Mrs. Saroj Joshi is incharge of our class. She is tall, slim and smart. She is very fare, with an attractive personality and long hair. She must be around 35 years old. She is soft-spoken but very strict as well. She never tolerates indiscipline and is never partial to anyone. She teaches us Sanskrit. She has perfect command over the language. She makes the subject very interesting and teaches grammar very keenly. She explains the lessons with the help of a number of examples so as to make them clear and easy to understand. A teacher is one who instills in the learner an inspiration to learn and to be good. With this message, I want to start an essay on my favorite Teacher. I am a student of XII class in a  private school which is a well-known school in the city. It is a reputed school with over 1,700 students. There are about 40 teachers in our school. Among all the teachers who taught us Mr. Anurag is my favorite teacher. He taught us history.

Personality of My Teacher

Mr. Anurag is about 34 years of age, tall, smart and has a tough look. He also knows karate. He believes in high thinking and simple living and thus, always wears simple clothes and looks so sober. His manners are pleasing and liked by all. He is also an experienced English teacher.

He has masters or postgraduate degrees both in History and English. Also, he is very soft-spoken and yet strict in discipline. The best part of him is that he doesn’t believe in physical punishment. I have never seen him giving any kind of punishment to anyone. Rather disciplined is maintained nicely in his class. He has some positive influence on us.

He has perfect command over History and English. His knowledge of Indian history and English literature is very good. His pronunciation is perfect, accurate and very clear. I feel fortunate to be his student and so other students also feel the same. He looks upon us as his own sons and takes a lot of interest in solving our school and personal problems.

He is also the principal advisor of our school drama club and also prepares students for English debate and elocution contests. Under his guidance, many students have won a number of prizes and trophies in such competitions. We have become 3 times consecutive champions in debate under his guidance. He is an asset to the school and student community.

Why is He My Favorite Teacher?

His voice makes it an excellent experience to have history lessons from him. It feels that we are in that era of history. It’s like watching a video while listening to him. He has also traveled at a lot of historic places and makes good use of them as an example to make teaching and learning effective and memorable.

His talks are interesting, educative and full of literary references. He is serious and sober and yet he is a man with a great sense of humor. Even some teachers feel envious of him and his popularity among students.

Once, we went to visit the Nizam palace and Qutub shahi tombs in Hyderabad. We were surprised to know his vast and authentic knowledge about the palace and tombs. He explained so many things about the palace and the generations in detail. The visit became so memorable only with Complete knowledge of the place because of him. His vast general knowledge shows his deep interest and devotion to books. Reading is his only hobby.

Qualities of My Teacher

He often tells us that honesty and a heart-to-heart talk is the best way to strengthen a relationship. Sometimes I fail to hand in my homework on time, but he is happy when I tell him the truth – in other words, I have to be honest with him. He doesn’t set too many rules and allows students to think for themselves. He is a very good person and teacher and that’s why he is my best teacher .

History comes alive in his class. When he takes classes there is absolute silence in class and everyone focusses on the topic that he discusses. He has the capability to draw out attention to the subject and also to sustain it.

Also, he shows us various historical videos and pictures from the internet in the class and describes them thus making it much easier for us to understand what he teaches. He does not just read from the book but gives us a concrete picture of everything, so that we see them before us.

I am sure that, even after some years when I leave this school I will take his portrait fitted into the depths of my mind and heart. His picture is so deeply entrenched in my heart and head that, I think no matter, where I go, I will never forget his idealism and  I will never get another like him to see and meet.

For me, my class teacher, Mrs Diksha Gandhi, is an ideal teacher. She teaches us history and social science. She has a master’s degree in history and is a knowledgeable person. If we don’t understand a topic, Mrs Gandhi explains it creatively and makes sure we get it correctly.

She is very approachable and students often visit her during the break to clear their doubts. Even though she is strict and doesn’t like us missing her classes, she is also very kind and helps us understand the lessons we missed. If we perform poorly in exams, she doesn’t scold us. Instead, she guides us and motivates us to work harder and do well in the future. 

Mrs Gandhi loves to teach and share her knowledge with others. Every Sunday, she goes to teach the children living in slums. She often tells us that the most important thing in life is to become a good human being. We all look up to her and aspire to become like her. In the future, no matter where I am in my life, I will always apply her teachings and the things I have learned from her. She will always be my favourite and ideal teacher.

Introduction

Every child loves his class because there are many memories they have in each class. Apart from some memorable days, some decent things make my class the best one. Every year we change our class still each and every class seems the best to me this shows that my school is also the best one.

My Decent Classroom

I am Riddhi of class 3 A, my class is just beside the basketball court. From one side we enjoy a live basketball match whereas at the same time we can also enjoy the shade of a mango tree.

The perfect location of my class makes it decent and also encourages me to stay in my class.

We always watch students practicing on the basketball court and it really inspires us, because they practice so hard and for so long hours. I have seen many students who were unable to do a goal but their practice made them state level players.

Apart from the basketball court we also love playing with the leaves of the mango tree. Generally, we have to climb up a tree to reach its top, but the top portion of the tree can be easily touched from our classroom window. Apart from studies and friends, these things make my class decent and I love to be there.

There are different reasons to love something and the above reasons that help me to love my class. A classroom is a place where we learn and when we love being their then education seems interesting. I love my class, my teachers as well as my friends.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – Why is My Class Different

A room where I am with 30 more students, space were my teachers come to teach me, and a place where I perform all kinds of notorious task. I call it my classroom, a place where I learn addition and subtraction and the difference between smiling and laughing in the presence of my teacher. My classroom is one of the best classes in my school due to many reasons.

What Makes my Class Different?

There are many things that make us different from others similarly there are many things that make our class different. I have discussed the points below;

Types of Students in My Class

• Every class has a topper and a failure but my class topper is a school topper and because of this our class is always famous in my school. Apart from this, there is no student who used to fail or use to be promoted in my class.
• In my class, there are two singers and they always secure the first two ranks in any singing competition held at my school. They are really very good singers and we love listening to them.
• There is also a group of six girls who are famous for dancing, and they always perform on special occasions. Really 6B is a famous class for all types of activities. They also take part in the school choir group and also represent our school in different competitions.
• There is a national level badminton player in the under 16 groups, he always makes us feel proud. He is an inspiration not only for the students of the primary section but also for the secondary wing.
• A combination of such types of students makes us feel superior and we feel special. Everyone knows us that we are from that unique class in which each and every student is special.
• My class teacher is another reason for loving my class; she is so polite and always inspires us to take part in several activities. She is our class teacher so whenever we have to go for practice, she allows us and takes our extra class in our free period and in this way, it becomes easy for us to concentrate on our studies.

It is always recommended to have good friends but when you have an artistic class then how can you stay behind from learning from them. Our principal and other teachers also admire them and our class is really one of the best in our school.

Learning is an important pillar of our life and we love to be its part. It helps us to have a better life and become successful in our life. Whatever subject you may like but you have to learn. Suppose a child loves maths and he decided to read-only maths but is it really possible. You also have to read English to understand what is written. This shows that learning all the subjects are necessary and once you get the basic knowledge then you can choose as per your interest in higher classes.

We are Invited for Creativity

The very best part of my class is our teachers inspire us to think and develop our own ideas. There is a creative wall in my class and a student is free to post anything creative. It should not be copied from anywhere. This inspires us to utilize our studies and bring some creative ideas. And it looks so good to have you painting or any creative idea on the wall with your name in bold letters. I really love it.

Looks Decent

In my school, every class gets a theme, and students have to decorate their class as it is. So, our theme is ‘Space’. So, the whole class looks so good that I can’t express in words. We have decorated our beaches like space ships and really our class looks like a space centre. The class board is decorated in such a way that it looks like a window of a space ship.

An Achievement Wall

There is an achievement wall in our class where students’ pics are posted. Every week different competitions are organized in our house meetings and those who win; their pictures are posted on this wall. It inspires other students to perform well and get space on this wall. Whenever there is any kind of inspection in our school, various teachers and principal sir visit our class and they admire those students as well as this idea of the achievement wall.

Weekend Activities

All of us celebrate our weekend in different ways, sometimes we visit a place, and sometimes we simply stay at home. So, those who spend their weekend at a new place or do something new are invited to express their views in a free period. It helps us to know those new places to visit next time and really a very new concept which is only followed in our class.

Social Media Touch-up

My classroom activities are updated on social media by our class teachers and this inspires us to perform well. In this way, we are also connected with many other people and I really like this concept.

Learning should be fun and my class is the best example of this. We celebrate together learn together and also enjoy ourselves together. Others should also learn from our class and all the credit goes to my class teacher. She is so good that our class became our favorite spot. Everything in the class inspires us and I proudly say that; that is my class. My class has also won the best class prize this year and every day we develop new ideas to make it the best learning place. America’s public school teachers are far less racially and ethnically diverse than their students

Elementary and secondary public school teachers in the United States are considerably less racially and ethnically diverse as a group than their students – and while the share of Black, Hispanic and Asian American teachers has increased in recent decades, it has not kept pace with the rapid growth in the racial and ethnic diversity of their students, according to data from the  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES).

About eight-in-ten U.S. public school teachers (79%) identified as non-Hispanic White during the 2017-18 school year, the most recent year for which NCES has published demographic data about them. Fewer than one-in-ten teachers were either Black (7%), Hispanic (9%) or Asian American (2%). And fewer than 2% of teachers were either American Indian or Alaska Native, Pacific Islander, or of two or more races.

By comparison, 47% of all public elementary and secondary school students in the U.S. were White in 2018-19, according to the most recent data available. In that period, around a quarter of public school students were Hispanic (27%), 15% were Black and 5% were Asian. Those shares have increased over time as newer generations of young people entered the classroom. About 1% or fewer were Pacific Islander or identified as American Indian or Alaska Native, while 4% were of two or more races.

To assess the racial and ethnic differences in U.S. public elementary and secondary school teachers and the students they teach, this analysis uses federal data to study these two groups’ makeup and how they have changed over time.

The analysis draws on more than three decades of survey and demographic data from the National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES), including the National Teacher and Principal Survey (formerly called the Schools and Staffing Survey), the Public Elementary/Secondary School Universe Survey and the Education Demographic and Geographic Estimates (EDGE).

The analysis uses the most recent data available for U.S. teachers (the 2017-18 school year) and for students (the 2018-19 school year). Data was unavailable for some states due to low response rates or unmet data collection standards.

White, Black, Asian American, Pacific Islander and American Indian or Alaska Natives in this analysis are those who report being one race and are not Hispanic. Hispanics are of any race. Due to methodological changes, earlier NCES data does not include a category for two or more races, and Asian Americans are grouped with Pacific Islanders.

Not only do White teachers sharply outnumber educators of other races and ethnicities, but they also tend to work in different school environments, the NCES data shows:

• In schools where students come from households with lower incomes, greater shares of teachers are Black or Hispanic than at schools where students are wealthier. One measure of this is the share of students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, often used as a proxy measure  for students in lower-income households. In schools where more than 75% of students qualify for the program, 17% of teachers are Hispanic, 14% are Black and 63% are White. At schools where 25% or fewer students qualify, 4% of teachers are Hispanic, 2% are Black and nine-in-ten are White.
• Hispanic, Black and Asian teachers also make up larger shares of the teaching force in city schools (14%, 12% and 3%, respectively) than in rural ones, where 4% are Hispanic or Black and fewer than 1% are Asian American. White teachers, on the other hand, make up 69% of urban school teachers and 90% of rural ones, reflecting the broader  racial and ethnic makeup of America’s communities .
• At schools with bigger percentages of racial or ethnic minority students, larger shares of teachers were Hispanic, Black or Asian American while the reverse was true for schools with more White students. In schools where at least 90% of students were minorities, the share of teachers who were Hispanic was 28%, while 20% of teachers were Black, 5% were Asian and 43% were White. Across schools where at least 90% of students were White, nearly all teachers (97%) also were White. This is similar to the experience for students: Many students go to schools where at least half of their peers are of the same race or ethnicity .

Changes over time

The share of White teachers has decreased about 8 percentage points since the 1987-88 school year (the earliest period with comparable data), when about 87% of teachers were White. Both the number and share of Hispanic and Asian teachers grew during that time span. While the number of Black teachers also has increased since the late ’80s, they have declined as a share of teachers overall.

In the last 30 years, Hispanic teachers have overtaken Black educators as the second-largest racial or ethnic group among U.S. public school teachers. In 1987-88, there were almost three times as many Black public school teachers (191,000) as Hispanic ones (69,000). Since then, the number of Hispanic teachers increased nearly fivefold to 331,000, while the number of Black teachers increased by 25%, to 239,000.

The share of Asian public school teachers has also grown steadily. Between 1987-88 and 2017-18, the number of Asian teachers more than tripled, from 21,000 to 75,000. This happened during a time span (2000 to 2019) when Asian and Hispanic populations in the U.S. were the  fastest-growing racial or ethnic groups . 

Meanwhile, the pattern in racial and ethnic diversity among school principals is similar to that of teachers. In 2017-18, around eight-in-ten principals (78%) were White, compared with 11% who were Black, 9% who were Hispanic and 1% who were Asian American. This represents an increase since 1987-88, when Black, Hispanic and Asian or Pacific Islander principals accounted for 9%, 3% and less than 1% of principals, respectively.

During the same time span, growth in racial and ethnic diversity was much faster among U.S. students than among both teachers and principals. During the 1987-88 school year, 71% of American elementary and secondary school students were White, 14% were Black, 11% were Hispanic and 3% were Asian or Pacific Islander (the two categories were grouped together that year). By the 2018-19 school year, White children made up fewer than half of students (47%). Hispanic students accounted for the second-largest share at 27%, while 15% were Black, 5% were Asian American and 4% identified as multiracial. 

It’s worth pointing out that U.S. public school teachers look different from students not just in terms of race and ethnicity, but also in terms of gender. The most recent data shows that roughly three-quarters of all elementary and secondary school teachers were women, while students are nearly evenly split between boys and girls.

Geographic differences

The racial and ethnic makeup of teachers varies somewhat by state, but there is no state where teachers are less likely to be White than their students, according to separate NCES data for the 2017-18 school year (again, the only recent year where data for both groups was available).

Nationally, state public school teachers are on average 27 percentage points more likely to be White than their students. In Nevada, 77% of public school teachers are White but only one-third of public school students are – a 45-point difference and the widest gap of any state. In all, White teachers make up 79% of the nation’s public school teachers and they account for that share or greater of educators in 37 states. (There is no 2017-18 NCES data available for Maryland or the District of Columbia.)

The only state where White teachers are not the largest racial or ethnic group is Hawaii, where Asian teachers are 42% of the teaching force. White teachers account for about a quarter, and Native Hawaiians or Pacific Islanders comprise 10%.

In New Mexico, 36% of teachers are Hispanic – the largest share in any state. And the largest share of Black teachers is in Georgia, where a quarter of the teaching force is Black.

Get tech out of the classroom before it’s too late.

Jaime Lewis noticed that her eighth-grade son’s grades were slipping several months ago. She suspected it was because he was watching YouTube during class on his school-issued laptop, and her suspicions were validated. “I heard this from two of his teachers and confirmed with my son: Yes, he watches YouTube during class, and no, he doesn’t think he can stop. In fact, he opted out of retaking a math test he’d failed, just so he could watch YouTube,” she said.

She decided to do something about it. Lewis told me that she got together with other parents who were concerned about the unfettered use of school-sanctioned technology in San Luis Coastal Unified School District, their district in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Because they knew that it wasn’t realistic to ask for the removal of the laptops entirely, they went for what they saw as an achievable win: blocking YouTube from students’ devices. A few weeks ago, they had a meeting with the district superintendent and several other administrators, including the tech director.

To bolster their case, Lewis and her allies put together a video compilation of clips that elementary and middle school children had gotten past the district’s content filters.

Their video opens on images of nooses being fitted around the necks of the terrified women in the TV adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It ends with the notoriously violent “Singin’ in the Rain” sequence from “A Clockwork Orange.” (Several versions of this scene are available on YouTube. The one she pointed me to included “rape scene” in the title.) Their video was part of a PowerPoint presentation filled with statements from other parents and school staff members, including one from a middle school assistant principal, who said, “I don’t know how often teachers are using YouTube in their curriculum.”

That acknowledgment gets to the heart of the problem with screens in schools. I heard from many parents who said that even when they asked district leaders how much time kids were spending on their screens, they couldn’t get straight answers; no one seemed to know, and no one seemed to be keeping track.

Eric Prater, the superintendent of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, told me that he didn’t realize how much was getting through the schools’ content filters until Lewis and her fellow parents raised concerns. “Our tech department, as I found out from the meeting, spends quite a lot of time blocking certain websites,” he said. “It’s a quite time-consuming situation that I personally was not aware of.” He added that he’s grateful this was brought to his attention.

I don’t think educators are the bad guys here. Neither does Lewis. In general, educators want the best for students. The bad guys, as I see it, are tech companies.

One way or another, we’ve allowed Big Tech’s tentacles into absolutely every aspect of our children’s education, with very little oversight and no real proof that their devices or programs improve educational outcomes. Last year Collin Binkley at The Associated Press analyzed public records and found that “many of the largest school systems spent tens of millions of dollars in pandemic money on software and services from tech companies, including licenses for apps, games and tutoring websites.” However, he continued, schools “have little or no evidence the programs helped students.”

It’s not just waste, very likely, of taxpayer money that’s at issue. After reading many of the over 900 responses from parents and educators to my questionnaire about tech in schools and from the many conversations I had over the past few weeks with readers, I’m convinced that the downsides of tech in schools far outweigh the benefits.

Though tech’s incursion into America’s public schools — particularly our overreliance on devices — hyperaccelerated in 2020, it started well before the Covid-19 pandemic. Google, which provides the operating system for lower-cost Chromebooks and is owned by the same parent company as YouTube, is a big player in the school laptop space, though I also heard from many parents and teachers whose schools supply students with other types and brands of devices.

As my newsroom colleague Natasha Singer reported in 2017 (by which point “half the nation’s primary- and secondary-school students” were, according to Google, using its education apps), “Google makes $30 per device by selling management services for the millions of Chromebooks that ship to schools. But by habituating students to its offerings at a young age, Google obtains something much more valuable”: potential lifetime customers.

The issue goes beyond access to age-inappropriate clips or general distraction during school hours. Several parents related stories of even kindergartners reading almost exclusively on iPads because their school districts had phased out hard-copy books and writing materials after shifting to digital-only curriculums. There’s evidence that this is harmful: A 2019 analysis of the literature concluded that “readers may be more efficient and aware of their performance when reading from paper compared to screens.”

“It seems to be a constant battle between fighting for the students’ active attention (because their brains are now hard-wired for the instant gratification of TikTok and YouTube videos) and making sure they aren’t going to sites outside of the dozens they should be,” Nicole Post, who teaches at a public elementary school in Missouri, wrote to me. “It took months for students to listen to me tell a story or engage in a read-aloud. I’m distressed at the level of technology we’ve socialized them to believe is normal. I would give anything for a math or social studies textbook.”

I’ve heard about kids disregarding teachers who tried to limit tech use, fine motor skills atrophying because students rarely used pencils and children whose learning was ultimately stymied by the tech that initially helped them — for example, students learning English as a second language becoming too reliant on translation apps rather than becoming fluent.

Some teachers said they have programs that block certain sites and games, but those programs can be cumbersome. Some said they have software, like GoGuardian, that allows them to see the screens of all the students in their classes at once. But classroom time is zero sum: Teachers are either teaching or acting like prison wardens; they can’t do both at the same time.

Resources are finite. Software costs money . Replacing defunct or outdated laptops costs money . When it comes to I.T., many schools are understaffed . More of the money being spent on tech and the maintenance and training around the use of that tech could be spent on other things, like actual books. And badly monitored and used tech has the most potential for harm.

I’ve considered the counterarguments: Kids who’d be distracted by tech would find something else to distract them; K-12 students need to gain familiarity with tech to instill some vague work force readiness.

But on the first point, I think other forms of distraction — like talking to friends, doodling and daydreaming — are better than playing video games or watching YouTube because they at least involve children engaging with other children or their own minds. And there’s research that suggests laptops are uniquely distracting . One 2013 study found that even being next to a student who is multitasking on a computer can hurt a student’s test scores.

On the second point, you can have designated classes to teach children how to keyboard, code or use software that don’t require them to have laptops in their hands throughout the school day. And considering that various tech companies are developing artificial intelligence that, we’re meant to understand, will upend work as we know it , whatever tech skills we’re currently teaching will probably be obsolete by the time students enter the work force anyway. By then, it’ll be too late to claw back the brain space of our nation’s children that we’ve already ceded. And for what? So today’s grade schoolers can be really, really good at making PowerPoint presentations like the ones they might one day make as white-collar adults?

That’s the part that I can’t shake: We’ve let tech companies and their products set the terms of the argument about what education should be, and too many people, myself included, didn’t initially realize it. Companies never had to prove that devices or software, broadly speaking, helped students learn before those devices had wormed their way into America’s public schools. And now the onus is on parents to marshal arguments about the detriments of tech in schools.

Holly Coleman, a parent of two who lives in Kansas and is a substitute teacher in her district, describes what students are losing:

They can type quickly but struggle to write legibly. They can find info about any topic on the internet but can’t discuss that topic using recall, creativity or critical thinking. They can make a beautiful PowerPoint or Keynote in 20 minutes but can’t write a three-page paper or hand-make a poster board. Their textbooks are all online, which is great for the seams on their backpack, but tangible pages under your fingers literally connect you to the material you’re reading and learning. These kids do not know how to move through their day without a device in their hand and under their fingertips. They never even get the chance to disconnect from their tech and reconnect with one another through eye contact and conversation.

Jonathan Haidt’s new book, “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” prescribes phone-free schools as a way to remedy some of the challenges facing America’s children. I agree that there’s no place for smartphones on a K-12 campus. But if you take away the phones and the kids still have near-constant internet connectivity on devices they have with them in every class, the problem won’t go away.

When Covid hit and screens became the only way for millions of kids to “attend” school, not having a personal device became an equity issue. But we’re getting to a point where the opposite may be true. According to the responses to my questionnaire, during the remote-school era, private schools seemed to rely far less on screens than public schools, and many educators said that they deliberately chose lower-tech school environments for their own children — much the same way that some tech workers intentionally send their kids to screen-free schools.

We need to reframe the entire conversation around tech in schools because it’s far from clear that we’re getting the results we want as a society and because parents are in a defensive crouch, afraid to appear anti-progress or unwilling to prepare the next generation for the future. “I feel like a baby boomer attacking like this,” said Lewis.

But the drawbacks of constant screen time in schools go beyond data privacy, job security and whether a specific app increases math performance by a standard deviation. As Lewis put it, using tech in the classroom makes students “so passive, and it requires so little agency and initiative.” She added, “I’m very concerned about the species’ ability to survive and the ability to think critically and the importance of critical thinking outside of getting a job.”

If we don’t hit pause now and try to roll back some of the excesses, we’ll be doing our children — and society — a profound disservice.

The good news is that sometimes when the stakes become clear, educators respond: In May, Dr. Prater said, “we’re going to remove access to YouTube from our district devices for students.” He added that teachers will still be able to get access to YouTube if they want to show instructional videos. The district is also rethinking its phone policy to cut down on personal device use in the classroom. “For me,” he said, “it’s all about how do you find the common-sense approach, going forward, and match that up with good old-fashioned hands-on learning?” He knows technology can cause “a great deal of harm if we’re not careful.”

Say what you will about cellphones in classrooms, but a 38-second video taken in a classroom Monday at Parkland High School, while hard to watch, is nevertheless a must-see if you really care to know what we ask of teachers.

It opened with a student — a teenage boy — slapping a teacher who was seated in a chair in a corner of the classroom.

The teacher, whether shocked or preternaturally calm, responded by asking “You think that affected me …?”

If it did, the teacher didn’t show it. Not even after a second blow, an open-handed slap, sent glasses flying.

You think that affected me?

The teacher was calm.

The same can’t be said of the general public.

In the video, after the first slap, the violence escalated.

The student asked the teacher “Want me to hit you again?” a few times before the second blow connected.

The boy then turned and continued his tirade, launching a profanity while walking away. “Ain’t nobody coming … (you) just got slapped. Go back to teaching.”

In the background, other students acted like kids.

Shocked oohs and aahs could be heard.

One kid gasped “Oh my God.”

Someone gave a nervous laugh.

As soon as the video was shared on social media, a viral firestorm kicked up.

Officials with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools issued a statement saying that they were aware of the incident and looking into it.

Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough weighed in, too.

“This sheriff’s office is aware, and, like many of you, we have seen the video that has made its way around the community (Monday),” reads a written statement attributed to the sheriff. “Because it involves a juvenile, we have not and will not discuss the particulars of the incident, but we will work collaboratively with those parties involved to determine the best course of action.”

Kimbrough was not — and will not — be the only person to voice strong opinions or make decisions.

Slapping a teacher hard is assault.

Criminal charges were a foregone conclusion. Indeed, the boy was charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault Tuesday morning.

His case will remain in juvenile court, too. Defendants under 17 are only eligible to be treated as adults if they are charged with a felony.

As for school officials, though privacy laws preclude saying what decisions they reached, administrators have already worked through the available punishments — suspension, expulsion, etc. It’s reasonable to expect that it will be discussed at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education.

“This behavior will not be tolerated,” said Superintendent Tricia McManus. “At no time is it acceptable for students to put their hands on a teacher in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. My focus now is on making sure that our teacher is taken care of and has the support needed to navigate through the lasting effects of this incident.”

The optics matter to school officials as well.

Cheap political points

Beyond those initial official first-steps, no one should be shocked that politics has reared its head.

As the video went locally viral, the conservative Moms for Liberty group saw it as a chance to push its agenda by advertising a town hall that it’s billing as “Giving Parents a Voice” in the WSFC Parent Support group

That quickly drew a rebuke.

“I am not sure this is an appropriate opportunistic response,” wrote Lori Farrington, a member of that Facebook group. “The majority of the people in this post are responding in a very supportive manner to a public school teacher who was hurt, unjustly, by a malicious student. You’re pushing an extremist agenda for privatization of education, for profit.

“Slow your (roll.)”

The assault at Parkland Monday is not an isolated event. WS/FCS officials reported more than three dozen assaults on school personnel, not all of them serious, in a report required under state law.

Anyone care to wager how quickly — and how loudly — the crescendo for increasing the number of school vouchers will crank up?

Or when somebody trots out the tired notion of arming teachers?

It’s no surprise that the video was shared hundreds of times within a few hours.

Yes, the 38-second video is hard to watch. It offends and disturbs.

Avoiding it is not the way to go, though.

Not out of any lurid sense of morbid curiosity. Rather, to understand what we ask of classroom teachers.

We are asking educators to do more than teach. They need our support | Opinion

All children have the ability to learn. That is a fact. But, creating an environment where all children arrive at school each day ready to learn and equipped with the tools they need to be successful is about equity. Generational poverty plays a huge role in access to resources, and expecting schools to fill all the gaps on their own is a huge and impossible order.

The Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation has a focus on equity as part of our mission, and every program/initiative we undertake uses that lens. From providing winter coats to supporting our paraprofessionals on their journey to becoming teachers in the district, everything we do is about providing equitable access for all of our students. The foundation launched our partnership with DonorsChoose in 2014 as a way to provide innovative support to teachers. We wanted to alleviate teachers using their own money for classroom items and projects they couldn’t otherwise access. It has worked.

Since 2014, we’ve assisted in putting more than $11 million into our classrooms. DonorsChoose has evolved into not just providing creative project and classroom supplies, but with an eye towards students’ needs at home ― filling projects for food and shoes and hygiene items to name a few.

Mark Twain Elementary School is west of downtown OKC. With an enrollment of about 300 students, 73% are economically disadvantaged and 15% are homeless. Mark Twain Elementary School’s 2024 Site Teacher of the Year (also an OKCPS Teacher of the Year finalist) and fourth-grade teacher Jennifer Reyes-Garcia has taken advantage of the foundation’s partnership with DonorsChoose and the huge national network of citizen donors who support public education through DonorsChoose by posting projects for these personal items for her students and all fourth-graders at Mark Twain. Since February, projects have been funded for 500 food bags for students and Reyes-Garcia shared that they’ve just distributed their 100th pair of new shoes, a pair for every fourth-grade student in the school.

We live in a community with many generous people who do what they can to help those in need, yet there are still so many who don’t realize how many in our city are struggling. We live in the greatest country on the planet with so many resources at our disposal, yet we continue to have children who go to school hungry, with tattered shoes and without a warm winter coat. We are asking our teachers and educators to do so much more than teach.

Schools and the nonprofits who support them will not stop doing what we do for our kids. But, these overarching issues are big and taking a realistic view of what real and long-term improvements for families will do for students, our community and state is critical to our future. We can and must do better. It will take all of us working differently and working together. Let’s do this.

These Tennessean readers support allowing teachers to be armed in the classroom

Trust teachers with firearms; they’re already highly trained.

Have you heard or read the requirements currently being proposed to arm teachers and school officials ? It is a long list of requirements being imposed on educated people that we trust to teach the children of Tennessee. Things like training, a current gun carry permit, recommendations, background checks and the list goes on.

Compare that to anyone else not in the classroom. Just go to a gun show and buy one. Or just go to a retailer and buy one. I hear it's not a hassle at all. And when you get that gun just leave it in your car to be stolen with no accountability. You will get lots of sympathy for the break in. Or leave it in your nightstand, loaded and ready, for the little ones to find and play with the trigger.

I just don't get it. Sensible gun owner and carry requirements are being requested for teachers that have a college education. But anyone else can do as they please thanks to our GOP controlled state government. Just seems backwards and totally out of touch with reality.

We could fill an entire edition of the Tennessean with all the dumb things the Republicans in the state legislature have done in recent years, but I think the reaction to the latest is overdone.

The best thing about the bill to allow teachers to be armed is that almost no one will do it. Fortunately, the bill (which still has to pass the House), only allows and does not require teachers to be armed. It sets up a long, involved process before a teacher can carry a firearm into the classroom.

So, I predict that almost all teachers will not want to do it, usually for the reasons the opponents have brought up. Of the few who do, some will not successfully complete the requirements. Probably the few who do already have concealed carry permits. The bill requires approval at several levels, any one of which could prevent an individual teacher from completing the process.

So, I think the net result of this bill, assuming it actually makes it to enactment, will be negligible.

Opposition to arming teachers borders on hysteria 

I support Senate Bill 1325 . I have seen the debate and personally think most of the vocal opponents have seemingly never read the bill or are bordering on hysteria. I would rather see informed debate since this important issue actually has some practical matters to discuss.

Revision 7 specifies locations where firearms cannot be carried, including “auditoriums and stadiums where school events are taking place.” If this refers to school auditoriums or stadiums and not outside locations, I question the wisdom of this since this would enhance an enticing target for an assailant.

Also, transferring holstered pistols to a safe introduces potential for negligent discharges and undermines the secrecy this bill requires.

I would recommend teachers in class only use this bill to defend their classrooms. Other faculty and teachers without a present class could possibly offer flexibility in potential responses. The front office's staff would be crucial against intruders if it is the only official entrance and the windows and other doors are properly fortified.

Concealed vertical shoulder holsters would prevent the most common incidents involving staff's firearms. They are practical, safe, and discrete for carrying pistols all day. They are not removed to use the bathroom, and unlike horizontals, do not muzzle-sweep behind the wearer.

There are hundreds of schools that lack school resource officers (SROs) and something overlooked in The Covenant School shooting is the police response time was ten minutes. Ten minutes is an eternity in a defense situation and I do not consider willing defenselessness to be a virtue.

Ex-Indiana teacher accused of encouraging classmates to beat up 7-year-old with disabilities

A former teacher in Indiana is accused of orchestrating a “Fight Club” in which he allegedly encouraged classmates to beat up a 7-year-old student with disabilities and videotaping at least one assault, according to a lawsuit filed this week.

The 7-year-old boy's mother filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Marion County that also names Indiana Public Schools Superintendent Aleesia Johnson, George Washington Carver Montessori IPS School 87 Principal Mary Kapcoe and the child’s former teacher Julious Johnican.

Other defendants include the district, the district’s Board of School Commissioners, the school’s assistant principal, a substitute teacher and a behavioral consultant.

According to the lawsuit, weeks into the 2023-24 school year, the child, who is identified only as "O.D.," began complaining to his mother about being abused and harassed at school.

The suit alleges that Johnican orchestrated “a reprehensible ‘fight club’ type of discipline within his classroom over a span of three months in which he encouraged, instigated, and on at least one occasion recorded on his phone physical abuse of O.D. by other students.”

“In this horrifying setup, Johnican not only permitted but incited and facilitated other students to engage in acts of violence against seven-year-old O.D., which included at least three beatings and various forms of physical harm and bullying both for his own amusement or as a deeply disturbed disciplinary measure," the suit says.

Catherine Michael, an attorney representing the student’s family, said the teacher appeared to be using the fighting as “a disciplinary technique.”

“Instead of beating a child senselessly himself, at least according to what we have, he was allowing another child to do it,” Michael told NBC affiliate WTHR of Indianapolis .

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said that on Wednesday it opened an investigation into the allegations in the lawsuit at the request of the county’s prosecutor’s office.

The school district said in a statement that it took immediate actions once it learned of the allegations. It also said the teacher was initially suspended and then resigned on Nov. 2, before the district could begin termination proceedings.

“IPS does not tolerate the type of behavior alleged in the complaint and takes reports of potential abuse and neglect seriously,” the district's statement said. “When IPS learned of the teacher’s conduct, the Department of Child Services (DCS) was immediately notified, and the teacher was removed from the classroom and suspended. The teacher had no further contact with students and is no longer employed by IPS.”  

The district also said it was not made aware of the allegations the teacher encouraged fights until the parent emailed the principal on the evening of Oct. 30. But the principal did not see the email until the next morning and immediately contacted the Department of Child Services and the school system’s human resources personnel, the district said.

A spokesperson for the district said Thursday that Johnson, the superintendent, and the school principal would not comment on the allegations.

Attempts to reach Johnican, who is described as a first-year teacher in the district in the suit, were unsuccessful Thursday afternoon. Phone calls to numbers associated with his relatives were not answered.

The lawsuit alleges that the second grader was “thrown to the ground, struck, slapped, and hit in the head repeatedly" in at least three attacks.

Johnican, the suit says, held the child on two occasions while “allowing other students to punch, hit and kick him.”

The child’s mother had repeated meetings with Johnican to discuss her son’s allegations, but Johnican dismissed them and attributed the problem to the student’s behavioral issues and said the student was lying or mentally ill, the lawsuit says.

According to the lawsuit, on Sept. 22, the child’s mother told the vice principal of the allegations after she was called to the school because her son was hysterical and unable to calm down.

His mother went to the school that day and observed him in the classroom for 45 minutes. That day, her son again told her he was being abused in school, the suit says.

“O.D. informed his mother that in the teacher’s presence and by his direction that another student had slammed his head down on a desk, pulled him to the floor, and then hit him repeatedly in the head. He directly indicated this was being done at the instruction of his teacher Mr. Johnican,” the lawsuit said.

The child, according to the suit, began asking to avoid school, and his grades slipped.

On Nov. 1, his parents had a meeting with Johnican, who intended to show a video of his classroom’s environment but instead inadvertently began showing a video of the student being attacked, the suit says.

“When the parent attempted to grab the phone, he inadvertently turned up the volume where the parents could hear that it was him, the teacher, instigating and encouraging the beating of their disabled seven-year-old child,” according to the lawsuit.

“The distressing content of the video made by Johnican shows O.D. on the floor crying as he is repeatedly punched in the face and head by a peer who is sitting on top of him as he cries out and begs for the attack to cease," it says.

In an interview with the Department of Child Services, the student said that he was assaulted twice in October and that Johnican held him down in one instance while a first grader slapped his face, according to the suit. And in a second alleged incident, Johnican held his shoulders while another student punched him in the stomach and kicked him in his legs, the suit said.

Some of the claims in the lawsuit include negligent care and supervision; negligent hiring, retention and supervision; and intentional infliction of serious emotional distress.

The child is now homeschooled, he has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, and he is in therapy at least once a week, the lawsuit said.

The suit requests a jury trial and says damages will be determined at trial.
