Introduction:

The freedom of a country depends on its citizens. Every country has a few brave hearts who willingly give up their lives for their countrymen.

Freedom fighters play a very important role in making any country independent. India is a land of endless freedom fighters.

Many are known and many are unsung. All of them have their way to fight for freedom like some have chosen the path of Non-violence. While some show their bravery with pistols in their hands and swords.

Our Independence was hard fought the British ruled over our leads for a long time. But then, there are heroes, aren’t there? There are always heroes.

The ones who stand up and fight. some get the spotlight while the same stay in the dark and contribute just as much as others.

The bodies are true for India’s freedom fighters as well. For those who fought equally hard but never got any share of the limelight, because they simply never cared.

There are so many freedom fighters of India who contributed to the Independence movement but their names faded into the darkness.

Our country, India was colonized by the British. Our freedom fighters fought against the British for our independence.

Some Important freedom fighters of India are Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Jawaharlal Nehru, and many more.

But there are many freedom fighters who we probably haven’t heard. Most of them sacrificed their lives in getting independence for India. we call them the “Unsung Heroes of India”.

Their only focus was seeing an independent India. But as citizens of this country, we should know about some of them.

Here are some freedom fighters you probably haven’t heard of. These unsung heroes are also the reason we live in a free country.

We must honor their sacrifices and aim to live together in harmony and peace ensuring social justice. In the freedom struggle, India has many unsung heroes, who devoted his life.

Matangini Hazra : Hazra was part of the Quit India movement and Non-co-operation movement during one procession, she continued to advance With the Indian flag even after even being short trice. she kept shouting “Vande Mataram”.

Peer Ali Khan : He was one of the initial rebels of India. he was part of the 1857 freedom struggle and among the 14 people who were given capital punishment due to their role in the freedom movement . Even still, his work inspired many who followed but generations later, his name just faded away.

Garimella Satyanarayana : He was an inspiration for the people of Andhra, As a writer, he used his skill to write influential poems and songs to motivate the people of Andhra to join the movement against the British.

Begum Hazrat Mahal : She was a vital part of the 1857 Indian Rebellion. After her husband was exiled, she took charge of Awadh and even seized control of Lucknow during the rebellion. Later, Begam Hazrat had to retreat to Nepal, where she died.

Conclusion:

This August 15, India will celebrate 74 years of Independence from the British Raj and also remember the 200- year old struggle for freedom of our countrymen.

The most famous freedom fighters are undoubtedly Mahatma Gandhi , Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Mangal Pandey, and so on, but there are also others who contributed to the independence movement but their names faded into the darkness.

There were many freedom fighters who looked into the eye of the tyrannical British rulers and dared to raise the slogan of an independent India.

Some are celebrated all across the world among the Indian community while there is, remain anonymous to the masses today.

Schools help teach students who “we” are. And as Howard Zinn points out in his essay “Unsung Heroes,” too often the curricular “we” are the great slaveholders, plunderers, imperialists, and captains of industry of yesteryear.

Thus when we teach about the genocide Columbus launched against the Taínos, or Washington’s scorched-earth war on the Iroquois, or even Abraham Lincoln’s promise in his first inaugural address to support a constitutional amendment making slavery permanent in Southern states, some students may experience this new information as a personal loss. In part, as Zinn suggests, this is because they’ve been denied a more honorable past with which to identify — one that acknowledges racism and exploitation, but also highlights courageous initiatives for social equality and justice.

A high school student recently confronted me: “I read in your book A People’s History of the United States about the massacres of Indians, the long history of racism, the persistence of poverty in the richest country in the world, the senseless wars. How can I keep from being thoroughly alienated and depressed?”

It’s a question I’ve heard many times before. Another question often put to me by students is: Don’t we need our national idols? You are taking down all our national heroes — the Founding Fathers, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, John F. Kennedy. Granted, it is good to have historical figures we can admire and emulate. But why hold up as models the 55 rich white men who drafted the Constitution as a way of establishing a government that would protect the interests of their class — slaveholders, merchants, bondholders, land speculators?

Why not recall the humanitarianism of William Penn, an early colonist who made peace with the Delaware Indians instead of warring on them, as other colonial leaders were doing?”

Classroom Story

“ Unsung Heroes ” is a lesson I’ve used every year. It is always a hit with my students, who are engaged and ask important questions during this unit. When students embody those heroic figures I hope they emulate, it is also important identity work which is critical during the middle school years that my students find themselves in.

Students always say that they never knew there were so many people who had to struggle for equality in the U.S. It is edifying for me when students say, “She looks like me!” regarding one of the heroes, or otherwise find ways to relate their own lives to the lives of figures who helped in the struggle for equality.

When are you going to add in the story of Catholic institution building, anti-Catholic bias in the 19th and twentieth centuries, and add the names of Catholic women, especially nuns and sisters, who worked to overcome barriers erected by the majority culture during this time? None of this is in textbooks I have read over the course of my college education: from freshman through the doctoral levels.

Teachers, let’s make sure we use this plan and even expand on it when helping students choose a topic for their National History Day 2017 project. This year’s theme is “Taking a Stand in History”…its begging our students to research those who have stood for justice.

Thank you for adding truth to the study of our past… When humans hide the imperfections and demons among us, truth loses and the injustices and imperfections in our past keep their un-warranted power.

Unsung heroes are the ones who are not praised and appreciated for their contributions to the freedom struggle. Many freedom fighters have struggled to free India, and some of them are known to us, like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, etc. Still, some are not appreciated enough for having struggled for India. India's independence has become a historic movement to bring a better future to this diverse nation. India was under the British Raj for a very long time, and the Indians had no freedom. Some of the heroes of our country were determined to take a step to fight for independence from the British Raj.

Many freedom Fighters came in and joined palms collectively to fight in opposition to injustice and free the nation with delight. Some of them, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh , and others, are widely regarded as the faces of the free India movement. Still, different heroes have sacrificed their lives for the nation's bright future. Some heroes are Birsa Munda, Kamala Das, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, Khudiram Bose, and so on. In one way or another, these people have made significant contributions toward the nation's freedom.

India gained independence from the rule of the British after almost 200 years. This resulted in the birth of the freedom struggle movement in 1857 , which lasted nearly 90 years and was a trying time for all Indians. This turned into a big struggle, and plenty of people in the country have been part of this brilliant freedom conflict.

Some of the best-known freedom fighters of the freedom struggle are Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, Rani Lakshmibai , and so on; however, there are numerous other names within the listing of freedom-fighting parties in the kingdom. These are the names of freedom fighters who took part in India's independence struggle, but there is no mention of their names or evidence of their bravery in Indian history.

These freedom fighters are said to be the unsung heroes of the war because no one in the country knew their names or their contributions to the nation; consequently, they were named as unsung heroes. Courageous Indian revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Mangal Pandey have also been part of the list of various unsung heroes of the country; however, their names have been highlighted because of the films of Indian cinema.

India had to fight for independence from the Britishers for almost 90 years. India has had numerous rulers, the most recent of whom were the British, who ruled for a long time. India was colonised by the British, and freedom fighters wanted independence from them. The Indians have been subjected to numerous boundaries and lack personal liberty. Many freedom parties struggled to get rid of the Sati Pratha from society.

They fought for the widows' rights and began women's schooling. They assisted people in leading non-violent lives; India's freedom fighters joined hands and pledged to save the country. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, and Rani Laxmi Bai are different independence fighters who led the freedom war to free Indians from the British Raj. Apart from those independence warriors, others fought for the freedom of India.

They gave up their lifestyles and happiness, hoping for a brighter tomorrow. Birsa Munda, Kamala Das, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, Khudiram Bose, and others are most of those fighters. Their contributions should be valued in the same manner as those of those famous faces to whom we give credit for their independence.

Some Unsung Heroes of The Liberation Struggle

Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay was the first woman arrested during the Salt March as she promoted the civil disobedience movement. She was born on April 3, 1903, and worked as a social reformer and a freedom fighter. She was the reason behind the rebirth of handicraft, handloom, and theatre in India. She raised her voice for the upliftment of the social and financial reputation of girls in Indian society.

Peer Ali Khan was born in 1812 and participated in the independence Movement, for which he got capital punishment in 1857. Peer Ali was a bookbinder and secretly provided pamphlets and coded messages to freedom fighters. He used to conduct campaigns against Britishers.

Birsa Munda was a tribal freedom fighter of the Munda tribe. He led the tribal religious movement, which was believed to change the old patterns under British rule. This made him recognised during the Independence movement in India.

Matangani Hazra was born on October 19, 1870. In 1905, Hazra joined the independence movement and also became a part of the civil disobedience movement. In 1942, Hazra participated in the Quit India Movement with Mahatma Gandhi, asking the Britishers to leave the country and putting an end to colonisation in India. Leading a mass of 6,000 supporters, 71-year-old Hazra was heading to take control of the Tamluk Police Station. As she stepped out, she was shot by using the British-Indian police and took her final breath.

Aruna Asaf Ali was an active participant in the Indian Independence movement and got recognised at the age of 33 as she hoisted the Indian country Flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan, Bombay, throughout the Quit India Movement in 1942.

Bhikaiji Cama's name was the call on roads and homes, and everyone listened to it. However, many aren't privy to her story of courage. She was a prominent figure in the Indian Independence movement, as well as a supporter of gender equality. In her appeal for human rights, autonomy and equality from Great Britain, Cama unfurled the Indian flag at the International Socialist Conference in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1907, which she called the Flag of Indian Independence.

My Learnings

They have inspired and motivated me to fight against injustice. Unsung Heroes are a source of inspiration as they teach us the value of love for our country and dedication towards our nation. Now we know our rights, and they taught us to fight for our rights no matter from whom we are fighting. India is the land of several brave freedom fighters, and many of them have sacrificed their lives for the sake of the independence of the nation, but we're not aware of their names. Cells collected from others had died, but the ones lifted from Lacks’s tissue under the legitimizing sheen of medical treatment proved, shockingly, to divide again and again. The immortal "HeLa cells" have gone on to provide the foundation for two Nobel Prizes, nearly 20,000 patents, and countless medical advances. 2. Tenzing Norgay // A Climber Above

Before summiting Mount Everest was the pinnacle of every daredevil’s bucket list, a Nepali-Indian man by the name of Tenzing Norgay (born Namgyal Wangdi) became one of the first people to finish the daring trek.

For years, Norgay had served as a Sherpa, aiding in several unsuccessful attempts by British, Canadian, and Swiss mountaineering parties throughout the 1930s and ‘40s to reach Everest's elusive summit. Then, in 1953, he joined the expedition of John Hunt, a British Army officer, and ultimately accompanied fellow expedition member Edmund Hillary (whom Norgay had saved from a dangerous fall in a previous mission) to make the final ascent. Norgay went on to publish several books about his experiences.

3. Virginia Apgar // Better Health for Newborns

Despite graduating fourth in her class at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1933, Virginia Apgar faced a host of setbacks in the early decades of her career. She initially worked in surgery, though was discouraged from continuing by the chair. Later, when she returned to Columbia as director of anesthesia in 1938, she had to contend with lower pay and her colleagues’ lack of respect for the then-undervalued field.

By the mid-1940s, however, things began to look up. Anesthesia became better respected, helping propel Apgar to the position of professor at Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons—the first woman to have the job. The work Apgar is best remembered for came in the 1950s when she developed a system for assessing the health of newborns. The Apgar Score is still used to this day.

4. Enheduanna // Tales for the Ages

The daughter of Sumerian royalty, Enheduanna had a busy schedule. In addition to serving as high priestess in one of the area’s most important temples, she also found the time to cement herself as the earliest identified author in the world. Among her writings are 42 hymns and a personal devotion to a goddess (which also features a recounting of her own exile from the ancient city of Ur).

Enheduanna lived in around 2300 BCE, but her return to relevance didn’t come until the 1950s, when the first academic papers drew on 1927 archaeological discoveries during the excavation of Ur to examine her work and legacy.

5. Maurice Hilleman // Vaccine Maven

Ever wondered why you haven’t come down with measles , mumps, or rubella recently? You can thank Maurice Hillerman , a Depression-era farm boy turned virologist who earned a microbiology and chemistry Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1944. For the next 60 years, Hillerman was tenacious in his battle against viruses and his quick work likely helped avert a pandemic in 1957.

In spite (or maybe because) of his brilliance, he wasn’t always one for convention. When his daughter came down with the mumps in 1963, he swabbed her throat and had a vaccine developed just four years later. By the end of his career, he’d developed more than 40 vaccines.

6. Rosalind Franklin // The Third Contributor to the Double Helix

When most people think of DNA, they think of two pairs—the double-helix and Watson and Crick. James Watson and James Crick revolutionized the scientific world when they published their model of DNA. And while the two were duly lauded, few knew that there had been a third (and unwitting) contributor: Rosalind Franklin .

Franklin, as it happened, had also been working to uncover the structure of DNA , and had a now-famous photograph among her research. When an estranged work partner showed Franklin’s unpublished research to Watson and Crick, they ultimately built their final model in part off of her findings. For years afterward, Franklin’s critical contributions were all but erased.

7. Ignaz Semmelweis // Hygiene Pioneer

Wash my hands ? Before performing surgery? Hard pass. That was the (paraphrased) reaction to Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis ’s 1846 suggestion that maybe, just maybe, his medical colleagues should disinfect their hands and tools between handling cadavers and helping to deliver newborns.

When he implemented this simple requirement in his Vienna hospital department, death rates among new moms plummeted. Germ theory hadn’t yet been established, which meant Semmelweis couldn’t explain why his practice worked, only that it clearly did. Despite the dramatic results, doctors didn’t take kindly to the implication that they were to blame for patients’ deaths, and Semmelweis ’s pugnacious attitude didn’t win him many allies. Eventually, he lost his job, and his former staff abandoned the practice.

8. Ibn Battuta // “One of the Greatest Travelers of All Time”

No one can say for sure exactly how many places Ibn Battuta visited, but all can agree on one thing: It was a very high number. Battuta got the travel bug in 1325, when he set off from his hometown of Tangier on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Along the way, Battuta made pit stops in Egypt and Syria and dropped by some of history’s most famous cities, including Alexandria and Jerusalem.

After his pilgrimage was over, he decided it wasn’t time yet to return home. He set out instead through the Middle East and India, and later sailed the Red Sea and saw the Horn of Africa. He may even have spent time in China (where he saw the Great Wall), as well as Spain and Mali, and even crossed the Sahara Desert. Home in Morocco after 30 years of adventure, he told his story to a poet, who turned it into the Rihla, which has become an invaluable historical text for modern scholars.

9. John Tradescant // Collector of Oddities

Over the course of his career gathering seeds and bulbs for his work as a gardener to English nobility, John Tradescant acquired a host of oddities ranging from exotic animals like salamanders and pelicans to mythological artifacts like the egg of a dragon .

In 1628, Tradescant opened his home to the public, charging them sixpence to enter and see his curiosities. It quickly became a must-see London attraction, and ultimately gave rise to the modern Ashmolean Museum in Oxford—the world's first public museum .

10. Bayard Rustin // Civil Rights Leader

Long before the Civil Rights movement began gaining steam in the late 1950s, Bayard Rustin had already gained the attention of federal authorities over his demands for equality. As early as the 1930s, he was protesting the racial segregation in the U.S. military and traveled the country making speeches. In 1963, Rustin and A. Philip Randolph teamed up with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  to plan the March on Washington.

Though many of his contemporaries became household names, Rustin often stayed behind the scenes, in part because he was a gay man. In the 1980s, however, Rustin began to speak openly about his sexuality and advocate for gay rights.

11. Alexander Fleming // Discovery of Penicillin

While serving in the Army Medical Corps during World War I , Scottish physician and scientist Alexander Fleming watched as soldiers died as a result of infected wounds. His observations led him to write an article on the topic that went unaccepted in the journals of the day.

In 1928, he inadvertently discovered a bacteria-killing mold after leaving a Petri dish uncovered near   an open   window. After determining it was part of the Penicillium genus, he published a 1929 paper about the discovery he’d since named penicillin. Initially largely ignored, penicillin caught the attention of two scientists in 1940, who began mass-producing it during the Second World War . “I did not invent penicillin. Nature did that,” Fleming later said. “I only discovered it by accident.”

12. Mildred and Richard Loving // Fighters for Interracial Love

Mildred and Richard Loving ’s 1958 marriage was entirely normal, except for the fact that it happened to be illegal in Virginia, their home state. The problem? Richard was white, and Mildred was Black and Native American, which violated the states’ so-called Racial Integrity Act. After being arrested just five weeks into their marriage, the couple was told they could either go to prison or stay out of the state for the next 25 years.

But the couple wanted to live at home, so after trying to create a new life in Washington, D.C., they contacted the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and sued the state. After multiple appeals, the case landed in the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1967, the justices announced a unanimous decision that made the Virginia law (and with it, laws on the books in 15 other states) unconstitutional.

13. Wendell Smith // Pioneering Black Sportswriter

Wendell Smith grew up wanting to play sports, not write about them. But despite attention from a scout from the Detroit Tigers, being a Black man in the 1930s meant a career as a major league ballplayer was out of the question.

Instead, Smith went to college and became a sportswriter for the Pittsburgh Courier , at which he made a splash after interviewing more than 50 white players and managers about baseball’s color line. Smith used his findings (75 percent said they’d welcome Black players) to pressure the MLB, and ultimately connected Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey with Jackie Robinson . Once Robinson was signed, Smith stayed with him to support his transition, all while continuing his writing career. Smith went on to become the first Black sportswriter at a white newspaper.

14. Alexander Mackenzie // The First European to Cross the North American Continent

More than a decade before Lewis and Clark’s famous cross-continent trek, another European explorer claimed the title of first to cross North America (north of Mexico). In 1788, Alexander Mackenzie replaced Peter Pond as head of operations for the fur-trading North West Company. Pond had theorized that Cook’s River ultimately emptied out into the Pacific, and Mackenzie decided to test this hypothesis in the hopes that it would open up new trade routes.

The river, it transpired, actually went north, and after a brief detour to the Arctic Ocean, Mackenzie came home and decided to try again. In 1793, he set out on a different route alongside a party that included both fellow members of the North West Company and First Nations advisors. Miraculously, the group made it to the Pacific Ocean in one piece and successfully returned home. While it was too treacherous for a trade route, his resulting maps vastly improved global understanding of North American geography.

15. Karl Schwarzschild // Physics from the Battlefield

When Albert Einstein published field equations of general relativity in 1915, he didn’t expect to live to see them solved. But apparently, even geniuses are wrong once in a while.

In the very same year, one Karl Schwarzchild , a Jewish-German army lieutenant who’d volunteered to fight in World War I (he was 40 at the time) somehow found the time to publish not one but three scientific papers. The two that covered general relativity included the first exact solutions to Einstein’s field equations. Sadly, what more Schwarzchild could have achieved remains a mystery: He died only a year later.

16. Lavinia Fontana // Europe’s First Professional Female Painter

Born in 1552 to a painter in Bologna, Lavina Fontana displayed artistic promise from an early age. Her father spotted her talent and even used her earning potential as a way to evade paying a dowry in her marriage to a wealthy merchant.

When she wasn’t busy birthing 11 children, Fontana established herself as Europe’s first professional female painter, becoming a coveted portrait artist for the noblewomen of the age. As her fame grew, so did her client list, which eventually included the Catholic Church and the king of Spain. In 1603, she was inducted into an all-male Academy of St. Luke.

17. Louis Braille // Making Reading Possible for the Blind

Just 12 years after accidentally blinding himself at the age of 3, Louis Braille developed a system of writing for the blind made up of raised dots. Five years later, he published a book on the subject (in Braille, of course).

Braille went on to have a successful career in education, teaching algebra, grammar, music, and geography at the New School for the Blind in Paris and becoming its first blind full professor.

18. Andrée Borrel // Fearless Resistance Fighter

Andrée Borrel began World War II as a nurse, but when her hospital closed in 1941, she and her coworker, Maurice Dufour, went into a more dangerous line of work. Near the border with Spain, Borrell and Dufour began operating Villa Rene-Therese, the last safe house in a network that helped people at risk escape Nazi-controlled France.

When the network was compromised, she escaped to England, where she joined the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in 1942. After training, she parachuted back into France (the first woman to do so) and worked there as a courier for resistance networks, as a saboteur, and more. In 1943, she was arrested by the Gestapo but refused to talk under interrogation. A year later, she was executed in Germany.

19. Private Henry Johnson // Forgotten War Hero

The American military had little use for the Harlem Hellfighters (otherwise known as the 369th Infantry Regiment). They were an all-Black division, which in World War I meant the Army paid little interest in them .  But France badly needed soldiers, so Private Henry Johnson and the rest of the regiment were shipped overseas, where they received French gear and served under French authority.

One night, when Johnson and another man were stationed on middle-of-the-night guard duty, a group of German forces attacked. When his fellow soldier went down, Johnson was left alone to fend off the growing group of enemies descending upon him. Once he used up his available grenades and ammunition, he resorted to a bolo knife, with which he somehow managed to kill four Germans and injure between 10 and 20 others, all while sporting bullet wounds in his head, side, hands, and arms.

For his bravery, Johnson was awarded the highest honor in the French military: the Croix du Guerre. Despite his French accolades, he received few honors at home and was unable to take advantage of veteran programs made available to white soldiers. He soon found himself unemployed and died young. Johnson finally received a posthumous Purple Heart in 1996 and the Medal of Honor in 2015

20. Sarah Breedlove (a.k.a. Madam C.J. Walker) // The First Black Woman Millionaire

Born to formerly enslaved parents, orphaned at the age of 6, married at 14, and widowed by 20, Sarah Breedlove had no obvious avenues to success. With her 2-year-old in tow, she worked as a laundress and took classes at night school.

Then, Breedlove developed the “Walker system” (named after her soon-to-be second husband, Charles J. Walker), an approach to Black hair care inspired by her own scalp disorder. What began as selling homemade products directly to other Black women soon grew into a massive business.

In 1908, she opened a beauty school and a factory for her products, and her success propelled her to become (likely) the first self-made woman millionaire . In New York, she hosted many members of the Harlem Renaissance in her home and directed much of her fortune back toward organizations including the NAACP, Tuskegee Institute, and various educational charities.

Introduction.

In today's fast-moving world and tough competitive day-to-day life, the youth hardly find time for remembrance of our rich heritage and past. This becomes most crucial whilst the nation celebrates Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (commemoration of 75 years of Indian Independence). The fight against colonial rule in India constitutes a unique narrative, one which is not marred by violence. Rather a narrative that is full of variegated stories of valor, bravery, Satyagraha, dedication, and sacrifice across the length and breadth of the subcontinent. These stories compose the rich Indian cultural heritage and traditions. Thus, the unsung heroes need not necessarily define the lesser-known freedom fighters. They may, at times, be the leaders whose ideals delineate the Indian value system.

The Section on Unsung Heroes is an attempt to recall and remember forgotten heroes of our freedom struggle, many of whom might be renowned yet unknown to the new generation. The aim of recreating and bringing forth stories, which lay as faded memories of the past, shall serve as a medium of inspiration and encouragement for the coming generations. India 2.0 is not just about fuelling the spirit of India in any one particular paradigm of growth. It encompasses all spheres of life, most of all by enriching our hearts and souls. The spirit of India is incomplete whilst we take our unsung heroes along this journey of growth and development. Their ethos and principles ought to be recalled and respected.

Bursa Munda

During the British regime, Birsa Munda led the millenarian movement which started in the Bengal Presidency (now known as Jharkhand) in 1875.

Peer Ali Khan

In 1857, Peer Ali Khan participated in the freedom movement of India and participated in many freedom movements. Sadly, he died as a result of his participation.

Lakshmi Sahgal

Lakshmi Sahgal was born on October 24, 1914 and served as a member of the Indian National Army and a minister of women’s affairs.

Garimella Satyanarayana

The poet Garimella Satyanarayana inspired many people. Using his poetry and songs, he instilled a sense of patriotism in the people of Andhra Pradesh to join the anti-British movement.

Madam Bhikaji Kama

Her impression was greatly influenced by the speeches he delivered for London Indian communities. It was through Shyamji Krishna Verma that she became acquainted with Dadabhai Naoroji.

An important figure in the Indian independence struggle is Peer Ali Khan. In 1812, this revolutionary was born in Muhammadpur Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh state of India. In a rebellion against the British, he played a major role.

In this way, he was able to provide coded messages, notes, and important leaflets to the freedom fighters. Throughout his career, he was engaged in bookbinding. Additionally, he participated in campaigns against the British.

Sardar Udham Singh

As a freedom fighter, Sardar Udham Singh played a major role in the struggle for independence. The massacre at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar in 1919 greatly moved him, so he decided to avenge this painful incident by taking revenge. At that time, a British official named Michael O’Dwyer, the lieutenant governor of Punjab, was responsible for this painful incident.

On the 13th of March in 1940, Udham Singh was accused of killing O’Dwyer at Caxton Hall in London. Therefore, he was sentenced to death and hanged on 31st July 1940. While in prison, he kept his name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, and emphasized the three main religions in the country – Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism.

Tiruppur Kumaran

A freedom fighter, Tiruppur Kumaran was born on the 4th of October 1904 in Erode district of Tamil Nadu to Nachimuthu Mudaliyar and Karuppaayi. His involvement in protesting against Britishers started at a very young age.

Through the protests, he raised his voice against Britishers. At the age of 27, he died protesting against Britishers on January 11, 1932. The state government installed a statue in Tiruppur in honor of this great freedom fighter and India Post issued a stamp in his name to mark the centennial of his birth.

Khudiram Bose

A brave freedom fighter, Khudiram Bose is regarded as the second youngest revolutionary of the Indian Independence movement. He was born in the West Bengal State of India on 3rd December, 1889. His protests against British rule began at a very young age.

He was accused of the murder of two British women in a carriage. He was the first Indian revolutionary of Bengal to be executed by the British. His friend Prafulla Chaki shot himself before being arrested by the British. Khudiram Bose was 18 and 8 months old when sentenced to death.

It was Matangini Hazra who actively participated in the Indian independence struggle. In the year 1869, she was born in a small peasant family in Hogla village of West Bengal. She was active in protesting against the Britishers until the end of her life. As part of the Indian independence movement, she participated in several protests against the Britishers, and she was also imprisoned several times.

The Indian revolutionary Begum Hazrat Mahal fought for freedom during the 1857 independence revolt. She was born in 1820 in Uttar Pradesh. The second wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, Begum Hazrat Mahal took part in nationalist activities after the British took over Awadh and the Nawab was exiled in Calcutta. She died there in 1879.

Indian history has been filled with the sacrifice of many brave freedom fighters. It is regrettable that we are unaware of the names of many of them, who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence.

As we celebrate Independence Day in the nation, we remember the events of our history and pay tribute to all of our freedom fighters for their bravery and sacrifice. The names of many brave Indian revolutionaries are in obscurity, but we can recognize them by referring to them as ‘unsung heroes of the freedom struggle’.

While Mahatama Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, and Mangal Pandey are undoubtedly the most famous freedom fighters, there are others who contributed to the independence movement but whose names have faded into obscurity. These freedom fighters who looked the tyrannical British rulers in the eye and dared to raise pro-independence slogans. While some are revered throughout the world by the Indian community, there are others whose names, despite their deserving of all glory, remain unknown to the masses today. In this post, we will proudly discuss some unknown freedom fighters. These are referred to as the unsung heroes of India.  These unsung heroes also contribute to the fact that we live in a free country. We must honour their sacrifices and work toward coexistence and peace while ensuring social justice.

Ali Aruna Asaf

Ali gained notoriety among the Indian masses and infamy in the British Raj camp at the age of 33 when she hoisted the Indian National Congress flag at Bombay’s Gowalia Tank Maidan during the Quit India Movement in 1942.

An arrest warrant was issued in her name, but she fled and founded an underground movement. Her possessions were seized and sold. The British government announced a 5,000-rupee reward for her capture at the time.

She remained active in politics and social work following India’s independence, but received no recognition.

Hazra Matangini

Hazra is another freedom fighter who, despite having given her life for the country’s freedom, has never received her due recognition. She was an active member of the Quit India and Non-Cooperation movements.

While many have seen her name on roads and buildings, few are aware of who she was or what she accomplished for India.

Cama was not only a member of India’s independence movement, but also an iconoclast in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, advocating for gender equality.

She donated the majority of her personal belongings to a girls’ orphanage. Additionally, she raised the Indian flag at the 1907 International Socialist Conference in Stuttgart, Germany.

Begum Hazrat Mahal

after her husband was exiled, she became a vital part of the 1857 Indian rebellion, taking charge of hours and even seizing control of Lucknow. Later in the rebellion, Begum Hazrat was forced to retreat to Nepal, where she died.

Munshi Kanaiyalal Maneklal

Mushi was also known as Kulpati by his peers due to his active involvement in India’s freedom struggle. He was an outspoken supporter of the Quit India Movement.

He was arrested several times by the British regime for his involvement in pro-liberty activities. Additionally, he founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

Ali Peer Khan

Mangal Pandey was the most famous hero of the 1857 mutiny, but only a few people have heard of Peer Ali Khan. He was one of India’s first rebels and was one of the 14 people hanged for their role in the mutiny.

Even today, his work continues to inspire a large number of followers. However, generations later, his name simply vanished.

Sahgal, Lakshmi

Captain Lakshmi was an Indian Army officer who served in World War II. She was also imprisoned in Burma, now Myanmar.

Sahgal enlisted when she learned that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was assembling an army of female soldiers. She was directed by the high command to establish a female regiment known as the ‘Rani of Jhansi regiment, to which she was appointed Captain.

Nachiyar Velu

Velu Nachiyar was the first Indian queen to wage war against the British Raj prior to the Sepoy mutiny of 1857.

Former princess of Ramanathapuram, she was an outspoken opponent of British rule and gave the rulers a run for their money.

Bose Khudiram

Some may be familiar with his name because he was one of India’s youngest revolutionaries and is frequently discussed in history books. His contribution to the freedom struggle is also noteworthy, as he was only 18 years old when he was hanged by the British for his anti-Raj activities.

Konwar, Kushal

Sarupathar Congress Committee’s President was an Assamese Tai-Ahom freedom fighter. He is the sole martyr from the final phase of the Quit India Movement in 1942–1943.

Benoy-Badal-Dinesh

Benoy Basu, Badal Gupta, and Dinesh Gupta were 22, 18, and 19 years old, respectively, when they entered the Writer’s Building dressed in European attire. Their target was Colonel NS Simpson, the then-Inspector General of Police.

They were able to assassinate him but were outnumbered by security personnel. Benoy took a cyanide pill to avoid capture, while the other two shot themselves.

Garimella Satyanarayana

He was an inspiration to the people of Andhra as a writer; he used his ability to write persuasive poems and songs to compel the people of Andhra to join the anti-British movement.

Srivastava Tara Rani

She led a procession in front of the Siwan Police Station with her husband. Despite the fact that he had been shot, she bandaged his wounds and continued forward. He had died by the time she returned. However, her will to continue was even stronger, and she continued to fight with her flag raised.

Kumaran Tirupur

Kumaran was instrumental in establishing the Desa Bandhu Youth Association. On 11th January 1932, he was assassinated during a protest march against the colonial government for carrying an Indian nationalist flag that the British had banned. Though he died of his injuries, he was discovered holding the flag.

Munda Birsa

He was born on a Thursday and thus bears the name. Though he died at the young age of 25, he accomplished some remarkable feats during his brief life. The most notable of these was his leadership of the Millenarian movement, which inspired the tribal belts of modern-day Bihar and Jharkhand to rise up against the British Raj in the late nineteenth century.

Deshmukh Durgabai

Durgabai was a leader of numerous Satyagraha movements and a member of India’s Constituent Assembly and Planning Commission. She was a prominent figure in India’s independence struggle. She was in charge of ensuring that all visitors had proper tickets prior to entering the Khadi exhibition in 1923. She even barred Pandit Nehru from entering until the organisers provided him with a ticket and she permitted him to enter.

Begum Abadi Bano

She was one of the first few Muslim women to join the fight, having been born in 1852. Abadi Bano Begum was one of the first women to address a political gathering from behind a purdah.

Giri Parbati

Parbati Giri was only sixteen years old but was actively involved in all freedom activities, particularly the Quit India Movement. She was also sentenced to two years in prison for her involvement in such activities. Giri served the public on a social level following independence and was also known as Western Orissa’s Mother Teresa.

The unsung pandemic heroes, extraordinary people are going above and beyond to serve their communities..

For some it's a sense of duty. For others it's an obligation. And then there are those for which it’s a necessity.  

Two years ago the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic. Nobody knew exactly what lay ahead. But over the course of the following 24 months, extraordinary women and men have risen to the occasion to serve their communities. 

Their names aren't necessarily recognizable. But the actions of these heroes have without a shadow of a doubt made our world a safer, better place. We want to introduce you to just a few of these incredible people. 

A Ugandan healthcare worker uses a megaphone to encourage her community to get vaccinated 

When Judith Candiru was growing up, she always admired the white outfits nurses wore. For her, it was emblematic of the care they provided. Now she’s one of them. She takes pride in putting on that sharp uniform, complete with a yellow belt.  

COVID-19 has been personal for Candiru. She contracted the virus at one point and recalls the stigma she and her family endured at the time.  

“This was the saddest moment of my career. I and my family were shunned by the community.”  

It didn’t stop her though. She recovered and bounced back to work. Candiru passionately serves the people of Yumbe District in northern Uganda, which straddles the border with South Sudan.  

In the morning, she heads to the maternity ward where she cares for premature babies. Through UNICEF-supported training, she’s able to support sick infants and ensure they thrive. 

But that’s just part of her day. Throughout the pandemic, after consultations and finishing her rounds on the ward, she’ll head out into the local community either on a motorbike or on foot. 

Equipped with a megaphone, Candiru has been amplifying the message that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and important. Her message has resonated. Members of the community trust her, and that’s evident as one by one they sit on a bench and receive their shots from Candiru.  

Climbing mountains and crossing canyons in Nepal with vaccines on her back 

Birma Kunwar has been weaving her way up mountains and across suspended footbridges for years now. With a box of vaccines perched on her back , she ascends hilly pathways in the remote part of Nepal’s far west.  

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, Kunwar would collect lifesaving vaccines in the town of Khalanga, which is the district headquarters of the Darchula District. Those doses were mainly for the routine immunization of children that lived in the villages that nest on the hillside she climbs.  

The pandemic brought a new challenge and a new opportunity: “I’ve been walking the same path but with these new vaccines,” she says.

Her destination on this journey is a health post in the village of Duhun. And at some times of the year, it can only be reached on foot.  

“The roads here are unreliable for many months of the year, particularly during the monsoon,” Kunwar notes as she explains the dangers posed by landslides. “It’s a risky ride.” 

So with the weight of a community’s health on her back, she often walks the entire stretch. That takes between three to four hours. For Kunwar, that journey is well worth it. Delivering essential vaccines to these communities is not only a job for her, it’s a duty.  

“People are eagerly waiting for vaccines, they ask me constantly when they will arrive, when they can get it, when it will be their turn. All the time.” 

The teenage innovator whose invention is making handwashing safer 

Emmanuel Cosmos Msoka is an innovator and an activist. It’s no coincidence that the 18-year-old from Tanzania invented a crucial hygiene tool during the pandemic that has a water theme to it. 

“I was born at the foot of Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro," he says. The only place in my country where water turns to snow and ice.” 

Emmanuel grew up with a desire to change the way things are normally done and to help solve social problems. That’s what he’s achieved . When COVID-19 arrived in Tanzania and his community struggled to combat the disease, he stepped up.  

His idea: a handwashing machine that uses foot pedals to function, in turn reducing the chance of spreading the virus. Since developing the technology, he’s been able to supply over 400 handwashing stations across northern Tanzania.  

For his work, Emmanuel was appointed as a UNICEF Youth Advocate and nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize, awarded annually to a child who has made a significant contribution to advocating for children’s rights.  

Caring for her siblings while studying in times of loss  

Keysha is 14 years old. But her wisdom and thoughtfulness go beyond her years, as she’s had to grow up fast. Her mother, who worked at a restaurant, lost her life to COVID-19. 

“Our mother worked 12-hour days when the restaurant opened for business again,” Keysha says. “Her immune system was weak, that’s probably why she got COVID.” 

Keysha has had to take on more responsibility, caring for her two younger siblings . She’s been looking after her 7-year-old sister Afiqa whose been particularly affected. After school, Afiqa will often retreat to her room and spend hours watching family videos with her mother’s voice.  

In addition to her caregiving role, Keysha is aware of her father’s financial struggles as the family’s sole breadwinner. He works as a parking attendant at the restaurant where his late wife also worked. So, to help out, Keysha is planning to enroll in a vocational school that will enable her to get a job faster and support her father.

“I can do anything – perhaps even go to university one day.” 

Along with her siblings, Keysha is among tens of thousands of children that have lost a parent or caregiver due to COVID-19 in Indonesia. They’re being assisted by UNICEF’s mental health and psychosocial support programme, with the help of local governments.

• Madam Bhikaji Kama

Madam Bhikaji Kama was one of the important Indian revolutionaries. She had been born in a Parsi family in 1936 in Mumbai. She went for the cure of plague in London and met Shyamji Krishna Verma. She came to know and meet with Dadabhai Naoroji because of Shyamji Krishna Verma.  She also worked as a secretary of Dadabhai Naoroji who was then serving as a president of the British committee of the Indian National Congress in London.

He kept his name as ‘Ram Mohammad Singh Azad’ while he was in imprisonment and this emphasized the three major religions namely Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh.

Tiruppur Kumaran was a freedom fighter and had contributed to the Indian Independence movement. He was born to Nachimuthu Mudaliyar and Karuppaayi in Erode district of Tamil Nadu on 4th October 1904. He was involved in participating in protests against Britishers from a very small age. He also established Desa Bandhu Youth Association and raised his voice against Britishers through the protests. He died at a very young age of 27 while protesting against Britishers on 11th of January in the year 1932. The reason for his death was the major injuries because of beating by police while he was protesting against the British government in Tiruppur. He was asked by the British police officials to put the Indian flag down because it was banned by the British. Tiruppur Kumaran was not ready to do the same at any cost and he kept holding the flag till his death. This gave him the title ‘Kodi Kaatha Kumaran’ which literally means ‘Kumaran who protected the flag’. A statue has been installed in Tiruppur by the state government to pay tribute to this great freedom fighter and a stamp has also been issued in his name by the India Post on the occasion of his 100th birth anniversary.

• Khudiram Bose

Khudiram Bose is regarded as a brave freedom fighter and the second youngest revolutionary in the Indian Independence movement. He was born to Trailokyanath Bose and Lakshmipriya Devi on 3rd December in the year 1889 in the West Bengal State of India. He started raising his voice and protesting against British rule from a very young age. He was accused of the assassination of two British women’s death in the carriage. Khudiram Bose along with his friend Prafulla Chaki went for throwing a bomb on the carriage of the British judge named Magistrate Douglas Kingsford but they were mistaken and they threw the bomb in the wrong carriage. In Kolkata, the first statue to be built after India got Independence was of Matangini Hazra. This was built to pay tribute to this great freedom fighter of the nation.

• Begum Hazrat Mahal

Begum Hazrat Mahal was an Indian revolutionary during the revolt of 1857 in the freedom struggle of independence. She was born in the year 1820 in the Faizabad or Awadh district of Uttar Pradesh state in India. Begum Hazrat Mahal was regarded as the second wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. What is a hero? Is it an astronaut who gets a big parade when they come home? Is it a firefighter who risks their life to save a child from a burning building? Is it a social worker who helps people put their lives together? All three could be considered heroes because they do difficult things, often in dangerous situations. The dictionary says that a hero is a person who is admired because they did something great. Heroes are people who show strength, courage, and grace under fire.

My younger brother thinks that movie stars are heroes because he admires them. But movie stars do not show strength the way real heroes do. When I asked some of my friends to name real heroes they gave examples of people who show strength. Heroes are firefighters who battle fierce fires or emergency workers who go out in bad weather to rescue people or fix broken power lines. These people use physical strength every day to make the world safer for others.

Heroes are not only strong, but they show courage. I saw a story on the television news about firefighters who ran into a burning building to rescue a baby. Even though they might be frightened, they go into a burning building or face a bully or face getting turned down for a job they really need. They keep after it, though. That’s what makes them heroes. They keep trying to get the job done.

Showing grace under fire means that heroes do not get angry or show that they are scared. Even in desparate situations, heroes stay calm and keep there cool. They get the job done. Of course, that is the most important quality in heroes because most people would be afraid in a fire or disaster and would run away. Heroes stay and deal with things.

A hero is a person who gets a job done right and uses strength and courage to get it done. He or she faces the odds without showing that they are afriad. Being a hero is not an easy thing but there are more heroes out there than you might think. People who are heroes do not always get recognized. Some of them don’t even think of themselves as heroes. True heroes are more than action figures, they are ordinary people who are brave, calm, and kind.

The Quiet Magic of Middle Managers

Nobody writes poems about middle managers. Nobody gets too romantic about the person who runs a department at a company, or supervises a construction crew, or serves as principal at a school, manager at a restaurant or deacon at a church. But I’ve come to believe that these folks are the unsung heroes of our age.

Amid a wider national atmosphere of division, distrust, bitterness and exhaustion, these managers are the frontline workers who try to resolve tensions and keep communities working, their teams united and relationships afloat. At a time when conflict entrepreneurs (see: Tucker Carlson) and demagogues are trying to rip society apart, I’m beginning to think that these members of the managerial class, spread across the institutions of society, are serving as the invisible glue that gives us a shot at sticking together.

So how do these managers work their magic? When I hear people in these roles talk about their work and its challenges, I hear, at least among the most inspiring of them, about the ways they put people over process, about the ways they deeply honor those right around them. A phrase pops into my mind: “Ethical leadership.” This is not just management. Something more deeply humanistic is going on. Let me give you a few features of ethical leadership:

Knowing that moral formation is part of the job. Here we turn to the gospel of Ted Lasso. When Lasso was asked about his goal for his soccer team, he replied: “For me, success is not about the wins and losses. It’s about helping these young fellas be the best versions of themselves on and off the field.” The lesson is that if you help your people become the best versions of themselves, the results you seek will take care of themselves.

Creating a moral ecology. I love talking about my old boss Jim Lehrer. When I was starting out at “PBS NewsHour” and I said something he thought was smart, his eyes would crinkle with pleasure. When I said something he thought was crass, his mouth would turn down in displeasure. For 10 years I chased the eye crinkles and tried to avoid the mouth downturns.

Jim never had to say anything to me, but with those kinds of slight gestures he taught us how to do our jobs. He communicated: This is how we do things on the “NewsHour”; these are our standards. Jim is gone, but the standards and moral ecology he helped create live on. Morally healthy communities habituate people to behave in certain ways and make it easier to be good.

Being hyperattentive. The poet Mary Oliver wrote: “This is the first, wildest and wisest thing I know: that the soul exists, and that it is built entirely out of attentiveness.” The leaders we admire are paying close attention to those who work with them. They are not self-centered but cast the beam of their care on others, making them feel seen and lit up. In how you see me, I come to see myself. If you cast a just and loving attention on people, they blossom.

Knowing that people are watching more closely than you might think . We like to believe that it’s our fancy pronouncements that have a big impact on others. But what usually gets communicated most deeply is the leader’s smallest gestures — the casual gifts of politeness, the little compliment or, on the other hand, the cold shoulder of thoughtlessness.

The Anglo-Irish statesman Edmund Burke wrote, “The law touches us but here and there, and now and then. Manners are what vex or soothe, corrupt or purify, exalt or debase, barbarize or refine us, by a constant, steady, uniform, insensible operation, like that of the air we breathe in. They give their whole form and color to our lives. According to their quality, they aid morals, they supply them, or they totally destroy them.”

Generativity. The economists tell us that people are basically self-interested, but there comes a time in the lives of many managers when the capacity to guide and foster the next generation is more rewarding than just serving themselves. And yet they do this mentoring with respect, not condescension. The most generative leaders don’t see themselves as doing things “for” people. They know that “with” is more powerful than “for.” The chaplain Samuel Wells once observed that modern societies often “attempt to construct a world that works perfectly well without love.” But, he adds, mature love between equals is walking “with” and not doing “for.”

The absence of a heroic sense. Albert Schweitzer was genuinely heroic. In 1905, he decided to leave his successful careers in music and academia to become a missionary doctor serving the poor in Africa. But he never thought that he was doing anything special, and he never hired people who thought of their work in those terms. If you’re going to last in a life of sacrificial service, he concluded, you have to treat it as something as normal as doing the dishes. He wrote, “Only a person who feels his preference to be a matter of course, not something out of the ordinary, and who has no thought of heroism but only of a duty undertaken with sober enthusiasm, is capable of becoming the sort of spiritual pioneer the world needs.”

The same humility is observed in the best organizations — the willingness to do the uncelebrated work, day after day.

Preserving the moral lens. People in most professions are driven by mixed motives. Doctors want to heal the sick but are pressured to speed through enough patients to make the practice profitable. Lawyers defend their clients but also have to rack up billable hours. In day-to-day life it is easy for the utilitarian lens of metrics to eclipse the moral lens that drew us to our work in the first place. Ethical leaders push against the creeping pressures of utilitarianism, so that the people around them remember the ideals that drove them into their work in the first place.

A posture of joy. We assume we are being judged on our competence, but mostly we are judged on our warmth. Ethical leaders communicate a joyfulness in what they do and attract followers in part by showing pleasure. Look at the example set by the great Russian martyr Aleksei Navalny. He was funny and teasing, even in the most brutal circumstances.

America’s founding fathers understood that when private virtue fails, then relationships fail and the constitutional order crumbles. The crucial struggle of our time is not merely the global macro struggle between democracy and authoritarianism; it’s the day-to-day micro-contest between the forces that honor human dignity and those that spread dehumanization.

The democratic fabric is held together by daily acts of consideration that middle managers are in a position to practice and foster. The best of them don’t resolve our disputes but lift us above them so that we can see disagreements from a higher and more generous vantage point. Democracy is more than just voting; it is a way of living, a way of living generously within disagreements, one that works only with ethical leaders showing the way.

Two sculptures became symbols of racial unity for a San Diego community. Now, local students are recreating them.

In the decades since Rossie Wade created the ‘Black Family’ statue and a similar work, time and weather took their toll. Now local welding students are building replicas to restore their legacy.

Red, yellow, black, white and brown figures stand together on a college campus in southeastern San Diego — each color representing a different race or culture, yet all a united family.

The wooden sculpture has stood as an important symbol of the community’s diverse culture, of family, of belonging — and most importantly, of hope — since Rossie Wade created it in 1974 while a resident artist at the San Diego College of Continuing Education’s Educational Cultural Complex in Mountain View.

“We’re one people, and despite our differences, we still must come together,” said Carole Wade Boyce, Wade’s daughter.

Her late father also created another, larger version of the work in all black for the greater community down the street at Mountain View Park. Dubbed “The Black Family,” that 6-foot sculpture depicted a family of four who appeared to reach toward the sky.

But in the five decades since, both landmarks began to splinter and disintegrate. All that remains of the park’s statue is a weathered plaque in front of a barren brick base. The school’s version is well on its way there, with one of the five figures missing entirely as the others have started to weather away.

Now after years of pleas from San Diego’s Black community, a welding instructor at the college is helping revive the historic sculptures — and making sure they are built to last.

Assemblymember Akilah Weber announced last October she’d secured $195,000 in state funding to rebuild the park landmark.

But while the park awaits that money, master welder and foundry director Mike Bradbury led a group of about a dozen welding students in recreating the school’s sculpture with stainless steel, funded by the college.

After his instructional assistant Byron Cowart painstakingly measured the current sculpture to figure out its dimensions and sizing, the group custom made special tools and got to work making the statue come to life.

“I enjoy a challenge,” Bradbury said. “Trying to figure out, ‘Can we actually do this?’ That’s the fun part.”

The replica made its debut on the school’s float in the 42nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in January.

Along with the rotating sculpture, the massive, 9-by-20-foot float detailed Wade’s life story, from his military service to his artistic endeavors.

School officials say Wade, who also served as treasurer and president of the San Diego Fine Arts Guild, left a lasting impact on the art community and cultivated a multicultural assembly during his tenure at the school.

“Rossie Wade is an unsung hero who believed in cultivating the love and essence of the Black family, art and education for all,” said Tina King, the college’s president.

Boyce said the statues represent the community’s strength in unity against any obstacle. To her family, seeing one of them in the parade was a momentous occasion — they had been pleading for years to ensure it wasn’t lost forever.

“It was really an overwhelming sense of pride to see the float, to see the statue, to remember the significance and to anticipate the renewal,” Boyce said.

Bradbury and Cowart said they were touched by the family’s emotional reaction to seeing the float for the first time.

The new, metal replica of the original sculpture will soon replace the splintering wooden one.

“This is something they can bring their grandkids back to see, because this is never going anywhere,” Bradbury said. “This is going to be there in 100 years.”

The project was a change for welding students in the college’s tuition-free certificate programs, who typically focus on getting their welding certifications.

“Sculpturing is completely different, and it pushes them,” Bradbury said. “This is real-world experience. We’ve got a budget, we’ve got a timeline, we have a client, and we have to present our product. So a lot of the students really benefit from this.”

San Diego native Nathan Torres, 30, was the manager of a retail store before deciding to switch career paths. As a first-time welding student, he was excited to participate in creating the sculpture and came in over school breaks to help finish it in time for the parade.

“Being able to leave a mark on that is something I really liked,” Torres said. “This is something that I can show my kids.”

His 5-year-old son and goddaughter even got to be part of the parade. “He was really proud to see that,” Torres said.

Over the past decade, students have been designing float entries for the parade that embody the culture of the community, from a Rosa Parks bus to a large globe to a replica of the Liberty Bell.

Those works will also be memorialized on campus in a permanent outdoor museum in an effort to get the campus designated a civil rights landmark — part of how the school is using a $35 million state grant to renovate its historic theater.

In the meantime, Bradbury is eager to get to work on reviving Wade’s perhaps better-known sculpture, after the City Council finally approved the allocation of state funding to the park landmark last month.

He hopes to recruit more students to help him with the rebuild, which he expects to be an even bigger challenge — at least a foot and a half taller, with no original sculpture left to use as a model.

“There’s no blueprints,” he said. “It was really difficult to actually find photos, and the ones we have are all grainy.”

The park — one of the first dedicated in San Diego — has been a vital resource and gathering place for the primarily Black community since the 1960s, hosting car shows, family picnics, youth sports leagues and more.

“I can’t wait till the statue is in the park, and there’s a big picnic and celebration,” Boyce said. “And I hope that it generates some thought-provoking visits with families to that community again.”
