due until your request is approved. If you are notified that your request for an application fee waiver is denied, you will be required to pay the application fee. Your application is not considered complete until the fee has been received. If your fee waiver request is processed after the deadline, and is denied, you will still have a grace period in which to pay the fee.

Your Resume

An artistic resume must be uploaded as part of the online application. The purpose of submitting a résumé is to provide the Admissions Committee with a document that quickly sums up your background and accomplishments. The résumé should contain lists, not full prose paragraphs such as in a program bio. The elements to include in your résumé are as follows: 

  • Your name and major (violin, jazz trumpet, soprano, etc.)
  • Your contact information (including address, phone, and email)
  • Education: Where you studied, degree or diploma earned (or to be earned)
  • Teachers: Particularly for classical instrumentalists and vocalists, listing your most recent teachers and the dates when you studied with them is important information for the Committee
  • Master classes where you performed: List teacher and date (for example, June 2020)
  • Ensemble experience: Youth orchestras, choirs, jazz bands, etc.
  • Competitions and awards: Include dates
  • Performances: If including orchestral performances, only include those if you were the soloist; otherwise list recitals and chamber music performances
  • Other experience: If you have done volunteer work, held a job, etc., those can be listed here  

You do not have to use these exact categories in this exact order. Use what is logical for your background, but make sure to put your name at the top of the document, and include your education and your teachers. DO NOT SUBMIT A PROGRAM BIO. It is not useful for purposes of applying to Juilliard.

Your Essay(s)

A written essay is one of Juilliard’s application requirements. Our Admissions Committee uses your essay(s) to learn more about you as an individual, and to gain a sense of who you are beyond your application, transcript, and audition. Your essay helps the Admissions Committee understand how your past experiences have informed your life as a musician, and how Juilliard fits into your pursuit of a career in music.

Essays are evaluated on the way you express your ideas, the written flow of your thoughts, and your use of language (including grammar and mechanics). Using outside help to write your essay—whether generative AI, including tools such as Google Bard and ChatGPT, or help from another person—undermines the ability of the Admissions Committee to evaluate your potential for success at Juilliard. Submission of your essay confirms that the writing was produced by you, with no assistance from another person or electronic resource.

Essay Requirements

  • 1–2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font
  • written in English (not translated from another language)
  • must be your own original work
  • submitted within the online application

Tips for Writing Your Essay

  • Take time to think about what you would say to the Admissions Committee about your experiences and goals as a musician.
  • Get the ideas down in a rough draft, and then speak them out loud.
  • Edit your rough draft so that it is clear, and expresses your thoughts. Avoid bland, general statements about being a musician.
  • Have a friend read the essay to give you feedback on whether it genuinely sounds like you.
  • Review the final draft for grammatical and spelling errors. (Remember that “Juilliard” is spelled with two “I”s: JUI-LLI-ARD.)
  • Attach your essay to your application.
  • Remember that AI may be a shortcut, but in the end, it does not represent your own thoughts. If you are seeking an education at The Juilliard School, self-examination and honesty are qualities that will serve your growth.

Essay Topic

  • Please write about why you have chosen to become a musician and what motivates you to continue to pursue music at the collegiate/professional level. Please also elaborate specifically on why you are applying to Juilliard, and how conservatory training will support your future goals.

Additional Essay Requirements

Additional essays are required in each of the following circumstances:

  • Formerly enrolled Juilliard students
  • Currently enrolled Juilliard students

Optional Essay

Should you have a personal or academic circumstance to share that you feel can provide context for a particular point on your resume - for example, a gap year, unusually low grades in a semester or year, etc. - you have the option to submit an additional short essay.

Your Introduction Video

A one-minute video uploaded to the application in which you record yourself giving the following information:

  • Your major (i.e. flute, composition, organ). Voice applicants: please include your voice type
  • Your current music teacher
  • Your current school and grade level
  • One fact that you want the Admissions Committee to know about you that they cannot learn from your application materials AND
  • Tell us about one piece of music that excites you and why.

To record your video, navigate to the "Music Introduction Video" tab in your application. There you will find instructions for starting the recording. Because the video will be recorded directly from the application, not uploaded as a video file, we recommend allowing yourself ample time to prepare and test your recording in the application module. You can record and save your video at any time before submitting your application, and can delete and re-record your video as needed prior to submission. You will need to use a computer (any type) or cell phone (Android only) with a webcam and a browser that supports media recording (Chrome and Firefox). At this time, video recording is not supported on iPhones or iPads. If you have any trouble with the video recording module, please call or email the Office of Admissions.

Your Transcripts

Transcripts are an important component of the decision process. They help us determine if you have sufficient scholastic competence to succeed in coursework at the level for which you are applying. The transcript requirement will be placed on your checklist with a clear deadline at an appropriate point in the application process. DO NOT SEND YOUR TRANSCRIPT UNTIL YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT IT.  

Official versus Unofficial Transcripts 

  • To avoid the possibility of fraudulent transcripts, we DO NOT accept transcripts sent via email. 
  • An official transcript must show courses taken and grades earned. 
  • Because the transcript did not come from your school, it is insufficient for admission and does not fulfill the checklist requirement. 

How Do I Send Juilliard My Official Transcript?

  • If you are submitting a high school transcript, ask your school guidance counselor to send it to us. 
  • In the U.S., many high schools use secure electronic sending services such as Naviance, Parchment, eSCRIP-SAFE, or other system. 
  • Schools outside the U.S. typically send a hard copy of the official transcript to Juilliard via regular or express mail. 
  • If you are a homeschooled student in any country, ask your homeschool administrator (usually your parent) to send a transcript to us. See the Additional Requirements- Homeschool Applicants  section for more information on what a homeschool transcript should contain. 
  • If you are a college student, follow the process outlined by your registrar to request that a transcript be sent to Juilliard.

  • A paper record of your academic progress, including grades earned, is an acceptable alternative to an electronic transcript if it is sent in a sealed envelope directly from the issuing institution(s) to the Juilliard Office of Admissions (mailing address below). 

Transcript Requirements for Students Studying in the US

  • If your transcript is not in English, we require the transcript in its original language as well as a certified translation. 
  • Your official transcript(s) must show all prior and current coursework, which must be equivalent or similar to a US high school curriculum.

Your Recommendations

In your application you will be required to identify two individuals who will provide your recommendations:

Academic Recommendation

  • A recommendation from a high school academic teacher, preferably in English, history, or other language arts coursework (transfer applicants may provide a recommendation from a college professor)
  • The recommendation should help us to gain insight into your abilities in English and acknowledge your speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension abilities
  • The Admissions Committee considers this a critical component of your application

Home-schooled applicants should submit a recommendation from someone other than a parent who can address the issues listed above. In addition, this recommendation should address social maturity and ability to integrate well with other students and colleagues.

Artistic Recommendation

  • A recommendation from a teacher, conductor, coach, or artistic mentor
  • In addition to addressing your talent and accomplishment, the recommendation should also discuss the following individual characteristics that indicate potential for success in the field: perseverance, dedication, collegiality, and leadership

These recommendations themselves are not due until later in the application timeline . Recommenders will receive an email with a link to securely upload their letters to our application system. We will only accept recommendations received through our application system.

Your Teacher Preferences

A key element of your study at Juilliard is your major teacher assignment. Music students receive 15 one-hour lessons per semester with a Juilliard studio faculty member.

How to Indicate Your Preferences

  • You are required to submit your teacher preferences through the online application
  • If your preferences change, you can update your selections through your application status page

How Your Preferences are Used

  • Your teacher preferences are confidential and do not affect admissions decisions. Studio faculty are not advised of teacher preference selections until after admission decisions are finalized by the committee
  • We aim to confirm studio assignments with notification of admission
  • If admitted, your teacher assignment will be based on your preferences to the greatest extent possible. No teacher assignment can be made without a documented request for a specific teacher

Researching Teachers

If you are not familiar with our faculty, we strongly recommend researching the teachers in your major prior to the application deadline , as follows:

  • Review the teachers’ online bios in our directory and listen to recordings of each artist
  • Ask your current teacher(s) for recommendations
  • Consult with friends who may have studied with them
  • Optional:  Set up a meeting or lesson with the teacher(s). Although not all faculty are available to meet with applicants due to their teaching and performing commitments, you may  use this form  to request contact information for up to four teachers. Scheduling the meeting and payment of any lesson or meeting fee is your responsibility.

Prescreening

Prescreening type.

You are required to upload your files in a Video format. Acceptable file types include:

  • .3g2, .3gp, .avi, .m2v, .m4v, .mkv, .mov, .mpeg, .mpg, .mp4, .mxf, .webm, .wmv

PLEASE NOTE: Some .mov files use a codec which is not supported by the application. We recommend that .mov files be converted to another accepted format to avoid uploading difficulties.

We support media files as large as 5GB, but please be advised that larger files will take longer to upload from your Internet connection and may stall if you are on a wireless connection or one that cannot sustain a connection for the necessary period of time. 

Prescreening Requirements

Your major is required to submit prescreening recordings within the online application by the appropriate deadline .

  • Upload and arrange your recordings so that the file that represents your best work is first.
  • Individual movements or excerpts should be uploaded as separate digital files.
  • Clearly label each of the uploaded files with the name of the composer and work/movement.
  • Complete your uploads well in advance of the appropriate deadline, as upload times vary depending on file size and internet signal strength.
  • Insufficient or incomplete audition repertoire may affect consideration for admission.
  • Where specific works are required, substitutions are not allowed.
  • Please note that audition requirements which state a complete piece or work are indicating all movements must be prepared.
  • Unless otherwise specified in the prescreening requirements listed below, all works written with accompaniment must be accompanied for your recording.
  • Please note that submitted prescreening recordings do not need to be filmed in a particular setting. Videos filmed in a practice room, a living room, a concert hall, a recording studio, or any other setting may be submitted. 
  • Recordings must be genuinely performed by you. Composition applicants: live recordings of your works may include others.
  • Recordings must not be edited, nor should any effects such as “reverb” be added.
  • Play back and check your entire recording for any distortion or excessive “buzz”.  
  • If accompaniment is required, ensure that it does not drown out your playing.
  • Review your recordings before uploading to ensure that they are of good quality and represent your best work to date.

You will be notified as to whether or not you have passed the prescreening round by the date on the application timeline . Please note that prescreening materials become the property of The Juilliard School and will not be returned. We encourage you to keep copies for your records.

Prescreening Repertoire

  • The quality of your prescreening recording may significantly affect the determination of the prescreening jury. Avoid distortion of the voice, excessive “buzz,” and lack of balance between the piano accompaniment and the voice. Review your prescreening recordings before uploading to ensure that they are of good quality and represent your best work to date.
  • Prescreening repertoire selections must show contrast in musical styles, tempos, and languages.
  • An Italian art song or aria from 18th century or before
  • An art song in English (not a translation)
  • A third selection in any language. Please note: An aria from an opera or oratorio is welcome, though not required.
  • If English is not your native speaking language, please prepare an additional song in your native language.

English Language Proficiency

Requirement

The ability to speak, read, and understand English fluently is an important factor in admissions decisions. You are required to show proof of English language proficiency by the  application deadline  if your native language is not English, regardless of citizenship. The Juilliard School defines native language as the language first spoken as a child and the primary language spoken at home.  

Exemption   You may be exempt from the requirement to provide proof of English language proficiency if you meet certain criteria. Exemptions are determined by your answers to questions on the application form. To qualify for an exemption, you must: 

  • Have attended school(s) on a full-time basis where instruction was entirely in English for a TOTAL of SEVEN of the past TEN years. Qualifying schools include primary, secondary, and undergraduate institutions. 

An exemption to provide a test score as proof of English language proficiency is granted automatically if  you meet the aforementioned criteria.  Applicants who are exempt from providing a test score also are exempt from the ELP interview requirement.

English Language Proficiency Assessment Criteria

We assess your English language abilities using the following criteria:

  • The results of a standardized English language proficiency test
  • An online interview with staff from our English language office
  • Your previous academic record

Note that your test score alone is not sufficient for admission; you must still meet our artistic and academic standards .

Test Scores

You must submit one of the following test types to document your current level of English language proficiency.  If your score falls below the minimum scores listed here, you should carefully consider whether to continue the application and audition process. We reserve the right to deny an audition based on scores that fall considerably below our minimum.

The official test results must be sent directly from the testing company and received by the Office of Admissions by the appropriate deadline .  Official test results must be on file before a decision of admit or waitlist can be released.

Interview Requirement

  • Any applicant with a test score of  94 TOEFL and below (or the equivalent score for other accepted tests) is required to interview with Juilliard’s Director of ESL in order to demonstrate fluency in the English language .
  • Applicants who are exempt from the test score requirement also are exempt from the interview requirement.
  • The Office of Admissions will contact applicants to schedule required interviews.

Transfer Applicants

Definition You are considered a transfer applicant if both of the following are true:

  • You have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent AND
  • You have attended at least one semester of full-time college study

Transcript Requirement

  • You are required to submit your high school transcript if you have completed fewer than two full-time semesters of post-secondary study
  • You are required to submit a transcript showing prior and current coursework from all post-secondary institutions attended

Essay Requirement You must submit an essay explaining your decision to transfer from your current institution, in addition to the other required essays.

Program Length and Transfer Credits

  • You are required to study at Juilliard for a minimum of three years
  • Total program length is determined after enrollment by evaluation of your transcript(s) and the results of placement exams
  • You are required to take a minimum of 12 liberal arts credits at Juilliard
  • Additional credits from liberal arts courses taken at other accredited post-secondary institutions may be transferred at the discretion of the Registrar; courses with a grade lower than C or its equivalent are not eligible for transfer
  • AP credits are not accepted

Homeschool Applicants

Questions within the Online Application As a homeschooled student, you will have to respond to the following questions within the online application :

  • What factors led to your decision to home school?
  • What relationship (formal or informal) exists between your home school and your state (or provincial) department of education?
  • Will the state recognize you as a high school graduate?

Transcript Requirements

Regardless of format, your homeschool documentation must be received by the stated deadline once the requirement is added to your checklist, and must include:

  • All courses taken, including those in progress, and the academic year and semester in which each was taken
  • Assessment of performance (letter grades, percentages, portfolio commentary, etc.) and an explanation of any applicable grading scales
  • Evidence of official recognition by the school district and/or state department of education
  • If you attended a high school for any period of time, you must submit official high school transcripts of any/all high school work

Essay As a formerly enrolled Juilliard student, you are required to submit an additional essay explaining your motivation for resuming your studies or applying to another major at Juilliard. You may choose to address academic, artistic, or professional goals that you believe could be accomplished by returning.

  • You are required to provide official transcripts from all institutions attended after Juilliard
  • Transcripts are already on file from your time at Juilliard and do not need to be submitted

Proof of English Language Proficiency As a formerly enrolled Juilliard student, you do not need to submit proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, ITP Plus).

Auditioning for Juilliard

Audition repertoire guidelines and resources.

A dedicated group of studio faculty chairs and other leaders in The Music Division joined together to create  Music by Black Composers: An Introductory Resource , a document that seeks to expand knowledge and build a more inclusive approach to repertoire. Repertoire and pedagogical choices can often grow out of habit and a narrowness of knowledge, shaped by a history of exclusion and diminished voices. In the Music Division, we are taking important steps to broaden our knowledge by creating a faculty-researched list of works by Black composers to embrace and work toward a more representative world of classical music.  When you have an elective choice, we encourage you to include a work in your audition repertoire by a composer from historically underrepresented  gender, racial, ethnic, and cultural heritages.

As part of the online application, you are required to submit your proposed audition repertoire for review and approval. Should you need to update your repertoire after you submit your online application, you can do so by submitting a form on your  application status page .

  • Audition requirements which state a complete piece or work are indicating all movements must be prepared

You should first consult with your private teacher to determine the suitability of your proposed repertoire. If there is any concern regarding the appropriateness of a particular piece,  submit your questions through this form . 

Audition Scheduling

After successfully passing the prescreening portion of the audition process, you will receive an invitation to attend an in-person audition. 

Auditions are scheduled based on a combination of the following:

  • Your ordered teacher preferences (if applicable)
  • Your audition day request (in cases of multiple audition days)

Important things to know about your audition:

  • You will receive an email confirming your audition date and time at least one month before your audition
  • Auditions take place only at The Juilliard School in New York City. Audition day details, including practice room availability, will be sent prior to your audition
  • Video auditions are not accepted 

Audition Repertoire

Fall 2024 Auditions

Music auditions at The Juilliard School are held in person on our New York City campus; limited funds are available for need-based travel grants. All applicants invited to audition are expected to attend on their scheduled date and time, and are expected to have the entire audition repertoire prepared. While faculty may not hear entire works, they may ask you to perform any part of a required work.

Audition Repertoire 

  • Faculty may ask applicants to sing several scales to check vocal range.
  • All compositions must be performed from memory.
  • Callbacks consist of a group warm-up (physical, not vocal) and an individual coaching session where diction, acting, and movement are evaluated by a panel of Vocal Arts faculty.
  • There is no specific preparation needed; callback material will be the repertoire prepared for the audition.
  • Do not wear audition clothing for the callback; please wear clothing in which you can work and move comfortably.
  • Callbacks will be held following the conclusion of the first-round auditions, on the same day.
  • Callbacks typically start in the afternoon; you should plan on being available until 10PM on your audition day.

If you are not called back, you may reasonably conclude that you are not under consideration for admission.

Accompanist Information

  • Works with piano accompaniment must be accompanied for the in-person audition
  • We encourage you to use a Juilliard accompanist for your audition
  • Accompanists will be provided free of charge for the audition; please note that accompanists charge fees for rehearsals
  • A list of accompanists will be provided approximately two weeks before auditions. You must contact an accompanist from the list two weeks prior to your audition and provide them with a piano score of the repertoire for the audition
  • If you wish to bring your own accompanist, you may do so. However, Juilliard will not pay them, nor can your Juilliard audition be rescheduled around your accompanist's availability
  • If you plan to play with a Juilliard-provided accompanist, please carefully consider general familiarity of your repertoire. Juilliard cannot guarantee accompanists will know unusual or non-standard repertoire. Please be particularly mindful to select contemporary works that have become standard repertoire or have piano parts which are easily sight read. If the Juilliard accompanists hired for your audition day are unable to learn or sight read a non-standard work, you may need to play that work unaccompanied

Decisions & Enrolling

There are three possible outcomes to the audition process:

  • The faculty recommends you to the Admissions Committee based on your potential and artistry as demonstrated in the audition.
  • The Admissions Committee evaluates your academic record and supplemental materials in order to determine your capacity to succeed at Juilliard.
  • The Admissions Committee makes the final determination of whom to admit based on their own evaluation, faculty recommendations, and the number of available openings in your major.
  • The Office of Admissions releases your decision letter.
  • The faculty recommends you to the Admissions Committee based on your potential and artistry as demonstrated in the audition.
  • You are placed on the waitlist because, although you are found admissible to the school, we have a limited number of openings.
  • Should a place become available, the Admissions Committee evaluates the waitlist, making offers of admission as necessary.  

Deny During the application process, there are three points at which you can be denied admission:

  • As a result of prescreening
  • At various points in the application and audition process
  • Following review by the Admissions Committee 

A denial at any of these stages results in notification that you are no longer under consideration for admission.

These decisions will be posted to your application status page  as noted on the timeline.

1. Connect a high-quality microphone to your computer.

2. Make sure your microphone is set as the default recording device on your browser.

3. Select the language you would like to speak (Click the button on the top right corner).

Requirements: - Google app [↗] installed on your Android device. - Any of the supported browsers if you choose to use the web app.

Supported android browsers (not a full list): Chrome browser (recommended), Edge, Opera, Brave, Vivaldi.

1. Tap the button with the language name (on a web app) or language code (on android app) on the top right corner to select your language.

2. Tap the microphone button. The SpeechTexter app will ask for permission to record audio. Choose 'allow' to enable microphone access.

Common problems on a desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux OS)

Error: 'speechtexter cannot access your microphone'..

Please give permission to access your microphone.

Click on the "padlock" icon next to the URL bar, find the "microphone" option, and choose "allow".

Error: 'No speech was detected. Please try again'.

If you get this error while you are speaking, make sure your microphone is set as the default recording device on your browser [see step 2].

If you're using a headset, make sure the mute switch on the cord is off.

The internet connection is poor. Please try again later.

The result won't transfer to the "editor".

The result confidence is not high enough or there is a background noise. An accumulation of long text in the buffer can also make the engine stop responding, please make some pauses in the speech.

The results are wrong.

Please speak loudly and clearly. Speaking clearly and consistently will help the software accurately recognize your words.

Reduce background noise. Background noise from fans, air conditioners, refrigerators, etc. can drop the accuracy significantly. Try to reduce background noise as much as possible.

Speak directly into the microphone. Speaking directly into the microphone enhances the accuracy of the software. Avoid speaking too far away from the microphone.

Speak in complete sentences. Speaking in complete sentences will help the software better recognize the context of your words.

Can I upload an audio file and get the transcription?

No, this feature is not available.

How do I transcribe an audio (video) file on my PC or from the web?

Playback your file in any player and hit the 'mic' button on the SpeechTexter website to start capturing the speech. For better results select "Stereo Mix" as the default recording device on your browser, if you are accessing SpeechTexter and the file from the same device.

I don't see the "Stereo mix" option (Windows OS)

"Stereo Mix" might be hidden or it's not supported by your system. If you are a Windows user go to 'Control panel' → Hardware and Sound → Sound → 'Recording' tab. Right-click on a blank area in the pane and make sure both "View Disabled Devices" and "View Disconnected Devices" options are checked. If "Stereo Mix" appears, you can enable it by right clicking on it and choosing 'enable'. If "Stereo Mix" hasn't appeared, it means it's not supported by your system. You can try using a third-party program such as "Virtual Audio Cable" or "VB-Audio Virtual Cable" to create a virtual audio device that includes "Stereo Mix" functionality.

How to use the voice commands list?

The voice commands list allows you to insert the punctuation, some text, or run some preset functions (#newparagraph, #undo, #redo) using only your voice. On the first column you enter your voice command. On the second column you enter a punctuation mark or a function. Voice commands are case-sensitive. Available functions: #newparagraph (insert new paragraph), #undo (undo the last change), #redo (redo the last change)

To use the function above make a pause in your speech until all previous dictated speech appears in your note, then say "insert a new paragraph" and wait for the command execution.

  • Navigate to the voice commands list [↑] on this website.
  • Click on the edit button to update or add new punctuation marks you think other users might find useful in your language.
  • Click on the "Export" button located above the voice commands list to save your list in JSON format to your device.

Can I prevent my custom voice commands from disappearing after closing the browser?

SpeechTexter by default saves your data inside your browser's cache. If your browsers clears the cache your data will be deleted. However, you can export your custom voice commands to your device and import them when you need them by clicking the corresponding buttons above the list. SpeechTexter is using JSON format to store your voice commands. You can create a .txt file in this format on your device and then import it into SpeechTexter. An example of JSON format is shown below:

I lost my dictated work after closing the browser.

SpeechTexter doesn't store any text that you dictate. Please use the "autosave" option or click the "download" button (recommended). The "autosave" option will try to store your work inside your browser's cache, where it will remain until you switch the "text autosave" option off, clear the cache manually, or if your browser clears the cache on exit.

Where does SpeechTexter store the saved files?

Version 1.5 and above stores the files in the internal memory.

Version 1.4.9 and below stores the files inside the "SpeechTexter" folder at the root directory of your device.

After updating the app from version 1.x.x to version 2.x.x my files have disappeared

As a result of recent updates, the Android operating system has implemented restrictions that prevent users from accessing folders within the Android root directory, including SpeechTexter's folder. However, your old files can still be imported manually by selecting the "import" button within the Speechtexter application.

Here’s how to ensure that your application supports your resume, highlights your most relevant qualifications, and impresses the hiring manager.

Get off to a direct start.  In your first paragraph, explain why you are writing. Mention the job title and company name, and where you found the job listing. While you can also briefly mention why you are a strong candidate, this section should be short and to the point.

Offer something different than what's in your resume. You can make your language a bit more personal than in your resume bullet points, and you can tell a narrative about your work experience and career.

Application letters typically accompany resumes, so your letter should showcase information that your resume doesn't.

Make a good case.  Your first goal with this letter is to progress to the next step: an interview. Your overarching goal, of course, is to get a job offer. Use your application letter to further both causes. Offer details about your experience and background that show why you are a good candidate. How have other jobs prepared you for the position? What would you bring to the position, and to the company? Use this space to  emphasize your strengths .

Close with all the important details.  Include a thank you at the end of your letter. You can also share your contact information and mention how you will follow up.

When to File Your Adjustment of Status Application for Family-Sponsored or Employment-Based Preference Visas: March 2024

Are you seeking to adjust your status and become a U.S. permanent resident under a family-sponsored or employment-based preference immigrant visa? If you have not yet had a relative or employer file an immigrant visa petition on your behalf, please learn more about the Adjustment of Status Filing Process . If you already have a petition filed or approved on your behalf, you may have to wait for an available visa in your category (if applicable) before you can file your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status . This page will help you determine when to file your adjustment of status application.

When to File

Use the Visa Bulletin charts below to determine when to file your adjustment of status application.

To use the charts:

  • Find your visa type in the first column (on the left) of the appropriate chart (Family-sponsored or Employment-based).
  • Stay in that row and move directly to the right to find the corresponding date under the country of your birth (as listed in the boldface columns across the top).
  • If the date on the chart is current (“C”), or your priority date is earlier than the date on the chart, you may file your adjustment of status application, if otherwise eligible to do so.
  •  “U” means unauthorized; for example, numbers are not authorized for issuance.

Your priority date is generally the date when your relative or employer properly filed the immigrant visa petition on your behalf with USCIS. If a labor certification is required to be filed with your immigrant visa petition, the priority date is the date the labor certification application was accepted for processing by the Department of Labor.

About the Visa Bulletin

DOS publishes current immigrant visa availability information in a monthly Visa Bulletin . The Visa Bulletin indicates when statutorily limited visas are available for issuance to prospective immigrants based on their individual priority date.

On Nov. 20, 2014, the Secretary of Homeland Security directed USCIS to work with DOS to:

  • Ensure that all immigrant visas authorized by Congress are issued to eligible individuals when there is sufficient demand for such visas, and
  • Improve the Visa Bulletin system for determining when immigrant visas are available to applicants during the fiscal year.

Additionally, in July 2015, the Administration issued its report on Modernizing and Streamlining Our Legal Immigration System for the 21st Century (PDF) . This report included detailed recommendations to revise and update the monthly Visa Bulletin to better estimate immigrant visa availability and provide needed predictability to nonimmigrant workers seeking permanent residency.

USCIS, in coordination with DOS, revised the procedures for determining visa availability for applicants waiting to file for adjustment of status. The revised process will better align with procedures DOS uses for noncitizens who seek to become U.S. permanent residents by applying for immigrant visas at U.S. consulates and embassies abroad.

This revised process will enhance DOS’s ability to more accurately predict overall immigrant visa demand in determining the cut-off dates for the Visa Bulletin. This will help ensure that the maximum number of immigrant visas are issued annually as intended by Congress, and minimize month-to-month fluctuations in Visa Bulletin final action dates. Additional goals are outlined in the White House report, Modernizing and Streamlining Our Legal Immigration System for the 21st Century (PDF) .

New Visa Bulletin Charts

The Visa Bulletin will now have two different charts because of the revised procedures. DOS will post two charts per visa preference category in the DOS Visa Bulletin. The charts are:

  • Application Final Action Dates (dates when visas may finally be issued); and
  • Dates for Filing Applications (earliest dates when applicants may be able to apply).

When USCIS determines there are immigrant visas available for the filing of additional adjustment of status applications, the Dates for Filing Applications chart may be used to determine when to file an adjustment of status application with USCIS. Otherwise, the Application Final Action Dates chart must be used to determine when to file an adjustment of status application with USCIS.

In coordination with the DOS, USCIS will monitor visa numbers each month and post the relevant chart on this page under When to File.

Determining Visa Availability

USCIS considers several factors to determine if there is a greater supply of visas than the demand for those visas. To determine visa availability, USCIS will compare the number of visas available for the remainder of the fiscal year with:

  • Documentarily qualified visa applications reported by DOS;
  • Pending adjustment of status applications reported by USCIS; and
  • Historical drop off rate of applicants for adjustment of status (for example, denials, withdrawals and abandonments)

Use voice typing to talk instead of type on your PC

With voice typing, you can enter text on your PC by speaking. Voice typing uses online speech recognition, which is powered by Azure Speech services.

How to start voice typing

To use voice typing, you'll need to be connected to the internet, have a working microphone, and have your cursor in a text box.

Once you turn on voice typing, it will start listening automatically. Wait for the "Listening..." alert before you start speaking.

Note:  Press Windows logo key + Alt + H to navigate through the voice typing menu with your keyboard. 

Install a voice typing language

You can use a voice typing language that's different than the one you've chosen for Windows. Here's how:

Select Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region .

Find Preferred languages in the list and select Add a language .

Search for the language you'd like to install, then select Next .

Select Next or install any optional language features you'd like to use. These features, including speech recognition, aren't required for voice typing to work.

Switch voice typing languages

To switch voice typing languages, you'll need to change the input language you use. Here's how:

Use voice typing commands to quickly edit text by saying things like "delete that" or "select that".

Note:  If a word or phrase is selected, speaking any of the “delete that” commands will remove it.

Punctuation commands

Use voice typing commands to insert punctuation marks.

Use dictation to convert spoken words into text anywhere on your PC with Windows 10. Dictation uses speech recognition, which is built into Windows 10, so there's nothing you need to download and install to use it.

To start dictating, select a text field and press the Windows logo key + H to open the dictation toolbar. Then say whatever’s on your mind.  To stop dictating at any time while you're dictating, say “Stop dictation.”

If you’re using a tablet or a touchscreen, tap the microphone button on the touch keyboard to start dictating. Tap it again to stop dictation, or say "Stop dictation."

Use dictation commands to tell you PC what to do, like “delete that” or “select the previous word.”

The following table tells you what you can say. If a word or phrase is in bold , it's an example. Replace it with similar words to get the result you want.

Dictating letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols

You can dictate most numbers and punctuation by saying the number or punctuation character. To dictate letters and symbols, say "start spelling." Then say the symbol or letter, or use the ICAO phonetic alphabet.

To dictate an uppercase letter, say “uppercase” before the letter. For example, “uppercase A” or “uppercase alpha.” When you’re done, say “stop spelling.”

Berlinale workers call out festival’s stance on gaza war.

A group of Berlin Film Festival workers and contractors have published an open letter calling out the Berlinale for its official stance on the war in Gaza.

“We join a global solidarity movement to demand an immediate ceasefire and call for the release of all hostages,” it reads.

The letter, published online two days before the start of the 74th Berlinale on Thursday, Feb. 15, called on the Berlinale to go further than its official statement, on Jan.19, in which co-directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian said their sympathy “goes out to all the victims of the humanitarian crises in the Middle East and elsewhere” saying they “take a firm stand against all forms of discrimination and are committed to intercultural understanding.”

“As the world bears witness to an inconceivable loss of civilian life in Gaza — including those of journalists, artists, and film workers — as well as the destruction of unique cultural heritage,” the open letter reads, “we need stronger institutional stances. We expect the festival to take a stance that is consistent with those taken in response to other events that have struck the international community in recent years.”

The polarizing debate surrounding the war in Gaza war was already primed to spark protests in Berlin . Ahead of the festival, two directors set to screen films in Berlin’s Forum Expanded section bowed out, citing solidarity with Strike Germany, an online petition that calls for a boycott of all state-sponsored cultural institutions in Germany because of Berlin’s supposed pro-Israeli position in the war.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to the Berlinale for comment.

Some colleges offer students their own aid forms after FAFSA delays frustrate families

Tired of struggling with the new federal financial aid form ?

Colleges are too. 

So a handful of them across the country have launched their own financial aid forms. While these forms don't replace the 2024-2025 free application for federal student aid (FAFSA), schools can use them to estimate financial aid awards for students. Some schools guarantee their portion of the award up to a certain amount; others simply provide a breakdown of what students are eligible for. 

Either way, they’re offering families and students some immediate clarity to help them make decisions on school. The Department of Education, which had a rocky rollout of its new simplified FAFSA , doesn’t even expect to start sending the data that schools need to determine awards until mid-March. That would push the first award letters out to late March or early April. 

Choosing a school is “a monumental decision for an 18-year-old and for parents and their pocketbook, and the FAFSA delay only adds an extra layer of stress,” said Rob Reddy, vice president of enrollment management at Missouri’s St. Louis University (SLU). “We want to provide services and support. Students’ enrollments were in jeopardy.”

How is a school’s financial aid form different from FAFSA? 

Schools say their financial aid form mirrors the FAFSA. Whatever information you need for FAFSA is pretty much the same for the school's version. That said, students who have parents without Social Security numbers should be able to complete school forms without any issues, unlike the current FAFSA .  

Sometimes, the school form is even shorter than the new simplified FAFSA , which includes about 36 questions, down from the previous 108. 

At Worcester, Massachusetts-based Assumption University, which launched its form last October , there are only 12 questions: eight for parents and four for students. 

Are school estimates for financial aid accurate without FAFSA? 

All the schools USA Today interviewed said yes, if the information provided by students and families is accurate. 

To build their models, schools used the same tables as the government to estimate financial aid.  

Since offering their own aid estimates can carry risks, especially if they’re guaranteeing some aid based on their in-house form, schools tested extensively to make sure they “were really close to the mark,” said Chip Timmons, dean of enrollment management and director of admissions at Wabash College in Indiana. 

Do I still need to complete the FAFSA? 

Yes, you should still complete the FAFSA.  

Some schools are only providing students with estimates of how their financial aid and costs will break down based either on the information they enter on the school’s aid form or from a screenshot of their FAFSA confirmation. Awards will be official once their FAFSA is processed.  

Others like Assumption and SLU guarantee their aid awards, provided the information you submit is accurate.  If the institutional aid in your award doesn’t cover your costs, you’ll need the FAFSA to receive your federal money , they said. 

When do I receive my award from a school financial aid form? 

The turnaround can be a week or two from when you submit your financial aid form, school administrators said. 

As soon as the Department of Education said its FAFSA launch would be delayed to the end of 2023 , schools like Assumption and Wabash jumped to offer their aid applications to help their "early decision" candidates.

However, once it became clear in January that the new FAFSA would pose technical challenges to families and students trying to access the form, some schools extended their aid applications to "regular decision" candidates. 

Other institutions followed suit. Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts launched its form in late January; John Carroll University in Ohio and St. Louis University began theirs this month.

What else are schools doing to help? 

Many schools are extending their commitment deadline , which is usually May 1. Schools that are giving families more time include Assumption , Columbia College in Chicago, and Emerson College in Boston. A running list is being compiled by college counselor Danny Tajeda.  

Will schools offer their financial aid forms beyond this year? 

Possibly.  

When SLU decided to spend unbudgeted money to develop its own form, then test and market it, the school committed to considering a five-year plan to justify the expense, said Reddy, the vice president of enrollment management.

Future options include rolling out a 2025-2026 form earlier than the FAFSA’s October 1 date or using it as an educational tool for middle schoolers, 9 th and 10 th graders “to prepare them for what it means to complete the FAFSA,” he said. “We can use it with guidance in communities that are under-resourced.” 

Anything to help students and families get through the delays this year and in the future is paramount, administrators said.  

“The financial aid process can be overwhelming for anyone, and many of our students are first-generation college students who have no experience with these filings,” said John McLaughlin, vice president for enrollment at Anna Maria.

Louisville ABC denies Family Dollar's application to sell alcohol in West and South ends

Family Dollar's request to sell alcohol at 13 of its locations — primarily in the West and South ends of Louisville — has been denied by Louisville Metro Alcohol Beverage Control, city officials announced Tuesday.

"The ability to sell alcohol is a privilege, not a right," ABC Director Brad Silveria said at a press conference Tuesday morning held by Mayor Craig Greenberg.

Councilwomen Donna Purvis and Tammy Hawkins had previously asked constituents to voice their opposition to Family Dollar's malt liquor license applications by writing letters to the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

This resulted in an "even greater outpouring of protest letters, phone calls and emails," according to the formal denial of the licenses signed by Silveria.

Other reasons provided in the denial include:

  • Some of the Family Dollar stores have outstanding tax obligations and liens
  • There were "false materials" on applications
  • One store is in a dry precinct
  • The stores could adversely impact the "potential for future growth" in the neighborhoods where they are located
  • Other stores that sell malt liquor are located within a one-mile radius of the Family Dollars.

Ultimately, it "would not be in the public interest of the residents of Louisville/Jefferson Metro, Kentucky," the denial says.

Greenberg — who announced plans to hold weekly press conferences — said it was important to listen to neighbors and supported the application's denial.

"Each time these applications have come up, we've heard concerns and protests from the community," he said. "Our residents believe that more liquor outlets in neighborhoods that already have plenty of liquor stores, and not nearly enough grocery stores, will not serve our community in positive ways."

Hawkins agreed.

“We should always listen to the community who put us in these roles," she said at a press conference Tuesday morning.

Family Dollar has the option to appeal the denial. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
