Welcome to the Chemistry Department of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. The department’s research program is among the most important research initiatives in India. With current faculty strength of 34 faculty members and their collaborators worldwide, and with nearly 300 Ph. D. scholars at any time of the year for the last several years, the contribution of the department to India’s basic and applied chemistry research is on par with the best in the country and is internationally well recognized. The facilities available in the department include state-of-the-art NMR spectrometer, Atomic Force Microscope, single crystal and powder XRD, MALDI and GCMS, to name a few. In addition to serving the needs of the department, these instrument facilities are available to researchers in other departments of the Institute and to scientists throughout the country. The service afforded by the department to the scientific community in India has few parallels.
The Ph. D. programme of the department is as comprehensive as sustained quality research in any area would demand. Also, students are admitted through a rigorous screening process after a basic qualifying requirement to attend a personal interview which is now conducted throughout the year. The selected students are generally given the freedom of choice of joining research groups and must complete course work and a comprehensive examination within the first two years in most cases and with few exceptions. They must give a research seminar within the first three years on the subject of their research and present reports every six months until they are ready to graduate; at that time they must give a second seminar giving details of their work and publications, and follow it by a presentation of a Synopsis of the actual thesis document before submitting the thesis. All of this is monitored by a Doctoral Committee, which oversees the progress at regular intervals and is unique to every scholar.
Our Department also offers its felicitations to all the Ph. D. graduates from the department who are engaged in academic, scientific, and professional endeavor in India and abroad and salutes those who have retired from an active professional career, for their distinguished services.
Broad discipline
Inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical & theoretical chemistry.

M.SC. PH.D - CHEMISTRY
The NMIMS (Deemed to be University) introduced Ph.D. programme in Chemistry in July 2007. The salient feature of this programme is the emphasis being laid on the overall development of laboratory skills of a research student coupled with an expansion of his/her knowledge base through an interdisciplinary course work comprising lectures and practicals in the first year of the course and subsequently fine tuning these skills in a particular area of specialization. While the research student will have ample opportunity to acquire hands-on training on modern, sophisticated instruments/equipment wherever necessary, he/she will also be able to benefit from the expertise of one or more supervisors, wherever needed.
The M.Sc. course work in the first two years extends over three semesters class room teaching and one semester industrial training. After the M.Sc. course work the students will commence the Ph.D. program subject to passing of a qualifying test. The qualifying test involves assessment of the research aptitude of the students by the Research and Recognition Committee (RRC). Each student then undertakes research in a specialized area on a topic to be decided by the student in consultation with the Research Supervisor(s) following approval from the Research and Recognition Committee (RRC). The duration of the research project would be minimum 3 years.

PhD student in Inorganic Chemistry
Job information, offer description.
at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry . Closing date: 23 April 2024 .
The Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry (MMK) is, with about 160 employees, one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Natural sciences at Stockholm University. A significant part of the teaching activities is at the undergraduate level with courses in General, Physical, Inorganic, and Analytical Chemistry. The teaching at the graduate level focuses on the master programs in Sustainable Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. Research activities of MMK focus primarily on materials, and include different classes such as ceramics, glasses, self-assembled, porous materials, and soft matter. The projects often encompass synthesis, and characterization by X-ray, neutron diffraction, electron microscopy, electron crystallography, solid-state NMR, and computer modelling of materials with a potential for various applications. Research activities in the area of Analytical Chemistry focus on developing advanced analytical techniques for studies of organic compounds and biomolecules.
Project description Project title: Development of high-throughput electron diffraction techniques for automated phase analysis and structure determination
Project leaders: Prof. Xiaodong Zou (main supervisor) and Dr. Gerhard Hofer (co-supervisor)
Structure information is essential for understanding the properties and functions for all materials and molecules. Powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction are the most commonly-used techniques for phase analysis and structure determination, but encounter challenges when analyzing multiphasic samples and nanocrystals. During the discovery of new materials, major efforts and time are often spent to optimize synthesis conditions to obtain large crystals and pure samples. Recent development of new electron crystallographic techniques can overcome these challenges and provide new opportunities for discovery of novel structures and materials. Prof. Zou’s research group has more than 35 years’ experience in developing new electron crystallographic techniques and is internationally leading in crystal structural analysis by electron crystallography.
This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. Read more: https://wise-materials.org
All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School ( https://wise-materials.org/research/graduate-school ), an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers and industry.
The objectives of the PhD project are to establish automation strategies and develop high-throughput serial (rotation) electron diffraction pipeline for phase analysis, orientation mapping and structure determination of inorganic, organic and protein nanocrystals. The new pipeline will be implemented on the new high-throughput analytical scanning transmission electron microscope (recently granted as part of the WISE technology platforms, https://wise-materials.org/research/technology-platforms/ ). The goal is to make electron diffraction into an automated, fast and reliable technique for materials screening and structure characterization.
