Title: A Tapestry of Triumph: The Proudest Moment of My Life

As I reflect upon the chapters of my life, each page filled with a myriad of experiences and emotions, one particular moment stands out like a vibrant thread in the intricate tapestry of my existence. The question of the proudest moment is not merely an inquiry into the past, but an exploration of the very essence of who I am and what I value. The narrative of my proudest moment weaves through the fabric of perseverance, determination, and the unwavering belief in oneself. It unfolded during my final year of secondary school, a period when the weight of expectations and the looming uncertainty of the future cast shadows upon the present. The context, an Irish Leaving Cert examination hall, symbolized both the culmination of years of academic toil and the gateway to a future yet to be unveiled. The journey to this moment was a rollercoaster of emotions and challenges. Countless late nights were spent immersed in textbooks and revision notes, the pursuit of knowledge becoming both a passion and a burden. The pressure to perform, not only for personal satisfaction but also to meet the expectations of family and teachers, added layers of complexity to the already daunting task. However, it was within the crucible of this academic challenge that my proudest moment found its roots. It was not the mere act of completing the exams or the anticipation of results that defined this pinnacle of pride. Instead, it was the realization that I had confronted my fears, embraced the grind, and emerged stronger on the other side. The proudest moment materialized as I sat in the exam hall, pen in hand, and a kaleidoscope of knowledge and experiences swirling in my mind. It was the profound awareness that I had transcended the boundaries of my own limitations, that I had harnessed the power of discipline and dedication to overcome the hurdles that once seemed insurmountable. The results, when they arrived, were a testament to this journey. While the grades on paper were a validation of academic prowess, the true triumph lay in the intangible growth that accompanied the process. I had not only conquered the subjects in the curriculum but had also conquered the self-doubt that often lurked in the corners of my mind. This proudest moment of my life extends beyond the academic realm. It signifies the understanding that true pride is not solely derived from external validations but is rooted in the internal journey of self-discovery and personal growth. It is a beacon of light illuminating the path forward, a reminder that challenges are not impediments but opportunities for evolution. In conclusion, my proudest moment encapsulates the essence of resilience, determination, and self-belief. It serves as a reminder to my fellow Irish Leaving Cert students that the pursuit of excellence is not merely about achieving results but about embracing the transformative journey that shapes us into individuals capable of facing the unknown with courage and conviction. As we stand on the precipice of the future, let us carry the torch of our proudest moments, illuminating the path forward with the radiance of our accomplishments and the strength of our character.

Personal Essay

Write a personal essay where you give your opinion on the importance of family, friends and school.

The Importance of Family, Friends and School

There are many important things in my life but to me there is nothing more important than family, friends and school.

My family consists of me, my older brother Tom, my younger sister Niamh and my mum and dad. We all live in Ballyville and while Niamh and I are at the local secondary school, Tom has gone to Dublin to university to study Engineering.

Tom and I are very similar, we both love football, we both support Liverpool and are crazy about following the mighty reds but we fought like cats and dogs over the last few years. Mum says that it is because we are too alike, something that I always deny but I secretly like being told that!

The summer before Tom left for Dublin, we couldn’t be in the same room together or there would be a fight. From me ‘borrowing’ his new shirt to him taking and ripping my new predators, there was always something to fight about. On one occasion, it almost came to blows but thankfully we both backed down. The day he left for college, we all went to Dublin to drop him off and I really couldn’t believe that I was feeling really down as we pulled away from his new house with him standing waving us off. That journey home was so horrible as I thought about all the things that I would miss about him not being there. I knew deep down that he was also feeling scared about the new adventure that awaited but I wasn’t prepared for the feeling of loneliness that night as I tried to nod off without Tom’s snoring guiding me to sleep.

Looking back on that occasion made me realise the importance of family. We would fight all day every day but when in came down to it, I realised how important Tom was in my life. He’s the person that will be there with me every step of the way. It also made me realise how we only really appreciate people when they are no longer around and it has made me even more appreciative of my mum and dad and even my little sister!

I’m really lucky to have such good friends. Dave, Barry and Ben have been my best friends since primary school and we do everything together. Like most things in life, we often take the most important things for granted and the same applies to friends. Two years ago, Dave and Ben decided to join a football team from across the county and they were our arch rivals. Myself and Barry were in complete shock when they told us. I thought they were just messing around but when I saw them land at school the following day with the St Kevin’s tracksuit, I was almost sick. I took one look at them and told them in no uncertain terms where to go. The language would not be suitable for this essay but I’m sure you get the picture. We didn’t speak for weeks and it was really awkward because our parents are friends and it was really tense at school, especially at lunch time as we eye balled each other in the corridors as we passed, each of us wanting to speak but too stubborn to back down. They even had the cheek to celebrate wildly after beating us 5-0 in a game. I could have killed both of them as I saw them jeering on their way into the dressing room.

I was fully convinced that I would never speak to either of them again but then something unexpected and terrible happened. My uncle, Jack was killed in a car crash coming home from training one evening and my whole world came tumbling down. He was such a special person and someone that I really looked up to. Over the course of the wake and the funeral I don’t know how I held it all together but what I remember most is the sight of Dave, Barry and Ben walking through my front door and each of them giving me a huge hug. In that moment, all had been forgotten and it was then I realised that friendship is way more important than things like football. I was so thankful to have them all there supporting me and we’ve never mentioned the row since. I think sometimes as friends, we just have to let things go and remember that our friendships are more important than anything else and we need to stop being so stubborn.

I never thought that I would be writing about the importance of school but since Covid-19 has made its way into our world, I now realise just how important school is to my life. I still remember the day that Leo Vradkar came onto the news and announced that school was finishing two weeks earlier than planned for Easter because of the threat of Covid-19. Laughter and joy filled the corridors as we filled our black bags with books, giddy with the excitement of a month off school. Little did we know that we wouldn’t be back until September.

The first few weeks were fine as I got used to working online but as the weeks passed, I started to really miss my friends and I really missed having the craic at school. I realised that school wasn’t just learning and books, it also played a big part in my social life as it was where I saw my friends and played lots of different sports. I was really glad to get back to school in September, even though the masks were a complete torture and everything was very different. I really began to appreciate going to school and when it was announced that they were closing again after Christmas, I really was devastated. More online classes and sitting at home, with no football to look forward to and no friends to hang out with. I’m now in Leaving Cert and have really started looking at school in a different way. I now see school as the passport to my future and I want to be a physio when I’m older so school is now more important than ever.

In life, there are lots of things that are important but we need to realise what’s really important in life and to me, they are family, friends and school.

  • Leaving Cert. English (Higher) 2019: Paper 1 Section I Comprehending Text 3
  • Back to the question >

This extract provides an excellent example of a personal essay. Four elements of the writer’s style that contribute to making this a good exemplar are personal anecdotes, a sustained reflective tone, strongly held views and judicious use of aesthetic language.

Moran brings much of her life experience to this essay and her honesty and experience engage the reader. The first paragraph provides a ‘hook’; Moran has lived an unusual life being ‘home educated’ and we want to read on. The first four paragraphs provide the reader with a lot of personal information about the author. We learn that she was ‘poor’ but visiting the library ‘twice a day’ allowed her access to worlds that she would never have the money to see.

The hallmark of a good personal essay is the ability to maintain a reflective tone and Moran certainly achieves this. From the beginning of the article she describes the library as her ‘only alma mater’ suggesting that the library provided her with the education she desired. Her reflection is evident in the fact that she calls the books ‘doors’ into different worlds. She explains that books created special places for her in a reality that was ‘so very far from anything extraordinary or exultant’. Her engagement with books has made her ‘everything I am’.

From paragraph five, Moran moves from the personal to the general. She demonstrates how libraries can nourish both the ‘mind’ and ‘soul’ and make one ‘a little more extraordinary’. She then continues to disclose that many councils are attempting to close libraries. Her strongly held views are made clear by her impassioned plea that every closure sticker reads, ‘WE CHOOSE TO BECOME MORE STUPID AND DULL’.

Her strong feelings continue in the next paragraph as she poses several questions. Her strongly held views are exhibited by her short emphatic sentences at the end of the paragraph: ‘No new libraries will be built to replace them. These libraries will be lost forever’. The finality of the statement conveys the seriousness of the situation.

In the final paragraph Moran uses personal anecdote and reflection to express her strong views. She creates the picture of her as a poor kid going to the library and feeling that she was ‘awesome’. She infers that the closure of these libraries will result in many poor kids losing this gift. She uses hyperbole and a vivid image to suggest the detrimental effects of these closures, ‘A trillion small doors closing.’

Finally, Moran uses aesthetic language to great effect in the passage. She uses a striking metaphor of ‘a clubber turning up to a rave’ to portray her excitement at going to the library. She then uses similes to convey her personal journey with books and libraries. She was ‘like a time bandit, or a spy’. This language allows the reader to engage with the text and to enter the writer’s experiences. We understand the ‘magic’ of books and are more inclined to agree with Moran’s opinion that libraries should never be closed.

This is an excellent personal essay and I really enjoyed reading it.

Introductions & Conclusions

Think of your introduction as a road map. You have been given a destination (the question) and there are lots of perfectly acceptable ways of getting there. In your introduction you lay out clearly what directions you’ll take in your essay. Your conclusion is where you look back on the highlights of your journey and recap on what you have learnt along the way!

INTRODUCTION: MAKE SURE TO USE THE WORDS FROM THE Q – but don’t begin by simply parroting back the question word for word. There is nothing worse than the predictable “I agree 100% that…..”. You could begin with a quote and/or with a dramatic statement and you must engage with the question asked.

Each introduction needs the following:

  • Thesis (main idea) = eg. Plath’s poetry is filled with the fears we all share.
  • Main topics to be discussed = (1), (2), (3)
  • Answer the Question = PR – my personal response (sentences using “I” or “me”)

Imagine the question is “ Plath’s poetry offers us a frightening yet fascinating insight into her personal demons ”

Sample introduction:

(Thesis) Plath’s poetry captures the fear in the heart of us all. Fear of failure, fear of unhappiness, fear of hitting the bottom and being unable to claw our way back to sanity. (1) In the poems “Morning Song” and “Child”, Plath is afraid that despite her best intentions she is will not be a good mother to her children. (2) In “Mirror” and “Elm” she fears that her depression & disappointment with life will destroy her. (3) In “Pheasant” and “The Arrival of the Beebox” she worries that power corrupts people in frightening ways. (PR) I found this exploration of human fears and insecurities in her poetry both fascinating & disturbing.

CONCLUSION: MAKE SURE TO USE THE WORDS FROM THE QUESTION but don’t simply repeat what you said in the introduction and don’t introduce new ideas.

Each conclusion must:

  • Link the last paragraph to the first.
  • Repeat the thesis (main idea) but rephrase it.
  • Taking each idea in turn (1. motherhood, 2. depression, 3. power) say what you learned from studying each issue & this poet in general. By doing this you will be showing how you have proved your thesis/answered the Q

 Sample conclusion:

(Thesis) Thus we see that Plath’s poetry begins in fear and ends in fear. Yet studying her poetry and getting an insight into her personal demons was for me an uplifting as well as a depressing experience. (1) I personally admired her determination to provide only the best for her children and learnt that parenting can involve many difficult challenges. (2) I found her exploration of the loss of youth in Mirror and the loss of love & sanity in Elm truly disturbing, but in a positive way these poems encouraged me to avoid putting pressure on myself to be ‘perfect’ in appearance and behaviour. (3) Finally, Plath’s poetry challenged me to avoid exploiting the power I have over nature and to have a greater respect for the environment. Accompanying Plath on her journey to the bottom was not easy but I learnt a lot about life on the way and I would strongly recommend her poetry despite it’s difficult subject matter.

Some obvious things that need to be said:

Don’t put in the bits in bold/brackets – I’m just putting them in to make it really obvious what each sentence is doing.

This is a good introduction and conclusion FOR THIS PARTICULAR ESSAY TITLE. But don’t be rubbing your hands together in glee, saying ‘ yey, I’ll just learn off this introduction and conclusion and write them if Plath comes up ‘ – you can’t write a definitive introduction and conclusion in advance because you don’t know what the question will be until you open the exam paper. And you MUST answer the question. And there’s also the not so small matter of plagiarism to consider!
