Perhaps it's the combination of Sunday night's Mad Men finale and the flurry of Sopranos discussion that followed the death of James Gandolfini, but it's hard not to be struck by the explosion of writing about television that's occurred in the last 15 years or so, facilitated (of course) by the ability to go from rolling credits to publication in an hour (if necessary). After any major episode, there will be a flurry of commentary, and even after minor episodes of minor shows, there are write-ups here and there.

But while these pieces — whether you call them recaps, reviews, essays, commentaries, whatever — may look the same, there are a bunch of different ways to do them, and understanding the kinds that are out there might help you find the kind you like. So here they are: the seven ways people commonly write about television.*

The Craft model . In a lot of ways, this is the kind of criticism with which people are most familiar. It's focused on the quality of work that goes into a show — how strong is the directing, writing, acting, lighting, scoring, and so forth. The higher-brow the show is, the more Craft writing there is; nobody spends a lot of time writing about the direction on NCIS or The Big Bang Theory , even if they like those shows.

That doesn't mean there is no craft — it just means either writers are usually not interested in writing about it or they don't have the familiarity with the form to analyze it effectively. Craft writing probably requires the most background knowledge and the most experience, and it's where you're most likely to fall into a hole if you don't actually know which pieces of a show's quality are the result of direction, for instance, versus writing. To give you an example of Craft done well, Matt Zoller Seitz is a Craft writer, mostly. (Although, I should note, everyone I know who's a good writer incorporates elements of all these models. But Matt is a Craft guy.)

The Ethical model. It's almost a subspecies within the Craft model, but it deserves its own section, I think. The Ethical model is where writers address the sociological implications of how the show is made. In the reality setting, this is pretty obvious — were people subjected to terrible conditions, and so forth. But Ethical writing also tends to incorporate issues of gender, race, sexuality, politics, and so forth. Perpetuating stereotypes, representation behind and in front of the camera — this is where Ethical writing gets its strength. Alyssa Rosenberg does a lot of Ethical writing at Think Progress; she's probably the only writer I can think of where that's what she sees as her primary beat (perhaps unsurprisingly).

The Puzzle model. This is the writing that tries to uncover hidden meanings and explain symbolism. The idea is to take your sharp eye, as the writer, and note things that other people perhaps wouldn't notice. The absolute best Puzzle writing I'm aware of at the moment is Mad Style , the weekly column breaking down the costuming of Mad Men , found at the fashion site Tom and Lorenzo . Most costume commentary, other than this, is part of the Craft model — admiring the sheer beauty of wardrobe choices or the skill in matching them to the period. But Mad Style treats fashion like other writing treats any other kind of messaging and applies specialized knowledge to surface pieces of the storytelling that aren't obvious.

But whenever writers are pointing out callbacks, metaphors, symbolism, lines that have double meanings — that's all Puzzle stuff. In many, many episode recaps, you'll find bullet points at the end, some of which will be Puzzle content that doesn't fit anywhere else.

The Maker model. These are the pieces of writing that focus on the relationship between a show and its creator, in spite of the fact that lots of people's work go into the final product. It's kind of like auteur theory in film, although it tends to be a little more from-the-hip with television, and it doesn't necessarily indicate that anyone is sophisticated enough to be considered an auteur. These are things like Emily Nussbaum's marvelous New Yorker piece on Ryan Murphy, "Queer Eyes, Full Heart." There are makers who attract much more Maker writing than others — Shonda Rhimes, oddly enough, attracts less of it than you might expect, given her massive impact on the ABC lineup, while Lena Dunham attracts outrageous tons of it, despite her relatively small audience. (Aaron Sorkin gets more of it the more he complains about it, which is sweet justice for someone, but I'm not sure who.)

The Riff model. This is writing that sees television primarily as a jumping-off point for jokes. It's what Television Without Pity was when I worked there, it's what Previously.tv is, and it's what a lot of Vulture recaps are, including (for instance) Dave Holmes writing about American Idol .

The Vignette model. On a personal note, this is probably the model I use the most. Monday's piece about the Mad Men finale falls into this category; on a less serious note, so does the Scandal piece I wrote about how everyone in the world should dump Fitz. In the Vignette model, you look at a piece of television as a little story, and then you address a bunch of discussion questions. Can Don be saved? Is Megan misunderstood? Can Walter White turn his life around? Should Alicia Florrick get back together with her husband? These aren't really about the quality of the product, exactly, they're questions the product provokes . The episode, in this case, just exists — it's like an essay question on a test. "Discuss."

A lot of people are completely baffled by Vignette writing. This is where you get the "What are you talking about THESE ARE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS!" stuff, as if you'd never talk about what the people in a story did unless it was true. The irony is that Vignette writing freaks people out, but it was the first literary analysis most of us ever learned: Why does this character lie? What should this person have done? What motivated Iago?

Vignette writing is also what animates just about everyone who likes writing about reality TV, because while there's a lot of craft involved in differentiating good reality from bad, that's not what most of the writing is about. Most of the writing, whether serious or funny, is about the people in the story and what their behavior says about the way people act. I don't remember ever having an incredibly fascinating conversation about the crafting of reality shows except with people who make them or appear on them, but I've had many, many great discussions about (for instance) the distinction between the kinds of men who win Survivor and the kinds of women who win, or why The Bachelor contestants act like being divorced is scandalous, or why you can't have alliances on The Amazing Race . Again, you just take the story as a story. Discuss .

The Service model. There are people who really do spend a lot of time just telling you what happened without comment, where the primary purpose of the piece is to fill you in if you missed it. This is basically a human taking the place of your DVR if you forgot to set it.

So there you have it: the seven ways to write about television. Of course, this is less a set of distinct areas with sharp boundaries and more a color wheel where one thing blends into another, because you'll usually see elements of all of them in a good and comprehensive piece of writing, but most of us are more interested in some of these kinds of writing than others, and it's good to have a sense of the landscape when you're looking for a home.

*These are ways, I should note, to write commentary. There is also a world of more traditional reporting, including profiles and breaking news, that's a separate issue entirely. That, in turn, is subdivided into business reporting (who's got a deal with which studio), show reporting (stories about production and creation), and the weird world of plot reporting (news stories about fictional characters — so-and-so will die, so-and-so will have an affair with so-and-so).

Interpersonal relationships depend on a variety of internal and external factors, and television remains one of the most controversial issues in human life. On the one hand, according to Martin and Jacobus (2019), social interactions offered on TV are predictable and rather slick, with no solid room for experimentation and imagination. On the other hand, access to television programs has already become a meaningful international movement (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). It means that information may be displayed on TV and provoke certain emotions and behaviors. People want to and can watch as many shows and episodes as possible to cover their personal needs and emotional satisfaction. They compare experiences, analyze environments, and develop discussions to demonstrate what they learn from the offered material. For example, high social expectations and new perspectives on obligations depicted on TV affect adolescents and adults. In this essay, analyzing the course reading and an interview with a friend allows learning that despite a common context and technical advancement, television has a great impact on people.

Despite the intention to control the impact of TV on children, it is hard for parents to ensure that proper shows and episodes are chosen for watching. During this interview, my friend recognized two shows that determined her childhood and adolescence – Friends (NBC, 1994-2004) and Beverly Hills 90210 (CBS, 1990-2000). At that moment, watching the chosen series was related to multiple positive emotions because the authors depicted the nature of teenage and adult relationships and the quality of life that American citizens could have (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). For example, in Beverly Hills , school and college education were described, with a special evaluation of current problems of drug abuse, sexual violence, bullying, and friendship. In Friends , attention was paid to the essence of friendship and situations when certain decisions should be made and preferences should be established. It was learned that even the most intelligent and careful people could make mistakes and needed to analyze their behaviors in particular contexts. Each show seriously impacted the interviewee’s behavior and acceptance of reality. Those stories prepared adolescents for their grown-up lives where racial, gender, and age inequality existed and put various restrictions on an individual’s activities.

The ways of making TV shows have changed with time, including various technological and social aspects, but their impact on people stays the same. Today, there is no need to wait for a particular time but use the Internet and watch favorite shows anytime. The interviewee shared her interest in such series as Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 2005 – ) and Gossip Girl (CW, 2007-2012). Almost every episode brought some new experiences and emotions to her life because the characters lived their lives, solved problems, and achieved their goals. Martin and Jacobus (2019) notice that many modern episodes are self-contained, and it does not take much preparation or explanation in advance. Therefore, the number of viewers changes regularly, and some people demonstrate their interest or choose other shows. My friend admires Grey’s Anatomy due to its surgical themes and how health care has been recently improved. Gossip Girl is a show about modern teenagers, their problems, and their dreams. It reveals what young people want, what steps they are ready to take, and how family business affects children’s future. Instead of inspiration or motivation, these series provoke critical thinking and evaluation.

Addressing the chosen TV shows and learning the material from the textbook, it has become evident that television’s impact cannot be ignored. Despite the year of production and distribution, the main goal of any product is to entertain people and gain commercial benefits (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). However, modern researchers and sociologists admit that new programs are characterized by biased or sensationalist judgments that discourage social engagement and misinform people (Rothwell, 2019). Therefore, it is important to be cautious and accept the offered material for advertising purposes. Marked influence continues to grow and promote the American style of life in many countries abroad. Video art has become a serious competitor to commercial television, offering experimental and radical ideas to please the audience (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). This sphere of art has not been properly examined yet, but its abilities are unpredictable and captivating. Although some people are confident in the television industry, it is wrong to neglect the possibility of improvement but gain a better meaning. Compared to the adolescent period, when viewers admire opportunities and discover new sources of inspiration, adulthood makes them more attentive to the significant details.

Communication with my friend and the evaluation of old and new TV shows and video art ideas turn out to be a valuable experience in understanding how people should treat television. Different in quality and distribution periods, most series are similar in their context and purposes. They aim to describe human lives, address social, economic, and political problems, and show how certain decisions lead to certain outcomes. However, even if the episodes vary, their impact on people is definite – watching, learning, and following the examples. Images and sounds have been improved regardless of the viewer’s readiness or knowledge levels. Still, how individuals accept these stories has nothing to do with technology but personal judgments and attitudes toward society.

It is commonly observed nowadays that teenagers are excessively using foul language. They are seen while participating in violent showdowns and copying what they see in movies and wrestling. Spending more and more time watching television for hours, causes serious health hazards among people like obesity and other health complications.

It also interferes with the sleep cycle of the viewers. People often waste productive sleep hours watching television. Finally these poor sleeping practices cause depression, headache and several other illnesses. Addiction of Television also affects social interactions. It can ruins relationships.

Watching television in excess is a wastage of time. Our most of the time is consumed in television. It disturbs our working commitments. It has been observed, specially among students, that they waste their precious time in television. They do not give proper time to their studies that at last affect their academic progress.

Although feature film screenplays and television screenplays have many similarities such as scene headings , formatting techniques , dialogue, and character descriptions there are many differences between writing for television and writing for film. To understand the differences, it's first important to understand how a TV show gets made. This Vox video conveniently breaks down the TV making process.

Understanding writing for television

1. Script Length: Most obviously, writing for television involves much shorter scripts than writing for features. The run time of a television show ranges from 30 minutes to 60 minutes while a feature film is at least 90 minutes long resulting in the difference in script length.

2. Story Engine: Feature films are meant to be resolved by the end of the film. Television shows, on the other hand, are meant to last multiple seasons. This means that writing for television is dependent on creating different driving forces than a film.

Films that last a whopping six to nine seasons are often very character driven, relying more on the audience's investment in the characters rather than the plot points themself.

TV shows often have multiple central characters that move the show forward unlike features that typically have a single central protagonist. TV shows utilize multiple story lines otherwise known as A, B, and C story lines.

3. Structure: Because both the length and engine of a television show both differ from that of a film, the structure of a television show also differs. Writing for television aims to retain the audience's attention and set up following episodes.

4. Lack of immediate resolution: The episodic format of a television show means that each central narrative lasts over the course of multiple episodes or even seasons. For that reason, TV shows do not need to tie a neat bow on every episode with a resolution unlike a film.

Welcome back to The Daily’s Sunday culture edition, in which one Atlantic writer or editor reveals what’s keeping them entertained. Today’s special guest is Rogé Karma, a staff writer who has written about the secretive industry devouring the U.S. economy , Americans’ enduring economic pessimism , and the large-scale evaporation of the crime and inflation crises .

Rogé is currently enjoying his first watch of The Wire , a show described by a friend as “American Tolstoy.” His media diet also includes reading The Brothers Karamazov , keeping up with ContraPoints videos on YouTube, and listening to Taylor Swift while waiting for her upcoming album.

The Culture Survey: Rogé Karma

The television show I’m most enjoying right now: I have to pick two here. The first is Schitt’s Creek , which I think is hands down the funniest show I’ve ever watched.

The second is The Wire , which I began watching a few months ago after a friend (who happens to have an English Ph.D.) described it to me as “American Tolstoy.” I thought there was no way any show could live up to that description—and then it did. What stands out most is the way it blurs the lines between good and evil, just and unjust. Most police shows are predicated on a neat separation between the heroic cops and the terrible criminals. But The Wire makes clear that what sets apart the police officers and the drug dealers isn’t some intrinsic moral superiority; the difference is the respective systems they find themselves in. In one of those systems, anger and ambition are rewarded with accolades and promotions; in the other, they are punished with prison time.

An online creator that I’m a fan of: Again, I have to pick two. There’s just something about lefty YouTubers who create feature-length videos combining dazzling theatrics, ironic humor, and long monologues that really does it for me.

The first is ContraPoints. At a time when I didn’t personally know many trans people, she really opened my mind to what it means to have an experience so unlike my own—but did so in a way that brought me along, and that sincerely answered my very basic (and at times ignorant) questions about everything from pronouns to J. K. Rowling . It also helps that her videos are legitimate works of art.

The second is Dan Olson at Folding Ideas. I first came across his viral video, “ Line Goes Up ,” in early 2022 and have been hooked ever since. There is, to this day, no single more compelling exploration—and indictment—of the world of crypto than that video. Olson completely immerses himself in fringe internet subcultures and conspiracy theories and then brings you inside of them too, while retaining a sense of bemused detachment that makes his content wildly entertaining.

An author I would read anything by: Greg Boyle, a Jesuit priest and the founder of Homeboy Industries, the world’s largest gang-rehabilitation organization. Boyle’s singular gift as a writer is his ability to see—and communicate—the best of humanity in those who are often considered the worst of it. All of his books are incredible, but my favorite is Barking to the Choir . I don’t think any other author has broken my heart open so fully. And if you’re not convinced yet, just try getting through this 11-minute speech of his without bawling.

Best novel I’ve read, and the best work of nonfiction: I’m usually a nonfiction obsessive, but I’m going to break form and go with two novels here.

The Brothers Karamazov is the single greatest work of moral philosophy I’ve ever read (and I was forced to read a lot of philosophy in college). It is fundamentally about the question: What does it mean to live an ethical life (and how much does morality hinge on belief in God)? The characters don’t just sit in an ivory tower opining about the answers to these questions; they move through the world with radically different ontologies and ethical frameworks, and as a reader, you get to witness firsthand where those worldviews lead them. No amount of Aristotle or Kant can give you that.

There’s a quote from the Dutch historian Rutger Bregman that I love. To him, imagining utopia “isn’t an attempt to predict the future. It’s an attempt to unlock the future. To fling open the windows of our minds.” That’s what The Dispossessed , by Ursula K. Le Guin, did for me. I’ve never come across a more serious effort to imagine what it would mean to build a truly socialist society—including the political structures, cultural traits, social norms, and even linguistic tics that would make that economic system work. The result is neither the hellish dystopia that the right imagines nor the perfect paradise the left does.

My favorite way of wasting time on my phone: Looking at food recipes and recipe videos. I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about food. Because of my family background, I’m partial to Lebanese and Palestinian cuisine, but I’ve recently been on a pretty strong Korean food kick, and I’ve found The Korean Vegan’s TikTok videos (and cookbook) to be a godsend. Pick Up Limes’s YouTube channel is also a must-watch for anyone who wants access to a plethora of delicious, cheap, healthy, and easy-to-cook meals.

The upcoming entertainment event I’m most looking forward to: Honestly, it’s the release of Taylor Swift’s next album, The Tortured Poets Department . First, because I am engaged to one of the biggest Swifties the world has ever seen (who has successfully converted me to the cause). Second, because of what a once-in-a-generation opportunity it is to witness an artist who is at the top of her game the way T. Swift is. I always wonder what it would have been like to experience Beatlemania, in the 1960s. I think this may be the closest I’ll ever get.

Civil War , a dystopian action film about a team of journalists pushing to reach the White House before rebel factions do (in theaters Friday)
Fallout , a postapocalyptic drama series based on the popular video-game franchise, about the survivors of a nuclear war who finally venture out of their fallout bunkers (premieres Thursday on Prime Video)
Mania , a novel by Lionel Shriver that’s set in an alternate version of 2011, in which everybody is considered equally smart and discrimination against less intelligent people is banned (out Tuesday)

Five Deadly Venoms Essay - 1978 Cheh Chang Movie Film

Crime Scene is a monthly Vague Visages column about the relationship between crime cinema and movie locations. VV’s Five Deadly Venoms essay contains spoilers. Cheh Chang’s 1978 film features Sheng Chiang, Chien Sun and Phillip Chung-Fung Kwok. Most of the featured movies in this column are unequivocally “crime” films. Just as importantly, all of the movies covered thus far were unabashedly marketed as crime productions — no questions about genre whenever it comes to their trailers, poster artwork or expected audience. This time around, I’m going in a different direction with a legendary Shaw Brothers kung fu film that slips in a criminal conspiracy whodunit underneath the expected fisticuffs: Five Deadly Venoms , directed by Chang Cheh (1978, alternatively called The Five Venoms ).

The Shaw Brothers studios, in their heyday, churned out films by the bucketload. For most Western viewers, their logo is inextricably linked to martial arts, with the company’s biggest worldwide hits in the 70s and 80s being kung fu flicks. Many of the plots are broadly interchangeable, revolving around stories of young heroes overcoming adversity against ne’er-do-wells, usually with the help of an aging master . That sense of interchangeability is only made more concrete by the extensive use of the Shaw backlots in Hong Kong’s Clear Water Bay Film Studio: watch enough of these movies and you’ll notice sets and props being continually reused, a result of the company’s famously parsimonious filmmaking techniques.

But amidst that interchangeability, the studio continually produced films of genuine artistry, genius and pure entertainment, courtesy of a talent pool which was able to rely on a continuous stream of work in which to hone their craft. By the late 1970s, Shaw Brothers had been the dominant studio in Hong Kong for at least a decade, though Golden Harvest (who had signed Bruce Lee) was starting to catch up. Chang was the star director, having gradually shifted from wuxia films ( The One-Armed Swordsman , 1967) to the hand-on-hand bloodiness of kung fu from the early-to-mid-70s onwards, in accordance with prevailing audience tastes. The filmmaker was unrelentingly busy, directing as many as five or six productions a year (he clocked up almost 100 features during his career). By the late 70s, however, Chang’s star was being eclipsed by his former pupil Lau Kar-leung, who had begun his career as an action choreographer before breaking out into directing on his own.

These two careers form a fascinating instructive on the possibilities of the action film form. Lau, a bona fide martial artist, utilized his movies to showcase kung fu styles and philosophies, sometimes completely at the expense of plot; his 1978 film Heroes of the East essentially ditches the story in the second half to become one long fight scene. Chang’s films tended to be more narrative and plot-focused, animated by his favorite themes of brotherly love , male bonding and camaraderie. Many critics read a certain homoeroticism to his movies, aided by his love of having characters dispatched through impalement, as Chinatown Kid (1977) literally has one fight end after a baddie gets stabbed in the ass, though Chang himself strongly rejected any such suggestions.

Whether it was out of a desire to remain in a privileged position at Shaw with newcomers snapping at his heels or a genuine desire to experiment with his craft, Chang frequently found ways to freshen his methods when budgets allowed. Though much of the filmmaker’s output focuses largely on wuxia and kung fu movies, he did utilize crime film elements in his work: The Boxer from Shantung (1972, with Hsueh-Li Pao listed as co-director) and Chinatown Kid are both structured as rise-and-fall gangland narratives. But the construction of the thriller elements in Five Deadly Venoms are the most interesting and well-developed; a complex mystery about criminal conspiracy and corruption under the guise of a kung fu flick. Chang deploys the standard tropes and iconography of the Shaw Brothers style with the pieces re-arranged. Suddenly, a layout that one has seen a hundred times before re-emerges fresh .

The opening scenes of Five Deadly Venoms introduce the main fighters, each with unique styles related to a poisonous animal: Centipede (Lu Feng), Snake (Wai Pak), Scorpion (Sun Chien), Gecko (Philip Kwok) and Toad (Lo Mang). The dying master of the Venoms style tells the disciple Yang Tieh (Chiang Sheng) to seek out the rest of clan and restore their reputation, with various members trying to track down an ill-gotten treasure. The rub, however, is that the characters are mostly only familiar with each other through their fighting styles. Thus, when Yang arrives in the city , he has little to go on.

It gradually emerges that some of the Venoms have found each other, but the group has largely split into two camps (one good and one bad) that broadly work in the dark, unaware of who or what they’re up against — a fact that’s further complicated when bodies start dropping as the evil Venoms try to cover their tracks.

The more complex, plot-driven nature of Five Deadly Venoms also means that it’s a more “talky” film than its contemporaries, as the protagonists continually have to work with new information. Thankfully, the meat of the movie is in Chang’s classical, highly detailed filmmaking, elevating the whodunit qualities into more than a plot strand while dipping into political corruption, betrayal and power.

A big part of Five Deadly Venoms’ magic is how Chang utilizes familiar Shaw sets. As with so many of the studio’s films, the movie is set in some unnamed part of Chinese history in an unnamed Chinese town. The presence of an Imperial Court and pre-modern architecture suggests Qing Dynasty, but this could be anywhere, especially for non-Chinese-speaking viewers largely unfamiliar with the details. Open space lighting plays nicely into Five Deadly Venoms’ plot, where the fortunes of the subjects are directly tied into whoever has the ear of the local authorities, with the courtroom being the location where power structures are most visibly played out. As Chang slowly reveals the identity of each Venom, it becomes clear that they’ve gradually integrated themselves into the town’s daily life: one is a detective in the police force, and another is a local businessman. Their secret assimilation into local life powers the intrigue at the heart of Five Deadly Venoms’ plot, as the bad-guy characters utilize their influence to shift suspicion away from themselves, going as far as to bribe jail guards into poisoning their inmates and then killing any witnesses. On Simon Abrams’ audio commentary for the Arrow Video release , he remarks on how Chang delineates between private and public spaces in the film. Offices, living rooms or semi-private spaces like jail cells are used for plotting and scheming, while public spaces like the city streets, the eatery or the courtroom are where realism emerges through legal decree or hand-to-hand combat.

The spatial detail in Five Deadly Venoms , aided by Chang’s sharp sense of timing, helped the film become a surprisingly labyrinthine vision of camaraderie in the face of corruption and power. The lack of “real” locations may be a natural side-effect of the Shaw style, erasing local specificities in favor of a more general “Chinese-ness” that could be sold across the diaspora, but equally it allowed the better directors in the studio stable greater control over the camera, ensuring that their consummate professional craftsmanship superseded the generic material. And so Five Deadly Venoms reached classic status by stretching the Shaw style to new places, courtesy of fresh ideas and the central twist-driven criminal conspiracy.

When the largest earthquake in Taiwan in half a century struck off its east coast, the buildings in the closest city, Hualien, swayed and rocked. As more than 300 aftershocks rocked the island over the next 24 hours to Thursday morning, the buildings shook again and again.

But for the most part, they stood.

Even the two buildings that suffered the most damage remained largely intact, allowing residents to climb to safety out the windows of upper stories. One of them, the rounded, red brick Uranus Building, which leaned precariously after its first floors collapsed, was mostly drawing curious onlookers.

The building is a reminder of how much Taiwan has prepared for disasters like the magnitude-7.4 earthquake that jolted the island on Wednesday. Perhaps because of improvements in building codes, greater public awareness and highly trained search-and-rescue operations — and, likely, a dose of good luck — the casualty figures were relatively low. By Thursday, 10 people had died and more than 1,000 others were injured. Several dozen were missing.

“Similar level earthquakes in other societies have killed far more people,” said Daniel Aldrich , a director of the Global Resilience Institute at Northeastern University. Of Taiwan, he added: “And most of these deaths, it seems, have come from rock slides and boulders, rather than building collapses.”

Across the island, rail traffic had resumed by Thursday, including trains to Hualien. Workers who had been stuck in a rock quarry were lifted out by helicopter. Roads were slowly being repaired. Hundreds of people were stranded at a hotel near a national park because of a blocked road, but they were visited by rescuers and medics.

A handful of men and women walks on a street between vehicles, some expressing shock at what they are seeing.

On Thursday in Hualien city, the area around the Uranus Building was sealed off, while construction workers tried to prevent the leaning structure from toppling completely. First they placed three-legged concrete blocks that resembled giant Lego pieces in front of the building, and then they piled dirt and rocks on top of those blocks with excavators.

“We came to see for ourselves how serious it was, why it has tilted,” said Chang Mei-chu, 66, a retiree who rode a scooter with her husband Lai Yung-chi, 72, to the building on Thursday. Mr. Lai said he was a retired builder who used to install power and water pipes in buildings, and so he knew about building standards. The couple’s apartment, near Hualien’s train station, had not been badly damaged, he said.

“I wasn’t worried about our building, because I know they paid attention to earthquake resistance when building it. I watched them pour the cement to make sure,” Mr. Lai said. “There have been improvements. After each earthquake, they raise the standards some more.”

It was possible to walk for city blocks without seeing clear signs of the powerful earthquake. Many buildings remained intact, some of them old and weather-worn; others modern, multistory concrete-and-glass structures. Shops were open, selling coffee, ice cream and betel nuts. Next to the Uranus Building, a popular night market with food stalls offering fried seafood, dumplings and sweets was up and running by Thursday evening.

Earthquakes are unavoidable in Taiwan, which sits on multiple active faults. Decades of work learning from other disasters, implementing strict building codes and increasing public awareness have gone into helping its people weather frequent strong quakes.

Not far from the Uranus Building, for example, officials had inspected a building with cracked pillars and concluded that it was dangerous to stay in. Residents were given 15 minutes to dash inside and retrieve as many belongings as they could. Some ran out with computers, while others threw bags of clothes out of windows onto the street, which was also still littered with broken glass and cement fragments from the quake.

One of its residents, Chen Ching-ming, a preacher at a church next door, said he thought the building might be torn down. He was able to salvage a TV and some bedding, which now sat on the sidewalk, and was preparing to go back in for more. “I’ll lose a lot of valuable things — a fridge, a microwave, a washing machine,” he said. “All gone.”

Requirements for earthquake resistance have been built into Taiwan’s building codes since 1974. In the decades since, the writers of Taiwan’s building code also applied lessons learned from other major earthquakes around the world, including in Mexico and Los Angeles, to strengthen Taiwan’s code.

After more than 2,400 people were killed and at least 10,000 others injured during the Chi-Chi quake of 1999, thousands of buildings built before the quake were reviewed and reinforced. After another strong quake in 2018 in Hualien, the government ordered a new round of building inspections. Since then, multiple updates to the building code have been released.

“We have retrofitted more than 10,000 school buildings in the last 20 years,” said Chung-Che Chou, the director general of the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taipei.

The government had also helped reinforce private apartment buildings over the past six years by adding new steel braces and increasing column and beam sizes, Dr. Chou said. Not far from the buildings that partially collapsed in Hualien, some of the older buildings that had been retrofitted in this way survived Wednesday’s quake, he said.

The result of all this is that even Taiwan’s tallest skyscrapers can withstand regular seismic jolts. The capital city’s most iconic building, Taipei 101, once the tallest building in the world, was engineered to stand through typhoon winds and frequent quakes. Still, some experts say that more needs to be done to either strengthen or demolish structures that don’t meet standards, and such calls have grown louder in the wake of the latest earthquake.

Taiwan has another major reason to protect its infrastructure: It is home to the majority of production for the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s largest maker of advanced computer chips. The supply chain for electronics from smartphones to cars to fighter jets rests on the output of TSMC’s factories, which make these chips in facilities that cost billions of dollars to build.

The 1999 quake also prompted TSMC to take extra steps to insulate its factories from earthquake damage. The company made major structural adjustments and adopted new technologies like early warning systems. When another large quake struck the southern city of Kaohsiung in February 2016, TSMC’s two nearby factories survived without structural damage.

Taiwan has made strides in its response to disasters, experts say. In the first 24 hours after the quake, rescuers freed hundreds of people who were trapped in cars in between rockfalls on the highway and stranded on mountain ledges in rock quarries.

“After years of hard work on capacity building, the overall performance of the island has improved significantly,” said Bruce Wong, an emergency management consultant in Hong Kong. Taiwan’s rescue teams have come to specialize in complex efforts, he said, and it has also been able to tap the skills of trained volunteers.

Taiwan’s resilience also stems from a strong civil society that is involved in public preparedness for disasters.

Ou Chi-hu, a member of a group of Taiwanese military veterans, was helping distribute water and other supplies at a school that was serving as a shelter for displaced residents in Hualien. He said that people had learned from the 1999 earthquake how to be more prepared.

“They know to shelter in a corner of the room or somewhere else safer,” he said. Many residents also keep a bag of essentials next to their beds, and own fire extinguishers, he added.

Around him, a dozen or so other charities and groups were offering residents food, money, counseling and childcare. The Tzu Chi Foundation, a large Taiwanese Buddhist charity, provided tents for families to use inside the school hall so they could have more privacy. Huang Yu-chi, a disaster relief manager with the foundation, said nonprofits had learned from earlier disasters.

“Now we’re more systematic and have a better idea of disaster prevention,” Mr. Huang said.
