An Integrated Masters with a PhD (iPhD) is a four-year postgraduate level programme that combines a one-year Masters course with a three-year PhD course. They allow students to familiarise themselves with their chosen topic, research methods and academic writing techniques before embarking on their own independent research project. An Integrated Masters with a PhD is particularly popular with international students and students who initially lack specialised knowledge or research skills.

Introduction

An Integrated Masters with PhD, also commonly referred to as either just an Integrated Masters degree or an Integrated PhD, offers a relatively new way to undertake postgraduate training. They maintain the depth and focus of a conventional PhD but offer a more comprehensive doctoral training experience.

Due to their growing popularity, both the number of universities offering these newer forms of PhD and the number of students applying to them has steadily increased.

This page describes what Integrated Masters with PhDs are, who they are for, their advantages and disadvantages, how they differ from conventional PhDs and how they are structured in terms of programme, eligibility and costs. This page is for you if you are considering applying for an integrated course, or simply want to know more about them.

What is an Integrated PhD?

An Integrated PhD is a four-year postgraduate programme. They involve undertaking a one-year Masters degree (MRes or MSc) in your first year, followed by a three-year PhD programme in your second to fourth year. Although the courses run back-to-back, a student can only progress to the second year if they show satisfactory performance in their first year. The one-year Masters and the three-year PhD are considered separately in terms of qualifications; therefore, a student who completes an Integrated PhD will receive both a Masters degree (MRes or MSc) and a PhD as opposed to a single postgraduate qualification.

The aim of an Integrated PhD is to provide a structured approach to doctoral studies, combining advanced PhD research with formal teaching in relevant subjects, research methods and communication skills.

As Integrated PhDs are relatively new compared to more regular doctoral pathways such as stand-alone or MPhil-upgraded PhDs, some professors informally refer to them as ‘New Route PhDs’.

Difference Between Integrated PhD and Regular PhD

The most significant difference between an Integrated PhD and a regular PhD is the addition of the one-year Masters degree at the beginning of the programme. This results in an Integrated PhD typically lasting four years, as opposed to the three years as with regular PhDs.

Integrated PhDs are structured in such a way that they provide students with a broader range of foundational skills than a regular PhD. The first year introduces you to a combination of taught elements, practical experience and advanced research skills. In a regular PhD this mode of teaching is missing as it is assumed you already have this level of knowledge.

The last significant difference between the two types of doctoral programmes is the ‘group’ aspect associated with the Integrated version. Since the Masters programme also includes other students enrolled in Integrated PhDs, you will have a small cohort with whom you will work closely alongside during your studies.

Who are Integrated PhDs suitable for?

Integrated PhDs can be an effective pathway for any student, but they stand out in two situations:

Scenario 1: International Students

The Higher Education system differs across countries , although not by a large amount, enough to where an unfamiliar student may struggle, especially when working independently. An Integrated PhD allows you to adapt to the UK education system by offering a more guided and hands-on approach to your learning and research process before you embark on your three-year research project.

It also has visa benefits. If an international student seeking a Masters degree in the UK already knows they want to follow it up with a PhD, enrolling in an Integrated PhD will save them from having to leave the country and re-apply for a visa after completing their initial postgraduate degree.

Scenario 2: Lack of undergraduate research experience or a relevant Masters degree

An Integrated PhD is useful for students who have academic abilities but lack the necessary background to be considered for a standard-route PhD. This usually occurs under one of three scenarios:

  • The applicant is currently an undergraduate student or only holds a Bachelor’s degree,
  • The student has a Masters degree, but in a subject only loosely related to the discipline they wish to pursue at doctoral level,
  • The student has a relevant Masters degree, but the programme lacked a research focus, leaving the student with underdeveloped research skills.

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Integrated PhD

The advantages of an Integrated PhD are strongly linked to the international and inexperienced students they cater for. They offer students an effective means of gaining more confidence, knowledge and research skills in their field before starting a doctorate, and also provide visa benefits to international students who will be undertaking prior postgraduate study.

Integrated PhDs also enable students the possibility of receiving funding for the Masters phase of their programme, as will be explained in more detail in the ‘Funding Opportunities’ section.

Integrated doctorates have no obvious disadvantages, but are generally not suitable for those who already have a Masters degree or well-developed research skills in their chosen field. For these students, the additional costs and duration of an Integrated PhD can be avoided by opting for a traditional PhD for which they will already be suited for.

The programme of study is naturally divided into two parts, the first for your Masters studies and the second for your PhD studies.

Your Masters studies will usually be divided into 180 module credits, half of which will focus on taught components and the other half on research components.

The modules will be tailored to your course, but they will include a variation of:

Taught modules:

  • Subject-specific module – You choose one or two modules from a predefined list of topics within your subject area. Your selection should reflect the research area you want your PhD to focus on.
  • English and Communication – Academic language and communication skills will be taught to prepare you for the ‘writing-up’ phase of your doctorate. A common misconception is that this module is similar to the English language requirement tests required to apply to a iPhD. In reality, the module will focus on learning how to critically evaluate research sources, write abstracts, literature reviews and conclusions, communicate in lab-based environments and present to audiences.
  • Research Techniques  – You’ll receive in-depth training to familiarise you with the different research methods and analytical techniques available to modern researchers.
  • Research Proposal Development  – You’ll work with your intended PhD supervisor to prepare a research proposal for your three-year PhD research project.

Research Modules:

You will carry out one or two small laboratory research projects under supervision for practical experience.

Integrated PhD in UK - Lectures and Lab Work

If you complete these modules with satisfactory performance, you will be awarded a Masters degree and will be considered for the following three-year PhD programme.

Each university has its own process for making this consideration, but most invite you to an interview with the supervisor you wish to conduct research with. The interview is used to confirm that you have acquired the specialised knowledge and research skills expected at masters level, and beyond that of someone capable of completing doctoral study.

If your interview goes well, you will be enrolled in your PhD programme. From this point on, your path will be the same as a regular PhD student. During your doctoral phase, you will conduct independent research and laboratory work for two years, followed by a final year of writing up and formally submitting your findings as a thesis. Your thesis, expertise and research competence will be assessed in an oral examination known as a viva. Upon successful completion of your viva, you will be officially awarded a PhD, and your studies will come to an end.

It should be noted that aside from the above, your university may offer optional modules which can equip you with a wide range of transferable skills.

Eligibility

Entry requirements for an integrated masters degree in the UK will vary from university to university, but the typical requirement is an Upper Second Class (2:1) honours Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted.

If you are an international student and English is your second language, most universities will require proof of your English language proficiency through an exam certificate. It’s best to check directly with the universities which certificate types they accept, but the most common English language qualification requirement is an IELTS certificate, with a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each category.

The typical annual tuition fee for an Integrated PhD in the UK is £4,712 per academic year for home/EU students (or £2,356 for part-time study) and £19,596 per academic year for international students (or £9,798 for part-time study).

As with all doctoral programmes, there are likely to be additional costs associated with your studies, such as bench fees for lab work, travel costs for collaborating and potential write-up fees for students who need more time to submit their thesis. Funding Opportunities

You can obtain funding for Integrated PhDs in the same way as for regular PhDs. Funding is usually provided by one of the seven UK Research Councils  and research charity organisations such as the  Wellcome Trust ; grants, scholarships and funded opportunities can be found directly in our searchable database .

Funding can either be partial (tuition fees only) or full (tuition fees and living costs). Most funding providers also cover the tuition fee for the Masters degree programme due to being integrated with the PhD, however, you should confirm this on a case-by-case basis.

As with regular PhD funding, the fully-funded opportunities are generally limited to home and EU students.

It’s also worth noting that PhD programmes which include an integrated Masters degree are eligible for a Doctoral Loan , even if you already have a postgraduate Masters degree from a previous university. Applications for Doctoral Loans must be made directly to Student Finance England and you must first be registered for a full doctoral degree. Due to application restrictions, you won’t be able to apply for a separate Postgraduate Masters Loan for the integrated Masters phase of your degree.

Funding for our CDTs and DTPs is provided by Research Councils so eligibility criteria apply for the studentships that they offer. This is outlined on the UK Research and Innovation website . They may also consider self-funding applicants for non-funded projects.

A new model of Doctoral training

Integrated PhDs provide a new model of postgraduate training. They retain the depth, rigour and focus of a conventional PhD while also providing a broader training experience.

While the specific training routes may vary, they typically consist of a one-year Master's course (MSc or MRes) which leads straight into a three-year PhD.

This new style of doctoral training is available within our Research Council-funded Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) and Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs).

CDTs and DTPs

Our CDTs and DTPs recruit cohorts of students from a broad spectrum of disciplines, creating vibrant multi-disciplinary communities.

The diversity of students recruited to these centres reflects the breadth of research which they cover.

As well as benefitting from a variety of training opportunities and cohort-building activities, students studying within these centres may also have access to a supervisor and facilities at a partner institution.

Some integrated PhDs will require you to select a research subject before applying (much like a normal PhD). Once you’ve identified a university that offers an integrated option for the subject you want to study, you’ll need to determine whether you want to propose your own research topic or apply for a PhD that has already been designed for you. In either case, reach out to potential supervisors before submitting your application.

The supervisor will be indicated in the advertisement if you are applying for a pre-designed PhD. If you created your own project, you’ll need to identify a professor whose expertise matches your research interests. In both circumstances, inform your potential supervisor that you will be applying for an integrated programme. This can help them assess if they are a good fit for the project.

Some integrated PhD programmes do not require students to choose a research subject before beginning their study. Instead, in your first year, you will engage in numerous minor research projects alongside potential supervisors, allowing you to make an educated decision on your eventual PhD topic. During your first year, you will typically develop your research proposal. This is very prevalent in STEM disciplines.

You will not need to contact prospective supervisors before applying for these projects. However, when completing your application, it is still a good idea to consider areas of research that interest you.

Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) finance many integrated PhD curricula. These are consortiums formed by groups of research entities (often universities and industry partners) that provide training for PhD cohorts and provide fully supported studentships. If you want to apply for an integrated CDT PhD (also known as a 1+3 programme), you can do so through your host university or through the CDT itself.

Any research that impacts the care and well-being of human population come under the domain of clinical research. Clinical research in a broader sense involves epidemiologic studies, clinical trials, translational research, patient-oriented research, behavioral science and, health service research. High quality data and reliable results are key to generate evidence for decision making and to provide impetus for improving patient care. To produce such data, a systematic and multidisciplinary approach is required involving a range of disciplines like basic sciences, biotechnology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, statistics, and public health and behavioral sciences.

Program Contents

The multi-disciplinary curriculum will be covered under the core & elective courses (modules). The core modules include: Basic Epidemiology, Basic Bio-statistics, Clinical Trials-Design and Analysis, Conduct and Operational Issues in Clinical Trials, Bioethics and Regulatory Affairs, Systematic Reviews, Proposal Development and Medical Writing, Data Management, Drug Development, Pharmacovigilance and Project Management. Under elective courses we offer various areas that will fall under Research Methods, Statistics and Laboratory Sciences. Following are the core competencies acquired by the candidates at the end of the Master’s program:

Program Administration and Language

The program utilizes a variety of teaching/learning techniques, which include lectures using Audio-Visual aids, demonstrations, group discussions, and presentation by students. Hands-on practice in computer-based applications and statistical software using computers will be imparted in several courses. The main language of instruction would be English. During internship, the students will get an opportunity to engage in research related activities while working in a community set up, a public health research organization, a NGO, a hospital or a laboratory.

Selection Process

All candidates should submit the application form for the Integrated MSc (Clinical Research) & PhD program in the prescribed format. The candidate can apply online or also download the application form from PHFI Website. The application consists of registration form, proof of academic credentials, work experience, contact details of two referees (academic and/ or professional) and a Statement of Purpose (SOP). The applicants will be short-listed based on their academic qualifications, relevant experience and Statement of Purpose. This will be followed by an interview. The selection of candidates will be conducted by a specially constituted screening committee represented by PHFI and AcSIR.

Program Structure

Masters in Clinical Research

The MSc program in Clinical Research is an intensive 2 year, full time program focusing on the scientific, ethical, and operational issues related to clinical research. Four semesters will be completed in 24 months. First three semesters include class room based, face to face teaching, tutorials and practical. The final semester includes 6 months of project work (with dissertation). The student needs to complete 11 compulsory core courses (modules), 4 elective courses (modules) in 18 months and submit the project report to be awarded the MSc degree. Students are encouraged for taking up internships during summer/winter breaks between semesters, or after completion of the project work, only after due formal permission from their respective supervisors. Adequate institutional support will be provided to students for smooth completion of internship.

PhD Program

The students who complete the Master’s program with a GPA of 8 and above will be eligible for the PhD program. A formal application needs to be submitted which will be screened & enrolment will be finalized by the PhD screening committee. This full 􀆟me and project based PhD program is for a minimum of 3 years. The research topic for PhD will be developed under the guidance of mentors from PHFI and AcSIR. The students are free to choose any topic of their interest ranging from basic sciences to community based studies. The student can be allocated to any of the CSIR Labs participating in the collaborative program on mutual consent.

The fee structure for MSc (Clinical Research) program for the candidates admitted in the year 2024-26 is as follows:

For Indian and South Asian Nationals

Tuition Fee:  The annual tuition fee for the students admitted for the academic session 2024-26 is Rs 2,40,000/- per student per academic year (the total tuition fee for the two year program is Rs. 4,80,000/- which includes Rs. 10,000/- admission fees and Rs. 10,000/- examination fees)

For International Candidates

Tuition Fee:  The annual tuition fee for the students admitted for the academic session 2024-26 is USD 7,200 per student per academic year.

Scholarship:  Limited number of scholarships for MSc may be awarded for the deserving and meritorious candidates, subject to availability of funds.

The Integrated  MSc and  PhD programme (3+5)

The Integrated MSc and PhD programme makes it possible to integrate the MSc programmes’ optional programme elements and the writing of the PhD dissertation. This allows students and their supervisors more time for the research element of the PhD programme.

The former 4+4 PhD is now a part of the Integrated PhD Scheme (3+5).

Admission requirements

The Integrated PhD programme is open to applicants who:

  • have completed the Bachelors degree with a good result.
  • are enrolled on an MSc programme offered by SCIENCE  or  have been offered admission to an MSc programme offered by SCIENCE
  • can coordinate and integrate the remaining ECTS of their MSc programme with the proposed PhD programme.
  • is qualified to be admitted to the PhD programme
  • have not  started writing the MSc thesis.

The academic content of the MSc programme must be related to the proposed PhD programme.  Read more requirements in the programme description below. 

Organisation of the Integrated MSc/PhD programme

The prescribed period of study for the integrated programme is five full-time equivalents (FTEs) (two for the MSc programme and three for the PhD programme). If, at commencement of the integrated 3+5 scheme, the student has passed one or more programme elements, the period of study is reduced correspondingly.

The 3+5 scheme is divided into two parts:

Part A: The student completes the MSc programme and concurrently completes one third of the PhD programme (one FTE). Part A is completed when the student completes the MSc programme and must be organized in such a way that the MSc programme is completed two years before completion of the entire integrated programme of study.

Part B : The student is a PhD student exclusively and completes the PhD programme in accordance with the approved PhD plan. Part B can be commenced once the student has completed the MSc programme (part A), and the regular assessments have been satisfactory, meaning that the student has lived up to the requirements in the PhD plan.

PhD with Integrated MSc in Neuroscience

This four-year PhD with integrated MSc based in the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) combines a fully integrated specialised taught MSc programme in Neuroscience with an individual research PhD.

Nearly two-thirds of the MSc is completed in the first year of study and one-third completed in the second year of study allowing more time to be devoted to the PhD project as knowledge and skills develop.

We recommend this option for applicants who are specifically seeking a four-year PhD programme and/or those wishing to acquire detailed specialist knowledge in neurodegeneration alongside completion of a PhD research project.

Enhanced PhD skills

In addition to a standard PhD research project, the course is designed to provide students with generic research and transferable skills, together with a thorough grounding in Neuroscience theory and practice. Taught MSc modules are taken over three years alongside a PhD research project allowing students to acquire in depth knowledge of neurodegeneration alongside research expertise in their chosen field.

Generic skills are acquired through the University's Doctoral Development Programme ( DDP ), while the School's MSc Neuroscience and Neurodegeneration programme provides core online taught modules, allowing flexible study, alongside the PhD research project. For those whose first language is not English, we also offer the option of an intensive English Language refresher course prior to the start of the course.

Successful completion of the course will result in the award of a PhD with Integrated MSc in Neuroscience. This combination of enhanced personal, theoretical and research skills gives graduates a significant advantage upon graduation.

Programme content

  • July-September ​​​​​​ Optional intensive English Language training
  • September-August Core MSc module “Introduction to Neurodegeneration” introducing the symptoms, pathology, genetics and modelling of the major neurodegenerative diseases. This module is delivered online to enable flexible study.
  • September-March Additional optional taught MSc modules. Three modules are chosen from selected modules drawn from other MSc programmes in the Medical School. These modules are taken alongside full-time MSc students.
  • PhD research project
  • Core MSc module “Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration” investigating the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration.This module is delivered online to enable flexible study.
  • Taught DDP modules may be taken to further enhance generic skills as well as general and specific scientific skills.
  • Final “Capstone” taught MSc module
  • Taught DDP modules to further enhance generic skills as well as general and specific scientific skills.
  • Presentation of work at annual 2nd year PhD research poster day

Programme assessment

All of the compulsory Masters and DDP modules are assessed by coursework or examination. Assessment of the doctoral thesis is by oral examination.

Please note that students may not be permitted to continue on the programme if they fail to make satisfactory progress on the Masters´ course or with the PhD project.

Applicants must hold a good honours degree (First or Upper Second class) in an appropriate area such as biosciences or medicine and an IELTS score of 7.0 or above with a minimum of 6.5 in each component, or equivalent

This MSc offers a strong grounding in the theoretical understanding and practical experience of key research paradigms, research designs and statistical techniques used in experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and neuropsychology.

PhD project:  Optimising the measurement of working memory for assessment of speech-in-noise perception (Supervisors: Dr Antje Heinrich, Dr Samuel Couth, Dr Rebecca Millman)

By taking the MRes, you would receive training in many of the skills that are central to successfully completing this project, such as:

  • an introduction to the theoretical foundations of memory research;
  • a systematic introduction to various experimental designs;
  • training on data analysis.

In addition, completing the MRes dissertation project would give you experience of obtaining ethics approval for experimental testing, and experience in recruiting different participant groups for testing.

Completing the MRes would prepare you to:

Experimental psychology with data science

This MSc will prepare you for a successful research career in experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience and data science.

PhD project: Infants' early understanding of word meaning (Supervisors: Dr Alissa Ferry, Prof A Theakston)

In the MRes, students will gain the essential statistical analysis skills required to support the PhD project, and have the opportunity to conduct a pilot study to begin training in the methodological aspects of the PhD project.

Medical microbiology

This MSc covers the medical and molecular aspects of bacteriology, virology, mycology, epidemiology and management of infectious diseases.

PhD project 1: Bacteriophage-based approaches for controlling infections associated with haemodialysis catheters (Supervisors: Prof Andrew McBain, Dr G Xia, Dr Anuradha Jayanti)

The MSc course will equip you with a broad and solid knowledge base and research skills in medical microbiology and infectious diseases, which will prepare you well to succeed in this PhD project with a focus on microbial pathogenesis and the development of novel antimicrobial therapies.

PhD project 2: Metals and host-pathogen interactions: the role of metal handling systems in the human gastrointestinal pathogen Campylobacter jejuni (Supervisors: Dr Jennifer Cavet, Dr D Linton)

The focus on clinical and molecular microbiology combined with development of a broad range of laboratory skills provided by the MSc Medical Microbiology is excellent preparation for this project.

During this PhD, the student will further develop their molecular microbiology research skills, studying two significant and related bacterial human pathogens that interact with the human host in fundamentally different ways. One, Campylobacter jejuni, causes an acute gastrointestinal infection, while the related Helicobacter pylori induces a chronic colonisation of the stomach.

We are particularly interested in how these bacteria obtain metals during infection and how they protect themselves from metal intoxication induced by the innate immune response.

Neuroimaging

Master's course:  MSc Neuroimaging for Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience

This MSc explores cutting-edge cognitive neuroscience techniques and their application to research in clinical and cognitive neuroscience. You'll cover the theory behind cognitive, social, behavioural, and clinical neuroscience while gaining practical data analysis and functional neuroanatomy skills.

PhD project: Understanding and optimising motor cortex plasticity (Supervisors: Dr Caroline Lea-Carnall, Dr L Parkes, Prof W El-Deredy)

By the end of the MSc, you will have gained practical experience and a theoretical understanding of data acquisition and analysis techniques required to measure structural and functional features of the brain.

In the PhD, you will use those skills to measure changes in network connectivity in the motor cortex in response to stimulation. Your theoretical knowledge will allow you to interpret the imaging data in terms of the underlying physiology.

Precision medicine

Master's course:   MSc Precision Medicine

This MSc provides training in the principles of precision, translational and stratified medicine, and the impact of individual molecular variability.

PhD project: Predicting response to IL6 inhibition in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (Supervisors: Prof A Barton, Dr D Plant, Dr Nisha Nair)

The MSc would be an ideal platform to apply for this PhD project. Students completing the MSc would have already received training on the principles of stratified medicine, as well as training in omics technologies, such as genomics and transcriptomics, which would be applied in the proposed PhD.

The PhD would allow students to apply their learning to address an important clinical question about whether we can use omics to better target the right drugs to the right patients.

Integrated Ph.D. Programme

Integrated Ph.D. Programme is a research programme. At the end of the successful completion, Master of Science and Ph.D. degree are awarded.

The first three semesters will consist of core and elective courses specialized in one subject (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics). The fourth semester will consist of advanced courses and project work. After the successful completion of comprehensive and project work, the student will continue with research leading to the Ph.D. degree.

Eligibility

  • A Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences/Chemical Sciences/ Mathematical Sciences/ Physical Sciences/ Engineering/ Technology and related areas as applicable to individual Schools, under the 10+2+3/4 system.
  • Candidates admitted to School of Physics must have a valid score in Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) .
  • The minimum requirement for admission to the programme is 55% marks or 6.0 out of 10 CGPA in the Bachelor's degree (as declared by the University).
  • Relaxation of eligibility criteria for SC/ST and PD applicants will be made according to Government of India rules.

Selection procedure

Short-listed candidates who have applied for School of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics will be called for a written test and those short-listed in the written test will appear for interview(s). In the School of Physics, candidates with a valid JEST scorecard will be called for the interview

Duration of the Programme

The maximum duration of the Integrated Ph.D. programme is 14 semesters.

The students will be awarded Institute scholarship of Rs. 10,000/- per month until the successful completion of the coursework and comprehensive examination provided the student maintains a minimum AGPA (annual grade point average) of 6.5.

After clearing the comprehensive examination the studentship will be made equivalent to that of UGC-CSIR JRF/SRF excluding the contingency grant and HRA. The studentship will be paid for a maximum of 14 semesters (including 4 semesters of course work) for each student provided (s)he is in good academic standing.

Fellowship stands automatically terminated at the end of 14 semesters for which the student registered. Fees

About the course

The aim of the taught MSc in Integrated Immunology (Full-time) is to provide a comprehensive education, high-quality research training and the professional skills required for a career in modern immunology.  We expect that our graduates will become part of the global network of immunologists within academic research, biotech and related industry, medicine or healthcare professions.

The MSc in Integrated Immunology (Full-time) course explores immunology in breadth and depth and is intended for science and medical postgraduates. It is a 12-month, full-time course comprising two 11-week taught terms followed by a 14-week research project within a University of Oxford research group. The first taught term focuses on the fundamental science of immunology, while the second explores the applied, clinical and therapeutic aspects of immunology. This MSc course is not modular in structure; all elements are compulsory for all students. Teaching is delivered across a series of linked topic themes to ensure holistic coverage of modern immunology. By the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of how the fundamental principles of immunology integrates with the clinical aspects of immune-driven disease and with other disciplines including cell and molecular biology, genetics and microbiology.

You will be taught by leading academics in immunology throughout the first two terms of the course. You will hear from a wide range of different lecturers, drawn from the University of Oxford Immunology Network, Oxford University Hospitals or external institutions. In the third term you you will undertake a project in a top-ranked research department or institute. MSc projects are provided by internationally-recognised research groups across the Medical Sciences Division. Oxford has one of the highest concentrations of research-active immunologists in the world. Students on this MSc course are therefore uniquely placed to benefit from this wealth of expertise.

Each of the two 11-week taught terms consist of nine weeks of classroom-based teaching, one for revision and one for examination. An average teaching week comprises approximately seven lectures, each lecture being 60 to 90 minutes in duration. In addition, there are small-group discussion and problem-based learning sessions, which may be led by tutors, or by students. Continuing professional development classes, including on presentation and IT skills, statistics, ethics, scientific methodologies, careers and special seminars take place throughout both taught terms. Self-directed study is required alongside structured teaching. In the third term you will undertake an original, supervised research project to gain a working understanding of research techniques in immunology or a related area. Research supervisors provide regular support and guidance during the course of the research project, and students are normally expected to work on their projects during core working hours during the week, or as agreed with their supervisor.

Students are expected to treat their studies as a full-time occupation of at least 40-hours per week.

Supervision

The allocation of graduate supervision for this course is the responsibility of the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and it is not always possible to accommodate the preferences of incoming graduate students to work with a particular member of staff. Under exceptional circumstances a supervisor may be found outside the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences.

The Course Director will be your primary supervisor throughout the course. They typically have close contact with the class during the first two terms, and will meet regularly with students to discuss their progress. In the third term day-to-day supervision is devolved to the project supervisor, however the Course Director remains available to meet with students should they wish to.

At the end of each taught term, you will take a computer-based examination to test core knowledge. Further elements of the overall assessment are a critical essay in the first term, a set of clinical case commentaries in the second term, and a research dissertation in the third term, and a final viva voce examination. Graduate destinations

The MSc in Integrated Immunology (Full-time) has run continuously since 2004. Over those years, about half of our alumni from the MSc have gone on to graduate research degrees, with a number of those taking up DPhil positions in Oxford.

Approximately a third of alumni from the MSc have continued to medical school, including Oxford, or progressed to higher specialist medical training. Others have taken up positions in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or corporate sectors as senior scientists, policy advisors, analysts and managers.

Changes to this course and your supervision

The University will seek to deliver this course in accordance with the description set out in this course page. Degree-level qualifications

As a minimum, applicants should hold or be predicted to achieve the following UK qualifications or their equivalent:

  • a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours  in a biological, biomedical or other relevant science, including interdisciplinary subjects.

However, entrance is very competitive and many successful applicants have a first-class degree or the equivalent.

An appropriate medical qualification equivalent to MBBS (MD for overseas students) is also a suitable background for applicants.

For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA sought is 3.5 out of 4.0. However, entrance is very competitive and most successful applicants have a GPA of 3.7 or above.

No Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or GMAT scores are sought.

Performance at interview

Interviews are normally held as part of the admissions process.

Applicants are shortlisted according to the criteria listed. Interviews are normally held within six weeks of each application deadline. There will normally be a minimum of two academics on the interview panel. If you are located in the UK, this may take place in person or on Microsoft Teams (preferably with video); for applicants outside the UK, the interview will take place by Microsoft Teams.

You will be asked to outline your educational background and interest in the subject, and how this course is relevant to your future plans. You will also be asked to demonstrate your basic immunological and scientific background knowledge. Interviews are approximately half an hour in length.

How your application is assessed

Your application will be assessed purely on your proven and potential academic excellence and other entry requirements described under that heading.

References  and  supporting documents  submitted as part of your application, and your performance at interview (if interviews are held) will be considered as part of the assessment process. Whether or not you have secured funding will not be taken into consideration when your application is assessed.

All resources, including lecture presentations and recommended further reading as well as material for problem-based learning sessions and/or small-group discussion classes, are made available through Canvas, the virtual learning environment for which you will receive training at the beginning of the course. During your research projects, you will become a member of the hosting research laboratory and you will be given access to its facilities and resources.

There are social events, arranged ad hoc usually by the students, and often attended by the Course Administrator and Course Director. Formal arrangements usually include a welcome drinks reception and the final dinner with the course team, examiners, mentors and course committee members.

Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences

The Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) is the academic department of surgery at the University of Oxford. It hosts a multidisciplinary team of senior clinical academic surgeons, senior scientists, junior clinicians and scientists in training.

The Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences offers research training opportunities for both clinical and non-clinical graduate students. It has a growing number of full-time funded research student opportunities. Research undertaken within the NDS covers many areas including fields such as cancer, immunology, and neurosciences, and specialities such as patient safety, transplantation, urology and vascular surgery.

The graduate research programme within NDS provides a fully integrated training environment. You will be working closely with an academic supervisor who oversees your studies.

There are no compulsory elements of this course that entail additional costs beyond fees and living costs. After one year of intensive course work, students of this integrated Master's/PhD programme can continue with a six-month thesis to obtain a Master of Science degree or join the PhD programme directly (fast-track option).

Study concept

The integrated Master's/PhD programme offers excellent study and research conditions to prepare aspiring young scientists for a professional career in academia or science-related professions in the private or public sector. At every stage of their studies, the students are exposed to a broad spectrum of theoretical and practical training, individual counselling and guidance to prepare for taking well-informed decisions on their next career steps.

Study contents

In 36 lecture weeks (accompanied by tutorials), 20 methods courses during the first three months of the Master's programme, and three eight-week research projects (lab rotations), students acquire in-depth knowledge in the following subject areas of molecular biosciences:

Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Metabolic Physiology, Cell Biology, Oncology, Immunobiology, Neurobiology, Developmental Biology, Microbiology, Systems Biology, and Biotechnology.

Professional skills such as good scientific practice, scientific writing, presentation techniques, design of scientific illustrations, and handling of experimental animals are taught in workshops and applied during lab rotations and reporting seminars.

In addition, all foreign students can participate in free German language courses, which are optionally offered at different levels as introductory intensive courses and evening courses throughout the study programme.

During the subsequent PhD studies, students benefit from the wide range of qualifications (scientific methods courses, professional skills workshops, industry excursions, language courses, other events) offered by the Graduate School GAUSS and the Graduate Center GGNB.

Annual retreats of the Molecular Biology programme, the student-organised international symposium Horizons in Molecular Biology and regular cultural nights contribute to a close personal and scientific exchange.

All MSc students are supported by a stipend of the Max Planck Society and additional funds are available during the doctoral studies. More details are in the "Funding" section.

Counselling and support

Newly admitted students receive info letters in preparation of their studies, advising services, and a variety of administrative support as part of a two-week orientation programme prior to their first year of study. Throughout their studies, students receive individual counselling from members of the programme regarding their course of study and the advancement of their skills, interests, and personal development.

The Neurosciences programme is regularly evaluated by independent external reviewers and has been rated several times as a model best practice example. Together with the Molecular Biology programme, it received the 2004 prize for excellent support services for foreign students by the Federal Foreign Minister and was awarded the label "Top 10 International Master's Degree Courses made in Germany" by "Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft" together with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in a national contest.

Leading scientists of all partners offer research-oriented training across a broad spectrum of modern molecular life sciences with access to their state-of-the art laboratories during methods courses and individually supervised research projects.

Intensive course programme in the first year

During the first year of research-oriented training, students earn 90 credits (ECTS) in a combination of theoretical and practical modules between October and July:

  • Lectures / Tutorials (October to July)
  • Methods courses (October to December)
  • Short presentations by research groups (October to November)
  • Professional skills (November to January)
  • Research projects / Lab rotations (January to June)
  • Master's seminar (March to June)

The first year of study concludes with a written and two oral Master’s examinations in August.

Integrated Master’s/PhD concept

After successful completion of the Master’s examinations, a six-month Master’s thesis (30 credits ECTS) leads to the award of the Master of Science degree concluding the Master’s programme after 18 months. The majority of students continues in the Molecular Biology programme with their PhD research without the need for panel-based admission interviews.

Alternatively, students who have passed the Master’s examinations at the end of the first year with good or excellent results qualify for direct admission to a three-year doctoral project in one of the participating research groups without being required to complete a Master's thesis first (fast-track option).

During the Master's year, all students carry out three lab rotations of eight weeks in the research labs of the programme or in research labs of participating local industry. During the doctoral phase, there is the option of research collaboration with other research institutions. A wide range of methods courses are offered in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell staining and imaging, electrophysiology, systems physiology, light and electron microscopy, and genetics.

Fees are around 400 EUR per semester. The fees include a prepaid semester ticket that entitles students to use regional trains and city buses in Göttingen free of charge. Students of the University of Göttingen receive discounts for cultural events. Meals and drinks are also available at reduced prices at all university canteens.

Semester ticket

The average cost of living in Göttingen is modest compared to other major university cities in Germany. Currently, expenses for accommodation, food, health insurance and books are about 900 EUR per month. Please note that fees for health insurance may vary according to age. Living expenses might be slightly higher.

Master's stipends: All students are supported by an International Max Planck Research School Stipend throughout their Master's studies unless they receive comparable scholarships from other sources. This stipend amounts to 934 EUR/month plus a health insurance subsidy of up to 100 EUR/month (in the case that their health insurance is not covered by their home insurance or family insurance).

PhD funding: During their PhD studies, students are usually funded by the supervising institution through work/funding contracts. The programme has a budget available for start-up, bridging, or wrap-up funding as needed.

Student activities: Budgets are available for students to attend international scientific conferences and student-organised, scientific or cultural events.

  • Eligibility: Degree programme in molecular biosciences, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, or a closely related discipline

The online application portal is open for each application round from 15 September to 15 January (start of studies: October).

In addition to the information on personal background and motivation and the upload of all relevant documents, the contact details of two reviewers for letters of recommendation should also be provided. The reviewers should be informed by the students in time about the planned application.

All applicants will be informed in the second half of January whether they have qualified for the second selection round (15-minute online interviews at the end of January).

During a third selection round in mid-February, admission decisions are made on the basis of two personal interviews (30 minutes each).

Very good knowledge of English is required. If English is not the native language, the language skills can be proven, for example, by an internationally recognised language test, an English-language Bachelor's degree or an extended stay in an English-speaking country. Knowledge of the German language is not required.

Integrated Ph. D

This Integrated Ph.D. program is open for students with Bachelor’s degree , highly meritorious, and motivated towards fundamental research in Natural Sciences such as physics, chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, evolutionary and developmental biology. However, for the current academic year, only Physics discipline is available, with a choice of specialization in (i) Astrophysics, (ii) Nuclear Physics. A student in this program, would complete the courses mandatory for a Ph.D., along with the courses essential for an MSc., during the first two semesters, and also acquire ample research experience by working on a research project, during the 3 rd and the 4 th semesters. Ph.D. level work begins at the 5 th semester. Such a student would be more equipped, than a regular MSc student, while beginning to do Ph.D. level work. 

The focus would be to bring out the research skills of a motivated Bachelor student. Added courses and projects, at Master’s and Ph.D. levels, would aim at building the student’s strength in the concept, and in the experimental, analytical, modeling and computational skills, towards understanding a complex natural phenomenon, even while pursuing studies for the Ph.D. degree, on a frontier problem in the chosen discipline.

Since the emphasis is on high quality research work, a student obtaining Ph.D. degree under this program would have acquired remarkable skills in research, from approach to the problem to its solution, and hence would have a competitive edge while seeking an academic position or employment as a professional researcher in a reputed institution in India or abroad.

The MSc.Ph.D. dual degree in Operations Research is an integrated doctoral programme, for those interested in a research oriented career.  The programme is open for students with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Statistics, and interested in research in engineering / interdisciplinary areas. The academic programme leading to the MSc.Ph.D. dual degree involves foundation courses, advanced courses and research work. The candidate will be awarded both the MSc. and Ph.D. degrees simultaneously on successful completion of the program.

Semester-wise Credits Distribution for MScPhD

Key Points:

  • Course-work for MScPhD dual degree programme to be completed in first 2 years (4 semesters).
  • Electives : Of the minimum of 6 electives (36 credits) required, at least 1 Institute elective (6 credits) and at least 4 IE labeled department electives(of which one to be an 'Applied elective', and one from ‘Approved list’ as specified by IEOR DPGC) to be taken.
  • Students need to maintain a minimum CPI of 7.0 at the end of Semester 3 and all subsequent semesters to continue for Ph.D.
  • Should inform the department by the end of the Semester 3.
  • In lieu of MScPhD Project 2 in Semester 4, they can instead do at least 12 credits through electives/ R&D project.
