Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for school students (Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Standard).

Introduction:

My father is my hero and guide in my life. He is the one I look upon whenever I find myself in trouble. My father has been my guiding force for all my major decisions in life. In fact, I have never regretted adhering to his advice as it has always worked for me. He is a hardworking and passionate person. My father has a love for movies. Whenever he gets time, he just loves to watch an old movie. In fact, at times we just fight as to who gets control of the television. But at heart, we love to tease each other and play as well.

My father does not like to sit idle. At times, on holidays if he finds me and my sister doing nothing and just idling our time, he gives us some task or the other. He is also much organised and keeps all his documents in a properly organised manner.

My Father – My Role Model:

My father is my role model for many reasons. First and foremost I admire his passion for work. That is why he is so respected in his office as well. He is always there to help his colleagues even if it is not his work. In fact, one can always see him spending weekends helping others out. Moreover, my father is a simple man. He does not like expensive things and lives an easy and peaceful life. Also, he never shouts on anyone of us. I wonder if he ever gets angry on anything as he takes everything so calmly and takes his time to decide upon things.

My Father – My Friend:

My father is my friend as well. I can discuss everything with my father, even those that I dare not speak in front of my mother. I know that he shall keep it a secret and give the advice I need. He is the one whom I can rely upon blindly during any hour of need, and I know that he shall be there for me.

Importance of My Father in My Life:

My father plays an important role in the family. He is in fact considered as the head of the family. However, I feel that both father and mother have a distinctive role to play in bringing up their children. While on hand my mother has s soft heart, it is my father who shows courage and strength which his children will later on imbibe as their qualities. He can be firm at times, but be rest assured it is always for the benefit of the children.

Conclusion:

There is no doubt that my father’s role is vital in my life. His presence is vital for maintaining the balance and peace in my family. A father is the one who earns the badge of the stricter parent and whose denial of permission for anything means a lot to the children. I also admire my father and try to imbibe his qualities so that I become like him when I grow up.

My father is a person who takes care of my family and loves each one of us dearly. My father acts as the pillar of support and strength for my family.

My father is the person that I admire the most in my life. I can never forget all the childhood memories that I have with him. It is safe for me to say that my father is largely the reason behind my present joy and happiness. I can say that I am the person who I am today and the person that I am growing to be, is all because of the influence he has had and is having on me. He always makes time to play with me and catch up on all the happenings in my life even after the hard work of the day.

My father is one man who is very unique and different. I always feel lucky anytime I remember that he is my father knowing how he has done the very best for me in life. I always feel grateful that I have the opportunity to be his son and be a part of a wonderful family that has a great father like him. My father has shown himself to be a very peaceful and polite person. He seldom scolds me and he is always easy with me. What he tries to do is that he makes sure that I realise the mistake that I have made in a very polite way and helps me to get better and this has been working like magic for many years now.

My father is the leader and head of our family. He is always there for every member of the family to help us in times when we need his advice and direction in taking decisions. Anytime we have a problem, we take it to him, he tries to help us by sharing some of the problems that he also faced in the past that are quite similar to our problem and how he was able to overcome them. He also shares all of his achievements and drawbacks in life and tells us to learn from them.

My father has his personal online marketing business but he never insists any of his children to pursue a career in that same field so that we can take over after him. He does not even try to attract any of us to his business but he tries to teach how we can discover our own passion and fields of interest in life. He does his best to encourage us in the pursuance of our various dreams. I can boldly say that my dad is a very good dad and this is not as a result of him always helping me and being nice to me but because he shows great strength, knowledge, a good helping and nice nature. He also owns very good human relations skills.

My father’s parents were very poor when he was growing up but with hard work and patience, my father was able to become very rich. He uses this as an example to encourage me to always work hard.

I share all of my happy, sad and bad moments with him and he also does the same. He is always around to share with me all of his life experiences and how I can learn from them. My father also tells me all about his day and every event that occurred during the day. He is doing all his best to ensure that I grow up to become a very successful person that has good character and behaviour.

My father always teaches me ethics, humanity and etiquettes of life that can help me in future. My father is always ready and willing to help the people who are needy around us and he tells us that giving is the most important thing in life. My father also teaches my siblings and me how to be happy, healthy and fit throughout our lives.

My father has shown himself to be very good to all the members of my extended family. If anyone of us is facing a particular problem, my father is usually the first person we go to for advice and help. My father has over the years proven to be a person who has a very kind heart and I can boldly say that he is my best friend and my hero.

About My Father:

Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.

Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.

My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.

He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.

Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.

Why I like my father:

One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.

He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.

He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.

He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.

Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.

Things I Learned from My Father:

I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.

I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.

Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.

A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.

My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.

He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.

From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Personality

My father is my favourite personality. He has been a constant source of inspiration and guidance in my life. He is a man of great integrity and a hard worker who has always led by example. He is the one who taught me the importance of honesty, responsibility and the value of hard work.

I remember a real-life incident from my childhood that perfectly illustrates the kind of person my father is. When I was around 10 years old, my family and I were on a trip to a nearby city. We were shopping in a mall when I saw a toy that I really wanted. I begged my father to buy it for me, but he refused, saying that we had already spent enough money on the trip. I was disappointed, but I didn't understand why he was being so strict.

After we left the mall, my father took me aside and explained that we didn't have a lot of money, and that every purchase we made needed to be carefully considered. He said that he didn't want me to grow up thinking that I could always have whatever I wanted, and that I needed to learn the value of money. I didn't fully understand at the time, but I knew that my father was trying to teach me an important lesson.

Years later, as I grew older and started to understand more about the world and about money, I realized how wise my father's decision had been. He had taught me the importance of being responsible with money, and had helped me to develop a sense of financial literacy that has served me well throughout my life.

My father has always been there for me, providing guidance and support whenever I needed it. He has taught me the importance of being a good person, of treating others with respect, and of always doing the right thing, even when it's difficult. He is a true role model, and I am so grateful to have him as my father.

In addition to being an amazing father, my dad is also an incredible husband and provider for our family. He always puts his family first and works hard to make sure that we have everything we need. He is a great listener and always has wise advice to offer when I am struggling with something. He is a great cook and loves to spend time in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes. He is also a fitness enthusiast and encourages us to stay active and healthy. He is always the first one up in the morning, ready to start his day and the last one to go to bed. He is truly a selfless and dedicated person who always puts the needs of his family before his own.

One of the things that I admire most about my father is his work ethic. He is a businessman and runs his own company. He works incredibly hard to ensure the success of his business and to provide for our family. He is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that his clients are satisfied, and he is highly respected in the business community. He taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance and that nothing comes easy.

My father is also an incredibly compassionate and caring person. He has always been involved in various social causes and volunteer work. He has always been passionate about helping those in need and making a positive difference in the world. He taught me that with privilege comes responsibility and that we have a duty to use our resources and abilities to help others.

In conclusion, my father is my favourite personality because he is a true role model and an inspiration to me. He has taught me so many valuable lessons throughout my life, and I am forever grateful to him for his guidance, support and love. He is the reason why I am who I am today, and I am so proud to call him my father.

Essay 1: My Favourite Personality Is My Mother

Essay 2: my favourite personality is my father, personal qualities.

My favourite personality is my mother. She is kind, compassionate, and always willing to help others. She has a great sense of humor and can always make me laugh, even when I’m feeling down.

Growing up, my mother was always there for me. She was the one who helped me with my homework, took me to my extracurricular activities, and was always there to listen when I needed to talk. She taught me the importance of hard work and determination and instilled in me a strong set of values that have stayed with me to this day.

One of the things I admire most about my mother is her selflessness. She is always putting the needs of others before her own and is always willing to go out of her way to help someone in need. Whether it’s volunteering at the local food bank, helping a neighbor in need, or simply lending an ear to a friend who is going through a tough time, my mother is always there to offer support and assistance.

Another quality that I admire about my mother is her strength. She has faced numerous challenges in her life, but she has always remained positive and has never let adversity get the best of her. She has taught me that no matter what life throws your way, you can always overcome it if you stay strong and believe in yourself.

In addition to her kindness and compassion, my mother is also very intelligent and hardworking. She has always been an avid learner, and she has instilled in me the importance of education and self-improvement. She has a degree in engineering and has worked in the field for many years, always challenging herself and pushing the boundaries of what she is capable of.

Despite her busy schedule, my mother always makes time for her loved ones. She is an amazing cook and loves to spend time in the kitchen, experimenting with new recipes and creating delicious meals for her family. She also enjoys spending time outdoors, and she often takes me on hikes or camping trips where we can enjoy the beauty of nature together.

My mother is my favourite personality because she is kind, compassionate, and selfless. She has taught me the importance of hard work, determination, and the value of helping others. She is a constant source of strength and support, and I am grateful to have her in my life.

In conclusion, my mother is a truly incredible person who has had a profound impact on my life. I am so grateful to have her as a role model and am inspired by her strength, intelligence, and kindness every day.

My father is a role model and the most important person in my life. He has made a profound impact on me and has shaped me into the person I am today. His love, support, and guidance have been instrumental in my growth and success, and I am grateful for everything he has done for me. In this essay, I will share with you why my father is my favourite person and how he has influenced my life.

My father was born and raised in a small town in Pakistan. Despite growing up in poverty, he worked hard and was determined to succeed. He earned a scholarship to attend college, where he excelled in his studies and graduated with honors.

After completing his education, my father started his career as a teacher. He was passionate about education and dedicated himself to helping his students. He was known for his innovative teaching methods and his ability to connect with his students. He eventually moved on to work in the private sector, where he climbed the ranks and became a successful business executive.

My father’s parenting skills are unparalleled. He is patient, understanding, and always willing to listen. He has instilled in me the importance of hard work, honesty, and perseverance. He has taught me how to be independent and to always stand up for what I believe in. He has also taught me how to be a good person and to treat others with kindness and respect.

In his free time, my father enjoys reading, playing chess, and gardening. He has a green thumb and has created a beautiful garden in our backyard. He also volunteers at a local community center, where he teaches chess to children.

My father is an incredibly kind and generous person. He is always willing to help others, even if it means putting himself out. He has a great sense of humor and always knows how to make me laugh. He is also an excellent listener and has been there for me through thick and thin.

In conclusion, my father is my favourite person because he is the best role model and the most important person in my life. He has taught me so much and has made a profound impact on me. I am grateful for everything he has done for me and I hope to make him proud. He is truly the best father in the world.

Why I’m Teaching My Daughter My Mother’s Language

A beautiful young mother throws the baby into her arms. Banner about childhood and motherhood with copy space. Flat vector concept illustration with a pink background.

L ate in January 2024, cantilevered over my husband’s shoulder in line at our favorite coffeeshop, my toddler roared out one of her usual requests: “Tata, please bring maca and capall to folcadan.”

“Oh honey,” the woman standing behind us laughed. “That’s a mouthful.”

My husband explained that our daughter was asking him to bring her farmhouse figurines, a cat and a horse, along to the bathtub. (Reader, there was no bathtub; or rather, the bathtub was at home, as were the cat and the horse figurines.)

“What language is she speaking?” the stranger wanted to know.

We explained the linguistic arrangement of our household: my husband is from Dublin, and speaks Irish; I was born in the former Yugoslavia, and speak Serbian; we met in New York and communicate in English. Now living in Wyoming, we are trying our best to raise our daughter with all three languages.

I am still surprised by how many people smirk when they hear this. “Oh wow,” they tend to say. " That’ll be useful.”

What they mean, I assume, is that neither Serbian nor Irish is an especially proliferate language. Irish, spoken by an estimated 1.2 million people , is categorized as “definitely endangered” by the UNESCO Atlas of World Languages. Serbian is the first language of about 7.2 million people —though, once you venture outside the post-war nationalist designations that characterize Serbian as being entirely separate from, say, Croatian or Bosnian, the reach of the language grows. Still, native speakers tend to be concentrated in their countries of origin, as well as a smattering of communities to which they emigrated, as most of my maternal family did, after the wars of the 1990s. So if a language’s usefulness is measured by its ability to connect the speaker with a large proportion of the earth’s population, then yes, I suppose Irish and Serbian are surely on the lower end of the spectrum.

But I grew up measuring linguistic utility by a different set of parameters. Ones that spoke more to my family’s urge to seclude than their desire to connect.

My grandfather, a Slovene born and raised in Belgrade, spoke Ekavian, a standard dialect of what was then known as Serbo-Croatian. My grandmother, ethnically Muslim, spoke Ijekavian, a lilting dialect of Bosnia & Herzegovina that tends to lean into Turkish and Arabic roots. My mother, their only child, born in Sarajevo and raised in Belgrade, was a chameleon: she could, and still can, easily switch between both. When the war broke out, we moved first to Cyprus, then to Egypt. I managed to maintain fluency largely thanks to my grandmother’s dogged refusal to learn English, and my mother’s insistence that one must never lose one’s native language.

Her reasons for this had to do with its utility, but as a mechanism of preservation rather than communication. As is true of many immigrants, our language served as a container of all things home. Proverbs, jokes, witticisms rooted in socio-historical context. Family stories. Recipes. Swear words, of course—and lots of them. Translation eroded some aspect of them all, and thus eroded the parts of my grandparents and mother that made them their whole, complex, fully rounded selves.

But most crucially for my mother, Serbian served as a kind of escape hatch out of precarious situations. She would glide in and out of the language, usually as a protective measure against threats that were not apparent to me. “Start crying,” she might say in Serbian, when she realized that strange men were following us around a grocery store. “Make a scene.”

We were fortunate at that time to be living in places that had huge international communities, and where the use of a foreign language was not something to be remarked upon, or even noticed, as it often is in America. My peers at the small international school I attended were the children of expatriates and asylum seekers from all over the world. Bilinguality was the default. But even then, most people’s second language was Greek or French or Dutch or Arabic, and the communities to whom this language was available were bigger. My mother and grandparents and I were cocooned by the rarity of our language.

(Of course, sometimes we misjudged the extent of that rarity. In one particularly memorable instance, a little while after we had come to the United States, a woman banged her grocery cart into my mother in a Walmart parking lot. My mother smiled cheerfully. “Go fuck yourself,” she said in Serbian, and steered our cart away. A few minutes later, the woman caught up to us in the produce aisle. “Excuse me,” she said, also in Serbian. “ You go f*xck yourself. ”)

For the most part, our shared language served as a fulcrum of our relationship, a kind of room to which my mother and I could both teleport, a place of secrets and frustrations. To this day, in heated exchanges, we both head there, all the better to hurl invectives that are as precise as possible at one another. When I want to share something difficult or emotionally charged with my mother, I tend to say, “I don’t know how to say this.” Her inevitable response is, “probaj maternjim”—try your mother tongue. Every so often, some long-forgotten word or phrase comes slamming out of the disused recesses of my memory. I ask my mother about its etymology, and then look for ways to use it in conversation with her, or translate it to see if it works in conversational English. When that fails, it inevitably ends up in my writing.

All this, the good and the bad, reinforces the bond between us. I want this bond for myself and my daughter, my daughter and her father, his people and mine.

At the heart of this desire, I think, is the life each of us can allow ourselves to imagine for our children. When my mother named me “Tea,” she did not imagine that I would end up living in a country, much less making my living in a language, in which that particular arrangement of letters had an entirely different pronunciation and meaning—one that would, I must pettily admit, frustrate me forever. She did not imagine that the war would come, that her homeland would tear itself apart, and that the things she thought she knew, and the life for which she sought to prepare me, would no longer be useful. If there’s one thing I know, it’s that I, too, have no idea what may or may not be useful for my daughter. I want her to speak my language, and her father’s, too, because I want her to be a chameleon, like my mother is; because I have no idea what camouflage she will need to survive the things I cannot imagine.

Dear Annie: I was blindsided by divorce after 27 years, and hurts didn’t stop there

  • Published: Mar. 23, 2024, 3:04 a.m.

'Dear Annie' columnist Annie Lane

Annie Lane writes the Dear Annie advice column. Creators.com

Dear Annie: My name is “Stephanie,” and my husband’s name is “Travis.” Travis and I have been married for 27 years. About six months ago, I was blindsided with divorce papers. He and his mom made the decision. Yes, you read that right. Anyhow, my husband and I still live together, and the divorce has not moved forward for various reasons. His entire family has completely disowned me, with the exception of my father-in-law, who didn’t get involved.

Travis’ father, my father-in-law, suddenly passed away recently. It was heartbreaking. I sent food, etc. because that is who I am. When the obituary came out online and in the paper, my name wasn’t in it. My husband’s name and our children’s names were, of course, but my name wasn’t. I am so hurt by this. My father-in-law and I always had a good relationship, and I feel like Travis and his mother did it out of spite. I know they did. In my opinion, that was disrespectful to both his father and to me.

How could people be so cruel? How do I move past this? What are your thoughts? Thank you. -- “Stephanie” Left Out in PA

Dear Stephanie: I’m sorry for the loss of your father-in-law, especially during an already difficult time for you and your marriage. After almost three decades of calling Travis’ family your own, you have every right to feel hurt, excluded and disrespected by their behavior. Ultimately, this action speaks much louder of their character than of yours.

Initiate a conversation with Travis to express how this exclusion made you feel and establish a way to interact and cohabit as you move toward finalizing the divorce. It is disappointing that the people you’ve been closest to have started to act in unrecognizable ways, but remember, you can only control your reactions and behavior. Lean on your true friends and loved ones while you grieve both your father-in-law and your marriage.

The Burden of Being Senator Bob Menendez’s Famous Children

Alicia Menendez is a weekend anchor on MSNBC. Her brother, Rob, is a member of Congress. The bribery scandal surrounding their father has cast a long shadow.

By Katherine Rosman and Tracey Tully

It was the night before federal prosecutors would reveal explosive bribery charges against Senator Robert Menendez, and his adult children appeared unaware of the news storm that was about to hit the family.

Alicia and Rob Menendez seemed to be in great spirits at a glitzy political gala celebrating a new generation of Latino leaders.

Ms. Menendez, an increasingly high-profile anchor on the cable news network MSNBC, stood before a room filled with Latino politicians, media executives and entertainment figures, as the emcee of the annual Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute party in Washington.

Among those in attendance was her brother, a Democratic congressman from New Jersey who is in his first term representing a majority Hispanic district, a seat once held by his father.

In her opening remarks that evening last fall, Ms. Menendez exuded confidence, poise and glamour. The event was a triumph for the Menendezes, who hammed it up in selfies that Ms. Menendez shared the following morning.

“So fun to host @chcidc ’s 46th Annual Awards Gala,” she wrote on Instagram. “Sibling time was a bonus.”

The Menendezes have surely enjoyed the privileges of being children of a powerful political leader. But the very next day, they began to confront — not for the first time — a corollary dynamic: the anguish and embarrassment of having their father accused of public corruption.

Amid heart emojis in praise of her performance the night before, Ms. Menendez’s Instagram feed became littered with comments like “How corrupt is your family?” and “Your dad’s going to the gallows.”

Since then, the drama has been relentless. Just this month, new developments have underscored the gravity of the case against the Menendezes’ father, who, with his wife, Nadine Menendez, is accused of accepting bribes of gold, cash and a Mercedes-Benz in exchange for an array of political favors.

After a former ally pleaded guilty and began cooperating with prosecutors, Senator Menendez and Nadine Menendez were additionally charged with obstructing justice. Both have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Alicia and Rob Menendez used to be game to talk publicly about their father, joking about his penchant for playing Super Mario Bros., his love of musical theater — “Wicked” is his favorite show, they said in a 2011 campaign ad — and his bragging about being on the varsity bowling team in high school.

These days, they are understandably less eager to talk about him. But their desire for privacy is complicated by the fact that they too are public figures who cannot, without sacrificing their own careers, avoid a public spotlight.

Rob Menendez, 38, is fighting for political survival in a Democratic primary that falls less than a month after the day his father’s trial is expected to start, May 6. The men share a name, and Senator Menendez has not ruled out running for re-election — leaving open the possibility that both could appear on the same ballot and confuse voters.

Alicia Menendez, 40, has been forced to address the charges against her father — and calls for his resignation — on live television.

The legal drama has unfolded in parallel with important events in the siblings’ own careers. Earlier this month, a judge ordered Senator Menendez and his wife back to court just as Alicia and Rob were preparing for President Biden’s State of the Union address — Alicia would be contributing to MSNBC’s live coverage of the event, and Rob would be in attendance, a member of the congressional assembly.

Friends and colleagues say that it is a challenging time emotionally and professionally for Alicia and Rob Menendez, both of whom declined through spokesmen to comment for this article.

They are unlikely — however unfair it may be — to escape the stigma of the allegations against their father, said Sally Quinn, the longtime Washington Post writer who does not know the Menendezes but has observed the familial fallout of political scandal from the Nixons to the Clintons to the Cuomos to the Trumps.

“When your close loved one is at the center of a political scandal,” she said, “it’s in your obit too.”

‘A quick break’

On the afternoon of Jan. 2, Alicia Menendez was sitting in the most high-profile seat of her career, filling in for Nicolle Wallace on the highly rated MSNBC news show “Deadline: White House.”

She was conducting a live interview with an airline safety consultant when she abruptly ended the conversation. “We’re going to take a quick break, and we’ll be back with some breaking news right after this,” she said .

Seconds later, Ms. Menendez was gone, and a colleague was on the air in her place. “Hello, I’m Ari Melber with some breaking legal news,” he said. “New Jersey United States Senator Robert Menendez now facing new allegations in a second superseding indictment.”

Ms. Menendez’s quick exit that day was part of a promise she had made to viewers months earlier, when her father was first indicted.

“I have been watching along with all of you as a citizen, and also as his daughter,” she said on the air in September. “I will not be reporting on the legal case.”

In the past, she has described herself as someone who cries easily, but that day she betrayed no emotion. She concluded by saying that her colleagues would continue to cover the story, “as they should.”

Asked if MSNBC was troubled by the complications of Ms. Menendez’s connection to the subject of a significant political scandal, a spokesman for the network declined to comment or to make available any of her colleagues, producers or bosses to discuss her work.

Ms. Menendez has been grappling with the realities of being a politician’s daughter for years. “You can’t have a private life as an elected official,” she told The Washington Post in 2013. “It’s not a family-friendly institution.”

She and her brother were raised in Union City, N.J., a densely packed city in northern New Jersey that for decades has been a hub of immigrant life. Their father is the child of Cuban immigrants, and their mother, Jane Jacobsen, is of Irish-German-Norwegian descent — a “gringa,” as Alicia wrote in a 2012 essay . She said that Ms. Jacobsen helped to instill in her children a strong Latino identity, even if they did not speak Spanish. (Their parents divorced in 2005.)

When she and her brother were young, their mother was a teacher and guidance counselor, and the family lived in an apartment above their father’s law firm. “He was terrible at making money,” Ms. Menendez told The Washington Post.

Mr. Menendez became mayor of Union City and was elected to Congress when Alicia was 9. She spent “Take Your Daughter to Work” days at the Capitol. Though Mr. Menendez traveled frequently to Washington, he remained a demanding figure. “Dad was an original tiger mom,” she told The New York Times in 2015.

Ms. Menendez landed at Harvard University, class of 2005. She majored in women’s studies, was the president of an elite “final club” and considered herself an “ethnically ambiguous feminist,” she said in a 2004 article in The Harvard Crimson.

Her ambitions were set on politics. She worked for Jon Corzine’s New Jersey gubernatorial campaign (when Mr. Corzine won, he appointed then-Representative Robert Menendez to his seat in the U.S. Senate). And she managed the campaigns of peers running for Harvard student government, including Rohit Chopra, now director of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

“She really could sell a pork chop to a rabbi,” Mr. Chopra said, describing Ms. Menendez’s political skills to The Crimson in 2004.

She worked in television production and progressive politics, eventually focusing on media. She appeared on HuffPost Live, Fusion and PBS before landing at MSNBC in 2019.

She is also the host of a podcast, “ Latina to Latina ,” a weekly interview show, now in its sixth year. As an interviewer, “she has this ability to bring people to the point of self-discovery,” said Juleyka Lantigua , who owns and produces the podcast with Ms. Menendez.

At MSNBC, she was the solo anchor of the network’s “American Voices” program, which first aired in 2020, and is now one of three anchors on “The Weekend,” with Michael Steele and Symone D. Sanders Townsend.

Ms. Menendez is a go-to source of support and strategy for friends, said Jose Antonio Vargas, a journalist and immigrant rights activist.

Before Mr. Vargas, who was born in the Philippines, revealed himself to be an undocumented immigrant in a 2011 New York Times Magazine story , he turned to Ms. Menendez for advice. He stayed on her couch in her Washington apartment, and she prepared him to answer tough questions from the public and from TV personalities like Bill O’Reilly. “She is the kind of person that you want in a crisis,” Mr. Vargas said.

(Ms. Menendez has interviewed Mr. Vargas on her news shows, as she has other friends, including Mr. Chopra, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director, who declined to comment.)

In a crisis of her own, Ms. Menendez has maintained her composure, Mr. Vargas said. Last fall, she joined him for a Broadway performance of “ Here Lies Love ,” a play he helped to produce. It was the first time he had seen her since her father was first indicted.

“How are you holding up?” he asked her.

“I am OK,” he said she told him, in a manner that didn’t invite further questions. “I can tell from the way she looked at me that that was all I could ask .”

‘His father’s umbrella’

While Alicia Menendez has seemingly found a way to keep the bribery scandal at arm’s length, it has been more difficult for her brother, whose career is more overtly tied to their father.

Two years ago, Rob Menendez announced he would run for his father’s former congressional seat, and he was instantly embraced by a cadre of powerful New Jersey politicians, essentially guaranteeing him a win in the heavily Democratic district. He traded a job at a law firm where he was earning $456,000 a year for a seat in Washington and a commuter marriage — something his father cautioned, from experience, would be a strain on his wife and two young children, according to a confidant of both men.

He has since focused heavily on constituent services and sought to carve out a bipartisan policy niche . It is an effort driven by a desire to prove his mettle and to dispatch the whispers that he is in Congress only because he was anointed, according to interviews with more than a dozen colleagues, constituents and friends.

“He has really made strides to get out from under — from the beginning — his father’s umbrella,” said Jimmy Davis, the mayor of Bayonne, N.J., one of the largest cities in the congressional district. “His thing was to make his mark and to set his own legacy.”

But even as he tries to chart his own course, he appears intent on remaining the same loyal son who, at 32 years old, was the first witness called by his father’s defense team during an unrelated 2017 corruption trial that ended with a hung jury.

In September, after Senator Menendez was again charged with accepting bribes, a cascade of prominent Democrats in New Jersey began calling for the senator’s resignation.

Rob Menendez has not.

“He’s my father,” he said in a recent interview on PBS , by way of explanation.

“In a situation where a family member is going through a challenge, you support them,” he added, noting that “everybody deserves their shot in court to present their case.”

But there is little doubt that his father’s legal troubles have cast a shadow on Rob Menendez’s re-election effort.

In a state where party bosses can tamp down most viable primary challenges, particularly for popular incumbents, he is locked in a spirited contest for the Democratic nomination with the mayor of Hoboken, Ravi Bhalla.

Unlike in his first race in 2022, Rob Menendez struggled to raise money last year; as of January Mr. Bhalla had raised three times as much for the June 4 primary. Senator Menendez’s trial is scheduled to take place in the weeks before the election, creating a potential public-relations disaster for his son.

“Clearly it is a horrible situation, and he doesn’t deny that,” said Bill Matsikoudis, a political supporter and friend. The congressman’s strategy, Mr. Matsikoudis said, was to “double down on his work in the capital” and to be omnipresent in the district.

“I’ve seen some pretty impressive maturity, actually,” Mr. Matsikoudis said.

But in late January, a social media feud flared between Mr. Menendez and Mr. Bhalla that vividly demonstrated his vulnerabilities.

Mr. Bhalla called Mr. Menendez the “entitled son of corrupt Bob ‘Gold Bar’ Menendez.” Mr. Menendez said Mr. Bhalla’s “posturing” about ending machine politics in New Jersey “was as believable as Donald Trump being a stable genius.”

Each campaign has since released an internal poll that showed their candidate had the edge, and Democratic strategists expect the election to be close.

“Rob came out of the gate already swinging,” said Hector Oseguera, a left-leaning Democrat who competed in 2020 for the seat Rob Menendez now holds and has been following the race closely. “That says he’s concerned.”

We left our busy lives in London to raise sheep on a remote island in Scotland. It's changed us for the better.

  • Jason and Yvonne Lancaster, 50 and 55, moved to an island in the Inner Hebrides after one visit.
  • The couple ran a consulting agency in London but were looking for a slower pace of life.
  • They now raise a flock of 16 sheep on their croft and say the island feels like home.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jason Lancaster, a 55-year-old who moved from London to Tiree, Scotland. It's been edited for length and clarity.

We hadn't intended to move to a remote Scottish island. But when my wife, Yvonne, and I rocked up to Tiree, a 12-mile-long island on the west coast of Scotland, it felt like home.

We had gone to Scotland in April 2018 to visit our solicitors. At the time, we lived in a flat on the Thames in London and ran our branding consultancy "Dutch Engels."

In London , we were focused on work. Our clients were global, so it was relentless. On busy morning commutes, the questions "Why are we doing this?" and "Is there something else?" were always in our minds.

We knew within 15 minutes we wanted to move to the island

While in Scotland, one of the partners suggested we also visit the west coast for a break. After a quick Google, we got the ferry to Tiree, a remote island in the Inner Hebrides with turquoise water and white sand.

It was a gorgeous day with no wind. While looking out at Tiree's beautiful harbor, a man walked over and started talking to us. That wouldn't ever happen in London. It took about 15 minutes for us to decide we wanted to move there. Yvonne and I felt like this island was the next stage of our life together.

You get a short time on the planet, and as you get older, it gets shorter. This feeling was being driven home by Yvonne's father, who had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. We decided to throw caution to the wind and move to Tiree. Our friends thought we were nuts.

Moving to a remote location is tiresome

I returned to London and started moving while Yvonne went to the Netherlands to care for her father.

We owned one property in London and lived in another rented apartment. We put our flat on the market, and it sold quickly . Over the following months, while Yvonne was in the Netherlands with her father, I hired the largest van I could, packed everything up, and drove it to Tiree.

You can only get to the island by ferry or plane. It's an 11-hour drive, plus a four-hour ferry, so about 15 hours each way. It took 10 journeys. I shudder every time someone talks about moving.

Related stories

We moved to Tiree in October 2018. We rented a traditional croft house for £800 a month — our rent in London was over £3,000. We planned to continue our consultancy business remotely. Some clients wanted to continue working with us; anyone who didn't, we directed to people who could take over our contracts.

Our life on Tiree couldn't be more different from busy London

Our life on Tiree is totally different from in London. Around 400 to 500 people live permanently on the island. Tiree doesn't have restaurants, but everything is on your doorstep. Our post comes in on a tiny plane from Glasgow , and bigger packages are delivered by ferry. We never lock your doors or your car. And on the beach, you can walk for miles without seeing another person.

In London, you never talk to anybody on your journey from home to work. On Tiree, I've probably spoken to another crofter, a small-scale farmer, before I've even left the house. You know everyone. I imagine it's how life was 70 years ago.

For an island with far fewer people than London, disconnected from the mainland, you still get amazing experiences. This tiny place has musicians coming out of its ears. We have a yearly Tiree Music Festival, where 5,000 people arrive on the island. A week later, it's empty again.

There are pluses and minuses to living here

There are nuances to living on an island. You have to be fairly thick-skinned. People come and go, so you're met with skepticism: "Are you going to be useful to the island or a hindrance?" You'll have people you get on well with and people who don't like you even though they've never met you. This experience is universal but more immediate in Tiree.

People expect the island to be cold, but it doesn't drop below 8 degrees Celsius. Rain and wind are a big part of your life. The rain doesn't fall downwards; it blows horizontally. One of the things you learn quickly is to park your car facing the wind so they don't get ripped off when you open your doors.

In the summer, the sun barely goes down. The sunrises and sunsets blow your mind — the colors are amazing. Living in this kind of environment is breathtaking. I don't think you would ever get bored of the scenery.

We wanted to live a slower life, then we got sheep

When we moved to Tiree, we wanted to slow down our consultancy work and life. That plan lasted about six weeks. Over a cup of tea, the crofter renting us our house, asked: "Would you like to look after an orphan lamb?"

I agreed without thinking about it, though we knew nothing about sheep. Our crofter friend showed us how to look after them. It was certainly a learning process. The initial shock was around six months but got easier over time.

We've got 16 sheep now. They all have individual personalities. Most people send their lambs to slaughter after six months. Ours became part of the family, so that will never happen, but raising our flock has cost us a small fortune.

We started a handmade hat business alongside our agency work in 2019 to offset the costs. We collect fleeces from our sheep, hand spin the wool, and knit the hats. Everything is done by hand. The only reason we make these hats is so that the sheep can benefit. That's what drives us.

The sheep have been a gateway drug into how we use our land, grow things, and live. It has changed who we are. We appreciate the landscape and nature more. We try to live slower, more connected lives.

Tiree felt like home within 20 minutes

We felt immediately at home here; it's why we moved and took in our first lamb and who we are now. It's about listening to that inner feeling.

I think we've lost the ability to believe in our guts in modern society. Saying yes was a gut reaction: we didn't think, we just went for it. It's changed our lives for the better.
