Jawahar Kala Kendra by Charles Correa: Reflection of the city’s architecture
Etched in red stone and marble, Jawahar Kala Kendra located at Jaipur stands as an abode for the amalgamation of Jaipur ’s cultural and historical aspirations. Functioning as an arts and crafts center to date, Jawahar Kala Kendra was built in 1986 and the construction was completed in the year 1991.
“Like a trail that a snail leaves in its wake as it inches forward, over the years an architect leaves behind a body of work, generated by the attitudes of work, generated by the attitude he gradually accumulates towards the agenda he deals with” – Charles Correa
At the heart of Jaipur | Jawahar Kala Kendra
The statuesque architectural marvel was envisioned and brought to fruition by renowned architect Charles Correa. Known for his distinct architectural vocabulary and fondness of traditional architecture flavors, the architectural design, and planning of Jawahar Kala Kendra is yet another showcase of Charles Correa’s exemplary architectural finesse. The center was instituted by the state government for the preservation and promotion of the cultural and spiritual values of India and also for the exhibition of the rich craft heritage of India. The center also serves as a homage to one of India’s greatest leaders and political activist Jawaharlal Nehru.
The ‘Navagraha’ at Jawahar Kala Kendra
The architectural plan of the center is an inspiration of the original city plan of Jaipur which was conceived by Maharaja Jai Singh, the second, in the mid 17th century. Being a scholar, mathematician, and astronomer, Maharaja Jai Singh had articulated his city plan based on the Shilpa Shastras having its root in the ancient Vedic mandala of nine squares or houses representing the nine planets (including two imaginary ones Ketu and Rahu). The concept of nine squares or the ‘Navagraha’ forms as the fundamental principle in the planning and allocation of spaces , function, and character of the Kala Kendra.
Each square corresponds to a particular planet of the ‘Navagraha’ and the attributes of each planet have been used to dictate the functionality of each square and also the style of architectural design implemented in each of the squares. Taking a few examples; the library is located at the square corresponding to planet Mercury or Budh which has been traditionally attributed with the quality of knowledge. The theatre corresponds to the house of Venus or ‘Shukra’ representing the arts. The central square is a void, representing the ‘Nothing which is Everything’. The external walls are marked by the placement of the astronomical symbol of each planet through cut-out openings. Each square is of dimension 30 m x 30 m x 8 m in height. The various spaces described by the plan involve the Library, printmaking studio, museum, terracotta gallery, Chaturdik gallery, Sukriti gallery, Surekha gallery, Parjit-1 gallery, Parjit-2 gallery, workshops, cafeteria, guest house, open-air theatre, theatre, and Shilpagram.
The architectural expression of the interiors
Charles Correa’s signature is vividly present in the meaningful and purposeful expression of the interiors . The interplay of natural and ambient light, shadow, and color of the material palette portray visual poetry which evokes the quintessence of the Kala Kendra. The flow of spaces and functions is immaculate and well constructed.
The partially open roofs of the square have been adorned with ‘pergola’ structures providing ample scope for the infusion of light and shade at various times of the day. The ‘pergola’ structures along with the various cutouts employed in the design allow for a narrative of patterns of light and shadow which adds to the aesthetic value of the Kala Kendra. Such a narrative also invokes a sense of appreciation for the various distinct architectural expressions of each of the squares. Local materials and inspirations have been readily used at each design opportunity. Locally available wooden bamboo sticks have been used to construct the entire space frame. The spans between beams were designed keeping in mind the use of wooden bamboo sticks.
‘Madhyavarti’ – Open-air theatre | Jawahar Kala Kendra
The open theatre acts as the anchor point of the visual cue from all the surrounding squares. Often acting as the platform for various art, cultural and literary performances, the open theatre is addressed with stepped platforms which are often used as a medium of seating. The lofty surrounding walls and the seating are clad with locally sourced sandstone. The open-air theatre is well connected to all the surrounding squares.
‘Tilam’ – Food Court at Jawahar Kala Kendra
The ambiance of the food court is set as a reminiscence of the traditional architecture of the rural areas of Rajasthan. Mud and brick masonry has been used in the construction of the structure and the roof frames are made of mild steel circular pipes covered with fiber sheet and faced with a locally available putty finish to evoke the rural architectural landscape. The artworks on the wall, seating arrangements, and other interior elements have been carefully selected to depict the innateness of rural living and its cultural richness.
Shilpgram complex
Shilpgram complex adjoins the main building of Jawahar Kala Kendra. It is curated as a rural complex with six huts symbolizing the life of various regions of Rajasthan.
For the art lover | Jawahar Kala Kendra
The Jawahar Kala Kendra has panned out to be a worthy addition to artists and art enthusiasts. Capturing the essence of time and playing out all its dimensions in a physical environment, the center truly lives up to its purpose. Workshops of dance and music, cultural festivals, and many other events are held at the center frequently. With its unique perspective and vision, Jawahar Kala Kendra portrays the architectural vision of India through the eyes of the master architect, Charles Correa.

Jaipur, Evolution of an Indian City
J aipur lies at a distance of about 200 miles from Delhi, 150 miles from Agra and 84 miles from Ajmer. Capital city of Rajasthan is located amidst the Aravali hill ranges at an altitude of about 430 m above sea level.
- Latitude – 26 55’
- Longitude – 75 50’
- The layout of the city of Jaipur wonderfully links the concept of a Shastric city with the practicalities of the chosen site.
- First, the straight line of the ridge suggested itself as the route for one of the main east-west thorough fares and building a road along its crest makes best possible use of the topography for the purpose of drainage.
- What followed then was to regularize the Amber-Sanganer road as a north-south route at right angles to it.
- The point of intersection would be one of the city’s main cross-roads (chaupar)
Although the location of the axes was determined, their extents were yet to be defined. The southern boundary of the city had to lie within the line of the Agra-Ajmer road. So by extending the NS road as far as possible southwards gives the first fixed dimension, the length of a side of a square and so establishes the size of the unit or module of the city.
A hunting lodge known as Jai Niwas. It was the king’s wish that this establishment come within the city.
A road cutting the plain from N to S linking Amber, the capital to Sanganer, the principal trading town. This road had to be preserved and controlled and therefore had to fall within the city’s boundaries
A second road ran E to W between the Mughal cities of Agra and Ajmer and placing the new city on this already established communication line would help secure its economic success. However since this was an imperial road that could not be encroached on, thus the city had to be contained to the north of this line.
Also, a natural ridge runs across the plain, N of the road and parallel to it, in a roughly EW alignment (with a slight deviation of15 deg. from the cardinal axes). The area to its S is flat while that to its N slopes down gently. In Shastric terms, this is an ideal arrangement as declivity towards the north-east Is considered the best site. In practical terms, the ridge too had to be accommodated.
The town has around it a masonry wall, 25ft. high & 9ft. thick, with eight gates.
The gates are:
- Chandpole Gate,
- Ajmeri Gate,
- Sanganeri Gate,
- Surajpole Gate,
- Gangapole Gate,
- Zorawar Singh Gate,
- and New Gate.
- The palace building covered two blocks, the town six and the remaining ninth block was not usable on account of steep hills. So this North-West ward was transferred to the South-East corner of the city, making the shape of the plan as a whole asymmetrical rather than square.
- The city’s division into nine wards was also in conformity with the Hindu caste system, which necessitated the segregation of people belonging to different communities and ranks.
- Even the lanes were named after the occupations of inhabitants such as Maniharon ka Rasta, Thatheron ka Rasta & many others.
- Following the directions of the Hindu Shilpa shastra, width of the main streets & other lanes were fixed. Thus the main streets of the city were 111ft. wide, secondary streets 55 ft. wide & the smaller ones 27ft. wide.
On the North of the main road from West to East are the Purani Basti, the Palace and Ramchandraji.
The principal bazaar leads from the western gate in the city wall, The Chandpole, passing in front of the Tripolia Gate, to the eastern city gate, the Surajpole.
- Public spaces can be divided into
CONCEPTUAL PLAN – CHAUPAR
CHAUPAR – It’s a square that occurs at the intersection of east west roads with three north south roads. Each chaupar is around 100m x 100m. Were used for public gathering on festive occasions. The distance between two chaupars is about 700m which is ideal for pedestrian movement. It has controlled façade treatment enveloping it.
View (above) of a main bazaar street – the width of the main roads was kept 39 1/4 gaz – 108 feet, secondary roads are half this size – 54 feet, the tertiary roads are 27 feet and the inner mohalla streets are 13 feet wide.
View of a chaupar today
- The main markets, havelis and temples on the main streets in Jaipur were constructed by the state in the 18th century, thus ensuring that a uniform street facade is maintained. The widths of roads were predetermined.
- According to a popular belief, the city was painted pink to celebrate the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1876, during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, lending the city the name of ‘Pink City’.
- Junctions of the main axial streets formed the two square civic open spaces called chaupars (Badi chaupar and Chhoti chaupar). The width of the square chaupars was three times that of the main street.
- Historically, the chaupars were outlets for intense social use with water structures connected by underground aqueducts, supplying numerous sources of drinking water at street level. Presently, the centre of each chaupar has square enclosures with ornamental fountains.
- The streets and chowks (central open squares in a town) of the internal chowkries (sectors) with numerous clusters or mohallas were not predetermined; hence show a mix of grid iron and organic pattern, with the basic unit of built form being the rectangular haveli.

Your article Is a fantastic Your article Is a fantastic piece of research and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. If possible would you be able to share some of your research or any sources that you have found useful? I am currently designing a hypothetical urban intervention in Agra and I have been to Jaipur and was very impressed with its urban structure to the extent that I intend to use it as a case study. Any correspondence would be much appreciated.

The case study is a research method which generally falls into the broader category of qualitative research. It is largely employed by an array of social sciences such as psychology, anthropology, education and health studies and Science and Technology Studies (STS). Even though the subjects of research, or ‘cases’, may differ between disciplines, there are certain strengths, weaknesses and limitations to case studies that can be summarised to provide a general overview of the method. In my essay, I will explore the characteristics of the case study and link them to examples of the previously documented cases. I will focus mainly on the fields of anthropology and STS as two disciplines that have made case studies their main research tool. In doing so I aim to demonstrate the ways that case studies can be a useful tool in a social scientist’s arsenal.

ABSTRACT:This encyclopedia entry provides a methodological overview of case study research in applied linguistics, and especially in the area of second language teaching and learning. The entry begins with a definition and description of case study and references to other recent reviews of this qualitative approach to research. Examples of case study research are presented, together with a discussion of issues and options that arise in conducting and reporting on such research, such as ethical considerations, sampling or selection decisions, issues of generalizability, possibilities and challenges when conducting longitudinal research, and ways of analyzing and presenting data in single-case versus multiple-case studies. Next, the entry discusses ways of including case study in mixed-method research and cites an example from the field of study-abroad research. The entry concludes with some criteria for the assessment of effective and engaging case studies.
