It can be difficult to step back and consider your child objectively, but you need to do exactly that. Think about what your child’s teachers have said over time, particularly the ones who know them well.

Reread report cards and teacher comments. Think about consistent themes that emerge from the reports. Are there comments that teachers have consistently made about how your child learns and acts in school and in extracurricular activities? These comments will be helpful for the admissions committee. 

Consider also your own observations of your child as well as what you hope your child will get out of their private school experience.

Real children aren’t perfect, but they can still be great candidates to private schools. Describe your child accurately and openly. A full, real, and descriptive parent’s statement will show the admissions committee that you are being honest, and when they will read about the amazing sides of your child, they will be more likely to believe them.

If your child has had serious disciplinary actions or other issues in the past, describe them. Let the admissions officers know what happened and draw positive lessons from it. The school is looking for a real kid—not a perfect pupil.

Showing that your child and your family are capable of dealing with setbacks might be even more valuable than presenting a flawless picture. Of course, describe your child’s strengths and don't only feel the need to be negative—but everything you write should be truthful.

Also, helping the committee members understand your child with their strengths and challenges will help them make the best decision for everyone. Your child will be most successful if they attend the school that fits them best , and describing your child candidly will help the admissions committee decide if the school and your child are the best fit for one another. Children who succeed at their schools are happier and healthier and stand in better stead for college admissions.

Consider How Your Child Learns

The parent’s statement is a chance to describe how your child learns so that the admissions committee can decide if they are likely to benefit from being at the school. If your child has moderate to severe learning issues, reveal them. Many private schools grant students with learning issues  accommodations or changes in the curriculum, so that they can best demonstrate what they know.

Students with mild learning issues might be able to wait until they are admitted to the school to ask about the school’s accommodations policy, but students with more severe learning issues should ask about the school’s policies about helping them beforehand. You may also have to do some research into what kind of resources the school offers to help your child—before they attend the school. Being open and honest with the school will help you and your child find the school where they can be happy and successful.

How to Organize Your Letter

Parent statements for private schools are typically composed of three parts: description of your child, description of your family, and the alignment of your values with the school values. The first two or even all three may be blended together, as through descriptions of your child, the nature of your family and your values will come through.

Sometimes, school websites offer useful prompts to guide your letters, and if that is the case, you should definitely make use of them. Some of the frequent questions are:

• What do you hope for your child to accomplish with the help of our school?
• Has your child ever had any intellectual, emotional, or behavioral evaluations? If so, describe their contexts and results.
• In what situations does your child thrive? Describe your child as an individual, with their hopes, values, goals, aspirations, strengths, and weaknesses.
• Has your child been through any adversity? Describe the context and how they navigated it.
• What has your role been in your child's education?
• Does your child require any academic or other support or accommodations?

Ideally, your letter would respond to these questions as thoroughly, yet as succinctly as possible.

The simplest way to go about this is to choose three to five aspects of your child's personality that you would like to highlight and compose the statement around them. Include illustrative anecdotes that will also portray a little about your family life. If it comes naturally to you, feel free to make these funny or quirky, as you are ultimately trying to stand out from the rest of the applicants.

As mentioned, you should also make a point of familiarizing yourself with the school's values and objectives and show in your letter how connected these are to your family. The more natural this is the better. All in all, as long as you provide the admission officers with an honest snapshot of your family and your child's nature and potential, your letter will hold its ground.

An applicant shall submit to the head of  secondary school where a teacher shortage or vacancy (regular and/or natural) exists, application letter, with the Applicant Number indicated, supported by the following documents:

a.  CSC Form 212 Revised 2017 in two copies with the latest 2×2 ID picture ( DOWNLOAD: CSC Form 212 Revised 2017 )

b. Certified photocopy of PRC professional identification card or a PRC certification showing the teacher’s name, LET rating, and other information recorded in the PRC Office

c. Certified photocopy of ratings obtained in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)/Professional Board Examination for Teachers (PBET)

d. Certified copy of transcript of records

e. Copies of service records, performance rating, and school clearance for those with teaching experience. If unavailable, the applicant must submit a justification citing the reason/s for unavailability.

f. Certificates of specialized training, if any

g. Certified copy of the Voter’s ID and/or any proof of residency as deemed acceptable by the School Screening Committee

h. NBI Clearance

i. Omnibus certification of authenticity and veracity of all documents submitted, signed by the applicant

We would like to provide you with an important update regarding the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ® ) process. This Electronic Announcement provides further details regarding aid eligibility and the post-processing experience for students, institutions, state higher education agencies, and scholarship organizations.

Since the form went live on Dec. 30, more than 3.1 million forms have been submitted. The Department continues to work to ensure students and their families have access to a stable and secure form.

As part of our continuing commitment to put students first, we will ensure students and their families receive all the aid they are entitled to receive. To account for inflationary adjustments as required under the law, the Department has updated the supporting tables used in the Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation, ensuring that students are benefitting from approximately an additional $1.8 billion in aid. These tables, which directly impact eligibility for need-based federal student aid, detail the allowances against income and assets reported by students and families on their FAFSA form. The revised tables are included in the final Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide . In the coming weeks, our teams will be updating the Federal Processing System (FPS) to include the updated tables. Based upon estimations for completing that work, the Department will begin transmitting batches of FAFSA information (ISIRs) to schools and state agencies in the first half of March, which will include the updated SAI tables. We anticipate catching up with the majority of ISIR transmissions to schools in the weeks following the beginning of ISIR delivery.

We anticipate that the 2024-25 FAFSA processing timeline will change as follows.

Post-Processing Experience for Students

Students will receive an email informing them that their FAFSA form has been fully processed and their FAFSA information has been sent to the schools they listed on their form.

Students who applied using the online FAFSA form will receive an email that they can access their FAFSA Submission Summary by logging in to StudentAid.gov using their account username and password.

The Department will send an email reminder to previous FAFSA applicants who have not yet submitted a 2024-25 FAFSA form.

Students will be able to make corrections to their FAFSA once their eligibility has been calculated and ISIR generated. Students may view their eligibility calculation by logging back into their Studentaid.gov account.

The Department will fully process paper applications in the weeks following.

Post-Processing Experience for Institutions, State Higher Ed Agencies, and Designated Scholarship Organizations

Institutions, state higher ed agencies, and designated scholarship organizations will begin receiving batches of FAFSA information (ISIRs) starting in the first half of March. The information transmitted to schools will include the updated SAI tables.

We are continuing to test several vendor built systems and we will provide regular progress updates to schools and stakeholders as we move forward.

As in previous years, when the Congressional appropriations process has completed and determined the 2024-25 Maximum Federal Pell Grant award amount, ISIRs will be re-processed to reflect that update.

The Department will continue to assist our external partners through webinars, resources, and updates on the Knowledge Center . We also welcome our partners to continue to submit questions related to the 2024-25 FAFSA launch using the Contact Customer Support form in FSA’s Partner Connect Help Center. How to claim 15 hours free childcare including how to get your code

We’re making the  biggest investment  by a UK government into childcare in history, doubling the amount we expect to spend over the next few years from around £4 billion to around £8 billion each year.  

• Currently, eligible working parents of 3 and 4-year-olds can access 30 hours of childcare support.  
• From  April 2024 , eligible working parents of 2-year-olds will be able to access 15 hours childcare support.  
• From  September 2024 , 15 hours childcare support will be extended to eligible working parents with a child from 9-months-old.  
• From  September 2025 , support will reach 30 hours for eligible working parents with a child from 9-months-old up to school age.  

When can I apply?  

Applications are open until 31 March for eligible working parents of 2-year-olds to receive 15 hours free childcare starting from April 2024.  

From 1 April, eligible working parents whose children will be 2 or older by the 31 August, can apply to receive 15 hours childcare starting from September 2024.   

And from 12 May, eligible working parents whose children will be aged between 9- and 23-months old on 31st August, can apply to receive 15 hours childcare starting from September 2024.  

It’s important to remember that codes need to be renewed every three months, so parents applying close to 12 May will need to renew their code prior to the offer starting in September.  

How do I apply?   

You apply online here on   Gov.uk once you have checked our  eligibility criteria .  

You’ll need to make sure you have the following information to hand before starting the application:  

• your national insurance number (or unique taxpayer reference if you are self-employed)  
• the date you started or are due to start work  
• details of any government support or benefits you receive  
• the UK birth certificate reference number (if you have one) for your child.  

You may find out if you’re eligible straight away, but it can take up to 7 days.  

Once your application has been approved, you’ll get a code to give to your childcare provider.  

Eligible parents are also able to access Tax-Free Childcare through the same application system. You can apply for Tax-Free Childcare at any time. However, you don't need to apply for Tax-Free Childcare to be eligible to apply for the 15 hours childcare scheme.   

What happens once I receive my code?  

Once you receive your code, you’ll need to take it to your childcare provider, along with your National Insurance number and your child’s date of birth.  

Your childcare provider will process the code to provide your place.  

Places will be available for September in every area of the country, but a significant minority of settings hold waiting lists of over six months. If you have a preferred nursery for September, you should reach out now to secure a place for your child ahead of receiving your code.  

Your local authority can provide support for finding a government-funded place in your area.  

What if I’m already registered for Tax Free Childcare?  

Parents must reconfirm that they are still eligible for Tax-Free Childcare every 3 months.  

Parents who are already claiming Tax-Free Childcare and need to reconfirm their eligibility between 1 April and 12 May will be automatically issued a code in the post from HMRC soon after the 12 May.   

This is to ensure every parent can give their code to their provider in good time. This code will be valid to apply for 15 hours of government-funded childcare from September.   

If I receive a code in a letter from HMRC, does this make my code on my Childcare Account invalid?  

No. Both codes will be valid.   

Do I need to wait for my reconfirmation window to add another child to my account?  

A parent who is already using the childcare service for another child can add a new child to their account at any time.  

Your reconfirmation cycle for your current Tax-Free Childcare will not affect this.  

How are you making sure there will be enough childcare places for eligible parents?  

Parents that have a preferred place for September should reach out now to their local provider to secure a physical place for their child ahead of time.  

To make sure there are enough places available, we’re investing over £400 million in 2024-25 to increase the hourly rates paid to local authorities.  

The Institute for Fiscal Studies has independently reported that the average funding rates for two-year-olds and under 2s paid by government from April 2024 are projected to be substantially higher than the market rate paid by parents last year, and we have committed to further increases to provider rates for the next two years.  

We have also committed to increasing hourly funding rates over the next two years by an estimated £500 million, to make sure providers can increase places at each phase of the rollout.

Sir, – The lack of places at secondary level comes as little surprise to schools struggling to meet demand (“Three out of four parents unable to secure spots at oversubscribed secondary schools”, Education, March 18th).

As chairperson of a new secondary school in one of the planning areas affected, I can assure your readers that schools themselves bear no blame for the ongoing crisis.

Malahide/Portmarnock Educate Together Secondary School (MPETSS) emerged from a patronage competition in 2016 and was originally scheduled to open its doors in 2017. Delays in securing temporary accommodation forced us to postpone our opening until 2018.

Eight years after our campaign, only the first phase of our permanent accommodation has been built.

Getting this far has taken an enormous effort by our voluntary board of management, our management team, and the entire school community. We have worked tirelessly to progress our build and get the school on its feet.

Regular engagement with local TDs has been central to this process, while questions addressed to the Department of Education have gone unanswered. The timelines for the second phase of our build remain unclear.

Having moved out of temporary accommodation in 2022, we recently learned that we are getting new prefabs for our next intake of students in September. It feels like we are going backwards.

We still have no sports hall.

Had MPETSS opened in 2017 as planned, and had our permanent building been completed in a single phase, we would be far better placed to meet local demand.

Parents are not the only ones who are frustrated. Hard-working school managers, board members and campaigners are frustrated too.

It should not take 10 years or more to build a school. Our students deserve better. – Yours, etc,

Tenant Background Checks and Your Rights

Are you looking for a new place to live or about to renew your lease? If so, you may want to know that a landlord, property manager, or other housing provider may ask a tenant background check company — also called a tenant screening company — to put together a report about you and other members of your household. That’s called a tenant background check, resident screening report, or tenant screening report. Landlords often use these reports to decide whether to rent to you. This article includes information about tenant background checks and your rights related to them.

You can get help if you believe that a background check company or landlord has violated your rights. For example, you can contact a  local fair housing organization , state attorney general,  local legal aid or legal services office , or  other local lawyer .

You can complain to the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD)  Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) and submit a report to the  Department of Justice (DOJ) if you think a landlord or tenant background check company illegally discriminated against you. You can also complain to the  Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the  Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) , if you think a background check company included errors in your background check or if a landlord did not provide required information about the tenant background check company.

When filling out an application with a tenant background check requirement, take the following steps to decrease the likelihood of errors and protect your rights:

• Give the landlord your full name — first, middle (if you have one), and last — and date of birth.  This helps the background check company   get information about the right person.   The landlord will probably also ask for your Social Security number, prior addresses, and possibly other information as well.
• Know whether you’ll pay a fee. The landlords for most HUD-subsidized housing (including public housing and project-based Section 8, Section 202, and Section 811 housing) are not allowed to charge you a fee for an application or background check. But most other landlords, including those accepting Section 8 housing choice vouchers, can — and usually do — charge you a fee.

Before you pay an application or background check fee, ask what information the landlord uses to decide whether to rent to you.  The information that landlords might review as part of a tenant background check includes

• your name, Social Security number, date of birth, and current and past addresses
• your work and income history
• the status of your credit cards and other accounts, including payment history
• housing court records, for example, records related to eviction actions
• criminal records, including arrest, charge, and conviction records
• missed rent or other rent-related payments
• whether you’ve filed for bankruptcy or have been sued (whether or not the lawsuit is related to housing)

The tenant background check company might develop and share with the landlord a recommendation or score that they claim will predict what kind of tenant you will be (such as whether you will pay your rent or damage the property).

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, tenant background check companies cannot report most negative information — for example, most civil lawsuits and judgments, including housing court cases, and arrest records — after seven years. Bankruptcies can be reported for 10 years. However, there is no time limit for criminal convictions. Other laws, including the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and state or local laws, may have more restrictions on what tenant background check companies can report. FHA restrictions are described in more detail later.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, tenant background check companies are required to take reasonable steps to ensure the information in your report is accurate. Common errors may include

• information that belongs to someone else
• incomplete information, such as how civil or criminal cases or eviction actions were resolved
• duplicate information, such as the same criminal record appearing more than once, suggesting they are separate cases
• outdated information, such as information that is legally too old to be included in a background check
• criminal record or eviction information that was sealed or expunged

A landlord might use a background check, a score, or a recommendation from the background check company to make a negative decision, including

• reject your application
• charge you more for rent
• require you to have a co-signer
• demand you pay a larger security deposit

But you have rights if a landlord makes a negative decision about your application because of something a tenant background check company included in a report. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to

• give you the name, address, and phone number of the tenant background check company
• tell you about your rights to dispute inaccurate information and to get a free copy of the report from the background check company if you ask for it within 60 days of the landlord’s notice to you

If they give you the notice orally, ask them if they would be willing to get you a written copy for your records.

Local law may give you more rights related to this type of notice. For example, your city may require that the landlord give you the notice in writing and may require that the landlord include in the notice the specific reason why you were rejected and a summary of the information from the tenant background check company that the landlord relied on.

• Get a copy of the tenant background check. You can ask the landlord if they would be willing to share the tenant background check report with you. But even if the landlord refuses, the background check company must give you a free copy of the report if you request it within 60 days of the adverse action notice. You may not see any score in the report you get from the tenant background check company, but the report must include the information any score or recommendation is based on.
• Dispute any errors on your report.  To fix any errors, contact the background check company and tell them about the errors. Provide copies of any supporting documentation you have with your request. For example, if your report has an error in your criminal history or records from when you were evicted or sued over a housing or other issue, gather any paperwork showing how the action was resolved and provide it as part of your dispute. • Tenant background check   companies must investigate your dispute within 30 days.  The background check company must also tell you the results of the investigation in writing.   If the company makes a correction to your report, give the landlord an updated report or ask the background check company to send it to the landlord.

Errors by tenant background check companies can hurt your chances to secure housing. Take the following steps before applying for housing:

• Check your credit report . Get your free credit report and  fix any errors . To get your annual free credit report from the three major credit bureaus, visit  AnnualCreditReport.com or call 1-877-322-8228. You don’t have to buy anything or pay to fix errors. And   if you have negative but correct information on your credit report, start working to  fix your credit with steps you can take yourself — without paying anyone.
• If the court records look wrong or incomplete, you may be able to contact the court and get the court to correct any issues.
• You may be able to get your previous landlord to submit updated or correct information to the court along with a request to the court to update or correct its records. Making this request to the landlord in writing may increase the chances of getting cooperation from your landlord.
• You may want legal assistance to help you clean up your record. Some courts have local self-help centers that can help you. If your local court does not have a self-help center, speak with a local lawyer to discuss your options for correcting or updating information about unpaid rent, rent disputes, or evictions.  Law Help is a program of  Pro Bono Net , a national nonprofit to help people without lawyers understand their rights and connect to help in their local community.  Check their directory of free or lower cost legal help in your state.
• Seal your records if possible . Check to see if your city or state lets people with criminal or housing court records seal or expunge them (expunging is a way to remove court case information from law enforcement or public records).

In some instances, tenant background checks can lead to illegal discrimination, even if there is no factual error in the report. The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal for tenant background check companies and landlords to discriminate against you because of race, national origin, color, sex (which includes gender identity and sexual orientation), religion, disability, or familial status (which includes persons who have children under 18, who are in the process of obtaining legal custody of children under 18, or who are pregnant). 

A landlord cannot reject your application or treat you differently than other applicants or tenants because of any of these characteristics. For example, if you are Black and get rejected based on your criminal record, but a white applicant with a similar criminal record is accepted, the landlord may be violating your rights under the Fair Housing Act because of race. As another example, if at first the landlord says they do not perform credit checks, but after the landlord learns you are gay, you are told a credit check is required, the landlord may be violating your rights under the Fair Housing Act because of sex.

• A tenant background check company’s or landlord’s action can also be illegal if it uses or encourages the use of irrelevant or unnecessary information to deny you housing, and this negatively affects some groups more than others. This may be discrimination even if the tenant background check company or landlord does not intend to discriminate. • The FHA also requires that landlords make  reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. A reasonable accommodation is a change, exception, or adjustment to a rule, policy, practice, or service if that accommodation may be necessary for a person with a disability to have an equal opportunity to use and enjoy housing. A landlord’s tenant background check policy that fails to consider a person’s disability or provide a reasonable accommodation may, in some instances, violate the FHA or other civil rights laws.

In addition to the FHA, other federal laws help ensure equal access to housing, services, and activities. They include

• The  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) , which prohibits disability-based discrimination in, among other things, access to and use of government activities, programs, and services and access to and use of places of public accommodation (public places and businesses open to the public, such as rental offices, restaurants, hotels, museums, libraries, and parks),
• Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act , which prohibits disability-based discrimination by a federal agency or any organization that gets federal financial assistance,
• Title VI of the Civil Rights Act , which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin by any organization that gets financial assistance from any federal agency, and
• Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) , which prohibits discrimination against individuals applying for or living in federally subsidized housing because they are or have been victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.

Where To Get Help

To correct a tenant background report

You can get additional help if a background check company does not follow the law by responding to your dispute or correcting false information. For example, you can

• Get  legal help .  Contact your state attorney general,  local legal aid or legal services office , or  other local lawyer . If you are a  servicemember , you may wish to also contact your local  Legal Assistance Office .
• Submit a complaint to the CFPB . Your complaint will be shared with the FTC.   The FTC and CFPB enforce the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

If you suspect discrimination

It can be difficult to know for sure if illegal discrimination is happening. But if you think a landlord or a tenant background check company has discriminated, you may consider taking the following steps:

• Keep records of what happened. As soon as possible, write down in detail what happened and when, and who you spoke to.  Back up your notes on your email or other online cloud storage service.
• Get copies of notices. If you’re rejected or get notice of a negative housing decision orally, ask if the landlord will give you the notice in writing, even by email or text.
• Ask for the landlord’s screening criteria or policy in writing. The criteria or policy may be discriminatory. You can consider filing a complaint with HUD and submitting a report to DOJ if you decided not to apply for housing because of the criteria or policy.
• Don’t wait too long before filing a complaint with HUD . A complaint with HUD under the Fair Housing Act must be filed within one year of the discrimination. Some states and localities require filing earlier than one year.
• If you file a timely complaint with HUD, it will investigate your complaint. If HUD determines that there is reasonable cause to believe that discrimination occurred, its lawyers will bring the case on your behalf, for free, before an administrative law judge. Or HUD may refer your case to DOJ, which may bring lawsuits, again for free, on your behalf.
• You do not need a lawyer to file a discrimination complaint with HUD. However, some  local legal aid and legal services offices , civil rights organizations, and  fair housing organizations have lawyers who may be able to advise or represent you.
• Report housing discrimination to DOJ . Under the Fair Housing Act, DOJ may bring a lawsuit where there is a pattern or practice of discrimination. While DOJ determines whether it can file a lawsuit, it may encourage you to file a complaint with HUD.
• Look into additional protections.  Local legal aid and legal services lawyers, lawyers from   civil rights or fair housing organizations,  other local lawyers , and the state attorney general’s office may also be aware of local protections  that your city or state may offer. If you are applying for federally subsidized housing or a Section 8 voucher, you may have additional protections (for example, under the  Violence Against Women Act ). Purple Star Campus Designation SY 2024-25 Application

The Purple Star Campus Designation recognizes Texas school districts and open-enrollment charter school campuses that show support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will accept applications for the 2024-25 school year from April 1, 2024, through June 7, 2024, for campuses to apply for the designation and demonstrate they have met the established criteria:

• Designating a campus-based military liaison;   
• Creating and maintaining an easily accessible web page that includes information for military-connected students and their families;  
• Implementing a campus transition program;  
• Conducting professional development for campus staff on topics related to military-connected students; and   
• A resolution showing support for military-connected students and families;
• Participation in Month of the Military Child, Military Family Appreciation Month; or   
• Partnership with a school liaison officer to encourage and provide opportunities for active-duty military members.

There are currently 331 campuses across the state that have earned this unique designation as a Purple Star Campus. For the list of previously awarded campuses that received the designation, please visit the  Purple Star Campus Designation  website.  

Any Texas school can become a Purple Star Campus, regardless of the size of its military-connected student population. Districts are encouraged to support campuses and help them meet the criteria for Purple Star Campus Designation status. Applications are accepted on an annual basis, and the designation lasts for two years. After the two-year period, campuses that were previously awarded the designation must re-apply to maintain their special designation as a Purple Star Campus.
