Space tourism might have sounded like a fantasy a couple of decades ago. While it is still not a cheap adventure, progress makes it more and more accessible to people. Space tourism has massive potential as a business and stimulus to scientific progress and new career opportunities. Virgin Galactic, Space X, Blue Origin, Orion Spain, and Boeing already offer commercial travel to space for recreational purposes. Each of them hopes to launch suborbital flights regularly, making it a profitable business. Virgin Galactic experienced growth in demand by 15% for suborbital flights in autumn 2021, selling a seat for $450,000. As we can see, space tourism is a promising and highly lucrative sphere. With such wealthy and innovative companies leading the market, there is no doubt that scientists will have more opportunities to conduct experiments in space . The central aspect of any space travel is power generation, making it so expensive. Space tourism might become more affordable with advancements and research on this issue. The development of space tourism also means that there will be new jobs and careers. Some of them might be completely new. Others might be like regular jobs but with adjustments and special training. For example, doctors, nurses, fitness trainers, or excursionists. These and many other professions will require special or additional education to function in space tourism successfully. Space tourism is a dream that has become a reality in the 21 st century. As for now, not so many people can afford it, but there will be more opportunities available with the development of the sphere. Rising demand stimulates the growth of companies offering space tours as well as the science and job market expansion.

Tourism, literally speaking, is the act of travelling to a place for your pleasure or business. The tourism industry is one the biggest industries in the world and is a major source of foreign exchange for any country. Tourism helps to develop a country through the generation of jobs, creation of attractions, restaurants, entertainment, better services in a community, diversification of the economy and cross-cultural diversity. However, recently the tourism industry has been greatly affected due to the pandemic. With the world being shut down, travel was completely restricted and even with everything slowly going back to normal, people are hesitant to travel. Still, the tourism industry remains important for the national economy and would bounce back.

Plenty of employment is generated by the tourism industry and so it alleviates poverty and sustains development. Local handicrafts and cultural activities are all benefitted by tourism. It plays a significant role in promoting international understanding as well as national integrity. One more loftier goal of tourism is to provide a sense of relief and relaxation to people when they feel tired and exhausted from the same monotonous work routine. For many people, it is a way of escape. May be sometimes, all they need is a weekend getaway. A lot of sectors such as aviation, transport, handicraft and horticulture are also benefitted from tourism. It contributes significantly to the GDP of a country as well as to its economic development. Through tourism, the culture and heritage of a country get promoted in foreign as well.

Here we have structured some of the most efficient ways to write an essay on tourism. There are multiple samples related to the essay on tourism, all written in various sub-topics and ranging from different word limits.

Things have now started looking bright for the Indian tourism industry. However, the Indian tourism industry has been hit by pollution. The effluents emitted by the Mathura Refinery have led to the decolourization of the Taj Mahal in Agra. The condition of many of our monuments is deteriorating due to the negligence of the concerned authorities. On the other hand, beaches have become the dumping grounds of garbage and waste left by tourists. The natural environment and heritage sites remain a source of attraction as long as these are not damaged beyond control from their degradation or pollution. Massive tourist traffic, unless regulated, creates these mal-effects. The tourist carrying capacity of a resort needs to be matched to minimise the inconveniences of local people during the period of tourist rush. Youths of the host area are also to be saved from cultural alienation by blindly imitating the lifestyle of foreigners during days of reckless massive tourism. Planning for adopting a sequence of steps like a survey of the existing position of services, facilities needed by tourists and measures for the development of healthy and sustainable tourism, has become a dire need. At the national level, an apex body has to take stock of the status and trends of tourism in comparison with neighbouring countries. It will help appraise the future needs, the nature of various incentives for alluring tourists and the gaps to be removed for better provision as well as management of the infrastructure.

In the era of globalization, tourism has started playing a vital role in the development of economies. Nowadays, tourism makes significant contributions to the economy of a nation; however, it has some drawbacks too. The two major advantages of tourism are the augmentation of the national economy and the generation of employment for local people. Firstly, tourists use a wide range of services which includes hotel bookings, tourist guides, food and transportation. This results in additional income which in turn contributes to the nation’s economy. For example, tourism increases the consumption of domestic products which have a significant impact on the overall GDP growth of the country. Secondly, tourism creates a significant number of job opportunities as without people tour operators, restaurants, hotels and transport services cannot operate. Hence, tourism brings significant benefits such as a boost in the national economy and employment for local people. However, there are various disadvantages associated with tourism such as the destruction of popular destinations and the rise in criminal and illegal activities. Firstly, the massive influx of tourists to places like historical monuments and pilgrimage centres causes significant damage to these age-old structures. In addition, to cope with the demand of tourists/tourism national resources are overexploited. Secondly, as tourists carry valuable items with them such as cash, jewellery and other expensive items, they may become the targets of thieves and other anti-social elements. Hence tourism also has many disadvantages which can be eliminated by the government if they ensure proper security measures and timely maintenance of popular tourist spots. To conclude, in spite of the fact that tourism has certain disadvantages such as destructive effects on monuments and an increase in criminal activities it has a very constructive effect on a nation’s economy and gives a plethora of new job opportunities for locals. I personally believe that the advantages of tourism outweigh its disadvantages.

As an industry the impact of tourism is manifold. The tourism industry nourishes a country’s economy, stimulates the development process and restores the cultural heritage. This industry enjoys a major advantage over other industries of having a unique product that might differ from state to state. For example, Goa is renowned for its sunny beaches and colonial charms, palaces that are reminders of the princely era. During the 1960s great emphasis was placed on tourism as a source of foreign exchange-earners. Tourism is the one industry that earns foreign exchange for a country without exhausting natural resources and without actually exporting any material goods. The income from tourism has tended to increase at a higher rate than merchandise export in a number of countries. There is now almost a continuous flow of income from richer countries to the not-so richer and developing ones, raising the latter’s export earnings and rate of economic growth. For example in countries like India and Spain, tourism is the single largest earner of foreign exchange. According to official Spanish sources, in 1981 there were more visitor arrivals in Spain (40 million) than the actual population of the country (36 million). Tourism is thus the most important source of income for many countries. Development and improvement of infrastructure facilities is another important benefit offered by the tourism industry. Infrastructural facilities such as airports, roads, water supply and other public utilities may be widely shared by the other sectors of the economy. Development of new infrastructure and improvement in the existing infrastructure may confer benefits upon the resident population which they may have not enjoyed otherwise. Furthermore, the provision of infrastructure may provide the basis or serve as an encouragement for greater economic diversification. A variety of secondary industries may be promoted which may not serve the needs of tourism. Thus, indirectly, tourist expenditure may be responsible for stimulating other economic activities of a country. Tourism development greatly benefits the underdeveloped regions of a country. These economically backward regions mostly have places of high scenic beauty, which if developed for the tourism industry, will help to bring a lot of prosperity to the local people. Money spent by tourists helps to improve the health of every business in that region. For example, roads constructed for use by tourists provide local people access to the market centres as well. Earlier, there were many backward areas but due to tourism development, these places got international recognition. For example, Khajuraho, a few years back was considered a remote and unknown small village, but today, it is an internationally famous tourist place of interest and also generates employment for hundreds of local people in hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, handicraft shops etc. Without tourism development, Khajuraho would have remained a remote and unknown village till today. The tourism industry is a highly labour-intensive service industry that generates employment for highly skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labourers in sectors like hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, tourism offices, shops etc. One additional room in a hotel helps at least 8 to 9 people in getting jobs. Not only that, tourism creates employment outside the industry as well, for example, the basic infrastructure like roads, airport, water supply etc. The construction industry creates jobs for thousands of both skilled and unskilled workers. Tourism remains basically a cultural phenomenon. Tourism has always stood as a unique vehicle for cultural promotion. In the past, travel was based on cultural interest. Even today a large number of people travel to foreign countries to learn about their culture and tradition. Tourism indirectly preserves the environment by discouraging large scale industrialisation in places where natural beauty has to be kept intact. It thus helps a country to restore its ancient monuments and archaeological treasures. Most of the developing countries which possess an ancient civilization can benefit greatly from tourism. Tourists visiting these countries have a great urge to become acquainted with ancient civilizations. As a result of cultural shopping, which forms an important part of any tourist itinerary, local handicraft is still surviving. Tourism has also given a new lease of life to the traditional customs, costumes, festivals and dances which generates employment for the weaker section in the remote areas of the country. Hence, tourism can contribute unique benefits to a nation by exploring its cultural heritage and can serve indirectly to improve the individual cultural levels of both national and foreign tourists. Tourism plays an important role in promoting international goodwill. It creates awareness and appreciation of other countries cultures and traditions and makes possible cultural exchange and enrichment. Tourism can be a vehicle for international understanding by way of bringing diverse people from different cultures and traditions face to face. The best way of getting to know another country is to go there and when a vast number of people travel, the prejudices, barriers and suspicions that exist between different countries breakdown the narrow, rigid boundaries that keep people away from each other, naturally tend to shrink and a positive move towards better international understanding begins to operate. Tourism can greatly enrich and promote friendship between different countries in the world. Tourism, thus, develops not only the economic condition of a country by earning foreign exchange for it, but also plays a vital role in its social, cultural and regional development and in promoting goodwill and friendship among all nations of the World.

Question-  Describe the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in the modern world .

Essay 1-

In a time when globalization is sweeping the entire ecosystem, tourism has a crucial responsibility for developing global economies and nations. Nowadays, tourism is what makes widespread economic contributions to all countries, although there are a few negatives as well. This essay talks about the advantages and disadvantages of tourism before concluding with a final opinion.

The biggest benefits of tourism are quite obvious, i.e., boosting the national GDP and economy and creating more employment for local citizens and communities. Tourists use diverse solutions while traveling, including booking hotels, flights, transportation, and guides. They also require food, shopping, and leisure while indulging in a wide gamut of other activities. This leads to extra income for thousands, which contributes handsomely to the country's economy. Tourism increases the GDP significantly and helps create more employment opportunities. People are always needed as tour guides, operators, booking agents, hotel and restaurant staff, transportation personnel, etc. Tourism thus has huge benefits to bring to the table for any country and its local population.

Yet, there are some negatives of tourism as well. This includes the rampant damage of several well-known destinations and increased crime or illegal activities. The huge number of tourists thronging popular cultural and historical landmarks and monuments and other centers of pilgrimage lead to major structural and environmental damage. Along with this aspect, national resources are often overused and overexploited for handling this rush of tourists. At the same time, tourists bring their jewelry, money, and other expensive items, becoming targets for anti-social criminals and thieves, leading to a growth in illegal activities and crime. Hence, tourism has some disadvantages as well. However, the Government can take proactive steps to eliminate the same by providing more security and policing while maintaining popular monuments, tourist spots, and natural resources alike.

To conclude, it can be said that while tourism does have specific disadvantages, it has a positive impact on livelihood, national economies, and overall employment. It also fosters cultural exchange, information gathering, and educational growth. Hence, while Governments may fix the negatives with proactive measures, the positives far outweigh them, in my opinion. (370 words)

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

Tourism has witnessed rapid development over several decades, becoming a major industry worldwide. The global tourism sector is responsible for generating a major percentage of economic wealth for several countries. Most developing economies are also hugely dependent upon tourism for earning national income and the smooth operation of several business sectors and industries, along with maintaining their levels of employment generation. Yet, like every other sector and institution, tourism will always have some advantages and disadvantages. Hence, in this article, we will discuss the pros and cons of tourism in detail to have a balanced insight.

The growth and development of global tourism naturally bring myriad benefits to entire cities, countries, and communities alike. Tourism is one of the biggest foreign exchange sources and boosts the monetary positions of countries by adding to their economy and GPD alike. Whenever tourists visit any other country, they usually use various services and products that enable industries such as hotels and hospitality, airlines, transportation, leisure, food and beverages, souvenirs, apparel, and more. Other benefits of tourism include better relationships and political equations amongst nations, easier travel regulations, and inter-cultural and socio-economic exchange, which fosters better understanding, knowledge, and education overall. Heritage is also promoted and understood by every country at a global level.

However, there are several disadvantages of tourism as well. Growth in tourism means a higher chance of illegal activities and crime, especially theft, since tourists bring valuables in their wake. Secondly, foreign tourists often damage and vandalize places of national interest and importance. They often litter areas while damaging natural resources and beautiful spots simultaneously. They are often ignorant about social and legal conventions in foreign countries and end up violating the same in some situations. Tourism also opens up avenues for illegal migration and trading illegal items at times. However, despite all these disadvantages, I firmly believe that the advantages surpass them in every sense of the term. (339 words)

In conclusion, tourism undeniably plays a critical role in the global economy and cultural exchange, offering substantial benefits such as economic growth, cultural preservation, and international understanding. However, it also poses challenges including environmental impact, cultural commodification, and economic dependence. Balancing these advantages and disadvantages requires sustainable and responsible tourism practices that respect local cultures, protect natural environments, and promote equitable economic benefits. As the world continues to become increasingly interconnected, understanding and addressing the complexities of tourism is essential for preserving its positive impacts while mitigating its negative effects. This nuanced approach to tourism, embracing both its benefits and challenges, is key to ensuring that it remains a positive force in our global society. Read More About IELTS:

It is true that tours to remote and exotic places on the earth have gained popularity in recent years. While this has several benefits for the local community, I believe that overall the negative consequences are more significant.

[do_widget id=custom_html-24]

Admittedly, the growth of the tourism industry has brought enormous benefits to local people. More tourists mean greater demand for food, accommodation, and services, all of which create job opportunities and a lleviate unemployment in the area. The development of tourism also has ripple effects on local infrastructure , with more roads and bridges being built to meet tourists’ needs . This can be seen in the case of ABC, a coastal city, and also a tourist destination in [your country].

[do_widget id=custom_html-47]

The biggest disadvantage of the trend is, however, its adverse effects on the pristine environment and creatures living there. Forests may be cut down to make way for resorts and hotels; marine life might be threatened due to water pollution, and birds have to find other places to inhabit . In some places, waste from the hotel industry is becoming an environmental problem that concerns many people, not just environmentalists. Another drawback is that increased tourism may break social cohesion in the local community. Many people make a living by providing services for travelers and become rich while many others remain poor and struggle for the next meal. This wealth gap is gradually widening and has detrimental impacts on the bond and the shared values of indigenous individuals.

In conclusion, although the growth of tourism to remote areas and exotic countries is beneficial to some extent, it is more likely to have harmful impacts on local people and the environment.

It is evidently being seen that the tourism and travel industry has been propped in the wake of infrastructural development. It has inevitably impacted the local geographical condition and the ambience thereof. In my opinion, it has been causing a progressive effect on the environment. In the paragraphs to follow, this essay will talk about the reasons for this.

As the routes and links to the interiors of the far-flung regions have been ameliorated and well-structured, the economic aspect related to it has been in full swing. A mammoth of growth in the terms of the economy has been clearly evinced, with respect to, a major footfall of the travellers all around, catapulting the employment opportunities in the remote regions. It thus has opened the avenues of food shops and stores, hospitality subset, transport arena and so on and so forth. In the deprived wildernesses of umpteen places, for instance, a total revamps and tweaking of the terrain is seen more often than not, thereby needing the human resource for it and eradicating destitution owing to a paucity of wages due to lack of or no work.

Additionally, the disordered and mismanaged natural resources have been able to be utilized and exacted the benefit out of, in the most optimal way, which was not the case prior to the advancing strides made in the travel domain. From the community point of view as well, which were hardly known and cognized to have existed, let alone their acknowledgement, have been brought to the mainstream attention and hence have added to the cultural opulence of the society, as a whole.

Though the side effects of this proliferation in the purview of environmental degradation have been seen as well, with proper protocols and precautionary standards, it could be significantly palliated. However, this couldn’t asphyxiate the growth in the mileage of the journey of progression.

Conclusively, it could be said that the strides of tourism to the remote communities and areas have helped the demography and geography of the people therein and hence, a fairly positive development.

The community tourism is increasingly favoured by most people as the principal tourist attraction in the view of many such organized trips are offered to them. Regarding the tour, the remote community travel has both positive and negative consequences on the local people within their vicinity. Concerning the dilemma, I would be more inclined to support the opportunistic side of local community tourism.

Firstly, the striking point is promotion of remote community travel enables local people to preserve their exotic and pristine environment. Recently, there is surged popularity in organising eco-tourism trip is due to people tend to have short escape from reality. In fact, majority of the citizens are weary about the daily hectic and bustling urban lifestyles. A short getaway trip to remote area in turn will enable them to unwind themselves via viewing the authentic greenery scene. Moreover, as the gradual diminishment of natural habitat progresses, the eco-site attraction brings invaluable experience to the tourists. Thus, the city dwellers can witness the original habitat of flora and fauna which unlock their unprecedented and unique experience with the nature.

The second advantage is the enabler for the room of potential to stimulate local economy. The vast number of community travel provides multitude of incentives to urban dwellers to generate substantial earnings by selling local products such as home-grown nourishments and souvenirs. Apart from selling their products, the commercialisation of the local site visit provides them gargantuan amount of revenues through the admission tickets are being sold. Therefore, the overall earning capacity of the local residents rise dramatically and benefit the community development as a whole. The rise in earnings allow more the local people to contribute to environmental preservation to remain as aesthetic tourist attraction in attracting more travellers.

In a nutshell, strides of community trips have brought lots of benefits to local environment besides preserving environmental climate. Pertaining to effectiveness of remote tourism, the eco-travel industry should be main area of focus on lifting up the local economy.

Visitors love to visit rarely known places and are enthusiastic about knowing the culture of distinct tribes and countries. I believe this is a positive development.

First and foremost, tourists will encourage local people to preserve their culture. In other words, it is inevitable that cultures and old customs are fading away and foreigners’ visits may work as a motivation for locals to hold their customs tightly. Secondly, natives may be proud of the customs, which previously were a source of embarrassment, because when visitors show excitement about that country’s culture, natives may start to follow their cultures again, which once diminishes in the name of modern living. For example, several communities have special dresses, which are becoming a thing of the past, but tourists might keep them alive. Therefore tours to remote communities will do good but harm.

When people from different countries travel through various countries, they will spread rare and beautiful anecdotes and cultures around the world. Furthermore, tourism also provides financial aid and creates employment. For instance, many poor countries that do not have many resources but beautiful places and rich cultures, depend on tourism economically. Meanwhile, this is indirectly beneficial for the environment also. As in order to preserve mesmerizing natural sites, governments try to minimise carbon footprint. Take Bhutan, for instance, which has a law that 60% of the land will be allocated for the forest, which makes this country carbon negative.

To conclude, I think trips to remote culturally rich areas bring several benefits and create an ambience of respecting each other’s customs and rituals.

Offbeat destinations are becoming quite popular these days. People are craving to unravel these so called untouched and remote places and hence the tourism industry off late is organising tours to such destinations.

Such a development has its pluses and minuses. In this essay, I shall dwell upon the positive aspects of the tourism industry which is seeking and reaching out to such remote countries and their communities and shall also discuss some of its demerits.

Firstly speaking of the benefits such far off places where not on the tourist map earlier. However recent shift in interests of people to venture to such remote locations and interact with the local communities has given the industry and also these communities the much need fillip. With more and more people visiting these nations, more source of income in the form of home stays have opened up. Employment of the local youth as guides has also given them adequate job opportunities. Overall, there has been considerable influx of money to these otherwise neglected countries.

However on the other hand if we see, such developments have also brought in a lot of vices. More tourists mean more pollution and thus posing greater danger to the fragile biodiversity. Another aspect is the conversion of farmlands to hotels to cater for the huge number of tourists visiting these countries. The local communities are also clearing forest lands to give way to development of infrastructure for the tourists.

Thus to conclude, I would say that the development of tourism industry in remote countries and reaching out to such remote communities is surely a welcome step but it must be done with a sense of responsibilty without hampering the environment or posing a threat to the development of the local people.

A Level General Paper Notes, Essays and Tuition

2021 A-Level General Paper (GP) Paper 1 Essay Questions

The 2021 paper was made up of a notably large number of questions under the media theme: a third of questions were under the media theme, covering topics of social media, news, films and advertising. We managed to spot the question on advertising despite it being a rather niche topic, and our students that year would know that ‘media’ is among the first themes we covered. We covered all aspects tested—we had lessons exclusively for social media, news, films and advertising respectively. These subtopics are often combined by teachers under a rather rushed, surface-deep lesson on ‘media’, overlooking these key components.

1. How far is the pursuit of happiness the most important human goal? [Miscellaneous]

2. ‘Scientific advancement breeds complacency.’ How far do you agree? [Science]

3. ‘Power these days lies more with the people than the politicians.’ To what extent is this true? [Politics]

4. To what extent has social media devalued true friendship in your society? [MEDIA]

5. To what extent is charitable giving desirable? [Miscellaneous, but we had a lesson specifically on charity!]

6. ‘Films are concerned with escaping from the problems of everyday life, rather than addressing them.’ Discuss. [MEDIA]

7. ‘What an individual eats or drinks should not be the concern of the state.’ What is your view? [Politics]

8. Is news today reliable? [MEDIA]

9. ‘The arts are nothing more than a luxury.’ How far is this true of your society? [Arts]

10. ‘Staging major sporting events brings nothing but benefits to the host country.’ Discuss. [Sports]

11. Are global tourism and travel still necessary when everything can be experienced or achieved online? [Movement of people]

12. ‘Advertising is largely about persuading people to buy what they do not need.’ How far do you agree? [MEDIA]

The Complete List of GP Topics & Themes

Are you running out of time to prepare for your examples required for your GP essays? Are you looking to form an effective strategy to tackle your Paper1? if yes, read on and explore our recommended Thematic Essay Strategies (TES) on handling your essay paper.

1st, 12 questions will be set, of which you only answer one. This will allow GP essay exam candidates like you the chance to express an informed, critical, creative and relevant response.

Table of Contents

Most Common GP Topics for Essay Paper 1

The most common topics are: 1. Historical, social, cultural, economic, political and philosophical topics 2. Science including its history, philosophy, general principles, current developments and applications 3. Mathematical and geographical topics 4. Literature and language 5. Arts and crafts 6. Topics of local interest and global concern, as stated from the GP Syllabus (Code: 8807)

Now, the above topics is by no means exhaustive. We can easily go into subtopics for each of the main 6 topics. For example: under the General Paper topic of Literature and language, we can go deeper into Mass Media, , Music, Media, Film, etc. Or, under the topic of local interest and global concern, we can zoom into Singapore only, Gender (Women), Environmental (Animals, Water & the Sea, Land Use, Pollution), etc.

So you get the point, and that preparing by topics alone isn’t going to help a lot.

General Paper Themes for Essay Exams

What’s better than preparing by topics? Answer: You can prepare by GP themes! That is, by group several topics into a theme, you can more easily craft a relevant, creative and balanced response.

Below are sample essay questions inspired by the essay questions in this year’s prelim papers, as they have been modified. As promised, they are organised them into themes for your easy perusal and reference. The following themes are grouped and selected based on their frequency in the A Level GP exams as well as they broad enough to cover a variety of questions.

The major themes to focus on are:

a. Arts, Language & Mass Media b. Economic & Political Issues c. Science & Technology & Medicine d. Moral Dilemmas & Personal Experiences (aka Values, Philosophy or Individuals) e. Social & Economic issues f. Crime & Punishment g. General.

In addition to grouping topics into themes for easier and effective preparation of your essay exam for GP, we can also prepare by question type. This involves your exam techniques and your experience of handling certain categories of exam questions. For example, the following list are common question types:

Type 1: Questions attempting to make a causal link between topics or themes

Some questions establish a relationship / / maybe even causality between two issues and hence you would need to identify that relationship and either agree with it or refute it. For such qu estions with 2 issues or subjects, the link between the two issues is the focus of the  essay. Do NOT have a separate discussion of the 2nd issue.

Examples: 1a: Technological advancements always bring about social equality. How far do you agree?  1b: he world would be a better place if everyone spoke the same language.’ Discuss. 1c: How prepared are we for climate change? Discuss this for your country. 1d: Medical science has been so successful that people now expect too much of it.’ Comment. 1e: Advertisements are often entertaining, but they rarely affect consumer choice.’ Do you agree? 1f: Should poorer countries develop their tourist industry when the basic needs of their own people are not being met? 1g: ‘Instead of speeding up the pace of life, we should be slowing it down.’ What do you think?

Type 2: Questions that target … ‘in your country’…

2.1: Is there value to historic sites in your society? 2.2: How prepared are we for climate change? Discuss this for your country. 2.3: ‘Freedom of expression is a luxury we cannot afford.’ How far is this true in your society? 2.4: Choose a sport and account for its popularity in your country: Golf 2.5: Choose a sport and account for its popularity in your country: Tennis 2.6. Which period in the history of your country appeals most to you? Give reasons for your choice. 2.7: Would you plan the layout of your neighbourhood differently?

Type 3: Questions that require … ‘in your opinion’…

3.1: What do you consider is a meaningful life? 3.2; What do you consider to be a rich life? 3.3: “Give me the country life, any time.” Comment. 3.4: Discuss the benefits of keeping a diary? 3.5: What factors would you consider when choosing a job? 3.6: If you were asked to set up an exhibition, what would you choose to exhibit and why? 3.7: It is better to live a short, exciting life rather than a long, uninteresting one. How far is this true?  3.8 “Leisure activities are a necessity, not a luxury.” Do you agree? 3.9 “The place for animals is in the wild, not in zoos or circuses.” Comment.

Type 4: Knowledge-based Questions

Such questions assume that students have an in-depth knowledge of the characteristics of the topic areas to be discussed in the essay. These KBQ tend to add in absolute words such as : never, solely, only, always, etc. Hence, commonplace knowledge will allow you, the GP student to pass, but obviously reflects nothing more than mediocrity. Knowledge must be showcased not just through a range of evidence but also through the differing conclusions one con draw from the some piece of evidence.

Examples: 4.1: Can the trade in weapons ever be justified? 4.2: Is sport too closely linked with money these days? 4.3: Discuss the view that too much faith is placed in statistics.

4.4: To what extent are small businesses preferable to large ones? Inevitably this question appealed to candidates who studied Economics. but it also proved to be a discriminator in identifying candidates who could make effective use of their General Paper skills and those who merely regurgitated theoretical arguments and unexplained Economics jargon, such as ‘economies of scale’ and ‘merit goods”.

Abbreviated forms, such as SBEs (Small Business Enterprises) and MNCs (Multinational Corporations) were not uncommon. These must be explained. Furthermore, very tortuous attempts were often made in the introduction to define small and large businesses.

4.5: Can small countries have a significant voice in world affairs Focus on the following: Switzerland, Vatican City, Luxemburg & Singapore

4.6: Is effective farming possible without science? Candidates drew upon the distinction between subsistence farming and that which was more of an industry, often tailored to meet modern demands of population and choice. Similarly, there was an awareness of organic farming, with its benefits and drawbacks. A good range of examples was incorporated to illustrate the impact of science on agriculture: the development of seeds, fertilisers, alternative means of producing crops and so on.

General Insights:

general paper essay questions on tourism

Why do A Levels Essay Questions always seem so much more difficult that Practice/Prelim ones? Is it true that they are more difficult? The good news is they are actually easy if we analyse them and think about the strategies !

Strategies = content + skills . this two-pronged is exactly what we focus on at zascension, helping students acquiring specific thematic knowledge while developing extensive skills that will greatly enhance the quality of essays..

Here is the spread of questions according to Themes (note that there are 13 because Q3 has 2 Themes).

Sci Tech (1): Q2

Media (3): Q4, Q8, Q12

Arts (2): Q6, Q9

Politics (2): Q3, Q7

Individual-Values (3): Q1, Q5, Q3

General (2): Q10, Q 11

Studying for GP Content through Major Themes is highly recommended

I have always been sharing with students that my approach in Content Knowledge for GP resides in preparing for major themes . It gives us a systematic method of acquiring knowledge that we would need and ensures that our knowledge can directly be applied to questions. The 2021 GP A Levels has confirmed, once again, the importance of these major themes. The themes stated above are precisely the ones I have identified all along, and you can see that’s how we organise all the past year Prelim and A Level questions too.

For easy access, here are the links to other past year questions organised based on Themes: 2020 A Levels , 2019 A Levels , 2020 Prelims , Prelims Compilation from different years

Back to 2021 A Levels, out of the 12 questions, 10 of them belong to the major themes . This is why it is important to be strategic and focus on these major themes instead of working on other niche topics. Niche topics that I often tell students to avoid include: poverty, family/social, crime & punishment, business/economy. Out of the 2 General questions, 1 on Travel is a heavily predicted topic and 1 on Sports events is slightly more niche. The insight from here is that the dominant GP strategy is to take a focused approach in developing a critical understanding of these Themes and the associated issues found in them.

Very intriguingly, the general difficulty of 2021 questions is much lower (good news for the J2 this year!!) than last year because there are fewer niche questions or cross-theme questions. In fact, there is not really a cross-theme question except Q3 that looks a bit at individual activism. Other than that, questions are standard and belong solely to one theme. It rewards students who have specialised and comprehensive knowledge about a specific theme

Skills are important to help us address varied questions requirements

Question requirements are often complex with modifiers (additional requirements) and there could even be more than one modifier.

Interestingly, ALL questions this year have at least 1 modifier . Even the shortest question Q8 has a context of ‘today’. This demonstrates the importance of properly analysing questions such that we sufficiently address all the additional requirements 🙂

Q1: Absolute | Q2: Extent | Q3: Variables | Q4: Extent, Context | Q5: Extent | Q6: Variables | Q7: Variables | Q8: Context | Q9: Context | Q10: Absolute | Q11: Variables, Context | Q12: Variables

Context: Q4, Q8, Q9, Q11 | Absolute: Q1, Q10 | Variables: Q3, Q4, Q6, Q7 | Extent: Q2, Q4, Q5

Here is a quick summary of the skills needed (CAVE):

Context/Condition = Examples and arguments need to reflect the context and not just ignore it. This includes ‘in your society’ questions because they are only looking at the specific context of Singapore.

For example, for Q11, students might make the mistake only ignoring the context. Let’s say BP1 explains the benefits of travel without acknowledging the context of online experiences. This would not Answer The Question (ATQ) because showing the benefits of travel do not immediately mean these benefits cannot be replaced by online experiences.

Absolute = One view needs to express the absolute. The other view questions the absolute. For example, for Q1, View A = happiness most important | View B = happiness  not  most important (questions the absolute). For balance, both views need to be considered.

Variables = Both variables always have to be addressed together, in each argument/example. We have to remember to always keep a vigilant lookout for the existence of such additional requirements, instead of eagerly jumping into thinking of points! Look at the following section for more details.

Extent = Need to show how both views could be valid to a degree. Avoid phrases like ‘I agree to a small/large/certain extent’ because they are too vague. Instead, give the specific extent of why you have chosen one view over the other.

Questions with double variables are common curve balls

Q3 (People vs Politicians)

Q4 (Social media & Friendship)

Q6: (Escapism vs Addressing problems)

Q7 (Individual & State)

The key to addressing such questions is to understand that the Scope of our essay has expanded into additional areas of concern . For instance, in Q4, we cannot simply discuss the pros and cons of social media without linking back to its impact on friendship. Both our examples and arguments would need to actively address both variables.

Similarly, in Q6, we would need to examine how viewpoint A looks at films focusing on escapism and viewpoint B looks at films confronting and addressing the problems of reality.

Double variables questions are harder because we have an additional requirement to consider . Note that every single body paragraph (BP) needs to address both variables and compare them. The common mistake is to separately discuss them across different paragraphs; it is problematic because the arguments would lack the comparative element.

Major and Minor Themes

Based on analysis of only Past A Levels questions, the 3 most major themes are Arts, Sci/Tech, Politics. Media and Environment are also major themes but recent questions trends have been somewhat extreme.

It is incredibly peculiar how Environment questions have not come up for  4 consecutive years  in a row, despite the ongoing discourse around sustainability and climate change. I am not sure why this is the case but it would mean that we need to prepare for more than 1 major theme to ensure that we are able to confidently answer at least 1 out of 12 questions. One explanation is that it is already included in Paper 2 Compre where we look at fashion and the environment.

Media is strange because Media has been entirely missing in 2014 and 2018 but had two questions in 2019 and another two questions in 2020. And wow, this year there are actually 3 questions for Media! Media may soon become part of the most major themes because of the increasing importance of social media and its corollary issues (fake news, privacy infringement, social activism etc.). Though, do note that social media is only 1 out of 3 in this year’s questions. Q8 looks at all forms of news (both online and traditional), Q12 also looks at all forms of advertising.

Additionally, Individual-Values is a great theme to look into. This is not a common theme used by schools but I have coined this term because I found huge similarities in questions that can be categorised under this theme. For more information, please refer to the past year questions (links provided above, and also all the way at the bottom of this page). This year Indv-Values has three questions, focusing on the values of happiness (Q1), charity (Q5), and individual & bottom-up activism (Q3). We will talk more about these questions in the specific analysis below.

general paper essay questions on tourism

Specific Analysis:

I will be analysing each question for their unique requirements, highlighting some pertinent issues, and sharing possible arguments . Disclaimer: these would of course not be the only points that are accepted. If you thought of a different point, it might be a strong argument too, don’t worry just because it is not found here. I just wanted to share some points to open up perspectives on how we can approach these different 2021 questions.

1. How far is the pursuit of happiness the most important human goal? – Difficult

  • This is a standard question that looks at the importance of happiness. It is an Indv-Values question because when we think about happiness, a substantial part of our examples would relate to individuals . Of course, we can consider happiness on a larger societal level but that would not paint the full picture of why happiness might be important. What is its specific value for us?
  • Given that there is an absolute, one of the views would need to prove that it is indeed the most important human goal. Implicitly, this requires us to compare with other human goals that are equally important , but somehow happiness still emerges as the most dominant goal we should strive towards. Other possible human goals include: having a decent standard of living, acquiring material comforts, prioritising stability, pursuing knowledge, developing empathy, serving the needs of others.
  • The other view would limit the absolute and explain the exact extent that is more viable, situated among other goals.
  • Agree =  Importance of mental health as a core foundation that provides the right state of mind to pursue other goals | Happiness is too often sacrificed as a trade-off because it is often not foregrounded as a priority
  • Disagree =  Could be too self-centred and hedonistic and we are living in an increasingly social and interconnected world that requires empathy for others| Happiness is a concept can be too subjective which makes it difficult to have it as a goal (could look at more objective and tangible outcomes)
  • Quick thing to note that scientific advancement (SA) focuses more on the knowledge aspect . However, the advancement part also considers the application aspect (i.e. technology). It is okay to use examples that have both aspects ; it is not okay to use examples only relating to technology (e.g. phone apps, social media)
  • The first step that would make it much easier is to realise that this question is ultimately evaluating the impacts of SA . However, this is the only Sci/Tech question of the year, it is of course slightly more challenging than a standard question. We have to evaluate impacts, in the specific context of complacency . In other words, complacency = being excessively satisfied with our current progress, failing to recognise potential dangers, unwilling to look at possibilities of change and improvement, overconfidence. All impacts would need to link back to some of these interpretations , either because it leads to complacency or it does not
  • Agree = Remarkable breakthroughs and newfound capabilities engender a false sense of security | Excessive dependence on SA to solve our problems and being blind to other root causes | Futuristic advancements perpetually offer new possibilities that makes it easy to forget about potential issues that could surface
  • Disagree = Significant discourse and action around regulating SA | There are still gaps/problems that SA cannot address, which makes us keenly aware of its limitations | SA itself is a source of new problems and complications, forces us on a quest of always trying to improve SA

3. ‘Power these days lies more with the people than the politicians.’ To what extent is this true? – Difficult

  • When we get a broad question with a very loaded term like “power”, we need to first analyse what power is . Power means being able to determine what happens in a country (i.e. rights protected, future direction, policies, legal restrictions). Be sure to also point out that there are various different political contexts . We should discuss both democracies and more authoritarian/dictatorial states
  • A useful tool to brainstorm points here would be to recognise that even though there are key difference between people and politicians, they are inextricably intertwined because of the social contact theory . In other words, people can affect what politicians decide and what politicians decide will affect the lives of people
  • We can also look at how power is actually shown by both parties. Power from the people comes mainly from social movements and elections/voting (in democracies). Power from politicians come from policies enacted and legal instruments . The context of “these days” would of course trigger us to think about social media
  • Remember to compare between both variables in every BP to determine who has more power
  • Agree = Importance of social movements where their traction would exert significant pressure on events transpiring (many examples of tangible change being engendered by social movements that are ground-up and pushed by the people) | Politicians catering to populist views of the majority to garner votes (which is why the concept of tyranny of the majority exists)
  • Disagree = Social movements may not always yield the desired outcomes (especially in more authoritarian or dictatorial countries where they tend to be suppressed) | Policies and legislation are pre-existing and people are always in a reactive position where they can only express how they feel but what is pre-determined is by politicians

4. To what extent has social media devalued true friendship in your society?  – Difficult

  • This is a question that seems quite easy because it is in the familiar territory of social media. Yet, it is challenging because the context of ‘in your society’ severely limits other more global examples of social media activity (be sure to identify some key SG characteristics). Also, it is the standard “impact of social media” question except that the impact needs to be linked back to a narrow space of friendshi p, which again precludes many other common arguments
  • Impact on friendship is actually quite difficult because it is hard to think of examples that can prove that friendship has been impacted. How would we know? Friendship is typically something personal and existing perpetually in the background
  • To provide substantial scope, we need to think about what true friendship entails . A useful method is to first consider why this question even exists , why is this being asked? Often, social media is perceived to have undermined the quality of our friendships and communication because it pushes them into the digital space which can be quite limited. True friendship typically suggests that it has to be a meaningful and in-depth connection that is mutually supportive for both parties, and of course it should be sustained in the long run and not just a fleeting encounter
  • Agree = Concerns of it being more superficial where our connections are extensive but not in-depth | Ways of maintaining friendships has become excessively reliant on online interaction, sacrificing in-person interaction (especially in times of COVID), the short distance of Singapore makes it unreasonable to not engage in face-to-face interaction
  • Disagree = Social media is used to complement existing ways of building and maintaining friendships, enhances instead of devalues | Useful in a cosmopolitan state like Singapore where friendships can often happen across borders and social media becomes an indispensable tool for such long-distance relationships (even more so with globalisation normalising this)
  • A standard question that looks at the importance of being charitable which links to other related values of empathy, altruism, generosity, some degree of selflessness, philanthropy, volunteerism
  • Such questions are easy to address because they are simply looking at pros-cons of this particular value , without additional requirements of a specific context or some additional variable to consider
  • The important thing to note is from whose perspective are we talking about when we look at desirability? We can of course some benefits to self (perhaps the joy of giving is correlated with happiness), but the central focus on this question is still on the recipients because they are the main beneficiary of charity and philanthropy
  • Agree = Helps to alleviate inequality which has become a substantial problem in many countries in recent times | Value lies in not just the act of giving, but also in the kind of attitude we have towards the needs of certain marginalised groups (empathy and compassion are crucial in a society) | Helps to address the plight of those who may have fallen through the cracks (recognising the state and organisation-based charity efforts may not be entirely sufficient) | Yields personal benefits (correlated with happiness)
  • Disagree = Charity does not solve the root cause of social problems (it could even detract from it) because it merely addresses the symptoms or the situation of individuals but not larger systemic issues| Extent of desirability limited by the actual processes designed to safeguard the integrity and transparency of charity, intent does not always translate into outcome (must ensure that funds are not being siphoned away by corrupt individuals) | Can also be limited by how funds are being allocated (what causes, who benefits?)
  • Do films offer anything more than an escape from reality?
  • For arts question that evaluate the function and impact of a specific art form (in this case films), it is invariably much easier to take a more positive perspective where our main stand highlights different points of how films can be valuable in helping to address problems around us
  • “Problems of everyday life” is also a favourable area of concern because it is broad enough to include many different kinds of problems : stress and mental health issues, discrimination, declined interest in heritage and history because we are preoccupied with the routines of everyday life, personal development and becoming a better person (more reflective, more critical, more empathetic), existential questions about the meaning of life (human condition)
  • Agree =  Focus of films is on aesthetic visuals, sound effects, and immersivity, creates an experience of escapism just as a much-needed respite from the stresses of life (precisely to take a break from problems) | It depends on the genre of films, there are many that only seek to entertain, with that being the primary or even the sole function (entertainment means not thinking about problems) | Fleeting duration of films makes it difficult to suggest it is able to solve problems
  • Disagree = Problem-solving done by films is nuanced where it happens over time, impact of film goes beyond the escapist duration to convey important lessons that help in personal growth | Films are powerful social commentaries that can profoundly shape attitudes and catalyse social change, film issues and subject matters tend to be influenced by the existing zeitgeist and social milieu | Offers moments of introspection that get us to think more deeply about our lives and introspect on ideas of the human condition and human psyche

general paper essay questions on tourism

7. ‘What an individual eats or drinks should not be the concern of the state.’ What is your view? – Difficult

  • “Eats or drinks” sounds like two variables but we can actually merge them into the idea of consumption and dietary habits. Merging variables, when appropriate, makes it easier to address the question
  • For such a question, it is likely we immediately have an intuitive view that it is something too private and does not concern the state. At the same time, we need to take a step back to ask why this question exists . The larger concern behind is about how there are consequences for such actions . Governance is always concerned with this tension between giving enough freedom while having an ideal amount of control that tries to steer the country towards certain desirable outcomes
  • Another related trend could be looking at whether governments should eventually push for alternative diets that cut down on meat consumption (this is a common contemporary advocacy issue)
  • The question here becomes: what determines this delicate balance for governance ? What would it depend on? What perspectives matter?
  • Agree = Fundamental freedom that the individual should have (it is something personal and related to the body, there are also views advocating for body positivity and acceptance) | Neoliberal economies are characterised by individuals having the freedom to choose, free-market approach with decreased government intervention
  • Disagree = Individual actions surrounding consumption can directly affect health which is a major concern of governments since healthcare spending can be substantial | Beyond the individual, consumption can involve societal-wide impacts (i.e. social problems, environmental concerns)
  • My general sensing is that many students might have attempted this question because media questions are often more popular than other themes
  • This is a question that I have been predicting since a couple of years back. It speaks to the larger issue of fake news where the spread of misinformation and disinformation could severely undermine the credibility of news
  • Yet, we have to remember that reliability is also determined by other factors . Is news excessively sensationalised to only focus on certain more frivolous or dramatic content? Is news reporting plagued by certain biases and framed in problematic ways?
  • The important thing to remember is the “news” is a general term that includes the context of the mass media where news exist in different forms and are conveyed through different mediums. Essay should not only discuss social media and the internet without thinking about the larger scope
  • On the issue of scope, the essay should also think about the increasing polarised media environment where users only receive news from some “trusted” sources which may actually be biased (i.e. the phenomenon of echo chambers)
  • Also, “news” can be quite niche because it has to relate to information about recent events. It excludes other kinds of media content (e.g. advertisements)
  • Agree = Fact-checking process and ensuring the quality of information is something upheld by media agencies who are concerned with reputation, especially with growing concerns of fake news | Increased regulation from governments and large platforms to combat fake news
  • Disagree = User-generated content and citizen journalism are also included in the media landscape of news and these do not go through the stringent checking processes in media agencies | Political biases have seeped into different media outlets and platforms and the polarised news environment makes it challenging to ascertain the reliability of information (issues of echo chambers and algorithms or bots promoting fake news) | Governments and platforms may also be complicit in the propagation of fake news  | Technology allows for the doctoring/falsification of information and masquerading it as credible
  • This question is a standard one from the theme of arts that looks at affordability and accessibility . Take note of the absolute because it requires one view to prove that is indeed only a luxury
  • This leads to the logical question of asking what else can the arts be . Instead of being a luxury, the arts can be a necessity or public good where it has value for the common man (not just an esoteric or privileged group)
  • Since it’s an “in your society” question, it would be helpful to ponder the defining characteristics of the local arts scene , including events, actual works of art, amount of state funding, general public interest in the arts, types of local art forms found in the umbrella term of the arts
  • Agree = Privilege for the rich because it requires time and money to enjoy it (especially in the realm of fine arts that can be expensive), it may also be viewed as something frivolous that does not fit into the fast pace of life in Singapore | The relative lack of focus in arts education would mean that not everyone is equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to appreciate the arts
  • Disagree = Technology has revolutionised the affordability of the arts where one does not have to physically own art pieces to enjoy them (many can be accessed online either for free or at a low price) | Many local art events are subsidised to encourage participation and appreciation of the arts | The arts include an entire range of works beyond just the more expensive realm of fine arts (local works tend to be more inclined towards the contemporary avant-garde style) | Serves a real function (not just a luxury because luxury implies that it is merely a past time on the side); it is actively used for social commentary in Singapore

10. ‘Staging major sporting events brings nothing but benefits to the host countries.’ Discuss.

  • The glaring term is of course the absolute. It can be quite a mouthful and hard to understand. Hence, we should rephrase it to something that makes more sense: brings only benefits . Does staging major sporting events brings only benefits?
  • This is a simple question if we have some specific knowledge about the recent examples of major sports events around the world
  • Again, questioning why the question exists helps illuminates some of key issues . Many countries are willing to invest heavily into such events, both in terms of obtaining the rights to hold such events and in terms of the actual budget for the event. So, why are countries so fixated on such events? What are the costs and can we think of costs as something beyond just financial costs ?
  • Agree = Major sporting events have a lot of prestige and host countries enjoy the surge in international reputation and image | Major sporting events would also attract crowds from all over the world which means significant tourism spending that could be beneficial for the economy + profits from ticket sales
  • Disagree = Sporting events tend to take up a lot of space and in countries where space is lacking, this could mean displacement of certain marginalised groups to make space | Cost of bidding for and actually hosting the event may be too substantial for a country to afford even with sponsorships

11. Are global tourism and travel still necessary when everything can be experienced or achieved online?

  • Tourism and travel is another aspect I have been predicting because it is a universal idea that will always be relevant
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has of course impacted this too, such that we are relying on more virtual experiences to compensate for this loss of geographical mobility
  • The central debate here is whether there are some benefits of physical travel that simply cannot be replaced by online experiences.
  • View A would suggest that despite advancements in technology, online experiences cannot fully replace travel. View B would express opinions that travel has a declined importance (not as necessary) with the richness of digital experiences
  • Take note of how the context of online experiences is constantly addressed in every single BP
  • Agree = Physical travel and physical environments have aspects that cannot be fully encompassed by online experiences (multi-sensory experience) | Global travel also involves the social component of interacting with locals, some of whom do not have much presence online |  The act of physically going overseas is also an important break from the routines of life where we become more open to appreciating new experiences, changing our perspectives, and having some takeaways (online experiences are too ordinary because they are readily accessible) | Idea of the tourist imagination where overseas experiences are always seen as more exotic and appealing (online experiences only serve to fuel the tourist imagination instead of satisfy it)
  • Disagree = Technological advancements have sought to recreate spaces to an immensely realistic degree, especially with VR and AR technology (can even recreate spaces that have been destroyed or removed) | Online experiences have the possibilities of going beyond what is physically available in the world (e.g. experiences relating to history, fantasy, sci-fi)

12. ‘Advertising is largely about persuading people to buy what they do not need.’ How far do you agree?

  • Questions about advertising have not appeared for many years in the A Levels but this year it made a comeback
  • This is another perennial concern when we think about the media . In fact, it is a very popular question in the past when there were concerns surrounding advertisements being manipulative
  • Some knowledge about the ongoing sustainability conversation would be helpful where advocates have criticised modern consumerism and materialism for our incessant consumption . This behaviour is indubitably influenced by advertising that drives demand for certain products and services
  • Agree = Emotional manipulation is a common technique used by advertisers to encourage consumption, some advertisements are even accused of resorting to subliminal advertising (tapping on our subconscious), or artificially enhancing products with the precise intention of convincing consumers they need the product | Advertisements often accompany the latest available technologies and products, which may inherently be items that we do not need (companies release them for profit, not to address real needs). Advertisements come in to convince us of the need
  • Disagree = Consumers are getting more savvy and discerning with the amount of available information, advertisers would have to satisfy a real need for it to be attractive | Advertising may not always relate to businesses; it is also extensively used by advocacy groups to try and evoke social change (need not involve buying, it could just be about behavioural or attitudinal change)

When listening to music, the human brain appears to be biased toward hearing and producing rhythms composed of simple integer ratios — for example, a series of four beats separated by equal time intervals (forming a 1:1:1 ratio).

However, the favored ratios can vary greatly between different societies, according to a large-scale study led by researchers at MIT and the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics and carried out in 15 countries. The study included 39 groups of participants, many of whom came from societies whose traditional music contains distinctive patterns of rhythm not found in Western music.

“Our study provides the clearest evidence yet for some degree of universality in music perception and cognition, in the sense that every single group of participants that was tested exhibits biases for integer ratios. It also provides a glimpse of the variation that can occur across cultures, which can be quite substantial,” says Nori Jacoby, the study’s lead author and a former MIT postdoc, who is now a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt, Germany.

The brain’s bias toward simple integer ratios may have evolved as a natural error-correction system that makes it easier to maintain a consistent body of music, which human societies often use to transmit information.

“When people produce music, they often make small mistakes. Our results are consistent with the idea that our mental representation is somewhat robust to those mistakes, but it is robust in a way that pushes us toward our preexisting ideas of the structures that should be found in music,” says Josh McDermott, an associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences at MIT and a member of MIT’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research and Center for Brains, Minds, and Machines.

McDermott is the senior author of the study, which appears today in Nature Human Behaviour. The research team also included scientists from more than two dozen institutions around the world.

A global approach

The new study grew out of a smaller analysis that Jacoby and McDermott published in 2017. In that paper , the researchers compared rhythm perception in groups of listeners from the United States and the Tsimane’, an Indigenous society located in the Bolivian Amazon rainforest.

To measure how people perceive rhythm, the researchers devised a task in which they play a randomly generated series of four beats and then ask the listener to tap back what they heard. The rhythm produced by the listener is then played back to the listener, and they tap it back again. Over several iterations, the tapped sequences became dominated by the listener’s internal biases, also known as priors.

“The initial stimulus pattern is random, but at each iteration the pattern is pushed by the listener’s biases, such that it tends to converge to a particular point in the space of possible rhythms,” McDermott says. “That can give you a picture of what we call the prior, which is the set of internal implicit expectations for rhythms that people have in their heads.”

When the researchers first did this experiment, with American college students as the test subjects, they found that people tended to produce time intervals that are related by simple integer ratios. Furthermore, most of the rhythms they produced, such as those with ratios of 1:1:2 and 2:3:3, are commonly found in Western music.

The researchers then went to Bolivia and asked members of the Tsimane’ society to perform the same task. They found that Tsimane’ also produced rhythms with simple integer ratios, but their preferred ratios were different and appeared to be consistent with those that have been documented in the few existing records of Tsimane’ music.

“At that point, it provided some evidence that there might be very widespread tendencies to favor these small integer ratios, and that there might be some degree of cross-cultural variation. But because we had just looked at this one other culture, it really wasn’t clear how this was going to look at a broader scale,” Jacoby says.

To try to get that broader picture, the MIT team began seeking collaborators around the world who could help them gather data on a more diverse set of populations. They ended up studying listeners from 39 groups, representing 15 countries on five continents — North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

“This is really the first study of its kind in the sense that we did the same experiment in all these different places, with people who are on the ground in those locations,” McDermott says. “That hasn’t really been done before at anything close to this scale, and it gave us an opportunity to see the degree of variation that might exist around the world.”

Cultural comparisons

Just as they had in their original 2017 study, the researchers found that in every group they tested, people tended to be biased toward simple integer ratios of rhythm. However, not every group showed the same biases. People from North America and Western Europe, who have likely been exposed to the same kinds of music, were more likely to generate rhythms with the same ratios. However, many groups, for example those in Turkey, Mali, Bulgaria, and Botswana showed a bias for other rhythms.

“There are certain cultures where there are particular rhythms that are prominent in their music, and those end up showing up in the mental representation of rhythm,” Jacoby says.

The researchers believe their findings reveal a mechanism that the brain uses to aid in the perception and production of music.

“When you hear somebody playing something and they have errors in their performance, you’re going to mentally correct for those by mapping them onto where you implicitly think they ought to be,” McDermott says. “If you didn’t have something like this, and you just faithfully represented what you heard, these errors might propagate and make it much harder to maintain a musical system.”

Among the groups that they studied, the researchers took care to include not only college students, who are easy to study in large numbers, but also people living in traditional societies, who are more difficult to reach. Participants from those more traditional groups showed significant differences from college students living in the same countries, and from people who live in those countries but performed the test online.

“What’s very clear from the paper is that if you just look at the results from undergraduate students around the world, you vastly underestimate the diversity that you see otherwise,” Jacoby says. “And the same was true of experiments where we tested groups of people online in Brazil and India, because you’re dealing with people who have internet access and presumably have more exposure to Western music.”

The researchers now hope to run additional studies of different aspects of music perception, taking this global approach.

“If you’re just testing college students around the world or people online, things look a lot more homogenous. I think it’s very important for the field to realize that you actually need to go out into communities and run experiments there, as opposed to taking the low-hanging fruit of running studies with people in a university or on the internet,” McDermott says.

The research was funded by the James S. McDonnell Foundation, the Canadian National Science and Engineering Research Council, the South African National Research Foundation, the United States National Science Foundation, the Chilean National Research and Development Agency, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Keio Global Research Institute, the United Kingdom Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Swedish Research Council, and the John Fell Fund.
