About the programme
The Institute offers two postgraduate programmes by research MSc and PhD .
The postgraduate by research programmes provide comprehensive training in research in various areas of mathematical sciences of current interest to members of the Institute. These include but are not limited to areas such as algebra, analysis, combinatorics, graph theory, computer-aided geometric design, differential geometry, atomic collision processes, mathematical modelling, multivariate methods, non-linear regression, numerical analysis, operations research, quantum collision and tunelling processes, statistical distributions and modelling, stochastic processes and investment. A list of the staff members in with a brief description of their research interests are given below. Other than the conventional PhD, the University of Malaya also permits the presentation of thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the format of published papers and by prior publication. Award of Degree
The award of the degree is based on the dissertation submitted by the candidate. There are no written exams. (At the discretion of the supervisor, a candidate may be required to audit courses offered by the Institute.)

General Programme Information
The Faculty offers a PhD programme by research in languages and linguistics.
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) is University of Malaya’s premier research training degree. The pinnacle of academic achievement at University of Malaya, the Ph.D is awarded based on the foundation of the thesis prepared under supervision, resulting in an original and significant contribution, displaying extensive knowledge and comprehension of the subject and field of study.
Evaluated by independent experts using current and internationally accepted standards, the University’s Ph.D programme produces human capital, which is not only intellectual and skilful in modern technology but also very versatile and able to handle problems in real life situations. Ph.D. students will carry out focused research in their area of specialisation, which is of immediate relevance to local interest. Additionally, they will be alert to the challenges faced in the international arena through the media, seminars, conferences and keynote addresses, and also through research attachments and collaborative exchange arrangements with internationally recognised research centres.

The Ph.D programme is more than just an academic distinction. The programme is designed to ensure the fields of study remain relevant to the needs of today. At the same time, the candidates in pursuit of their Ph.D degrees foresee the changes of societal and industry standards, trends and behavioural patterns; the very same qualities that make them brilliant and effective leaders.
Language Requirement
A non-Malaysian applicant who wishes to follow a programme and/or write their dissertation in the English Language but whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English Language must possess:
- A minimum score of 550 for a paper-based total, a score of 213 for a computer-based total, or a score of 80 for an internet-based total for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
- At least a band 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)(ACADEMIC); or
- A score of 50 and above for the Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE)
A non-Malaysian applicant pursuing a programme of study and/or writing a dissertation in a language other than English Language, that is, Bahasa Malaysia and Arabic, which is related to his/her field of research prior to graduation is required to obtain:
- A minimum score of 400 for a paper-based total for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
- At least a band of 4.0 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)(ACADEMIC)

- In the media, advertising and publishing industry (e.g. script-writers, journalists, writers, editors, copywriters, proof-readers);
- In corporate communication;
- In the education industry (e.g. corporate trainers, language teachers/instructors, teacher educators, programme/curriculum developers, education managers/administrators at government and private schools and institutions, researchers and lecturers in higher education);
- As translators and interpreters;
- As language or linguistic consultants (e.g. linguistic and language-related fieldwork, researchers, analysing linguistic aspects of spoken and written texts).

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by AHSGS
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme must possess:
- A master’s degree from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate; OR
- Any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; AND
- Fulfil the English language requirement as set by the University Senate.
ADDITIONAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
Candidates for PhD programme under School of Computing (SOC) must possess a Master’s Degree or equivalent AND must have completed at least ONE (1) of their earlier Degrees (Master’s or Bachelor’s) in Computing or related to computing.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is offered by full research. Students should have adequate research knowledge and skills as stipulated by the Academic Committee. Students who do not possess these criteria are required to register and pass the following two (2) pre-requisite courses with at least a B grade before they continue with their research:
- SZRZ6014 Research Methodology
- SCLE6014 Academic Writing; and/or
- Any other courses as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee
Students are also required to:
- present their research work at colloquiums/symposiums arranged by the Awang Had Salleh Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (AHSGS) /respective Schools;
- present and successfully defend their research proposals.
To complete the Ph.D. programme, students are required to:
- present and defend the proposed research/thesis to a committee;
- present progress reports of research work at colloquiums arranged by the Graduate School or College;
- Option A: at least one (1) article is accepted for publication in ISI Journal or Scopus; and at least one (1) article is under review for publication in a refereed journal.
- Option B: Two (2) articles are published in a refereed journal.
- attend a viva session to defend the thesis; and
- submit a final thesis.

Course structure.
This Ph.D programme is purely based on individual supervised research. At the end of the candidate's study, a thesis must be submitted and upon successful defense of the paper, the candidate will be granted Ph.D status. All research proposals must be approved and supervised by the Faculty.
Ph.D candidates’ theses must not exceed 100,000 words. They are required to complete their studies within 12 semesters.
Language Requirement
A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English language and where the applicant wishes to follow a programme and/or write his tesis in the English language shall be required:
- To obtain a score of 600 for a paper-based total (PBT); a score of 250 for a computer-based total (CBT) or a score of 100 for an internet-based total (IBT) for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
- To obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

- Master’s Degree by Coursework or Mixed Mode with a CGPA of not less than 3.7;
- Master’s Degree by Coursework or Mixed Mode with a CGPA of 2.00 to AND qualification of a Bachelor's degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00;
- Master’s Degree by Coursework or Mixed Mode with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 to 3.69 and APEL (A) qualification or other qualification approved by the Senate; or
- has relevant work experience;
- has produced publications in the relevant fields;
- is a scholarship recipient;
- is a graduate of the University of Malaya;
- is a government agency staff;
- Passed the interview conducted by the Faculty; or
- Passed the Faculty’s special assessment.
- possesses related working experience not less than five (5) years;
- published at least one (1) publication in a refereed journal in the related field;
- Passed the interview conducted by the Faculty; or (iv) Passed the Faculty’s special assessment.

Hiring Graduate Students
We offered two entry pathway for this PhD programme, which is normal mode and prior to publication mode. Our PhD by Prior Publication mode provides a unique pathway for you to achieve a Doctoral award based on your existing body of work. We recognise the value of your prior publications and include them as a significant part of your submission for the Doctoral award.
Normal Mode
Pre-requisites: .
- Masters in the Engineering/Engineering Technology or its equivalent; OR
- Passed Bachelor's degree Engineering/Engineering Technology or its equivalent with min. CGPA 3.67 and registered as a Masters candidate and passed related qualifying assessment; OR
- Any other equivalent qualification recognized by Malaysian government OR accepted by the Taylor's University Senate and Any of the above condition would require student's research proposal to be approved.
International Students
IELTS 5.0 / TOEFL 40 (Internet Based Test) (May join IEN preparatory course and achieve the IELTS score) The validity of the IELTS or equivalent is within 2 years from the date of the examination.
Accerelated PhD Programme
Bachelor's degree candidates who are registered for master's degree programmes may apply to convert to the doctoral degree programmes subjected to the following conditions:
- Within 1 year for full time and within 2 years for part-time candidates;
- Having shown competency and capability in conducting research at doctoral level through rigorous internal evaluation.
- Approval of the Taylor's University Senate.
If Your Bachelor Degree Are From Different Fields
- Students without a qualification in the related fields or relevant working experience requires to undergo and pass a bridging module.
- Any of the above conditions would require student's research proposal to be approved.

Prior Publication Mode
You will need to fulfill one of the below.
- Obtain a master's degree in the field or related fields accepted by the HEP Senate
- Obtain other qualifications equivalent to a master's degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia
Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the HEP
In addition to the above criteria, those who want to join Doctoral Degree by Retrospective or Prior Publication mode must include the below to the formal application:
- Minimum of 5 publications in alignment with the theme of the specialisation;
- An executive summary of the above publications establishing
- The theme that connects the published works to be submitted (up to 1,000 words);
- Contribution to knowledge in the field of the proposed area of study (up to 1,000 words)
- A list of scholarly published work;
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
For international candidates, evidence of English Language Proficiency as determined by the intake standards approved by the Senate
A Selection Committee must be established to review the formal application for PhD by Retrospective or Prior Publication and recommend to the Senate to obtain approval.
Criteria for published works
- Published work must encompass high-quality journals, monographs, books, research-based chapters in books, electronic publications which have not been used to obtain other awards or deemed a part of those awards.
- The publications must be published within a period not exceeding ten (10) years from the date of submission.
- For the five (5) nominated publications, the candidate must be the principal author with the contributions of others clearly defined.

How long is the candidature?
The minimum duration of candidature is 6 months and must not exceed 2 years.
What are the criteria for the award of the degree?
The minimum requirement for the award of the degree is to:
- Pass thesis examination and viva-voce/ oral examination.
- Confirmation of meeting minimum candidature period (from the first day of intake commencement to confirmation of satisfactory amendment of thesis/dissertation by examiners).
How will progression tracking be done?
Progression tracking is done by monitoring of research progress periodically through:
- Regular consultation with the supervisors (supervisor-supervisee log);
- Progress report; and Seminars (research seminar, thesis completion seminar).
