Alma College MFA in Creative Writing Program Announces Italy Residency

ALMA — In the spirit of powerful authors such as Lord Byron, Henry James and Daphne du Maurier, the Alma College Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing program is going to Italy.

A residency at the Veneto region of Italy, including the historic city of Venice and its surrounding countryside, is scheduled for Jan. 4-14, 2024, program director Sophfronia Scott announced this week. In Venice, Scott said, graduate student writers of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction will learn what it means for their work to be influenced by a setting.

“I think writing about a place, which is something almost every writer does, is about more than just describing the setting,” said Scott, an award-winning author and essayist. “In order to truly write well about a place, you have to feel it. It has to get inside you. Writers tend to arrive to a point in their development where a place calls them — and not just for research, but to feel influenced by this place.

“It can take a writer to another level. So, while students in this program may not choose to write about Venice specifically, they will learn what that idea means to them, and how they can tap into that experience when they write about places.”

Venice is one of the most perfectly preserved historic cities in Europe, with a sparkling literary reputation. Among the most famous works set in Venice are du Maurier’s “Don’t Look Now,” James’s “The Aspern Papers,” and William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice.” The city was extremely influential to the works of American author Ernest Hemingway and was considered his home away from home.

Students will be joined not only by Scott and the MFA program’s renowned faculty, but also by Janet Simmonds, a travel guide and art historian. They will stay at the five-star Villa Franceschi Hotel , a family-owned resort located on a waterway that flows out to the Venetian Lagoon.

“Wandering the alleys and streets of Venice is a feast for the senses,” Simmonds said. “Shouting porters, fresh-baked pizza, the salty air of the sea, jostling crowds at Rialto, the smell of fresh paint at the Biennale and more. Life is here being lived in Venice as it has been for centuries. I can’t wait for students to see it.”

The itinerary is intentionally being left flexible for now, but among the activities students can expect to take part in are hearing from Italian authors and publishers, exploring the islands surrounding Venice and visiting the small towns of Asolo, Padova and Trieste to understand how they have influenced other writers.

The deadline to register for the upcoming Winter 2023 residency, which takes place Jan. 3-13, 2023, at the Ralph A. MacMullan Center in Roscommon, Michigan, has been extended to Nov. 30. The Summer 2023 residency is scheduled to take place June 15-25 at Alma College.

Tentative plans are in place to hold a Summer 2025 residency at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, Scott said.

The Best 15 Creative Writing MFA Programs in 2023

April 7, 2023

mfa creative writing programs

Whether you studied at a top creative writing university , or are a high school dropout who will one day become a bestselling author , you may be considering an MFA in Creative Writing. But is a writing MFA genuinely worth the time and potential costs? How do you know which program will best nurture your writing? This article walks you through the considerations for an MFA program, as well as the best Creative Writing MFA programs in the United States.

First of all, what is an MFA?

A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is a graduate degree that usually takes from two to three years to complete. Applications require a sample portfolio for entry, usually of 10-20 pages of your best writing.

What actually goes on in a creative writing MFA beyond inspiring award-winning books and internet memes ? You enroll in workshops where you get feedback on your creative writing from your peers and a faculty member. You enroll in seminars where you get a foundation of theory and techniques. Then you finish the degree with a thesis project.

Reasons to Get an MFA in Creative Writing

You don’t need an MFA to be a writer. Just look at Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison or bestselling novelist Emily St. John Mandel.

Nonetheless, there are plenty of reasons you might still want to get a creative writing MFA. The first is, unfortunately, prestige. An MFA from a top program can help you stand out in a notoriously competitive industry to be published.

The second reason: time. Many MFA programs give you protected writing time, deadlines, and maybe even a (dainty) salary.

Third, an MFA in Creative Writing is a terminal degree. This means that this degree allows you to teach writing at the university level, especially after you publish a book.

But above all, the biggest reason to pursue an MFA is the community it brings you. You get to meet other writers, and share feedback, advice, and moral support, in relationships that can last for decades.

Types of Creative Writing MFA Programs

Here are the different types of programs to consider, depending on your needs:

Fully-Funded Full-Time Programs

These programs offer full-tuition scholarships and sweeten the deal by actually paying you to attend them.

  • Pros: You’re paid to write (and teach).
  • Cons: Uprooting your entire life to move somewhere possibly very cold.

Full-Time MFA Programs

These programs include attending in-person classes and paying tuition (though many offer need-based and merit scholarships).

  • Pros: Lots of top-notch programs non-funded programs have more assets to attract world-class faculty and guests.
  • Cons: It’s an investment that might not pay itself back.

Low-Residency MFA Programs

Low-residency programs usually meet biannually for short sessions. They also offer one-on-one support throughout the year. These MFAs are more independent, preparing you for what the writing life is actually like.

  • Pros: No major life changes required. Cons: Less time dedicated to writing and less time to build relationships.

Online MFA Programs

Held 100% online. These programs have high acceptance rates and no residency requirement. That means zero travel or moving expenses.

  • Pros: No major life changes required.
  • Cons: These MFAs have less name-recognition

Editor’s Top Selections – Best Creative Writing MFA Programs

Editors Choice Best Master of Fine Arts Badge

Once few and far between, master’s degrees aimed specifically at teaching creative writing have ballooned to meet demand in recent years. As of 2022, there were more than 300 of them.

Each MFA offers a distinctive experience and comes with its own theories and techniques for fanning the creative spark in students.

  • Some come with exquisite and carefully curated libraries exhibiting the finest selection of literature for study.
  • Others offer a fully-funded education , covering tuition and offering a stipend to give you the free time you need to write to your fullest potential.
  • Many have well-known authors serving as guest lecturers or even permanent presenters, offering a kind of access to genius you can’t find anywhere else.

It’s nice to have choices, but having choices also means making hard decisions. We’re here to help take some of the pain out of that process by presenting our own select choices for the very best universities offering MFA Creative Writing programs today.

How We Made Our Selections for the Finest Creative Writing MFA Programs

Schools that only teach creative writing at the master’s level have made a conscious choice to focus on a high level of training in the craft of writing. It’s completely appropriate to hold them to high standards.

It’s notoriously difficult to weigh any kind of artistic education program against another, however. Every writer is different. The process and program that you will get the most out of may be completely different from what the next author would benefit from.

So we look at the kinds of factors these degrees deliver that don’t revolve around process. Regardless of how an advanced level of creative writing is being taught, there are just some things that offer a better education no matter how they are applied. In our view, those include:

Top-notch Instructors With Genuine Writing and Publication Expertise

There’s no substitute for professors who have been there and done that in creative writing. Competition for top writers to teach at creative writing MFA programs is intense, and for good reason: when you are trying to master the muse, you want to hear about it from someone who already has.

But literary success is no guarantor of teaching ability. You wouldn’t want to be in a class taught by brilliant sci-fi author Harlan Ellison, for example, who has a whole section on his Wikipedia entry titled “Temperament.” Mentoring and the gentle art of delivering critical feedback to boost and not hinder students are key skills.

So, the best MFA in creative writing degrees employ professors with the rare combination of literary and academic talent—which is what you will find at each of the schools on this list.

The Resources To Support Your Writing Vision

Writers only float in a sea of ideas. The top MFA programs in creative writing have the resources to fill that ocean:

  • Expansive libraries for conducting research
  • Endowments to help fund student fellowships
  • Visiting writer and other lecture and reading series to develop broad visions and connections
  • School-run or affiliated literary journals or publishers to open up publication opportunities
  • International or other off-campus programs to broaden your literary experiences
  • Calm and inspiring writing residency options to put you in the right frame of mind to write
  • Small class sizes and workshops to foster intimacy and feedback

Although not all these programs will check every one of those boxes, each of them has a wealth of different resources to offer to help get students off the ground in both their creative exercises and their publishing careers.

A Track Record of Educational Success in Creative Writing

Most MFA programs are quick to acknowledge that you can’t teach talent—but you can foster and hone it.

That leads to demonstrable results in the form of graduates who have attracted top-dollar publishing deals, industry awards and recognition, and who have gone on to critical acclaim or even become instructors themselves.

This kind of reputation is golden in the literary world and all of these schools will have people sitting up and taking note when their name pops up in your author bio.

Strong Publishing Industry and Literary Community Connections

When you produce successful writers and hire well-known authors to instruct classes, important industry connections are an asset included in the deal. Those industry ties prove to be among the most important characteristics of the best creative writing MFA programs.

Each of these programs has developed connections to major publishers, agencies, and trade groups that help lay the groundwork for you to launch your writing career. There is fierce competition to land book deals in the publishing industry today. Every editor receives stacks and stacks of submissions and query letters; even the best authors have trouble making it out of the slush piles without a recommendation or introduction.

These schools have the kind of connections that will help get you introduced to decision-makers in big agencies and book publishers. Who you know still isn’t as important as how good your writing is, but with these programs, you’ll get the best of both worlds.

Diverse and Original Coursework in Foundational and Advanced Writing Skills

A Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing puts a clear stamp on your work. It’s designed to get the best out of your native skill and polish it to the finest shine.

That means both ironing out the fundamentals of the writing craft and developing new and advanced skills. All of these degrees have a wide range of courses and workshops that offer a deep background in the knowledge and skills required for solid plotting, character development, and essential technical expertise as a writer. But they also go far beyond those to help you seek new sources of inspiration and experience. Exploring the poetry of science fiction; diving into post-apocalyptic writing; focusing on the art of telling a joke; comparing Western and Eastern literary forms and storytelling… all these kinds of classes and more offer you an edge in taking your writing to the next level with a degree from these schools.

Helping You Choose From Among the Finest Creative Writing MFA Programs in the Nation

All those features are what make these programs the best. But the real question you need to answer is which one will actually be the best for you ?

We can help you figure that out, too. Although each of these schools comes in on top of the pack of master’s-level creative writing programs in the country in general, each also has unique features that will determine how they fit in with your personal goals and style.

So for each listing, we give you plenty of additional information to help you make your decision. That includes data on:

You’ll also get a thumbnail sketch of what makes the school a great one, outlining many of the supporting facts behind the criteria we evaluated them on. But you’ll also get some of the highlights, the things that really make them stand out, such as:

  • Whether the school also offers undergraduate and doctoral degrees
  • Which concentration or specializations are offered
  • The formats in which the program is available
  • Whether the school is public or private
  • Rankings by respected third-party evaluators like The Princeton Review
  • Exemplary student-published literary magazines
  • Super low student-to-faculty ratios
  • Unique workshops or internship opportunities offered

It’s easy access to the kind of information that will help make your decision easy… all in one place.

Best MFA Creative Writing Programs

Creative writing is a career chased by those who have a passion and talent for writing. Whether your medium is fictional stories, poetry, screenwriting, or non-fictional stories, creative writing allows you to express yourself through your work. If you think this is what you want to do with your life, you should pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.

Entertainment is one of the most commonly overlooked necessities in life. Everyone you speak to throughout your day will be looking forward to some form of entertainment. Most often, people go home at night to watch movies, TV shows, or read books. As a creative writer, you could help provide a steady stream of entertainment, making your job surprisingly vital to society. For anyone wanting a creative job, creative writing is a fantastic option.

Find your bootcamp match

Before we get to the best MFA in Creative Writing programs, let’s explore the difference between an MFA and Master’s Degree in Creative Writing.

MFA vs Master’s in Creative Writing

Chances are you have already completed an undergraduate degree in creative writing or a similar field. Assuming this is the case, you’re likely trying to decide your next step. With the two most common paths at this point being so similar, choosing MFA or a master’s degree can be a difficult decision. So what sets them apart and which one should you choose?

An MFA is often considered to be the highest-level academic degree you can earn for certain fine arts specializations, including creative writing. In a master’s of fine arts program , there is more of a focus on writing and preparing you to become a writer. It does require more credit hours than a master’s degree program, but if you want to be a writer, this path gives you the best education and preparation.

A Master’s Degree in Creative Writing, on the other hand, most often allows for a concentration in creative writing instead of a specialization. With a master’s degree, you would receive an education more focused on analyzing and studying literature rather than writing and composing. While a master’s degree is the quicker option, due to fewer required credit hours, it may not be the best if you plan to become a writer.

In either degree program, there are options for concentrations within creative writing. The most common are fiction, literary nonfiction, poetry, genre fiction, and at some schools, screenwriting. These are pretty self-explanatory; fiction focuses on writing fictional works, nonfiction focuses on nonfictional writing, poetry focuses on writing poems, genre fiction allows you to focus on one genre of fiction like romance or horror, and screenwriting focuses on writing scripts for movies, plays, and TV shows.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing is a terminal, two-year postgraduate degree that focuses on the art and practice of writing. At Arcadia, you choose between programs in fiction or poetry, and graduate with a completed manuscript of publishable quality, written under the guidance of the department’s award winning, diverse faculty.

Arcadia University’s low-residency MFA is distinctive in that it incorporates both a dynamic and flexible online learning environment, as well as a study abroad experience. You take between six and nine credits each term, and meet in person for a week-long residency at three different times during the course of study. Asynchronous workshops are conducted online every week during the fall and spring semesters, and are accessible at any time, through all platforms, allowing for a truly portable and flexible classroom. Our low-residency program allows you to tailor your own academic schedule in order to maintain a full-time professional life outside of school.

Studying Creative Writing, you can expect:

  • Visiting Writers:  Visiting writers work with MFA students at each residency to discuss both craft and business issues in the writing world.
  • One-On-One Practicums: Each semester students participate in a series of one-on-one meetings with an instructor to review, edit, and discuss writing in detail.
  • Residencies & Study Abroad:  Arcadia’s MFA offers three, one week long residencies.  Arcadia believes a global perspective is an important facet of writing, so one residency takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland. Our residencies allow students to workshop writing with peers, faculty, and visiting writers.
  • Marathon Literary Review: A literary journal established by the first class of Arcadia University’s MFA in Creative Writing. Its editorial staff is made up entirely of MFA students, and they create a publication that showcases the current voices and emerging talent of writers, poets, photographers, and other artists.
  • Partial Funding Available: Funding packages ranging up to $4,000 are available. At least four TA positions per cohort will be offered; in order to be considered, you must apply by the priority deadline.

Experiential Learning

“I liked the flexibility of a low-residency MFA program, an increased ability to work during the program to make it a more financially feasible decision, and, of course, the Edinburgh residency.”

Writing: In addition to seeking publication for your own creative work, with your MFA in Creative Writing you can write for magazines, newspapers, companies, and organizations. This includes business, marketing, professional, technical, pharmaceutical and medical writing. Full-time, part-time and freelance opportunities are available.

Forest Grove, Hillsboro & Eugene Campuses Closed

Update: Pacific University’s Forest Grove, Hillsboro and Eugene campuses, and all Pacific healthcare clinics, remain closed all day Friday, Jan. 19. More Details

What is a Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing?

The exterior of the downtown Portland MFA building with a sign that reads Master of Fine Arts in Writing.

A degree in creative writing can provide unparalleled opportunities for personal growth and creative expression. Pacific’s unique low-residency master’s program enables authors to sharpen their skills and form a close-knit community of authors from anywhere in the world.

Earn your MFA in creative writing and begin a lifetime of making thoughtful, compassionate art. Applications for Pacific’s innovative low-residency program are being accepted until May 15 and financial aid is available .

Creative writing MFA programs are unparalleled spaces for writers to explore and grow.

However, traditional masters in creative writing degrees can take between two and three years for full-time students to complete, leaving little in the way of career or family flexibility.

Enter the Low-Residency MFA .

Combining the essential tenets of the best MFA programs — one-on-one instruction , close-knit cohorts , inspiring faculty — with the versatility of a hybrid model, low-residency MFAs don’t force you to choose between school and life .

An MFA degree can push you to create innovative, compassionate writing projects, which can be more accessible and adaptable with low-residency programs.

Discover the unique benefits of a low-residency MFA program and how it might be the perfect space to hone your craft.

EXPLORE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

What is a Low-Residency MFA Program?

Unlike most graduate degree programs, the low-residency MFA primarily takes place outside of the classroom.

This allows you to refine your writing process from anywhere in the world while still communicating frequently with your peers and professors.

Low-residency creative writing degrees blend independent, guided study with several in-person residencies that include workshops, lectures, and individual meetings with faculty.

Low-residency MFA degrees are designed to empower those who may not have the time to devote to regular class sessions or who may live far from universities offering writing programs.

However, anyone, regardless of circumstance, can take advantage of low-residency writing programs, as they provide the same high-quality practicum and faculty insight as comparable traditional degree pathways.

Whether writing from your dining room table, a local coffee shop, or a tropical beach, a low-residency degree in creative writing offers unrivaled support.

Do Low-Residency MFA Programs Offer Scholarships?

Scholarships for low-residency writing degrees are available, as well as paid opportunities to teach creative writing at the university level.

Pacific offers five distinct merit-based scholarships for MFA cohort members, each of which lowers the cost for creative writing students.

In addition to the writing MFA program’s specific scholarships, Pacific offers general scholarships to graduate students of all disciplines , further reducing the cost of your degree.

Is a Bachelor's Degree in Writing Required to Apply to a Low-Residency MFA Program?

Thoughtful creative writing can come from any background, so a bachelor’s degree in creative writing is generally not required to apply for low-residency MFA programs.

While many programs require an undergraduate degree, at Pacific your previous college experience doesn’t need to be related to creative writing as a discipline.

Rather, your writing skill and promise comes through in the portfolio of work and the critical essay that you submit alongside your application.

Are Low-Residency MFA Programs Taught Online?

A selection of books published by Pacific University MFA faculty sit facing out on a shelf.

Online MFA programs are becoming more common, especially as the number of schools offering writing degrees continues to increase.

Low-residency MFA programs are not online programs, rather a portion of the instruction is mentor-guided remotely and then augmented with on-site residencies. There are no asynchronous courses or class meetings.

Despite having a significant in-person component, low-residency MFA degrees retain the most sought-after aspects of the best online MFA programs: adaptability.

The constraints that can accompany traditional MFA programs are absent in the low-residency model, enabling your writing practice to mold to your schedule, not the other way around.

What Do the Best Low-Residency MFA Programs Look Like?

A master’s in creative writing fuses a daily writing practice with intense, careful study of literature and craft guided by celebrated authors in your chosen genre.

What should you look for to help make the most of that experience?

The best low-residency MFA programs include:

Faculty experts. Award-winning authors form the backbone of the instructional core of any reputable MFA program, and you’ll be working with them closely throughout your degree.

It’s important to search for professors who are not only experts in their craft, but who can speak about the broader publishing space to interested authors.

Demonstrated student success. Whether as educators, community organizers, or published authors, examples of students finding success beyond their MFA program is paramount.

Interdisciplinary opportunities. Learning from other genres and styles of writing is integral in forming creative work, and being a part of a diverse array of professors and peers can help supercharge that process.

Supportive workshops . Feedback is essential to flourishing as an author, and surrounding yourself with a compassionate cohort will help create an environment of growth.

Rewarding residencies. Low-residency writing master’s degrees are unique in that they allow for on-site residencies that include lectures, workshops, and opportunities for connection with faculty and colleagues.

Pacific’s unique low-residency MFA has admissions windows twice a year, so there’s no wrong time to get your application started .

Will I get caught if I buy an essay?

The most popular question from clients and people on the forums is how not to get caught up in the fact that you bought an essay, and did not write it yourself. Students are very afraid that they will be exposed and expelled from the university or they will simply lose their money, because they will have to redo the work themselves.

If you've chosen a good online research and essay writing service, then you don't have to worry. The writers from the firm conduct their own exploratory research, add scientific facts and back it up with the personal knowledge. None of them copy information from the Internet or steal ready-made articles. Even if this is not enough for the client, he can personally go to the anti-plagiarism website and check the finished document. Of course, the staff of the sites themselves carry out such checks, but no one can forbid you to make sure of the uniqueness of the article for yourself.
