PLEASE NOTE: As a result of Brexit, from Autumn 2021 postgraduate students from the European Union studying at a UK university will be charged the same tuition fees as international students. Meanwhile, UK students studying their postgraduate course at a European university are also likely to incur higher tuition fees than their EU counterparts. It is advisable to check with the individual universities in the UK and Europe for up-to-date information on tuition fees for all postgraduate programs.

The process for applying  for and studying a PhD in Ireland is fairly similar to that in the UK and across the rest of Europe. Like many other countries, in Ireland it pays to network within your subject area at with other academics at while studying at university at undergraduate and masters level if you think you might want to continue in academia and study a PhD in the future, as this will make it easier to find a supervising academic. There is a good selecion of PhD specialisms on offer and some outstanding supervisors to support your studies.

This table shows a breakdown of the numbers of PhD students studying in Ireland by subject area during the academic year 2016/17.

PhD subject areas

PhD applications in Ireland

Most universities in Ireland have a similar process when it comes to applying to study a PhD. Those students who are interested in doing any type of research degree, such as a PhD or a Masters by Research , should make an informal enquiry in the first instance. Once contact has been made with the university then an appointment to discuss the research proposal will be made. This is only a provisional research proposal and once a supervising academic has been agreed on, the formal application process begins. Finding a supervising academic is a little easier if you have been networking throughout your postgraduate studies. PhD applications are made throughout the year, however, students can only start in January and September, so apply well in advance of when you wish to start your PhD. Trinity College Dublin has some useful information on the PhD application process .

Formal PhD application

The formal application for a PhD is made directly to the university and consists of the students' research proposal. The research proposal varies by subject area, but generally it will consist of the aims of the research and explanation of the topic, the hypotheses, research methodology  and a bibliography with references. If you are currently studying at the masters degree level, then you will find your department or university will have guidance on writing a research proposal. Many universities, such as the University of Limerick , also have a process for those potential PhD students who do not have a supervising academic to apply for a PhD position through an Expression of Interest form.

PhD admissions

Once you have completed your personal statement , your academic record has been assessed and your language skills  have been proven you will then, hopefully, be accepted as a PhD student . The department you have applied to will assess your application, on the strength of your past academic record, your research proposal and also on how your proposed research aims work with aims and future direction of the university and the department. This means you should choose the supervising academic and the university you apply to very carefully.

PhD study modes & length of study

So how long does it take to complete a PhD ? Most PhD students study on a full-time basis and in Ireland this means that a PhD can take anywhere from two to four years to complete. Part-time PhD students tend to be self-funded and take anywhere from four to eight years to complete their research. PhD students tend to be campus-based, but an increasing number of students can research online .

PhD costs & funding opportunities

PhD tuition fees are set by the individual university in Ireland and vary considerably between institutions. Students can expect the PhD tuition fees to be anything from €6,000 to €15,000 per year for Irish, UK, EU and international students. Most universities have funding opportunities available for those who are self-funding their studies.

PhD studentships

There are some PhD studentships  available in Ireland, particularly for the study of Medicine, Healthcare and in Technology-based subject areas. This is in part because of the large number of Tech companies that are based in Ireland who are funding research. The Royal College of Surgeons  has studentships available in areas of research that are part of their core research aims. The National University of Ireland has offered studentships since 1910 and these are available to any potential PhD student who is based at any partner institution of the National University of Ireland.

Data Science is concerned with the development of scalable methods for the curation and analysis of large data sets, in order to derive insights and actionable knowledge from these for predictive analytics and other aspects of decision support. Methods in Data Science typically build on best practices in machine learning and statistics with applications in the analysis of structured data as well as of semi-structured and unstructured data, including numerical, textual and image data. Data sources can be in Internet of Things and other sensor data streams, social media, large text collections such as reporting, image collections, video material, etc. In addition to machine learning and statistics, scientific methods specific to each data type will originate from areas including Natural Language Processing, image processing, stream reasoning, etc.

What Our Students Say

Andrea

Andrea Barraza |   PhD Student at the Data Science Institute

My research lies in the intersection between Recommendation Systems and Reinforcement Learning. I first arrived at DSI to carry out a Research Internship when I was a Masters student in my home country. I was offered the opportunity to continue my work as a PhD, and I am so glad I decided to stay. DSI is a vibrant multicultural place. At DSI, I have grown as a researcher and had the opportunity to share my work at several venues around the world. A PhD is a rewarding but challenging journey. This journey becomes easier when you have the necessary support from great colleagues and mentors.

Felipe

Felipe Arruda Pontes |   MSc student at the Data Science Institute

Doing my post-grad in DSI has been an incredible experience. The institution facilities are great for studying and doing my research, while the staff and students are a great source of learning in many different fields. Another good point for studying here is the location, which is close to the city centre, and yet it has a great outdoors environment, full of trees, rivers and calm places where one can take a break.

Sina

Sina Ahmadi |   PhD Student at the Data Science Institute

After doing my master's in France, I joined DSI in 2018 to pursue a PhD in computer science &engineering. I was expecting to find myself somewhere like the laboratories and research centres where I previously worked: a place where everyone only cares about his/her business without minding much the quality of life and the relationships with other colleagues. DSI has proved to be a different place where a deep connection between members is made, particularly, thanks to various meetings & seminars that are regularly held throughout the year. Originating from over 30 countries, DSI members interact in a constructive way which makes collaboration easy & fun. The friendly atmosphere at DSI has made my research experience pleasant and unique with a rich cultural experience. Research-wise, I am very happy to be a member of an active community of researchers working on natural language processing and artificial intelligence. There are currently over 20 researchers who are specifically working on language technology at the Unit for Linguistic Data and Unit for Natural Language Processing. I am working on linking monolingual and cross-lingual lexicographic data.

Our complete guide on phd study in ireland.

Herilalao Study in Ireland Leave a comment

Ireland has one of the world’s oldest higher education systems and has been a center of learning in Europe since as far as 500 AD. With this many centuries of experience in dispensing education and training, you’ll certainly get access to world-class PhD resources at its universities. Moreover, being part of the European Higher Education Area, Ireland follows the Bologna process, offering PhDs as third-cycle degree-programs. Here’s our overview of how a PhD in Ireland works: structure, requirements, duration, funding and more.

Table of Contents

Benefits of doing a PhD in Ireland

The decision to do a PhD stem from considering several factors: your field of study and research, the university you plan to do your research at, and your goals. Ireland has a number of universities with an excellent reputation, nationally and internationally. Here are some of the benefits you’ll gain if you choose to do your PhD in Ireland.

You don’t necessarily need a master to do a PhD in Ireland

Unlike in many countries, where it’s mandatory for a PhD candidate to hold a master’s degree, in Ireland, you may directly jump from a bachelor’s degree to a PhD. The possibility to do your PhD depends on the program the student is applying for and their academic goals. So, make sure to check with your university whether a master is part of the requirements for doctoral studies in your institution.

You can conduct research in a subject you are passionate about

Because a PhD can be challenging in so many ways, in order to have the required resilience to pursue it, you should make sure to choose the right topic for your research project. Start by choosing a subject you are really enthusiastic about, that you are eager to deepen your knowledge about. The idea is to give yourself this extra motivation to carry on your research and achieve your goals.

You are allowed to contact a supervisor of interest

This means getting to know beforehand a potential supervisor to find out if they share your interest in your research topic. It is also a great way to find out if you can work well with this person. Since you’ll have to interact a lot with this person for the duration of your PhD, this proactive approach can only be beneficial.

You have access to several scholarships and funding programs

We will elaborate a bit more on this subject later in this guide. But know just that it is rare to not have any funding option for a PhD research in Ireland. There are programs both for European and non-European students. They are either from the government of Ireland, the Irish Research Council and even the universities themselves.

You benefit from a 2-year visa extension after you graduate

At the completion of your studies in Ireland, you have a 24-month stay back option you can take advantage of. This is one of the reasons why Ireland is a popular study destination in Europe. Students can apply for an extension of their visa for 2 more years in order to seek employment in Ireland.

How long is a PhD course in Ireland?

The typical duration of a full-time PhD in Ireland is 3 to 4 years. A part-time PhD, on the other hand, will take 5 to 6 years to complete. The academic year in the country is the same as in the UK, with 2 semesters a year: from September to December, then from January to April. In case the students don’t complete the requirements for their degree within these timelines, they can apply for a permission to continue their research.

Supervision and support during the PhD

During your PhD, your host university will assign you at least one supervisor. This supervisor is an active academic whose main responsibilities are to manage and oversee your research and studies. In some case, there might be a co-supervisor who supports the primary supervisor.

There is also a Research Study Panel (RSP) whose role is to monitor your progress, provide advice and support the student-supervisor relationship. You will be assigned a RSP within the first trimester upon your registration. Moreover, you’ll have to meet them at least twice in the first year and once a year the following years.

Assessment and examination

Upon their registration, full-time PhD students initially enroll into a Masters of Philosophy (MPhil). They must then complete an assessment in their first year to upgrade to a PhD.

In the following years, students conduct research and produce a written thesis of up to 100,000 words in length. This dissertation must include details such as the context, description, methodology and result of the research, and will be assessed during an oral examination (viva voce).

Moreover, before they submit their thesis, students need the approval of their primary supervisor. Furthermore, the oral defense of the dissertation is assessed by an examination committee including an internal and an external examiner.

Applying for a PhD in Ireland

As already mentioned earlier, a master is not mandatory for your admission in a PhD program in Ireland. Also, application for a PhD program in the country is pretty straightforward. You’ll get admission as long as you comply to the requirements set by your university of choice.

Read our guide on the requirements to study at Irish universities .

A proof of an excellent command of the English language is also mandatory, with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5. Along with this, you have to provide your latest academic transcripts (master or bachelor’s degree), as some programs may be more competitive than others.

Moreover, as in most PhD application, you need to provide a research proposal. It should include details about the research you wish to conduct, how you will do it and why it should be approved. This research proposal should be approved by a panel of expert before you can start your PhD program.

Like for the master’s degree in Ireland , it can happen that your university asks you to apply via the Postgraduate Application Centre ( PAC ). It’s an online registration portal for postgraduate studies for most Irish universities, which guides you throughout all the application process. The advantage of the PAC platform is that you can make multiple application, with a €50 fee.

PhD fees in Ireland for international students

The cost of a PhD in Ireland starts at €9,000 a year for international students. But some programs may cost as high as €30,000 per year. And business studies and medicine are the most expensive ones. Moreover, it’s quite rare for a PhD to not come with some form of scholarship, grant or bursary. Many universities provide monetary support, that are available for both local and international students.

PhD scholarships in Ireland for international students

Here are some options of funding for your PhD studies in the Emerald Isle.

Postgraduate scholarship program from the Government of Ireland

The Irish Department of Education and Skills in partnership with the Irish Research Council offers a scholarship to fund a PhD or a master in any discipline at a university in Ireland. This scholarship is open to both local and international students, who are eligible as long as they have a bachelor’s degree (or an international equivalent).

The scholarship includes:

  • €18,500 stipend per year
  • A contribution of up to €5,750 per year to the tuition fees
  • An annual contribution of €3,250 to the student’s research expenses.
Learn more on the website of the Irish Research Council .

Enterprise Partnership Program

It’s a system that joins research students with a partner enterprise for their postgraduate degree. The student’s research topic should then be directly related to the partner organization which can be a company, a governmental body or a charity. And by the end of the degree, students will gain both research and professional skills.

Find out more about this scholarship .

To benefit from this scholarship, applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree. The program is open both to domestic and foreign students, and it includes the same benefits as for the Irish Government postgraduate scholarship.

Scholarships from Irish universities

The last option of PhD funding is from the university you intend to apply to in Ireland. It’s common for universities to have in-house incentives for researchers, whether it is a tuition fee reduction or a fully funded PhD opportunity.

Read also our resource on the types of scholarships in Ireland .

Can I work while doing a PhD in Ireland?

The answer is yes! You can definitely get a job to earn an extra-income while doing your PhD, without the need of a work permit. However, if you’re a non-European citizen, you’ll need a valid Irish Resident Permit (IRP) as well as the Stamp 2, which allow you to work a maximum of 20 hours a week during the academic year. And like for any student job in Ireland , you can work up to 40 hours a week during holidays.

You can check our guide on the subject to find out all the other requirements to work during your studies. Moreover, you can also get an employment contract with your host university. This is the case for students who enroll in a structured PhD with job placement or engagement with a research enterprise partner included. Check with your university to find out more on the subject.

A PhD is the highest postgraduate degree that helps individuals venture into their respective fields as a professor or a scientist. Ireland has become a top choice for students who want to pursue higher education . Competitiveness Yearbook, the Irish Education System is ranked among the top 20 in Europe. There are many PhD opportunities in Ireland as it is organized under two broad pathways – Universities or Institutes of Technology. Following are the benefits you will get if you study PhD in Ireland.

  • Universities in Ireland adopt innovative teaching methods. The country has the most developed doctoral training programs and laboratories focusing on providing the best research expertise to the students.
  • Though most doctoral programmes are taught in the universities, the Institutes of Technologies provide high-quality training on vocational subject areas backed by enterprise partnerships.
  • Unlike many other countries that extend their doctorate to five years, PhD in Ireland is three to four years.
  • The heavily practical and research-oriented education system, which is updated at regular intervals, is one of the best PhD optionsfor Indian students.
  • The universities in Ireland that offer PhD are some of the highly ranked reputed institutions such as National University of Ireland, Trinity College Dublin (the oldest university in the world), University of Limerick, University College Cork, and University of Limerick many more.
  • Another benefit of pursuing a PhD in Ireland is that you will be able to apply for a post-study work permit after completing your course. This allows international students to stay back for two years and search for a job or gain work experience.

The application procedure to apply for a PhD programme in Ireland involves several steps. Ensure that you have your research proposal, personal statement, and transcript ready. After deciding which university you want to study in, here are the steps that you need to follow to apply for their PhD degree:

  •   Find a supervisor :

After going through the university’s website, you need to choose one or two potential supervisors in your area of study who will guide you throughout your research. Reach out to them through email. However, they receive multiple applications from students on a day-to-day basis. Therefore, to make sure that your application stands out, you need to customize it accordingly. The introductory mail should contain your name, academic qualifications, previous research experiences, why you want to pursue doctoral studies, and how the supervisor’s research area matches your research goals.

  •   Make a research proposal:

Your research proposal is one of the key things for your application procedure for PhD in Ireland. Generally, it is 1500-2000 words which should include the aim of your research and hypothesis and your area of study.

  •   Prepare a personal statement and get your transcripts ready:

The personal statement should include an overview of why you want to opt for doctoral studies, what aspect of the subject area interests you, and how your previous work experiences have shaped you.

A transcript is a document that compiles the results of all the subjects you have studied in your previous degree. Many universities do not provide a transcript. In that case, you need to request your university to issue it.

  •   Search for a person who can refer you:

Some universities in Ireland ask for references from people from your previous institutions to validate your academic abilities. The person who will be referring you can either fill up the referee form available on the school’s site or submit a letter of reference in their own words.

  •   Complete the paper-based application process:

Your application will be reviewed by the supervisor, college graduate school board, and school graduate committee. After getting their approval, you will go through a paper-based application procedure. You need to provide your contact details, CV, and required documents like research proposal, transcript, personal statement, and references.

After applying for a PhD in Ireland, international students need to prove their capability in the English language as it is the medium of instruction. You need to appear in either of the tests- International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or Pearson English Language Test (PTE).

These tests assess the candidates based on their writing , speaking, reading, and listening skills. Listed below are

Every higher education institution has a different fee structure as the programmes vary. The parameters based on which your tuition fees can vary are the popularity and ranking of your university, if you will be pursuing PhD opportunities in Ireland for part-time or full-time, your subject, and your nationality. Students belonging to countries from non-European Union and non-European Economic Area have to pay 2-3 times the tuition fees than a domestic student.

Usually, the annual fees for doctoral degrees are approximately €6,000-€9000 (INR 5,04,051.41 INR-7,55,961.42). However, courses like business studies or medicine charge a substantially higher price costing between €20,000-€30,000 (INR 16,79,914.26 -25,19,878.07) per year.

There are a lot of students who get worried by the high tuition fees or cost of living. However, there are many universities and government programs that sponsor PhDs in Ireland for Indian students. While some waive 100% tuition fee, others provide a scholarship in which a percentage of tuition fees is waived. Universities that offer PhD in Ireland get funds from charities, research councils, and industry partners. These funds help universities provide scholarships to deserving students, and some even provide stipends.

Here are some of the popular scholarships available in Ireland for PhD students.

The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship issued by the Higher Education Authority offers around 60 scholarship programmes to meritorious international students. The benefits include a stipend of INR 8,70,000 and fully funded tuition and registration fees.

Here’s a list of the educational institutions in Ireland which are affiliated with the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship.

  • Waterford University of Technology
  • Dundalk Institute of Technology
  • University of College, Dublin
  • National University of Ireland, Galway

Besides, various funding programmes are provided by the Irish Research Council, which offer three funding schemes for PhD in Ireland.

  • The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship – Available for international students seeking to pursue PhD in Ireland and supports academic research in all subject areas.
  • Enterprise Partnership Program – Aims to sponsor meritorious researchers keen on developing their key transferable skills.
  • Employment-Based Postgraduate Programme – Specific universities partner with various employers and provide this scholarship.

One advantage of pursuing a PhD in Ireland for Indian students is that they encourage advanced research and practical experience. Therefore, you will be able to gain a deeper insight into the subject-specific techniques and develop adequate skills in research work. In turn, these skills help students widen their scope of work as industry researchers.

An Irish university’s curriculum is designed to engage both academic research and the development of a range of skills that would make you a desirable candidate in front of potential employers. Many universities in Ireland tie-up with commercial enterprises and stakeholders who provide input to design the PhD programmes. Therefore, a PhD scholar from Ireland possesses advanced academic subject knowledge and is a professional who is job-ready.

O’Neill, 47, who was born in the Republic of Ireland but raised in the north, comes from a family with links to the militant Irish Republican Army. Her father was imprisoned as an IRA member, an uncle raised money for the group and two of her cousins were shot — one fatally — by security forces.

O’Neill has been criticized for attending events commemorating the IRA and told an interviewer there was “no alternative” to the group’s armed campaign during the Troubles, a period of about 30 years of violent conflict over the future of Northern Ireland, which ended with the Good Friday accords.

Sinn Fein Vice President Michelle O'Neill walks through Stormont Parliament Buildings in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024. O'Neill is poised to make history by becoming the first Irish nationalist leader of Northern Ireland as the government returned to work after a two-year boycott by unionists.(AP Photo/Peter Morrison)

“I don’t think any Irish person ever woke up one morning and thought that conflict was a good idea, but the war came to Ireland,” she said in 2022. “I think at the time there was no alternative, but now, thankfully, we have an alternative to conflict and that’s the Good Friday agreement.”

At 15, O’Neill became pregnant and her mother quit work to help raise her granddaughter so O’Neill could stay in school. She said the Catholic school she attended had not been supportive and pregnancy had been a “very negative” experience.

“You were nearly made to feel girls like you can’t be at school, that kind of a thing,” she said.

As a member of Sinn Fein, the party affiliated with the IRA, O’Neill was elected in 2005 to the Dungannon Borough Council, replacing her father. She was elected to the Stormont Assembly in 2007.

Both O’Neill and Little-Pengelly, 44, grew up under the shadow of the Troubles and pledged to work together to bridge divides that once seemed insurmountable.

“The past with all its horror can never be forgotten, and nor will it be allowed to be rewritten but while we are shaped by the past, we are not defined by it,” Little-Pengelly said. “The experience of my childhood gave me the drive and desire to make a different future not just for myself, but to do all that I could and can to ensure a better future for all of us.”

Former Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, who helped broker the historic peace agreement, was in the gallery to witness O’Neill’s nomination along with her grown up daughter and son.

“As an Irish republican, I pledge cooperation and genuine honest effort with those colleagues who are British, of a unionist tradition, and who cherish the Union,” O’Neill said. “This is an assembly for all — Catholic, Protestant and dissenter.”

U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed the restoration of the Northern Ireland executive and assembly. In a statement from the White House, he said, “I look forward to seeing the renewed stability of a power-sharing government that strengthens the peace dividend, restores public services, and continues building on the immense progress of the last decades.”

Clare Rice, an academic researcher in politics, said O’Neill’s new position was “hugely symbolic” and “hugely significant” despite there being no difference beyond semantics from her previous role as deputy first minister.

“All eyes today will be on that symbolic nomination,” Rice told the BBC. “That is going to be the story that comes out of today, second only to the fact that we’re here at all.”

The return to government came exactly two years after a DUP boycott over a dispute about trade restrictions for goods coming into Northern Ireland from Great Britain. Northern Ireland’s 1.9 million people were left without a functioning administration as the cost of living soared and public services were strained.

An open border between the north and the republic was a key pillar of the peace process that ended the Troubles, so checks were imposed instead between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K.

An agreement a year ago between the U.K. and the EU, known as the Windsor Framework , eased customs checks and other hurdles but didn’t go far enough for the DUP, which continued its boycott.

The U.K. government this week agreed to new changes that would eliminate routine checks and paperwork for most goods entering Northern Ireland, although some checks will remain for illegal goods or disease prevention.

Jeffrey Donaldson, leader of the DUP, speaks to the media at Stormont Parliament Buildings in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024. Sinn Fein vice president Michelle O'Neill is set to become the first nationalist first minister following a two-year political collapse. Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will gather at Parliament Buildings at Stormont on Saturday for a sitting where ministers will be appointed to a powersharing executive, bringing an end to the impasse.(AP Photo/Peter Morrison)

The new changes included legislation “affirming Northern Ireland’s constitutional status” as part of the U.K. and gives local politicians “democratic oversight” of any future EU laws that might apply to Northern Ireland.

The U.K. government also agreed to give Northern Ireland more than 3 billion pounds ($3.8 billion) for its battered public services once the Belfast government is back up and running.

“I believe that my party has delivered what many said we couldn’t,” DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson said outside the assembly chamber in Stormont. “We have brought about change that many said was not possible, and I believe that today is a good day for Northern Ireland, a day when once again our place in the United Kingdom and its internal market is respected and protected in our law and restored for all our people to enjoy the benefits of our membership of the union.”

Former DUP leader Edwin Poots was elected as speaker of the chamber.
