How to Switch to Google Fi

Since it launched in 2015, Google’s Fi cellular service has become one of the best ways to get an affordable phone plan. Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T may be the best-known cellular providers in the US, but Fi offers better data plans, more international coverage, and the simplest setup and billing system anywhere. 

In the beginning, the catch was that Google Fi worked only on select phones, but these days it'll work on just about anything, even iPhones. (Some features, like network switching, might not be available on your phone.) I activated my Google Fi SIM card using a Nokia 5.3 , which is not an officially supported device, but it worked just fine. I also tested the SIM in the Spitz router and a Sony Xperia 1 II and am using it now in a OnePlus 7 Pro (which is officially supported). Still, you should check the compatibility of your device before you sign up.

The reason I originally made the switch? Data plans. Google likes to say that data is data. In other words, it shouldn't matter whether you're calling, texting, or downloading web pages, it's all just data over the network. I applaud that approach. However, it's important to know that Google is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), and it leases its wireless capacity from T-Mobile, which has a decidedly different view of data. I should disclose here that I did suspend my Google Fi service, because Starlink is a better value for me. Starlink is much more expensive upfront and for service, but the speeds blow mobile data out of the water. That said, if you don't need the speed or unlimited data, Google Fi remains a good value both as a phone service and as a hot spot for nomads and rural internet users like me. Here's how it works.

Google Fi offers three plans . All of them include unlimited calls and text, and none of them require a contract. There are also no signup fees, though you will have to pay taxes and government fees. For each plan, you can add up to five others for a total of six users.

• Simply Unlimited Plan for $50/month: This is probably the best choice for most people. It offers high-speed downloads up to 35 gigabytes, after which you'll be throttled. The catch is that this data works only on your phone (5 gigabytes can be used for tethering, but if you tether to other devices frequently, the next plan is your best bet).
• Unlimited Plus Plan for $65/month: If you want to use your Google Fi connection for more than just your phone, this is the plan you want. It comes with unlimited tethering, even in Canada and Mexico. After you activate your Unlimited Plus plan, you can put your chip in a 4G hot spot like the Gl.inet Spitz router ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ). This plan also gets you 100 gigabytes of storage with Google One, which you can read more about here .
• Flexible Plan for $20/month + $10 per gigabyte used: This is Google's pay-as-you-go plan. It's a good choice if you don't use much data. Data speeds are capped after 15 gigabytes, so if you're routinely going over that, you're much better off with one of the other plans.

If you're not sure how much data you typically use, there's a way to check. On Android phones, go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs , and you'll see how much data you've used in the past month. Tap App Data Usage to see which apps use up the most data, and you can also scroll through your data usage from previous months. On iPhones, you can view this by going to Settings > Cellular > Mobile Data . If you're regularly using less than 3 GB of data per month, the Flexible Plan might be the best option for you. 

All of the prices above are for a single line; they all go down slightly per line as you add more. For example, adding a second line to the Unlimited Plus Plan would make both lines $55 each, or $110 per month total (plus taxes and fees).

Once you've picked your plan and signed up, Google will mail out a SIM card. It took a couple of days for mine to arrive, but I'll gladly take the slight delay if it saves me from setting foot in a physical carrier store. (If you're using an iPhone or Google Pixel , you can set up Fi with an eSIM , meaning you don't need to wait for a physical card .)

Once your chip arrives, you'll need to use a SIM tool to pull out the SIM tray and insert the SIM card into your phone. Then, download the Google Fi app (you'll need to be on Wi-Fi to do this since your chip won't connect to the network yet), and follow the steps there. If you're porting in your old phone number, it may take a little longer. For me, after setting up a new number, Fi was up and running after about 5 minutes. That's it, you're done. 

I have traveled and lived in rural areas for the past five years, and I've tried just about every phone and hot spot plan around—none of them are anywhere near this simple. The only one that comes close is Red Pocket Mobile , which I still use in addition to Google Fi. (We have more recommendations in our Best Cheap Phone Plans guide.) There are cheaper plans out there, but in terms of ease of use and reliability, Fi is hard to beat.

You can use Google Fi as a simple way to add cellular connectivity to any device that accepts a SIM card, like a mobile hot spot. You'll need to activate your Google Fi SIM card with a phone using the Google Fi app, but once the activation is done, you can put that chip in any device your plan allows. If you go with the Unlimited Plus plan, that means you can put your chip in an iPad, Android tablet, or a 4G/5G hot spot. You are still bound by the 50-gigabyte data limit though, so make sure you don't go too crazy with the Netflix.

The easiest way to set up Google Fi in a hot spot is to order a data-only SIM . That way, you don't have to use your phone to activate the SIM first. Otherwise there doesn't seem to be a difference between data-only SIM cards and regular SIMs.

• Do I need a Google account? Yes, you do need a Google account to sign up for Google Fi, but you don't need to be all-in on Google to use Fi. I have an Android phone, and I use Google apps since that's what we use here at WIRED, but outside of work I do not use any Google services other than Fi, and it still works great.
• Is Google Fi tracking my every move? Yes , but so is your current provider. Google Fi's terms of service say Google doesn't sell what's known as customer proprietary network information—things like call location, details, and features you use—to anyone else.
• I'm traveling and want to use Google Fi abroad. Will that work? Probably not. Or at least that's what several WIRED readers have reported. Fi's terms of service do require you to activate your service in the US, but after that, in theory, it should work anywhere Fi has partnered with an in-country network . However, based on feedback from WIRED readers, and reading through travel forums, it seems that most people are being cut off if they're out of the US for more than a few weeks. I would say don't plan on using Google Fi to fulfill your digital nomad dreams.

There are several features available through the Google Fi app you might not discover at first. One of my favorites is an old Google Voice feature that allows you to forward calls to any phone you like. This is also possible in Google Fi. All you need to do is add a number to Fi's forwarding list, and any time you get a call, it will ring both your cell phone and that secondary number—whether it's a home phone, second cell, or the phone at the Airbnb you're at. This is very handy in places where your signal strength is iffy—just route the call to a landline. Similarly, it can be worth enabling the Wi-Fi calling feature for times when you have access to Wi-Fi but not a cell signal.

Another feature that's becoming more and more useful as the number of spam calls I get goes ever upward is call blocking. Android and iOS calling apps can block calls, but that just sends the caller direct to voicemail, and you still end up getting the voicemail. Block a call through the Google Fi app and the callers get a message saying your number has been disconnected or is no longer in service. As far as they know, you've changed numbers. To set this up, open the Fi app and look under Phone Settings for Spam and Blocked Numbers . Tap Manage Blocked Numbers and then you can add any number you like to the list. If you change your mind, just delete the listing.

One final thing worth mentioning: I have not canceled my Google Fi service despite switching to Starlink for most of my hot spot needs. Instead, I just suspended my Fi service using the app. That way, should I need it for some reason, I can reactivate it very quickly.

Google Fi: Phones, plans, pricing, perks, and more explained

In 2015, Google launched Project Fi , a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) compatible with Nexus and Pixel smartphones  (and the Motorola Moto X4 ). Three years later, the company announced the project had been brought directly under Google’s branding with a name change to “ Google Fi .” Since then, Google’s MVNO has gone from strength to strength, and today, it is compatible with the majority of Android devices, and it even works with iPhones.

Google Fi offers data, voice, and texting services for a flat rate and boasts a robust network that reaches most of the contiguous U.S. It’s one of the few wireless carriers in the U.S. to refund you for the data you don’t use, meaning if you churn through 7.5GB of data in one month on a 10GB plan, you are credited the remaining 2.5GB. It also offers an unlimited data plan, which doesn’t offer the same pay-as-you-go setup, but might be better for those that use a lot of data.

Fi is also unique because its network relies on a combination of U.S. Cellular, T-Mobile, and Sprint for coverage, and compatible phones switch between the three depending on network congestion and signal strength. The carrier also offers support for RCS Chat, meaning customers will be able to send larger image and video files when texting, as well as premium messaging features like read receipts, typing indicators, and more. Best of all, unlocked phones that work on T-Mobile’s 5G network can also connect to 5G over Google Fi.

It’s easy to sign up for Google Fi too. Not only can you sign up through the Google Fi website , but now you can also head to Best Buy and get a SIM card off the shelf. The downside to that, however, is that you’ll pay $10 for the Best Buy SIM cards. When you sign up online, Google will ship the SIM card to you for free. You can also port your phone number from the existing service you use, rather than having to use a new one.

Importantly, Google Fi also has 5G support, and you can check your 5G coverage using Google Fi’s 5G coverage map . It uses T-Mobile’s 5G network, so make sure your phone supports that network. You can find a list of compatible models on Google Fi’s FAQ .

Google offers two plans as part of Google Fi: An Unlimited plan and a “Flexible” plan. The Flexible plan is Google Fi’s traditional plan, allowing users to pay for the amount of data they use at the end of the month. The new Unlimited plan, however, is probably better for those that use a lot of data each month and don’t want to have to worry about limiting their use.

Google Fi Unlimited

Google Fi has joined the ranks of carriers offering unlimited data plans, which is good news for those that use a lot of data each month. Here’s a breakdown of the costs associated with Google Fi’s unlimited data plans.

The Google Fi Unlimited Plan offers unlimited data, but like any unlimited data plan these days, there is some fine print. For example, you’ll get high-speed data for 22GB, but after you use up that allotment, your speed may be throttled. Not only that, but Google says video may stream at 480p. You can also opt to pay $10 per GB of data you use beyond the limit.

Still, as with other Google Fi plans, there are some great perks — especially for those who travel a lot. The Google Fi Unlimited plan offers free data and texting while traveling, and free calls to 50+ countries and territories . In other words, you’ll be able to just continue using your data the same way you otherwise would. There is a fee for international calling outside of those allowed territories though, and calls to those countries will cost you 1¢ per minute.

With the Unlimited plan, Google will also bundle a Google One subscription with 100GB of storage for each person on your plan. It’s not a huge saving, but it could be handy for those already using Google Drive.

Recommendations:

• Google Fi’s Unlimited plan is perfect for those who don’t want to have to worry about their data use during the month, or who plan to use a lot of data.
• The price of the Unlimited plan is pretty much on par with other carriers — and even cheaper in many cases — so it’s a solid option for heavy data users.

The perks of Google Fi Unlimited:

• Relatively inexpensive
• Good coverage
• Excellent international coverage

The downsides of Google Fi Unlimited:

• 480p video streaming
• Google One subscription not worthwhile if you’re already using another cloud storage service

Google Fi Flexible plan

If you don’t use all that much data or like the idea of only paying for the data that you use, then the Google Fi Flexible plan may be the way to go. Pricing for the Google Fi Flexible plan can be found below.

But while Google Fi’s Flexible plan isn’t the cheapest, it comes with a lot of perks. Pricing starts at a flat $20 per month for unlimited calls and texting and $10 for 1GB of data, but money for unused data is credited back to the user’s account. Overages result in a charge of $10 per GB used. Google Fi also doesn’t levy a fee on mobile hot spots — data used while tethering is deducted from a user’s monthly allotment. In terms of pricing, Google Fi’s Flexible plan definitely isn’t the cheapest prepaid plan on the block. Republic Wireless , for example, offers talk, text, and up to 5GB of 4G LTE data for $40 per month — $30 per month cheaper than the equivalent Google Fi plan. Cricket Wireless’ $55 plan has unlimited talk, text, and data. FreedomPop’s 5GB tier starts at $35 per month.

Another perk is “ Bill Protection ,” which gives you unlimited data for $80 (if you only have one line). That’s because Google will no longer charge for more than 6GB of data — so if you use 10GB, you will still only be paying for 6GB. The caveat is that Google says users might experience slower speeds after 15GB of data. Bill Protection kicks in at different levels for group plans — and you can see where here . You should also be aware that the 6GB cap is for one-person plans. The cap increases to 10GB for two people, 12GB for three users, and 14GB for four people. Five- and six-person plans are capped at 16GB and 18GB, respectively.

Fi’s Group Plans let users add other people to their subscription for an additional $15 per user per month. Group Plans let plan managers view data usage by each member, set data notifications, add monthly allowances, and pause members’ data usage. A more recent feature, Group Repay, automatically calculates each of the members’ shares of the monthly bill and allows payments in fixed amounts based on an individual’s total usage, or only for data usage above the standard allotment.

Fi subscribers can use 4G LTE data in more than 135 countries around the world, including Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, and Turkey (see Google  Fi’s support page for the full list of supported carriers and countries). International data costs the same rate as Google Fi data in the U.S., and text messaging is free. Calls start at 20 cents per minute.

• Google Fi’s Flexible plan can be a good option for those who don’t use a lot of data but still want the option to use a lot down the line. If you consistently use more than 6GB of data, then the Unlimited plan data plan might be better for you.

The perks of Google Fi Flexible:

• Strong service in rural areas
• Savings for light data users
• High-speed international data at no extra charge
• Tethering at no extra charge
• Bill Protection caps your bill

The downsides of Google Fi Flexible:

• Pricier plans than T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon, and some MVNOs, depending on the data allotment

Since Google Fi’s network-switching technology requires special software and wireless radios, you’ll get the full experience with a phone that’s designed for the service. Google Fi-compatible phones also take advantage of Wi-Fi Assistant , a background service that automatically connects to “more than a million” public hotspots. It’s a seamless transition between the networks — calls aren’t interrupted when the phone switches from cellular to Wi-Fi — and the connection is secured through a virtual private network that routes traffic through Google’s servers.

Google Fi phones are designated as “designed for Fi.” They all come with support for calling, texting, and data over multiple 4G LTE networks, automatic connection to Wi-Fi hotspots, international roaming, and support for Fi VPN. You can find the full list of supported devices below:

If you use an iPhone or Android smartphone that’s not listed above, you’ll still have the same data coverage (including international coverage) and access to the same group plans. These phones just won’t get the network switching technology (so you’ll be stuck on one network, specifically T-Mobile), and there is no access to the Fi VPN to secure your connection. You’ll still be able to see members on your plan and data usage — whether on the iOS or Android app — and have access to 24/7 customer support and more. It should be noted visual voicemail is not supported on the iOS app at the moment.

Google Fi works with more than just smartphones, but it’s not quite the same experience. A data-only SIM that lacks calling and texting features works on select iPad models and Android tablets; Google Fi subscribers can add up to nine data-only SIMs to a single plan.

• Visit the Google Fi website.
• Enter the information about your current plan.
• Insert the SIM card (devices like the Pixel 2 and later don’t need to perform this step as they can use an eSIM).
• Set up your phone like you would on any new device.
• Check the status of your transfer on the Google Fi app or the official website.
• Look for a notification to alert you of the transfer process completing.
• Wait for a while until all features are fully functional and you’re ready to use Google Fi.

The fifth generation of mobile networks is coming, and many manufacturers are hyping up their upcoming 5G-enabled phones . But all of that means nothing if the networks aren’t also capable of putting out a 5G signal for those phones.

Google Fi customers may have been worried their network would take a while to get access to the fifth-generation mobile network, but Google Fi 5G is upon us. Sprint has its 5G network up and running in nine major U.S. cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. The service works with some of today’s most popular phones, including Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G and the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren. But since they’re not designed for Google Fi, they won’t offer network-swapping.

Google Fi also offers parents the option of managing their kids’ data usage, and with the Family Link app , you can manage the content that your children see — at least insofar as their apps are concerned. You can set some ground rules for your children — whether they’re younger or teenagers — by limiting screen time, or locking your children’s phones when it’s bedtime, homework time, or mealtime. Parents can also set filters in Chrome, search, and other Google services to protect their children from online dangers and encourage them to explore and learn about the internet in a safe way.

You can not only manage the apps they use, but you can also view your children’s online activity to spark conversations about what’s appropriate for them and what’s not. With location services, you can even see where your child is when they’re out and about.

Google Fi compatible smartphones are no longer confined to the most expensive flagships, but there are still a few things you can do to help bring costs down. If you trade in your current cell phone, you could receive a hefty amount of credit at the Google store. Users also have an option to opt for the monthly financial installment plan with 0% interest. That allows users the chance to pay back the Google Fi service for up to 24 months. If at any point in those two years, you’re able to pay off the remaining balance for your Google Fi plan, you can do so without repercussion.

At the moment Google is offering the excellent Pixel 4a at just $15/month, with device protection and an upgrade after two years. That’s a strong deal, and one worth looking into if you want a good phone with all of Google Fi’s features.

Android 13 has been available for Android phones since late 2022, and it's a pretty minor update from Google. Well, we say minor, but that's only in comparison to the positively gargantuan number of changes that were in Android 12 — and in light of Google's policy of trickling out improvements to Android apps over the course of a year as soon as they're ready. Android 13 is more of a tune-up to the engine that powers your phone than anything else. But it's still one worth getting excited for.

With network coverage provided primarily by T-Mobile, Google's mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Google Fi Wireless, is a low-cost alternative to big budget carriers that offers one of the best cheap cell phone plans available for international use. 

While phones " Designed for Fi " will have better coverage on Google Fi Wireless, most phones will be compatible with the service — albeit sacrificing some functionality and perks for the price, especially in comparison with "Designed for Fi" phones like the Google Pixel series and select other Android phones.

I tested Google Fi's service, coverage, and data reliability during a week in New York City to see whether making the switch is worth it. Google Fi has some significant benefits, but depending on your needs it might not be right for you. Here's a breakdown of the plans, their prices, and their perks to see if Fi will work for your lifestyle.

The Flexible plan at Google Fi Wireless includes international data for the same price as domestic data, along with free international texting and international calling at an affordable rate.

Google Fi offers three no-contract plans, each including hotspot capabilities, VPN (virtual private network) usage, and select smart watch integration. 

The plans are structured to encourage users to shell out for the $65 per month Unlimited Plus plan , which offers additional benefits like Google One storage and a free year of YouTube Premium for free with the plan, but customers looking to save their money can turn to the Flexible plan that offers pay-what-you-use data and some of the same baseline benefits. 

The middle ground here is in the Simply Unlimited plan , which has select benefits featured in the Unlimited Plus plan at a price point more geared toward families that use a lot of data on multiple lines.

Here is the cost and benefits breakdown of each of Google Fi's three plans:

*All plans revert to slower data speeds after a certain amount of monthly high-speed data usage. For Simply Unlimited, data speeds slow after 35GB of high-speed data are used. For Unlimited Plus, the threshold is at 50GB. Flexible plan members will experience data speeds slowing after 15GB of data are used.

**Hotspot data is not priced differently from the rest of your high-speed data on a Flexible plan, and will still cost $10 per GB.

With the Flexible plan , you only pay for the data you use — rounded to the nearest 0.1GB at $10 per GB — and if you go over a certain amount of data in a month you don't have to pay extra for any additional data used in that month. 

This is thanks to Google Fi's Bill Protection feature, and it's a huge selling point for their lowest-price plan. That said, you can still rack up a maximum monthly bill of $80 as a single user on the plan (if you use 6GB or more of data in a month), and more as the number of lines on your plan increases. 

The Flexible plan is also ideal for international travelers, who are often saddled with roaming fees when using high speed data while abroad, as your data price doesn't change when you use data overseas. 

The below table outlines the price adjustments as you add lines to a Flexible plan with Fi:

*Your data level adjusts depending on the number of lines in your plan, and all users on the plan draw from the same pool of data. Any data used after you meet the data level is free.

The Flexible plan is perfect for the traveler or the little-to-no-data-user. As you add lines to the plan, however, it starts to make less and less sense to keep this plan rather than switch to one of the unlimited plans (or frankly a larger carrier with more coverage and benefits), especially when you consider that the data pool is shared between phone lines. 

With six members on a Flexible phone plan your monthly bill could be as high as $275 if all lines combined use more than 18GB of data, which definitely defeats the purpose of having a low-cost plan. If you have multiple lines or use a lot of data, the Simply Unlimited or Unlimited Plus plans will be more cost-effective at the end of the day, but low data users will certainly save with Flexible.

Simply Unlimited

Simply Unlimited is Google Fi's middle-tier plan, priced at $50 per month for a single line and boasting unlimited data with 5GB of dedicated hotspot data as its major selling points. This plan is geared toward individuals who use a lot of data, so data speeds aren't capped until you hit 35GB of data in a month. 

This plan is a much better option than Flexible for someone who uses a lot of data in a month and wants to avoid a steep bill just in case. At the higher monthly price point, however, it's more comparable with unlimited data plans from other MVNOs, like Mint Mobile or Visible by Verizon, which both offer unlimited plans for $40 or less per month. 

Unlimited Plus

Unlimited Plus is Google Fi's highest-priced plan, and it includes perks along with your wireless service. When you sign up for an Unlimited Plus plan, you'll get a year of YouTube Premium included for free as well as 100GB of Google One storage. If you already use Google One, using Fi will give you a $1.99 discount on your bill each month, which equates to the price of the 100 free GB you'd get if you were a new user. 

Like the Simply Unlimited plan, Unlimited Plus isn't truly unlimited — you'll get high-speed data access until you pass a threshold of 50GB in a month, after which your data speeds will slow down due to deprioritization. This is a tradeoff for the low prices you get with MVNOs, particularly in congested areas, where the main carrier will prioritize their premium-paying customers in terms of data speeds. Depending on your location this may or may not affect your experience; however, in urban areas you'll be more likely to have a lot of network traffic than if you live in a less densely populated area.

As with any mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Google Fi uses a larger carrier's cellular network to provide most of their coverage. Google Fi uses T-Mobile, with supplementation from other networks to boost signal and connectivity in areas where T-Mobile is more sparse in its coverage.

Google Fi offers a coverage map tool on their site where you can check to see if you're in the areas covered by 5G, 4G, or extended coverage, which largely overlaps with T-Mobile's coverage map. 

The quality of your network connection will depend on the type of phone you have — as phones "Designed for Fi" will have further reach than those that aren't. If you have a phone that's "Designed for Fi" according to this list , you'll have access to T-Mobile's baseline coverage network and additional cellular towers provided by US Cellular. Your phone will switch on its own between these hotspots and a 5G or 4G connection when applicable, extending your coverage beyond the basics provided by T-Mobile.

This may or may not make a difference in your area — for example, in my testing I used a "Designed for Fi" phone, but since I performed all my testing in network-heavy New York City I was well-covered everywhere I went with a 5G or 4G connection. 

If you have a device that is compatible with Google Fi but that isn't " Designed for Fi ," you won't get the additional coverage provided by other networks. This essentially leaves you with T-Mobile coverage.

In my own testing, I didn't have much issue with my Google Fi plan, and my usage of it was pretty seamless. I tested the Flexible plan for just one week, so nowhere near enough time to judge the effects of data deprioritization, which would have definitely adjusted my experience. I only used about 1 full GB of data, and my data speeds would have been capped after I used 15GB. 

Again, with the Flexible Plan's Bill Protection feature, I wouldn't have to pay for any data used after 6GB. Doing the math, as a heavy data user, I would have likely paid $40 or more per month for the Flexible Plan, making it about as much cost-wise as if I had chosen an unlimited plan from somewhere like Visible or Mint Mobile .

I tested some of the apps that people most frequently use on their phones these days — Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok — as well as the basics of phone calls, video calls, and texts. As I could have expected, social media apps had a bit of loading time between videos or posts when my service was less than 4 or 5 bars of 4G LTE or 5G. In areas where I was covered and had good service, however, I had no issues with buffering when watching video, and downloads were smooth. I noticed poor video call quality, but that was the only snag I encountered. 

It's also important to note that I was using a " Designed for Fi " phone, which in theory added to the plan's performance. As a general rule, it's safe to say that if you live in an area covered by T-Mobile, you'll be good to go with Google Fi, though you'll get more comprehensive coverage with a "Designed for Fi" device.

When you order your Google Fi SIM card, you'll receive an envelope that includes the SIM as well as a few setup instructions. 

You'll be guided to download the Google Fi app to manage your plan, and the packet gives step-by-step instructions on how to insert your new SIM card and switch to a new service. There's a tucked-in insert specifically for iPhone users as well, who have a few additional instructions for setup. 

The packet is helpful and informative, which bodes well as a new user. Once your SIM is installed, the app has walkthrough instructions on what you'll need to do if you want to keep your old phone number or get a new one through Fi.

Google Fi's app offers 24/7 customer support over the phone as well as through chat and email. The resources provided in the app are pretty standard, and don't necessarily deviate from what you might expect to be available as a customer, but the UX is quite good and easily navigable.

I'd argue that the Bill Protection feature on the Flexible Plan is as good as any customer support service, however, as it allows you to set an alert for when you use a certain amount of data to avoid paying more than you can afford. It's a smart addition, especially for a plan that can rack up in price with multiple lines.

Frequent international travelers may find the most benefit from Google Fi Wireless , as the service's international coverage options are extensive and adjustments are low-cost. 

If you already own a Google Pixel phone (or any " Designed for Fi " phone), the smart switching between T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Google's hotspot network will likely significantly supplement your coverage area. Low monthly data users will also like Google Fi, as the Flexible plan will cost far less each month than either of the service's unlimited data plans (let alone a major carrier's baseline data plans).

If you use a lot of data or have multiple lines, your Google Fi bill could increase quickly, however. Other MVNOs like Mint Mobile and Visible Wireless have unlimited data options that outperform Fi in terms of price.

What networks does Google Fi Wireless use?

Google Fi Wireless uses T-Mobile's network to provide its base coverage and an extended " network of networks " that includes US Cellular to provide further coverage for certain phones.

If your phone is compatible, it will switch between network providers automatically depending on which service will provide the best coverage in your area. This is only available for phones " Designed for Fi ," however, which includes Google Pixel phones as well as many Android models. 

Does Google Fi Wireless work with an iPhone?

While you can use just about any phone with Google Fi, iPhones are tricky. Google Fi is optimized for Google Pixel phones and select other Android models certified as "Designed for Fi," meaning that they'll have certain benefits that non-"Designed for Fi" phones will not.

This is significant in terms of coverage, as " Designed for Fi " phones will have access to the full range of Google Fi's network sources, including T-Mobile cell towers, US Cellular towers, and a range of hotspots, but iPhones and non-"Designed for Fi" phones will be restricted to just T-Mobile coverage. 

Does Google Fi Wireless work internationally?

Yes, each of Google Fi's three plans have international stipulations: The Flexible plan includes unchanged data rates between domestic and international use in over 200 countries; the Unlimited Plus plan includes data in over 200 countries at no additional monthly cost; and the Simply Unlimited plan includes calls to Mexico and Canada at no additional cost.

Is Google Fi Wireless actually unlimited?

"Unlimited" data is mostly just a reference to a fixed price per month for access to a certain amount of high-speed data. With each of the two unlimited data plans offered by Google Fi, you can use high-speed data up to a certain data cap before your data speeds will slow down due to deprioritization.

This doesn't affect how much data you can use, it just affects the speed. With the Simply Unlimited plan , your data speeds will be capped after you use 35GB of high-speed data, and with the Unlimited Plus plan your data speeds will be capped after 50GB.

Google, Inc., most known for its search engine, has expanded into a variety of Internet-related services from cloud computing to advertising. The company ventured into the telecommunications space by launching Google Fi (called Project Fi at the time) in 2015. Google Fi is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service that provides calls, short message service (SMS), which is also known as text messaging, and mobile broadband using cellular networks and Wi-Fi. As an MVNO, Google Fi operates on T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular networks but is not owned by those companies. Currently, Google Fi only serves customers in the United States.

Google Fi Simply Unlimited Cell Phone Plan Review

Google Fi is best experienced on an Android device, and select Android devices are “designed for Fi,” which offers additional coverage benefits. With 100 GB of storage space on Google One included with the Unlimited Plus plan – if you’re already using Google services and have an Android phone, Google Fi makes a lot of sense.

However, Google Fi’s service does have some weaknesses compared to other plans elsewhere. Google Fi will throttle your data speeds after 15 GB on its entry-level Flexible plans, and 22 GB for its Unlimited plan. Compare this to other carriers like T-Mobile , Verizon , or Mint Mobile , which all offer 50 GB of unthrottled data.

You may have a bit of difficulty getting an iPhone to work on Google Fi. Google Fi works with phones running iOS 12 and higher. However, you won’t have access to 5G when using the iPhone series 12 or 13. The carrier does offer support to get your iPhone working with the service. Also, phones from CDMA carriers like Verizon or old Sprint phones will not work, since Google Fi uses T-Mobile’s GSM network.

Although it is called the Unlimited plan and does include unlimited calling, texting, and data, Google Fi will begin to throttle heavy data users at 22GB of data when towers are busy. 5G is available for phones that are “designed for Fi.”

The standard Unlimited plan doesn’t include hotspot usage. The Unlimited Plus plan provides hotspot usage and offers 100 GB of Google One storage. All plans offer 24/7 customer support, and there are no contracts or activation fees.

Google Fi Optional Features

International services.

International Service is available for $10 per GB for data on the Flexible Plan and includes texting and calling while traveling outside the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. There is no additional charge for international data usage in the Unlimited Plus plan. Calls and texts to and from Canada and Mexico are included in all plans. Unlimited Plus customers can also call up to 50 countries as a part of their plan.

Cloud Storage

100 GB of Google One storage is included at no additional charge with the Unlimited Plus Plan. If you're already a Google One member, Google Fi will reduce your Unlimited plan’s bill by $1.99 per month, which is the cost of 100 GB of Google One storage if you purchased it separately.

Family Features

If your child uses an Android phone, you can set up rules for them using Google Family Link. Parents can keep an eye on their children’s screen time, remotely lock their device, and locate your child with GPS if they are carrying their phone. Parents can also set a limit on the amount of data family members use in their plan, regardless of phone model.

Data Add-ons

For the unlimited plans, there is no limit to the amount of data you can use; however, as we’ve noted previously, Google Fi does throttle data on an as-needed basis during times of heavy network use. For those on the Flexible plan, data is charged at $10 per GB.

To prevent hefty overage charges, Google Fi has a feature called Bill Protection. Bill Protection works by stopping data charges after a certain level. For one line plans, it’s 6 GB and for two lines 10 GB, increasing by 2 GB up to 18 GB for six lines. Any data after this is free, although it’s subject to a lower data cap of 15GB.

Where Is Google Fi 5G Available?

Coverage is dependent on 5G availability in your area, but due to its many networks, the Google Fi plans have vast 5G coverage. Customers will have 4G LTE service when 5G is unavailable.

Google Fi vs. the Competition

Google Fi uses T-Mobile’s network for a portion of its coverage, so you won’t notice much of a difference there. Google Fi also uses US Cellular towers too, which gives Google Fi better coverage where there are towers available from both carriers. Phones “designed for Fi” can switch between these towers automatically. If you bring a phone that isn’t “designed for Fi,” you’re only limited to 5G coverage from T-Mobile.

Plans from either carrier are similar with some key differences. While Google Fi offers international data and texting on its cheapest plans, you must be on either the more expensive Magenta or Magenta MAX plans to use your phone abroad with T-Mobile. T-Mobile’s data caps on full speed data are also much higher: 50 GB for the entry-level Essentials plan, and 100 GB in either Magenta or Magenta MAX.

We’d recommend heavy data users choose T-Mobile instead. However, if you live/work in an area where US Cellular has 5G towers, primarily in the Midwest near Chicago westward, you may benefit from better 5G service with a phone with Fi’s network-switching technology.

Google Fi vs. Mint Mobile

Like Google Fi, Mint Mobile uses T-Mobile towers for its network. However, Mint Mobile does not have any other network partners, so Google Fi’s coverage may be a bit better, especially in the Midwest, where Google Fi’s other partner, US Cellular, is based.

However, Mint Mobile’s prepaid plans are far cheaper for unlimited data. At $90 for three months of data or $30 per month, it’s half the cost of Google Fi. Mint Mobile also gives you more data – 35 GB – before the network throttles your speed during busy times.

However, if you use Google services heavily, Google Fi offers the benefit of cloud storage and a better network. You’ll find that Google provides a better overall network for these Google Fi-optimized phones: the Google Pixel, Moto G7, Moto G6, LG G7 ThinQ, LG V35 ThinQ, and Android One Moto X4.

Getting a Google Fi plan is an easy process done completely online. Visit the Google Fi website to sign up and select the plan and number of phone lines that work best for you.

It’s important to note that group plan owners must be at least 18 years old. As long as the group plan owner is above the legal age, those under 18 can still join the account.

To make matters easier, Google Fi allows you to bring your current phone number with you if your previous carrier allows it. Phone number transfer will start once you activate service on your phone, and most transfers take less than 15 minutes.

Due to Google Fi’s contract-free plans, customers won’t receive a trial period. However, plans are paid monthly with no long-term commitments, so canceling is simple.

Google Fi currently doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee to customers. If you’re unsure whether Google Fi will work for you and have a number you’d like to bring to Google Fi, you can choose to port the number later after testing out the service.

One of the key benefits of Google Fi is that it’s free of a major commitment. Customers can terminate their plan at any time and face no termination fees – a huge plus when you compare many other carrier plans. Follow these steps to cancel your Google Fi service:

• Go to the Google Fi website and choose Customer Support.
• On the Customer Support page click the drop-down menu under “Account.”
• Choose “Pause or cancel service.”
• If you’re a participant in a group plan, before beginning the cancellation process you must ask the Google Fi group owner or a group manager to remove you from the group. If this applies to you, you can choose the “remove from group” option at this step.
• Next click “Cancel your Google Fi service.” If you don’t want to cancel for good, you can choose to stop your service temporarily.
• If your cell phone is financed with Google Fi you’ll be charged the remaining balance for the device when you cancel your account.

Wi-Fi 6 is a new Wi-Fi standard, with many Wi-Fi 6-ready devices already available in the market. Wi-Fi 6 allows for 30% faster speeds on Wi-Fi 6-enabled devices (such as phones, laptops, and tablets), and for more devices on a single network without slowing down Wi-Fi speeds. Wi-Fi 6 also improves battery life and provides greater security with WPA3.

What is a static IP Address?

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique number assigned to each computer on a network. Just as a street address determines where a letter should be delivered, an IP address identifies computers on the Internet. If your computer is hosting a web server, its IP address is what identifies it to the rest of the internet.

A computer on the internet can have a static IP address, which means it stays the same over time, or a dynamic IP address, which means the address can change over time.

If you sign up for multiple static IPs with your Google Fiber service, you must use your own router .

When might I need a static IP address?

The vast majority of internet features work without static IPs, including web browsing, email sending and receiving, video streaming, and voice over IP (VoIP). However, you might need static IPs if one or more of these scenarios applies to you: - You maintain your own web server or other internet server, such as an email server, that requires users to connect from the internet. - You have external devices or services that must connect to your network via IP address (for example, 74.125.224.72) rather than by name (for example, google.com). - You use a VPN or other service to remotely connect to computers in your business.

In many cases, you can host a server on an internet connection without static IPs by using Dynamic DNS. With Dynamic DNS, when your IP address changes, your DNS entry is automatically updated with your new IP address. The Google Fiber Network Box includes support for Dynamic DNS, which you can configure for your network.

If you aren't sure whether you need static IPs, consult with your IT expert. You can add or remove static IPs from your account, even after your service starts.

What speed is right for my business?

We believe today’s businesses deserve gigabit speeds. While our Business 1 Gig plan will likely meet the needs of most businesses, businesses who do substantial downloading, uploading, or have a high number of users (50+) may find our Business 2 Gig plan to be a better option. Business 2 Gig also includes a single static IP assignment and up two Wi-Fi mesh extenders, which can add Wi-Fi coverage for larger offices.

Can I use my own router? (existing)

Yes. If you’re using your own router, please make sure that it fits these recommended specifications . Please note that the Google Fiber support team will not be able to support routers manufactured by third parties.

If you choose to add multiple static IPs to your service, you must use your own router. If you choose to add 1 or no static IPs, you can choose to use your own router, but it is not necessary. Will my current VoIP be supported with Google Fiber?

Fiber optic networks typically offer lower latency than copper networks. Lower latency generally means smoother VoIP and video calls. G oogle Fi Wireless has been a favorite among users since its release in 2016. Running on T-Mobile's nationwide network means that this mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) is widely available across the country and comes with an assortment of perks. From unlimited high-speed data to the ability to make international calls at an affordable rate to near-effortless plan switching options, there's a lot to like about this versatile service. 

Over the years, Google Fi has evolved to fit more lifestyles and expand its capabilities, from adding end-to-end encryption to calls to  supporting iPhones running on 5G . The same can also be said about its plan options. In recent years, the company has cut down the cost of many of its plans while adding more data and perks, much to the delight of users. If you've ever considered making the switch to Google Fi, there hasn't been a better time to do it. 

However, not all plans are created equal in the case of Google Fi. It's a good idea to invest some time in understanding what each option offers to ensure it will fit your lifestyle. Here's what to keep in mind with each Google Fi plan when picking the one that's right for you.

What To Know About The Flexible Plan

First up is Google Fi's Flexible Plan. This plan starts at a prepaid base fee of $20 a month. Every other line added incurs an additional $15, going up to $95 a month for six lines. Each option also comes with an additional $10 per GB fee. Once your data level is reached, all your data is free. After 15GB is used per member, however, you'll notice your data speed slows down to 256 kbps. This setup essentially works with and adapts to your data usage, eliminating the need to pay for excess data.  

The plan allows for unlimited calls and texts with no fee for any North American calls. For international calls, Google Fi offers calling rates ranging from a few cents to up to $7.25 per minute, depending on where your call is going. It's also worth noting that iPhone users with a Flexible plan are not able to utilize Wi-Fi hotspots or tethering while venturing outside of the United States. 

Ultimately, if your data needs aren't that extreme, this plan is a suitable choice. But for those who utilize more than a few gigabytes every month, there are better and more affordable options.

What To Know About The Simply Unlimited Plan

Google Fi's Simply Unlimited Plan comes with its fair share of advantages. The plan starts at $50 per month for a single line, but if you have two or three lines, the cost goes down to $40 and $30 per line, respectively. For plans with four or more lines, the price decreases to $25 per line. In other words, four lines only cost a total of $100 per month or $25 per line. Each line comes with 35 GB of data, which slows down to 256 kbps once that cap is hit. Additionally, each user gets 5 GB of Wi-Fi hotspot tethering. 

The major downside with Simply Unlimited compared to other plans is where it can be used. While you can make calls to other countries from the United States for varying fees, those with this plan are unable to utilize call, text, or data services outside of the US, Canada, or Mexico. 

Given how well-liked Google Fi is by travelers, the Simply Unlimited plan is somewhat lacking. However, for families that don't travel much out of the country and want a solid amount of data coverage, it's hard to beat the cost benefits that come with this option. 

What To Know About The Unlimited Plus Plan

Last but not least is Google Fi's Unlimited Plus plan. Slightly more expensive than Simply Unlimited, this plan begins at a base cost of $65 per line and goes down in price with each additional line, going from $55 per line for two users, $45 for three, and $40 per line for four or more. 

The unlimited part of its name isn't just for show. Google Fi's limitless call, text, and data capabilities are pushed to the max here, with the ability to text and use data in more than 200 different countries and regions. Likewise, you can make phone calls from the United States to over 50 countries entirely free of charge. Along with this, users are also treated to increased data with 50 GB per person and 100 GB of Google One storage for free. Additionally, each user gets six free months of YouTube Premium once activated from your account.  

The only downside worth noting is that while the plan offers free full-speed hotspot tethering, it won't work for iPhone users traveling outside of the United States. Nevertheless, the pros outweigh the cons of Unlimited Plus. If you have a family, use a lot of data, or travel outside of the US often, this is your best bet when it comes to Google Fi plans.

Picking The Right Google Fi Plan

As with other service providers, what constitutes the best Google Fi plan depends entirely on your lifestyle and needs. If you don't travel outside the country often or require heavy data usage, Flexible or Simply Unlimited make suitable options. On the other end of the spectrum, for those who venture internationally on a regular basis or have a family with extensive data needs, it's worth investing in an Unlimited Plus plan. If you already have a Google Fi plan and are thinking about changing it, keep these factors in mind.

Your new plan will take place at the start of your next monthly bill cycle. This is the case for every Google Fi switch unless you're going from Simply Unlimited to Unlimited Plus, which will take place immediately. You may also notice that if you go from the flexible plan to an unlimited one, your bill will be higher than normal. 

Given that Flexible plan costs are determined by the amount of data used, Google will charge you for your usage from the previous month and add that to the prepay amount for your unlimited bill. For those with group plans, the group owner decides what plan is used, which goes into effect for all others using the service.

Reliable mobile networks are a necessity, just as much as a reliable water supply. While the big three carriers (Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile) cover many users, sometimes the prices aren't great, which is where MVNOs come in . Why are prepaid phone plans cheaper than postpaid ones?

MVNOs lease carrier services from one or more of the major carriers. Google FI relies on T-Mobile's 5G network . Of course, Fi offers all kinds of perks including end-to-end encryption and spam filtering to entice potential customers.

Google Fi is Google's take on a mobile carrier, launched under the name Project Fi in 2016 . At the time, phones connecting to data through Fi automatically switched between three networks — T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular — depending on which offered the highest-quality connection in a given area.

T-Mobile acquired Sprint in 2020, leaving Fi to bounce between data supplied by T-Mobile and US Cellular. In early 2023, Google dropped US Cellular as an "official" network , meaning Google Fi subscribers use T-Mobile's network almost exclusively. Google notes that Fi-certified phones still connect to US Cellular when T-Mobile isn't an option. It will be T-Mobile anywhere both are available, even if US Cellular provides a faster connection.

Google Fi sells a range of devices certified for use on its network, though that doesn't mean as much as it used to. Most unlocked phones compatible with T-Mobile work on Fi, including the iPhone 15 series. Fi-certified devices can automatically switch to US Cellular in the rare instance where it may have connectivity, but T-Mobile does not.

Google Fi provides talk, text, and data on its plans in the US, Canada, and Mexico. It also offers affordable international calling, plus no-additional-charge LTE or 5G coverage on its Unlimited Plus plan in more than 200 countries and territories on supported phones. With such a large global footprint, you'll want to check out Fi's international roaming details to confirm coverage and avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Google Fi has three plans: Flexible, Simply Unlimited, and Unlimited Plus. On the Flexible plan, you pay $17 per line for unlimited talk and text. Data costs $10 per GB. Taxes and fees are tacked on to your monthly bill. You can share data with other people on your account and are also on the Flexible plan.

The other two plans are variations on an unlimited data plan. Both plans offer unlimited talk, text, and data in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Unlimited Plus offers free calls to more than fifty countries in addition to the US, Canada, and Mexico. Unlimited Plus also includes 100GB of Google One storage for each line. However, regular Unlimited plan pricing has risen for lines with four or more users, lessening the price difference between Unlimited Plus.

All plans include hotspot tethering, which is charged differently depending on your plan. The Flexible plan lets you use the data you're paying $10 per GB for, the Simply Unlimited Plan allows for 5GB per month, and the Unlimited Plus Plan offers 50GB for tethering.

The Flexible and Unlimited Plus plans allow for data-only SIM cards for tablets and other compatible devices. All plans let you add your LTE-compatible Pixel Watch (either generation) or Galaxy Watch (5- or 6-series watches) for no additional charge. If you use the Flexible or Unlimited Plus plan with a phone, you get high-speed data and text messages while traveling internationally, as well as affordable cellular and free Wi-Fi calling to over 200 countries.

Flexible Plan subscribers may notice slower speeds if they use more than 15GB of data in a billing cycle. The Simply Unlimited Plan customers may slow when they exceed 35GB of data, and Unlimited Plus Plan customers may encounter slower data speeds once they hit 50GB in a monthly billing cycle.

If you own a compatible phone, you'll enjoy 5G speeds in dozens of countries . Google Fi also offers 4G coverage in over 200 countries. Google advises using Fi's pay-as-you-go Flexible plan or its higher-tier Unlimited Plus plan for travel outside North America. Simply Unlimited only guarantees access in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Google sweetens the deal for iPhone users. Google Fi's Flexible and Unlimited Plus plans offer international hotspot coverage in 200 countries and territories, including on Apple's devices. Fi also supports Wi-Fi calling on iPhones.

Here's a summary of the differences between pricing for these plans per line. Single-line plans are expensive, but Fi offers discounts for each additional line. For example, if you sign up for four lines on Unlimited Plus at $40 a pop, you'll pay $160 per month plus applicable taxes and fees.

Google Fi includes 24/7 online customer support and doesn't have contracts or activation fees. You can cancel your plan at any time with no additional fees, though you'll be liable for devices you financed through Fi.

Google Fi uses T-Mobile as its primary network, with US Cellular as a fallback in areas where T-Mobile is unavailable, so coverage is extensive. T-Mobile has a solid wall of sub-6GHz 5G coverage across the US and Band 71 for rural LTE coverage. Enter your address into Fi's coverage map to see what coverage is like in your area.

Only devices certified for use on Google Fi can access data in the lightest "Extended" areas of the map.

Google Fi has some neat features that set it apart from other carriers. The carrier emphasizes privacy and security, adding Google One VPN to its plans. There's also automatic end-to-end call encryption for Android devices when chatting with other Google Fi customers. Fi has a built-in spam call filtering feature, automatically stopping incoming calls identified as spam. Spam filtering, combined with Google's Pixel Call Assist suite , means you can avoid unwanted calls and text messages.

Google Fi has additional features that make managing multi-line accounts easier. In the Google Fi app, you can view a snapshot of the people on your plan, find out how much data each person uses, and create data alerts. If you have children on your account, you can block calls and texts from strangers, create a data usage budget, and set digital activity rules. Ground rules include content filters, screen time limits, app download approval, and device location tracking.

You can also make calls, send texts, and check your voicemails from your computer, even if your phone is turned off, though you can't use Google Messages' RCS features when your phone is turned off. You even get full data with supported smartwatches, like connectivity for the Pixel Watch that's free with the Simply Unlimited Plan.

Google Fi offers a large selection of smartphones from Google, Motorola, and Samsung on its site. You can bring your device if it's supported on Fi's network (T-Mobile).

The phones Google sells on the Fi site have the Designed for Fi designation, meaning the handsets use eSIMs and are optimized to take advantage of the network's unique architecture. They use auxiliary networks like US Cellular to get data when outside T-Mobile's network. Many of the best Android phones have this distinction and get the best out of Google Fi.

Google boasts a successful line of Pixel phones and plenty of other great mobile and smart hardware. Why not let it manage your mobile coverage? Google Fi is unique among prepared carriers, and it supports a jaw-dropping list of phones and in many ways feels more like a traditional carrier. If you want an alternative to the Big Three that’s all about flexibility, it just might be the way to go.

Google Fi’s plans fall into two basic categories, so we’ll cover them both in our breakdown. We’ll also touch on the long list of devices you can bring to the network from OEMs worldwide. Although Google Fi is an MVNO already, we’ll touch on a few of its top competitors to give you a bigger picture. Ready to try the carrier made by Google? Let’s get to it.

Which Fi Wireless plan is best for you?

There are now three Google Fi plans — two with unlimited data and another where you pay as you go. Each has its perks, but it’s up to you to decide which fits your needs. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you out:

• Flexible is perfect for those that don’t use much data. You pay just $20 monthly for unlimited talk and text, then $10 per every GB used. To keep your bill from getting too crazy, Google gives you free unlimited data after you’ve paid for 6GB — a bill total of $80 for one line. This plan is a bit of a hybrid between prepaid and postpaid, as you pay a monthly fee ahead, but the actual data is charged after the billing month ends. Have multiple lines? You can get discounted rates as low as $17 per line for 4  lines, though you pay the same $10 per GB for data.
• Simply Unlimited is perfect for families that use more than a few gigs of data. At $50 a month for one line, Simply Unlimited isn’t the cheapest plan when you consider it’s not truly unlimited. You get just 35GB of high-speed data; afterward, things slow down to just 256kbps until the next billing period. If you’re just one person, we don’t really recommend this plan . That said, families will see the rate drop down to just $30 for four lines, and most users don’t really use more than 35GB of data anyhow.
• Simply Unlimited Plus is best for frequent travelers who use a lot data. If you’re a frequent traveler, we recommend Plus over Simply Unlimited. It’s just $10 more for one line, yet you get 50GB of data, a Google One membership, and free texting and data in many countries across the globe. If you travel a lot, this is the way to go. There are also discounts that can bring it down to as little as $45 per line for four lines.

Which Fi Wireless plan do we recommend?

As we mentioned above, the best plan will depend on your use case. For those who use less than 3GB of data a month on a regular basis, Flexible will save you at least $10 over the Simply Unlimited plan. Unlike Simply Unlimited, you can use the data for hotspot access as well.

If you use more than 3GB regularly, Flexible isn’t worth it and can actually get more expensive than the other two at $80 a month for just 6GB of data. 

On the other hand, Simply Unlimited Plus is a better fit if you use more than 3GB of data a month and need hotspot access or if you travel frequently. For single-line users it’s only $10 more than the basic unlimited plan, though that gap goes up to $15 with more lines, interestingly.

Below we’ll take a closer look at all three plans and dive into what else sets them apart.

The most cost-effective option with Google Fi is the Flexible plan. This plan charges a base monthly service fee of up to $20. Additionally, you pay for the data you use per gigabyte. Once you reach a usage of 6GB in a month, data access is free for the remainder of that month, up to 15GB. This system effectively caps your monthly bill, ensuring you never pay more than a predetermined amount. The plan also includes full-speed hotspot access, giving you flexibility in how you use your data.

For international travelers, Fi is an excellent choice. The plan offers free texts, international calls starting at just one cent per minute, and data at the standard rate. In fact, if your travel is occasional, opting for the Flexible plan during your trips could be more economical than choosing an Unlimited Plan. Even after reaching the 6GB data cap, you can continue to use data without exceeding a monthly maximum of $80.

• Great for those who don’t use a lot of data regularly.
• Can use more data on occasion if you’re willing to pay the extra charge (up to a max of $80 a month total)
• Great for occasional travelers, as the $10 per GB rate applies internationally as well. And calling starts at just $.01 a minute. 
• There are no limits on video streaming quality. 
• Can get pricey if you regularly use a lot of data on this plan. 

Simply Unlimited

Google split its unlimited tier back in 2021, creating a more budget-friendly option for those staying in the US. The additional tier, named Simply Unlimited, provides unlimited talk, text, and data, along with free calls to Canada and Mexico. A significant advantage is that Simply Unlimited starts at $60 per month for a single user, offering savings compared to the fully unlimited plan.

With this plan, you’ll receive 35GB of high-speed data. However, it’s important to note that hotspot tethering is not included. Additionally, Simply Unlimited does not include a Google One membership, which might require an additional monthly expenditure.

• Great for those who use a lot of data.
• Free calls to Canada and Mexico.
• It limits video streaming to standard definition (480p).
• No international data or texts.
• No hotspot access at all. 

Unlimited Plus

If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing — at least, that’s the idea behind the Google Fi Unlimited Plus plan. Built for users who know they need it all, the top-tier plan adds plenty of extra goodies on top of unlimited talk, text, and data. Starting at $70 per person, you can take full advantage of a mobile hotspot connection and video streams at DVD quality (480p). The Unlimited plan includes a Google One membership with 100GB of cloud storage for free to make things even better.

Google Fi Unlimited is the better international option, too, as data usage is free along with texting. It’ll still slow down once you reach 50GB, but that’s more than most people use in a month. Mint Mobile

First is Mint Mobile , the only option on today’s list not owned by a larger carrier. Instead, it’s owned by Deadpool himself — Ryan Reynolds. Instead of snagging an extra fee for your SIM card, Mint will send you a versatile option that you can punch into any of three sizes. The lack of bonus perks and streaming options is a bummer, but Mint makes a great affordable option on the T-Mobile network.

Visible is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Verizon, which means you get a massive nationwide network without the costs often associated with Big Red. It keeps your plan options even easier than Google Fi because there’s only one. You’ll get unlimited talk, text, and data for $40 per month, which you can drop to $25 per month thanks to Party Pay.

Party Pay involves teaming up with as many other friends on the Visible network as you please. You’ll save $5 for each user you add, but all of you will pay separately. That means one late payer won’t drag down the others. Every time you refer a friend to the network, Visible will reward you with a month of service for just $5. Also, Visible will let you tap into hotspot access, and it’s finally added genuine international coverage for both Canada and Mexico.

Cricket Wireless

The last competitor, Cricket Wireless , relies on AT&T as an owned MVNO. Although it’s part of the AT&T umbrella, Cricket acts like its own network, offering various plans and add-ons to make the most of your service. The best — and most expensive — plan you can get is Cricket More, and it serves as the high-end unlimited option. For your money, you’ll get unlimited talk, text, and data, and 15GB of hotspot included.

Sticking to the More idea, you can use your plan in Canada and Mexico only if it’s less than half of your service. Cricket also allows you to add on even more hotspot access or add calling to individual international countries for a fee.

Best Google Fi phones

Traditionally only post-paid carriers offered special incentives like free phones or device financing, but there are a few prepaid options that do the same. Fi Wireless is one of those carriers! You’ll need to pass a soft credit check first, but monthly payment plans range from as little as $8 a month and as high as $50. The actual list of phones will change over time. Actually, it already does. Google offers discounts on both Flex, Simply Unlimited, and Unlimited Plus plan for up to six lines. For example, Simply Unlimited would cost just $20 per line for those with 4 to 6 lines, versus $50 for one  line.

Google’s Flex plan charges you $20 for talk and text, then $10 per gig. This could get out of hand fast, but Google saw that coming. Once you’ve used 6GB of data the rest is free. As for the unlimited plans? If you blow through your high-speed cap you’ll continue getting unlimited data at potentially slowed speeds.
