Autocratic Leadership

Laissez-Faire Leadership

The members of the team are given responsibility in this style of management. They are free to choose how they spend their time at work, with minimal oversight from the boss. It's not a good way to lead, according to experts.

Transactional Leadership

Self-reflection in leadership

Self-reflection at its simplest means taking time to think, contemplate, examine and review yourself as part of increasing your self-awareness . Self-reflection in leadership means carving out time to review yourself as a leader and is critical for your leadership development. It involves examining your current level of skills, your strengths, weaknesses, behavioural patterns and how you seek to influence others. It is also about interrogating your values, goals and ambitions. All this serves to increase your self-knowledge, alignment, authenticity, and learning and growth. Self-reflection also accelerates improvement in your leadership skills and practice – and enables you to better understand others.

“By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.” – Confucius

Why self-reflection in leadership development?

However, according to consultant Peter Miller, once Associate Professor in Management  at  Southern  Cross University  Business  School,  Australia in Self-reflection: the key to effective leadership :

‘Most authorities on leadership development understand the importance of assisting managers and leaders to engage in self-discovery and self-reflection. Recorded statements from philosophers about the need for self-awareness and reflection for those in leadership positions goes back thousands of years to ancient philosophers and teachers like Confucius, Socrates, Plato, Jesus and Mohammed. However, research has shown that self-reflection is possibly a manager’s least favourite activity.’   

So why is self-reflection so difficult for some people? Apart from actually making time for it?

Jennifer Porter talks about the benefits of self-reflection to improve performance through assimilating lessons learned. And a recent study by Lanaj et al highlights the fact that self-reflection can motivate leaders to engage in energy-generating activities. Heightening their engagement and energising leaders also makes them more influential.

We know that self-reflection is an important process in leadership development – not only for new leaders, but for all leaders – especially those who operate in constantly changing environments.

Areas for self-reflection

Self-reflection can and should take place all throughout your leadership journey, and across all aspects of your leadership role. Let’s break down those different areas of self-knowledge:

  • Personal ambitions, passions, intentions, goals
  • Individual and organisational values

Personality types

  • Thinking styles
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Reflective learning – what to do and how to do it

Ambitions, passions, goals 

In my coaching practice, I still see too many women who are reticent about their ambitions, and overly modest about their experience and achievements. It’s time to step up, speak out and be proud. Ask yourself, now:

  • Desire – what do you really want?
  • Passion – what lights your fire, and fills you with passion?
  • Goals – what are your primary goals?

Self-reflection and self-knowledge mean exploring who you are and what you want – and specifically, identifying what you want your leadership to look like. This takes into consideration not only your values and passions, but also involves recognising your strengths and acknowledging your skills and experiences.

  • What kind of leader do you want to be?
  • Who do you need to be, to lead on your own terms?

Personal and organisational values

When was the last time you articulated, reviewed, or reflected on your personal values? Take time to add this activity to your agenda. Reflect on the following questions and/or Google ‘personal values test’.

Understanding your personal values is the first step to self-awareness and is an important area of self-reflection in leadership. That said, we  we often develop our most important values unconsciously. Let’s bring them to consciousness.

  • A leader you admire – think of the person you most admire. Which three words or phrases describe the qualities you admire in them?
  • Your legacy – what do you want to be remembered for?
  • Core values – what are your values? Which things, people and qualities are most important to you?

Values-based leadership sets the tone for the organisation, from the top. Our values drive our behaviour, impacting on how we respond to the issues we encounter. They also serve as an example for others in the organisation. ‘Values-driven leadership’ has become even more important over the last decade and as Miller says, ‘the leader’s personal values may be one of the most important determinants of how the leader’s power is exercised or constrained’ in an organisation.

It is equally important to look at how your personal values align (or don’t align) with the values of the organisation you are working in.

  • What are your organisation’s values?
  • How do your personal values align with those of your organisation?
  • How do your leadership values align with your organisation’s leadership values?
  • Remember, values are not static – they can change over time – and they do not exist in isolation.

As part of self-reflection in leadership, specifically the process of gaining self-awareness, leaders should also seek to understand their own personality type. For example, are you introverted or extroverted? Intuitive or analytical? What are your strengths? How do you self-sabotage? How does this impact on your work and relationships – and on your leadership style?

There are hundreds of personality type tests (like Myers Briggs, Hogan, DISC, Birkman) and instruments that are available free, online. Just type ‘big five personality test’ into your search engine – and find out what makes you tick. Or you might also want to try Shirzad Chamine’s positive intelligence test to identify your saboteurs. Once you understand your own personality type and appreciate its implications for yourself, your work, and your team, you can ‘work yourself’ better – you’ll know how to motivate yourself, and how to improve and enhance your performance.

Then, seek to understand the personality types of your managers and followers. This enables you to predict their individual behaviour and performance, and to act in ways relevant to people’s diverse personality types. This increases the effectiveness of your communication – and achieves better outcomes.

  • Self-learning: What have you learned about yourself, recently?
  • Descriptions: What three words or phrases most clearly define your personality?
  • Ideal: Who is your ideal self?

You can be a really effective leader, through self-reflection. Be self-aware and know how you respond to various situations. And remember –

  • Schedule time for self-reflection in your day and/or week
  • Look at both what is going well and not so well, or find a balance between the positive and the negative
  • Find a way of reflecting that works for you

In today’s world, a leader has many things to keep in balance and sometimes it is quite hard to do so especially with the changing environment of leadership. In his video, Dr. Spencer talks about five hurdles that leaders need to be wary of; insomnia, anxiety, home life energy, trusted confidant and misguided tensions. He views these five aspects as some of the barriers that stop leaders from being at their best (Spencer, 2011). As a leader, the one thing I am usually so anxious about is whether my decisions are usually the correct ones for a specific situation. In many occasions, I am faced with different challenges that require different courses of action to remedy them. In many occasions, I doubt my decisions but in almost all of them, my decision is usually the correct one. I have learnt that the only way to rectify this is by having confidence in me and believing that the course of action I take is most suited for that particular problem. Dr. Spencer provides some remedies for anxiety attacks. Breathing through an anxiety attack has proven to be quite effective. Visualizing happy thoughts has also helped many suppress attacks in the past. Having positive thoughts when attacks come is one very impressive way of combating attacks. Moving to places that are calm and are free of stressful activity takes the mind off situations that may cause anxiety attacks. Finally, taking care of the pre-conscious mind through rest and sleep is the most important. Sleep helps the mind get enough rest and creates room for creativity and other ideas (Spencer, 2010) Any successful leader can attest to the fact that he has some people close to him with whom they share a lot, not just about work, but also personal issues. Trusted confidants are very important since they relieve the pressure of having to carry the burdens of being a leader. If one decided to ride solo as a leader, then the pressures of leadership are bound to have a toll on him. Having an emotional Board of Directors means having a number of personal confidants who know about the secrets of being a leader and with whom you can share frustrations with, people you can consult with before taking a specific course of action. Many great leaders have confidants; presidents have a counsel of confidants commonly referred to as the inside circle. Currently, there are three people on my emotional Board of Directors; my mother, my wife and my sister. These are three most close people I have and they have been with me through thick and thin. I chose my mother because no one understands the pain of a child better than the mother. She has been with me throughout my leadership positions and she has offered some great insight. My wife is my confidant because she is the one I go home to. Crossing the hurdle that Dr. Spencer described as “home life energy”, my wife gets to know how my day was and she has been supportive ever since I met her. My sister is my closest friend; she has known every little secret about me and she can be trusted to keep some more. I plan to expand my circle of trusted friends to incorporate my close business partners especially those we are in agreements with and those I have known for the longest period. Your family can only go so far and having a friend other than family is important to ensure that you can always have someone to talk to when things get rough.

What does it mean when you don’t see yourself as a leader? 

It means you’re not contributing all of your talents to your organization. 

You’re suffering from self-doubt and you’re not having the impact that you could. 

You’re not distinguishable from anyone else and that means you’re replaceable. 

You know what you should be doing and that may be from preconceived notions that we’ve heard about what it actually means to be a leader.  

You hear phrases like “They were born to lead” but you don’t feel that way about yourself. 

If you’ve gotten to this point in your career, you need to read the rest of this post. 

How to See Yourself As a Leader  

Let’s first put away this notion that leaders are born and not made. 

People are born as babies. 

Leadership is learned over a lifetime. 

1. Your belief system. 

You must believe that you can lead. 

You must believe you have the knowledge, skills, ability and values to lead. 

I think you have all those things but it only matters how you believe in yourself. 

If you don’t have the right belief system, you won’t have the right behaviors. 

If you don’t have the right behaviors, you won’t have the right actions. 

If you don’t have the right actions, you won’t have the outcomes you need. 

So, what do you believe about yourself?

As a leader, there is typically a conflict between the leader we aspire to be and the leader we actually are. While one can determine the characteristics of the leader they aspire to be, it is the opinions of others that largely reflects the actual characteristics of a leader. When describing myself as a leader, I am more likely to highlight all of my most positive attributes. While I am aware of where I fall short as a leader, which is an important element of understanding oneself as a person and leader, I am not as likely to highlight those negative attributes when describing my leadership skills or style. Therefore, I am portraying the leader I aspire to be. Alternatively, if someone else were asked about my leadership, some of their statements might corroborate mine, while others might be vastly different. Those I am leading have a better sense of who I actually am as a leader. Therefore, it is important to me to be open to constructive criticism and feedback on how my leadership style impacts others. One’s personality definitely plays a major role in determining how a leader might describe themselves. I have found that my sense of self and my perception of my abilities greatly shape how I characterize myself as a leader. My personality, especially the person I aspire to be, also plays a role in changing how I would describe myself as a leader.

As a leader, I value honesty, transparency, relationships, communication, hardwork, and fun. Being a leader has taught me many wonderful lessons, and also been one of the most challenging experiences of my life. When I consider that I am being entrusted with leading others and an organization to new heights, it creates a welcomed fear within me. While I might have visions, plans, and goals, I recognize that sometimes, we cannot plan for certain outcomes. This has especially been true in my experiences in S.M.A.R.T. Yet, despite some of the setbacks I may have encountered, I want others to describe me as a leader who was honest and upfront. I am one of the first people to remind others that I am not perfect, nor do I aspire to be. When I make a mistake, I aim to own up to it, whether it be with other members of my executive board or the general membership. Such transparency is important because it establishes a trusting relationship between myself and others. I believe it also reminds them that they are welcomed to make mistakes as well. I am not perfect and I do not expect them to be either. Additionally, I want people to describe me as a leader who was relatable and “just like them.” While it has been an honor to be the President of S.M.A.R.T., I strive to not take the title too seriously. I am more concerned with the work that needs to get done than the title I hold. Therefore, it was one of the best compliments I’d received when another executive board members described me as seeming like “one of the members.” I was proud of this comment because I want others to see me, in some respects, as one of them. To me, it is very important as a leader to not expect my members or others to do something that I would not do myself. Thus, when they see me as one of them, they are able to relate to me a bit more and see me as Charisma the person and not associate me as closely with my title. In the same regard, I am also cautious about maintaining the respect and responsibility of actually leading. While I want others to see me as one of them, I also want them to respect the authority I do have in the organization. This is not to suggest that I am a dictator or ruler, but as a president, there is a certain authority and expectation of respect that comes with the position. I hope others are able to see me as relatable without disrespecting me. Lastly, I want others to describe me as a leader who is passionate and cares. My passion is what motivates me to keep going. Throughout my years in S.M.A.R.T., it was my love for our mission and purpose that kept me dedicated to the organization. It is important for me that others recognize the dedication and passion I have for what I am leading. My philosophy is that I would rather not do something at all if I know I cannot give it my full effort. Therefore, if others perceive me as the leader who shows that she does not care, I feel like I am failing at fulfilling my purpose as a leader.

My personality plays a major role in the aforementioned potential descriptions of my leadership. I am a very goal-driven person and I believe the leader I aspire to be, and be perceived as, is also very ambitious. While I rebuke being called “perfect,” I have come to terms with my strong desire to be the best. I believe my leadership descriptions also invoke this sense of wanting to be the best- I want to be relatable to my members but also a respected authority, I want to show my passion by being involved in everything and being an example, I want to be honest and transparent. Ultimately, I hope to be taken seriously but also perceived as humble. While I welcome constructive criticism, I know if a comment is too critical, I will take it more personally than I hope. I recognize that as a person, and as a leader, I enjoy making others happy. In my personal life, I would prefer to be perceived in a more positive light than negative. Therefore, even in my leadership (wanting to be accepted by others, etc.), I can detect that there is a fundamental desire to be liked by those I am leading. I recognize that sometimes, leadership requires making decisions that are not pleasing to everyone, and I believe I am able to handle those situations when they arise. However, I would much rather make most of the population happy. To me, this is merely compromising to meet the needs of others, which is important because leadership is more about others’ needs to me than my own. My personality also plays a role as I am a rather outgoing person, and my desire to be relatable and establish relationships with others is definitely reflective of this. Lastly, I would also describe myself as someone who is very charismatic. I would hope that the way I carry myself and lead inspires something within others. An underlying theme with all of my leadership descriptions is this desire to be an example for others to follow. The charismatic aspect of my personality definitely shines through in this respect.

Overall, I believe our personality plays a great role in shaping how we describe ourselves as leaders as well as how we hope others might describe us. It is difficult to separate one’s personality from their leadership. I can definitely see how my personality impacts my decision-making and interactions as a leader. While I tend to be sweet and understanding as a person and as a leader, I also have a side of me that gets “fired up” and can be dominating and uncompromising. While I try to keep that side of me at bay, it does come out every now and again, whether I am passionately arguing a point on behalf of my organization or if I am upset about something in my personal life. It is interesting to actually analyze the ways in which our leadership is impacted by our personalities. While I have always been aware of the correlation, I have never explicitly examined exactly how it does have an impact.

Occupying a leadership position is not the same thing as leading. To lead, you must be able to connect, motivate, and inspire a sense of ownership of shared objectives. Heightening your capacity to lead others requires being able to see how you think and act, and how your behavior affects others. Leading well requires a continuous journey of personal development. Yet people in leadership roles often eschew the long and challenging work of deepening self-insight in favor of chasing after management “tools”— preferably the “quick ’n’ easy” kind, such as personality type assessments that reduce employees to a few simplistic behavioral tendencies. Tools can be handy aids to good leadership. But none of them can take the place of fearless introspection, feedback seeking, and committed efforts to behavioral change for greater effectiveness and increased positive impact on others.

When you’re an individual contributor, your ability to use your technical expertise to deliver results is paramount. Once you’ve advanced into a leadership role, however, the toolkit that you relied on to deliver individual results rarely equips you to succeed through others. Beware of falling into the logical trap of “if I can do this work well, I should be able to lead a team of people who do this work.” This would be true if leading others were akin to operating a more powerful version of the same machinery you operated previously. A strange question . Like many other questions you may face in your job interview. But leadership is a highly sought-after quality in all types of organizations, and you may face at least one or two questions related to leading others in an interview for any position .

Other people can perhaps better consider your leadership qualities. People you led in your last job, your former colleagues and bosses, or even your teachers and schoolmates–if you happen to be just starting your professional career . But hiring managers talk to you, not to your former colleagues or classmates. They have to rely on your own evaluation.

As a rule of a thumb, you should at least suggest that you have a leader inside . Of course, if you’ve already had a chance to demonstrate your leadership qualities , you can talk about that demonstration. One way or another, show confidence in your ability to lead others and help them grow. And avoid short answers . Regardless of what you say, you should always elaborate on your words–explaining why you consider yourself a leader (or contrariwise).

  • I definitely consider myself a good leader. In my last job in marketing I managed to lead a team of four diverse personalities to completion of seven marketing campaigns. Of course we had conflicts and things didn’t always go according to the plan . But such issues belong to every team, I managed to address them, and we eventually always delivered. In my opinion, the experience demonstrates my leadership qualities, at least to some point.
  • I consider myself a leader, though I have not yet had a chance to prove it , since this is my first ever job application for any managerial role. But I learned in my other jobs, as well as at school, that I can make people interested in a vision , and motivate them to cooperate together. What’s more, I find it easy to connect with almost everyone , which is, I believe, an important quality for every leader. To sum it up, I have a leadership potential, and hope to get a chance to realize it in your company.

We know many levels of leadership

What some job applicants don’t understand is that leadership does not necessary mean spearheading a big team or an entire corporation. We have many levels and forms of leadership–and I do not speak about some formal classifications here.

You can be a leader for a single colleague you have, you can be a leader even for your boss , and you can be a leader even if you do not work anywhere . As long as you help your friends and family members to grow, and to achieve their full potential in their endeavors, you are leading them–often without realizing it.

And if you do not have a chance to lead anyone , you can at least aspire to do so. Tell the interviewers that you have the personality for becoming a great leader, and hope to realize your ambition in their company…

Every employee cannot be a leader

In some cases a question about leadership can be a “ catch question “. If you apply for a job in some place where you are expected to bent your head, listen to orders , and follow the work manual step by step, without thinking, it is better saying that you do not consider yourself a leader.

I honestly hope you do not apply for such type of a job . If you do, though, saying that you consider yourself a leader would not help you to get it . Keep it on your mind, and think about the job, and career growth opportunities. If it is manual work with no career growth opportunities, it is better to conceal your leadership skills (or ambitions)…

On International Women’s Day, we celebrate women and girls around the world, and we applaud all they have achieved in the fight for equality.

Women and girls have made great gains – demolishing barriers, dismantling stereotypes and driving progress towards a more just and equal world.

Yet they face immense obstacles.  Billions of women and girls face marginalization, injustice and discrimination, while the persistent epidemic of violence against women disgraces humanity. 

Our world still reflects millennia of male-dominated power relations.

And progress is under attack, with a fierce backlash against women’s rights.

At our current rate, legal equality is some three hundred years away. 

We must move much faster.

On International Women’s Day, we stand with women and girls fighting for their rights, and we commit to accelerating progress. 

This year’s theme – invest in women – reminds us that ending the patriarchy requires money on the table.

We must support women’s organisations on the front line.

And we must invest in programmes to end violence against women, and to drive women’s inclusion and leadership in economies, digital technologies, peacebuilding and climate action.

This all depends on unlocking finance for sustainable development so that countries have funds available to invest in women and girls.  

We also need to increase the number of women leaders in business, finance, central banks and finance ministries. This can help drive investments in policies and programmes that respond to women and girls’ needs.

Women’s rights are a proven path to fair, peaceful, prosperous societies. It is good for us all.

Together, let’s take urgent action to make it a reality.

'All by Myself' singer Eric Carmen dies at 74

The news was confirmed in a post on his website.

Eric Carmen, the singer/songwriter known for hits like "Hungry Eyes" and "All By Myself," has died, his wife Amy announced on his official website. Carmen was 74.

"It is with tremendous sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Eric Carmen," she wrote . "Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend. It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy. Please respect the family’s privacy as we mourn our enormous loss."

Amy Carmen then quoted her husband’s song "Love Is All That Matters," ending the post with, "Love Is All That Matters...Faithful and Forever."

Ohio native Carmen first had success as the lead singer of the power-pop band Raspberries, scoring hits like "Go All the Way," "Let's Pretend," "I Wanna Be With You" and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)."

He began a solo career in late 1975, and his first two solo singles were big hits in 1976: "All By Myself" and "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again."

During that time, Carmen's songs began to be recorded by other artists, including Shaun Cassidy, who reached the top 10 with Carmen's compositions "Hey Deanie" and "That's Rock and Roll." Carmen continued to chart singles as an artist himself but took a break from the music industry in 1980.

After co-writing the 1984 “Footloose” soundtrack smash "Almost Paradise" -- recorded by Mike Reno and Ann Wilson -- Carmen reemerged in 1985 with a comeback hit, "I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips." But it was the 1987 movie “Dirty Dancing” that really brought him back to the fore: His contribution to the soundtrack – "Hungry Eyes" – was a top 10 hit, and he reached the top five with 1988's "Make Me Lose Control."

In 2000, Carmen toured as part of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. In 2013, he released his first new song in 15 years, "Brand New Year," part of a 2014 best-of compilation.

The Philippine economy in 2024: Stronger for longer?

The Philippines ended 2023 on a high note, being the fastest growing economy across Southeast Asia with a growth rate of 5.6 percent—just shy of the government's target of 6.0 to 7.0 percent. 1 “National accounts,” Philippine Statistics Authority, January 31, 2024; "Philippine economic updates,” Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, November 16, 2023. Should projections hold, the Philippines is expected to, once again, show significant growth in 2024, demonstrating its resilience despite various global economic pressures (Exhibit 1). 2 “Economic forecast 2024,” International Monetary Fund, November 1, 2023; McKinsey analysis.

The growth in the Philippine economy in 2023 was driven by a resumption in commercial activities, public infrastructure spending, and growth in digital financial services. Most sectors grew, with transportation and storage (13 percent), construction (9 percent), and financial services (9 percent), performing the best (Exhibit 2). 3 “National accounts,” Philippine Statistics Authority, January 31, 2024. While the country's trade deficit narrowed in 2023, it remains elevated at $52 billion due to slowing global demand and geopolitical uncertainties. 4 “Highlights of the Philippine export and import statistics,” Philippine Statistics Authority, January 28, 2024. Looking ahead to 2024, the current economic forecast for the Philippines projects a GDP growth of between 5 and 6 percent.

Inflation rates are expected to temper between 3.2 and 3.6 percent in 2024 after ending 2023 at 6.0 percent, above the 2.0 to 4.0 percent target range set by the government. 5 “Nomura downgrades Philippine 2024 growth forecast,” Nomura, September 11, 2023; “IMF raises Philippine growth rate forecast,” International Monetary Fund, July 16, 2023.

For the purposes of this article, most of the statistics used for our analysis have come from a common thread of sources. These include the Central Bank of the Philippines (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas); the Department of Energy Philippines; the IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP); and the Philippines Statistics Authority.

The state of the Philippine economy across seven major sectors and themes

In the article, we explore the 2024 outlook for seven key sectors and themes, what may affect each of them in the coming year, and what could potentially unlock continued growth.

Financial services

The recovery of the financial services sector appears on track as year-on-year growth rates stabilize. 6 Philippines Statistics Authority, November 2023; McKinsey in partnership with Oxford Economics, November 2023. In 2024, this sector will likely continue to grow, though at a slower pace of about 5 percent.

Financial inclusion and digitalization are contributing to growth in this sector in 2024, even if new challenges emerge. Various factors are expected to impact this sector:

  • Inclusive finance: Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas continues to invest in financial inclusion initiatives. For example, basic deposit accounts (BDAs) reached $22 million in 2023 and banking penetration improved, with the proportion of adults with formal bank accounts increasing from 29 percent in 2019 to 56 percent in 2021. 7 “Financial inclusion dashboard: First quarter 2023,” Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, February 6, 2024.
  • Digital adoption: Digital channels are expected to continue to grow, with data showing that 60 percent of adults who have a mobile phone and internet access have done a digital financial transaction. 8 “Financial inclusion dashboard: First quarter 2023,” Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, February 6, 2024. Businesses in this sector, however, will need to remain vigilant in navigating cybersecurity and fraud risks.
  • Unsecured lending growth: Growth in unsecured lending is expected to continue, but at a slower pace than the past two to three years. For example, unsecured retail lending for the banking system alone grew by 27 percent annually from 2020 to 2022. 9 “Loan accounts: As of first quarter 2023,” Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, February 6, 2024; "Global banking pools,” McKinsey, November 2023. Businesses in this field are, however, expected to recalibrate their risk profiling models as segments with high nonperforming loans emerge.
  • High interest rates: Key interest rates are expected to decline in the second half of 2024, creating more accommodating borrowing conditions that could boost wholesale and corporate loans.

Supportive frameworks have a pivotal role to play in unlocking growth in this sector to meet the ever-increasing demand from the financially underserved. For example, financial literacy programs and easier-to-access accounts—such as BDAs—are some measures that can help widen market access to financial services. Continued efforts are being made to build an open finance framework that could serve the needs of the unbanked population, as well as a unified credit scoring mechanism to increase the ability of historically under-financed segments, such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to access formal credit. 10 “BSP launches credit scoring model,” Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, April 26, 2023.

Energy and Power

The outlook for the energy sector seems positive, with the potential to grow by 7 percent in 2024 as the country focuses on renewable energy generation. 11 McKinsey analysis based on input from industry experts. Currently, stakeholders are focused on increasing energy security, particularly on importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet power plants’ requirements as production in one of the country’s main sources of natural gas, the Malampaya gas field, declines. 12 Myrna M. High global inflation and the fact that the Philippines is a net fuel importer are impacting electricity prices and the build-out of planned renewable energy projects. Recent regulatory moves to remove foreign ownership limits on exploration, development, and utilization of renewable energy resources could possibly accelerate growth in the country’s energy and power sector. 13 “RA 11659,” Department of Energy Philippines, June 8, 2023.

Gas, renewables, and transmission are potential growth drivers for the sector. Upgrading power grids so that they become more flexible and better able to cope with the intermittent electricity supply that comes with renewables will be critical as the sector pivots toward renewable energy. A recent coal moratorium may position natural gas as a transition fuel—this could stimulate exploration and production investments for new, indigenous natural gas fields, gas pipeline infrastructure, and LNG import terminal projects. 14 Philippine energy plan 2020–2040, Department of Energy Philippines, June 10, 2022; Power development plan 2020–2040 , Department of Energy Philippines, 2021. The increasing momentum of green energy auctions could facilitate the development of renewables at scale, as the country targets 35 percent share of renewables by 2030. 15 Power development plan 2020–2040 , 2022.

Growth in the healthcare industry may slow to 2.8 percent in 2024, while pharmaceuticals manufacturing is expected to rebound with 5.2 percent growth in 2024. 16 McKinsey analysis in partnership with Oxford Economics.

Healthcare demand could grow, although the quality of care may be strained as the health worker shortage is projected to increase over the next five years. 17 McKinsey analysis. The supply-and-demand gap in nursing alone is forecast to reach a shortage of approximately 90,000 nurses by 2028. 18 McKinsey analysis. Another compounding factor straining healthcare is the higher than anticipated benefit utilization and rising healthcare costs, which, while helping to meet people's healthcare budgets, may continue to drive down profitability for health insurers.

Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies are feeling varying effects of people becoming increasingly health conscious. Consumers are using more over the counter (OTC) medication and placing more beneficial value on organic health products, such as vitamins and supplements made from natural ingredients, which could impact demand for prescription drugs. 19 “Consumer health in the Philippines 2023,” Euromonitor, October 2023.

Businesses operating in this field may end up benefiting from universal healthcare policies. If initiatives are implemented that integrate healthcare systems, rationalize copayments, attract and retain talent, and incentivize investments, they could potentially help to strengthen healthcare provision and quality.

Businesses may also need to navigate an increasingly complex landscape of diverse health needs, digitization, and price controls. Digital and data transformations are being seen to facilitate improvements in healthcare delivery and access, with leading digital health apps getting more than one million downloads. 20 Google Play Store, September 27, 2023. Digitization may create an opportunity to develop healthcare ecosystems that unify touchpoints along the patient journey and provide offline-to-online care, as well as potentially realizing cost efficiencies.

Consumer and retail

Growth in the retail and wholesale trade and consumer goods sectors is projected to remain stable in 2024, at 4 percent and 5 percent, respectively.

Inflation, however, continues to put consumers under pressure. While inflation rates may fall—predicted to reach 4 percent in 2024—commodity prices may still remain elevated in the near term, a top concern for Filipinos. 21 “IMF raises Philippine growth forecast,” July 26, 2023; “Nomura downgrades Philippines 2024 growth forecast,” September 11, 2023. In response to challenging economic conditions, 92 percent of consumers have changed their shopping behaviors, and approximately 50 percent indicate that they are switching brands or retail providers in seek of promotions and better prices. 22 “Philippines consumer pulse survey, 2023,” McKinsey, November 2023.

Online shopping has become entrenched in Filipino consumers, as they find that they get access to a wider range of products, can compare prices more easily, and can shop with more convenience. For example, a McKinsey Philippines consumer sentiment survey in 2023 found that 80 percent of respondents, on average, use online and omnichannel to purchase footwear, toys, baby supplies, apparel, and accessories. To capture the opportunity that this shift in Filipino consumer preferences brings and to unlock growth in this sector, retail organizations could turn to omnichannel strategies to seamlessly integrate online and offline channels. Businesses may need to explore investments that increase resilience across the supply chain, alongside researching and developing new products that serve emerging consumer preferences, such as that for natural ingredients and sustainable sources.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is a key contributor to the Philippine economy, contributing approximately 19 percent of GDP in 2022, employing about 7 percent of the country’s labor force, and growing in line with GDP at approximately 6 percent between 2023 and 2024. 23 McKinsey analysis based on input from industry experts.

Some changes could be seen in 2024 that might affect the sector moving forward. The focus toward building resilient supply chains and increasing self-sufficiency is growing. The Philippines also is likely to benefit from increasing regional trade, as well as the emerging trend of nearshoring or onshoring as countries seek to make their supply chains more resilient. With semiconductors driving approximately 45 percent of Philippine exports, the transfer of knowledge and technology, as well as the development of STEM capabilities, could help attract investments into the sector and increase the relevance of the country as a manufacturing hub. 24 McKinsey analysis based on input from industry experts.

To secure growth, public and private sector support could bolster investments in R&D and upskill the labor force. In addition, strategies to attract investment may be integral to the further development of supply chain infrastructure and manufacturing bases. Government programs to enable digital transformation and R&D, along with a strategic approach to upskilling the labor force, could help boost industry innovation in line with Industry 4.0 demand. 25 Industry 4.0 is also referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Priority products to which manufacturing industries could pivot include more complex, higher value chain electronic components in the semiconductor segment; generic OTC drugs and nature-based pharmaceuticals in the pharmaceutical sector; and, for green industries, products such as EVs, batteries, solar panels, and biomass production.

Information technology business process outsourcing

The information technology business process outsourcing (IT-BPO) sector is on track to reach its long-term targets, with $38 billion in forecast revenues in 2024. 26 Khriscielle Yalao, “WHF flexibility key to achieving growth targets—IBPAP,” Manila Bulletin , January 23, 2024. Emerging innovations in service delivery and work models are being observed, which could drive further growth in the sector.

The industry continues to outperform headcount and revenue targets, shaping its position as a country leader for employment and services. 27 McKinsey analysis based in input from industry experts. Demand from global companies for offshoring is expected to increase, due to cost containment strategies and preference for Philippine IT-BPO providers. New work setups continue to emerge, ranging from remote-first to office-first, which could translate to potential net benefits. These include a 10 to 30 percent increase in employee retention; a three- to four-hour reduction in commute times; an increase in enabled talent of 350,000; and a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 1.4 to 1.5 million tons of CO 2 per year. 28 McKinsey analysis based in input from industry experts. It is becoming increasingly more important that the IT-BPO sector adapts to new technologies as businesses begin to harness automation and generative AI (gen AI) to unlock productivity.

Talent and technology are clear areas where growth in this sector can be unlocked. The growing complexity of offshoring requirements necessitates building a proper talent hub to help bridge employee gaps and better match local talent to employers’ needs. Businesses in the industry could explore developing facilities and digital infrastructure to enable industry expansion outside the metros, especially in future “digital cities” nationwide. Introducing new service areas could capture latent demand from existing clients with evolving needs as well as unserved clients. BPO centers could explore the potential of offering higher-value services by cultivating technology-focused capabilities, such as using gen AI to unlock revenue, deliver sales excellence, and reduce general administrative costs.

Sustainability

The Philippines is considered to be the fourth most vulnerable country to climate change in the world as, due to its geographic location, the country has a higher risk of exposure to natural disasters, such as rising sea levels. 29 “The Philippines has been ranked the fourth most vulnerable country to climate change,” Global Climate Risk Index, January 2021. Approximately $3.2 billion, on average, in economic loss could occur annually because of natural disasters over the next five decades, translating to up to 7 to 8 percent of the country’s nominal GDP. 30 “The Philippines has been ranked the fourth most vulnerable country to climate change,” Global Climate Risk Index, January 2021.

The Philippines could capitalize on five green growth opportunities to operate in global value chains and catalyze growth for the nation:

  • Renewable energy: The country could aim to generate 50 percent of its energy from renewables by 2040, building on its high renewable energy potential and the declining cost of producing renewable energy.
  • Solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing: More than a twofold increase in annual output from 2023 to 2030 could be achieved, enabled by lower production costs.
  • Battery production: The Philippines could aim for a $1.5 billion domestic market by 2030, capitalizing on its vast nickel reserves (the second largest globally). 31 “MineSpans,” McKinsey, November 2023.
  • Electric mobility: Electric vehicles could account for 15 percent of the country’s vehicle sales by 2030 (from less than 1 percent currently), driven by incentives, local distribution, and charging infrastructure. 32 McKinsey analysis based on input from industry experts.
  • Nature-based solutions: The country’s largely untapped total abatement potential could reach up to 200 to 300 metric tons of CO 2 , enabled by its biodiversity and strong demand.

The Philippine economy: Three scenarios for growth

Having grown faster than other economies in Southeast Asia in 2023 to end the year with 5.6 percent growth, the Philippines can expect a similarly healthy growth outlook for 2024. Based on our analysis, there are three potential scenarios for the country’s growth. 33 McKinsey analysis in partnership with Oxford Economics.

Slower growth: The first scenario projects GDP growth of 4.8 percent if there are challenging conditions—such as declining trade and accelerated inflation—which could keep key policy rates high at about 6.5 percent and dampen private consumption, leading to slower long-term growth.

Soft landing: The second scenario projects GDP growth of 5.2 percent if inflation moderates and global conditions turn out to be largely favorable due to a stable investment environment and regional trade demand.

Accelerated growth: In the third scenario, GDP growth is projected to reach 6.1 percent if inflation slows and public policies accommodate aspects such as loosening key policy rates and offering incentive programs to boost productivity.

Focusing on factors that could unlock growth in its seven critical sectors and themes, while adapting to the macro-economic scenario that plays out, would allow the Philippines to materialize its growth potential in 2024 and take steps towards achieving longer-term, sustainable economic growth.
