CLUBHOUSE, RAIPUR

The modern building abhorred superfluous surface decoration and induced the use of concrete, glass, and steel. With times, the architectural vocabulary in terms of form and function has been transforming, and while designing any built form, it has been mostly debated if form comes first or function. However, in today’s contemporary architecture, it is the form that follows function wherein dynamism of the latter is playing a vital role in creating cityscape for the new environment and spaces. One such building is a Club House in a Group housing project for Avinash Builders at Raipur. This form has set a benchmark in Contemporary Indian Architecture. Clubhouses have become a fad in the 21st century. Along with health care services provided at clubhouses, architects are progressively designing clubhouses as breakout spaces. The Club House in Avinash Capital Homes forms an iconic landmark structure on its own, owing to its fluid design. Nature was the inspiration in visualizing the iconic structure of the building. Raipur is surrounded by forests, waterfalls, mountains, and other natural geographic features that inspired the organic form. The design builds on the concept of the fluidity of water. The layout of the clubhouse moves away from rigid straight lines and instead explores a unique dimension of architecture. The façade of the clubhouse remains the most iconic feature of the building. It has interesting circular cut-outs that allow the penetration of natural sunlight thus reducing the use of artificial lighting systems in the daytime. The exterior façade seamlessly carves through the interior spaces maintaining its whimsical form and generating cave-like interiors. The clubhouse caters to the need of people from various age groups. It has all the modern facilities and equipped with the latest machines in the gymnasium, encouraging people to become health conscious. The main entrance of the clubhouse leads to the swimming pool. The concept here was to introduce a water feature at the sight of entrance creating a tranquil environment. The swimming pool is anthropometrically designed in a way to accommodate maximum people. Waterfront café has been introduced on a green carpet that seamlessly merges with the interior banquet. The banquet has been acoustically padded thereby reducing noise pollution in the vicinity. On the ground level, one can indulge in strenuous sports activities like squash, badminton, and lawn tennis. The club also has a health juice bar, where members of the society can also provide cooking classes. The yoga studio and gymnasium are located on the upper floor, in an attempt to isolate it from the bustling sounds of ground floor activities. It is sculpted with wooden floors to provide a clean and comfortable environment. Overlooking the swimming pool on one side, and the green lawns on the other, the yoga studio creates a perfectly balanced space. Our vision was to create an experience that unravels and gets richer each time for the user. The circulation is maximized on the upper level with each functional space opening into the corridor. Considering the fluidity of design in mind, the construction uses Ferrocement over wire mesh with 200 metal framework of a profile section arranged to support the mesh. The materials like Glass-reinforced concrete and Glass-reinforced gypsum have been selected to sculpt the clubhouse. The use of white color on the exterior bolsters the immaculateness of the built form. The surreal design of the clubhouse catches the fancy of every passer-by.

Responding to its geography, the building is composed of an organic freeform nestled between the hillside and lakeside. The architectural program leverages its location and proximity to the lake, and wraps into its location.  A freeform was adopted not only as a response to the geography but also to reflect the playfulness and relaxation that the environment will provide.

The curved planning is strategized to focus views within and outside the site. Keeping with the theme of one-with nature, the aqua blue shingles shimmers like the lake’s waters through the roofs’ clearstories, or heighten the visual experience by its shadow play and reflections under the roof overhangs, as if the Club is “floating in space”.

The Inspiration

The inspiration for the space comes from the form of the majestic peacock, which is the national bird of India. The design weaves in and out of the form of a fan, symbolized by a dancing peacock to achieve a carefully constructed connection to the natural environment.

A luxury space of relaxation which fosters community interactions.

Clubhouse for orchid petals condominium,, gurgaon, haryana.

Designed to house the cultural events, meetings, and recreational needs of a dense condominium gated complex, the Clubhouse is a three-storey building with a multi-layered rectangular plan that evolves around a double-height of the entrance atrium. To make a contrast with the busy building exterior and surroundings, we decided to make the interior and exterior palette monochromatic, making everything singular to remove the sense of weight and complexities of multiplicity of geometries. However, within this single color palette, we introduced a vivid variety of materiality and texture to express variation in space and atmosphere. Each room has a unique function, and each is given a different texture and pattern. We carefully cataloged multiple material options for all surfaces - floor, wall, ceiling, furniture - and coordinated them while considering the various scales and functions of each room.

Designed for fostering community interactions, the clubhouse is a relaxed luxury space with a rich and distinctly ‘Uptown’ feel. The 30,000 sqft Clubhouse is bounded on two sides by multistoried towers of commercial and residential typologies making it imperative to shade these structures and their dominating and interfering views. With a direct view facing other villas, the clubhouse thus only responds to the low-rise urbanity of its own exclusive environment.

The design builds around the double-heighted entrance area, which is the heart of the facility, through which guests move in a rhythmic flow, to the many amenities that are spatially organized in a functionally optimum manner throughout the building. Common area interiors match the high energy of club life by using the vibrancy of layered geometrical patterns in varied materiality. Schemes with a palette of natural shadings are used in the backdrops. Technological features such as flat-screen televisions, wireless internet and wireless surround-sound speakers meet the expectations of today’s high-tech generation. Sustainable elements like cork flooring are utilized, and dropped ceiling features with contemporary light fixtures add architectural interest to all the spaces. The selected materials, furnishings and appointments are high-quality, maintenance-friendly and durable.

We also aimed to minimize the energy and plant required for mechanical ventilation, emphasizing a sense of place and using the air cooled ambient air for temperature and movement. Extensive overhangs protect louvered and stacking doors whilst providing ample natural light and connection to the exterior.

Key initiatives:

  • Passive/Low energy ventilation strategy – mixed mode ventilation utilizing a plenum air delivery system to tempered air to level one Restaurant and Bar, supplemented by fans, and fully opening doors and windows to allow for natural ventilation and improve occupant thermal comfort whilst minimizing the use of air conditioning.
  • Shading devices and roof overhangs to ground, first & second floor glazing to minimize glare and solar gain.
  • Rainwater harvesting tank for the special use of the Clubhouse.
  • Low use water fixtures to reduce the amount of potable water used.
  • High efficiency lighting, and controls including an intelligent lighting control system, day lighting and occupancy sensors.
  • Responsibly resourced materials including imported WPC timber members.
  • Internal paint finishes and products with low VOC and formaldehyde content.

Why Clubhouse is Going Viral

Pratiksha Bajikar

Pratiksha Bajikar

The social media platform has another gem added to its treasure, called the Clubhouse. So to say in the pop culture lingo, the app is said to be “lit AF” since it's in a hot spot of news and media. The app has also been making headlines for the security concerns of its users, its billion-dollar investments, and also for being kicked out by the Chinese government.

Let us analyze what is Clubhouse and what the hype is all about.

Clubhouse - Latest news Clubhouse - The App Is Clubhouse Jeopardizing the Security of its Users? Why is Clubhouse getting all the Attention? - Celebrity encounters “The Good Times Show” The Chinese Ban FAQs

Clubhouse - Latest news

February 22, 2021 - Clubhouse has surpassed the 10 million mark for its downloads globally. India has witnessed 42000 installations of the app so far.

February 14, 2021 - "Join me for a Conversation"? Elon Musk invites Putin on Clubhouse.

February 10, 2021 - Clubhouse tops Japan's download chart as CEOs and other top executives embrace app. Clubhouse has been downloaded on 440000 devices in Japan alone.

February 11, 2021 - Facebook is working on a similar app called the Fireside to compete with Clubhouse.

Clubhouse - The App

Clubhouse, founded a year ago, by silicon valley entrepreneur Paul Davison and ex- Google employee Rohan Seth, is an audio chat app that lets you talk, listen or join conversations happening in the “rooms'' of the app. It has a 5000 members cap on every room that is created. If you want to speak, you can “raise your hand” and be brought up on the “stage” along with the moderator in charge of the room.

The Clubhouse app is currently only available for iPhone users. According to the official website of Clubhouse, the developers are working on an android version of the app which will soon be made available.

So once you are invited, you can listen as well as join conversations, discussions and interviews on various topics by entrepreneurs and artists alike. The conversations are live unlike podcasts and can be listened to or joined only while they are on air. You can listen to them while you are multitasking or join a group of listeners on a topic that fuels your curiosity.

Is Clubhouse Jeopardizing the Security of its Users?

Well, the answer cannot be a legit yes but many of the users are bothered by how it demands access to all your contacts. This might not be a surprise as many of the social media apps have the same protocol, But Clubhouse has contact uploading requirements which might be uncomfortable to the users.

The app shows recommendations to those people who have been blocked by other users. For example, if you are being harassed, and have blocked out the contact, Clubhouse lets that harasser know that you’re connected to them via app recommendations.

Also, there are speculations that Clubhouse makes unencrypted recordings of the conversations happening in the virtual “rooms” which it claims to delete if anything happens beyond the status quo.

Adding to the above, another observation is that Agora, the company that is behind the app’s infrastructure, is based in Shanghai. It concerns the users of privacy breach and the data being passed on to the Chinese government.

Why is Clubhouse getting all the Attention? - Celebrity encounters

For an app launched not less than a year ago, it is surprising that Tesla CEO Elon Musk decides to make an appearance. It doesn't stop there, Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg too joined the club.

club house case study in india

“The Good Times Show”

Roughly, a month ago a couple launched a show called “The Good Times Show” which has garnered popularity after it interviewed a few giants from the tech industry. “The Good Times Show” is hosted by a Facebook employee and her husband who is a newly named partner at Andreessen Horowitz.

Elon Musk made an appearance on the show on January 31st where he spoke about his company SpaceX preparing for a Mars trip, about how artificial intelligence will slowly take over, his views on cryptocurrency, and the ongoing pandemic. It all went bananas when he brought on stage Robinhood CEO Vladimir Tenev for an interview. The interview was about the app’s role in the short squeeze of GameStop ’s stocks.

On February 4, the man in charge of the world’s largest social media network, Mark Zuckerberg appeared on the Clubhouse app. Signed in as “Zuck23”, Zuckerberg talked about futuristic technology from Facebook’s Reality Labs Group, which specializes in augmented reality , virtual reality and other platforms believed to be the future of human interaction.

Clubhouse User Growth Over Time

The show further plans to schedule an interview with Elon Musk and rapper Kanye West. The maverick show has been doing new rounds of attention since it interviewed two tech leaders of the industry who are otherwise shy when it comes to media appearances. Clubhouse and “The Good Times Show” could be a new platform for world leaders and influencers to share their knowledge and expertise. It could be also a new media outlet for performers and artists.

The Chinese Ban

Shortly after a certain “room” on the Clubhouse was found discussing taboo topics such as Beijing’s placement of Uighurs in concentration camps in Xinjiang, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement and the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests — absorbing perspectives and information far outside the lines drawn by the Communist Party, the app was blocked by China.

Top Clubhouse Markets by Downloads

There are more than one billion internet users in China. But very few have access to iPhones. The access limits further as users need foreign-registered iPhones to download Clubhouse. Politics was one of the topics discussed that touched the wrong Chinese nerve. The government, afraid of the freewheeling of opinions of the citizens on an American app is troublesome enough and wasted no time in banning the app in China.

Although, various tech-savvy groups from China, which included engineers, product managers, and several intellectuals have talked about making a similar app for their fellow citizens. However, many believe that the Chinese government would never give up that control.

What is the Valuation of Clubhouse?

Clubhouse reached a valuation of $1 billion as of January 24,2021.

Is clubhouse only on Apple?

According to the official website of Clubhouse, the developers are working on an android version of the app which will soon be made available.

Who owns the clubhouse app?

Clubhouse is developed by a Silicon Valley entrepreneur Paul Davison and ex-Google employee Rohan Seth.

When the app becomes available on android, it is going to create a much bigger flow of listeners voicing their opinions and sharing their stories on the platform that Clubhouse seems to provide. This could lead to many countries, afraid of their opinioned citizens, to prevent its use in their countries too.

Nevertheless, its popularity is far from diminishing. As said earlier, Clubhouse could become a new media outlet and host various arguments and discussions that could change the course of activities around the world. It is on its way to reform the patterns of social media behavior and how we use it.

Boat Club Apartments by Shimul Javeri Kadri:A testament to urbanization in India

The Protagonist | Urbanization in India

‘Crafted’, ‘contextual’ and ‘contemporary’ , are the three titles that slide after each other on their website when the inquisitive one clicks on the design philosophy of SJK Architects. Indeed, looking at the photos of their projects of urbanization in India provides us with a glimpse of their principle of intriguingly connecting the built spaces with nature. After The Leaf House at Alibag and The Dasavatara Hotel at Tirupati , a residential structure with a built-up area of approximately 23,600 square feet in the posh Adyar’s Boat Club Road neighbourhood in Chennai exuberantly takes up the role of the protagonist in this article.

Boat Club Apartments by Shimul Javeri Kadri:A testament to urbanization in India - Sheet1

SJK Architects, an award-winning firm in Mumbai, was founded by Shimul Javeri Kadri, the principal architect, in the year 1990; and their portfolio exhibiting the plethora of projects stands testimony to the thirty-two years of their diverse journey. The design directors of the firm include Vaishali Shankar, Sarika Shetty, and Roshni Kshirsagar.

The Site and the Context

Unlike most cities having a spectrum of weather conditions, one humorously remarks that Chennai is famous for its three main transitions; warm, hot, and scorching! Moreover, the traffic scenario in the city and the buzzing construction activities contribute to this perpetual problem of dust, an important consideration not to be neglected. Additionally, there is the issue of breeding mosquitoes due to the contamination of the Adyar river. To make the situation even more complicated, there are the Development Control Rules that allow for 5% balcony space per home and not more than 50% of the perimeter of each floor to have an overhang. With these challenges in mind, how did the firm conceptualize the design?

Boat Club Apartments by Shimul Javeri Kadri:A testament to urbanization in India - Sheet2

The Arrangement | Urbanization in India

The trapezoidal corner-site measured approximately 10,000-square-feet sandwiched by leafy vegetation. A standard setback of four meters in all four directions and the maximum height to seventeen-and-a-half meters was set. The firm incorporated stilts for parking needs and a central core to house the staircase and lift. This atrium space is mechanically ventilated and closed at the top.

This light-filled atrium not only encourages users to exercise their knees but also motivates them to interact with neighbours and to enjoy the natural light. Four duplex homes , approximately of the range 3,500-square-feet to about 4,500-square-feet, envelop this core in an interlocking manner, but each of the apartments is accessed from its own entry level. Some of the very important Vastu principles were considered while designing, like the placement of the master bedroom and the kitchen. The master bedroom on the Southwest corner and, similarly, the kitchen, luckily on two locations, north-west and south-east, remains fixed with the other spaces in the quartet trying to swivel around this hinge. A multipurpose room was also conceptualized and planned on the terrace for social gatherings.

Boat Club Apartments by Shimul Javeri Kadri:A testament to urbanization in India - Sheet3

Exteriors and Interiors

What one sees is an interesting façade design clad in a grey granite called Sadarhalli , with diverse window typologies, the apotheosis of a detailed study on several factors, including the location, use, and the movement of wind in that area. The principal architect Shimul Javeri Kadri mentions that it was not intended to micromanage it; rather, it was intended to ensure that the significant aspects of light, ventilation , and privacy were addressed. The firm also draws in an analogy of comparing the movement of the wind to a bird and that it would come in only if it knew to get outside. So this led them to chart out an exit strategy in all the rooms with large overhangs for protection and meshes to keep the mosquitos out.

 Sheet5

The exterior mirrors the interiors in terms of the colour palette as they are suffused in monochrome hues. The bathrooms and the kitchen were among some of the parts that were designed such because the clients wanted to rent out the duplex homes.

Boat Club Apartments by Shimul Javeri Kadri:A testament to urbanization in India - Sheet6

The planning of Balconies

The balconies of the apartments intimately connect the user to the rain trees and lush vegetation outside. The Development Control rules of Chennai permit a depth of 4 feet for the balconies. Since this seemed inadequate, the team led by Shimul Javeri Kadri scooped out a part of the room to make it at least 8 feet so that a mini workspace with a table and chairs and a plant could coexist, which led to an interesting play of depths.

Boat Club Apartments by Shimul Javeri Kadri:A testament to urbanization in India - Sheet8

Importance of Climate-sensitive design | Urbanization in India

For a place like Chennai that belongs to the category of warm and humid climate, the design of external spaces should consider shading and free passage of air movement, the two basic requirements. The movement of air is important for indoor comfort, and therefore the building must be designed in such a way that it is open for breeze. Large overhangs would be an important part of a traditional coastal shelter; and semi-open spaces like the veranda are the spaces where most of the time is spent. Shimul Javeri Kadri mentions how rules should be used to encourage some and discourage other aspects and emphasize the importance of balconies and terraces.

Project Overview:

The Architectural & Interior Design of the Clubhouse serves as a central anchor for the housing development for the residents. The visual impressions generate an interesting dialogue as well as provides sense of luxury to its users.

club house case study in india

The evolution started with the strategic treatment of the west façade which needed protection from the harsh evening sun as well as provide an unhindered view of the pool. Screens were designed based on these two parameters using exterior grade wooden louvers and vertical greens. They were then alternated to create dynamism and movement in the facade. The vertical gardens add to the drama and softens the building elevations in contrast to the hard surfaces of the deck. The rhythmic interplay of the biophilic and wooden screens breaks the monotony of the large facade of the building.
