Table of Contents

Introduction (Essay on Smoking-1100 Words)

Since ancient times people are used to or accustomed to a few habits. Some habits are harmful, and some are having lots of benefits. Unhealthy habits are like drinking, smoking, and taking drugs .

Nowadays everybody knows that this is horrible practices and habits and we should not adopt this. Most people choose because of their lousy company and make it a hobby. Slowly these habits become their compulsion, which gives him very negative effects and consequences.

What is smoking?

In a common word, we can explain that this is a widespread practice in which people burn any object or its substance, and after that, they take its smoke inside the body through the breathing process. It is done in ancient times.

Before cigarette was there, another method of the burning of tobacco was available, known as a chukka or clay pipe. Now the trend changed, and smoking is inbuilt in a wrapped round paper to burn and use.

Why people smoke?

There is no single reason for smoking. People smoke because of various reasons. Some studies say that tobacco comprises nicotine in its contents.

The characteristics are that it increases addiction and attracts them to use it again. Few people smoke only for just trying it for a while, and they get affected by the effect of nicotine.

Some people say that they get peace of mind relaxation by smoking. Most people start it from teenagers and entire life they cannot leave this habit.

In research, they say it every only one smoker quit smoking out of three, and one person dies out of every three smokers.

Disadvantages of Smoking

All of us know very well about the consequences of smoking. The government also gives information about the losses and side effects of smoking through TV channels.

There are indications and information also printed in each smoking object that this is very harmful and can cause many dangerous diseases as cancer, cough, tuberculosis, etc.

If our health gets affected because of any dangerous disease, then how can we survive in life? Now also thousands of people are there who are changing daily for smoking and fighting for their survival.

So, below are the major problems that may cause because of smoking-

1. Causes Cancer

The studies prove that if anybody smokes 15 cigarettes, this will create a mutation in his body; this mutation is the starting cancer.

The smoke of tobacco goes more in depth in the blood and starts making blood thicker and creates possibilities of blood clot creation. All around the world is proved that smoking is the leading cause of producing cancer in the mouth and throat.

2. Increase Lung Disease

Because of smoking, many lungs-related problems start in the body, and slowly it creates severe diseases in the complete body.

People take not only nicotine but take other harmful chemicals through their breath during smoking. Smoking is responsible for a massive increase in the severe risk of starting and developing lung cancer.

3. Creating Heart Problems

If any one organ of the body got affected, then our other organs also get in the effect of these harmful chemicals because it interconnects our entire body.

If one inner organ is out of order, then another organ cannot work smoothly. Smoking can create cardiovascular problems and damage blood vessel cells.

4. Creates Infertility

Our reproductive system is essential, and delicate, which easily gets affected because of smoking.

Tobacco smoking can damage the reproductive system of males and females both, and after that, it will create infertility problems. If infertility problems occur intensely, then to conceive, it will complicate pregnancy.

5. The complication in Pregnancy

Using tobacco in any form, whether it is chewing or smoking by any means, it creates severe complications in pregnancy. The fetus can damage or affect because of smoking, which can cause the risk of premature delivery.

Because of this, we see many sudden death syndromes in infants. Smoking can reduce the weight of the baby in pregnancy, which creates risk for a newborn.

6. Diabetes Problems

Smoking is one reason for developing diabetes in the human body. They say this type two diabetes.

The researches show that smokers having 30-40 percent risk of developing this diabetes.

7. Oral Hygiene Problems

If we maintain our oral hygiene that we can save ourselves from many debases. Smoking is terrible for our oral system. This creates other severe infections in the mouth, which increases the risk higher of gum-related diseases.

Should Smoking should be banned?

The question is, why is this allowed by the government, and why should it not be banned?

Ideally, it should be banned and never should be entitled to the farming of tobacco, eat, sell, and production of tobacco-related objects and items. Smoking, whether it is public or personal, all are dangerous to health badly.

This is a source of revenue for the government. The tobacco item manufacturing companies pay a considerable amount of every year, which helps financially to the government.

But apart from because of tobacco every year, thousands or lacs of people become sick. The government used to provide separate hospitals and diagnostics centers for prevention and treatment. They invest a considerable amount of money in the medical sector because of permission to use tobacco in society.

Smoking should be banned, and the government should search for any other source or means of revenue in place of the tobacco field. Smoking creates various health problems, as we have discussed above.

Our people or citizen are getting weaker financially because of smoking. In both ways, they waste their money. If they use tobacco and a cigarette, they pay cash, and if they get ill because of this, they pay more than they spent in buying these things.

For the companies and tobacco producers, the government can make an original plan. We should encourage them to start any other production in place of tobacco item productions. This is not compulsory from the government side to produce cigarettes or related materials.

Our society and NGOs also should take steps and start broad complaints to discourage people from using this. The disadvantages of using this tobacco item should be published, and higher taxes to be imposed.

In our last words, we can say that for the sake of humanity, we should stop smoking, and the government also should ban smoking strictly. If we want to save our people’s life and their money, then smoking should be prohibited; otherwise, our next generation will get addiction more than now. If citizens of any country are weak or sick, then that country cannot progress.

Cigarette Smoking and Its Effects Essay

Tobacco, the chief plant used to make cigarettes, has been growing on earth for more than eight thousand years. In today’s world, cigarette smoking is a very common practice across the entire world. It is a familiar hobby to both the young and the elderly people, race and gender notwithstanding. However, though a universally embraced practice which to some extent helps the users, cigarette smoking has very adverse effects especially when its use is prolonged.

The effects of smoking cigarettes are serious and deadly in many instances. “There are approximately 4000 chemicals in cigarettes, hundreds of which are toxic. The ingredients in cigarettes affect everything from the internal functioning of organs to the efficiency of the body’s immune system” (Martin). Cigarettes contain nicotine, which after inhalation takes ten seconds to reach the brain. Carbon monoxide, found in cigarettes, heavily affects the body’s oxygenation by binding with the haemoglobin present in the red blood cells. Most of the other chemicals in cigarettes are cancer-causing agents, carcinogens, and they damage the important genes responsible for cell growth thus leading to the development of various cancers.

Even with its popularity being on the rise, cigarette smokers find themselves in a social fix: cigarette smoking is so offensive for non-smokers to stand because the non-smoking bystanders are compelled to inhale smoke exhaled by the smokers and the smoke from the burning tip. There are rules across all nations that regulate cigarette smoking. For the non-smokers, this act is a vice. Most employers in today’s world prefer to employ non-smokers. In addition, cigarette smoking may ruin relationships between the smoker and his or her friends or relatives. This is because most social facilities such as theatres, public buildings, and sports stadiums are smoke-free. This limits the extent to which the smokers interact with others. In light of the above, cigarette smoking lowers the smoker’s personal reputation to the public. Actually, it is mostly only among fellow smoker that a cigarette smoker has actual respect, irrespective of the smokers’ professionalism.

It is obvious that cigarette smoking has such adverse negative consequences for the users, but it is hard to ignore the fact that there is a relatively positive aspect about cigarette smoking, economic wise. Cigarette smoking is very addictive. Once one starts and becomes a daily user, it is very hard to quit. This means that the cigarette manufacturing company’s demand schedules never shift downwards. If anything, consumption of cigarettes is usually on the rise. As a result, the year to year profits of the cigarette manufacturing companies is continuously on a higher level. This is a good move to the governments since the higher the profit, the higher the corporate tax due from those companies. Additionally, the governments levy a customs tax on all tobacco products. Since the governments are aware of the addictiveness of this, this levy is usually high. Its intentions are to try and reduce the number of cigarette smokers but as it always happens, it ends up as a huge source of government revenue since it is very hard for cigarette smokers to quit this practice.

Cigarette smoking is a practice that dates back in history. Over the years, it has seen its establishment expanding especially with the globalization trends in recent years. It is true that smoking cigarettes carry with it quite a number of negative effects. However, smokers are aware of these effects and continue to smoke nonetheless. Therefore, the future of smoking cigarettes is definite and the effects it brings will not affect it.

Smoking: Effects, Reasons and Solutions Essay

Reasons for smoking, harmful health effects of smoking, solution to smoking.

Smoking is the inhalation and exhalation of substances or fumes that come from burning tobacco. In the past, smoking was believed to be risk-free, but medical studies have recently reported that tobacco smoking has about 4000 chemical elements. These chemical elements contain toxic components. This presentation provides harmful health effects of smoking, reasons for smoking, and solutions to smoking.

  • Advertising causes mainly young people to smoke. Cigarette smoking is advertised several times more than any commodity apart from cars. Several tobacco advertisements are carried out in attractive and amusing places. For young people to be part of these gorgeous places, they might consider the necessity to buy that product.
  • Another reason is the “everybody’s doing it” attitude, where during adolescent stage, teenagers are urgently attempting to squeeze in and be cool.
  • For some young people, smoking might signify independence or freedom. One key development role of teenage stage is to declare independence from their parents or guardians through building personal identity.
  • Weight control is a significant concern among adolescent girls and is demonstrated in cigarette adverts and posters. Adolescents are not at all shown what cigarette smoking does to teenagers’ lungs and heart.
  • Adults smoke for certain motives. They may have numerous stress and pressure cases due to financial and private difficulties.
  • Finally, most lifetime smokers state that they love smoking. Smoking offers them enjoyment and only makes smokers have a sense of happiness.
  • Thousands of tobacco users die around the world annually due to smoke-related illness.
  • Some tobacco users are reported to die due to their habit, where most deaths occur in middle age.
  • The combination of carbon dioxide and nicotine substances in all cigarettes that are being smoked momentarily raises blood pressure and heart rate. This damages the blood vessels.
  • Smoking can result in stroke and heart attacks since it hinders blood flow, interrupting oxygen to various parts of the body, such as feet and hands.
  • Introduction of cigarettes with low tar does not reduce these effects since smokers often prefer deeper puffs and hold the smoke in lungs for a long period. This smoking practice draws the tar deeper into the deeper parts of the lungs.
  • Carbon dioxide takes away oxygen from muscles, body, and brain tissues, this process makes entire body, particularly the heart, work extra hard. Eventually, the airways puff up and allow inadequate air, especially oxygen, into the lungs.
  • Tobacco usage during pregnancy raises the possibility of low birth weight, unplanned abortion, prematurity, and prenatal mortality in women. This has been considered by medical practitioners a fetal cigarette smoking disorder.
  • Nicotine substitute substances are accessible through medical professions and health clinics, which comprise doses, nasal sprays, and transdermal. Most smokers believe that smoking is more economical to relieve desires while they concentrate on taking away the psychological position of the addiction.
  • Mentally organizing yourself to give up smoking allows the smoker to adapt to the concept of becoming a nonsmoker. Smokers should take some time to cope with the concept rather than making instant decision in quitting smoking.
  • NRT raises the success rate for smokers under cessation sessions since every form of NRT has been reported to be efficient. They have minimal or no severe side effects to smokers.
  • Combination therapy that engages the drug Zyban, the concurrent using of NRT (bubble gum) and counseling of smokers under smoking cessation program appear to be an efficient solution for most tobacco users.

This review investigates the impacts of banning the sale of menthol cigarettes at stores.

A systematic search of studies published in English up to November 2022 was conducted. The following databases were searched: PubMed/Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Embase, as well as a non-indexed journal. Studies evaluating either the impact of real-world or hypothesized menthol cigarette bans were included. Primary outcomes include tobacco use behaviors. Secondary outcomes include cigarette sales, retailer compliance, and the tobacco industry’s response to a menthol ban. Data on tobacco use behavior after a menthol ban were pooled using random-effects models. Two pairs of reviewers independently extracted data and assessed study quality.

Of the 964 articles that were identified during the initial search, 78 were included in the review and 16 were included in the meta-analysis. Cessation rates among menthol cigarette smokers were high after a menthol ban. Pooled results show that 24% (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 20%, 28%) of menthol cigarette smokers quit smoking after a menthol ban, 50% (95% CI: 31%, 68%) switched to non-menthol cigarettes, 12% (95% CI: 3%, 20%) switched to other flavored tobacco products, and 24% (95% CI: 17%, 31%) continued smoking menthol cigarettes. Hypothesized quitting and switching rates were fairly close to real-world rates. Studies found the tobacco industry attempts to undermine menthol bans. National menthol bans appear more effective than local or state menthol bans.

Menthol cigarette bans promote smoking cessation suggesting their potential to improve public health.

Findings from this review suggest that menthol cigarette bans promote smoking cessation among menthol cigarette smokers and have the potential to improve public health.

The burden of tobacco

Tobacco (smoking or smokeless) use is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced and it is one of the major preventable causes of death and disability worldwide. 1 Cigarette smoking is the most popular form of tobacco use. There are 1.1billion tobacco users in the world, 70% of whom are in low-income countries 2 . Tobacco use in children and adolescents is reaching pandemic levels. The World Bank has reported that between 82,000-99,000 children and adolescents worldwide and 5,500 adolescents in India begin smoking every day. 3 About half of them will continue to smoke to adulthood and half of the adult smokers are expected to die prematurely due to smoking related diseases. In view of the deep-rooted nature, the eradication of tobacco habit would require concerted action resulting into a social change. Community education regarding tobacco and its health hazards would necessarily be an integral component of such an action plan. Anti-tobacco education needs to be targeted at decision-makers, professionals and the general public, especially the youth. Efficacy of educational activities in tobacco cessation had amply been demonstrated by various organizations.

If current smoking trends continue, tobacco will kill nearly 250 million of today’s children. 4 , 5 The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 4.9 million deaths annually are attributable to tobacco i.e., an average of one person every six seconds and that tobacco accounts for one in 10 adult deaths worldwide. 6 This figure is expected to rise to 10 million in 2030, with 70% of these deaths occurring in developing countries like China and India. These are frightening statistics.

The prevention of tobacco use in young Indians appears to be the single greatest opportunity for preventing non- communicable disease in the world today as it is home to one sixth of the global population and thus India’s share of the global burden of tobacco-induced disease and death is substantial. The WHO, which provides these estimates, also predicts that India will have the fastest rate of rise in deaths attributable to tobacco in the first two decades of the twenty first century. 7

Currently, about one-fifth of all worldwide deaths attributed to tobacco occur in India, where more than 800,000 people die and 12 million people become ill as a result of tobacco use each year. In India, the deaths attributable to tobacco are expected to rise from 1.4% of all deaths in 1990 to 13.3% in 2020. 8 India amassed over 1.7 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) due to disease and injury attributable to tobacco use. 9 The National Family Health Survey-3 (2005-06), which was carried out among in the age group of 15-49 years, shows use of any kind of tobacco in women was 10.8% and in men 57.0% and if only smoking is considered it was 1.6% in women and 33.3% in men. 10 A Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) (2009), in collaboration with WHO, conducted in India in the age group of 13-15 years, shows 6.1% students had ever smoked cigarettes, 14.6% currently use any tobacco product, 4.4% currently smoke cigarettes, 12.5% currently use tobacco products other than cigarettes, and 15.5% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking in the next year. 11 The increasing prevalence of tobacco use may be due to lack of effective tobacco control by the government. 12

Chewing tobacco

In India, chewing tobacco is slowly becoming endemic. Students, professionals, taxi drivers, labourers, children, young and old people all take it. 13 A recent survey revealed use of chewing tobacco by nearly 70% of college students in several Indian cities. 13 Locally, it’s often called as “Gutka” (also known as gutkha, guttkha, guthka) or “Sir”. This smokeless tobacco is so popular that highly qualified professionals, such as doctors, also use it. 14 Gutka’s main ingredients are betel nuts mixed with areca nut, slaked lime, catechu and tobacco in granulated form, collectively known as Pan Masala, when added to betel leaves (known as Paan) may be harmless without the tobacco. The idea is to chew and later spit it out or it can be swallowed. There are several reasons for its use. Mostly it ma be preferred to smoking tobacco because it is fume-free and can be well hidden inside the mouth. Thus users may believe that it creates less of a nuisance for others. Its small, striking and low-cost sachets appeal to many young people. A primary ingredient of chewing tobacco is nicotine. The biggest risk from chewing tobacco is oral cancer. Annual oral cancer incidence in the Indian subcontinent has been estimated to be as high as 10 per 100,000 among males. Its use also leads to decay of the roots of the teeth and stains on teeth. 15 – 16

Legislation regarding tobacco use

Considering the effects of smoking on health calls for strong legislation to deter people from taking up smoking, to protect people, especially young people from the harmful effects of tobacco.

Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO):

The WHO used its mandate of proposing international treaties on public health for the first time in its history, by initiating the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). After several years of negotiations, in which over a hundred countries participated, the Convention was adopted by the World Health Assembly in May 2003. India was one among the first few countries to sign and ratify the FCTC. India was also among the first countries to enact a strong national law for tobacco control in April 2003. 7

Tobacco Control Act, 2003:

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (prohibition of advertisement and regulation of trade and commerce, production, supply, and distribution) Bill, 2003, was a more comprehensive description for the control of tobacco as stated: “A bill to prohibit the advertisement of, and to provide for the regulation of trade and commerce in, and production, supply and distribution of, cigarettes and other tobacco products and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.” This new legislation was explicitly intended to reduce tobacco consumption, in contrast to the Tobacco Board Act, which had favoured tobacco production.

Scope of the Act:-

The Tobacco Control Act, 2003 is applicable to all products containing tobacco in any form i.e., Cigarettes, cigars, cheroots, bidis, gutka, pan masala (containing tobacco) khaini, mawa, mishri, snuff etc. and it applies to all of India.

The main provisions of the Act are: 1) Prohibition of smoking in public places; implemented from 2 nd Oct, 2008 in the whole of India 2) Prohibition of advertisement, sponsorship and promotion of tobacco products 3) Prohibition of sale of tobacco products near educational institutions 4) Regulation of health warnings on tobacco product packs 5) Regulation of tar and nicotine contents of tobacco products. 17 The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched the pilot phase of the National Tobacco Control Programme in 2007-08 in 9 states of the country covering 18 districts. In 2008, it has been up scaled to 42 districts across 21 states.

Recent legislative initiatives by the Government of India: 18

In 2008, Section 4 of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act (COTPA) specifying the smoke free rules came into effect, prohibiting smoking in all public and work places from October 2, 2008. As a result, public places such as offices, airports, hospitals, shopping malls, cinema halls, banks, hotels, restaurants and bars, public transport, educational institutions and libraries are now smoke free across India.

  • This act also stipulates that:
  • There should be a visible board at every entrance and every floor of a public place that “No Smoking Area- Smoking is an Offence”.
  • Any hotel or restaurant having seating capacity of 30 or more shall have physically segregated smoking and non-smoking areas.
  • The penalty for violations is a fine of up to Rs 200/-

Pack warnings:

Evidence shows that one of the most effective ways to warn the public about ill-effects of tobacco use is to put pictorial health warnings on all packages of tobacco products. 19 The products will have to clearly display a ‘scorpion’ and ‘lungs’ as pictorial warnings (see Figure 1). The picture should cover at least 40% of the principal display area of the pack. Since Feb 1, 2007, pictorial warnings in India have been diluted thrice and delayed over half a dozen times. 20 Strong, effective, evidence-based warnings notified by government on September 29, 2007 were rejected because ministry was forced by the tobacco lobby, and substituted by a set of three images that are softer and un-tested. 20 On May 6, 2009, the Supreme Court issued an order that pictorial health warnings will be implemented on all tobacco products. Pictorial warnings on all tobacco products as specified under Section 7, 8, 9 of the COTPA have become mandatory from 31 May, 2009. 20 It remains to be seen how effective pack warnings will prove to be in India. On the whole, pack warnings on tobacco packages will enable the public, including the less literate and vulnerable individuals, such as children, to be informed of the hazards of tobacco use. 21 The Health Ministry is likely to approach the Cabinet request a change to pack warnings by proposing “rotation of warnings every two years”, instead of the mandated 12 months, but there is concern that this may have a negative effect on the impact of the messages. 22

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) amendment Act, 2007 was implemented with a view to protect public health by prohibiting smoking in public places, banning advertisements of the tobacco products, banning the sale of tobacco products to minors and near educational institutions, prescribing strong health warnings including pictorial depiction on tobacco products and regulation of tar and nicotine contents of tobacco products. 23

Recommendations

In India, people have used tobacco in many forms for several centuries. Its use often starts early in life. There is tendency towards an increase in tobacco use among youth for the past few decades, with an emphasis on smokeless tobacco use. 24 This is a matter of great public health concern. Psychosocial factors have an important role to play in initiation of this habit. 24 It has been observed that a large number of adolescents pick up this habit from their family members or the peers. 24 Enforcement of regulations on sale of tobacco products may be useful. However, legislation regarding the use of tobacco products needs to be strengthened to decrease availability, accessibility and affordability of tobacco products. It is also necessary to keep abreast of the policies and conventions of the international agencies such as WHO, United Nations International Drug Control Program (UNDCP) and other similar agencies on tobacco use, in order to utilize their expertise for curbing this problem. A major tobacco control strategy is an appropriate price policy to keep the price of tobacco products high with regular increases above the level of inflation. This is because price and consumption, especially the initiation of tobacco use by young, shows a strong inverse correlation everywhere in the world. 25 There is also an urgent need to take effective steps, especially to increase the education of parents to help prevent children from taking-up this habit in the first place, and also to have targeted school intervention strategies through counselling and direct education of school children regarding this issue. The adult population must be educated, through launching community awareness programs, about the consequences of tobacco use.

Essay on Smoking & Tobacco, 500 Words

By: Haque , For class 9-10/SSC, 08-01-’22

Points of synopsis:

  • An ancient practice.
  • Smoking came in vogue in Europe in the 16th century after the discovery of America.
  • It is now not merely a fashion but a fact of modern life.
  • Evils of smoking — extremely injurious to health.
  • It is also a wasteful practice that involves at least 5% of the total national dividend of an advanced country like the USA.

Tobacco chewing has been practiced in many parts of the world, including the Indian subcontinent, since ancient times. But smoking started on a larger scale after the discovery of America by Columbus, i.e. early 16th century. Experts say that the word tobacco has come from the name of Tobago Island, in the West Indies, where tobacco is largely cultivated. The word ‘nicotine’, that harmful chemical which tobacco contains in a large percentage, has taken its name from the then French minister of the same name. Whatever that may be, tobacco addiction is now a widespread fashion all over the world.

There are, of course, many apologists for tobacco smoking. They say that for releasing tense nerves, tobacco is certainly a good solvent. Pursuing this mistaken notion many tender-aged boys, even girls, take to smoking. Some literature are of opinion that by supplying the fume of tobacco to the brain through smoking one can recruit one’s ideas better and produce excellent literature. In this way, misguided students smoke hard before examinations in the hope of putting up an excellent performance in answer papers. According to some others, tobacco smoking is only a diversion and consolation for the poor and hardworking laborers.

Medical men and researchers are unanimous in condemning tobacco smoking. Along with nicotine by lightening cigarette or any variant of it, one inhales poisonous chemicals that definitely and invariably shorten one’s longevity. Tobacco is nothing short of venom to these people who suffer from asthma or other respiratory ailments. About 10% of the population of the world die before their time due to tobacco smoking. Nicotine and other harmful compounds generate fatal diseases like lung cancer, blood pressure, acidity, stomach ulcer, and various other intractable ailments. By smoking five cigarettes every day one deducts five years from one’s usual span of life. Even those who are forced to smell tobacco while sitting nearby the smoker, suffer as passive smokers from fatal diseases. In short, there is nothing in a cigarette to commend it for acceptance. Yet young people are found pressing cigarettes between their lips just to look smart. According to the World Health Organization, more than 8 million people worldwide die each year as a result of tobacco use. About 8 million people die every year directly or indirectly for smoking.

It has been already said that a large number of deaths are accounted for by reckless smoking. It is no plea that some chain-smokers have not suffered from cancer. Smoking was considered by our forefathers as a kind of sin. They are justified in one sense; for it is like the path of sin that is always slippery. The vogue of tobacco often leads to alcoholic and even more fatal drug habits. Besides, tobacco smoking is nowadays a very expensive habit and, once started, it is very difficult to give up the practice. One may take the vow like Mark Twain, the American literateur of last century, who took twenty oaths a day of not to smoke and broke each of them. Thus his oath lasted only for the time between the end of one and the lightening of the next cigarette. For once tobacco smoking is taken up, it gets into the blood and it becomes difficult to get out of the addiction. So, it is always better not to start it like prevention that is always better than cure.

A Paragraph on the Dangers of Smoking, 200 Words

By: Haque , For class 9-12, 07-01-’22

Smoking is a bad habit without any doubt. There are many harmful effects of this bad habit. The most dangerous effect is that it causes serious health hazards. A smoker increases the risk of being attacked with heart attack, stroke, and cancer. He usually suffers from various kinds of respiratory diseases like bronchitis, asthma, and coughing. A smoker can not enjoy a fresh breath. A bad smell comes out of his mouth that causes serious irritation to the non-smokers. Non-smokers are also harmed by a smoker when he smokes before them. It is an irony that despite knowing the bad effects of smoking, people smoke. A precautionary slogan ‘smoking is harmful to health’ is written on the cigarette packet. But smokers are unaware of it. In fact, smoking is a serious addiction. It becomes very difficult to give up this habit if someone is addicted to it. So it is better not to get habituated. Recently Government has taken some steps to discourage smoking and protect non-smokers from being affected by smokers. A law has been passed to ban smoking in public places. It is true that this effort is not sufficient to prevent people from smoking. It is necessary to raise a social campaign against smoking and make people aware of the danger of smoking.
