On-the-go homework tote bags work best when they don’t have to be checked every day. Every weekend I clean out our car and homework bags and update them for the next week. I like to include a healthy snack and a water bottle to prevent after-school energy dips. (Non-perishable snacks work best if you leave your homework bag in your car during the week.)

Reduce homework stress and prepare ahead of time by creating a portable homework tote bag. Your children will always have the supplies they need, and you will be prepared when appointments or activities go longer than planned.

What to include in your homework tote bag:

• Pencils and erasers
• Plastic pencil sharpener
• Crayons or colored pencils
• Notebook paper
• Clipboard (include extra notebook paper clipped in)
• Water bottle
• Healthy snack: fruit, granola bars, nuts
• Headphones (These are great for children who are easily distracted.)

Organize your homework bag by placing loose objects in zip lock or pencil pouches. I like to organize pencils, erasers, and sharpeners in a separate pencil pouch. I place colored pencils, scissors, glue sticks, and other art supplies in their own small bag.

Additional activity ideas for your homework bag:

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reducing children’s screen time. Encourage your children to find alternate activities if they finish their homework early. Include a fun activity book or reading book as an option! If you have younger children, include “homework” for them to complete in the form of colorful workbooks.

Some additional non-media after school activities are:

• Write a story or funny cartoon and draw a picture.
• Write and solve your own word problems using the math strategies in your homework.
• Red pen challenge: write two sentences with grammar errors. Correct them with a red crayon or pencil.
• Choose three math facts to memorize. Write them down and memorize them. For example: 8+7=15 12-3=9 7×7=49
• Design a new invention and label the parts. What problem does the invention solve?

Last week my oldest started school for the first time. After a week of school stuff thrown all over the house, I’ve realised that we need a school bag storage area. Somewhere to store his bag, books, hat and all the other paraphernalia that comes along with starting school. Who’d have thought one little person would need so much stuff!

After some serious scouring of Pinterest, Google and my favourite bloggers I have found 16 simple, practical and gorgeous school bag storage ideas that I think will work in almost any home. Now just to choose between them…

Baskets for bits and bobs

The little baskets that are part of this school bag storage area would be great for homework and notes from school. I also love how it doesn't look super "schoolish" and would still be useful for coats and hats as this kids grow up. There is a tutorial here . 

Small and manageable

This compact school bag area (found on  Better Homes & Garden's ) is a great option if you are short on space. Most of these items can be found at Ikea and it would be quick and affordable to make. 

Organise everything

If you've got plenty of space (or maybe even a whole room!) this storage bench with drawers, hangers and baskets is the ultimate school bag organisation area.

Simple hooks work well

Everything in Emily Clarke's home is simply stunning, and her school bag organisation area is no exception. I love how she's displayed the kids artworks to make it a decorative as well as practical area. 

Kitchen command centre

While not quite as pretty as some of the more elaborate set ups, this simple kitchen comand centre by From Overwhelmed to Organised has everything you'd need to keep all the school stuff together. 

Putting a corner to good use

I love this idea for a corner space. So often I overlook corners in our home and they become just a wasted open space but this solution makes excellent use of an otherwise unusable area. 

Small space solution

If space is at a premium at your place (it sure is at ours!) then this option from The Crafting Chicks will fit snuggly behind the front door. Simple and fuss free. 

Eye pleaser

Isn't this gorgeous! Even if you don't have school kids, this is a super practical and attractive storage area for the whole family. You could use the first letter of your surname or a few letters for each member of the family.
